We are delighted to launch British Art Show 8 (BAS8) here at Leeds Art Gallery. British Art Show is widely recognised as the largest and most ambitious survey of recent British art. Organised by Hayward Touring every five years, BAS8 tours to Edinburgh, Norwich and Southampton in 2016/17. Curated by Anna Colin and Lydia Yee, the exhibition reflects on the status of the ‘object’ and relationships between the real and the virtual. The exhibition features artists with a strong international presence, with many of the artists making new work for this exhibition. The exhibition fills the whole of Leeds Art Gallery, so make sure to take it all in. Let us know what you think by joining the conversation on twitter using the hashtag #BAS8 @LeedsArtGallery. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Post Forma by Martino Gamper
Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle and British Art Show 8 present Post Forma, a major new commission by acclaimed Italian designer Martino Gamper. Post Forma is a participatory work, which will see Gamper collaborate closely with Yorkshire artisans; specialists in weaving, bookbinding, cobbling and chair caning. This new commission will explore shared craft techniques as social activities that bring people together through the flow of knowledge and traditional skills. Post Forma is driven by Gamper’s interest in how objects can be transformed or reused, rather than thrown away. Transforming broken objects into unique pieces of craft, artisans will undertake design interventions in the Gallery, and will host workshops for visitors, who can bring along their broken belongings to be transformed and repaired in a unique way.
Post Forma will take place at Leeds Art Gallery on the 9 and 10 October, the project will then be presented at Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle venues The Hepworth Wakefield (24 - 25 October) and at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (26 - 27 October). An element of Post Forma will form part of British Art Show 8 in Edinburgh, Norwich and Southampton in 2016. Post Forma has been commissioned by Yorkshire Festival and Hayward Touring, in partnership with Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle and Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Programme.

With close to half a million visitors every year, the Gallery is one of the city’s most visited attractions and all the exhibitions are free. Alongside the extensive painting and sculpture collection, the Gallery presents a dynamic temporary exhibition programme that has showcased works of celebrated artists such as Damien Hirst and Gary Hume, as well as continuing to acquire artworks for the permanent collection; recent acquisitions include works by Simon Fujiwara, Becky Beasley, Fiona Rae and Bob & Roberta Smith. The Gallery has always been committed to the development of living artists. Early gifts included Lady Butler’s Scotland For Ever! (1881) and paintings by the popular Leeds based artist, Atkinson Grimshaw. The 20th century is represented by artists such as Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Paul Nash and Jacob Epstein, as well as artists of our time such as Frank Auerbach, Bridget Riley, Tony Cragg and Mark Wallinger. The extensive sculpture collection, the most comprehensive of any regional collection, includes a vast and unique archive; both are managed in partnership with the Henry Moore Institute.

It’s over a generation since British Art Show 3 was displayed at Leeds Art Gallery, when in 1990 it was one of the touring venues. As 2015 sees the Gallery launch British Art Show 8, we thought it only right to reflect on a few highlights within that 25 year period.

Leeds Art Gallery 2016
After British Art Show 8 closes in January 2016, the Gallery will go through a period of disruption whilst essential repairs take place to the original Victorian roof.
13
During this period most of the Gallery will need to close. The Leeds Art Gallery team will use this period to conduct collection research, as well as a new programme of outreach activity. In 2017, the Gallery will re-launch with an exciting temporary exhibition programme, including regular displays showcasing highlights from the world-class Leeds Collection. Please watch our website for the latest information www.leeds.gov.uk/artgallery or follow us on Twitter for a closer look behind the scenes @LeedsArtGallery.
