the MEMBER NEWSLETTER FALL 2014
autumn at promontory Right Place, Right Time!
By Rich Sonntag With the hillsides ablaze and the first hint of snow in the air, Fall is my favorite season at Promontory! We just wrapped up another wonderful Promontory golf season, during which we have experienced excellent conditions on both the Dye and Nicklaus Courses. Promontory’s Pete Dye golf recently closed for the season, but there is still plenty of activities for you and your guests, amidst the blazing fall colors. While you’re here, check out the construction progress on the new Nicklaus Course Clubhouse. It’s rapidly taking shape and will be open for the enjoyment of Promontory’s Full Members for the 2015 golf season! Other highlights of summer 2014 at the Promontory Club included the opening of our new lap pool at the Ranch Clubhouse, the “Beat the Heat” Hunter Jumper Show at Promontory’s Equestrian Center and another fantastic 4th of July week of family activities, topped off by the Promontory Foundation
Celebration in The Shed Amphitheatre and the annual 4th of July Patriotic Picnic and Fireworks in Promontory’s Mountain Garden Park. The extra moisture this year has meant lush green vegetation all summer and will hopefully translate into spectacular snow conditions as we move into our upcoming winter ski season. The recent acquisition of Park City Mountain Resort by Vail Resorts (which already operates the adjacent Canyons) spells great things for the future of skiing in Park City. This, plus the just-announced acquisition of Solitude Basin by Deer Valley Resort, brings the inter-connection of our local ski resorts and the ultimate realization of the greatest ski destination on earth that much closer to reality. As you plan your family’s winter ski visits, be sure to make plans for Christmas Eve Dinner at the Hearth and to attend the Club’s New Year’s Eve celebration.

Member Spotlight: Giddings Family
The Giddings Family: Marisa, Kathlyn, Michael, Kiana, & Mike
A Taste of Italy Comes to Promontory It’s easy to imagine an Italian-themed movie starring Marisa and Mike Giddings that might be a cross between Moonstruck and Under the Tuscan Sun. From the controlled chaos that three children (two of whom are teenagers) bring to their lives, to the romance they share traveling and cooking Italian food together, glasses of red wine in hand, they bring memorable moments to their lives. Italy is a recurring theme in the Giddings’ lives. Marisa’s parents are of Italian descent as is Mike’s mother. After earning her Master of Education degree, Marisa spent two years teaching in Italy. She and Mike were married at Lake Como (in Italy) and have returned to the country with their children to attend weddings and visit family several times. Mike learned the importance of family—an Italian staple—at an early age. He has vivid memories of winters in Lake Tahoe where his mom’s family owned a condo equipped with only three bedrooms, one dormitory room, a picnic table for meals, and two small bathrooms. His Italian aunts, uncles, and cousins packed the condo to the rafters. “Sometimes we would have thirty people in that place,” Mike explained happily. Italian food is central to the Giddings’ family lives. Marisa, a mother and personal transformation counselor, and Mike, a professional scout for NFL teams, both love to cook. They have a collection of Giada De Laurentiis cookbooks and an affinity for Italian, red Antinori wines. “The kids all like Mike’s cooking better,” Marisa admits. His Chicken Parmigiana and Spaghetti Carbonara are household favorites. As they look forward to settling in at Promontory over the next few years, Marisa and Mike dream about the family gatherings and meals they will enjoy together—not to mention the hiking, golf, tennis, and skiing. For them, the community embodies all the things they love: family, food, friends, and living life to the fullest. Now, that’s Italian!

featured Iron Gate Winery at The Hearth Grille in September. A spectacular gourmet six course dinner with pairings from Iron Gate featured several wines from Willamette Valley in Oregon and Paso Robles, California. The dinner started with oyster shooters, and a poached pear salad, followed by a roasted wagyu bone marrow with paella risotto. To top off the evening, the entree was a savory wood fire grilled bison paired with a petite sirah. The meal was finished with house made fudge with dark chocolate drizzled over port poached cherries. It was a night to remember; great food, great friends and most of all great wine.
Sales Update, New Trapper’s Cabin - Astor Model The summer was marked by a flurry of Promontory sales and construction activity. With over 100 homes/homesites sold, Promontory enjoyed a 9% increase over 2013. Fourty eight homes are currently under construction with many more in design review. Now is an exceptional time to take advantage of Promontory End of Season pricing and incentive packages.
In July, members enjoyed a sneak peek of the beautifully designed Trapper’s Cabin 20 with exquisite Alder & Tweed interiors. Wine and hors d’oeuvres were served and those in attendance received complimentary gift bags.

Summer is an extraordinary time for adventure thanks to the Outfitter’s Cabin. Promontory Outfitter, Sean Smith, kept busy fishing with families on the Mountain Garden Pond, fly-fishing with members on the Provo River, taking beautiful hikes through Promontory, mountain biking with breathtaking views, and taking the Promontory boat on an excursion on the water with plenty of water toys to choose from.

“The best part of my job,” describes Sean, “ is watching proud parents watch their kids get up on a wakeboard for the first time, or a Grandfather watching his Grandson catch his first fish and experience the remarkable moment with them. I even had a chance to see kids impressed with their parents trying to wake surf!” Wakeboards are just another one of the many boat toys Sean takes along for the day. After giving a quick lesson, Sean gets them on the surf board and in

minutes they are surfing the wake. “There is something for everyone,” he commented. “One can tube, wake, ski, surf or just relax and take it all in.” Sean took first timers to seasoned enthusiasts. He will create a day that is fit for your family at any level you want to take it. The outdoors is an endless playground at Promontory and our Outfitter is your guide to every adventure.
“beat the heat” - Hunter Jumper Show
Cammi Gustaveson & Capital Heights
On an August Friday evening, the night before the third annual “Beat the Heat” A-Rated Jumper Show sanctioned by the Utah Hunter Jumper Association (UHJA) there was plenty of activity at the Promontory Equestrian Center. Riders and horses worked hard to prepare, and nerves shifted as the sounds of thunder and flashes of lightning headed towards Park City, causing more nail biting moments. Rain poured down and riders, trainers and helpers came together to calm the horses and prepare for the storm. Yet, no rain or storm could stop these determined competitors at the spectacular training facility, the Promontory Equestrian Center. As the rain passed, the show was delayed, but riders and horses were ready to ride at 2 p.m. and competed until 8 p.m that night, thanks to the hard work of the Promontory Equestrian Staff. The sun came out and brought perfect weather for the riders the next day on Sunday. With over 48 horses and 44 participants, the show was one to see.
It was the first time out of the three years that the show was held over two days, in part because participants encouraged the idea in order to enjoy all that Promontory and Park City offered. With beautiful scenery and plenty of activities, riders made a weekend trip out of it. The Promontory Show is the one of its kind offered in the Park City area. Many riders truly “Beat the Heat” from the surrounding areas, including Salt Lake Valley to enjoy the cooler summer breezes of Park City. Mambo With Rider Hope Mayernick

Started in 1972, the UHJA, is a jumper club that represents Utah jumpers. Janna Hambor, our Promontory Equestrian Manager, is the president of the UHJA. The club offers 11 Hunter Shows and 8-10 Jumper shows per season from April through October all over Salt Lake, Davis and Summit Counties. “Beat the Heat” presented 16 classes each day with 16 winners, all based on different formats, age and height. The winners are determined by their faults, speed, refusal (horse knocks down jump poles) and completing the course. Specific classes received over $1100 in prize money and ribbons, including Promontory winners, Maggie Hrdina and her horse Great Galaxy who completed the 3 ft. – 3 ft., 3”, and won 2nd place in the Children/Adult Jumper (combined class). Avery Lutter with her horse Popular J, won 2nd place in the Short Stirrup Jumper 2 ft. and 2nd place on Saturday for the Hopeful Jumper and 4th place for the Hopeful Jumper on Sunday. Congratulations to Maggie and Avery!
