Beaujolais Nouveau is less about fine wine and more about embracing the fall and the bounty it brings. The local celebration Beaujolais & More is the only fundraiser in Denton that supports the belle of downtown, the Campus Theatre.

Popping a cork for the Campus It’s no secret that Beaujolais Nouveau isn’t a top tier wine. What matters is the spirit surrounding the French tradition to celebrate the first crush of the Beaujolais wine region.

Beaujolais Nouveau is celebrated every year with festivals, fun and lots of wine. It’s a tradition that reaches back to the times when peasant workers tended the vineyard and crushed the grapes.

Denton took up the celebration years ago as the sole fundraiser for the Campus Theatre. This year, Beaujolais & More brings back a buffet of dishes from Denton’s favorite restaurants, crates of Beaujolais Nouveau

flown in from France and a selection of additional wines.

For $25, patrons can sample food that is savory to sweet and taste the wine.

There is a list of prizes to be given away, with a television, an iPod, and gift baskets among the lot.

The event is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17.

The juried exhibition arranges award-winning art from University of North Texas communication design alumni according to each piece’s place in history and trends.

“Our program has existed in one form or another since 1947, and in that time it has produced a great number of highly successful alumni and an impressive array of work,” said Alex Egner, assistant professor of communication design.

The communication design program is both rigorous and competitive, requiring that students not only have an adventurous sense of design, but a high level of technical skill and a grasp of psychology.

“UNTold + new” is a telling

exhibit. Design is more than mere print campaigns. Design can make or break products. For example, Apple products are celebrated not just because they are created by talented programmers and developers, but because of their topnotch “user interface,” otherwise known as design.

The exhibit, presented by the UNT College of Visual Arts and Design, features graphic design,

advertising, illustration, photography, copywriting and interactive design. Juror Patrick Coyne — editor of Communication Arts magazine — has selected 123 works from a field of more than 700 entries.

The exhibit opens Tuesday and runs through Dec. 17. An opening reception is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 17.

Cruz, the first Latino to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (Anna in the Tropics, 2003), uses flavors of Cuban culture to tell a surreal story about poet and dramatist Lorca, who enters a kind of purgatory after his assassination at the hands of fascists during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.

Symphony to present American classics for Veterans Day show The Lewisville Lake Symphony will present patriotic music at 7:30 p.m. Friday for Veterans Day at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N Charles St. in Old Town Lewisville.

The program will be repeated on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The program opens with Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man.” Also featured is Richard Rodgers’ “Victory at Sea” and medleys of tunes from the

American frontier and the Civil War. Interspersed throughout the program are five marches by John Philips Sousa, including “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Veterans and their families will be invited to stand when their branch of the five services is featured in the “Armed Forces Salute.”

Everybody who attends will get a flag.

Tickets are $25 on Friday and $20 on Sunday. Student

hen rehearsals for Cafe des Artistes: An Original Creation started, company members of Denton’s Sundown Collaborative Theatre couldn’t explain what the show would be about by opening night.

In August, director Tashina Richardson said the group of dancers, visual artists, singers and writers had but one mission: to consider the nature of inspiration.

The show opens today at Green Space Arts Collective, and has a form.

Boxcar Bandits make tracks

T

he Boxcar Bandits are sort of an unofficial house band of Dan’s Silverleaf. The local group gigs regularly at the downtown watering hole (every Monday before the group went on tour), spinning what the musicians have coined “North Texas Skunkgrass.”

The musicians aren’t trying to be cute with the label.

They’re just trying to slap a memorable and meaningful logo on the amalgamation of bluegrass, country and swing that they make with happy abandon. (Though numbers like “Cell Phone” sound like Russian or Gypsy folk dances handed down in the most Bavarian regions of Texas. Yes, the pacing of “Cell Phone” is suspiciously like a polka. Rex Emerson’s tenor banjo affects the sad mandolin music famous in Dr. Zhivago. It sounds strange, but the

Forget the image of J. Edgar Hoover as a cross-dressing, man-loving sourpuss. Instead, in the new bio-pic J. Edgar, director Clint Eastwood explains Hoover as a strangely tortured mama’s boy by rendering a “best hits” version of his eventful life.

But if the director at least pays homage to the salacious rumors about the founder and first head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, so much the better for entertainment purposes. Eastwood uses Dustin Black’s script and avoids turning out what could be a Oliver Stone-like barrage of every Hoover rumor to come along since his 1972 death. A nonstop weekly TV series would be needed to cover all of that ground.

Opens Friday.

Eastwood focuses instead on what made Hoover feared by every president he served under, while also giving time to what may have brought on his obsessions over communism and anything tilting left.

Hoover was and is a fascinating character, with plenty to admire but also with much to condemn. Eastwood covers his bases, even if particular scenes and sequences might not find basis on verifiable fact.

J. Edgar unfolds with Hoover dictating his memoirs, looking back on his career, hitting the big events, starting in 1919 as he tracks down domestic terrorists. He quickly becomes head of the newly created Bureau of Investigation, a position giving him the opportunity, if not the license, to initiate his career-long trampling of civil rights.

He meets and hires fresh law school graduate Tolson. In the 1930s, he creates modern forensics and enjoys successes

fighting nationally known criminals such as John Dillinger and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. But he bumbles the highprofile case of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. He also develops a fondness for wearing fine clothing and spending a day at the race track with Clyde.

Eastwood’s narrative never builds to any great epiphanies or climaxes but instead draws its interest from its main subject, with all his contradictions and foibles.

Cinematographer Tom Stern bathes his scenes in dark shadows, a fitting approach for this sepia-tinged production. But, for such a veteran director, it is surprising that Eastwood leaves his editors so little footage as to necessitate the film’s abundance of jarring, criss-cross, flip-flop editing.

hen the Flagship Detroit first flew the skies, America was a different place in a different

time.

Thanks to a donation from the foundation, up to 40 bidders can put a claim on a foundation membership during The Arts Guild of Denton’s annual Auction for the Arts. Those who bid the highest get a trip back through time

with their membership: a one-hour tour of the Dallas-Fort Worth area on the Flagship Detroit, a fully restored DC-3 passenger craft.

The Flagship Detroit was part of the American Airlines fleet of 84 Douglas DC-3s. The Detroit was built in 1937,

and the craft and fleet flew through 1947.

“Well, I think back then, it was a little more glamorous to fly,” Lemon said.

The average passenger was probably wealthy, paying $30 for a ticket from Boston to New York in 1937 — a lot of money in time when much of the country was devastated by the Great Depression. The airplane had 14 sleeping berths, which Lemon compares to the Pullman cars on passenger trains.

Lemon flew nearly 30 years for American before he retired. But hanging up his commercial pilot hat didn’t mean the Denton resident gave up his See FLAGSHIP on 10

Lemon joined seven others in 2004 in a pool to purchase the Flagship Detroit, which had been decommissioned and turned into “a spray plane.” Lemon said the investors got a vintage aircraft that carried tanks of insecticide in the fuselage, and had spray nozzles on the wings.

“We had to totally remodel the inside,” he said. “We buffed the outside. I think it’s a beautiful plane.

It’s got great lines, and it’s just a great airplane.”

The Detroit reflects the curves and sophistication of the automobiles of the era, like the 1936 Peugeot 402 Andreau — which was elegant and substantial at the same time.

Lemon has piloted the plane, and says it’s a singular experience.

a commercial jet today,” he said. “It’s a little louder, it’s smaller, and you fly a lot lower. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of tours we’ve taken, I can’t remember one person who ever came up to me afterward and said they didn’t enjoy it.”

The Flagship Detroit Foundation memberships will be offered during the live auction at varying levels.

“We have several pilots who fly

this plane, and we almost fight to be able to fly it,” Lemon said. “It’s an airplane that literally changed commercial aviation. There’s nothing like being up there and firing up those radial engines. It’s a great feeling.”

ita Burleson isn’t shy about where the annual Auction for the Arts falls on her priority list of events to promote via wordof-mouth marketing.

“My big message all year has been that now, more than ever, we need people to go to that silent auction,” said Burleson, president of The Arts Guild of Denton. The guild is the fundraising arm of the Greater Denton Arts Council, a local nonprofit that promotes the city’s performing and visual arts to all ages.

The silent auction is a prime place for bargain hunters with an eye for value. Burleson points to the elaborate hostess baskets that start at $15.

“People will probably get outbid on those,” she said. “Those are a good value. If you tried to put together a hostess basket yourself, you probably couldn’t do it like this for $15.”

There are some bigger-ticket items in the silent auction, however.

“There’s a $1,600 piece of art in there, but there are also lots of things you can get for the people on your Christmas list,” she said.

Bidders, take note: There are lots of items for men.

Golf getaways will be up for sale, and Burleson said a NFL-sanctioned collection of team patches and tickets will be on the shelf.

Burleson said she has been impressed by “a strong sense of community” on the part of donors, volunteers and bidders.

“Something that has gotten more popular over the last several years are these experiences that members put together. There are donors and volunteers who open their homes for special evenings. Like this year, we’re auctioning off an English dinner. A group of people go in together to organize the party, and then a group of people will go in together to bid on it,” she said.

The auction is two days away, but word has gotten out about a vacation to a Florida condo and golf excursion, and two groups of people are already preparing bids.

This year, Burleson joined guild president-elect Mary Woods and Denton landscaping mogul Andre “Frenchy” Rheault to offer “The Three Amigos,” an evening of margaritas and Californiastyle Mexican cuisine cooked by Burleson and hosted by Woods at her Decatur farm. Rheault will have the winning bidders taken to the farm in his signature orange Cadillac limousine.

Volunteers are turning the arts center into vintage Vegas, including a Big Wheel of Fortune, slot machines and a performance by the Brat Pack.

“There’s a rumor going around that Elvis has been sighted, and that he might turn up at the auction,” Burleson said.
