T

he lineup for Friday’s 23rd annual Denton Holiday Lighting Festival has earned more heft since the announcement that local luminaries Paul Slavens, indiefolk artist Sarah Jaffe and members of Midlake would join the 11-piece Holiday Lighting Orchestra. When the crowds gather on the downtown Denton Square, not only will they get some of the lush orchestration that defined Bing Crosby and other classic purveyors of American Christmas music, they’re bound to get a sampling of folksy music, some cooking jazz and a musical hybrid that could only come from Denton. Grammy-nominated composer and trombone player Steve Wiest, who directs the University of North Texas One O’clock Lab Band, will be a special guest, and two-time Grammy winners Bubba Hernandez and Jeffrey Barnes are to be

ow did the University of North Texas nurture a visual arts college whose graduates have shown in the Dallas Museum of Art, the Whitney and in prestigious collections here and overseas? D. Jack Davis, a UNT professor emeritus who retired this summer after 40 years with the school’s College of Visual Arts & Design, did some painstaking research and found that it began with teachers who took risks in their own work and pushed their students to consider doing the same. “Laying the Foundation: UNT Art Faculty, 1890-1970” is a collection of art by the men and women who broke ground artistically while being more than 3,000 miles from New York City and more than 2,000 miles from Los Angeles. “I have wanted to do something like this for a very long time,” Davis said, who served several years as the dean of the program. “All of the years I was involved in administration in the arts program, I recognized that we had a rich legacy. We wouldn’t be where we are today had we not had these faculty members building the program.” The exhibit opens Friday at UNT on the Square, 109 N. Elm St. Visitors will see art created as early as 1901. Davis said the Industrial Revolution brought a wave of appreciation for art as an arm of engineering, and universities all over the country responded by starting drawing classes to train students to apply their skills to an increasingly mechanical marketplace. Holiday songs from cathedrals of old UNT puts together its own show of Christmas music

Just days before the Denton Bach Society performs a concert of Christmastime early music, the University of North Texas Baroque Orchestra and Collegium Singers perform a concert of rarely heard Christmas music of the Middle Ages to the high baroque era. “Per la Notte di Natale” will include vocal and instrumental Christmas music performed on 17 types of early music instruments. Paul Leenhouts directs the orchestra, and Richard Sparks

directs the singers. The two groups will be joined by the UNT Gamba Consort, a group of baroque strings, the UNT Baroque Trumpet Ensemble and the UNT Sackbut Ensemble, a group of Renaissance trombones. Faculty members Jesse Eschbach and Jaymee Haefner will perform on organ and harp, respectively. The program spans from the sixth to 18th centuries, with music by William Byrd, Michael Praetorius, Johann David Heinichen and more. The concert replicates Christmas music heard in some of the oldest cathedrals in Europe. The concert will also include antiphonal brass in the balcony of

Winspear Performance Hall, and the pipe organ. The concert is 8 p.m. Friday. Pre-concert music will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Murchison Performing Arts Center. Patrons who plan to burn the retinas with nightmarish knits should also bring: some pocket change for the evening’s collection for Invisible Children, a nonprofit organization that works to free the child soldiers of Africa; and a specially-burned CD of random favorite songs for a gift exchange. Beer and mixed drinks will pair with Christmas cupcakes, cookies and (for designated drivers, perhaps?) hot chocolate. The live music for the evening will mix the noisepop, psychedelic sounds of Final Club, the bluesy, soul leanings of Terrestrials and the hard-edge alt rock of Bad Design. Phones stay on T here won’t be any preshow admonitions to silence cellphones at upcoming performances of American Roulette, opening today at Texas Woman’s University. TWU graduate student and Sundown Collaborative Theatre regular Zane Harris wrote the play, which follows a woman who tries to unravel the knotted threads of her sexuality. The setting? Harris bills it as “the dystopia of the modern American Dream.” In other words, expect some familiar fears from an America shaking off the recession and credit crisis only to find itself in a sort of emotional wasteland where class and the lure of wealth have turned out to be a sham. Harris used film, social media and music along with traditional staging. This is where those much-maligned cellphones come in. In American Roulette, Harris invites the audience to interact with the show, using their smartphones to visit websites

Gift For Emma has a dash of everything. A dancing octopus named Olive. A robot doll who comes to life to pop-and-lock to

hip-hop music. G.I. Joe troops marching and even taking cover.

Dancers Katie Martin and Brandon McGee perform in A Gift for Emma.

The holiday fantasy borrows bits and pieces of the beloved Christmastime ballet The Nutcracker and puts it into a setting that feels inspired by everything from Disney to Xbox video games. Denton City Contemporary Ballet took the 2010 holiday off to prepare for a trip to Austria, where it was one of a small selection of young dance companies to join Young! Tanzsommer 2011, a summer dance festival. This year, the contemporary ballet company brings back A Gift For Emma, a holiday fantasia in dance that follows a street urchin, Emma, into an empty dance studio for a warm winter nap. Like the Nutcracker’s Clara, Emma falls asleep under the tree and visits fanciful places to meet a cavalcade of interesting creatures. Artistic Director Lisa Racina has lead students mostly from her studio, Denton Dance Conservatory. See EMMA on 10

A queen in peril oprano Renee Fleming is pictured here in George Frideric Handel’s Rodelinda in 2004 opposite David Daniels as Bertarido. Fleming reprises the title role in the Metropolitan Opera’s live, high-definition broadcast of the opera this weekend at theaters nationwide. Fleming plays a queen who must fight treacherous enemies to keep her son safe and the memory of her exiled husband alive. An all-star supporting cast includes two of the world’s most prominent countertenors, Andreas Scholl and Iestyn Davies, as the exiled king Bertarido and his friend Unulfo. The broadcast will play locally at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Cinemark Denton, 2825 Wind River Lane. — Lucinda Breeding

Emma Racina has watched both guest artists and her own students mature into the title role in a dance that asks students to perform in classical and contemporary ballet, jazz, hiphop and modern dance expressions. The narrative — which takes Emma from the studio to the Arctic and under the sea — demonstrates the different styles taught by the conservatory’s faculty. The music is as varied as the dance styles. Like the local production of The Nutcracker, Emma boasts a huge cast. More than 200 dancers — students and profes-

sionals — perform. The youngest are about 4 years old. This year, the dance will include dancing toys, butterflies, spiders, mermaids and jellyfish, and two casts will perform the show. The company made one major change this year: It relocated the performances from a local university auditorium to the Krum High School Performance Center, 811 E. McCart St. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.

OPENING THIS WEEK

Samantha Binns and Juliana Baird perform as candy canes in A Gift for Emma.

House of Boys A gay teen (Layke Anderson) runs away to Amsterdam and finds a home and a lover (Benjamin Northover) at an all-male cabaret. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. Not rated, 117 minutes. Young Goethe in Love (###) In 1770s Germany, young Johann Goethe (Alexander Fehling), like William Shakespeare before him, falls in love but finds obstacles in his way to happiness, mainly that his love’s father has promised her to Goethe’s boss. Director Phillip Stolzl renders an entertaining mix of romance, tragedy and drama about the future author of Faust. Not rated, 102 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen

NOW PLAYING Arthur Christmas (###1/2) This pleasant holiday treat from Aardman, the British animation outfit behind Chicken Run and the Wallace and Gromit cartoons, has the old-fashioned spirit of Christmas at heart, spinning a snowflake-light tale with warmth, energy and goofy humor. The movie unveils the vast high-tech enterprise run by Santa to deliver all those presents as his big-hearted but bumbling younger son, Arthur (voiced by James McAvoy), races to deliver a single gift that fell through the cracks. The delightful, drolly funny voice cast includes Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Hugh Laurie, Imelda Staunton and Ashley Jensen. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — The Associated Press Courageous Dedicated law-enforcement officers vow to become better fathers and renew their faith after a tragedy in their community. With Ken Bevel, Kevin Downes, Ben Davies and T.C. Stallings. Rated PG-13, 129 minutes. — Los Angeles Times The Descendants (####) George Clooney stars in director Alexander Payne's film about a rich Hawaiian whose wife lies in a coma while he must deal with dispersing huge land holdings for his extended family. His two young daughters resent him, causing greater obstacles for him as he tries to hold the family together. Payne deftly portrays a man under fire trying to act gracefully. Rated R,

115 minutes. — B.A. Happy Feet Two (###1/2) The dancing, singing penguins are as adorable as ever. Yet a couple of shrimplike krill almost steal the show in this animated sequel that sticks to the formula of the original while adding enough variety to give it a life of its own. It helps to have Brad Pitt and Matt Damon voicing the krill with great companionability as they join a vocal cast that includes returning stars Elijah Wood and Robin Williams. Wood’s tap-dancing penguin now is a dad dealing with a misfit, runaway son embarrassed over his own lack of rhythm.
