LMU LIONS (0-0) VS #19 UC SANTA BARBARA GAUCHOS (0-0) February 16, 2017 | Page Stadium | Los Angeles, Calif. GAME 1 OF 53

HOME GAME 1 OF 27

LMU: Is picked to finish seventh in the WCC Preseason Coaches’ Poll ... is also picked seventh according to D1Baseball.com ... was scheduled to begin the year on the road, but rain forced the series from UCSB to LMU and moved the start date up to February 16 ... is 6-2 on Opening Day under ninth-year head coach Jason Gill ... is 6-2 in Opening Weekend series over that span (only losses against then-No. 7 UC Irvine in 2010 and #11 TCU in 2016) ... has played for the WCC Championship two of the last three years (losses to Pepperdine in 2014 and 2015) ... last earned a WCC Championship and NCAA berth in 2000.

PHIL CAULFIELD: Was picked as a preseason All-West Coast Conference selection.

IN 2016, LMU: Dropped 6 of its last 8 overall ... earned five All-WCC selections ... played just two extra-inning games (1-1) and just 21 home games (9-12) ... used 48 different batting lineups in 53 games ... began the year on the road for the first time since 2010 ... did not play a non-conference home weekend series ... was shut out seven times, including in consecutive games twice (2/20 - 2/21; 3/11 - 3/12) ... prior to 2016, LMU was last shut out in back-to-back games on February 9-10, 1985 ... managed four shutouts of its own ... scored a season-high 17 runs on 4/20 at CSU Bakersfield and followed that up with a 13-2 win on 4/25 in a Monday contest against Hawaii... drew 10 walks in the game vs. CSUB - the most since drawing 10 against Santa Clara on 4/22/06 ... six straight losses from 3/11 - 3/18 was the longest winless streak since dropping six straight from 2/18 - 3/1/14 ... averaged 2.17 runs per game and hit .202 over the losing streak ... played in front of a crowd of 1,037 in home opener on 2/23 vs. #21 USC - the largest home crowd since at least 1998.

GET OFF ON THE RIGHT PAW: The Lions have had a knack for coming out of the gates strong under head coach Jason Gill, going 6-2 on Opening Day during his tenure ... the Lions are 6-2 in Opening Weekend series over that span, with the only losses against then-No. 7 UC Irvine in 2010, and #11 TCU this year ... since 2000, LMU is 11-6 on Opening Day.

THIS WEEK: The 2017 baseball season begins a day early for LMU and #19 UC Santa Barbara,

as the two will clash on Thursday at Page Stadium ... the series was originally scheduled to begin on Friday in Santa Barbara, but rain in Southern California, teamed with LMU’s ability to play night games, has forced the location change ... the two team requested and were granted permission by the NCAA to begin the year a day early ... the Lions and Gauchos will play Thursday before taking Friday off with the expectation that rain will fall throughout the day ... the series will continue Saturday at 6 p.m. before concluding with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday ... should Saturday get rained out, the two teams will look to play a Sunday doubleheader with a tentative start time of 10 a.m. ... thanks to the new home series, LMU will play its first nine games of the year at Page ... the three-game series against UCSB will feature live stats at lmulions.com.

IT’S JUST A NUMBER: LMU is 32-42-1 against ranked-opponents under head coach Jason

Gill over his nine years as head coach ... the Lions are also 7-10 in weekend series over that span ... LMU went 2-7 against ranked-foes in 2016 ... the Lions went 1-4-1 in 2015 against such teams, with the lone victory coming in the series finale at #20 Arkansas on 3/8 ... LMU’s best record under Gill against ranked-teams came in his first year (2009) when the Lions went 9-2.

ABOUT #19 UCSB: UCSB enters the weekend series with LMU carrying a national ranking in every major preseason poll, including #19 according to Baseball America ... the Gauchos are picked to finish second in the always powerful Big West Conference after making a historic first-ever run to the College World Series in 2016 ...during that run, UCSB knocked off the No. 2 and No. 3 national seeds ... UCSB checked off a litany of program firsts en route to Omaha, winning its first-ever Regional, first Super Regional, and setting a new school record with 43 wins against Division I opponents ... the blue-and-gold will be led in 2017 by junior southpaw Kyle Nelson and junior shortstop Clay Fisher, who each earned Preseason All-America honors from various publications ... other key returners include first baseman Austin Bush, catchers Dempsey Grover and Sam Cohen, third baseman JJ Muno, and weekend starters Noah Davis and Joe Record ... that strong stable of returners will be augmented by an incoming recruiting class that was ranked No. 9 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball, the highest in program history ... Andrew Checketts is in his sixth season at the helm of the program ... his teams have gone 180-107-3 over his first five years. SURVEY SAYS: LMU was picked to finish seventh in the competitive West Coast Conference after a polling all 10 of the head coaches during the preseason ... San Diego, which received five of nine possible first-place votes, topped the conference poll, earning 77 points, while Gonzaga (three) and the Pepperdine (two) both earned at least one first-place vote.

GILL VITALS COACHING EXPERIENCE

AT LMU

2009-Present: 2016: 2012: 2008: 2005-07: 2001-04: 1999-00: 1997-98: 1995-96:

• Recorded 200th career victory on Opening Night of 2016 at #11 TCU as LMU beat Horned Frogs, 5-3 ... Earned his 100th career victory on April 20, 2012, a 5-3 victory over Portland. • Guided LMU to back-to-back WCC Championship Game appearances in 2014 and 2015 ... Gill also led his Lions to the 2009 Championship Series in his inaugural year. • Posted 33 victories in 2015 - the most for a Lion team since recording 40 in 2000 (40-19). • Saw a player selected in the sixth, seventh and eighth rounds of the 2015 MLB Draft, marking the first time since 2005 that LMU has had three players selected in the top-10 rounds.

BY THE NUMBERS (AS PLAYER OR COACH):

Postseason Appearances Conference Championships Trips to Omaha Conference Players of the Year Coached

• Helped freshsmen David Fletcher and Austin Miller to first team Freshman All-American honors in 2014 as they became the first LMU duo to be tabbed in the same year by Baseball America ... Fletcher also took home WCC Defensive Player of the Year in his freshman season, keeping the award with the Lions for the second straight year (Colton Plaia). • Gill’s 2013 arsenal of talented pitchers finish the year with an LMU record 3.17 ERA, led by a trio of All-WCC selections in right-handers Colin Welmon, Aaron Griffin and Patrick McGrath.

BY THE NUMBERS (AT LMU):

All-WCC Selections Players Drafted Freshmen All-Americans WCC Championship Games Reached WCC Freshmen of the Year WCC Defensive Players of Year ABCA All-West Region Selections

• Gill’s 2010 Lions recorded a series sweep over perennial powerhouse Cal State Fullerton, including a victory over then-No. 9 Fullerton on May 18, and a series victory over Fresno State on the road ... The 2010 season also culminated in the first All-American selection under Gill as a head coach, as 2010 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year Matt Lowenstein was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Ping!Baseball. • The Lions’ 8-2 start in 2009 was the best since the 1988 season, and it was also the best start over the first 10 games for a first-year skipper in LMU program history ... Gill’s 2009 squad finished the year with a 9-2 record against ranked-opponents, including recording a four-game sweep of then-defending National Champion Fresno State and a crucial three-game sweep over WCC-foe San Diego ... Proving they can play with any team in Southern California, widely considered one of the toughest regions in the country, LMU also knocked-off perennial powerhouses, then-No. 5 UC Irvine and sixth-ranked Cal State Fullerton, in 2009.

MAJOR LEAGUERS WHO HAVE PLAYED UNDER GILL

TEAM USA

• Prior to returning to LMU for the 2017 season, Gill spent the summer of 2016 serving his second stint with Team USA’s Collegiate National Team ... The 2016 Americans posted an 11-7-1 record, including recording the first-ever series win at Cuba (3-2) ... For their efforts, the Collegiate National Team was named USA Baseball’s Team of the Year ... At the conclusion of the 2012 campaign, Gill spent the summer of 2012 serving as an assistant coach for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, helping the squad to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal after finishing 5-2 at Honkbal Week hosted at Pim Mulier Stadium in the Netherlands. PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE

• For the four years preceding his start as LMU’s seventh skipper in program history, Gill worked under head coach George Horton at Oregon and Cal State Fullerton, serving as an infield coach, recruiting coordinator and as a primary hitting instructor ... Gill was Horton’s first hire as both men left Cal State Fullerton to begin the reconstruction of the Duck baseball program in 2007 ... Always considered one of the best recruiters in college baseball, Gill’s 2007 recruiting class was ranked in the top-10 in the nation by both Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America. • In the three years preceding the move to Eugene, Ore., the Titans made it to Omaha and the College World Series twice, won two Big West Conference titles and had 35 players drafted ... The three-year stint under Horton was Gill’s second on the Fullerton coaching staff, having started his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant for legendary skipper, and Division I baseball’s all-time winningest coach, Augie Garrido ... In that first term, Gill served essential roles on both the 1995 National Championship and 1996 Fullerton squads.

LMU CAREER COACHING RECORDS (SINCE 1968)

• Before his return to Fullerton, Gill spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for UC Irvine, as the coaching staff resurrected the baseball program from extinction ... After just three years of developing the program, Gill helped lead UCI to a NCAA Regional in 2004 ... Furthering his reputation as a standout recruiter, the Anteaters’ 2002 recruiting class was ranked eighth in the country by Baseball America, with the following two classes among Collegiate Baseball’s top-30.

COACH

Al Gad Marv Wood Dave Snow Chris Smith Jody Robinson Frank Cruz Jason Gill

• Prior to UCI, Gill was an assistant coach at LMU where he helped guide the Lions to their most recent WCC titles and playoff berths in 1999 and 2000 ... Perhaps the most successful draft year in LMU history, Gill watched six of his Lion ballplayers sign professional contracts in 2000, including one player in each of the first three rounds.

Totals

• Coach Gill also served two years as an assistant coach at Nevada in 1997 and 1998, where the Wolfpack made the postseason for just the second time in school history.
