Welcome to Leeds Museums and Galleries, a family of nine unique attractions for you to explore across the city. As the trees turn golden and darker nights draw in, we’ve got plenty of special events and exhibitions for you to add to your diaries.

3

Be sure to celebrate Heritage Open Days with us this year and take advantage of the selection of special events and venues offering free entry. October half term will also see the return of Spooky Scarecrow Trails, ghost tours and creepy crafts as all of our attractions host activities for families.

We’re lucky enough to welcome a special guest at many of our museums this December, Father Christmas himself will be doing the rounds at our grottos; there’s lots of festive cheer going around too as we get in the holiday spirit with everything from a special 12 Days of Christmas woodland walk to crafts galore.

This guide is just a small glimpse of some of our highlights over autumn and winter — we also have lots of smaller and regular events at each of our museums and galleries so visit our website to see what else is on leeds.gov.uk/ museumsandgalleries

Exhibitions

Visioning the Landscape Until 30 Oct 2016 Temple Newsam House

Crime and Punishment Until 31 Dec 2016 Abbey House Museum

Our Cousin Florence Until 31 Dec 2016 Lotherton Hall

To mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, Temple Newsam is joining the nationwide celebrations by exploring the history of the landscape. Showcasing a display exploring 300 years of the changing views at Temple Newsam through art works and Capability Brown designs, the House will bring this story to life with a programme of events and activities ranging from dance to drawing.

Explore the dramatic changes in crime and punishment over time. Take a walk into the past when you could be fined for putting plant pots on your windowsill, when gossipy women were put in scold’s bridles and people were executed for clipping coins!

Explore a more personal side to history’s most famous nurse, Florence Nightingale. This exhibition will use newlydiscovered family letters and sketchbooks to shed light on life within a fashionable Victorian family, who had ties to Lotherton Hall. Fashions of the period will showcase the dazzling events and culture that Florence Nightingale shared with her family, before ultimately taking a different path that would lead her to the Crimea and to become ‘The Lady with the Lamp’.

Visit leeds.gov.uk/ crimeandpunishment to find out more about our accompanying family activities and series of adult talks which delve deeper into the world of crime and punishment!
