Stephen Harris, known as ST 2 Lettaz, and David “Yung Clova” Williams are Southern rap duo G-Side. The pair stops at Hailey’s Monday.

Tech smarts paved trip to ‘Island’ for G-Side

tephen Harris wasn’t trying to be Spike Jonze when he bought a Canon 7D. Making music was enough. He taught himself to shoot and edit videos because he needed some, and no one else was doing it. Harris, known as ST 2 Lettaz and half of the rap duo G-Side, stepped up to make solid, low-budget videos for artists in the trenches of Huntsville, Ala., with himself and his partner David “Yung Clova” Williams. “It was more that we didn’t have a quality director here,” Harris said. “I downloaded Sony Vegas on my laptop; I didn’t know what I was doing.”G-Side transcends the duo’s tough corner of the South by promoting its closeknit community and harder sounds to an audience that spans wide. The pair returns to its streets of origin with Island, out Nov. 11. G-Side stops at Hailey’s Monday in support of the record for a free show with DJ Kluck

Chosterman supporting. Island will be available exclusively on Bandcamp for the first few months. Selling January’s The One … Cohesive through the online music distributor gave Harris and the Slow Motion Soundz label crew a clear picture of who latched on to G-Side’s open, collaborative energy and rich cuts on that record. Users of the site can access the demographics of listeners who stream the tracks and customers who purchase the music for download. “The sales are so all over the place — you can’t try to sell to just one demographic. Harris said. “[The findings] allowed us to make exactly what we wanted. It showed us we have true, die-hard fans. We don’t have to make the next radio

hit, or club banger. They like what we do.” The duo has sheltered melody through working with or sampling bands like Australian psych outfit Tame Impala and San Francisco’s Geographer, who Harris said he found when “crazy sounds” reached him through a fence during Austin’s South by Southwest music festival: “There was this guy [Nathan Blaz] up there with a cello, and it was killin’ me.” But Island, produced by Alabama’s Block Beattaz, forgoes hooks for a strong statement about the pair’s power to do what they want, when they want. This time, G-Side “just had fun rappin’ again,” said Harris. Harris said the title of the record speaks of G-Side’s place in the Huntsville sound, a sound the duo has opened to new sonic possibilities but still dwells happily within. “We weren’t outcasted here — we chose to be here,” Harris said. — Lyndsay Knecht

ew York alt-rockers the Felice Brothers will surely find a friendly town in Denton when the band arrives in support of Celebration Florida, released in May. The quintet shakes up its alternative rock with the sort of setup that Denton indie music buffs cotton to: strings, acoustic noise like bells, and piano. Whining vocals and brooding lyrics pair with naked, hooky guitar riffs for satisfying effect. If you like to dance at your live shows, skip the Felice Brothers. Concentration in jazz UNT grad puts on show in his old stomping grounds By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

University of North Texas graduate Bach Norwood is coming back to Denton. He could spend the evening with friends, hanging out at his favorite watering hole.

Norwood plans to do just that, but that evening will be spent singing behind his double bass, with some of his favorite local musicians. Norwood took his gear to New York, marveled at the record cold snap and promptly headed to Louisiana for a gig. His worldly possessions stayed in New York while Norwood settled in for the coming holiday season near New Orleans. “That can be the best time of the year for musicians,” Norwood said. In the meantime, his Denton gig on Wednesday was a chance to bring his musical buds back to the Dan’s Silverleaf stage for a night. Norwood earned a degree in bass performance in the UNT jazz studies program. He spent time in sweat-inducing classes that attract some of the best emerging jazz musicians in the world. He sang bass with Paris Rutherford’s Jazz Singers for two semesters. He earned a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies, with emphasis on double bass performance. Jazz is in his bones, he said, even if he does take a detour through another genre or five. Norwood did his share of

He said he looks forward to being back on the stage in Denton. “When I play Dan’s, there will be more musicians in the audience than most of the places I play — and that’s nice for me,” Norwood said. “In Denton, you can stretch out a little and know that there are people who appreciate the more demanding things you do. I do have some arrangements that are harder to play and probably couldn’t do them if I wasn’t playing with such fabulous musicians.” — Lucinda Breeding

America the Beautiful 2: The Thin Commandments (##1/2) Writerdirector Darryl Roberts takes a Morgan Spurlock-inspired approach and examines Americans’ problem with obesity, including his own. He interviews various suspects, including weight loss experts, trainers, dietitians and others. He even goes on various diets, routinely losing and gaining weight. Entertaining enough, with a timely message, but overly familiar. Not rated, 110 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Mozart’s Sister (###) In this French-language film, a compelling story, exquisite photography, and beautiful music balance out over a wooden production and bland leads. Mozart’s older sister Nannerl (Marie Feret) was a 1760s Zelig in her travels across the continent with her parents. She befriends the daughter of Louis XV and, later, at court, masquerades as a man and meets France’s dauphin, Louis Capet, the future Louis XVI. Despite some intrigue, the film never builds an engaging narrative. But it looks great. Not rated, 120 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen Tower Heist (###1/2) This is an ensemble, and a strong one at that, led by Ben Stiller, Alan Alda, Matthew Broderick, Casey Affleck and Téa Leoni. When financial guru Arthur Shaw (Alda) is charged with stealing billions from his investors — including the staff of his luxury high-rise — they come up with a plan to steal their money back. Brett Ratner’s blast of an action comedy truly brings out the best in Eddie Murphy, who’s fast-talking, flummoxed and full of false bravado as a low-level thief. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. — The Associated Press A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas The arrival of a mysterious package on Christmas Eve leads to stoner pals Harold and Kumar reuniting six years after their last misadventure to embark on an illadvised journey through New York City. With John Cho, Kal Penn, Paula Garces and Danneel Harris. Rated R, 90 minutes. — Los Angeles Times

Anyone curious as to what big-time filmmakers do in their spare time might find the answer in The Skin I Live In. They watch other movies. This new feature from Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar — an entertaining mix of science fiction, science fact and horror — shows the director borrowing from many who have come before, including himself. Georges Franju’s 1960 French horror classic Eyes Without a Face looks to have inspired much, including the film’s mask-wearing main character. Eminent plastic surgeon Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) and a strange woman (Elena Anaya) figure into filmmaker Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In, a genre-bending horror film that keeps you guessing.

The Skin I Live In Rated R, 120 minutes. Opens Friday at the Angelika Plano and Dallas.

Almodovar’s genre-bending film progresses at its own pace, dropping hints as to what the director intends, yet never tipping its hand. Almodovar bases his film on the recently developed medical breakthrough of face transplantation. But, being Almodovar, with a penchant for the Grand Guignol, he doesn’t settle for a face transplant. Instead, he covers an entire body with a second skin, bit by bit. And, for good measure, he throws in a sex change. Hardly any of this is grisly or graphic but is actually visually alluring in the hands of cinematographer José Luis Alcaine, a man who knows how to light a room and how to accentuate Almodovar’s trademark use of vibrant colors. Instead of routine horror territory, Almodovar focuses more intently on the

psychological trauma caused by a true identity crisis. Antonio Banderas works with Almodovar for the first time in many years, playing research physician Robert Ledgard. When first seen, he tends to a strange woman (Elena Anaya) wrapped in a fleshy body suit, and sometimes a mask. She lives in what looks like the basement of Ledgard’s spacious house. Almodovar regular Marisa

Paredes plays Marilia, the masked woman’s personal attendant and the faithful family retainer through whom Almodovar indulges in a favorite theme of fractured lineage. For the film’s first third or so, characters enter and exit with little explanation. Finally, Almodovar flashes back six years and tells the stories behind the fiery death of the physician’s wife and the rape

and eventual destabilization of his young daughter. Both figure into the strange creature inhabiting Ledgard’s hidden enclosure. Almodovar fleshes out his mix of personal stories so the last part of the film becomes a story of revenge and, later, an identity breakdown. It is an odd blend, from start to finish, sometimes over-the-top and sometimes maudlin, but always compelling.

f you could describe Denton Community Theatre’s staging of Macbeth, it would be this: Everything ends in blood. Director Julie Brinker, who works part time as the community theater’s community outreach director, isn’t shy about the blood in Macbeth. “We have a lot of stage blood,” MACBETH Brinker said. Basically, it was traditional with lots of exciting points,” Brinker said. “I really wanted to direct this show.” The company’s production board green-lighted her concept, and Brinker was off. Previously, Brinker had directed only scenes from the show. She said she knew auditions would dictate some of her decisions, but she was sure about some core ideas. She knew the show would be set between 1040 and 1050 in the moorland of Scotland. Macbeth and his brethren live among the rocky woods in the center of the country. ruins and the mouth of a cave. “I wanted a basic unit set because I wanted people to be able to use their imagination,” she said. Brinker also set about making Macbeth as simple as she could. “I spent a month cutting it,” she said. “All the battles and fight scenes, I kept. I cut any political reference of the time. Anything that was for [King] James, I got rid of it. I wanted a clean through-line.” It wasn’t arduous. “You know, when you have ghosts, murder and lust, you don’t have to do too much more to reel folks in,” she said. “It’s all there. Everything you need for a great story? All there.” Brinker hasn’t soft-pedaled the violence in the play. Macbeth is soaked in blood and shrouded in guilt, and Brinker saw no reason to sanitize the show. In fact, she made some decisions that draw the dramatic tension fairly taut. This Macbeth spares no tenderness for innocent bystanders. Auditions brought the director some delicious surprises — namely actor Jordan Love, a young, strapping man to fill the title role. “So often, when you see Macbeth, Macbeth is this 40or 50-something, grizzled warrior with a trophy wife who manipulates him with her sexuality. I wanted someone who could have a soul mate in Lady Macbeth,” Brinker said. “I lucked out. I got this hot young couple to play those roles, and it’s been pretty cool to watch these little moments they create. There’s real chemistry there.” Love plays opposite Ash Robbins, who said she’s always wanted to take on Lady Macbeth, a character drawn with such dimension that the name is assigned to real-life women who pursue political careers or dare to claim ambitions publicly. Lady Macbeth is often portrayed as a scheming woman with a taste for power that exceeds her conscience. “I think a lot of people have a lot of misconceptions about her,” Robbins said. “I’ve had some friends ask me, ‘Are you

going to play her shrill … or sexy and sultry?’ I think she’s misunderstood.” In this staging, Robbins said Lady Macbeth is more complicated than conniving. Brinker said the fact that there isn’t a big age gap between the actors changes the onstage dynamic. Robbins agreed. “He’s a thane,” Robbins said of Macbeth. “He’s a mighty warrior, and she loves him so intensely that she thinks he deserves to be king. She loves him so much that she’s willing to do whatever has to be done to get him there. I think she loses sight of her convictions. I think all women have the potential to do something dark for someone they love.” Theater veteran Pat Watson

plays Macduff, Macbeth’s friend and the conscience of the play. Watson’s no Shakespeare neophyte. He’s performed in Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Macduff is a reluctant hero, and Watson said he wants to explore his human side. “I think of him as a family man. You see him as a human being who loves his children,” he said. “After his friend kills his family, Macduff becomes someone who I think is going to need psychiatry, even if he won’t get it because there wasn’t that sort of thing in those days.” Brinker said her actors have to tell the story. They’ve been given swords, battle axes and

lots of blood. But the intentions are at the heart of the story. At its end, the story is about consequence and victories made hollow by loss. “I have so much respect for actors who can take these words and get up onstage and then make it sound like this stuff comes out of their mouths every day,” Brinker said. “Getting people over the language, getting the patterns and translating the ideas is the hardest part for the actors, because they’ve got to get the audience over the language. I have a lot of respect for these actors.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.
