Alumnae Swim / Season Preview A large contingent of swimming alumnae, 16 in all, showed up at the Burns Aquatics Center on September 25 to take on LMU’s women’s swim team, whose roster of 24 swimmers includes nine newcomers. Returning alumni jumping back into the pool included last year’s Student-Athlete of the Year, Trinity O’Neill, now a first-year law student at Loyola Law School, and eight-time conference champion, Lauren Mathewson `07, the PCSC Conference Swimmer of the year in 2007. Many of the alumnae put on their racing suits and goggles for the first time since their graduations in ‘06, ‘07, ‘08, ‘09, and this last May. In contrast, the current Lion squad had been training hard in preparation for the 2010-11 competitive season that opened on October 8, with a Pentathlon at Cal Baptist Universi-

ty in Riverside, Calif. To even out the playing field, the current Lions were evenly split into a Crimson and a Navy squad to take on the Alumnae. All races were relays with the Crimson team taking the 200 medley relay to open the competition and following up with two additional victories in the 200 breaststroke relay and 200 freestyle relay. The Navy squad was the first to touch the wall in the 200 backstroke relay and the 250 kick relay, while the Alumnae’s sole victory came in the 200 butterfly relay. The point tally at the completion of the competition had the Crimson squad leading with 45 points, followed closely by the Navy squad with 39 points, and the Alumnae with 27 points. The Lions return 15 swimmers from last year’s squad, including 10 All-Conference honorees:

5

senior sprinters Carolyn Pasque and Isabella Zhang and butterflyer Katie Carmody; junior distance swimmers Jill Dahle, Christina Cannata and Terry Rinder; sophomore breaststroker Camille Hopp, who holds the school records in both the 100 and 200 events, and backstrokers Kia Dobie and Noelani Vargas, and junior Tammy Choy, also a backstroker and individual medley specialist. Joining the returners this year are two sophomore transfers, Rachel Dekar, a breaststroker who swam her freshman year at Pepperdine before transferring to LMU, and Sophie Allen, a backstroker who transferred from the University of Maryland where she competed for the Terrapins her freshman year. Complete season Preview

Head Coach Bonnie Adair After becoming the first full-time women’s swimming coach at LMU, Bonnie Adair enters her eighth season with the Lions, having been named 2008 Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Coach of the Year. Adair joined the LMU program in 2002-03 with a 35-year background in swimming. Since her arrival, Adair has turned the LMU program into a contender at the Division I level, culminating in LMU’s first title in 2008. The Lions placed second or better in the PCSC in each of thier last four years in that conference, as the 2010-11 season will be the first played in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Most recently, Adair guided the Lions to a second-place finish in 2010. Following the last event at the Championships, Anne Scott, who won all three of her individual events and three relay titles, was awarded Female Swimmer of the Year for the second straight year. Scott is the first swimmer to earn the honor more than once, let alone in back-toback seasons. Over the course of the fourday competition in 2010, LMU earned six individual championship titles, three relay crowns, and 10 new LMU program records.

Assistant Coach Clay Evans

Clay Evans enters his 12th season as an assistant coach at LMU. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Lions’ program with his career as a competitive swimmer. Evans appeared in the 1972 Munich Games, and won a silver medal in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He studied at UCLA, where he was a fourtime All-American swimmer. He has broken over 40 Masters National and World Records. In 1979, Evans co-founded the Southern California Aquatics Masters (SCAQ) - the largest masters swim club in the United States. He was awarded the 1993 U.S. Masters Coach of the Year from the Masters Aquatic Association. In over 30 years coaching together, it is estimated that Evans and LMU head coach Bonnie Adair have coached or instructed more than 20,000 Los Angeles-area swimmers.

Assistant Coach Joanne Reierson Joanne Reierson enters her seventh season as an assistant coach at LMU working with the distance freestylers and breaststroke specialists. Reierson grew up in Indianapolis, Ind., and started swimming breaststroke and IM in high school. Much to her dismay, her coach entered her in the 500 as a junior, and so began her distance freestyle specialty. Reierson swam at Dartmouth College, where she majored in economics and math, and was captain her senior year. After graduating in 1993, she moved to New York City, where she joined the Asphalt Green Masters team and met her husband, Lars. They lived in Singapore for three years before moving to L.A. in 1998 and joining the SCAQ Masters. There, Reierson met LMU coaches Adair and Evans. Reierson has competed at the Masters short course National Championships off and on for more than 15 years. Her national titles include the 50 breaststroke in 1994 and the 1000 freestyle in 2002 and 2004. The Reiersons have two sons, Nils, who was born in September of 2005, and Reese, who was born in June of 2008.

aybe that we’re the only Catholic University in Los Angeles and one of the world’s renowned Jesuit institutions, a group that includes 28 universities in the United States and over 100 schools worldwide. Or, maybe, it is that Loyola Marymount University has been called a Hidden Gem by the Washington Post and ranked among the Best in the West by U.S. News & World Report. Or that our serene campus, overlooking Marina del Rey, offers one of the most exhilarating academic locations anywhere. Or that our five colleges, all connected to Los Angeles, enable students to make current contacts in technology, business, politics, art, music, and naturally, the entertainment industry. Yet there’s something more to consider. If you’re looking for a place to acquire facts and skills that will help you get along in the world, you have many choices. T

he Chronicle of Higher Education notes that at Jesuit institutions, this precept “translates into a large amount of individual attention from faculty members and accessibility to high-level administrators, including the president.” At LMU, students don’t simply benefit from cura personalis; they practice it, too, carrying out the Jesuit ideal of “men and women for others.” The Marymount sisters contribute a history of educating women and teaching through the arts, with a deliberately international perspective that encourages respect for all cultures. LMU brings these gifts together in seven colleges: • Business Administration • Communications and Fine Arts • Film and Television • Liberal Arts • Science and Engineering • School of Education • Loyola Law School

INSIDE THE LIONS: William H. Hannon Library is newest crown jewell to LMU. The 88,000-square foot library was completed in 2009 and is home to more than 444,200 books and 99,383 bound periodicals.

A Solid Foundation. University Mission AND Identity

L

oyola Marymount’s Mission and Goals Statement, approved by the Board of Trustees in 1990, succinctly states in its preamble the university’s three-fold mission:

* The encouragement of learning * The education of the whole person * The service of faith and the promotion of justice These often quoted phrases are at the heart of the campus community’s communal self-understanding. When unpacked, they tell us much about LMU’s identity as a Catholic, Jesuit/Marymount university.

INSIDE THE LIONS: LMU sits on a bluff that provides some of the best views in all of Southern California. From the edge of campus, one can see from Catalina Island, all the way to Downtown Los Angeles and beyond to the San Bernardino Mountains.

Develop the Whole Person. it’s who you are with hen it comes to providing friends and mentors, you won’t find a university surpassing LMU. The campus population comes from all 50 states and 70 countries. Better still, LMU offers more than 140 extracurricular organizations that hone the students’ skills and help them find like-minded colleagues for life. Whatever the religious belief, the university pays attention to individual spirit. “I’ve thought a lot about what makes my friends at college different than those from high school, and I’ve realized that the people at LMU live up to the mission of being men and women for others,” said a sophomore. Students are free to examine faith in social or service activities.

W

it’s where you live Every fall, nine out of 10 first-year students take advantage of LMU housing and for

some very good reasons. Some of the benefits of LMU living are simple: an active social scene, meal plans that allow students to dine at various campus locations, and easy access to classes and campus facilities. But university housing offers much more than simple convenience, it also gives students an edge. As a resident, students are immediately plugged into programs that help them achieve better grades, meet new friends, develop professional contacts and graduate in a timely manner. At LMU, we know that everything you do - including where you live - shapes the person you’re becoming. So LMU offers themed living communities where you pursue your education in a social context that’s relevant to you. Here, you live and learn in an environment that promotes reflection and character development, where your values are celebrated, challenged, shared.

IT’S WHERE YOU’RE BOUND “We’re trying to get rid of you,” said professor Kelly Younger, who directs the Honors Program, likes to tell LMU students. He’s referring to the study abroad opportunities, scholarships, internships, academic conferences and competitions that take students off campus and into the world. When it comes time to graduate, students will have the knowledge, the confidence, and the strength of spirit to achieve anything the students can imagine. To help you toward your ideal career, LMU offers a network of loyal alumni. “Even the summer after graduation, I am already aware of the benefits that LMU alumni networking offers,” says a new alum. “When we leave the undergraduate family, it’s as if we graduate into an even larger family that offers constant support.”

INSIDE THE LIONS: The sunken gardens is at the center of LMU and is the hub of activity, including home to more than 10,000 that attend graduation each May.

History of Champions. 2000s

1900s

F 1930s

1940s

rom the very beginning, LMU has extablished a history of champions. In the 1930s it was three straight ice hockey championships. In the 1940s the legendary Pete Newell played for the Lions and the rivalry with Pepperdine (1941) began. The 1950s saw Bob Boyd win the NCAA title in the 100-yard dash. The 1960s saw the Lions win their first basketball championship, and one of their first Olympians, rower Hugh Miller Foley (1964). In the 1970s, Loyola and Marymount colleges merged and saw women’s sports begin their dominate history, incluing a pair of tennis championships (1977, 78). LMU then exploded in the 1980s with more individual national champions (Therese Kozlowki in cross country) and more Olympians (Paul Sunderland men’s volleyball gold medal in 1984). The decade also included LMU’s trip to the College World Series (1986) and two women’s rowing Varsity Four National Titles (1981, 86). The 1990s started with one of the most memorable moments in sports history with the men’s basketball run to the NCAA Elite Eight in the 1989-90 season. Women’s volleyball became the first program to win three straight WCC titles (1994, 95, 96), thanks in part to Olympian and All-American Sarah Noriega. Baseball would end the 1990s with three straight titles, the final coming in 2000. Then came the past decade, as the Lions won more titles (22) than the previous 70 years combined. Leading the way were the men and women’s water polo programs, winning a combined 15 titles, including five straight (2001-05) and eight in 10 years by women’s water polo.

Leadership.

F

or Dr. William S. Husak life is all about family and his 13 years as the Athletics Director at Loyola Marymount University reflects his family-first approach to life. And that approach has brought success never before seen at LMU. Since taking over the program in 1998, the Lions’ success has been some of the best in program history, Husak firmly believes the program has “just scratched the surface.” The past 13 years have been some of the most successful in school history, winning more than 54 percent of its dual competitions and claiming 28 conference championships and 35 NCAA postseason appearances. Off the field, the Lions have had a 65 percent increase in national scholar-athletes as 208 claimed the honor in the 2009-10 academic year. His administrative efforts in striving for that success has been and continues to be a four-pronged approached focused on people, operational budgets, facilities and endowments. For Husak it starts with developing a family of coaches, support staff and administrators who believe that LMU’s athletics program can be among the elite in the nation. His tenure has been marked by enhancing the support of the athletic teams through: • Staff: Growth of head coaches from 9 to 19 in 10 years • Facilities: $35 million in enhancements since 2000 • Operational: LionsFund support at record high • Endowments: Scholarships tops among WCC Husak is quick to acknowledge the success of athletics is due to a University committed to its programs. Leading this direction was the formation of the Athletic Director’s Council. LMU athletic medicine

T

he busiest place per square foot on the campus of Loyola Marymount University is not what one would think. It is not LMU’s oncampus commons area, the Lair, University Hall or the LMU bookstore. It is the LMU Athletics Training Room. Right around 1,000-square feet, the LMU training room at any given moment in season is what Assistant Athletics Director of Athletic Medicine Keith Ellison calls “organized and controlled chaos.” On a given day, the Athletics Training Room will see about half of the 450 student-athletes at LMU. A given day will include lots of paperwork, therapy for studentathletes recovering from injuries that keep them out of competition, appointments with doctors and pre- and post-practice needs. With more than 50 years of experience in the field, the Training Program provides services that include a philosophy that places a high value on health and wellness, a program that allows injured student-athletes to return to their sport as soon as medically safe and to substantially reduce the risk of athletic injury for those student-athletes.

Strengthening Champions. LMU strength & conditioning

T

he strength and conditioning program at Loyola Marymount University is an essential component of the Athletic department’s quest for Building Champions. Leading the way in developing a strength and conditioning program that will be the basic building blocks to forming champions is Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Bobby Harmston, who is in his first year at the helm of the program at LMU. “We are here to train our student-athletes to be, first and foremost, the best athletically they can be,” said Harmston, who came to LMU in the summer of 2009. “We will be based around training the student-athletes at LMU to be fit across all 10 physical skills. We then will be training them to be sport specific athletes after we develop them as an overall athlete.”

staff:

LMU Strength and Conditioning Mission Statement “The LMU Strength and Conditioning Department will help all studentathletes reach their full athletic potential by developing all aspects of their physical and mental fitness. The ten recognized physical skills to be developed are Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy. We will develop these skills by using the following methods: Olympic lifting, strength lifting, body weight calisthenics, plyometrics, medicine ball throws, agility work, speed work, stretching, tumbling routines, metabolic conditioning, and CrossFit workouts. T

he athletics facilities at Loyola Marymount University have seen a little of everything in the almost 70 years while in its current Westchester location. From the 1984 Olympic games to LMU basketball to the World Cup and everything in between, the LMU athletics facilities have become home to the best and it continues to get better. Thanks to continued commitment by the University, the Athletics Complex over a three-year period will show lots of growth. It started in the summer of 2008 when the University allocated office and meeting space to Lion Athletics within the Dorothy and Thomas E. Leavey Center on the Westchester campus. Burns Aquatics Center The Loyola Marymount athletic department welcomed the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center to its family of sports facilities in August of 2000. The Olympic-size pool is part of the $20 million Burns Recreation Center and serves as the home venue for men’s and women’s water polo, as well as LMU swimming. Showing that it is one of the finest facilities in the country, LMU hosted the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship on December 7-8, 2002. Both days of the event were sold out with a crowd of over 2,600 for the championship. The NCAA granted LMU the event again for the 2006 championship. One of the premier aquatics facilities in Southern California, the Burns Recreation Center pool is heated and features an advanced deck-level drainage system. There are separate locker rooms for home and visiting teams, as well as office space and meeting rooms for the LMU aquatics coaching staff. Adjacent to the pool is permanent bleacher seating with a normal capacity for 800 fans. Added to the facility in the fall of 2001 was a state-of-the-art scoreboard. The scoreboard from Colorado Timing Systems features scoring systems for both water polo and swimming, including touch-pad timing for nine swim lanes. The fully digital system includes matrix and video capabilities and was installed thanks to the donations of Albert Gersten. In addition, a new audio system was installed prior to the start of the 2002 swimming season, and the aquatic center now features a recreational lawn picnic area complete with berm seating.

Aloha! LMU in Hawai’i Being a student-athlete at LMU comes with many perks, one of which is travel. The LMU swimming program spent a week in Hawai’i from January 10-16, 2010. The trip provided an all-around positive experience for the swimmers, teaming training and business with fun and shared experiences. The Lions also hit competitive water in Hawai’i, swimming against the University of Hawai’i in a dual meet on January 15. Head Coach Bonnie Adair asked each condo of swimmers to write one blog entry apiece over the course of the trip, which were then compiled and posted online so fans could follow the Lions while they were away. 2008 PCSC Champions LMU completed a fantastic four-day PCSC Championship run, culminating in the program’s first Conference Title in 2008. The Lions collected 1,212 total points over the course of the Championship, defeating their nearest opponent, Pepperdine, by 46 points. In addition, 11 Lion swimmers were named to the PCSC All-Conference team, three to the All-Academic team, and Head Coach Bonnie Adair was named PCSC Women’s Coach of the Year after the meet. Following the meet, the PCSC announced the names of All-Conference and All-Academic selections. After posting a then-LMU-record five swimmers on the All-Conference team in 2007, the Lions responded by more than doubling that total with an unbelievable 11 swimmers in 2008. Seniors Angela Samuels and Alex Wike, junior Rebecca Plume, sophomores Alexa Cook, Mallorie Lim, Kristen Lutjen, Trinity O’Neill, Megan Sawelson, Melanie Tansuwan and Alicia Witter, and freshman Carolyn Pasque were all named to the prestigious list. Wike was also named to the PCSC All-Academic team, an honor bestowed to junior and senior swimmers with a 3.5 GPA or better. Joining Wike on the list were senior Nicole Alvarado and junior Justine Elgas.
