enton Community Theatre closes its holiday comedy Christmas Belles this weekend. Co-directors Betty Kay Seibt and Bonnie McCormick have led a cast of familiar faces through the sorts of paces normally used in the likes of Greater Tuna. The Christmas romp — written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten — finds three sisters in a royal mess in small-town Fayro, Texas. Honey Raye wants the pageant to be worthy of Broadway, but the recently demoted Geneva (Jo Anne Cassell) keeps meddling and Rhonda Lynn (Susanne Coffey) is too helpful for Honey Raye’s tastes. Most of those songs are sad. Ely was forging his identity as a musician in the wake of Beatlemania and as groups like the Rolling Stones were recording and performing some of their most influential albums. Ely released an album, Satisfied at Last, in June, and the music is more rock, and the lyrics more urgent. His “Mockingbird Hill” (not to be confused with Vaughn Horton’s song) is styled like a hymn, but perhaps performed beyond the walls of any church.

or voltREvolt, a demo recording stretches out to full album length. The Denton five-piece laid down 12 tracks, with “Icarus” passing the seven-minute mark and “The Limelight” lasting more than 10 minutes. “VoltREvolt is really all about community, getting people involved with our ideas and causes,” said lead singer and guitarist Matthew Long. The demo is a mellow affair, with songs like “Bobby” sounding a little like alt-rock cast as shoegaze — though the lyrics are clear instead of muddled by the wall of guitar sounds. When the band gets around to “About the World,” it’s all indie folk embroidered with a lone horn as the drums and guitar froth up in a crest of energy. “Hey, hey-o,” Long sings in a campfire-worthy tune, “are you troubled about the world?” “It’s Hard to Be Happy” sees the group employing an earnest harmonica and Woody Guthrie-style verses. Long said voltREvolt basically tries to achieve a kind of worship when it performs. With the demo for an example, the statement makes sense. The music begins with celebration, moves through introspec-
tion, then communion and, finally, a benediction with “When the Blues.” “In visual art, I love the contour and the line. I don’t do the blurry stuff,” Long said. “If you listen to people anymore, all you hear are people disagreeing. What we’re trying to do with our music is find the common ground we all share.” Long said the band writes music that tries to explore

beauty, truth and, when possible, transcend it. “Ideals like peace, love and joy, they’re almost inexhaustible,” he said. “Take Woody Guthrie’s ‘This Land is Your Land.’ Everyone loves that song. If you find anything in that song to oppose, then you’re one of those people who counters everything you’ve ever known just to do it. And I’m not OK with having that person on our team.” VoltREvolt is working on its debut album, recording in a studio belonging to Denton’s Midlake. Long said he expects the album to be finished in McKinney.

Emmeline broadens sound
S
inger-songwriter Emmeline Miles wanted to take more risks in the follow-up to her 2010 EP Early Morning Hours. With determination and the counsel of engineer-producer Martin Baird, Miles — who goes by just Emmeline onstage — said she did just that. “I think that the way it came together was kind of surprising,” the Dallas-based performer said. “Early Morning Hours was a very acoustic. I knew when I went into the studio this time, I wanted this record to be orchestrally a lot bigger. I was able to use more instruments, and play around with arrangements and vocal harmonies. I’ve been playing these songs for about a year — and I’m having to make some decisions about how to put some of that sound from the different instruments on the record when I play them live.” Miles met Baird
TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
when he came to a show she was part of, and the two dreamed aloud about what they’d try to do in the studio. Then, they went into the studio to produce the record. They came out with Someone to Be, a seven-track album that finds Miles back at the piano, using music to make sense of a world beset by recession and democratic uprisings in the Middle East, and just about everything in between. Two songs have been ripening: Miles penned “Bad Day” when she was just 16, and “Dallas” hatched after college graduation meant Miles would migrate from Los Angeles back home to Dallas. The remaining five songs are proof that Miles got somewhere with her risks. “All the Reasons Why” blends the musical theater of Jonathan Larson (Rent) with a love letter of sorts begging a friend not to give up. “Bad Day” is a garden variety pop tune propelled along by up-tempo drumming. “Mine” is straight-up indie with a twist of cabaret. Baird was a key player in Miles
making the record she wanted. “His enthusiasm for the music really impressed me,” she said. “We have the same sense of humor and we really clicked. He likes to let artists follow their heart, which I really appreciate. Something that I really enjoy about working with Martin is that we’re both really honest people. We were working on harmonies and he’d say ‘I like that’ and ‘No, I don’t like that.’ I know I’d send him some vocal harmonies and he’d say ‘Yeah, I like this, but it needs a little something.’ I think he adds a lot of twists and turns.” Miles started playing one night a month at Cafe Du Luxe when her friend and peer Karyna Cruz asked her to perform at the cafe in her place. “The music scene in Denton and Dallas are really entwined,” Miles said. “I play Denton a lot, and I love it.” Miles plays a CD release party at Cafe du Luxe on Saturday night. Patrick Wilson is the one who got away from a novelist played by Charlize Theron in Young Adult.
Arrested development Theron excels as juvenile delinquent in ‘Young Adult’ he Young Adult in Jason Reitman’s new comedydrama is an awful person. She lies, she schemes, she manipulates and she drinks so much she starts every day face down. And she is totally fascinating. Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, who has come to a crossroads in her life. Her decisions about her future propel the film’s involving drama, while also providing heaps of black humor. Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno) proves she’s not a one-hit wonder with
her exceptionally mordant script. It gives director Reitman plenty of material with which to draw a finely nuanced portrait of a severely troubled woman. Mavis writes children’s books, but her latest contract draws to a close and she must decide what to do next with her dead-end life. She leaves her cramped Minneapolis apartment, takes her tiny neglected dog, and returns to her small hometown of Mercury, Minn. There, she plans on forcing a reconciliation with her ex-
boyfriend Buddy Slade (Patrick Wilson), despite his being happily married and the father of a newborn daughter. Mavis knows her beauty could entice most men, so she sets out for a full makeover before then ingratiating herself to the point that Buddy will again fall for her. Her brazen attempts reach Iago-levels of two-faced mendacity. Cody’s script excels in providing Mavis with her scathing, character-defining dialogue, as well as her atrocious but believable behavior. Mavis somehow falls in league with Matt (Patton Oswalt), the voice of reason and a forgotten former high school classmate who reprimands her for her actions. But he also revels in watching the building crisis. Through Matt, Mavis’ true deceitfulness

And despite the insidiousness of her prior behavior, the train wreck is still painful to watch. Theron may have nabbed another Oscar nomination for her ability, in this one scene, to elicit viewer emotions while also revealing her character’s total depravity. Young Adult becomes a comedy filled with the pathos that is often hard to face. Several scenes might not ring entirely true or credible, but, in all, the film delivers a well-rounded package.

t won’t have the stunning visuals of The Nutcracker or the plucky attitude of A Gift for Emma, but choreographer Lily Sloan said Homing Where I Roam is a collection of dances inspired by the winter holidays. Except the holidays in the three modern dances by Denton’s Big Rig Dance Collective will be rooted in reality. No sugarplum fairies will pirouette. No swing-dancing elves will turn a studio into a wonderland. In Homing Where I Roam, dancers will deal with the trappings and trimmings of the holidays in the here and now. “Last December, I was like, ‘I need to make a new work,’” said Sloan, sharing a table in the far corner of Banter with fellow choreographers Amanda Jackson, Crysta Caulkins-Clouse and Whitney Boomer. Jackson and Boomer are completing their MFA degrees at Texas Woman’s University. Sloan and CaulkinsClouse are TWU graduates. “When I was thinking about needing a new project, I started thinking about the holidays. How they feel, how they look and how, sometimes, the holidays don’t feel or look the way you think they’re supposed to.” Sloan said she kept returning to what became the central theme: home. And why shouldn’t home become an emotional foundation for the holidays? Many — if not most — Americans develop their understanding of Christmas and the winter holidays at home. See BIG RIG on 10

Big Rig Then Sloan talked to her fellow Big Rig dancers and found that the idea of home was fascinating to them, too. Then the dancers realized they’d be building dances that would ultimately be performed in a space far smaller than Margo Jones Performing Arts Center at TWU or a local high school auditorium. “A while back I just decided to rent the [PointBank] Black Box [Performing Arts Center, a small venue run by Denton Community Theatre]. Once I did that, I figured we wouldn’t be creating some huge, 10dance event. And I was just trusting that we’d have a dance.” Big Rig will perform three dances in the intimate black box theater, where people sitting the farthest from the stage are still so close they can see the dancer’s perspiration. Caulkins-Clouse said each dance is the result of staging movements often done on a large space in a small one. “That’s what happens when we talk about dance,” she said. “That’s what we talk about, the associations we have with the idea of home. How do we twist this idea, and does it have to be in a huge arena? We talk a lot about how we’ll move and be in whatever space we perform in.” Sloan calls it “site-specific” dance, an academic term for putting dance in a space chosen for a particular reason — in a local yogurt shop or on the lawn of the historic downtown courthouse — and making the dance fit the place. “Putting dance out there,” as Jackson said, is central to Big Rig’s mission. A small percentage of people will drive to Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth to watch Texas Ballet Theater perform. Hundreds — maybe even thousands — of people visit the Square on a weekend, and Boomer said a lot of people will stop to watch a dance that looks spontaneous. Caulkins-Clouse’s dance might feel the most overtly related to home. She’ll perform a short solo piece while cooking. “I’m making a dance about who I am, and about who I am

HOMING WHERE I ROAM What: a twist on holiday dance by the Big Rig Dance Collective When: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday Where: PointBank Black Box Performing Arts Center, 318 E. Hickory St. Details: Tickets cost $10 at www.bigrigdance.org/BRDC/ Projects.html or $15 at the door.
at home,” she said. “When I started working on it, my mind immediately went to this idea of biography. Because people are putting more of their lives out in public than ever; people are blogging, sharing their lives through social media. I started thinking about, you know, what’s my story? What’s my story of being in the real world, my story as a wife, as a person who just bought a house, a person who just graduated?” Jackson and Boomer will perform part of a curious project, titled “Homemade Dance,” that they just produced in a vacant house owned by Denton city councilman Kevin Roden. The audience was led from room to room, from downstairs to upstairs, to watch dancers create both dance and a feeling in each room. In the kitchen, two dancers moved automatically, clock-like, around a table while a musician sat in the pantry, tuning a small radio. A solitary dancer quizzed patrons about their favorite books as a child, and when a woman cited A Wrinkle In Time, the dancer seemed to fall apart emotionally, thrashing books from the shelves and losing her composure. Finally, the audience watched a 15-minute modern ballet of candid movement and intentions that related directly to the security and dysfunction of home. There were creepy moments when dancers stood outside rooms, becoming shadowy figures peeping into a bedroom. The music was ambient — clicking, ringing and rustling sounds that suggest bodies moving in other rooms or a room settling after water

“I’m making a dance about who I am, and about who I am at home.” — Crysta Caulkins-Clouse, Big Rig Dance Collective choreographer rushes through pipes. “For Whitney and I, the question is how to rule this challenge. We perform in a house, in a very small space, and then we move to the Black Box, which is an entirely different place with a different feeling,” Jackson said. “I also feel that, as a performer, we’re so ingrained in the space, and then having to turn around and do it in a totally different place, well, we’re both accepting this idea of change,” Boomer said. Sloan said her dance is rooted in the idea of home, and how relationships grow out of it. Her
piece uses nostalgia — and some holiday decorations here and there — to tell a story of family situations. She didn’t require the dancers in the piece to play characters, but they do explore the connections that emerge in a space made to feel like home. “Some of it is really abstraction, but there are these familial situations that play out like a story,” she said. “We all embrace improvisation as choreographers. It’s like we’ve all gone on this long journey, and it’s like I don’t know exactly how we got here, but we’re here together.” Audiences will see some angles and patterns, and they’ll see relationships played out as they emerge in houses, apartments and dorms. The way bodies move at home are replete with subconscious assumptions and conscious questions and yearnings. “We all want to see what happens when we put all these ideas together,” Boomer said. perspective angle with the side journey of those tiny krill trying to find their place in a world of bigger, hungrier things. Rated PG, 99 minutes. — AP Hugo (####) Martin Scorsese uncharacteristically directs an elegiac, moving 3-D film about Hugo (Asa Butterfield), a boy hiding and living in a Paris train station around 1930. He befriends a toy store owner (Ben Kingsley) who turns out to be George Melies, a forgotten silent film pioneer. Various other subplots from Brian Selznick’s novel play out with an excellent cast, and are complemented by stunning special effects in which 3-D is, for once, appropriate and put to positive use. Rated PG, 126 minutes. — B.A. The Muppets (###) In this new caper featuring Jim Henson’s lovable creations, Amy Adams and Jason Segel give support as a couple who venture to Los Angeles and end up helping the Muppets save their old studio from a dastardly oilman (Chris Cooper). The film showcases the best of what always made the Muppets popular, along with an obvious plea to attract a new generation. Rated PG, 98 minutes. — B.A. New Year’s Eve (##) This is the second in a remarkably shallow series of holiday-themed, celebrity-stuffed confections. Garry Marshall (Valentine's Day) again directs a script by Katherine Fugate that weaves together a dozen or so plotlines that crisscross a holiday prone to sentimentalizing. Included here are first kisses, midnight rendezvous, dying fathers, newborn babies, husbands at war and trapped strangers. If there is some kind of world record for schmaltz, this may have set it. With Hilary Swank, Jon Bon Jovi, Katherine Heigl, Abigail Breslin, Sarah Jessica Parker, Zac Efron, Jessica Biel, Seth Meyers, Halle Berry and Robert De Niro. Rated PG-13, 117 minutes. — AP Puss in Boots (####) A spinoff of the Shrek franchise, this is actually a prequel, providing the origin story of the diminutive, swashbuckling kitty voiced with great charisma, as always, by Antonio Banderas. At the film’s start, Puss is an outlaw in his small, Spanish hometown. Flashbacks take us to his childhood at an orphanage, where he was best friends with a brainy, ambitious Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). Now, Humpty’s partner in crime is the dangerous master thief Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). Quick, lively, family entertainment. In 3-D. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — AP The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 (#1/2) Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and her vampire beau, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), marry in a lavish, romantic outdoor ceremony. Bella’s childhood best friend and the other man in the equation, werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), stops by as a gesture of goodwill. Edward impregnates Bella on the honeymoon and the resulting hybrid spawn threatens to destroy her from inside. Rated PG13, 117 minutes. — AP
