TWU serves up ‘Trifle’ Play starts out as 1835 rom-com, then turns deadly

he Texas Woman’s University drama program presents Alfred de Musset’s Don’t Trifle With Love this weekend. Playwright Alfred de Musset wrote Don’t Trifle With Love in 1835 in response to his own ill-fated love affair with writer George Sand (nee Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin). De Musset writes what looks like a light-

hearted romantic comedy. By the final act, though, the stakes have turned deadly. TWU faculty member Patrick Bynane directs. He takes advantage of the Redbud Theater’s classic proscenium arch, paying tribute to the traditions of 19th-century romanticism in both his staging and TWU professor Rhonda Gorman’s detailed scenic and costume designs. The set will feature a modified wing and drop system, and the costumes stay true to the period and style of early 19th-century France. The production will run

Paper jungles, worlds of color T

he pop-up book adaptation of Frank L. Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a marvel. It marries literature to an art form that is both architecture and engineering. That hot air balloon the wizard lifts off in? Under the fingers (and brainpower) of paper engineers Matthew Reinhart and Robert Sabuda, a version of that scene hovers over two thick pages. Bright and deep greens catch the light, and the little figures — the cowardly lion, the tin woodsman and the scarecrow — gaze up at the ascending basket. Reinhart will visit Denton on

The pop-up books are handcrafted. They have layers, moving parts and surprises — all made from neatly folded or conjoined angles of paper. The exhibit includes a variety of media and techniques. There are picture book illustrations in

batik, marbleized paper mosaic, and delicate cut paper. There are pop-up books rendered in pencil, marker, watercolor, acrylic and linoleum block print. The exhibition features imaginative two-dimensional artworks from such books as Saint Valentine, The Blizzard’s Robe and The Paper Dragon, as well as innovatively engineered three-dimensional pages from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Encyclopedia Prehistorica

series, Young Naturalist’s PopUp Handbook: Beetles and Butterflies, Cinderella, and Star Wars: A Pop-up Guide to the Galaxies, among others. Pterodactyl ‘Spills Out’ a little nostalgia

Forget the name. Brooklyn boys Pterodactyl aren’t dredging up Mesozoic misery. It’s just that, sometimes, a little nostalgia makes it easier to give voice to the anxiety that belongs to a generation and a band. Bassist Jesse Hodges, who grew up in Fort Worth, said each band member brought his own ideas, emotions and themes to the latest album, Spills Out. The trio comes to Denton on a tour promoting the record, which was released Tuesday on Jagjaguwar. The band plays Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios tonight. “We all came to this record with different thoughts, I think. And because of that, I think if you were to ask each of us about each song, the songs mean something different to each of us. And I don’t think that hurts the record,” Hodges said, doggedly pursuing an interview while driving crosscountry, even passing a forest fire he described as “atrocious, but beautiful.” Judging from the song titles alone, Spills Out reads like imagined chapter titles of a soundtrack the band might have made for The Walking Dead, AMC’s dystopian fantasy about a 21st-century zombie apocalypse. “School Glue” could surely be found in a survivor’s satchel, and “Hold Still” could be the strangled cry to a loved one when the marauding horde drags its rotting feet ever closer to an imagined bunker. Even “Nerds” could be an angular rhapsody about the unlikely hero in such a landscape. But Spills Out isn’t a concept record. In fact, Hodges said it was more like an experiment in recording techniques. It’s a record of the band’s relationship with recording spaces. “We had done this European thing where we tried different places when we recorded song, and we were playing with demos, and what does that even mean,” Hodges said. “We were really looking at how we

wanted to finish the songs. Like, were we going to do something really polished, or were we going to be more lofi?” Hodges said he has a penchant for recording demos. He often likes the way a song sounds on its maiden voyage in a recording location — whether it’s a studio or a house. Lo-fi can be more satisfying than a tricked-out studio, he said. “Lo-fi is like the charmer,” he said. “Lo-fi is the gambler. Lo-fi is the guy who walks into the room and he’s already the coolest guy in the room. When someone overproduces lo-fi, that’s silly, I think.” If Spills Out strikes listeners as sad and nostalgic, that’s because it does look back. Even the sunny guitars on “Hold Still” are full of a wistfulness. The songs were written in the two years that followed the previous album, Worldwild. Romances ended, Kremer left a job teaching high school

physics. A band member lost a close friend. A viola screams on “Zombies,” when mixed with the trio’s building “bah-bah-ba-babaaahs” invoke the melancholy of 1960s-era rock, all while convincing you that the undead might shuffle blindly, but the appetite within is as sweeping as any aria. The dirge-like “Allergy Shots” features the refrain “the grass isn’t greener/ if there is no grass at all” set off against a fuzzy, marching guitar and distorted, keening vocal howls. “Searchers” proclaims “once/we were young/and together/it was easy to feel love” and then arrives at a joyful-sounding chorus, except the narrator doesn’t recognize the man he was. Drums thunder in, and a pretty harmony slips into dissonance. Hodges said he, Marlin and Kremer all love the music of Motown, and can’t deny the

influence of 1970s soul. “I love the Delfonics, and I know there were moments where we’ve sat around and played the Temptations’ ‘Just My Imagination,’ but I can’t say that we set out to put those sounds in the record,” Hodges said. Sure enough, a dash of blueeyed soul makes its way into a whole lot of indie rock. It’s not that one imagines Pterodactyl doing synchronized dance moves. It’s that a longing for things that have been lost permeates Spills Out, as does the sensation that Hodges, Kremer and Marlin crave their release. Sounds like: The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson took up with the Byrds and spent time writing pop songs in Detroit’s Foxtown. Think the easy bounce of doo-wop reimagined as sad, soulful memory songs. Just when you think things are lightening up, things get deflated.

odayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the day. Volunteers plan to drain bottles of the so-so but celebrated Beaujolais Nouveau. The event is Beaujolais & More wine tasting. The cause? Keeping the Campus Theatre ready for its audiences, its actors and its future. More than 20 local restaurants will whip up hors dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;eouvres and dishes to pair with the Beaujolais Nouveau. The annual celebration is part of the international party around a wine that sees French vintners packing the wine onto jets so it can arrive for revelers on the third Thursday of November. Near the end of The Descendants, a middle-aged man wakes up his daughter’s boyfriend — who’s sleeping on the couch — and asks why he can’t connect with his daughter. It’s obvious that Matt King (George Clooney) nears the end of his understanding and patience, not only because of his helplessness with daughter Alexandra (Shailene Woodley), but also because of the many other problems he juggles. King lives in Hawaii and descends from some of the state’s founders, who left him a huge legacy of land and money. land holdings, his wife suffers a boating accident which sends her into a vegetative state — not a plot spoiler as the film opens with her in the hospital. She has left a will mandating that she not be resuscitated after a period of time, which coincides with Matt’s scheduled land decision. To compound the building stress and guilt of this delicate state, King and his wife had not had a good relationship when her accident occurred. Clooney powerfully portrays the pressurized Matt King as he gathers his two daughters, Alexandra and 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller), in an attempt to hold his family together, something he’s floundered at previously. But during his attempt to fortify, other family secrets reveal themselves. These discoveries illustrate King’s impossible task of re-creating a nuclear family. They also put King under even greater pressure about the

land deal from his entire extended family, which includes a number of cousins, his wife’s senile mother and belligerent father. Everyone connected must balance the inequitable and thankless dispersal of family riches with the encroaching death of King’s wife. And the reactions vary infinitely, with each helping to complete this layered family portrait. With such rich material, Payne delivers a series of highly emotional, resonant scenes, involving both the pain involved with the death of a family member and also with other components of grief and even betrayal. Payne has such a steady hand and sure feel for his material, he can still inject small amounts of levity into the narrative to further heighten the film’s emotional effectiveness. All of which makes The Descendants a fulfilling yet bittersweet experience, one rarely seen in today’s movies.

Christmas act had been simmering away like wassail. “Mike Sizer, our sax player, played with the Dukes of Dixieland for years,” Howard said. “It turns out that when he was playing with the Dukes, he did some arrangements of Christmas music that the band played with the Chicago Philharmonic and some other symphonies that the band played with.” Howard said the Gumbo Kings have used Sizer’s arrangements nearly each Christmas. “You know, we loved playing them,” Howard said. “They’re really good arrangements. Mike is really skilled. We’d play the music and we’d always say, ‘We need to record this stuff.’ Then everyone would get busy after Christ-

mas and it wouldn’t happen. Finally, I kind of had to say, ‘Look guys, are we going to do this or not?’” The band members recorded the record in roughly four days — two of which were spent in Crystal Clear, a premier studio in Dallas, and the studio where the University of North Texas One O’clock Lab Band records. “We were able to record [simultaneously],” Howard said. “That was a treat. In our other recordings, we’d record the instrumentation and then have to go back in and overdub the vocals. Sizer came with serious credentials, and Howard changes the subject when someone mentions that he recorded and toured with Wings — the poprock side project of Beatles melody man Paul McCartney. Howard sporadically plays trumpet for the Blues Brothers, thanks to his friendship and professional rapport with UNT alumnus “Blue” Lou Marini. The band put recording on hold — and performing, too — after the sudden death of bassist Kerby Stewart in 2008. Things have picked up for the sextet. They joined a stellar group of jazzers who perform regularly at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, where weekly jazz nights pack the popular patio. Piper fits the bill. In “Christmas Time Is Here,” Piper hearkens back to the smooth delivery of Dean Martin and Baker spins a chestnut-roaster of a trombone solo. Howard said he enjoys playing all the tunes, but he is partial to one. “I really like the arrangement of ‘Oh Holy Night,’ which is very much a traditional New Orleans number,” he said. Howard said the band decided to donate a third of the sales to the North Texas Food Bank, both because it takes advantage of the season’s goodwill and because food banks across the nation are struggling to meet the need of a country that has been capsized by a deep recession. “I was watching something on a show, maybe it was 60 Minutes,” Howard said. “But there was a story about a man who had lost his job, and he and his family were living in their car. It was a story about

how so many people have lost their jobs and are having such a hard time. The family was able to get back into some housing, but their children were going to bed hungry. It brought tears to my eyes. “I can go get a good meal anytime I want at a fine restaurant. I’m doing OK. But it gets to the point where [complaining] about it doesn’t accomplish anything. You have to take action.” Howard said the food bank will get paid before the musicians pay themselves. The CD is available at Penders Music Co., 314 S.
