Consistent Continuity 2011 SEASON PREVIEW

n winning their fourth straight Western Water Polo Association championship and eighth in 10 years in 2010, the LMU men’s water polo team had a senior class that became the first male class in LMU history to win a title all four years at LMU. In the process, the group combined to play over 600 games together. Ask Head Coach John Loughran the key to the Lions’ success the past decade, and he will tell you it has been that type of continuity and commitment. And entering 2011, it once again exists as the Lions look to win their ninth conference title in 11 years and with it the same number of trips to the NCAA championships.

“I think, number one, we recruit kids who are good fit for LMU and the program. It is hard to replace players like Andy (Andy Stevens), Tibor (Tibor Forai), and Ikaika Aki, because they were three outstanding players,” said Loughran, who enters his 15th season at LMU. “However, we have players who are ready to fill those roles as they have been training the last three years to get their opportunity to play. And I think it is there time.” The Lions bring back five seniors, four of which are fifth years seniors, and a trio of redshirt juniors that once again will help lead the Lions continuity and look to continue the Lions’ championship run. “I think the continuity comes from the guys

coming in and buying in early,” said Loughran. “Really spending their time improving and getting ready for this program. As each class comes by, we see guys more and more committed and that plays a real important role in our program.” Leading the way for the Lions in 2011 will be four-year senior Edgaras Asajavicius, a twotime All-American who led the Lions in scoring the last two seasons. He is joined by fifth-year seniors Charlie Horton, Albert Samuels, Max Schlegel and Peter Phelps; and a trio of redshirt juniors, Collin Walters, Robert Pusic and Jon Colton. a CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE SEASON PREVIEW

John Loughran

COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH • 15TH SEASON • 244-179 AT LMU

ust three weeks after LMU won its seventh Western Water Polo Association championship in nine years and playing its seventh NCAA tournament in the same time span, Loughran was diagnoised with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. So on Christmas Day 2009, following his 13th season as the men’s head coach, Loughran found himself in a hospital. Like so many of his teams, a complete team effort has Loughran in remission and back on the pool deck for his 15th season. And he didn’t miss a beat, leading the Lions to their fourth straight WWPA title and eighth in 10 years. “The only reason I am back on this pool deck is from the support of so many people, many of whom I don’t even know. If it wasn’t for their donations of blood and blood platelets, I might not be here,” said Loughran. “As my recovery moves forward and I continue to remain in remission, it is so important to me, and to this team, to continue to raise awareness on why it is so important to donate blood. There is a great need, and if we continue to team-up, so many will be helped.” Loughran started in the 1997-98 year and by 2001, he had both programs winning titles and going to the NCAAs. He has led the Lions to a combined 15 WWPA titles (7 for women, 8 for men) and 15 trips to the NCAA Championship

over the last 10 years as LMU has risen to become one of the top programs in the nation. In 2009, Loughran finally had a singular focus, taking over just the men’s program when LMU Ahletics’ Director Dr. William Husak announced in the summer of 2009 that the programs would have the focus of a head coach the entire year, hiring former assistant Kyle Witt as the women’s head coach, allowing Loughran to focus exclusively on the men’s team. In his first year with just the men, Loughran continued where he left off, adding the programs seventh Western Water Polo Association Championship in nine years and advancing to its seventh NCAA championship. The string of success started in 2001 when they won their first-ever WWPA championship, going 15-14 overall, earning a bid to the NCAA Championship. Two years later the Lions finished 17-14 and returned to the NCAA Championship with their second WWPA title in hand. Both teams finished third in the NCAA tournament. In 2004 he had his first repeat in men’s water polo with a 21-11 mark and another third place finish at the NCAAs. In 2005, LMU men’s water polo became just the fourth program in school history to win three straight conference crowns, defeating UC San Diego in the WWPA final at the Burns Aquatics Center. They added to their resume with the fifth title in 2007 with an impressive run through the WWPA tournament. In 2008, the

Lions dominated from start to finish, going 11-0 against WWPA foes and claimed a second back-to-back title stretch with the 12-10 win over UCSD for the 2008 title. Then in 2009, the Lions became the first program in LMU history to win three straight conference championships on two different occasions when they once again defeated UCSD, this time 5-4. That win gave the Lions 31 straight wins over WWPA competition. Adding to his impressive resume, Loughran has won nine WWPA Coach of the Year honors, four in women’s water polo (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004) and four in men’s water polo, including the honor in 2010 (2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2010). Additionally, Loughran has coached 10 different players to 22 All-America honors while having five players earn six WWPA Player of the Year honors from the men’s team, including Andy Stevens in 2008 and 2009, and Ikaika Aki in 2010. On the women’s side he coached players to 20 All-American honors and seven WWPA Player of the Year winners. Loughran came to Los Angeles after five years as head coach for the men’s and women’s water polo and men’s swim teams at Queens College in Flushing, NY. He led the Queens College men’s water polo team to a 75-63 overall record in five

seasons. In 1995 and 1996 Queens won the College Water Polo Association (CWPA) North Division title. Queens finished each of Loughran’s last two seasons ranked 15th nationally, the highest rankings in program history. Following the 1994 and 1995 seasons, Loughran garnered Eastern Championship co-Coach of the Year honors and received CWPA North Division Coach of the Year accolades in 1994, 1995 and 1996. The men’s swim team at Queens won the dual meet title for the Metropolitan Collegiate Swim Conference (MCSC) in each of Loughran’s last three years. In 1993, Loughran initiated the women’s water polo club program at Queens College. Then in 1996, they posted an 8-4 record in its inaugural year of varsity competition. The following year they finished second in the New York Division of the CWPA with a 13-3 mark. A 1990 graduate of Loyola University Chicago, he was a four-year letterwinner on the water polo and swim teams. A native of Greenwich, Conn., Loughran was a second-team High School All-American in water polo. Loughran resides in Los Angeles, Calif., with his wife, Merritt and their two children, Maeve and Finn.

Cara Colton

ASSISTANT COACH • 5TH SEASON

fter wrapping-up a stellar four-year career, which included her best season as a senior in 2007, Cara Colton wasted not time in returning to the Lions as an assistant coach of the LMU Water Polo teams. Colton earned her degree in May of 2007 and in November of 2007 she was hired by her former head coach to become an assistant for the Lions. Colton’s four-year career at LMU was book-ended by a pair of stellar seasons. As a freshman she scored four goals in the NCAA National Championship game against USC, the first by any team in LMU history. Three years later, Colton became a team leader and was named firstteam All-WWPA. She finishes her career ranked seventh all-time with 117 career goals and seventh with 44 career assists. In 2007 she had the best season of her four-year career by ranking third on the team in goals with a career-best 57, the eighth most in LMU history. She set career-best marks in almost every stats category with 19 assists, 35 kick-outs drawn and nearly doubled her career season total with 69 steals. She became the fifth person in school history to score six or more goals in a game with six against Indiana (3/18/07).

As a junior she earned All-WWPA honorable mention honors with 25 goals in 51 attempts (49.0 percent), tying for fourth on the squad in scoring. She added 38 steals, 12 assists and 20 kickouts, good for second, first and third on the squad. As a sophomore in 2005, she finished the season with 15 goals on 37 attempts (40.5 percent), scoring a pair of goals in the NCAA tournament while played in all 37 games on the season, helping the Lions to a program-best 30-7 record. In 2004 she played in 29 of the Lions’ 31 games as a true freshman, including both games in the NCAA Championships… earning valuable playing time, Colton scored 20 goals on 47 shots (.426 shooting percentage) and became a goal scorer for the Lions in the last part of the season, scoring 14 of her 20 goals in the last month of the season. She equalled an NCAA Championships mark with four goals in the NCAA title game against USC (5-9-04)…CIF selection as a freshman, junior and senior. She is the daughter of Rinske and Keith Colton and has three brothers, Joseph, Jeff and Jonathan. rian Bacharach, a 2006 AllAmerican for Cal, returned to the pool that was the pinnacle of his collegiate career, joining the Lions as the Volunteer Assistant Coach in 2010. He will also be attending USC business school and working towards his MBA. The 2011 season will be his second with the Lions. Bacharach finished his career at Cal with 151 career goals, including a team-best two in the 2006 NCAA National Championship, which Cal defeated USC, 7-6, It was the Bears 12th national title and Bacharach was one of the Bears’ team captains for the second consecutive seasons. As a senior for the Bears in 2006, he scored 46 goals and was a ACWPC Honorable Mention All-American, as well as an MPSF All-Academic and a ACWPC All-Academic selection. His best season in terms of goals was as a redshirt sophomore in 2004, scoring 48 to rank second on the team. For his career, he was a four-time MPSF All-Academic and ACWPC All-Academic selection. He played five years with the Bears, serving a redshirt year in 2002 after graduating from De La Salle High School. After graduating Cal in the spring of 2007, Bacharach went on to play professionally in Australia for the Cronulla Sharks. In the fall of 2007, se returned to

De La Salle High School, this time as a teacher and coach. He taught math and psychology while also serving as assistant varsity coach for the boys’ water polo team through the spring of 2009. He helped De La Salle earn NCS Runner-up honors in 2008 while claiming EBAL League title in 2008 and 2009. In addition to his teaching duties, Bacharach has ran the men’s side of the Diablo Water Polo Club of Moraga, Calif., the last three years (2008-10), leading the 18-under team to its three highest finishes in the program’s 12-year existence. He has also continued competitive water polo as a player, competing for the San Francisco Olympic Club. Helped his team win the 2010 Fisher Cup and was selected as an USWP All-American four times since graduating from Cal. At De La Salle High School was a two-time high school All-American in water polo, was a three-time first-team North Coast Section selection, as well as North Coast Section MVP and Junior Olympic AllAmerican in 2001. He helped his team to North Coast Section titles in 2000 and 2001, and a Junior Olympic championship in 2000. 2010: A RECORD FOUR 2010 • 20-9

LMU men’s water polo became the first men’s program in school history to win four straight conference championships thanks to a 9-6 win over UC Davis to claim the 2010 WWPA title. The program continued to add to its success, earning its eighth title in 10 years, the most of any men’s program in school history. The Lions advanced to their eighth NCAA tournament in 10 years, taking on host and second-ranked Cal in the semifinals. And for the third straight year, and fourth in five years, the Lions would fall by a single goal, as Cal would score in the closing minute to earn a 7-6 win. In the consolation final, the Lions would go up 9-4 in the third quarter and would play their entire bench in route to 9-7 win over St. Francis. They would go on to finish ranked seventh in the nation and four Lions were All-America honors. Andy Stevens and Tibor Forai would claim their fourth All-American honor, becoming first student-athletes in LMU history to earn the status all four years of competition. In addition, Forai became the 10th CoSIDA Academic All-American, earning second-team honors. The Lions had six seniors that played all four years together, becoming the first men’s class to win a title in each of the competitive seasons. They would combine to play over 600 games as a group.

All season the LMU men’s water polo team was one of the top-rated defenses in the nation, and the Lions defense came up huge when it mattered most. The Lions defeated No. 10 UC San Diego, 5-4, in the Western Water Polo Association Championship at Chapman University. It was the Lions third consecutive title and seventh in nine years. Redshirt sophomore Max Schlegel broke a 4-4 tie with 4:01 to play in the game when he scored just outside of five-meters. With the lead, the Lions’ defense and WWPA MVP goalie Andy Stevens kept the Tritons off the board in the final frame. Stevens had 14 saves in the game, four in the final frame. Schlegel’s goal was the only time a team scored back-to-back goals in the game. The Lions scored the final goal of the third period and then Schlegel scored the would-be game winner. LMU advanced to their seventh National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championship. For the third time in four trips to the National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championship, the Lions suffered a heartbreaking setback, this time to No.1 ranked UCLA in overtime, 9-8. With 37 seconds left in the second overtime, Cole Consami scored on a 6-on-5 from three-meters to give the Bruins the one-goal win in a back-and-forth contest at Princeton University’s DeNunzio Pool. The Lions then fell to the host in the consolation final, 6-5.

LMU picked the best time of the season to play their best half of water polo as they executed to near perfection in the second half of the 2008 WWPA title game to pull away from ninth-ranked UC San Diego and earn a 12-10 win. Andrew Aki tied the game with 4:50 to play in the third quarter and then gave LMU an 8-7 lead 40 seconds later. UC San Diego managed to tie the game at 8-8 with 2:54 to play in the third period, setting the tone for yet another tight finish. LMU’s defense, led by tournament MVP Andy Stevens in goal, would allow just two more goals the rest of the way. Stevens, who was also the WWPA Player of the Year, would finish the game with 15 saves. Senior Tim Heafner would close the third frame with a goal to give LMU a 9-8 lead, one they would not let go of. In the NCAA tournament, the Lions led almost the entire game against host Stanford, but saw the Cardinal break a 5-5 tie with the game winner with just 18 seconds on the clock. LMU entered the season with one of its youngest rosters in program history and entered the WWPA tournament in November with its lowest seed in the decade at No. 3. It was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Not so fast. Played in Colorado at the Air Force Academy, they opened the WWPA tournament by defeating six-seed Redlands, 168, and then avenged a regular season setback to No. 2 seed Santa Clara, 12-8. The Lions then played UC Davis for the fourth time on the season, losing the previous three by a combined five goals. This time they trailed 6-5 in the third but shutout UCD in the fourth and Tim Heafner scored in the final minutes to push the Lions back to the NCAAs. In the final four, the Lions gave USC all they wanted but fell down the stretch to the top-ranked Trojans, 8-4. In the consolation game, the Lions fell to No. 9 Navy, 7-6, the seventh one-goal game on the season for the Crimson and Navy. The Loyola Marymount men’s water polo team finished its best for last in the 2005 season, winning eight of their last 11 as they won their third straight Western Water Polo Association championship and fourth in the last five years. The Lions, considered the underdog to rival UC San Diego, earned a thrilling 7-6 win over the Tritons at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center, giving the Lions the automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship. The Lions pushed Stanford to the brink, falling 7-6 in the semifinals before defeating 11thranked Saint Francis, 10-6, in the third place match. In a season that was supposed to be a rebuilding type year, the Loyola Marymount University men’s water polo team proved everyone wrong as they worked themselves to a second straight Western Water Polo Association championship in 2004 with a 21-11 final record. The Lions, coming one win shy of tying the program record in wins, took third in the 2004 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championships with a 6-5 win over Princeton. The onegoal win over Princeton was part of a theme for the Lions in 2004 as they made a habit of pulling out the close wins. LMU went 12-4 on the season in games decided by two goals or less. In the stretch the Lions went 3-0 in overtime games, winning all three by one goal. They defeatied No. 7 Long Beach State, 8-7, No. 17 Whittier, 12-11, and No. 13 UC Davis, 7-6. The wins over Whittier and UC Davis helped the Lions advance to the WWPA title game. The seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount University men’s water polo team won the 2003 Western Water Polo Association title and finished third in the 2003 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship in December. The Lions finished the season 17-14 overall and 12-3 in the WWPA. The Lions claimed a 6-5 win over seventh-ranked UC San Diego. It was a fitting reversal of fortunes for the Lions. In the regular season the Lions were on the wrong end of heartbreakers all season, losing 10 of their 14 games by one-goal or in overtime. All 10 of those games came against teams ranked in the top-20 nationally, including two games at the hands of the Tritons. The Lions opened up the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship against the 2002 National Champions, Stanford. In an offensive showcase, the Lions fell to the Cardinal in their home pool 14-8. The 2001 season set in motion a new era for LMU men’s water polo as the team went 15-14 overall and won their first Western Water Polo Association Championship with a 4-2 win over UC San Diego at the brand new Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center. Opened that season, the Lions posted 10 wins at home that helped them to the programs first ever NCAA tournament. The Lions made their first trip a memorable one as they battled UCLA to the end in a 7-5 setback in the semifinals before making it look easy in the third place game. a whole, the Lions posted a GSR of 89 and a Federal Graduaton Rate of 81, which is higher than the national student-athlete rates and the graduation rate of the general student body. HISTORY OF CHAMPIONS.

rom the very beginning, LMU has established a history of champions. In the 1930s it was three straight ice hockey championships. In the 1940s the legendary Pete Newell played for the Lions and the rivalry with Pepperdine (1941) began. The 1950s saw Bob Boyd win the NCAA title in the 100-yard dash. The 1960s saw the Lions win their first basketball championship, and one of their first Olympians, rower Hugh Miller Foley (1964). In the 1970s, Loyola and Marymount colleges merged and saw women’s sports begin their dominate history, including a pair of tennis championships (1977, 78). LMU then exploded in the 1980s with more individual national champions (Therese Kozlowki in cross country) and more Olympians (Paul Sunderland men’s volleyball gold medal in 1984). The decade also included LMU’s trip to the College World Series (1986) and two women’s rowing Varsity Four National Titles (1981, 89). The 1990s started with one of the most memorable moments in sports history with the men’s basketball run to the NCAA Elite Eight in the 1989-90 season. Women’s volleyball became the first program to win three straight WCC titles (1994, 95, 96), thanks in part to Olympian and All-American Sarah Noriega. Baseball would end the 1990s with three straight titles, the final coming in 2000. Then came the past decade, as the Lions won more titles (36) than the previous 70 years combined and yet another Gold Medal (Reid Priddy 2008 men’s volleyball). Leading the way were the men and women’s water polo programs, winning a combined 16 titles in 11 years. The current decade includes men’s water polo winning its fourth straight title and men’s soccer claiming their first in 2010.

t is a common and accepted practice for institutions of higher education in the United States to date their founding to the day and year when the first instruction was offered. LMU began when the Society of Jesus opened the high school division of their newly founded Los Angeles College on September 11, 1911 with 80 boys of high school age. It changed names three times by the time it became Loyola University of Los Angeles in 1930 on a third site (our present Westchester campus). With the merger of Loyola University and Marymount College in 1973 the name changed again. Loyola Marymount University’s centennial will begin with commencement in 2011 and conclude with Commencement in 2012, naming graduates of both classes as “Centennial Classes.” The Centennial celebration at Loyola Marymount University, LMUat100, kicked

off with the 2011 Commencement ceremonies and will continue through May 2012. LMU Athletics will celebrate along with the University with a full list of special events, frequent online features and Centennial games for each of its NCAA Division I programs. The events for athletics started with the record-setting LionsFund Golf Classic and Dinner Auction in May, and with the start of the fall 2011 sports season, the LMUat100 Celebration will be a busy one. The Lions will honor LMUat100 with a Centennial game for each of its programs, starting with men’s water polo against rival Pepperdine on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 12 noon. Each game will feature special promotions and features that sport, its history at LMU, and the student-athletes and coaches who have made it a rich part of LMU’s history.

LION LEADERSHIP.

n 2011-2012, Loyola Marymount University will celebrate its Centennial, bringing to a close its first 100 years on the bluff. Within the athletic department, the last 14 years of that history has been led by Dr. William S. Husak, who was hired as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics in 1998. Those 14 years just happen to be the most prolific as Husak leads the Lions into a new century that will be as focused as ever on his mission of winning championships, achieving success in the classroom through graduating all student-athletes in four years and helping them grow as individuals as they move on to the next stages of their life. Since 1998, LMU has seen its most overall success in school history as the Lions have won over 58 percent of its dual competitions in that span and claimed 30 of its overall 43 conference championships (among sports currently sponsored by LMU within NCAA Division I competition) and 39 of its 61 NCAA postseason appearances. Off the field, the Lions continue to rank among the best in the West Coast Conference and in the west in the NCAA’s APR and Graduation Rate, and in 2010-11, a record 225 student-athletes claimed the National Academic Honors. Husak attributes the success that has come on the field and classroom to the commitment to athletics from the University as a whole and people within it. And for Husak it is all about the people. He has been committed to developing a family of coaches, support staff and administrators who believe that LMU’s athletics program can be among the elite in the nation. His tenure has been marked by enhancing the support of the athletic teams through: • Staff: Growth of head coaches from 9 to 19 in 10 years • Facilities: $35 million in enhancements since 2000 • Operational: LionsFund support at record high • Endowments: Scholarships tops among WCC Husak is quick to acknowledge the success of athletics is due to a University committed to its programs. LMU ATHLETIC MEDICINE

he busiest place per square foot on the campus of Loyola Marymount University is not what one would think. It is not LMU’s oncampus commons area, the Lair, University Hall or the LMU bookstore. It is the LMU Athletics Training Room. Right around 1,000-square feet, the LMU training room at any given moment in season is what Assistant Athletics Director of Athletic Medicine Keith Ellison calls “organized and controlled chaos.” On a given day, the Athletics Training Room will see about half of the 450 student-athletes at LMU. A given day will include lots of paperwork, therapy for studentathletes recovering from injuries that keep them out of competition, appointments with doctors and pre- and post-practice needs. With more than 50 years of experience in the field, the Training Program provides services that include a philosophy that places a high value on health and wellness, a program that allows injured student-athletes to return to their sport as soon as medically safe and to substantially reduce the risk of athletic injury for those student-athletes. The Training Room at LMU features state-of-the-art equipment in a 1,000-square foot athletic medicine complex. pening in the Spring of 2011 was the Lions Athletic Center, and within its 16,000 square feet is the crown jewel of weight training facilities, the Chad and Ginni Dreier Strength & Conditioning Center. The new facility will be at the core of Building Champions at LMU. Named in honor of the Chad and Ginni Dreier Familty, the 4,000 square foot facility brings state-of-the-art equipment and space to train the more than 450 LMU student-athletes. The Chad and Ginni Dreier Strength and Conditioning Center includes 12 power lift power racks, 58 pull-up bars, a full set of Iron Grip Dumbbells, brand new bars and bumper plates from Usaka Barbell, and Infinity Flooring with custom insets with logos.

THE LIONS ATHLETIC CENTER.

he newest addition to the family of facilities that are home to LMU Athletics is the Lions Athletic Center. The 16,000-square foot facility is located between Albert Gersten Pavilion and Sullivan Field, and brings much needed space to the more than 450 studentathletes who participate on one of the 21 varsity athletic teams at LMU. The main piece of the building is the new weight training facility. Named by the Chad and Ginni Dreier Family, the weight room is more than 4,000-square feet and is one of the top training facilities in the West Coast Conference. In addition to the weight room, there are locker room facilities for baseball, softball, women’s soccer and men’s soccer. THE BURNS AQUATICS CENTER.

ince it opened in the fall of 2000 as the home of Loyola Marymount University aquatics, the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center has become one of the premier facilities for aquatics in the nation. Its resume is impressive. The Burns Center has seen the Lions claim 17 championships, earn 185 wins and has been host to two NCAA championships in just 11 seasons.

The Burns Aquatics Center has helped the men’s and women’s water polo teams claim 16 conference titles and the women’s swim team their first title in 2008. In addition to hosting the two NCAA Men’s Water Polo National Championships in 2002 and 2006, LMU has also hosted four Western Water Polo Association Championships - two for the men (2001, 2005) and two for the women (2003, 2008). The Lions have won three of them, both for the men and then in 2003 for the women.

The Lions have thrived in the state-of-the-art facility, earning a record of 155-48 in eight seasons. The men’s team went a program-best 4-1 (.800) in 2010, are 10-1 the last two seasons combined and have compiled a record of 73-32 (.695) during its stay at the Center. Their best record came in the pool’s first season in 2000 as they went 10-2 (.833)

he athletics facilities at Loyola Marymount University have seen a little of everything in the almost 70 years while in its current Westchester location. From the 1984 Olympic games to LMU basketball to the World Cup and everything in between, the LMU athletics facilities have become home to the best and it continues to get better. Thanks to continued commitment by the University, the Athletics Complex over a three-year period will show lots of growth. It started in the summer of 2008 when the University allocated office and meeting space to Lion Athletics within the Dorothy and Thomas E. Leavey Center on the Westchester campus.
