Lancaster County is many things. Of course, it’s the home of the Amish, a place where you can see horse-drawn buggies rolling through bucolic farmland. But the county also contains a bustling city, with quirky shops, galleries, nightclubs and nationally renowned restaurants. Lancaster was once known as the “Munich of America” and has recently seen that brewing heritage revived in the thriving craft beer scene. And shoppers have plenty to do here. whether they’re interested in outlet malls or antiques dealers. For families or foodies; craft beer fans or history buffs; shoppers or music lovers, Lancaster County is a great place to visit. Thanks for joining us!

Local Picks DONUTS BY VICTORIA BOSTWICK
With its Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, Lancaster has a long tradition of local bakeries that produce delectable pies, fresh breads and sweet treats — especially donuts. Here are a few of my favorite spots to grab donuts while you are in the area.
Shady Maple
When you walk into the southeastern doors of Lancaster Central Market you will immediately be greeted by the wall of donuts at Shady Maple’s stand. The sight is as sweet as the smell. They have long johns, classic donuts, specialty donuts and even donuts for pets. My favorite is a lemon powdered donut, as I am a fiend for all things lemon.
Achenbach’s
When people learn that I live near Leola, the first question I get is, “Have you been to Achenbach’s?” Every local knows that Achenbach’s is “the home of the long john,” an éclair-shaped, yeasty treat cloaked in icing or glaze. When I asked the woman behind the counter what the most popular long john flavor was, she said vanilla. However, the customer standing beside me exclaimed, “chocolate and peanut butter!” I would have to say that both are my favorite. Achenbach’s is celebrating 67 years in business and it is no surprise as to why, with their undisputed reputation of selling the best long johns in town.
Byers Butterflake Bakery
Visiting Byers Butterflake Bakery during Easter is like walking into an Easter basket. The shop is full of Easterthemed decor and candy-colored treats. While Byers’ year-round treats include many pastries beyond donuts, their glazed stuffed donuts are my favorites. Byers is perfect for your morning donut stop or as your go-to bakery for all your special occasions.
Beiler’s
Immediately upon walking into Beiler’s you are welcomed by their colorful array of donuts. They have every kind of specialty donut flavor imaginable, from chocolate covered strawberry to maple bacon. They offer classic flavors as well, but it is hard not to choose one of the more unusual options. My favorites are their key lime donuts and apple fritters (one of their most popular treats). The key lime donut is lightly sweet, and the icing is fluffy and smooth. The apple fritters are packed with rich flavor and chunks of fresh apple. One thing that makes this shop so special is that you can watch the staff create these delicious donuts right in front of you.

Favorite Produce Stands
We take produce very seriously here in Lancaster County. From industrial-size farms to roadside stands, Lancaster has everything. Ask a local which farm stand is their favorite and you’ll likely get a response that goes something like, “Well, that depends on what I’m buying.” In that vein, here is a list of personal favorite farm stands in Lancaster County and the items I love most at each one. live oil is a bit like fine wine. With over 1,000 varietals of olives, each with a unique flavor profile, the choices are endless and no two are alike. “Most people don’t know there are so many different types of olive oils,” says Soraya Aguilar Balshi, who along with husband Tim owns Seasons Olive Oil and Vinegar Taproom in Lancaster, where they offer more than 50 of the world’s freshest extra virgin olive oils and aged balsamic vinegars on tap. The couple owns an award-winning olive oil mill in Spain that mills every extra virgin olive oil to their exacting specifications and imports directly to their stores, where they are available to the public for tasting - and purchase - every day. The Balshis also view their store as an education center, where they can share the history of olive oil and its health benefits, the production process, their connections
with farmers, and the qualities that make each olive oil unique and different. For those who want a more in-depth experience, Seasons offers private tastings once a week by appointment for groups of 6 to 15. These private events are perfect for a gathering of friends or family, corporate team building, a book club or even a bridal shower. Seasons’ store manager offers a customized experience for the group, along with recipes for using selected products. Groups are welcome to bring their own wine and food. Or they can choose from the selection of pantry items available in the store, including crackers, specialty chutneys, tapenades, olives, risottos and pastas. “It’s a great bonding experience,” Soraya says. It’s also an opportunity to sample the newest products available at the store. To schedule a private tasting party, call 717-396-1380 or email lancaster@seasonstaproom.com.

The Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre has come a long way since founders Tom and Deborah Prather designed plans for the theater on a napkin at Denny’s back in the 1980s. Now 35 years since its first opening night, the Dutch Apple is still going strong. Under the guidance of Tom and Deborah’s sons, Will and David, and a dedicated staff, the theater continues to serve up a menu of Broadway-worthy musicals, plays, concerts and children’s theater, along with an all-American dining experience, to over 150,000 guests each year. In 2022, the Dutch Apple stage will present “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Rock of Ages,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Chicago,” “Saturday Night Fever” and “Elf the Musical.” The theater will also feature tribute concerts, such as Neil Diamond and The Highwaymen, as well as children theater shows, including “How I Became a Pirate” and “Madagascar the Musical.” They also offer a summer theater camp program and workshops for kids. All matinees, Sunday twilight performances and Tuesday and Wednesday evening shows include a specially curated buffet with a full salad bar and a selection of entrees, side dishes and desserts. Friday and Saturday evening shows feature the prime rib buffet. On Thursdays, enjoy a plated, four-course served dinner of soup, salad, entrée and dessert. Each show also has a cocktail menu created to complement the show. The Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre is located at 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster. Regular business hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Sunday. For more information, visit dutchapple.com or call the box office at 717-898-1900.

Ask a Local BEERCATION DESTINATION STORY AND PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY ANDREW ALBRIGHT
Lancaster has over 300 years of history and the tradition of breweries began in the back rooms of inns and taverns throughout the city and towns of the county. In 2022, if you like beer, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve picked a few top breweries (in alphabetical order) in my short list, however you can explore many others in the entire checklist. Cheers!
BESPOKE — Located next to the Strasburg Railroad which is used for their overflow parking lot. They’re one of the newbies in my list and have a small taproom and limited hours, but they’re brewing some liquid gold. Field Day is a nice Pale Ale. Hoppenstance is a must try as well. Their food selection is limited. MAD CHEF — Located in East Petersburg. What I truly love about Mad Chef is there is no other distribution channel. Only in their taproom can you experience their selection. My go-to is F-18. Hoppy without the bitterness. Food is great, but do yourself a favor, get the fries! RURAL CITY BEER CO. — This brand new brewery was a pleasant surprise for me. Located in Reamstown and housed in a 1911 hardware store. Their drafts range mostly around 5-7% ABV. I’d suggest It Takes A Village — it’s juicy and smooth. Chopper is a sweet and waming American Maple Brown Ale. For food, they offer a nice selection. The charcuterie board was well-plated and had a wide variety of treats. SPRING HOUSE — Three locations to choose from. Two in Lancaster and a new tavern in Strasburg. You can’t go wrong. Daily Planet is a year-rounder and a crowd pleaser. I wish they’d bring back Seven Gates Pale Ale (hint, hint). Food menus vary by location. ST. BONIFACE — If you’re in Ephrata for the day, this is another must stop location. 3LB IPA is a tasty sipper and even heavier is Libation DIPA. Whatever you try, you shouldn’t be disappointed. Did I mention food? Fabulous selection to chase down with your beer.

Ask a Local COVERED BRIDGE EXCURSION BY ALEXIS WITGENSTEIN
Walking or riding through Lancaster County’s historic covered bridges is a quintessential local activity. Often referred to as “kissing bridges”, the legend is that these structures were enjoyed by couples who would stroll under them and sneak a kiss while on a date. Our favorite covered bridge tours are the Lititz and Countryside tour and the Historic River Towns tour because of the variety of places to stop for a bite to eat, to grab a drink, or to just take a moment to enjoy the views.
The Lititz and Countryside Route There are many tours that will take you through these historic bridges, but the “tastiest” tour starts north of Lancaster. The Lititz and Countryside driving tour includes four covered bridges, all originally built during the 1800s. The first bridge is Hunsicker’s covered bridge and at 180 feet long is the longest covered bridge in the county. The next bridges are the Pinetown covered bridge and Wenger’s Mill covered bridge. These two bridges were damaged by Hurricane Agnes in 1972. Amish workers rebuilt the Pinetown Bridge in the following spring The Lititz and Countryside driving tour also passes through Lititz, where you can take a stroll and explore cool shops and have a bite to eat at the renowned Bull’s Head Public House. We suggest trying their sour ales, along with their chipotle wing appetizer. If you have children along, stop at the Wilbur Chocolate store for classic Wilbur buds and a variety of other chocolates. You can also walk through The Market at Wilbur, which was recently built inside of Wilbur Chocolate’s old factory.

We suggest stopping by Oola Bowl’s stand and trying their specialty “Wilbur Bowl” featuring Nutella on acai, topped with Wilbur buds. After satisfying your sweet tooth, head over to Julius Sturgis’s Pretzel Bakery for a hands-on tutorial on pretzel twisting. Enjoy savory samples and pick up some pretzels to take Lancaster’s favorite snack home. To get the map for this route use this QR Code.
Covered Bridge Classic Bike Ride The Covered Bridge Classic is a bike ride now in its 43rd year that takes you on a route through the scenic Amish countryside. You have the option to ride 35 miles, which includes five covered bridges, 65 miles, which includes eight covered bridges, or the full 100 miles, featuring a total of 14 covered bridges. There are up to seven rest stop locations depending on the length of your chosen route. Registration starts in April this year, and costs $45 to participate. To register, go to coveredbridgeclassic.com/register.
SPRING 2022
Historic River Towns and Western Villages Route One of the more scenic covered bridge tours is the Historic River Towns and Western Villages tour, which features five covered bridges. This tour takes you through the towns of Columbia, Mount Joy and Manheim, which are in the western part of the county. The tour starts in Columbia, just along the Susquehanna River. Fuel yourself for the tour by stopping at a new local favorite café, Coffee and Cream. They serve great coffee, breakfast, lunch, smoothies, and snacks. We suggest grabbing an iced Achenbach long john donut while you’re there. Enjoy your meal or snack outside and gaze at the Susquehanna. From here you can stroll through the Columbia Market, which is open on the weekends. Pick up some of the freshest produce and baked goods in the area to enjoy on the rest of the tour or take home. While in Columbia, you will travel through Forry’s Mill covered bridge, which was built in 1869, and Siegrists’ Mill covered bridge, which was built in 1885. After soaking up Columbia’s heritage and the scenic Susquehanna, we suggest taking a pit stop for lunch on the way to Mount Joy at McCleary’s Pub, which is also just at the edge of the Susquehanna. Here you will find some great Irish fare
SPRING 2022
and a wide selection of beer. We find that an order of their mild wings and a pint of the Guinness pair wonderfully. In Mount Joy you can take a tour of Bube’s Brewery which originated in the 19th century. One unique feature of Bube’s Brewery is the option to eat and drink at a variety of their own restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy a meal in their outside Biergarten, or at Alois, which is in a Victorianstyle hotel, or the stone-lined catacombs where you will descend 43 feet for a candlelight dining experience. Next you will visit three more bridges, the first being Shenck’s Mill bridge, built in 1847. The second is Kauffman’s Distillery bridge, built in 1857, and the third is Shearer’s Mill bridge, built in 1847. Before ending your tour in Manheim, you also have the option to stop at the Mount Hope Winery and Estate where you can participate in wine tasting, shop in their wine shop, and learn about their long history. To get the map for this route use this QR Code.
