T

he Texas Woman’s University drama program presents Alfred de Musset’s Don’t Trifle With Love this weekend. Playwright Alfred de Musset wrote Don’t Trifle With Love in 1835 in response to his own ill-fated love affair with writer George Sand (nee Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin). De Musset writes what looks like a light-

hearted romantic comedy. By the final act, though, the stakes have turned deadly. TWU faculty member Patrick Bynane directs. He takes advantage of the Redbud Theater’s classic proscenium arch, paying tribute to the traditions of 19th-century romanticism in both his staging and TWU professor Rhonda Gorman’s detailed scenic and costume designs. The set will feature a modified wing and drop system, and the costumes stay true to the period and style of early 19th-century France. The production will run

Thursday through Sunday in the Redbud Theater Complex, on the northwest side of Hubbard Hall, which is northwest of Administration Drive at Bell Avenue. Show times are 4 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. he pop-up book adaptation of Frank L. Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a marvel. It marries literature to an art form that is both architecture and engineering. That hot air balloon the wizard lifts off in? Under the fingers (and brainpower) of paper engineers Matthew Reinhart and Robert Sabuda, a version of that scene hovers over two thick pages. Bright and deep greens catch the light, and the little figures — the cowardly lion, the tin woodsman and the scarecrow — gaze up at the ascending basket. Reinhart will visit Denton on

Prehistoric longings

Pterodactyl ‘Spills Out’ a little nostalgia

By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

Forget the name. Brooklyn boys Pterodactyl aren’t dredging up Mesozoic misery. It’s just that, sometimes, a little nostalgia makes it easier to give voice to the anxiety that belongs to a generation and a band. Bassist Jesse Hodges, who grew up in Fort Worth, said each band member brought his own ideas, emotions and themes to the latest album, Spills Out. The trio comes to Denton on a tour promoting the record, which was released Tuesday on Jagjaguwar. The band plays Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios tonight. “We all came to this record with different thoughts, I think. And because of that, I think if you were to ask each of us about each song, the songs mean something different to each of us. And I don’t think that hurts the record,” Hodges said, doggedly pursuing an interview while driving crosscountry, even passing a forest fire he described as “atrocious, but beautiful.” Judging from the song titles alone, Spills Out reads like imagined chapter titles of a soundtrack the band might have made for The Walking Dead, AMC’s dystopian fantasy about a 21st-century zombie apocalypse. “School Glue” could surely be found in a survivor’s satchel, and “Hold Still” could be the strangled cry to a loved one when the marauding horde drags its rotting feet ever closer to an imagined bunker. Even “Nerds” could be an angular rhapsody about the unlikely hero in such a landscape. But Spills Out isn’t a concept record. In fact, Hodges said it was more like an experiment in recording techniques. It’s a record of the band’s relationship with recording spaces. “We had done this European thing where we tried different places when we recorded song, and we were playing with demos, and what does that even mean,” Hodges said. “We were really looking at how we

wanted to finish the songs. Like, were we going to do something really polished, or were we going to be more lofi?” Hodges said he has a penchant for recording demos. He often likes the way a song sounds on its maiden voyage in a recording location — whether it’s a studio or a house. Lo-fi can be more satisfying than a tricked-out studio, he said. “Lo-fi is like the charmer,” he said. “Lo-fi is the gambler. Lo-fi is the guy who walks into the room and he’s already the coolest guy in the room. When someone overproduces lo-fi, that’s silly, I think.” If Spills Out strikes listeners as sad and nostalgic, that’s because it does look back. Even the sunny guitars on “Hold Still” are full of a wistfulness. The songs were written in the two years that followed the previous album, Worldwild. Romances ended, Kremer left a job teaching high school

physics. A band member lost a close friend. A viola screams on “Zombies,” when mixed with the trio’s building “bah-bah-ba-babaaahs” invoke the melancholy of 1960s-era rock, all while convincing you that the undead might shuffle blindly, but the appetite within is as sweeping as any aria. The dirge-like “Allergy Shots” features the refrain “the grass isn’t greener/ if there is no grass at all” set off against a fuzzy, marching guitar and distorted, keening vocal howls. “Searchers” proclaims “once/we were young/and together/it was easy to feel love” and then arrives at a joyful-sounding chorus, except the narrator doesn’t recognize the man he was. Drums thunder in, and a pretty harmony slips into dissonance. Hodges said he, Marlin and Kremer all love the music of Motown, and can’t deny the

influence of 1970s soul. “I love the Delfonics, and I know there were moments where we’ve sat around and played the Temptations’ ‘Just My Imagination,’ but I can’t say that we set out to put those sounds in the record,” Hodges said. Sure enough, a dash of blueeyed soul makes its way into a whole lot of indie rock. It’s not that one imagines Pterodactyl doing synchronized dance moves. It’s that a longing for things that have been lost permeates Spills Out, as does the sensation that Hodges, Kremer and Marlin crave their release. Sounds like: The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson took up with the Byrds and spent time writing pop songs in Detroit’s Foxtown. Think the easy bounce of doo-wop reimagined as sad, soulful memory songs. Just when you think things are lightening up, things get deflated.

A troubled man (George Clooney) struggles with his relationship with his daughter (Shailene Woodley) in The Descendants. Fox Searchlight

Everyman Atlas By Boo Allen Film Critic

Near the end of The Descendants, a middle-aged man wakes up his daughter’s boyfriend — who’s sleeping on the couch — and asks why he can’t connect with his daughter. Why is the 17-yearold girl so rebellious? What could dad possibly do differently? What is he doing wrong? It’s obvious that Matt King (George Clooney) nears the end of his understanding and patience, not only because of his helplessness with daughter Alexandra (Shailene Woodley), but also because of the many other problems he juggles. The Descendants walks through the exhausting five stages of death and dying and then throws in a few more stages not covered in the textbooks. In examining these agonizing conditions, director and co-writer Alexander Payne again shows the most acute and

perceptive understanding of the American psyche of any current director. Payne and fellow writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash use Kaui Hart Hemmings’ novel to burden Matt King with a biblical amount of woes, a somewhat surprising state considering King’s privileged status. King lives in Hawaii and descends from some of the state’s founders, who left him a huge legacy of land and money. About the time he faces a deadline on making a multiple family-wide decision on how to disperse lucrative

Troubled man can’t shrug off grief in ‘Descendants’

land holdings, his wife suffers a boating accident which sends her into a vegetative state — not a plot spoiler as the film opens with her in the hospital. She has left a will mandating that she not be resuscitated after a period of time, which coincides with Matt’s scheduled land decision. To compound the building stress and guilt of this delicate state, King and his wife had not had a good relationship when her accident occurred. Clooney powerfully portrays the pressurized Matt King as he gathers his two daughters, Alexandra and 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller), in an attempt to hold his family together, something he’s floundered at previously. But during his attempt to fortify, other family secrets reveal themselves. These discoveries illustrate King’s impossible task of re-creating a nuclear family. They also put King under even greater pressure about the

land deal from his entire extended family, which includes a number of cousins, his wife’s senile mother and belligerent father. Everyone connected must balance the inequitable and thankless dispersal of family riches with the encroaching death of King’s wife. And the reactions vary infinitely, with each helping to complete this layered family portrait. With such rich material, Payne delivers a series of highly emotional, resonant scenes, involving both the pain involved with the death of a family member and also with other components of grief and even betrayal. Payne has such a steady hand and sure feel for his material, he can still inject small amounts of levity into the narrative to further heighten the film’s emotional effectiveness. All of which makes The Descendants a fulfilling yet bittersweet experience, one rarely seen in today’s movies.

he N’Awlins Gumbo Kings have been known to make a room full of diners twirl dinner napkins in the air to show love for the band’s Dixieland jazz. Sunday night, the crew of jazz cats hopes to make the patio of Sweetwater Grill & Tavern feel like singing, swinging and getting merry like Christmas — as Maya Angelou put it. cerned, Christmastime is here, and with it, charity. Holiday Gumbo marks the return of the Gumbo Kings as a bona fide recording act. Group founder and Lake Dallas resident Steve Howard said the band’s

Christmas act had been simmering away like wassail. “Mike Sizer, our sax player, played with the Dukes of Dixieland for years,” Howard said. “It turns out that when he was playing with the Dukes, he did some arrangements of Christmas music that the band played with the Chicago Philharmonic and some other symphonies that the band played with.” Howard said the Gumbo Kings have used Sizer’s arrangements nearly each Christmas. “You know, we loved playing them,” Howard said. “They’re really good arrangements. Mike is really skilled. We’d play the music and we’d always say, ‘We need to record this stuff.’ Then everyone would get busy after Christ-

mas and it wouldn’t happen. Finally, I kind of had to say, ‘Look guys, are we going to do this or not?’” The band members recorded the record in roughly four days — two of which were spent in Crystal Clear, a premier studio in Dallas, and the studio where the University of North Texas One O’clock Lab Band records. “We were able to record [simultaneously],” Howard said. “That was a treat. In our other recordings, we’d record the instrumentation and then have to go back in and overdub the vocals. This way, we were able to record pretty much the way we play when we do a gig.” The Gumbo Kings got its start at an See GUMBO KINGS on 10

Sizer came with serious credentials, and Howard changes the subject when someone mentions that he recorded and toured with Wings — the poprock side project of Beatles melody man Paul McCartney. Howard sporadically plays trumpet for the Blues Brothers, thanks to his friendship and professional rapport with UNT alumnus “Blue” Lou Marini. The band put recording on hold — and performing, too — after the sudden death of bassist Kerby Stewart in 2008. Things have picked up for the sextet. They joined a stellar group of jazzers who perform regularly at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, where weekly jazz nights pack the popular patio. Brad Leali plays regularly, and the Sweetwater Jazz Quartet is made up of respected musi-

Piper fits the bill. In “Christmas Time Is Here,” Piper hearkens back to the smooth delivery of Dean Martin and Baker spins a chestnut-roaster of a trombone solo. Howard said he enjoys playing all the tunes, but he is partial to one. “I really like the arrangement of ‘Oh Holy Night,’ which is very much a traditional New Orleans number,” he said. Howard said the band decided to donate a third of the sales to the North Texas Food Bank, both because it takes advantage of the season’s goodwill and because food banks across the nation are struggling to meet the need of a country that has been capsized by a deep recession. “I was watching something on a show, maybe it was 60 Minutes,” Howard said. “But there was a story about a man who had lost his job, and he and his family were living in their car. It was a story about

how so many people have lost their jobs and are having such a hard time. The family was able to get back into some housing, but their children were going to bed hungry. It brought tears to my eyes. “I can go get a good meal anytime I want at a fine restaurant. I’m doing OK. But it gets to the point where [complaining] about it doesn’t accomplish anything. You have to take action.” Howard said the food bank will get paid before the musicians pay themselves. The CD is available at Penders Music Co., 314 S. Elm St., and at the band’s website, www.gumbokings.com. Copies of the album will also be available at all upcoming performances. The CD costs $15.

El Pariente Roadside grocery and music store serves exemplary Mexican fare. High scores for authenticity and freshness of ingredients. OPENING FRIDAY

Happy Feet Two (###1/2) The dancing, singing penguins are as adorable as ever. Yet a couple of shrimplike krill almost steal the show in this animated sequel that sticks to the formula of the original while adding enough variety to give it a life of its own. It helps to have Brad Pitt and Matt Damon voicing the krill with great companion ability as they join a vocal cast that includes returning stars Elijah Wood and Robin Williams. Wood’s tap-dancing penguin now is a dad dealing with a misfit, runaway son embarrassed over his own lack of rhythm. Director and co-writer George Miller, who handled the same chores on the 2006 Academy Award-winning first film, keeps the focus on penguins in peril while adding an interesting nature-inperspective angle with the side journey of those tiny krill trying to find their place in a world of bigger, hungrier things. Rated PG, 99 minutes. — The Associated Press The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 In the first half of the conclusion to the Twilight series, human Bella and vampire Edward wed and conceive a child, with dangerous unforeseen consequences. With Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Written by Melissa Rosenberg. Directed by Bill Condon. Rated PG-13, 117 minutes. — Los Angeles Times

He helps relocate the dolphin to an animal rehabilitation facility. There, a friendly marine biologist (Harry Connick Jr.) nurses the dolphin back to health with the help of a military expert (Morgan Freeman) in prosthetics. With Ashley Judd and Kris Kristofferson. uptight Southern town that has banned dancing and rock music in this remake of the 1984 film of the same name. With Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Andie MacDowell and Dennis Quaid. Rated PG-13, 113 minutes. — LAT Immortals When a bloodthirsty, power-hungry king rampages across ancient Greece in search of a legendary weapon, a brave young stonemason assembles a band to stop him. With Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas and Freida Pinto. In 3-D. Rated R, 110 minutes. — LAT In Time (###) In this futuristic science-fiction flick from writer-director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca), time is money, literally. People quit aging at 25 and, at 50, look like Olivia Wilde. Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried play a pair of lovers who become Robin Hood (and Bonnie and Clyde), “stealing” time from the rich and giving it to the oppressed poor.

Cillian Murphy plays the “timekeeper” chasing them. Repetitive and somewhat transparent, but thoughtprovoking on many levels. Rated PG13, 109 minutes. — B.A. J. Edgar (###) Leonardo DiCaprio plays FBI founder and longtime head J. Edgar Hoover. Clint Eastwood directs this “best hits” version of Hoover's life, with only a glancing nod towards the more salacious aspects of Hoover’s private life. Naomi Watts plays Hoover’s longtime secretary and Armie Hammer portrays Hoover’s inseparable friend and colleague Clyde Tolson. Rated R, 137 minutes. — B.A. Jack and Jill A successful advertising executive with a beautiful wife and kids dreads the annual Thanksgiving visit of his passiveaggressive twin sister. With Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes and Al Pacino. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — LAT Moneyball (###) Brad Pitt stars in

this entertaining but somewhat repetitious true story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane. When forced to field a team with limited funds, he upsets the tradition-laden sport of baseball with the help of a young Yale economist (Jonah Hill). But they get results. With Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Wright. Rated PG-13, 133 minutes. — B.A. Paranormal Activity 3 A mysterious evil presence haunts a family. Written by Christopher B. Landon. Directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost. Rated R, 74 minutes. — LAT Puss in Boots (####) A spinoff of the Shrek franchise, this is actually a prequel, providing the origin story of the diminutive, swashbuckling kitty voiced with great charisma, as always, by Antonio Banderas. At the film’s start, Puss is an outlaw in his small, Spanish hometown. Flashbacks take us to his childhood

at an orphanage, where he was best friends with a brainy, ambitious Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). Now, Humpty’s partner in crime is the dangerous master thief Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). Quick, lively, family entertainment. In 3-D. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — AP Real Steel (##) A bad idea is a bad idea, even dressed up with all the computer effects and heavy-metal action that Hollywood can buy. And the idea of robots boxing is a bad one, creating some embarrassingly awful moments for Hugh Jackman as an ex-fighter scraping by in the near future as a promoter of brawling machines that have taken over the sport from human boxers. A horribly predictable mash-up of Rocky, The Champ and Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots, Real Steel puts director Shawn Levy (the Night at the Museum movies) in contention with fellow robot handler Michael Bay for the title of worst blockbuster filmmaker in show business. Rated PG13, 127 minutes. — AP The Rum Diary (###) If Batman and the X-Men get prequels, why not Hunter S. Thompson? The film is based on Thompson’s heavily autobiographical novel that he wrote as a 22-year-old in the early 1960s after a stint as a newspaper reporter in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This is Thompson pre-Gonzo, just a young novelistreporter (technically an alter ego named Paul Kemp, played by Johnny Depp) trying to find his voice as a writer. Entertaining and well-intended, the film comes just shy of discovering its own voice. With Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli and Giovanni Ribisi. Rated R, 120 minutes. — AP The Skin I Live In (###1/2) Spanish director Pedro Almodovar mixes science fiction, fact and horror in this genre-bending tale of a research physician (Antonio Banderas) who grafts a mysterious woman’s body with new skin. Why he does it makes up the bulk of this odd film from a director used to throwing cinematic curves. Rated R, 120 minutes. At the Angelika Plano. — B.A. Tower Heist (###1/2) This is an ensemble, and a strong one at that, led by Ben Stiller, Alan Alda, Matthew Broderick, Casey Affleck and Tea Leoni. When financial guru Arthur Shaw (Alda) is charged with stealing billions from his investors — including the staff of his luxury high-rise — they come up with a plan to steal their money back. Brett Ratner’s blast of an action comedy truly brings out the best in Eddie Murphy, who’s fast-talking, flummoxed and full of false bravado as a low-level thief. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. — AP A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas The arrival of a mysterious package on Christmas Eve leads to stoner pals Harold and Kumar reuniting six years after their last misadventure to embark on an illadvised journey through New York City. With John Cho, Kal Penn, Paula Garces and Danneel Harris. In 3-D. Rated R, 90 minutes. — LAT
