The Pokemon Company International presents the city championship of the Pokemon trading card game Tuesday at Madness Comics & Games in Denton. Players use the Pokemon characters represented on each card to “fight” an opponent’s character.

okemon Trading Card devotees can test their skills at Madness Comics & Games on Tuesday. The winner will be named the city champion and will get an invitation to the Pokemon World Championships in Hawaii next August. Pokemon is a popular video game and anime cartoon series from Japan. The phenomenon stems from the popular Asian pastime of insect collecting. In the cartoon series, a group of young people — led by a boy named Ash Ketchum, a Pokemon master-in-training — use “pocket monsters” to battle the pocket monsters of villains. Ash’s prize Pokemon, Pikachu, a grinning, chubby yellow creature, became the avatar of the phenomenon after the series first aired in the 1990s.

Orbison’s torch, mixing rock, folk, blues and country in a distinctive cocktail that is deeply sad — even when it means to be light. Lovers of Tom Waits’ gravelly voice will find Graham a cousin, vocally, with a few rocks less rattling around his pipes. Best and Becker are good bill mates for Graham. Best shreds a fair bit harder, and sings with more fever, and Becker brings enough soul to leaven what’s sure to be an evening that will lay hot rubber on the bar floor. And maybe, if you’re nice, Graham will anoint hopeless Scrooges with a rendition of “I Hate Christmas.” I Newcomer Earl E. Well, a T. rex would probably chase you and try to eat you.” In the end, the Tyrannosaurus rex’s head popped up out of a book from Reinhart and Sabuda’s Encyclopedia Prehistorica series. You don’t start out with a sketch of what you want to do.” Concept becomes motion — cutting out paper, folding it and studying how the object will literally unfold as the reader turns the page. “After the manuscript is written, you start thinking about what you want to do,” Reinhart

dead ends. It’s an awkward partnership, and not just because Salander has a face full of piercings, a jarring haircut, a thousand-yard stare and nothing but loathing for her her fellow humans. It’s because Henrik hired her to investigate Blomkvist first. The declining Swede wanted a keen investigator with noble morals to find his Harriet. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a solid film with star turns by its A-list cast and the compelling Mara, who plays the title role with a feral ferocity that should position her for super stardom, and guarantee her as heir apparent to Angelina Jolie as the go-to gal when a movie calls for a badass heroine. Before the hacker and journalist team up, Fincher weaves Salander’s story into the mystery. Her blank stare hides a childhood filled with violence, and when her trusted case worker is sidelined by a stroke, she is suddenly at the whim of oily guardian Bjurman (Yorick von Wageningen). Bjurman abuses his power over her with nary a hint of remorse, and his scenes with the friendless Lisbeth make your skin crawl. When Salander exacts her quid pro quo revenge, her style of justice is as unsettling as it is poetic. By the time Blomkvist has proof that the Vanger clan is up to its Nazi epaulets in moral repugnance, the climax comes like a land mine. In the end, the film answers the pricking question of Lisbeth Salander’s allure. She’s not entirely sympathetic and almost hard to like. But as the mystery is solved, a trail of broken, female bodies — and Salander’s battered one — seem to cry out for salvation. It’s Salander who can deliver. Unlike most women in films of this nature, this heroine never runs away from the monsters. And she never falls down.

he 99-percenters don’t need to start an Occupy North Pole movement over Arthur Christmas, the animated comedy that shows how Santa Claus manages to deliver all those presents in a modern global market. This animated holiday treat from Aardman (Chicken Run) has the old-fashioned spirit of Christmas at heart. The title character is a classic holiday misfit, a cousin to Rudolph or Hermey the Elf. The younger son of Santa Claus, Arthur (James McAvoy) desperately wants to contribute to the family business. The glory goes to his dad (Jim Broadbent), who has become a dotty figurehead as older, bolder son Steve (Hugh Laurie) mechanizes the sleighand-reindeer operation. Yet after a single present goes awry, leaving one little girl in Britain just hours away from awakening to a joyless Christmas, Steve shrugs it off as an acceptable rate of error. Arthur can’t stand the thought of a child missing out. So he and loopy Grandsanta (Bill Nighy), set off in the original reindeer-pulled sleigh, accompanied by eager giftwrapping elf Bryony (Ashley Jensen, copping a hilariously rippling Scottish accent). Arthur Christmas crams in more manic banter than viewers, particularly young children, can digest. Still, the visual gags will carry youngsters along, while there are plenty of clever wisecracks to keep their parents occupied.

oth eager to please and more than a little bit annoying, Steven Spielberg’s animated The Adventures of Tintin races from London to the Middle East, from the high seas to the open sky. Airplanes crash. Pirate ships capsize. A fat lady sings. Really. Based on the long-running series of comic books by the Belgian artist Herge, Tintin introduces us to the journalist Tintin (Jamie Bell) and his trusty dog, Snowy, who buy a model of a famed pirate ship at a street fair. The model, however, contains a secret scroll, which all manner of bad guys want to get their hands on, including Ivanovich Sakharine (Daniel Craig). Let the globetrotting chase begin. There is plenty to like here, especially the way Spielberg appropriates traditional liveaction filmmaking technique — the camera swinging through the air or breathlessly following after the performers — into his digitally generated wonderland. The central problem, though, is that Tintin is in such a rush to overwhelm the viewer that it never develops an emotional center. The gingerhaired, round-faced title character is a bit of a puzzle. And although the motion-capture images are warmer and more appealing than they have been in other films, the characters’ heads still look oddly proportioned and weirdly waxen. In the end, The Adventures of Tintin just finds a great director spinning his wheels ... and spinning ... and spinning ... .

anadian director David Cronenberg has dealt with a full menu of strange and unsavory characters in his distinguished career. But now, in A Dangerous Method, he examines a set of real-life people. And they are the strangest of them all. Michael Fassbender turns in a persuasive performance in a difficult role, that of pioneer psychoanalyst Carl Jung. Cronenberg focuses on the budding shrink in the early 1900s, first in Zurich and then later in Vienna, when Dr. Jung comes to consult with and be influenced by Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortenson). The two men stand at the beginning of their controversial work, as they now begin to take the first of their troubled patients. Jung accepts Sabina (Keira Knightley) as one of his first. Over the length of the movie, she responds to his dangerous methods, becomes his lover, and eventually recovers enough to also become a psychiatrist. Their relationship arc, reportedly true, makes fascinating material for cinematic analysis. Cronenberg follows Christopher Hampton’s play, which is adapted from John Kerr’s book. The roots show. Most of the interaction takes place in interiors, resulting in a steady claustrophobic feel. Narrow sets of two men talking help to bog the film down at several points with psycho-babble dialogue. But considering that Freud and Jung are the ones talking, their subject matter should be no surprise. The film benefits from fine performances, although some may cringe at Knightley’s Russian accent and over-thetop histrionics. Fassbender continues his impressive string of capturing tortured figures. — Boo Allen, staff film critic

ritish novelist John le Carre’s dense spy thriller makes a return film appearance. It respectfully follows the revered 1979 miniseries starring Alec Guiness as covert operative George Smiley. In this murky new affair, Gary Oldman plays Smiley, the mild-mannered secret agent who returns to Britain’s MI-6 division to help ferret out a double agent. This new production fluctuates much like the earlier version, conjuring up creeping levels of paranoia and mistrust, while also painting convincing character portraits of the people involved in spying. The production also takes advantage of an excellent British cast. But the narrative jumps around in time, turning and twisting constantly, much like the novel. The jerks in time happen so much and so often, the film often becomes hard to follow. After being forced to retire, Smiley returns when asked by Control (John Hurt) to investigate a possible infiltrator reporting back to the Russians. Smiley settles on an obvious group, made up of Colin Firth, Toby Jones and Ciaran Hinds. The likely suspects then fall under the greater scrutiny provided by Bridget O’Connor and Peter Straughan’s script, as interpreted by director Tomas Alfredson. The group lands in Smiley’s growing suspicions, as Alfredson flips among different times and characters, all while building up the condemning portrait of Smiley’s one true malefactor. This Tinker, Tailor firmly roots itself in psychological drama and avoids the temptation of ramping itself up for today’s action-oriented audiences with gun fights, car chases or explosions. As a result, it plods along, drawing its enticements more from the possible pitfalls awaiting a double agent than with any eventual shootout. — Boo Allen, staff film critic

The Artist (####) Near-silent, black-and-white film about a star of silent films (Jean Dujardin) who falls on hard times with the arrival of talkies. He once gave a helping hand to an unknown starlet (Berenice Bejo) who then helps him recover his life and career. Charming mix of comedy and pathos makes this one of the year's joys. And with the best ending of any film this year. Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — Boo Allen The Darkest Hour Young entrepreneurs Sean (Emile Hirsch) and Ben (Max Minghella) meet stranded travelers Natalie (Olivia Thirlby) and Anne (Rachael Taylor) at a hot Moscow nightclub. Their whole world changes in an instant when an alien attack devastates the city and everything goes dark. Joined by a Swedish businessman (Joel Kinnaman), the youths emerge from hiding days later and must somehow fight back against a nearly invisible enemy. Rated PG-13, 117 minutes. War Horse (##) Steven Spielberg's glossy rendition of a London play about a magnificent horse bought by a poor English farmer (Peter Mullan). The horse is raised lovingly by his son Albert (Jeremy Irvine) before they are both recruited for duty in World War I. The story travels through consecutive episodes with different owners and protectors of the horse, all the while being tracked by Albert. Overly maudlin yet handsome film never rises above the mundane. Rated PG-13, 146 minutes. — B.A. We Bought a Zoo (##) The father (Matt Damon) of a troubled family buys a troubled Los Angeles zoo. Together the zoo and family formulaically recover. And, of course, dad has a romance with one of the zoo workers (Scarlett Johansson). Sappy, imminently forgettable yet familyfriendly film from underachieving director Cameron Crowe. Well photographed by Rodrigo Prieto. Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A.

Stallings. Rated PG-13, 129 minutes. — LAT Happy Feet Two (###1/2) The dancing, singing penguins are as adorable as ever. Yet a couple of shrimplike krill almost steal the show in this animated sequel that sticks to the formula of the original while adding enough variety to give it a life of its own. It helps to have Brad Pitt and Matt Damon voicing the krill with great companionability as they join a vocal cast that includes returning stars Elijah Wood and Robin Williams. Wood’s tap-dancing penguin now is a dad dealing with a misfit, runaway son embarrassed over his own lack of rhythm. Director and co-writer George Miller, who handled the same chores on the 2006 Academy Award-winning first film, keeps the focus on penguins in peril while adding an interesting nature-inperspective angle with the side journey of those tiny krill trying to find their place in a world of bigger, hungrier things. Rated PG, 99 minutes. — The Associated Press Hugo (####) Martin Scorsese uncharacteristically directs an elegiac, moving 3-D film about Hugo (Asa Butterfield), a boy hiding and living in a Paris train station around 1930. He befriends a toy store owner (Ben Kingsley) who turns out to be George Melies, a forgotten silent film pioneer. Various other subplots from

Brian Selznick’s novel play out with an excellent cast, and are complimented by stunning special effects in which 3-D is, for once, appropriate and put to positive use. Rated PG, 126 minutes. — B.A. Immortals When a bloodthirsty, power-hungry king rampages across ancient Greece in search of a legendary weapon, a brave young stonemason assembles a band to stop him. With Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas and Freida Pinto. In 3-D. Rated R, 110 minutes. — LAT J. Edgar (###) Leonardo DiCaprio plays FBI founder and longtime head J. Edgar Hoover. Clint Eastwood directs this “best hits” version of Hoover's life, with only a glancing nod towards the more salacious aspects of Hoover’s private life. Naomi Watts plays Hoover’s longtime secretary and Armie Hammer portrays Hoover’s inseparable friend and colleague Clyde Tolson. Rated R, 137 minutes. — B.A. Jack and Jill A successful advertising executive with a beautiful wife and kids dreads the annual Thanksgiving visit of his passiveaggressive twin sister. With Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes and Al Pacino. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — LAT Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (###1/2) The Impossible Mission Force (Tom Cruise, Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg) finds itself abandoned just as they need to break into the Kremlin and, later, to scale the world’s tallest building in Dubai. This latest Impossible entry delivers on constant

action and white-knuckle sequences, all ably rendered by animation director Brad Bird (The Incredibles), who makes an impressive first effort with humans. See it in Imax for maximum effect. Rated PG-13, 133 minutes. — Boo Allen New Year’s Eve (##) This is the second in a remarkably shallow series of holiday-themed, celebritystuffed confections. Garry Marshall (Valentine's Day) again directs a script by Katherine Fugate that weaves together a dozen or so plotlines that crisscross a holiday prone to sentimentalizing. Included here are first kisses, midnight rendezvous, dying fathers, newborn babies, husbands at war and trapped strangers. If there is some kind of world record for schmaltz, this may have set it. Rated PG-13, 117 minutes. — AP Puss in Boots (####) A spinoff of the Shrek franchise, this is actually a prequel, providing the origin story of the diminutive, swashbuckling kitty voiced with great charisma, as always, by Antonio Banderas. At the film’s start, Puss is an outlaw in his small, Spanish hometown. Flashbacks take us to his childhood at an orphanage, where he was best friends with a brainy, ambitious Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). Now, Humpty’s partner in crime is the dangerous master thief Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). Quick, lively, family entertainment. In 3-D. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — AP Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows (##) Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law bicker and banter and

bob and weave with diminishing returns in this sequel to the 2009 smash hit Sherlock Holmes. Director Guy Ritchie once again applies his revisionist approach to Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic literary character, infusing the film with his trademark, hyperkinetic aesthetic and turning the renowned detective into a wisecracking butt-kicker. Here, Downey’s Holmes faces off against brilliant supervillain Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), who's cooked up a scheme to pit European nations against each other in hopes of benefiting from the demand for arms. Noomi Rapace tags along for some reason as a gypsy fortuneteller looking for her missing brother. Rated PG-13, 129 minutes. — AP The Sitter An unlikely baby-sitter (Jonah Hill) takes three out-of-control kids on a wild adventure through the streets of New York City. With Max Records, Ari Graynor, J.B. Smoove and Sam Rockwell. Rated R, 81 minutes. — LAT Tower Heist (###1/2) This is an ensemble, and a strong one at that, led by Ben Stiller, Alan Alda, Matthew Broderick, Casey Affleck and Tea Leoni. When financial guru Arthur Shaw (Alda) is charged with stealing billions from his investors — including the staff of his luxury high-rise — they come up with a plan to steal their money back. Brett Ratner’s blast of an action comedy truly brings out the best in Eddie Murphy, who’s fast-talking, flummoxed and full of false bravado as a low-level thief. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. — AP
