Smooth Move Tips and Tricks - Check Your Insurance Policy Tip

1

o Ask your Insurance Company if the mover breaks your TV, who pays for it? o Ask the moving company to explain its insurance policy ahead of time. o Many movers’ insurance policies use weight to value your stuff, for example, the policy might reimburse you for 50 cents per pound of damaged goods. Meaning you’re expensive but lightweight TV won’t be fully covered. o

If the mover’s liability policy won’t cover your stuff check your rental or homeowners insurance policy. Many policies cover moving.

o Purchase higher coverage insurance through your mover or choose another moving company. Other Questions: (Ask Insurance Company about other sensitive or precious items.) o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ o ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Tip

7 Steps to Choosing a Moving Company

2

A. Get Referrals  Start by asking friends, family members and coworkers if they can recommend a moving company.  Consider reading the YourTeam Discount section where you can take get VIP rates through Budget - United – National & PODs.

B. Follow the Rule of Threes    

Don’t settle for the first estimate you receive, get at least three different in-person estimates. Make sure your estimates are in writing. Movers must have the right equipment, training and experience. A mover, no matter how large or small, should be able to provide recent references for home sellers with a similar volume of goods to transport.

C. Watch Out for Red Flags  If the mover demands money upfront, it might not be a legitimate business. During the estimate, note the professionalism of the mover.  If they show up late, seem unsure of their abilities, or can’t answer your questions, consider looking for another company. Be wary of any movers who show up in a rented moving van

D. Make Sure the Mover Is Licensed and Insured  If your products are damaged – who is responsible for the damages, the movers or your insurance? Do not choose a mover that is not licensed E. Contact the Better Business Bureau: www.bbb.org or Phone: 519-673-3222 F. Verify the Address  Ask for a business card or pull up the mover’s website  Look up the listed address online or through the phonebook  Make sure the moving company’s address is listed and registered under the company names  Be wary of any address listed under a residential name

Do a Pre-Packing Walkthrough – Document your belongings Tip

3

o Consider documenting what you have (at least the valuables) before you pack anything. Use your phone to take pictures and or videos of your valuable items while they are working. This is to demonstrate that they are in working order, so you will have proof, should anything break or chip in transit. o Get close-ups of serial and model numbers or other identifying details o Keep at least one copy of all of this documentation somewhere outside of your home—a cloud-based (online) storage service is a good option. This way you’ll always have a backup copy if you lose or can’t access the original. We suggest Google Drive where you receive 10 gigabytes Free.

Use Your Excess - Move with Less Tip

4

o If you stockpile household goods and toiletries such as toilet paper or shampoo o Start using up the excess now so you’ll have less to bring with you o If you run out, buy a smaller size to get you through the move.

10

Century21 Percy Fulton #1 Team in Ontario

De-Clutter Before Moving Day Tip

5

This helps keep moving day as inexpensive and stress-free as possible, o De-clutter your belongings before you start packing o Set a limit for shoes and clothing per person o Assess things you have not used in 6-12 months o Watch for duplicate items – sheets – plates – utensils – tools – sell or donate duplicate items

Tip

6

Start a Necessities Box o Small personal and valuable things should go with you – not with the moving company These are things you’ll need the day you move in such as: o medication o toilet paper o flashlight o a box cutter or scissors o sheets, towels o Mark the box “Necessities” and keep it in your vehicle with you during your move. o Once you’re in the new place, you only have to open your necessities box to find everything you need on your first night in your new home. o You will have all your essentials and nothing will go missing.

Century21 Percy Fulton #1 Team in Ontario

11

Tip

7

The Vacation/Survivor Strategy o Pack yourself a bag as though you were going on a week’s vacation o Fill it with the clothing and toiletries you’ll need to get through the first week o Don’t forget medication, a basic first aid kit, backup eyeglasses and contacts o If you’re moving with an infant diapers and baby gear o Pack a “Basic’s Box” for each room in the house o Fill a bedding box for each bedroom: sheets, pillows, comforters and, for those in need, bedtime toys o Bathrooms will need toilet paper, bath towels ,mats, a shower curtain, soap, garbage can and a plunger o Let the kids fill a box with the personal items that make their rooms feel like home: posters, toys, photos, books. o Vacation Survivor Boxes are amongst the first you can open. To be prepared for your first few days.

Number your boxes on a 1 to 10 scale to prioritize essentials Tip

8

o Label Boxes on a scale of#1 -#10 (most important to least important)

o When you arrive at your new place you’ll be able to open your most important boxes 1st and be able to save time by not having to search for essentials.

12

Century21 Percy Fulton #1 Team in Ontario

Tip

Use Three Boxes for sorting as you pack

9

Tip

o For every room you tackle, bring three boxes o Stuff you’ll keep o Stuff to throw away o Stuff to donate or sell o Check for duplicate items o If you have not worn something in a year – what are the chances you will after the move?

10

Use everyday items as packing material Instead of painstakingly wrapping each dinner dish in newsprint or bubble wrap o Buy one bag of Styrofoam plates & alternate stacking the real plates with the disposables. Using the disposable plates after unpacking will cut down on waste and work. o Use sheets & towels as packing materials. o Use older sheets as an extra layer of protection around your mattress, or furniture etc.

Bag your clothes: o Pull up a garbage around a cluster of your hanging clothes o Tie/tape the bag at the top end & use rubber bands to keep hangers secure And easy to move. o Label the outside of each bag.

Tip

11

Priceless Tips for Moving Your Valuables

13

Flatware o Loose silverware is a pain to sort out during unpacking and can damage fragile items in shared boxes o Start by sorting your silverware according to type o Wrap each type with a rubber band or piece of string o Place all the silverware in a shoebox and tape the box closed Pots and Pans o To find the right box for your pots and pans o Grab your biggest pan and place it into a box both horizontally and diagonally. If you can close the lid securely, the box will work; if not, try a larger box o Select the right size box, stack your pots and place them in the box o Once the pots are in, wrap glass lids with thin packing paper and place them underneath the handles of the pans. Food o Packing is a great time to de clutter your pantry o Sort through the items and toss out anything past the expiration date o Any unopened, unwanted food can be donated to a local food bank o For the food you want to keep, use plastic grocery totes or bags

14

Century21 Percy Fulton #1 Team in Ontario

Create an Inventory Documenting everything you have may not be worth your time o Make notes and taking photographs of your more meaningful possessions o Should anything go wrong, it’s easier to make a claim against your homeowner’s insurance, or the moving company’s, if you have documentation of the original state. This should fit in easily with your pre-move organizing. Get Insurance o For anything that goes on a truck, make sure it’s covered by insurance o Your homeowner’s insurance may cover a move. o Some moving companies might offer extra insurance

Invest in the Right Boxes o Special flat-screen TV boxes have padding to keep the screen safe o The $20 or so might seem expensive for a box, but that’s cheaper than buying a new $1,000 television o The same goes for stemware & glassware o There are specialty boxes for all sorts of items.

Tape Paintings o Tape helps keep glass from shattering Put a big X with masking or painter’s tape on anything under glass to stop pictures from moving. Use a FRAGILE sticker to clearly mark the box.

Box It up Right o With any box, but especially one containing fragile things o Gently shake it as you pack to make sure the contents don’t move o If they do, add more padding o Also, don’t just fold over the box tops — tape them o Make sure to fill the box so the top can’t cave in. 15

Moving Tips to Help Your Child through the Big Move Tip

12

Communicate Your Move o After you decide to move, one of the first things you should do is: o Call a family meeting o Order your favourite takeout and break the news. o Explain to your children why you are moving o Encourage them to express themselves about the move o Ease their concerns by showing them pictures of their new room and the house o They may get excited to learn they no longer have to share a bedroom or get to pick the color of their next room Make a Map o Use an online map showing your new home and it’s area o Circle or identify points of interest like your child’s new school, parks and playgrounds. Research and Visit Schools o Research the new school and its surroundings to help ease your children’s concerns. o Try to arrange a visit to the school so that your children can meet teachers and their new classmates before they officially start Get Your Children Involved o Make your children part of the moving process. Let them pack some of their own things that they will want to open. o This can also be a good time to have your children pick the toys and keepsakes to they want to keep the most. “See You Soon” Party You may want to make sure your children know that good-bye doesn’t mean forever. o Arrange a “See You Soon Party” instead of Good-bye for your children. o Exchange email addresses and phone numbers. o Helping your child maintain old relationships can help them as they adjust to their new surroundings. 16

Preparing Your Pets for the Big Move Tip

13

o Maintain your pet’s regular routine right up until the moment you leave o If they’re accustomed to a morning walk, make sure you take it Whether your travels are just a few hours or several days o Keep them on their normal diet with their regular food A common mistake made by pet owners is to bring special treats as comfort food. This often leads to nausea or diarrhea for the pet o Bottom line when preparing your pet for a move: Stay the course and go with what’s familiar and customary. o When you move to a new place, you want to bring every member of your household, including your pets Pets can be sensitive to moving and need a smooth transition o Whether you are moving across the country or just to the other side of town, you will want to ensure you pets have a comfortable move to your new home Don’t Just Ditch the Fish o Tanks contain their own ecosystems, including bacteria o Put the fish in a separate container, but keep some of the water the fish are accustomed to o You retain the original bacteria colony when you establish their new home in your new home; the fish are not shocked by the new water

Moving Your Pets Things to Consider Before You Move Your Pet: o o o o

Ensure that your pet’s medical records are up-to-date. Bring copies of your pet’s medical records with you. Purchase a sturdy, comfortable transport carrier if needed. Prepare a travel bag with food, medicine, water and other essentials your pet will need.

17

Century21 Percy Fulton #1 Team in Ontario

Tips for Driving With Pets o Cats should always be kept in a carrier during auto travel o With dogs you have the option of using a restraining harness, available in most pet supply stores o Make sure to stop frequently to allow your pet to exercise and relieve itself (a good rule of thumb is to pull over every two hours) o Cats can benefit from the use of a harness and a litter box on long trips o Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car o Never travel with a pet in the cargo area of a moving truck or van o This is especially true during the hot summer months, when the temperature in your car can rise to deadly temperatures Tips for Flying with Pets o Make your flight arrangements far in advance o Many airlines have restrictions on the total number of pets allowed onboard any one flight o You may also be surprised to find that some airlines don’t allow pets o Expect to pay a fee for your pet’s travel accommodations o Find out any restrictions that may apply in advance of booking o Ask if you’ll be able to bring your pet onboard as a carry-on o This is preferable to checking your pet into the cargo hold of the plane o Plan to visit your veterinarian within 30 days prior to your flight Most airlines require an up-to-date health certificate o Different countries and states may also have their own requirements, so make sure to check with the proper authorities before your trip 18

Finally you’ve moved in, now what? : Systematic Unpacking Tip

Kitchen as Command Post

14

o You know how everyone winds up in the kitchen during a party? Make the new kitchen the cozy nexus of your evolving home o Pack a box of kitchen essentials – a few pots and pans, dishes and utensils, the tea pot, a trash can and liners, cleaning products and, if you use it a lot, your microwave o Use the kitchen as the command center of your new home while you unpack and get used to your new home

Tip

Order of unpacking

15

Unpacking the Kitchen o Once the kitchen is unpacked and set up enough to function. o It can become a port where everyone can congregate and take a break/relax. o Resist the urge to unpack everything in the kitchen right away. o Instead, start with the essentials. o Leave less frequently used items in boxes until you decide what will go where.

Unpacking the Bathroom o Next, tackle the bathroom. o If you have children, consider unpacking a bathroom that can be used as a communal bathroom, otherwise, unpack the master bath. o Make sure the plumbing works — you may need to turn on the water main. o Put the toiletries in place.

19

Century21 Percy Fulton #1 Team in Ontario

The Living Room o Once the kitchen and the bathroom are operational, the rest of the unpacking can proceed without urgency. Shift your focus to the living room or family room o Before you begin unpacking or moving furniture take a moment to sketch the room and draw how you want to place your furniture It’s much easier to erase and resketch a rectangle that represents the couch than it is to lift and move furniture around the room.

The Bedroom’s o If you don’t get to the bedrooms on the first night, don’t be upset, Drag mattresses and pillows together in one room and have a family camp-out. It will add to the sense of adventure. o Share the burden of assembling the beds and moving heavy furniture o Allow each bedroom dweller to unpack and arrange their belongings o Professional movers will reassemble any beds that were taken apart o Unpacking after you move may seem like another in a long series of huge moving-day tasks. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming if you take your time and make it fun. It’s also one more great opportunity to evaluate your belongings to see whether more items can be donated to charity.
