My appreciation of the built form and the history of architecture is what inspired me to become and architect. The belief that nature and the built form should complement each other has inspired me to focus on biophilic design. Biophilic design is the concept that every human has and needs a connection to nature to live a healthy vibrant life. Incorporating this aspect in design allows users to connect with nature by designing buildings that become one with their site, intertwined into nature and the community to create an environment that is rich for everyone.

PROJECT 1 Artist Inspiration Workshop The design concept is a painters workshop and community center. Artist Inspiration’s workshop will provide the Haight•Ashbury district with a community center where artist will be able to paint and work on creative projects. The community center will also be open to the public for various events held in the community such as concerts in the park. The design concept of the workshop was a painter’s pallet. The building’s long elliptical shaped design allows an abundance of natural light to enter the interior rooms. The building houses various workrooms, a retail shop, a small kitchen and washroom facilities. The building opens up on to three terraces located on the South side of the building allowing views of the park and Alvord Lake.

PROJECT 2 Sakura Hotel

The design concept of the hotel was to reflect the history of Japanese culture with the sakura flower from a cherry blossom tree. The Cherry Blossom Tree is a main aspect of Japanese culture. The blossoms are referred to as the Sakura and symbolize clouds and the ephemeral nature of life. The building reflects the spreading out of the petals as the tree rises to the sky. Open public spaces are located on the ground floor with conference and staff areas locate on the second floor. The top floor contains an upper lounge area. The upper levels of the hotel representing the five petals of the sakura flower houses the hotel rooms.

PROJECT 3 The Stem School Boston STEM School was designed to reflect the evolving technology driven education needs of today’s schools. The future belongs to those who can successfully interact with technology and apply real life applications in all fields of studies. The use of various methods of technology has changed the dynamics of the student-teacher relationship and this can be reflected in the design of the classroom areas. Open spaced classrooms allow students to work in groups or on individual projects. Incorporating outdoor classrooms provides additional class room space which can be utilized during different seasons.

PROJECT 4 CAC Program Study

A cultural art community center program study. The goal of the user study was to understand how people use space. The CAC is a cultural arts center that offers various workshops that teach visual arts to the community. The center serves as an art gallery, a place for hobbyist and artist to join together and learn and teach different craft techniques to patrons. The CAC building was built in 1861 and served as a State Arsenal until 1970. The red brick two story building with a church like facade hides one of the artistic gems in the downtown area. The age of the building created a disconnect between the workshop spaces and the students taking classes. During my visits to the CAC, I conducted user studies by observing use patterns of the workshop spaces, conducted interviews and handed out surveys inquiring how the users felt about the space and if they desired any changes to occur to the space. Once the research was completed, a design concept of a proposed reorganization and upgrading of space was completed.

The findings of the CAC program study indicated that the current space design was not utilizing the classroom space adequately. The ceramics workshop was the largest class but the space was not an efficient size for the number of students in the class thus limiting the size of the class and workspace. In order to create a space that was beneficial for all users the following proposals are suggested. I proposed to move both the jewelry and enameling studios to the area currently occupied by the ceramics group, by switching these groups it will allow the ceramics area to be next to the sculpturing area, allowing this space to be utilized by the ceramics users during downtime in the sculpturing studio. The second floor area includes a dye shop, painting and drawing area, the proposal to move the workshops for printing and book art from the third floor to the back area of the second floor will allow for a better utilization of this space and free up extra space on the third floor. On the third floor, where the book art studio was located will be replaced by a beginners weaving classes, this would free up several spaces in the third floor weaving studio and allow users a less congested space to work in. The basement center area would be used for photography classes and would include a darkroom in this space. Removable walls could be placed or removed when needed to meet future class schedules. Extra storage will be created in the current ceramics storage area.

PROJECT 5 Esprit Park Municipal Natatorium Design concept was to create a space to bring the community together. To create a community center that will allow visitors to participate in various sport activities. Swimming, court related activities which include basketball, volleyball and tennis will be offered at the center. Multipurpose areas will be used for various social events that would draw the community together. The facility will be located in the Esprit Park and will integrate the park and the facility together to allow visitors to interact with the open green space in the park area.
