2014 PRESEASON POLL

The LMU baseball team swept a three-game WCC series with Portland last weekend to start WCC play…junior Colin Welmon tossed eight strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits and no walks while striking out six, as LMU took the opener on Friday night…Welmon, who improved to 3-1 with the victory, extended his consecutive quality start streak to six with the effort…LMU did the bulk of its offensive work in the second, scoring four times on four hits on Friday…freshman Ted Boeke delivered a two-RBI single in LMU’s six-run seventh inning as LMU recorded a comeback 10-8 victory over Portland on Saturday…the Lions rode two big innings to the win, scoring four times in the first before posting the six runs to erase what was an 8-4 deficit headed into the seventh…Boeke, a native of La Crescenta, Calif., finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI…freshman Austin Miller once again collected a multiple-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, a triple, and a RBI…on Sunday, junior Jimmy Jack collected the game-winning RBI-double with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning to score David Edwards and hand LMU the 8-7 walk-off victory over Portland…LMU held a 7-2 advantage headed into the ninth, but allowed five Pilot runs to make things interesting and set the table for the heroics in the bottom of the inning…

PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR CHEEK

Senior Tommy Cheek was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the week ending on March 16…Cheek batted .500 (9-for-18) over the course of four games played, collecting four runs scored, four RBI and a pair of doubles to the tune of a .500 on-base percentage and a .611 slugging percentage…for Cheek, the WCC Player of the Week honor is the second of his career (April 1, 2013)…the native of Escondido, Calif. collected multiple hits in all four games as LMU went 3-1, including posting a sweep of Portland to start WCC play…Cheek’s biggest game came on 3/15, where he finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI…in the three games against Portland, Cheek batted .500 (7-for-14) with three runs scored, two doubles and four RBI…

WALK IT OFF!

LMU has recorded two walk-off victories this year…junior Jimmy Jack collected the latest game-winnner on March 16 against Portland when he posted an RBI-double with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning to score David Edwards and hand LMU the 8-7 walk-off victory…Tanner Donnels had LMU’s first walk-off the year, singling in the bottom of the 13th to hand LMU a 12-11 walk-off victory over Cal State Northridge on March 5…LMU did not record a walk-off victory in 2013…

JIMMY WITH THE JACK

Junior Jimmy Jack, who has a perfect baseball name for a power hitter, got the Lions on the board in terms of home runs on March 2 against Utah, connecting on a homer in the third inning in LMU’s 322nd at bat of the year…LMU has now hit three home runs, as Jack hit another on March 8 against NKU before Tommy Cheek hit his first career homer on March 9 against the Norse…the 2013 LMU baseball squad managed its first home run of the year in its 1,469th at bat of the season when Colton Plaia hit a homer to left centerfield against BYU on May 2...LMU was the last Division I baseball team to hit a home run in 2013...the Lions finished 2013 with four home runs…prior to last year, LMU’s lowest home run total since 1968 was 12 home runs in 1971...

LATE INNINGS HURTING THE LIONS

Prior to LMU’s seven-game win streak from 3/1 – 3/9, LMU had lost six straight games…that streak didn’t exactly tell the entire story, as the Lions were tied or leading in each of the games over the streak headed into the sixth inning…LMU was outscored 31-4 in the sixth inning or later over that sixgame losing streak, as the bullpen registered a 9.53 ERA… looking at the entire year, LMU has only trailed entering the sixth inning in two of its games this year (3/11 at USC; 3/15 vs. Portland)…unfortunately the Lions are being outscored 61-42 in the sixth inning or later this year (63-38 lead in first five innings)…

LONG BEACH SHORT HOPS

Long Beach State enters the week sporting a 10-8 overall record after taking two-of-three from #16 Indiana in walkoff fashion…the Dirtbags walked-off on Friday and Sunday, and have now won seven of their last nine games overall… Johnny Bekakis leads the team offensively with a .345 batting average, eight runs scored and seven RBI…Ino Patron and Richard Prigatano are the team’s leading RBI-men, posting 15 and 14, respectively…Prigatano has also swiped six bases in seven attempts…right-hander Cody Marshall is scheduled to start on Tuesday, carrying a 1-0 record and a 2.08 ERA over three appearances and two starts…LBSU is led by fourthyear head coach Troy Buckley...

IT’S ANYBODY’S GAME

Fourteen of LMU’s 20 games this year have been decided by three runs or less, including five of LMU’s eight losses…the Lions are 3-3 in one-run games, 3-2 in two-run games and 3-0 in three-run games…LMU is also 1-1 in extra-inning affairs… Twelve of LMU’s last 15 games have been decided by three runs or less, including five one-run games...

PERSONAL Brenton Andrew Arriaga was born May 31, 1995 in Fontana, Calif... son of Karen Molina and Eleno Arriaga... father played basketball at Citrus College... has one brother, Cole... also considered Stanford, Santa Clara, and Washington, but chose LMU because of the great reputation of the baseball program, the campus’ great location, and academics... a psychology major.

THE YOUTH MOVEMENT

LMU brought in one of the best recruiting classes in the nation this year, and sixth-year head coach Jason Gill has wasted no time penciling it into this everyday lineup card…the Lions have five freshmen players who have started at least half of LMU’s games, including Austin Miller and David Fletcher who have started all 20…Tyler Cohen has started 14 games, while Ted Boeke and Cassidy Brown have each started 10, exactly half of LMU’s games…Miller (.384) and Boeke (.297) both sit in the top-five in terms of average for LMU this year, including Miller with the team-high average…in an unofficial poll of NCAA Division I baseball sports information directors, only six schools (including LMU) have 5+ freshmen starting half of their games…Austin Peay and George Washington are starting six, while Georgia Tech, Rhode Island and Ohio all have started five…LMU started a season-high six freshmen on 2/25 at UC Irvine (Fletcher – SS; Miller – CF; Cohen – 3B; Boeke – 1B; Brown – C; Hammond – LF)…the Lions have had seven freshmen on the field at once one time this year, as Tim Peabody took the mound in the fourth inning against UC Irvine with the starters behind him defensively…

LOTS OF HOME COOKING

Entering its 32nd season as the home of Lion baseball in 2014, George C. Page Stadium will also begin a new era of play the first season played under the lights…the 2014 LMU baseball schedule features 30 of its 52 games played at home, including 19 under the lights at Page Stadium…LMU is currently 11-5 at home this year, including 6-1 under the lights... the Lions did not play a non-conference road weekend series during the regular season this year, instead hosting Utah Valley, Northern Kentucky, and Oregon and Utah from the Pac12 Conference...the Lions, who have posted a 508-379-4 (.572) overall record in the park’s 31 seasons, have claimed five conference titles while calling Page Stadium home…the first Page Stadium conference title came in 1986, when the Lions posted a 24-8 record at home…the best record came in 1988, when LMU was 30-5 at home (.857)…

ONE FOR THE AGES

LMU’s 12-11 walk-off victory in 13 innings on March 5 over Cal State Northridge was a game for the ages…the contest lasted 5:40...LMU collected 24 hits, the most since collecting 24 against Saint Mary’s on April 12, 2008…the walk-off victory was the first for the Lions since May 20, 2012 when they walked off on Pepperdine with a 4-3 victory…Tanner Donnels went 6-for-6 with the game-tying RBI single in the 11th and the game-winner in the bottom of the 13th…Donnels’ six-hit game matched the LMU single-game record set by Travis Tarchione on April 15, 1987 against UNLV…the Lions also committed seven errors, tied for the most in a single game in LMU history (three other times | most recently 4/5/97 vs. Portland)…

DON’T GO WALKING OFF ON ME...AGAIN

The LMU baseball program suffered its first walk-off loss of the season on February 25 when UC Irvine scored once in the bottom of the 11th on a RBI-single from Evan Cassolato to claim a 3-2 victory…LMU has since recorded a walk-off of its own, beating Cal State Nothridge on March 5 with a single off the bat of Tanner Donnels in the 13th to earn a 1211 victory…the Lions suffered four walk-off losses last year... the first walk-off loss of 2013 came on March 1 at UNLV... Oklahoma State walked-off on the Lions twice, bookending a series on March 8 and 10...Pepperdine completed the agony with a walk-off on March 17...last year there was one walkoff home run (3/8 at Oklahoma State – Tanner Krietemeier), a walk-off double (3/1 at UNLV – Justin Jones), and two walkoff singles (3/10 at Oklahoma State – Zach Fish; 3/17 at Pepperdine – Drew Hacker)...

HEAD COACH

JASON GILL SIXTH SEASON AT LMU

136-147 Overall | 55-56 WCC 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Assistant Coach Guided LMU to WCC Championship Series in 2009 27 All-Conference Selections at LMU Nine Players Drafted from LMU Alma Mater | Cal State Fullerton, ‘96 Jason Gill enters his sixth year at the helm of the LMU baseball program in 2014. His incoming class for this season was tabbed as the 34th-best in the nation according to Collegiate Baseball. LMU was just one of four non-BCS schools to make the list, and just one of five private schools lauded. The class was also tied for the best in the West Coast Conference. The 2013 season saw the Lions finish with a 24-27 overall record, including a 12-12 mark in the WCC. Gill’s arsenal of talented pitchers finished the year with an LMU record 3.17 ERA, led by a trio of All-WCC selections in right-handers Colin Welmon, Aaron Griffin and Patrick McGrath (honorable mention). The Lions also featured the WCC Defensive Player of the Year in Colton Plaia and honorable mention selections in David Edwards, Zac Fujimoto and Cullen Mahoney. Gill led the baseball program to an even 27-27 overall record and a 14-10 mark in the WCC during the 2012 season. The conference record saw the Lions finish tied for third. In a year that saw the Lions earn the 23rd spot in Baseball America’s Top-25 recruiting classes, Gill helped his players to six All-WCC selections at the end of the season, including freshmen Trevor Megill and Colin Welmon as staples of the class. Reaching a coaching milestone, Gill earned his 100th career victory on April 20, 2012, a 5-3 victory over Portland. At the conclusion of the 2012 campaign, Gill spent the summer of 2012 serving as an assistant coach for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, guiding the squad to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal after finishing 5-2 at Honkbal Week hosted at Pim Mulier Stadium in the Netherlands. In 2011, Gill guided the Lions to their best overall record since 2004, posting a mark of 30-25. The Lions finished 11-10 in the West Coast Conference, earning a tie for third overall. The Lions began the year with a 7-1 record and closed the year by winning four of its last five games. Gill and his coaching staff also guided the LMU pitching staff to a 3.25 team ERA in 2011. The Lions placed five players on All-Conference teams, while four were taken in the MLB draft, including three in the first 12 rounds for the first time since 2005. The Lions finished the 2010 season with a 2333 overall record and a 5-16 mark in the WCC, placing eighth in the conference. Gill did lead his team to a series sweep over perennial powerhouse Cal State Fullerton, including a victory over then-No. 9 Fullerton on May 18,

and a series victory over Fresno State on the road. The 2010 season also culminated in the first All-American selection under Gill as a Head Coach, as 2010 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year Matt Lowenstein was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Ping!Baseball. LMU finished in second place in the WCC in 2009 after posting a 30-29 overall record and a 13-8 mark in conference play to earn a spot in the WCC Championship Series. The Lions’ 8-2 start in 2009 was the best since the 1988 season, and it was also the best start over the first 10 games for a first-year skipper in LMU program history. Gill’s 2009 squad finished the year with a 9-2 record against ranked opponents, including recording a four-game sweep of then-defending National Champion Fresno State and a crucial three-game sweep over WCC-foe San Diego. Proving they can play with any team in Southern California, widely considered one of the toughest regions in the country, LMU also knocked-off perennial powerhouses, then-No. 5 UC Irvine and sixth-ranked Cal State Fullerton, in 2009. Although those victories were highlights for LMU players and fans alike, they were likely even bigger for Gill, as he coached at both programs after taking the field as a player for the Titans in 1994. For the four years preceding his start as LMU’s seventh skipper in program history, Gill worked under head coach George Horton at Oregon and Cal State Fullerton, serving as an infield coach, recruiting coordinator and as a primary hitting instructor. Gill is no stranger to starting a program from the ground up, taking on the task twice, most recently at the University of Oregon. Gill was Horton’s first hire as both men left Cal State Fullerton to begin the reconstruction of the Duck baseball program in 2007. Always considered one of the best recruiters in college baseball, Gill’s 2007 recruiting class was ranked in the top10 in the nation by both Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America. In the three years preceding the move to Eugene, Ore., the Titans made it to Omaha and the College World Series twice, won two Big West Conference titles and had 35 players drafted. The three-year stint under Horton was Gill’s second on the Fullerton coaching staff, having started his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant for legendary skipper, and Division I baseball’s all-time winningest coach, Augie Garrido. In that first term, Gill served essential roles on both the 1995 National Championship and 1996 Fullerton squads.

Before his return to Fullerton, Gill spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for UC Irvine, as the coaching staff resurrected the baseball program from extinction. After just three years of developing the program, Gill helped lead UCI to a NCAA Regional in 2004. Furthering his reputation as a standout recruiter, the Anteaters’ 2002 recruiting class was ranked eighth in the country by Baseball America, with the following two classes among Collegiate Baseball’s top-30. Overall, Gill has served as a collegiate recruiting coordinator directly for seven years, recording six recruiting classes in the top-30 and two in the top-10 over that span. Prior to UCI, Gill was an assistant coach at Loyola Marymount where he helped guide the Lions to their most recent WCC titles and playoff berths in 1999 and 2000. Over that two-year span, nine LMU players moved on to professional baseball. Perhaps the most successful draft year in LMU history, Gill watched six of his Lion ballplayers sign professional contracts in 2000, including one player in each of the first three rounds.

COACHING EXPERIENCE: 2009-Present: 2012: 2008: 2005-07: 2001-04: 1999-00: 1997-98: 1995-96:

Coach Gill also served two years as an assistant coach at Nevada in 1997 and 1998. While there, the Wolfpack made the postseason for just the second time in school history. Serving as the team’s hitting coach and working closely with the infielders, Gill guided the 1997 team to nine offensive team records at Nevada. In addition, his tutelage of the infielders was instrumental in placing Nevada first in the country in double plays in both seasons. Before embarking on his coaching career, Gill played one year at Cal State Fullerton, hitting .345, scoring 28 runs and starting 43 games at third base as a senior. That year, the All-Big West Conference infielder helped the Titans to a 47-16 overall record and a College World Series berth. Gill started his collegiate career playing two seasons at Cuesta College before playing his junior campaign at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Overall, Coach Gill has been to Omaha four times as a player and a coach. In addition, he has been to the postseason a total of nine times, coached four Conference Players of the Year, including three infielders directly under his guidance, and been a part of six Conference Championships. A local product who prepped at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., Gill received his bachelor’s degree from Cal State Fullerton in kinesiology in 1996. Gill, who was born on April 7, 1970, lives with his wife, Kacey, and his son, Shane.
