Bonnie Adair

fter becoming the first full-time women’s swimming coach at LMU, Bonnie Adair enters her ninth season with the Lions, having been named 2008 Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Coach of the Year. Adair joined the LMU program in 2002-03 with a 35-year background in swimming. In her first season as a full-time head coach, Adair added 17 newcomers to the program’s roster, which doubled the team’s size and jump-started the new era of LMU swimming. Since her arrival, Adair has turned the LMU program into a contender at the Division I level, culminating in LMU’s first title in 2008. The Lions finished third in the conference in 2005 and set 16 of 19 school records in a historymaking season. LMU earned its first two conference event titles in 2005, winning both the 200 medley relay (Lauren Mathewson, Morgan Finley, Angela Samuels, Katie Hicks) and the 100 backstroke (Mathewson). The 2005-06 Lions added four more PCSC titles, winning the 200 medley relay (Mathewson, Sarah Hamilton, Samuels, Hicks), the 100 freestyle (Hicks), the 100 breaststroke (Hamilton) and the 100 backstroke (Mathewson). LMU posted a dual record of 9-5 in that season, marking the second straight winning season under Adair. Highlighted by 11 new school records and four PCSC event titles, Loyola Marymount finished second of 14 teams in the conference at the 2006-07 PCSC Championship. The team finished 7-5 in dual meets to extend Adair’s winningseason streak to three straight. PCSC Championship triple winner Mathewson,

along with teammates Morgan Finley, Alex Wike, Trinity O’Neill, and Samuels were selected to the PCSC All-Conference team. Senior Amanda Luciano was named to the PCSC All-Academic team. Mathewson’s three event titles came in the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 200 backstroke, earning her PCSC Swimmer of the Year honors. She was also a member of the 200 medley relay, along with Finley, Samuels and Wike, which shattered the existing meet record by over a second en route to the Lion victory. In 2008, Adair made it four straight winning seasons, turning in a perfect 9-0 record in dual meets en route to her first PCSC Coach of the Year selection. The perfect record marked the first time in school history that a team had gone undefeated. Adair and the Lions capped the outstanding season with a first-place finish at the PCSC Championships, posting a school-record 11 swimmers on the All-Conference Team. Alex Wike claimed the top-spot in the 50 freestyle, Rebecca Plume won the 500 freestyle and Alicia Witter took home the individual title in the 100 freestyle event. 2009 proved to be another successful year for Adair and the Lions, as LMU finished second at the PCSC Championship, just 22 points short of another team title. Despite finishing second, LMU scored over 140 more points than the 2008 Championship team, and Lion swimmers won five individual and three relay events, by far the most in LMU history. In addition, Adair saw Anne Scott named PCSC Swimmer of the Year and her Lions set four new PCSC records and six LMU records.

Clay Evans

COACHING STAFF

Assistant coach â&#x20AC;˘ 13th season

lay Evans enters his 13th season as an assistant coach at LMU. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Lionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; program with his career as a competitive swimmer.

Evans appeared in the 1972 Munich Games, and won a silver medal in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He studied at UCLA, where he was a four-time All-American swimmer. He has broken over 40 Masters National and World Records. In 1979, Evans co-founded the Southern California Aquatics Masters (SCAQ) - the largest masters swim club in the United States. He was awarded the 1993 U.S. Masters Coach of the Year from the Masters Aquatic Association. In 30-plus years coaching together, it is estimated that Evans and LMU head coach Bonnie Adair have coached or instructed more than 20,000 Los Angeles-area swimmers. a Click here for full bio

Joanne Reierson

Assistant coach â&#x20AC;˘ Eighth season

oanne Reierson enters her eighth season as an assistant coach at LMU working with the distance freestylers and breaststroke specialists.

Reierson grew up in Indianapolis, Ind., and started swimming breaststroke and IM in high school. Much to her dismay, her coach entered her in the 500 as a junior, and so began her distance freestyle specialty. Reierson swam at Dartmouth College, where she majored in economics and math, and was captain her senior year. After graduating in 1993, she moved to New York City, where she joined the Asphalt Green Masters team and met her husband, Lars. They lived in Singapore for three years before moving to L.A. in 1998 and joining the SCAQ Masters. There, Reierson met LMU coaches Adair and Evans. Reierson has competed at the Masters short course National Championships off and on for the last 15 years. Her national titles include the 50 breaststroke in 1994 and the 1000 freestyle in 2002 and 2004. The Reiersons have two sons, Nils, who was born in September of 2005, and Reese, who was born in June of 2008.

2011 Review

MPSF Championships / Postseason

Over the course of the first annual MPSF Championship, the 24-member Lion squad erased four school records and posted an unprecedented total of 58 lifetime-best swims. The Lions finished fifth of nine teams in the new MPSF Conference with 317 points, trailing UC Davis (726), UCSB (629), Cal Poly (614) and USD (408). Northern Colorado (247), Pacific (232), Seattle (201) and CSUB (200) rounded-out the final standings. A total of seven LMU swimmers garnered All-Conference recognition from the MPSF after the MPSF Championships. Of the seven, senior Isabella Zhang and sophomore Sophie Allen took home first-team selections in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, respectively. The MPSF selected a first and second team for each event, with Zhang (100 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 400 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay) and Allen (100 backstroke, 400 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay and 200 backstroke) both collecting a total of four awards. Senior Carolyn Pasque took home a second-team selection in the 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay, while Rachel Dekar earned three second-team nods in the 400 medley relay, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke. Junior Tammy Choy also earned a pair of secondteam selections in the 100 and 200 backstroke, while Yvonne Le (400 medley relay) and Camille Hopp (200 freestyle relay) each earned a second-team selection. Dekar, who had a stellar first year at LMU en route to claiming the second team MPSF All-Conference selection, was named an honorable mention All-American by CollegeSwimming.com at the conclusion of the season. Dekar swam to a fourth-place finish and a NCAA B-Cut in the 100 breaststroke at the MPSF Championships, setting one of her two new LMU program records. In addition, the native of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. became the first LMU swimmer to qualify for the US National Championships in the Long Course events. According to CollegeSwimming.com, Mid-Major All-Americans are selected on the basis on their qualification for the 2011 NCAA Division I Championships. Honorable mention selections are swimmers who were entered with NCAA `B’ standards, but not selected for the 2011 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Dekar earned the honor for her swim in the 100 breaststroke.

THE MSPF

The Sophomore Season ABOUT THE MPSF

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) was established during the 1992-1993 season to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10 and Western Athletic Conferences, as well as other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championships competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The founding principles on which the MPSF was originally formed were to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. Since its inaugural season the Federation has seen its primary conference membership grow by the addition of the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences and their respective member institutions, as well as the addition of women’s water polo, women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s swimming. As a testament to its viability, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation continues to successfully navigate the ever-changing sea of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion of its sports portfolio to meet the dynamic needs of its members. As the MPSF begins its 20th season in 2011-2012 and continues its legacy of championship competition, it affirms the vision of its founders and the relevance of its three founding principles, particularly during today’s tumultuous economic times. In 2011-2012, the MPSF will sponsor competition in 11 intercollegiate Olympic sports, adding men’s and women’s swimming for the first time, while serving approximately 1,800 student-athletes on 98 teams from 39 universities in 13 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming, women’s lacrosse and men’s volleyball. MPSF champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s volleyball champions earning automatic qualification into NCAA championship events. CHAMPIONSHIPS

2008: PCSC Champions LMU completed a fantastic four-day PCSC Championship run, culminating in the program’s first Conference Title in 2008. The Lions collected 1,212 total points over the course of the Championship, defeating their nearest opponent, Pepperdine, by 46 points. In addition, 11 Lion swimmers were named to the PCSC All-Conference team, three to the All-Academic team, and Head Coach Bonnie Adair was named PCSC Women’s Coach of the Year after the meet. Following the meet, the PCSC announced the names of All-Conference and All-Academic selections. After posting a then-LMU-record five swimmers on the All-Conference team in 2007, the Lions responded by more than doubling that total with an unbelievable 11 swimmers in 2008. Seniors Angela Samuels and Alex Wike, junior Rebecca Plume, sophomores Alexa Cook, Mallorie Lim, Kristen Lutjen, Trinity O’Neill, Megan Sawelson, Melanie Tansuwan and Alicia Witter, and freshman Carolyn Pasque were all named to the prestigious list. Wike was also named to the PCSC All-Academic team, an honor bestowed to junior and senior swimmers with a 3.5 GPA or better. Joining Wike on the list were senior Nicole Alvarado and junior Justine Elgas. 2010 hawai’i trip

Aloha! LMU in Hawai’i Being a student-athlete at LMU comes with many perks, one of which is travel. The LMU swimming program spent a week in Hawai’i from January 10-16, 2010. The trip provided an allaround positive experience for the swimmers, teaming training and business with fun and shared experiences. The Lions also hit competitive water in Hawai’i, swimming against the University of Hawai’i in a dual meet on January 15. Head Coach Bonnie Adair asked each condo of swimmers to write one blog entry apiece over the course of the trip, which were then compiled and posted online so fans could follow the Lions while they were away. MU is about the whole person and when it comes to providing friends and mentors to be a part of that mission, you won’t find a university surpassing LMU. a whole, the Lions posted a GSR of 89 and a Federal Graduaton Rate of 81, which is higher than the national student-athlete rates and the graduation rate of the general student body. he mission of the department is to provide an environment for student-athlete development that supports the pursuit of the highest level of success athletically and academically for the growth of the whole person in the tradition of the Jesuit and Marymount ideals. The purpose of the Intercollegiate Athletics Program at Loyola Marymount University is to support the overall mission, goals and objectives of the University by complimenting its primary academic pursuits with championship sports programs. rom the very beginning, LMU has established a history of champions. In the 1930s it was three straight ice hockey championships. In the 1940s the legendary Pete Newell played for the Lions and the rivalry with Pepperdine (1941) began. The 1950s saw Bob Boyd win the NCAA title in the 100-yard dash. The 1960s saw the Lions win their first basketball championship, and one of their first Olympians, rower Hugh Miller Foley (1964). In the 1970s, Loyola and Marymount colleges merged and saw women’s sports begin their dominate history, including a pair of tennis championships (1977, 78). LMU then exploded in the 1980s with more individual national champions (Therese Kozlowki in cross country) and more Olympians (Paul Sunderland men’s volleyball gold medal in 1984). The decade also included LMU’s trip to the College World Series (1986) and two women’s rowing Varsity Four National Titles (1981, 89). The 1990s started with one of the most memorable moments in sports history with the men’s basketball run to the NCAA Elite Eight in the 1989-90 season. Women’s volleyball became the first program to win three straight WCC titles (1994, 95, 96), thanks in part to Olympian and All-American Sarah Noriega. Baseball would end the 1990s with three straight titles, the final coming in 2000. Then came the past decade, as the Lions won more titles (36) than the previous 70 years combined and yet another Gold Medal (Reid Priddy 2008 men’s volleyball). Leading the way were the men and women’s water polo programs, winning a combined 16 titles in 11 years. The current decade includes men’s water polo winning its fourth straight title and men’s soccer claiming their first in 2010.

t is a common and accepted practice for institutions of higher education in the United States to date their founding to the day and year when the first instruction was offered. LMU began when the Society of Jesus opened the high school division of their newly founded Los Angeles College on September 11, 1911 with 80 boys of high school age. It changed names three times by the time it became Loyola University of Los Angeles in 1930 on a third site (our present Westchester campus). With the merger of Loyola University and Marymount College in 1973 the name changed again. Loyola Marymount University’s centennial will begin with commencement in 2011 and conclude with Commencement in 2012, naming graduates of both classes as “Centennial Classes.” The Centennial celebration at Loyola Marymount University, LMUat100, kicked

off with the 2011 Commencement ceremonies and will continue through May 2012. LMU Athletics will celebrate along with the University with a full list of special events, frequent online features and Centennial games for each of its NCAA Division I programs. The events for athletics started with the record-setting LionsFund Golf Classic and Dinner Auction in May, and with the start of the fall 2011 sports season, the LMUat100 Celebration will be a busy one. The Lions will honor LMUat100 with a Centennial game for each of its programs, starting with men’s water polo against rival Pepperdine on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 12 noon. Each game will feature special promotions and features that sport, its history at LMU, and the student-athletes and coaches who have made it a rich part of LMU’s history.

n 2011-2012, Loyola Marymount University will celebrate its Centennial, bringing to a close its first 100 years on the bluff. Within the athletic department, the last 14 years of that history has been led by Dr. William S. Husak, who was hired as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics in 1998. Those 14 years just happen to be the most prolific as Husak leads the Lions into a new century that will be as focused as ever on his mission of winning championships, achieving success in the classroom through graduating all student-athletes in four years and helping them grow as individuals as they move on to the next stages of their life. Since 1998, LMU has seen its most overall success in school history as the Lions have won over 58 percent of its dual competitions in that span and claimed 30 of its overall 43 conference championships (among sports currently sponsored by LMU within NCAA Division I competition) and 39 of its 61 NCAA postseason appearances. Off the field, the Lions continue to rank among the best in the West Coast Conference and in the west in the NCAA’s APR and Graduation Rate, and in 2010-11, a record 225 student-athletes claimed the National Academic Honors. Husak attributes the success that has come on the field and classroom to the commitment to athletics from the University as a whole and people within it. And for Husak it is all about the people. He has been committed to developing a family of coaches, support staff and administrators who believe that LMU’s athletics program can be among the elite in the nation. His tenure has been marked by enhancing the support of the athletic teams through: • Staff: Growth of head coaches from 9 to 19 in 10 years • Facilities: $35 million in enhancements since 2000 • Operational: LionsFund support at record high • Endowments: Scholarships tops among WCC Husak is quick to acknowledge the success of athletics is due to a University committed to its programs. LMU athletic medicine

he busiest place per square foot on the campus of Loyola Marymount University is not what one would think. It is not LMU’s oncampus commons area, the Lair, University Hall or the LMU bookstore. It is the LMU Athletics Training Room. Right around 1,000-square feet, the LMU training room at any given moment in season is what Assistant Athletics Director of Athletic Medicine Keith Ellison calls “organized and controlled chaos.” On a given day, the Athletics Training Room will see about half of the 450 student-athletes at LMU. A given day will include lots of paperwork, therapy for studentathletes recovering from injuries that keep them out of competition, appointments with doctors and pre- and post-practice needs. With more than 50 years of experience in the field, the Training Program provides services that include a philosophy that places a high value on health and wellness, a program that allows injured student-athletes to return to their sport as soon as medically safe and to substantially reduce the risk of athletic injury for those student-athletes.

he strength and conditioning program at Loyola Marymount University is an essential component of the Athletic department’s quest for Building Champions. Leading the way in helping to develop the strength and conditioning program to one of the best is the brand new Chad and Ginni Dreier Strength & Conditioning Center within the Lions Athletic Center. The new state-of-the-art Center puts the Lions at a whole new level. LMU Strength and Conditioning Mission Statement “The LMU Strength and Conditioning Department will help all studentathletes reach their full athletic potential by developing all aspects of their physical and mental fitness. The ten recognized physical skills to be developed are Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy. We will develop these skills by using the following methods: Olympic lifting, strength lifting, body weight calisthenics, plyometrics, medicine ball throws, agility work, speed work, stretching, tumbling routines, metabolic conditioning, and CrossFit workouts. LMU’s facility and program reflect the total fitness philosophy of the Lion Strength & Conditioning staff.”

pening in the Spring of 2011 was the Lions Athletic Center, and within its 16,000 square feet is the crown jewel of weight training facilities, the Chad and Ginni Dreier Strength & Conditioning Center. The new facility will be at the core of Building Champions at LMU. Named in honor of the Chad and Ginni Dreier Familty, the 4,000 square foot facility brings state-of-the-art equipment and space to train the more than 450 LMU student-athletes. The Chad and Ginni Dreier Strength and Conditioning Center includes 12 power lift power racks, 58 pull-up bars, a full set of Iron Grip Dumbbells, brand new bars and bumper plates from Uesaka Barbell, and Infinity Flooring with custom insets with logos.

he newest addition to the family of facilities that are home to LMU Athletics is the Lions Athletic Center. The 16,000-square foot facility is located between Albert Gersten Pavilion and Sullivan Field, and brings much needed space to the more than 450 studentathletes who participate on one of the 21 varsity athletic teams at LMU. The main piece of the building is the new weight training facility. Named by the Chad and Ginni Dreier Family, the weight room is more than 4,000-square feet and is one of the top training facilities in the West Coast Conference. In addition to the weight room, there are locker room facilities for baseball, softball, women’s soccer and men’s soccer. Also within the building is a pair of executive conference rooms and office space for the strength and conditioning coaches and for 8 Insider Info: the athletic facility operations staff. THE burns Aquatics cENTER.

ince it opened in the fall of 2000 as the home of Loyola Marymount University aquatics, the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center has become one of the premier facilities for aquatics in the nation. Its resume is impressive. The Burns Center has seen the Lions claim 17 championships, earn 185 wins and has been host to two NCAA championships in just 11 seasons. The Burns Aquatics Center has helped the men’s and women’s water polo teams claim 16 conference titles and the women’s swim team their first title in 2008. In addition to hosting the two NCAA Men’s Water Polo National Championships in 2002 and 2006, LMU has also hosted four Western Water Polo Association Championships - two for the men (2001, 2005) and two for the women (2003, 2008). The Lions have won three of them, both for the men and then in 2003 for the women. The Burns Recreation Center pool is heated and features an advanced deck-level drainage system. There are separate locker rooms for home and visiting teams, as well as office space and meeting rooms for the LMU aquatics coaching staff. Adjacent to the pool is permanent bleacher seating with a normal capacity for 800 fans. Added to the facility in the fall of 2001 was a state-of-the-art scoreboard. The scoreboard from Colorado Timing Systems features scoring systems for both water polo and swimming, including touch-pad timing for nine swim lanes. The fully digital system was installed thanks to the donations of Albert Gersten. In addition, a new audio system was installed prior to the start of the 2002 swimming season, and the aquatic center now features a recreational lawn picnic area complete with berm seating.

he athletics facilities at Loyola Marymount University have seen a little of everything in the almost 70 years while in its current Westchester location. From the 1984 Olympic games to LMU basketball to the World Cup and everything in between, the LMU athletics facilities have become home to the best and it continues to get better. Thanks to continued commitment by the University, the Athletics Complex over a three-year period will show lots of growth. It started in the summer of 2008 when the University allocated office and meeting space to Lion Athletics within the Dorothy and Thomas E. Leavey Center on the Westchester campus. The Leavey Center is home to 15 of the Lions’ 21 varsity programs in the newly remodeled and modern office complex and it continues today with the opening of the brand new Lions Athletic Center in April of 2011. • • • • • • • • • •
