Michelle Parker and Gretchen Lof have big wins at Pima County Fairground HITS AZ Winter Festival Courtesy Horseinsport.com Tucson, AZ - March 11, 2011 - Competition at the HITS Arizona Winter Festival at the Pima County Fairgrounds in Tucson, Arizona was highlighted by big wins for Michelle Parker in the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, and Gretchen Lof in the $2,500 Devoucoux Hunter Prix. Maryland’s Ken Krome set a twisting course which had 16 efforts, including a triple combination and a liverpool mid-way through the track, with a time allowed of 90 seconds for Sunday’s $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. The first of the two clear rides came three trips in when Janine Weatherby of Bellevue, Nebraska rode flawlessly through the course aboard Laurel Lachowiez’s Allegro. Parker, who had two mounts in the class, followed immediately with a clean round aboard her own Lassila De Moyon to ensure a jump-off. The rest of the class was unable to follow suit, which kept it a head-to-head jump-off battle between Weatherby and Parker. Weatherby was first to go and set the Great American Time to Beat at 53.545seconds but had eight jumping faults, which enabled Parker to take a careful approach in the jump-off and score the win. USEF NSAID RULES CHANGE By Diana DeRosa (courtesy Dr. J. Hanover & KAM Animal Services) NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) may help mask lameness while reducing pain, swelling, and inflammation, but they can also be very harmful to the equine, whether pet or athlete. NSAIDs can contribute to GI ulcers, diarrhea from colitis and colic, which all may trigger bouts of laminitis. Even short term NSAID use has the potential for renal (kidney) and liver toxicity, and may decrease a horse’s health and performance. Research has shown that NSAIDs may also slow down the healing process of soft tissues. This means that the patient using NSAIDs may look normal and not have pain evident, but the tissue is weaker longer and at a higher risk for re-injury during the extended healing period. The USEF now requires an “NSAID Disclosure form” to be filed with the Steward/Technical Delegate if more than one NSAID is used during a competition or in the five days preceding a USEF competition. The use of Bute and Banamine together is currently prohibited. Starting December 1, 2011, the presence of only one NSAID will be allowed! The seven NSAIDs currently allowed with quantitative restrictions are Bute, Banamine, Naproxen, Ketofen, Arquel, Equioxx, and topical Surpass.

KAM Animal Services offers FRE Choice Liquid as a safe effective NSAID alternative. Big Win Continued Tucson but now calls San Marcos, California home. “Lassila de Moyon is a really nice horse. He’s a 12-year-old Selle Francais gelding that we’ve had for a year and a half. We just recently brought him up to the Grand Prix level. The funny thing about this week is that my boyfriend, Alex Alvarado, usually

shows him, but since a couple of my horses were feeling a little under the weather I ending up 'stealing' him for the weekend! We haven’t shown together that much because Alex usually rides him, but it worked out nicely.” Rounding out the top five were Bjorn Ikast in third aboard Brave Heart and fourth aboard Monte Cristo, while Parker finished fifth aboard her second mount Clever. Grand Prix action resumes on Sunday, March 13 at the HITS Arizona Winter Circuit with the final $25,000 Strongid C 2X Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, to close out the season in Tucson. GretchenLof_Dresden$2,500 Devoucoux Hunter Prix In Saturday’s $2,500 Devoucoux Hunter Prix, a qualifier for the all-new Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final, Gretchen Lof of Cave Creek, Arizona piloted her own Dresden to victory when she scored an 86 in the first round and an 84 in the handy, for a total of 170. Brian Post of Phoenix, Arizona set a lovely course which featured classic hunter elements such as hedge and hay bale jumps. The win was the second of the season for Lof, who two weeks ago during the Arizona Winter Classic captured the win aboard Nancy Gray’s Shine on Me. She has several other top finishes in the class, including a second-place finish aboard Dresden in the second week of the Circuit. Lof currently sits in the number 23 spot in the preliminary Diamond Mills
Hunter Prix Rider Rankings with three of the five classes needed to become eligible and 75 points aboard her leading mount. Tim Herrick of Scottsdale, Arizona finished second aboard Kelley Meredith’s Union Square and fourth aboard Bobbie Schaef’s Quiros Z. Susie Straus of Tucson, Arizona aboard Ryann Thomas’ Welcome and Rebecca Reyes of Saratoga, California aboard her own Dinner for Two finished third and fifth, respectively. In addition to capturing the title in the Devoucoux Hunter Prix, Lof also won the Arenus Performance and Conditioning Award. Arenus Equine Sales Specialist/Nutritionist Brady Karren was on hand to select this week’s winner and presented the award to Lof. The Arenus Tack Room Award went to Susie Straus and Wellspring Farm. Both winners received Arenus products from Karren. MD and Barnmaster Brands SOLD By Kate Grissom The Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians announced the purchase of the most popular modular barn brands, MD Barns and Barnmaster. The Tribe plans to combine the strengths and attributes of both nationally respected brands under the name MD Barnmaster. “We’ve acquired the assets of a company with a 30-year proven track record of designing and building high quality barns and structures,” said Bruce Thomas, Chief Executive Officer. “Rather than manufacturing and marketing two separate, competing brands, we’re merging MD Barns and Barnmaster under one umbrella brand; MD Barnmaster. The concept is to showcase two different models of one product line. The models will appeal to a broader nationwide market, and standardizing the products and marketing as one company will allow us to operate more efficiently and market more aggressively.” Before the recent housing crisis, MD Barns and Barnmaster reported impressive annual earnings, and Thomas expects MD Barnmaster estate investment and architectural design industries. The Tribe to do as well in the future under the Tribe’s ownership. also owns and operates the popular Rolling Hills Casino and resort in Northern California, which includes two hotels, three The Tribe owns several successful businesses in the general restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, event center, travel center, contracting, environmental services, waste management, real and three restaurants. “MD Barnmaster will compliment our

MD Barnmaster has 150,000 customers worldwide with projects ranging from 1-stall horse barns on family farms to a 1,000-stall equine facility. Thomas, himself a horseman, is as enthusiastic about the quality of MD Barnmaster barns as he is about the Company’s earning potential for the Tribe. “These barns come with huge benefits,” said Thomas. “They are cost-effective to construct, good-looking, easy to maintain, and built to help withstand snow, heavy winds, fire, earthquakes, and kicking horses. The company has an exceptional reputation for quality and customer service. Arabian Reining Success By Sue Adams Photos by Curtis LaMalfa The 8th Annual Arabian and Half-Arabian Reining Horse Futurities ran February 17 – 27, 2011 at West World of Scottsdale, as a separate reining horse show scheduled consecutively as a “show within a show” at Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Founded in 1998, the Arabian Reining Horse Association promotes the natural athletic abilities and versatility of both Arabians and Half Arabian horses. This year winners shared in some $175,000 in prize monies, plus trophies, saddles, buckles and jeans from new event sponsor Iron Horse Jeans. Open to four and five year old horses, the Arabian and Half-Arabian Futurity Classic includes both amateur and professional competitors. Most importantly, however, this event includes a lot of fun and camaraderie as reining horse owners across the country come to Scottsdale for one of their favorite competitions of the year. Some reining horse enthusiasts also have Arabians showing in other classes at the Scottsdale Show. This year marked the 56th annual event which takes on the festive atmosphere of a massive social gathering complete with staged vignettes for stall fronts and champagne barn parties. “Reining is a wonderful family sport,” says Association president Eleanor Hamilton of Eleanor’s Arabian Farm in Rogers, MN. “Thanks to these wonderful reining horses
and our exciting events I have friends all over the world really. This is a something for all show, professional trainers, amateurs – we call them non-pros – and both young horses and the seasoned reining horses. In only eight years we’ve amassed significant Futurity monies and more people are participating in reining with each Scottsdale Show.” Since its founding 12 years ago, the Association has now paid nearly $800,000 in prize monies during the Futurity Shows in addition to prize monies at regional shows. Funding is in part supported by the donation of breeding rights, called stud fees, with some of the industry’s top Reining horse sires in both the Arabian and Quarter Horse breeds available through the Association’s website, http://www.arha.net. According to Dick Ames, of Cedar Ridge Arabians, the Arabian-Quarter Horse cross continues to grow in popularity as the best traits of both breeds produce outstanding competitors. Ames, together with Tom Redmond and Joe Betten, were the “founding fathers” of the Futurity making substantial financial contributions to launch the event. These gentlemen are dedicated to providing more and greater opportunities for amateur competitors and attracting new participants to become good owners for the purebred and Half-Arabians being trained as reiners. They believe hosting a Show that is a lot of fun for everyone is the best way to accomplish these objectives and they continue to work on new and innovative promotional ideas. Like the Scottsdale Show itself, the Reining Futurity begins on Thursday and through the opening weekend features a mix of CONTINUED ON PAGE 12
classes for youth competitors. These classes provide an opportunity for young riders to hone their skills while making friends in the sport that will last a lifetime. Typically the Show opening falls on the President’s Day holiday weekend which allows local school children to attend the Show and be introduced to all the things that they can enjoy with Arabian horses. The Celebrity Slide class paired each of six “non-reining” trainers with a reining trainer for a few sessions of intensive training. Just before the “Slide” started the teams were auctioned in a Calcutta with 65% of the auction total awarded to the buyer of the winning team. This year’s winning team was Michael Byatt, of Michael Byatt Arabians, Inc. in New Ulm, TX, best known for his success in halter training, and Scottsdale reining trainer, Crystal McNutt of Crystal McNutt Performance Horses. The Arabian Reining Horse Association is affiliated with the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) and all events are judged by a five member team of NRHA certified judges. The Association’s Judging System is a highly acclaimed format for judging equine events that includes technical and stylistic elements coupled with considerable difficulty. This year’s judging team included Pete Kyle of Whitesboro, TX, Carlton Crowe of Gainesville, TX, Butch Carse of Orlando, FL, Drake Johnson of Wray, CO and Bob Kail of Scottsdale, AZ.

The county assessors are trying to get Governor Brewer to veto the bill. They are pressing hard stating that this Bill will shift the tax burden onto homeowners and non-ag property owners. POA Club News By Lisa Thunberg Zoe Chong from Cave Creek. Zoe is our lead line high point winner for 2010 and received a trophy for her hard work The Arizona POA Club started 2011 with an open show at P&M Arena in Mesa on February 12th. Our southwestern weather is gorgeous this time of the year; it was a warm, sunny day of about 75 degrees and with the Superstition Mountains for a beautiful backdrop, it made for a great show along with a large turn out of riders. Judging this event was Stacy Tucker. I want to thank everyone that volunteered to make the show run smoothly. Congratulations to our high point winners. In lead line, Paige Abbott was our first place winner followed by Hayden‌ High point performance in the 8 and under category was awarded to Ashley Fullbright. In the 9-12 age group, Marlie Rainey was high point in performance, while reserve went to Carly Thunberg. Gymkhana high point went to Jill Pfistner and reserve to Carly Thunberg. High point performance 13-18 goes to Sierra Taylor and reserve to Lindsay Peaton. In gymkhana, Lindsay Peaton was our high point winner and Emily Shaw was reserve. Lindsay Peaton, April Johnston, Katie Fisher and Sierra Taylor recently made the trip to the Fort Worth Stock Show in Fort Worth, Texas in January. The weather, thankfully cooperated, beating all the ice and snow that followed. They had a wonderful time getting together with POA members from all around. Also, the girls enjoyed the exceptional Texan hospitality. Thanks for representing the AZ POAC and congrats for a job well done. The AZ POA club is busy planning the Southwest Regional Show on May 28th followed by the Western Classic May 29th and 30th at Westworld in Scottsdale. We are excited about getting together with other POA members and friends from other states. Our next competition will be on March 26th, again at P&M Arena starting at 9:00am. This will also be

For show premiums and registration forms see our website at azpoac.com. For any questions please contact Lisa Thunberg at 480 982 6620 or 602 571 9292. This month’s photo and featured POA club member is Zoe Chong from Cave Creek. Zoe is our lead line high point winner for 2010 and received a trophy for her hard work. The trophy is almost as tall as her and she is super proud of it. Zoe’s favorite events are showmanship and lead line. She is 6 years old and attends first grade at El Dorado Private School in Scottsdale. She is also a very good scholar and gymnast. Pictured is Zoe and her pony “Believe It”, owned by Lisa Pope, who is also her trainer. As you can see by her smile, she loves to ride. She can’t wait to have her very own pony or horse. Zoe’s parents, Brian and Catherine Chong are very proud of her and we are lucky to have her in our club.
