‘Belles’ pokes fun at Christmas pageant politics
Denton Community Theatre’s Christmas Belles is full of West Texas types: from left, Honey Rae Futrelle (Amber Bryant), Reynerd Chisum (Jack Nance Garner), Rhonda Lynn Lampley (Susanne Coffey) and Dub Dubberly (Paul Miller).

irector Betty Kay Seibt can put Denton Community Theatre’s holiday comedy, Christmas Belles, in one neatly wrapped box. “This show is like The Daughters of the Lone Star State do The Best Christmas Pageant Ever in [Greater] Tuna,” said Seibt, who shares directing duties with Bonnie McCormick. Seibt’s description is apt for this Texas twist on the nightbefore-Christmas romp, written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. We find three sisters in Pharoah, Texas, in a royal mess. The three Futrelle sisters — Honey Rae (Amber Bryant), Twink (Leigh Ann Stadt) and Frankie (Michelle Rose) — are up to their armpits in church politics and family dysfunction as they work to make Honey Rae’s Christmas pageant the best ever staged at the Tabernacle of the Lamb. Honey Rae wants the pageant to be worthy of Broadway, but the recently demoted Geneva Musgrave (Jo Anne Cassell) keeps meddling and Rhonda Lynn Lampley (Susanne Coffey) is too helpful for Honey Rae’s tastes. And everyone’s personal problems threaten to surface before Jesus makes it to the manger. In the style of Greater Tuna, town secrets are spilled and family ties are tested while

every West Texas stereotype is milked for comic effect. Honey Rae has dated too many men in Pharoah. Twink is in jail for setting fire to her cheating man’s NASCAR treasures and burning down the trailer park. Frank is pregnant at 40-something with her second set of twins, and her husband Dub

can’t help because he’s got a kidney stone that’s bigger than his heart. “It’s easy to go too far in that direction,” Leigh Ann Stadt said of the animated antics outlined in the script. “The way this script is written and the things that happen, it’s not too hard to go too far. But everyone has moments that I think are very real.” Stadt gets to romance her real-life husband, Rob, who plays the sheriff. He agreed that the cast has to make balance a part of their character development. “Everyone in the audience knows some one in this story, so we can’t make too much fun of them,” he said. “If they don’t
know one of these characters, then they are one of them.” Seibt said the script does bank on familiar themes and characters. From Pharoah’s well-heeled dragon lady Patsy Price (Judi Conger) to the town’s simpleton (Jack Nance Garner) to the last-minute frenzy to make Christmas joyful, Christmas Belles shows a season overcome by too many expectations. “I think it goes back to the idea that we’ve all tried too hard,” Seibt said. “We’ve all tried to make the holidays match up to this picture that we think other people want it to be. It’s just fun.” — Lucinda Breeding

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
n Friday, the kids at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio are going to party like it’s 2012. “Dead Week Print Show” is the final bash of the year for Gutterth, a local record label and production company. Brent Frishman, a head honcho at Gutterth, said the “Dead Week Print Show” is one of the group’s biggest shows of the year. This show is a joint event with Meme Gallery, an on-site visual arts venue at Rubber Gloves, and includes a concert by one-man electronica outlets Datahowler (Ross Edman), Botany (Spencer Stephenson), Summer of Glaciers (Ryan Wasterlain) and Juve (Denton’s Aaron Mollet). Pan-Ector Industries, a popular and young screen-printing outfit in Denton, will join student printmakers to mount an exhibition and sale of art prints. “It’s technically our last show of the year,” Frishman
said. “This is the last time a lot of people have to go out and have a good time after dead week and finals. Actually, they are some of our biggest and most successful shows. The kids have had a week of studying. “It’s more than just a night at the bar and it’s more than just a show. To me, it’s like the concert is art in itself. We do projections — it changes the space. It’s not just another show.” Frishman said the music might be a lineup of solo electronic acts, but that doesn’t mean patrons can expect four sets of trance-y music percolating. “It started with Summer of Glaciers,” Frishman said. “We booked him a while ago. He does some really cool stuff, doing loop stuff, and the guitar work he puts with it is really good.” Summer of Glaciers played this year’s 35 Conferette — now 35 Denton. “We [Gutterth] just recently did a Violitionist set with

Botany,” Frishman said, referring the abbreviated Web concerts Gutterth posts of local groups and groups coming through Denton. “That’s when I realized those two acts, Botany and Summer of Glaciers, needed to be on a bill. That was kind of the catalyst. John Gilespie [of Denton’s Bad Design], my roommate, and I were talking about cool, electronic kind of loopy acts we know of, and that’s how we came up with [recruiting] Datahowler.” Details: Doors open at 9 p.m. Friday, and music starts at 10 p.m. Cover is $3 for ages 21 and older, $5 for those younger than 21. OPENING THIS WEEK
The Interrupters (###1/2) Steve James (Hoop Dreams) and Alex Kotlowitz spent a year in Chicago’s most violent neighborhoods for this documentary centering on the Violence Interrupters, a group dedicated to the Promethean task of interacting with the community when violence threatens. The disturbing film is filled with a parade of memorable characters and a series of chilling moments. Not rated, 125 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen The Man Nobody Knew (###1/2) Carl Colby wrote and directed this compelling documentary about his enigmatic father, William Colby. The son examines how the one-time CIA chief, and longtime secretive governmental agent, was as strange and aloof to his family as he was to the public. Using interviews, home footage, and personal reminiscences, Colby fills in some of the gaps in his quixotic but entertaining quest. Not rated, 104 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — B.A. The Mill and the Cross (####) This visually stunning film from Lech Majewski moves slowly, a necessity in order to appreciate the varying tableaux created by Flemish Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel (Rutger Hauer) as he creates some of his masterpieces. The paintings actually come to life, as Bruegel moves among his family and a country beset with political problems. Majewski took more than three years to mix special effects, optics, and expert CGI to complement his exquisitely composed scenes. Not rated, 92 minutes. At the Inwood in Dallas. — B.A. New Year’s Eve (##) This is the second in a remarkably shallow series of holiday-themed, celebritystuffed confections. Garry Marshall (Valentine's Day) again directs a script by Katherine Fugate that weaves together a dozen or so plotlines that crisscross a holiday prone to sentimentalizing. Included here are first kisses, midnight rendezvous, dying fathers, newborn babies, husbands at war and trapped strangers. If there is some kind of world record for schmaltz, this may have set it. With Hilary Swank, Jon Bon Jovi, Katherine Heigl, Abigail Breslin, Sarah Jessica Parker,, Zac Efron, Jessica

Brandon (Michael Fassbender) eyes a woman across the subway car in the provocative Shame.
Passionless pursuit Actor’s daring portrayal wasted on empty ‘Shame’ By Boo Allen Film Critic

he emperor has no clothes and neither does Michael Fassbender in the provocative new Shame. The intrepid Irish-German actor bares all for his craft, reuniting with director Steve McQueen for another bravura exhibition, and we do mean exhibition, of Method acting.
Biel, Seth Meyers, Halle Berry and Robert De Niro. Rated PG-13, 117 minutes. — The Associated Press The Sitter An unlikely baby-sitter (Jonah Hill) takes three out-of-control kids on a wild adventure through the streets of New York City. Rated R, 81 minutes. — Los Angeles Times
NOW PLAYING Arthur Christmas (###1/2) This pleasant holiday treat from Aardman, the British animation out-
Fassbender previously teamed with McQueen for Hunger, losing a dangerous amount of weight to play Irish terrorist Bobby Sands, who died after a long hunger strike. In Shame, Fassbender plays sex-addicted Brandon, a New
York City resident who seems to possess the ability, or curse, to bed every woman he sees. His sexual obsession eventually takes over his life, damaging any chances he might have of a serious relationship and even jeopardizing his vaguely defined job. When his sister Sissy (Carey Mulligan) arrives for an unscheduled visit, his routine falters but never stops. McQueen deftly chronicles Brandon’s trysts, following him and watching him indulge in situations that may seem varied but end up looking the same. Once the director establishes
the main point, little is left to admire beyond Fassbender’s courage to abandon all for his art. As a result, Shame becomes little more than a soft-core porn film, albeit one with a fine main performance complemented by a ritzy, high-tone music score, complete with accompanying Bach. In other words, like the emperor’s clothes, not much is here.
fit behind Chicken Run and the Wallace and Gromit cartoons, has the old-fashioned spirit of Christmas at heart, spinning a snowflake-light tale with warmth, energy and goofy humor. The movie unveils the vast high-tech enterprise run by Santa to deliver all those presents as his big-hearted but bumbling younger son, Arthur (voiced by James McAvoy), races to deliver a single gift that fell through the cracks. The delightful, drolly funny voice cast includes Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Hugh Laurie, Imelda Staunton and Ashley Jensen. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — AP
Hugo (####) Martin Scorsese uncharacteristically directs an elegiac, moving 3-D film about Hugo (Asa Butterfield), a boy hiding and living in a Paris train station around 1930. He befriends a toy store owner (Ben Kingsley) who turns out to be George Melies, a forgotten silent film pioneer. Various other subplots from Brian Selznick’s novel play out with an excellent cast, and are complimented by stunning special effects in which 3-D is, for once, appropriate and put to positive use. Rated PG, 126 minutes. — B.A. The Muppets (###) In this new caper featuring Jim Henson’s lovable
creations, Amy Adams and Jason Segel give support as a couple who venture to Los Angeles and end up helping the Muppets save their old studio from a dastardly oilman (Chris Cooper). The film showcases the best of what always made the Muppets popular, along with an obvious plea to attract a new generation. Rated PG, 98 minutes. — B.A. Puss in Boots (####) A spinoff of the Shrek franchise, this is actually a prequel, providing the origin story of the diminutive, swashbuckling kitty voiced with great charisma, as always, by Antonio Banderas. In 3-D. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — AP
Shame Rated NC-17, 101 minutes. Opens Friday at the Angelika Dallas.

ugh Nini’s goal is to exceed the previous year’s performance of The Nutcracker. This year marks the 23rd that the Festival Ballet of North Central Texas will produce the holiday classic. Nini, the artistic director of the company, praised two new faculty members for the new depth of some of the choreography. This year, Nini’s watched “the Russian variation” grow more authentic. (The variation is the famous part of the ballet when Clara and the Nutcracker Prince meet Russian dancers. Most audiences recall the male dancer’s high-energy solo, in which the dancer quickly — and, it appears, easily — moves from a deep, plie squat into a flying, straddle leap in mere seconds. The music from the variation is the most popular in radio and television advertisements. Eldar and Lilia Valiev joined Denton Ballet Academy in the summer. When they arrived, they brought years of rigorous training in the Vaganova ballet method and years of experience with the venerated Russian company Kirov. Nini met the couple through a guest teaching artist, Era Jouravlev, who visited Nini’s Denton studio in 2008. Eldar Valiev is Jouravlev’s brother. See NUTCRACKER on 10 iStock photo

“I knew Era had a brother, and I knew he danced and that his wife danced, too,” Nini said. He learned that the couple was coming through North Texas and arranged to meet them. It took just a conversation for the three to decide the Russian ballet dancers would join the studio. “Era told me he had welltrained students,” Eldar Valiev said. “She said he had strong, dedicated students. We found this was true.” “You can tell when you look at their faces that they are serious about ballet,” Lilia Valieva said. Nini has favored Russian ballet techniques over the Balanchine method taught by American schools. Nini said the Russian style, particularly the Vaganova method, insists on strong, healthy alignment — often called “placement” — in practice and performance. The feet, knees, hips, ribs and shoulders are building blocks of ballet articulation in Vaganova. “It’s interesting to me that a lot of American ballerinas are sometimes on their second and third set of hips before they retire,” Nini said. “Strong techniques protect the body, and there is a real difference between American and Russian training.” The Valievs said the Russian technique also produces poetic pictures on stage. The couple have known one another for 40 years. They both literally grew up in the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre, leaving their homes at age 10 and moving into the ballet school’s dormitories. They studied academics and dance in the school — and not just ballet. Eldar Valiev said he was determined to go, while Lilia was reluctant. “When I was just 10, I was captain of the hockey team,” Elda Valiev said. “I was very athletic, very energetic. There was a lady, a former character dancer who was there one day and she said, ‘Eldar, come here. I want you to audition for the St. Petersburg. I think you would be good in ballet.’” A character dancer is often a former principal ballet dancer

who performs featured roles. Drosslemeyer in The Nutcracker, the uncle who brings Clara the nutcracker doll, is a character role. In Cinderella, the ugly stepsisters are character roles. They require skills that merge dance and acting in a way principal ballet roles don’t. Eldar said he dreamed of going to St. Petersburg even as a child. He announced to his family that night that he would be leaving home to train for the ballet. “I told her I was going to the audition and would she come with me,” Eldar Valiev said. “Everyone around the table laughed.” He remembers the audition as being a simple affair, where he was asked to run, jump and point his toes. He also recalls being auditioned for musicality — how readily he discovered and moved to the rhythm and changed in rhythm in music. He was accepted. “One evening changed my life,” he said. “The day I leave, I woke up my mother and said ‘Hurry! Put my things in the bag! I’m ready!’” Lilia Valieva was in a summer camp when someone from the ballet came to watch her in a gymnastics session. The visitor look at how she extended her legs, at her jumps and more. They gave her a letter about official auditions, but she said she didn’t show it to anyone. The school sent a letter to her home, though. “I didn’t want to go to St. Petersburg,” she said. “I didn’t know anything about this ballet. I begged my mom not to

Eldar and Lilia Valiev, pictured here in a classical ballet with Russia’s Kirov ballet company, are new faculty members at Denton Ballet Academy, which trains students for the annual production of The Nutcracker by the Festival Ballet of North Central Texas.
GUEST DANCERS Returning guests are professional dancers Krisztina Pazar and Levente Bajari, formerly of the Hungarian National Ballet, and who were just featured as models in a four-page fashion spread in the Hungarian Elle Magazine. Dancer Andras Szego will perform his first Harlequin role, and will repeat his role from last year as Rose King with former Denton Ballet Academy student Natalia Wodnicka, now a New York resident.
send me.” It was in school that she learned to love ballet. It didn’t hurt that she was born with ballet conformation. Valieva has naturally hyperextended knees, a physical trait that creates a concave line from hip to ankle when the leg is extended. En pointe, ballerinas with hyperextended knees can appear to make the legs bend backward. The couple both entered the Kirov, where they danced solo and principal roles. As teach-
ers, they’ve traveled to Tennessee, South Carolina, Iceland and now, Texas. Nini and the Valievs said they hope the dancers will teach at the Denton academy for a long time to come. In the classroom, Lilia Valieva teaches beginning ballet, tap and jazz to students as young as 2 and a half. Eldar Valiev teaches intermediate courses and character classes as well as working with boys, who have to build flexibility, technique and strength to prepare for performances. “I am thinking that, when I was a student as a little girl, the ballet classes seemed so long. They were two hours, and it was really hard work,” Lilia Valieva said. “For my students here, I want them to learn patience. It’s hard to keep students’ focusing on class. I think if I teach patience, and practice, practice, practice, when they grow up, they will be using that in dance and in life.” The Valievs have worked with Nini to set new choreography for the Russian variation of The Nutcracker. Nini said he
hopes audiences will notice the changes — the choreography and the new Russian costumes for the dancers performing the variation. Nini said he looks forward to watching Denton students learn the methods imported with the Valievs. “This is a very scientific, very organized, very healthy way to dance if you ask me,” he said. “I think what they can offer my students is the experience on the artistry. The Russian school is absolutely famous for coordinating the whole body. I think what they’re bringing to the studio is something that has been overlooked in the rest of the country: the variations, the character dance and the variations. American students go away to summer programs. They do five character classes and then never see it again.” Eldar Valiev said the most fortunate students will be those who are able to embody the magic of ballet, the alchemy of technique and a interpretation. “It’s technical, it’s acting, it’s artistry. It’s a big responsibility,” he said. “When you are in front of 2,000 people, who cares if you don’t like the way the costume is doing this? Who cares if you don’t feel like putting your heart in front of them. You do it because it is your responsibility. And when you do it, you have no regrets.” The production includes of cast of 180 and is produced with the help of 80 volunteers. Just before the ballet begins, Nini addresses the cast with a pep talk. “I tell them to remember that on stage we’re here to tell a story. Remember what the story is and make sure that you’re communicating it to the audience,” he said. “As a director, for me, it’s all about the group coming together, from different ballet schools, different cities, even different countries, to breathe life into a ballet that can become routine if it’s allowed to. I want it to look fresh. If it looks fresh, then I think we will have honored a long standing tradition that every year is better than the one before.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877.
