BURNS AQUATICS CENTER
Home of the Lions.
Since it opened in the fall of 2000 as the home of Loyola Marymount University aquatics, the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center has become one of the premier facilities for aquatics in the nation. The Burns Center has seen the Lions claim 19 championships in water polo and swimming. In addition to hosting the two NCAA Men's Water Polo National Championship in 2002 and 2006, LMU has also hosted four Western Water Polo Association Championships - two for the men (2001, 2005) and two for the women (2003, 2008), and the first-ever Golden Coast Conference Championship for women's water polo in 2014. The Lions have won four of them, both for the men and then in 2003 and 2014 for the women. The Burns Center is home to the on campus recreation center, which sees thousands of community members, students, faculty and staff through its doors each day. Included with the facility, which celebrates its 10th Anniversary in 2010-11, is the Olympic size pool that is part of the $20-million Burns Rec Center and serves as the home venue for men's and women's water polo as well as LMU swim meets.

One of the premier aquatics facilities in Southern California, the Burns recreation center pool is heated and features an advanced deck-level drainage system. There are separate locker rooms for home and visiting teams as well as office space and meeting rooms for the LMU aquatics' coaching staff. Adjacent to the pool is permanent bleacher seating with a normal capacity for 800 fans. Added to the facility in the fall of 2001 was a state-of-the-art scoreboard. The scoreboard from Colorado Timing Systems features scoring systems for both water polo and swimming, including the touch-pad timing for eight swim lanes. The fully digital system includes matrix and video capabilities and was installed thanks to the donations of Albert Gersten. In addition, a new audio system was installed prior to the start of the 2009 women's water polo season.
Swimming HEAD COACH
BONNIE ADAIR 12TH SEASON AT LMU
Guided LMU to PCSC Championship in 2008 Coached Three Conference Swimmers of the Year 17 All-Conference Selections Over Last Four Years 15 All-Academic Selections During 2013-14 Season Alma Mater | UCLA, 75; Loyola Law, '81
After becoming the first full-time women's swimming coach at LMU, Bonnie Adair enters her 12th season with the Lions in 2014-15, having been named 2008 Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Coach of the Year. The Lions will return to the PCSC this year after four seasons in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Adair joined the LMU program in 2002-03 with a 35year background in swimming. Last year at the 2014 MPSF Championships, Adair saw five of her swimmers earn All-MPSF honors as LMU finished eighth overall. Kjirsten Magnuson earned first team honors in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke, breaking LMU records in both events. Rachel Dekar was also a two-time All-MPSF selection, earning second-team selections in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Kristen Clarno, who set a new LMU record in the 400 IM, reached the Championship final in the 200 IM to earn her second-team All-MPSF selection. Hannah Calton claimed second-team AllMPSF in the 100 butterfly after breaking her own 100 butterfly record in the morning preliminaries. Finally, Angelina Prat reached the Championship final in the 200 butterfly en route to her second-team All-MPSF selection. At the conclusion of the meet, LMU had set five new program records and landed 15 swimmers on the MPSF All-Academic team. In her first season as a full-time head coach, Adair added 17 newcomers to the program's roster, which doubled the team's size and jump-started the new era of LMU swimming.

Since her arrival, Adair has turned the LMU program into a contender at the Division I level, culminating in LMU's first title in 2008. The Lions finished third in the conference in 2005 and set 16 of 19 school records in a history-making season. LMU earned its first two conference event titles in 2005, winning both the 200 medley relay (Lauren Mathewson, Morgan Finley, Angela Samuels, Katie Hicks) and the 100 backstroke (Mathewson). The 2005-06 Lions added four more PCSC titles, winning the 200 medley relay (Mathewson, Sarah Hamilton, Samuels, Hicks), the 100 freestyle (Hicks), the 100 breaststroke (Hamilton) and the 100 backstroke (Mathewson). LMU posted a dual record of 9-5 in that season, marking the second straight winning season under Adair. Highlighted by 11 new school records and four PCSC event titles, Loyola Marymount finished second of 14 teams in the conference at the 2006-07 PCSC Championship. The team finished 7-5 in dual meets to extend Adair's winning-season streak to three straight. PCSC Championship triple winner Mathewson, along with teammates Morgan Finley, Alex Wike, Trinity O'Neill, and Samuels were selected to the PCSC All-Conference team. Senior Amanda Luciano was named to the PCSC All-Academic team. Mathewson's three event titles came in the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 200 backstroke, earning her PCSC Swimmer of the Year honors. She was also a member of the 200 medley relay, along with Finley, Samuels and Wike, which shattered the existing meet record by over a second en route to the Lion victory.
In 2008, Adair made it four straight winning seasons, turning in a perfect 9-0 record in dual meets en route to her first PCSC Coach of the Year selection. The perfect record marked the first time in school history that a team had gone undefeated. Adair and the Lions capped the outstanding season with a first-place finish at the PCSC Championships, posting a school-record 11 swimmers on the All-Conference Team. Alex Wike claimed the top-spot in the 50 freestyle, Rebecca Plume won the 500 freestyle and Alicia Witter took home the individual title in the 100 freestyle event. 2009 proved to be another successful year for Adair and the Lions, as LMU finished second at the PCSC Championship, just 22 points short of another team title. Despite finishing second, LMU scored over 140 more points than the 2008 Championship team, and Lion swimmers won five individual and three relay events, by far the most in LMU history. In addition, Adair saw Anne Scott named PCSC Swimmer of the Year and her Lions set four new PCSC records and six LMU records. Adair guided the Lions to yet another second-place finish at the PCSC Championships in 2010, their final year in the PCSC before moving to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2010-11. Following the last event at the PCSC Championships, Scott, who won all three of her individual events and three relay titles, was awarded Female Swimmer of the Year for the second straight year. She remains just the second swimmer in LMU history to earn this top honor, following Mathewson's three-event win in 2007. Furthermore, she is the first swimmer to earn the honor more than once, let alone in back-to-back seasons. Scott beat a NCAA National Time Standard in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle, and was a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that also met a standard. Over the course of the four-day competition in 2010, LMU earned six individual championship titles, three relay crowns, and 10 new LMU program records.
Swimming In her first year coaching in the MPSF in 2011, Adair guided the Lions to a fifth-place finish out of nine teams. Over the course of the four-day championship competition, the 24-member Lion squad erased four school records and posted an unprecedented total of 58 lifetime-best swims. A total of seven LMU swimmers garnered All-Conference recognition in the inaugural year, including a pair of first-team selections. Always strong in the classroom, the 2011 team was named to The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American list for its work during the spring 2011 semester. The Lions combined for a 3.29 GPA over the course of the semester, including placing a MPSF-best 12 swimmers on the All-Academic team. The 2012 season saw the Lions finish eighth out of 10 teams at the MPSF Championships. A pair of LMU swimmers garnered All-Conference recognition from the MPSF after the MPSF Championships, as Tammy Choy was named to the second team for her efforts in the 100 backstroke and Camille Hopp earned a second team selection in the 50 freestyle. As always, Adair pushed her athletes in the classroom, helping 13 of her student-athletes to MPSF All-Academic recognition and a Scholar All-American team selection from the CSCAA. Adair guided a trio of swimmers to All-MPSF honors at the conclusion of the MPSF Championships in 2012-13. Camille Hopp, Rachel Dekar and Kjirsten Magnuson all took home second team honors. Hopp earned selections in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, setting a new LMU program record in the 200. Dekar earned her All-MPSF selection in the 100 breaststroke after setting a new LMU record in the event with a time of 1:02.36, while Magnuson took home the second team selection in the 100 backstroke. During her own 13-year swimming career, Adair set 35 National Age Group records including a 50m freestyle record that stood for 29 years. Competing in 12 National Championships (her first at age 13) and two Olympic Trials, Adair became a National finalist in the 100 free and 100 fly and a member of a 400-meter medley relay that established four American records. She attended UCLA as an undergraduate and then Loyola Law School. During law school, Adair was the assistant coach of the UCLA women's swim team and also coached the Team Santa Monica age group team. In 1979, Adair created the Santa Monica Masters Swim Team, which later became SCAQ - now the largest Masters program in the United States with over 900 active members. In her 30-plus years coaching, it is estimated that Adair has coached or instructed more than 20,000 Los Angeles-area swimmers. Between 1985 and 1994, Adair came out of swimming retirement to compete in several Masters National Championships and World Games and set national and world records in the freestyle sprint events and 100 and 200 IMs. She has contributed swimming articles to SWIM Magazine and Fitness Swimmer Magazine and was honored as the United States Masters Coach of the Year in 1997. From 1996-1999, Adair was the head coach of the men's and women's swimming teams at Santa Monica College, where she earned the Western State Conference Women's Coach of the Year award in 1997. In 1998, her women's team tied for the conference title and placed sixth in the state. Her men's team also earned a sixth place finish. Adair currently resides in West Los Angeles.

2013-14 MPSF CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW WEDNESDAY LMU swam a pair of relays on the first day of the MPSF Championships on Wednesday at East LA College. The Lions finished sixth in the 200 medley relay before placing seventh in the 800 freestyle relay. Kjirsten Magnuson, Rachel Dekar, Kailee Mora and Hannah Calton teamed for a 1:42.89 in the 200 medley relay, finishing just a few tenths of a second off the LMU record of 1:42.46. Calton, Kristen Clarno, Stephanie Horwitz and Angelina Prat swam for the Lions in the 800 freestyle, turning in a time of 7:28.66. THURSDAY Junior Kjirsten Magnuson broke Camille Hopp's existing freestyle record of 23.24 on Tuesday night at the MPSF Championships being contested at East LA College. The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho product swam a 23.22 in the preliminaries before improving the mark even further in the Championship Final on Thursday night with a 23.13 to claim third overall. Sophomore Kristen Clarno also reached the Championship final, placing eighth in the 200 IM with a season-best 2:04.09. Freshman Hannah Calton placed 11th in the same event, turning in a personal-best mark of 2:04.78 to claim the second-best time in LMU program history. The 200 IM record list got one more shake on Tuesday when Kristen Brennand took 19th overall in a personal-best time of 2:06.94 - the fifth-fastest time in LMU history. Stephanie Horwitz was the final Lion to make a move in the LMU top-10 lists, moving up to fourth all-time in the 500 freestyle after swimming a personal-best 5:01.17 to claim 18th overall. In addition to the changes in the record books, LMU also saw a number of personal-best swims on Tuesday, including career-bests from Sofia Abrate in the 200 IM, and Lauren Saylor, Kailee Mora, Kathleen Gore and Marlena Nip in the 50 freestyle. On the team front, LMU is currently just eight points out of sixth place, and just 25 points from the fifth-place team, University of Pacific. FRIDAY The LMU swimming team turned in a huge night on Friday at the MPSF Championships as four Lion records fell, including the oldest record on the books in the 100 backstroke set in 2007 by Lauren Mathewson. Kjirsten Magnuson, who broke the 50 freestyle program record yesterday, swam a perfect race to eclipse Mathewson's mark by .04, placing second in the race with a 54.90. Magnuson broke yet another program record 20 minutes later leading off LMU's 400 medley relay joined by Rachel Dekar (breaststroke), Hannah Calton (butterfly) and Kristen Clarno (freestyle). Their time of 3:45.25 sliced .8 off the previous record and placed fifth in the event. Clarno returned to the water to record her second record-breaking swim, this time doing so in the 400 Individual Medley. Clarno shattered the program record by 1.5 seconds, stopping the clock in 4:24.64 to win the Consolation final and place ninth overall in the event. Calton also had a double record day after breaking her own 100 butterfly record in the morning preliminaries with a 55.46, qualifying for the Championship final in which she placed seventh. Dekar, who set the LMU record in the 100 breaststroke at last year's MPSF Championships, placed fourth in the Championship final, a tenth of a second off her previous mark. Eleven Lions made it back into the evening finals - an all-time high for LMU swimmers in the very competitive MPSF Conference. Angelina Prat joined Clarno in the 400 IM, placing 20th, while Kailee Mora, Lise Soule and Kristen Brennand battled in the 100 butterfly Bonus Consolation en route to finishing 19th, 20th and 22nd. Stephanie Horwitz placed 20th in the 200 freestyle, and Mary Kate Reid won the Bonus Consolation in the 100 breaststroke in 17th place, followed by senior Marlena Nip in 23rd. Sofia Abrate rounded-out the Lions in the finals, placing 24th in the 100 backstroke. In the morning preliminaries, Kathleeen Gore achieved her second personal-best of the meet in the 100 butterfly (59.43), as did Lauren Saylor in the 200 freestyle (1:55.60). SATURDAY LMU closed the MPSF Championships on Saturday, sending 11 different swimmers into evening finals, including a pair to Championship Finals. Senior Rachel Dekar competed in the 200 breaststroke Championship Final while senior Angelina Prat took to the water in the 200 butterfly. Dekar finished seventh overall in the 200 breaststroke, turning in a time of 2:19.06 before Prat took sixth in the 200 butterfly in 2:04.33. Lise Soule had a great swim in the prelims of the 200 butterfly, stopping the clock in 2:06.38 to move into fifth on the LMU All-Time list.
