Torch bearer Beerman puts together fifth Crawl to raise money for firefighter fund

here’s more than one way to give thanks. Brian “Beerman” Houser has spent the last four Thanksgiving holiday weekends making money for the Denton County Firefighters Association. This weekend marks the fifth year Houser has hosted a fundraising pub crawl. For Houser, an established country-folk musician in Denton, each crawl has been another tip of his cowboy hat to firefighters. Houser nearly lost his home on a bitterly cold day last February, but Denton firefighters saved the house. Just two weeks prior, Houser and his wife, Joy, received the 2010 Citizen Meritorious Service Award at the annual firefighters’ awards ceremony. “When we started the Crawl, we just wanted to honor our

fallen firefighters and show our appreciation to the firefighters who put their lives at risk every day,” Houser Houser said. “Now, we have seen firsthand the skills and bravery of these local heroes.” This year, the singer-songwriter said the department’s employees fought local fires as well as pitching in to extinguish devastating wildfires in Possum Kingdom and Bastrop. Crawl V continues the tradition of a downtown pub crawl and auction to benefit the Denton Firefighters Memorial Fund in memory of Michael Joseph “Billy Ray” Valentine. The event starts at 5 p.m. Saturday at Dan’s Silverleaf, then proceeds to several other

Entertainment begins with a special bagpipe tribute by firefighter honor guards from across the Dallas-Fort Worth region. The bagpipes and drums will lead the entire group of pub crawlers to each location — a ceremony Houser has said attracts spontaneous pub crawlers.

The school’s PTA is raising money for a new playground at the school. The book fair includes a showcase of the school’s reading and arts program, the Book Talk Celebration. Barnes & Noble

will give a percentage of the proceeds on sales made with special vouchers to the elementary school playground project. The signing will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the local bookstore. Arthur Christmas (###1/2) This pleasant holiday treat from Aardman, the British animation outfit behind Chicken Run and the Wallace and Gromit cartoons, has the old-fashioned spirit of Christmas at heart, spinning a snowflake-light tale with warmth, energy and goofy humor. The movie unveils the vast high-tech enterprise run by Santa to deliver all those presents as his big-hearted but bumbling younger son, Arthur (voiced by James McAvoy), races to deliver a single gift that fell through the cracks. The delightful, drolly funny voice cast includes Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Hugh Laurie, Imelda Staunton and Ashley Jensen. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — The Associated Press Hugo (####) Martin Scorsese uncharacteristically directs an elegiac, moving 3-D film about Hugo (Asa Butterfield), a boy hiding and living in a Paris train station around 1930. He befriends a toy store owner (Ben Kingsley) who turns out to be George Melies, a forgotten silent film pioneer. Various other subplots from Brian Selznick’s novel play out with an excellent cast, and are complimented by stunning special effects in which 3-D is, for once, appropriate and put to positive use. Rated PG, 126 minutes. — Boo Allen Melancholia (###1/2) Controversial film from even more controversial director Lars Von Trier about a woman (Kirsten Dunst) being married in the home of her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg), bringing about a series of disasters. To compound the troubles, and the weirdness, a huge asteroid named Melancholia hurtles towards earth bringing certain destruction. The dialogue from Nicholas Stoller and Segel’s script often remarks upon the lost Muppet generation, making transparent the appeal for young converts. And director James Bobin compounds the irony with a meta-approach that often has characters remarking on the movie itself. None of which suggests that the movie does not take itself seriously, because it indeed has a mission to please young audiences, and, for the most part, it succeeds.

In The Muppets, everything old is new again. Or at least that’s the unashamed approach taken by this first feature film in 12 years from this onceformidable franchise. The Muppets and its makers let us know from the start that they are out to win over a new generation, a group so far deprived of the Muppets’ entertaining diversions. Time will tell whether the plea succeeds, but the impressive start revives many of Jim Henson’s original creations — Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, Fozzie, et al. — and gives them supporting help in the form of a bizarrely wide range of per-

sonalities, ranging from Disney tween favorite Selena Gomez and young star Rico Rodriguez, to the likes of Mickey Rooney (for the dozen or so audience members who remember Andy Hardy) to manlike creatures such as James Carville. Jason Segel and Amy Adams play second bananas to the Muppets as Gary and Mary, a couple who decide to celebrate their 10th anniversary together

by traveling to Los Angeles with Gary’s brother Walter, who looks suspiciously like a Muppet. In L.A., they find the onceglorious Muppet studio shabby and run down and about to be sold to the appropriately named evil oil tycoon Tex Richman (Chris Cooper), who plans to drill for oil on the site. But the Muppets can still save their old haunt if they raise $10 million. This device sets up the Muppet Road Trip, gathering the familiar names back to L.A. where they rehearse for their upcoming telethon, an enterprise of great pith and moment. Organizers want holiday festival to put Denton and its talents in the spotlight By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

he organizers have named it the Holiday Music Spectacular. The annual holiday party on the downtown Square is bound to feel a bit different this year. After nearly 20 years, Denton’s hometown musical treasure, Brave Combo, won’t send revelers into the thick of the holiday season with “The Chicken Dance” or the band’s venerated “Hokey Pokey.” This year, the concluding concert makes way for a slate of Denton musicians known for headline-grabbing folk and jazz music: Sarah Jaffe, members of Midlake and Paul Slavens. This year’s celebration retains probably the longest-running musical tradition of the lighting festival: The Denton Community Band will get things started with the annual holiday sing-along, just before dignitaries turn on the Christmas tree lights and the festival stages get going. Marcus Watson, the outgoing president of the Holiday Festival Association, said organizers were itching for a change right about the time Denton started getting serious about Halloween. “That’s when we got David Pierce involved in the event,” said Watson. “Seeing what he did with Cirque du Horror, and how he’s just a sweet

That, and the fact that Denton has gotten so much attention, nationally and even internationally, for our music. We thought the lighting festival could really promote that.” Pierce said he took a cue from his friends when he recruited an 11-piece holiday orchestra with brass, winds and some percussion. “Because of the willingness of my friends to help out with Cirque du Horror, I thought, ‘Why not create something for the holiday lighting?’” he said. Cirque du Horror is an oldfashioned Halloween musical that Pierce created from whole cloth. Last Halloween, Pierce led volunteers in coordinating the first-ever Denton’s Day of the Dead, a street carnival that ended with Cirque performances. Now, Pierce is arranging holiday music and rehearsing with the headliners. “I’ll be collaborating with

We’ve already had a lot of people tell us that they’ll be able to bring their kids for the first time, because we aren’t doing this on a school night.” Watson, co-owner of Little Guys Movers, said the committee has an eye on making the holiday event a bigger destination event than it already is. “Being involved with Dan’s Silverleaf and 35 Denton, we’re about getting people to come to Denton and stay in our hotels and motels,” he said.
