Think in terms of ‘territorial space’ to create the ultimate master bathroom

Bathrooms for couples typically conjure up images of matching bathrobes and swimming pool-sized tubs overflowing with bubbles and bubbly. For today’s busy couple, though, the bathroom has become a more complex space with two equally important, but opposite, goals – functionality and relaxation. To make a bathroom as functional as possible, Dave Alderman, a certified master kitchen and bath designer and president-elect of the National Kitchen & Bath Association, has two key pieces of advice. First, he recommends as much countertop space as possible, as well as two sinks. “If you have the space, it’s better to have two distinct areas,� he says, in order to help maintain “territorial space.� Moreover, Alderman has found that accommodating each person’s height – usually by raising the countertop by two to three inches for males – can be useful for making bathroom rituals feel a little bit more natural. Second, Alderman suggests that couples have a lot of storage space. As much as a couple may want the bathroom to be a shared space, there’s a certain amount of distance that the toothbrush and the razor should have between each other. Simple bins and storage racks can be sufficient for keeping the room in order, but furniture with drawers and especially doors creates more space to stay organized and creates a more complete look. Kate Flaherty, vice president of building products and special projects at the Chicago-based home renovation showroom LuxeHome, agrees that storage is key. “Build a linen closet or add storage units in the bathroom for easy access to linens and bathroom accessories,� she suggests. “This will save time when getting ready in a hurry.� Of course, not everyone can afford the space and price tag needed for a large master bathroom, but good lighting or an intimate effect like hanging candles can help “take a smaller bathroom and make it more elegant looking,� according to Alderman. However, if you do have the space, a bathroom can become more than just a place to soak. Some couples opt for turning the bathroom into a

complete living experience with the addition of big screen televisions, sound systems, refrigerators and sometimes an entire room attached with space for lounging, laundry or exercising. When planning a shower, Flaherty says that it should be large enough for two people and designed with the needs of both in mind. “A toe rest or shelf in the shower is perfect for women when they’re shaving,� she says. The National Kitchen & Bath

Association reported that traditional styles, ceramic and porcelain tile, and white fixtures were by far some of the most popular bathroom design elements in 2009. That doesn’t mean a couple needs to be restricted to one of these designs. “The bathroom should reflect the couple’s personal style and taste,â€? Flaherty says. “The master bath should fit the needs of the couple who uses it.â€? Š CTW Features

the new indestructibles Appealing, yet repelling: Dry-erasable leather, nanotechnology and stain-resistant chenille up the ante

Upholstery used to have it so easy. All it was asked to do was look spiffy, feel good to the touch and be durable. It was not expected to deflect human errors like spilled wine. That’s why plastic sofa covers and Scotchgard were invented. Lately, however, so-called “performance fabrics,” designed for more rigorous commercial or institutional settings, have moved in on the residential market. Now, much more is expected of home textiles as consumers wise up to the fact there are fabrics that can withstand accidents, abuse and a 6year-old’s birthday party. There’s even an erasable faux leather fabric called StaKleen Erasable Urethane Upholstery from which you can “dry erase” permanent marker. “It seems like the latest high-performance fabrics coming out are being marketed with residential use in mind,” says Upholstery Journal editor Kelly Frush. “People want their furniture to last a long time, so that’s why they request a high-performance fabric – to protect against kids, pets, stains and life in general.” Performance fabrics are born multi-taskers, going beyond the call of duty with a skill set that includes

repelling stains, guarding against UV rays and fading, neutralizing odors, resisting static, and keeping dust mites and bacteria at bay. They are the overachievers – perhaps even the superheroes – of the textile world. But until recently, non-performance home textiles had nothing to fear from performance fabrics because the competition was, well, stiff. “It’s very difficult to do what we do and keep the fabric soft,” says Randy Rubin, co-creator of Crypton Super Fabric, which is manufactured, not sprayed or treated, to have a built-in moisture barrier for stain resistance. “When you spill milk on a sofa, you might be able to clean the fabric but the milk is going to go down into the cushion and grow bacteria” unless performance upholstery is used, she says. The possibility of diaper leakage and pet accidents furthers the appeal of germfighting properties. However, Crypton and other manufacturers are now able to make performance fabrics that actually feel nice, and some have figured out how to engineer functional qualities like stain and bacteria resistance into plush or highly textured fabrics like chenille. “I think that’s why we’re seeing more of them pop up in the home, whereas before they tended to be less

attractive, thick and rough,” Frush says. “A lot of these fabrics are being produced in snazzy textures, such as faux animal hides. Bold colors are also becoming a trend, whereas blah, utilitarian colors used to be the norm.” Though not quite a household name, Sunbrella is a wellknown brand of fade-resistant, bleach-cleanable fabric initially used for outdoor applications such as patio furniture. Over time, the fabric became so refined that Sunbrella crossed the threshold into the great indoors, where it is used for window treatments and upholstery. Residential interior designers have long been using Sunbrella, Crypton and other performance fabrics for indoor

applications, and now consumers are increasingly aware they exist and are stylish and sophisticated enough for their living rooms. HGTV producer and host Joe Ruggiero helped usher performance fabrics into the mainstream by espousing their use in home interiors and partnering with Sunbrella to create a signature line. Depending on the end-use application, other desirable performance features are static resistance, moisture control and odor elimination. NanoTex makes sheets that wick moisture away from the body, so night sweats are more tolerable. The company also makes bedding that neutralizes odors. These and other properties are developed using nanotechnol-

ogy, which manipulates individual fibers at the molecular level. Using a spill-resistant performance fabric for table linens like placemats and napkins seems like a no-brainer, but though Nano-Tex makes such products, the price point compared with regular linens can make consumers balk. However, performance fabrics are becoming more affordable as the technology decreases in cost, while at the same time the quality and capabilities keep improving. Who knows what miracles the fabrics of the future will perform? Perhaps upholstery will have gotten so gifted it can alert us when the TV remote gets wedged between the cushions. © CTW Features

Cast aside images of murky London fogs – this season, gray is the new black; the softer, laidback and much more versatile cousin. Gray has long been a favorite of design professionals, and its use as a chameleon neutral has infiltrated the fashion world one couture line at a time. Sonu Mathew, senior interior designer at Benjamin Moore & Co., says that the movement is a cultural one. Researching color trends shows the movement toward gray has continued for some time now, and is finally reaching the forefront of the mass market, she says. “Now, we’ve reached a very unique point in history; we see influences from the 1920s in powder colors like gray, mixed with the influences of the 1950s and vibrant pops of color. It’s a great balance,” Mathew says. It’s hot and it’s cold The amount of warmth or coolness in a shade of gray can completely change its effect on a room. While warm grays are inviting and evoke a sense of comfort, cool grays can look industrial or even stark. Design expert and one half of the creative force behind interior design blog desiretoinspire.net, Ottawa, Canada-based Kim Johnson says that first-timers should err on the side of caution when choosing a gray and opt for one without any undertones. “I find gray is easier [to work with] than white but it, too, can have under-

tones of green, blue and purple,” Johnson says. She suggests using several slightly varied shades of gray in one room to add dimension. Once the perfect hue for a room is found, paint the trim and ceiling at half or quarter strength. Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams, says to be mindful of lighting when decorating with gray. “Lighting conditions will have a profound impact on gray tones, making them appear even cooler than intended, especially in northern exposures,” she says. Multiple Personalities Far from being dull and dreary, gray is a useful backdrop for showing off a homeowner’s personality in a given room. For Mathew, gray functions like mutable canvas. It dutifully serves as the backdrop for any design, heightening the intended mood. “Think about color in the context of the way you live your life. There are many creative and acceptable color combinations, but it’s more about fitting the look around the way you live, rather than the other way around.” Grays paired with warm colors like red and orange suggest high energy so the combination works particularly well in kitchens, Jordan says. “In any room, for a more tranquil feel, pair warm grays with warm beige and crisp white.
