Clay matters
TWU exhibit a playful, skillful dance with ceramic sensibilities
ON THE COVER Steppin’ out with Tony
C
olby Parsons O’Keefe started planning for the latest exhibition at Texas Woman’s University, “Point of Departure,” with a question. “If someone’s trained in clay and they use a different medium, do they use that medium differently because they were trained in clay?” O’Keefe wondered. O’Keefe is a TWU art professor, and a ceramist by training. He worked with artist Shannon Goff — who lent some of her cardboard works to the exhibit — to put together an exhibit of work by women who have training in ceramics, but have followed artistic tangents. “I’ve just seen in all fields of art [that] people are diversifying a lot, and there aren’t boundaries between the media much any more,” O’Keefe said. “And this is something that is happening in my own work. Sometimes, when you’re out in the field looking around at what artists are doing, you start thinking of a lot of questions.” Exhibits don’t need to answer those questions, O’Keefe said, but “Point of Departure” opens the door to think and talk about how media inform artists and their art. Los Angeles artist Julie Schustack, who has two pieces in the exhibit, said all of her work is functional, and ceramics generally make up 20 percent to 30 percent of her material. “I think my approach to using clay is that it’s there for a reason. There are two pieces I’ve finished recently. One of them was a sink, and just to be obnoxious and poke fun at it, I tiled the sink and tiled two-byfours with these ceramic tiles. The piece is a gravity sink that rolls, that you could move anywhere and use it, but I just had to put these pink ceramic tiles on it.” Schustack also created a piece called Hearing Aid, an object that looks like it started out being a set of high-end headphones, but turned into a

head-mounted set of cones that work like the 19th century ear trumpet. Schustack said she was making a lot of cones, influenced by Thomas Edison’s clay cones used most often for record players. She picked one up and put it to her ear and said she was surprised that she could hear so many sounds. “I really like when my work gets more absurd,” Schustack said. “This piece was an absurd, problem-solving thing. It’s just obnoxious to think about all these people walking around with these on their heads. Also, both my parents have these disabilities — there probably is a connection to that.”

Artist Debbie Reichard incorporated clay into her version of a milk crate — also known as the poor college student’s bookcase. Little D art to make big splash in Dallas
L
uminArte is part of the Dallas Arts District, but come this weekend, the Levee Street gallery will be all about Denton. “Denton Rising Artists” opens at 7 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, and when it does, art director and Denton resident Christian Millet said, Dallas art buffs will see some up-andcoming artists who deserve their attention. “The whole intention with this artist show is that we’re trying to promote Denton artists to Dallas,” said Millet, an artist himself who has paintings on display at Jupiter House on the downtown Square. “The gallery is showing art pretty much from everywhere. But there are a lot of artists in Denton, because of the universities, who are doing good work and getting recognized on an international level. But there aren’t that many really good venues for them to show their work.” Millet said LuminArte has exhibited work by Denton artist and UNT graduate Matt Anzak, who has gallery representation in the United States, Paris and Rome. Denton artist John Finn’s strong, graphic painting will be part of the upcoming exhibition at LuminArte in Dallas. Anzak is in good company in Denton, and LuminArte wants to make room for his awardwinning peers. The gallery reached out to specific Denton artists to be in the exhibition. Millet said he worked to make the exhibit broad in terms of style. “We didn’t want to create competition between the artists,” he said. “We wanted the exhibit to be done so that when you look at two pieces, one next to the other, they don’t look the same.” Participating artists are Margaret Anna Eliot, Savannah Niles, Hilari Oller, John Finn, Carl Bajandas, Rachelle Blosser,
Elizabeth Hurtado, Augustine Cordero, Jon Orbock, Rita Childress, Adam Burkett and Andrew Jonathan. Michael Bales, the 2008 Huntington Art Prize finalist, has work in the exhibit, and UNT art professor Jennifer Leigh Jones, who was named among the new “Dallas Nine” artists in D magazine, has work in the show. The exhibition opens with a reception at 7 p.m. Saturday and runs through Nov. 26. The gallery is located at 1727 Levee St. in Dallas. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Denton’s Fab Deuce will celebrate five years of making music on Saturday at Hailey’s Club.
Flava in the thump-thump Fab Deuce gives hip-hop a much-needed intellectual side
D
enton Time put this question to a pair of local hip-hop artists: So, what’s the difference between rap and hip-hop? Short answer: Rap manufactures hyper-masculine postures in outrageously egotistical rhymes set to beats another (probably better) musician pioneered. Hip-hop throws beats and hooks just as fast and furiously as rap does, but at its heart, hip-hop is driven by an idea. A story. A poem. Denton’s Fab Deuce, which plays a fifth anniversary show Saturday night at Hailey’s, can bring as much heat as it needs to back up its claim to belong in the hip-hop camp. Fab Deuce is made up of brothers Pudge and Blaine Brewer and A. Arnold (known on stage as Pudgy B, Blaine and Simple, and L.O.N.E.). The trio was born out of the halls of Denton High School five years ago. The three-piece released

Deuce Knuckle, a slick, 14-track record (not counting the intro that leads into the album) that starts out with a mellow, feelgood vibe, builds up to “Monster and ends with a thoroughly chilled-out, funky note on “Music. (Think Will Smith’s “Summertime with lyrics that maxed the vocabulary section of the SATs.) Fab Deuce is a product of the scene that spun Vortexas and Infidelix, a scene Pudge Brewer said is open, friendly and prone to collaborating, in making music and promoting Denton hip-hop. “I feel like Fab Deuce has the party sound down really well, Brewer said. “Our party sound is probably what brings people to our shows. And we’re talking about all different kinds of people. “When we do a show, we
want people to be able to forget about everything and have a good time. Even if Fab Deuce didn’t boast a Denton identity, the lyrics betray the city’s multiethnic, multicultural quirks. The trio’s lyrics mention sharing a smoke with hippies, Ph.D.s, and knowing someone on every block. If you’re used to the chest-thumping, softcore stuff of Top 40 hip-hop, Fab Deuce will seem nearly erudite. Where does Fab Duece blur the line between rap and hiphop? The trio vends infectious beats and samples spliced together with smart musical composition. Fab Deuce celebrates its fifth anniversary with Adverse and Playdough with DJ Sean. Doors open at 9 p.m. Music starts at 10 p.m. Cover is $6 for ages 21 and older and $8 for those younger than 21. — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY Conviction (###) Hilary Swank offers a strong portrayal in this truelife drama about Betty Anne Waters, a high school dropout who puts herself through college and law school for the sole purpose of exonerating her brother (Sam Rockwell), who she feels was wrongly accused of a murder for which he is serving a life sentence. While it lacks much insight into the legal system that plays such an integral role, the film compensates with having the same grit and determination as its heroine. Rated R, 107 minutes. At the Magnolia. — Todd Jorgenson Howl (####) Documentary filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman use their narrative skills to mix the dramatics of the publication of and resulting obscenity trial of Allen Ginsberg for his poem Howl, while Ginsberg (James Franco) recites the poem and frolics in flashbacks with his Beat poet friends. At the trial, San Francisco District Attorney Ralph McIntosh (David Strathairn) prosecuted the case and Jake Ehrlich (Jon Hamm) defended. Beautifully rendered evocation of time, place and mindset. Not rated, 90 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Paranormal Activity 2 In the sequel to last year’s Paranormal Activity, a family sets up security cameras around their home to find out more about a rash of break-ins, only to realize that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem. Rated R, 91 minutes. Soul Kitchen (###) This modestly amusing German comedy is a delightful change of pace for Turkish filmmaker Fatih Akin (The Edge of Heaven). It follows the struggles of a Greek chef (Adam Bousdoukos) to keep his Hamburg restaurant afloat, from his hiring of an eccentric new chef to a former classmate trying to trick him into selling the property. There’s nothing especially deep or profound here, but Akin shows his versatility with a breezy and appealing character-driven comedy. Not rated, 99 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J.

a person approaches death and conjures up images of what Rabelais called the “Great Perhaps.” These bright lights and vaguely human figures provide the few brief visual moments allowed by Eastwood and his frequent cinematographer Tom Stern (no slaves to compositional niceties or clarity in lighting). Elsewhere, the gloomy atmospherics drain any remaining energy from the seemingly pointless narrative. Damon sleepwalks through his role as a tortured soul, and De France barely registers. Young Frankie and George McLaren, however, possess and maintain appropriately blank expressions that fit in here — or, perhaps, in another, better film.
most social networking website, making millions and being sued by everyone he considered a friend. Fast, funny, clever and well done. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — B.A.
Skeptics and scoffers will find Hereafter the funniest film of the year. Others, however, might simply yawn at its pretentious cravings, funereal pace and murky intentions. Peter Morgan wrote Hereafter, departing from his usual dissection of exalted figures, as in his The Queen and Frost/Nixon. Clint Eastwood directs what would not seem an unlikely subject for someone who, at 80, might hear the roar of time’s winged chariot. But any acceptance of Hereafter depends greatly on an acceptance of not only the paranormal but also of most everything that comes with it: having a two-way conversation with the dead, being able to uncover personal secrets by holding someone’s hand, and, of course, a healthy afterlife in which all is forgiven and all
secrets are explained. In Morgan’s tale, three stories play out across three countries, until awkwardly brought together for an embarrassingly tidy Hollywood ending. George (Matt Damon) has the “gift” of channeling dead spirits, enabling the living to talk to their beloved departed. But it has unnerved him, driving him from a lucrative profession despite the mercenary pleadings of his brother (Jay Mohr). So, he lives in isolated obscurity in San Francisco. French journalist Marie (Cecile De France) is swept away in a tsunami while in
Asia. Seemingly drowned, she revives but soon begins to have visions that continue to haunt her after she returns to Paris. She eventually leaves her job to devote time to researching and writing a book about the gray area of near-death experiences. In London, two inseparable young twin brothers (Frankie and George McLaren) struggle to maintain their family despite a drug-addicted mother. When one brother dies accidentally and the mother enters rehab, the surviving brother embarks on a quest to be able to communicate with his dead sibling, an effort that results in bringing the film’s three protagonists finally together. Eastwood avoids religious elements, or a compelling narrative, and instead concentrates his highest dramas on brief moments, such as the perceived circumstances in which

last job.” Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — B.A. The Social Network (####) In a case of better-than-it-sounds, David Fincher directs from a script by
Aaron Sorkin about the creation of Facebook. Jesse Eisenberg stars as the Harvard undergraduate who wants to expand his social life and ends up creating the world’s fore-

ony Bennett hasn’t let a few birthdays stop him. At 84 years old, the pop and jazz singer still maintains a swinging style, making great music and touring the country, with a stop Saturday at WinStar World Casino in Oklahoma. What’s remarkable is that Bennett is as popular today as ever. His songs have become standards; his concerts sell out. His records have sold many millions — and the music is timeless, so it touches millions more. “I’m doing what I love the most,” he says. And it shows. How do you sum up the accomplishments of a man’s life? You don’t. You let him speak for himself.

DentonTime: Out of all of your many honors, tell us which means the most to you and why. Bennett: I think one of the things that touched me the most was during the Vietnam War, I had read a story about a group of soldiers who were headed home and were all together and just started to spontaneously sing, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” I still remember reading that article and feeling very honored that those soldiers thought of my song as they planned to return home. So many have influenced you, and you have, in turn, inspired so many. Who continues to inspire you and why? I am still inspired by the great masters — both in music and in art —
Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra and Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Da Vinci. Genius lasts forever, and they continue to inspire generations throughout the years. Remarkably at 84 years old, your voice is as strong as ever. Do you do anything special to take care of it? Or yourself? Well, I do like pasta since I am Italian, but I try not to overeat, and I have been playing tennis to keep in shape for many years. I also think a positive attitude about life is one of the best ways to take care of yourself and reduce stress — stress is a killer. What keeps you young? My Maltese dog, Happy — she is full of energy!

Do you prefer the spontaneity of live performance or the control that comes with studio recording? When I started recording back in the 1950s it all was live, and that is the only way I know how to perform. So even when I am in the studio, I have my quartet right in the same room with me and we keep the recording process as live as possible. I like the spontaneity of live performance and it’s one of the reasons why I tour with jazz musicians, as every night on stage it’s always a little different. How do you keep fresh the music you’ve sung for years? Well, again, I think a large part of See BENNETT on 10

Bennett that is a result of working with jazz musicians while I am on tour. We have the flexibility to change arrangements and tempos around even during the show itself so it keeps the performances “in the moment,” which is more exciting for us and the audience. Also, I still get “butterflies” going out on stage every night; [Frank] Sinatra told me once that this is a good thing because it shows that you care and you want things to turn out right. I still feel that way and I never want to disrespect the audience by not putting everything I have into a song or a performance. Tell us about Anthony Benedetto, the artist. I began drawing with chalk on the sidewalks of my hometown in Astoria, Queens, and have been drawing ever since. When I was in high school — at the School of Industrial Arts in Manhattan — I studied all the graphic arts and learned a lot about technique. Later on, Duke Ellington told me it was better to do two creative outlets, not just one, so I really put an emphasis on the painting and began to show my work in galleries. I have been painting or sketching pretty much every day since I was able to hold a pencil — it’s something I have to
MORE ABOUT TONY BENNETT This year marks Tony Bennett’s 60th anniversary as a recording artist. In 1949, Bob Hope discovered Bennett in Greenwich Village. It was Hope who convinced the young singer to change his stage name from Antonio Benedetto to Tony Bennett. He has recorded more than 105 albums. His triple-platinum album Duets features Sting, Paul McCartney, Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, Bono, Elton John, Michael Buble, Elvis Costello and the Dixie Chicks. He has won 15 Grammy Awards and his television special, Tony Bennett: An American Classic, won eight Emmy Awards. He has performed for 10 U.S. presidents. In 1965, he presented the Beatles with the group’s first-ever award at the NME Poll Winners Concert. He has sold more than 50 million records. He participated in Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights march to Selma, Ala., and was later honored with the Martin Luther King Center’s Salute to Greatness Award. He received the United Nations Humanitarian Award in 2007. He was the first celebrity cameo on the animated TV show The Simpsons. He is a prolific artist, whose works are for sale through Benedetto Arts studio in New York City. Three of his paintings are in Smithsonian Institution collections, including portraits of Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. He has twice been commissioned by the United Nations, including for its 50th anniversary. He conceived and spearheaded the establishment of the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts, a public school in Astoria, N.Y. He is an avid tennis fan and played in March in front of thousands at the Hit for Haiti Tennis Special, which featured Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. do, not just like to do. You’ve said many times you have no intention of retiring. So what’s next for Tony Bennett? I get asked all the time if I will retire and I usually say, “Retire to what? I am doing what I love the most and it feels like I never had to work a
day in my life.” I have so many ideas for new projects — I just hope I have the time to get them all done. And we have some big plans for my 85th birthday next year, but I can’t tell you yet what they are! ELLEN RITSCHER SACKETT can be reached at 940-566-6845.
