-LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

getting personal

The magazine industry has always been a passion of mine. I become absolutely captivated when I read, write, and research. For example, when I began researching our cover girl, Ashley Rosales, I spent hours and hours combing through her blog, Smashed Avocados. Check out the cover story on pag 40 to fall in love with her just as we have.

Hi, y’all. Now that I have offically been the editor here at NYLON for a few months, I figured that it was about time I gave you a rundown on myself.

Also in this issue, incredible artists such as Victor + Alexander, Katie Smith, and Xinyue Wang allow us to enter their creative worlds (pages 30-39). Then on page 49, former Face Off contestant Eddie Holecko gives us the details on life as an artist after his big TV break. And we bring this upbeat issue to a close with a rundown on the essentials for a fantastic summer day.

Since this is my first issue, I hope to learn and grow with all of you. I believe we have offered a great issue that covers the best of the best for fashion, beauty, culture, and incredible featured individuals. Thanks a million to all the lovely people who helped make this publication possible. Y’all kick ass!

-BEHIND THE SCENES

just smashing

Ashley Rosales is a 4’9” ball of fire. One second she is dancing like a maniac and the next she is talking you through an intense heart-to-heart. This gal is definitely a force to be reckoned with. After interning in L.A. and studying abroad in Hong Kong, this fashion guru has morphed into something that the world hadn’t seen before. NYLON was drawn to her versatility. For our cover, shot by Paige MacCready at Drayton Towers in Savannah, GA, we played on Ashley’s kickass raven-like hair and tanned complexion by styling her in neon dresses, bright blazers, and distressed jeans. Our makeup artist Hana Hyman made Ashley’s eyes pop with an intense aquamarine duochrome smokey eye combination paired with a bright pink and orange ombre lip. We kept the hair glossy with delicate waves, perfect for a summer beach party. Getting this chick ready was a blast and a half. Check out her entire story on page 40 to delve deeper into this lady’s incredible mind.

I was a huge fan of Anna [Kendrick] when she was first on Twilight but the minute she hit the stage in Pitch Perfect, she bcame my new idol. There is a great difference between her two roles but she absolutely nailed both of them. So, when she was your latest cover girl, I lost it. Great pick! SARA MURPHY VIA EMAIL

make-up mutli-tasking

Isn’t it such a great feeling when you realize that skirt you’ve had forever goes perfectly with a blazer you couldn’t previously find a mate for, and now it’s like, best outfit ever? This is like that. Old problems, same stuff, new solutions.

2 Conditioner makes for a seriously smooth shave. Find a super nourishing one, but remember, you’re removing the hair it’s treating, so there’s no need to break the bank.

1 Did you know that any lipstick can be used as

a blush? Yes, any. Not just the “creamy” ones the beauty gurus showed you. It’s all about how you do it. Most of us already know how to make cheap eyeliner work for us -- run a lighter over the point. This heat makes it easier to draw and blend with. The same principle is to be applied in this lesson as well, but you won’t need a lighter. Gently rub the lipstick on the back of your hand. I emphasize gently because firm pressure can snap that lipstick bullet in two. You don’t need much on your hand to get gorgeous cheeks. Next, pull out a small stipple brush, like this super affordable but awesome one from E.L.F. ($3 at Target). Tap it on the lipstick you’ve got on your hand and lightly swirl it onto your cheeks. Apply to the apples of your cheeks for a fresh and awake look, or above the cheekbone for a sleeker style. Matte lipsticks need to be applied more quickly and will leave a matte finish, just as satin lipsticks will leave a satin finish. If you have spot-prone or oily skin, avoid those balmlipstick hybrids. They will likely end up looking smeared on your skin and/or break you out. If you have normal to dry skin, however, it will look dewy.

I recommend L’Oreal Paris Hair Expertise EverCreme Intense Nourishing Conditioner. Not only is it inexpensive at about $6 (also at Target), but it’s also paraben-, sulfate-, and phthalate-free and 100% vegan. Oh, and it smells like vanilla, and while that isn’t a scent I particularly enjoy for my hair, I most certainly don’t mind the rest of my body smelling like dessert. Basically, this conditioner gives you way more than any shaving creams you’ll find, and it’s cheaper than most per ounce.

your eyeshadow to really pop, and your 3 Want eyeshadow primer just isn’t helping enough?

Or, do you struggle with eyeshadow fallout frustrations? Problem: solved. Use your eyeliner as a base. The creamier the liner the better, so I strongly recommend Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils ($20 at Sephora). Work quickly, as eyeliner does set. Adding shadow while the liner is still tacky will be way more effective. Try to match the colors of your shadow and liner relatively closely, unless you’re going for a dimensional, or as it’s known in the industry, duochrome shadow effect. Duochrome means that the pigments create a color shift with the aid of light and movement, almost like iridescence. If duochrome sounds sweet to you...

layering your eyeshadow for a duochrome 4 Try effect. Layering two differently colored

shimmery shadows will create a positively stunning iridescence that will capture light, and attention from those around you. Urban Decay’s eyeshadow in Loaded ($18) topped with their Moondust eyeshadow in Solstice ($20) is quite possibly the best thing ever.

don’t bash your eyeshadow primer just 5 5.yet!ButIt still has a great deal of power in it.

Stubborn spots just won’t stay concealed? Girl, I’ve got you. First, use SPF, moisturizer, and your usual face primer. Go ahead and apply foundation all over, and then put a teeny tiny dot of eyeshadow primer just on the spot before you apply concealer on it. I like NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base for this because it’s a bit thicker and smoother than eyeshadow primers from other brands, traits you want when you’re dealing with something that might be of uneven topology and oozy. Not to be totally gross or anything… Anyways, when you do use concealer, you want to just press it on and blend out the edges, just like you would when you pack on eyeshadow all over the lid. Then, just dust powder over and you’re good to go. Lately, we’ve all been hearing about a lot of “must-have” new products that do multiple jobs, but the truth is, just about everything you have can be used in a variety of ways with awesome results. If you have your own multitasking hacks like these, let us know! We’d love to give them a try.

sunny dispostion In these warmer months, wearing SPF becomes increasingly important as we are more likely to spend time in the sun. Here’s a few tips and notes regarding SPF.

UVB causes sunburn, and UVA has more long-term damaging effects on the skin, like premature aging. So, you need sunscreen that protects you from both.

SPF 15 and higher is likely to cause a white cast in photos taken with flash. So, if you’re having photos taken, especially at night, be wary that you may glow a bit more brightly than usual.

027

Wearing opaque lipstick gives you SPF 200+, which is far superior to a run-ofthe-mill lip balm. If you can’t see the natural color of your lips, neither can the sun.

Layering products with SPF does not increase the level of protection. You will only get up to the protection of the highest SPF product you put on. SPF works best when applied directly to the skin, so if you are layering, put the highest SPF product on first.

artist we love

e u y n i x the m ove m e n t the fashion designer an d artist describes a day in motion media by taryn ford. work by xin the life. yue

-ARTIST WE LOVE

N: How did you come up with the idea of animated fashion illustration? X: To be frank, my professor Mengjie led me into this field. I had no idea what it was before I took her class. However, since I started to learn the medium, I couldn’t stop myself. It is a perfect fit for me. I think fashion needs movement and emotion, which cannot be shown just through pieces or photos, which is why I keep learning the motion media stuff.

N: What do you for fun when you have free time? X: Diving is the thing I always do after every tough quarter. I love adventure; it helps me get my energy back. N: What do you miss most about Shanghai? X: Friends, family and the food. N: What fashion designers inspire you? X: Alexander Wang, Humberto Leon, and John Galliano N: What’s your favorite fashion blog? X: Leaf Greener, Susie Lau N: Where do you see yourself in the next five years? X: Definitely working in New York, to get closer to my dream.

NYLON: When you first entered university, what did you see yourself doing? Xinyue: I entered university when I was 18 years old. I remember at that time, I always liked to do hand-crafts during my spare time. Traveling has also been a rich experience for me to build my own design thinking and aesthetic. N: Can you describe the adventure from that point to where you are now? X: I think everything started from my dream and passion of learning fashion. I was not satisfied with my university because of the policy of school and the professors’ abilities. I thought I didn’t get enough knowledge from them. Coming to America to continue studying was the first step to reaching my dream. N: What inspires you when you’re creating your illustrations? X: The designer’s concept and the model’s style.

N: What are your favorite mediums to use? X: For illustration? I think watercolor and ink. N: Talk to us about your upcoming apprenticeship with Alexander Wang. How did that come to be? X: As an international student, it was not that easy to get started. Being prepared and working harder; that’s the only thing I want to say.

the artists collections the face behind vicotor + alexander, joshua mcleod, opens up about his new collaboration with tommy may, emily oot, and olivia miller. NYLON: What inspired you to collaborate for this upcoming collection? Joshua: Collaborations are so much fun for me! I believe that collaborations are ways for different artists to work together and produce good work. I think that it’s important for artist to collaborate because you learn skills and techniques that you didn’t know previously. You also broaden your audience when you do a collaboration. Their fans become your fans, and yours theirs. It’s a win-win. N: Why did you choose the designers to collaborate with that you did? J: I chose these specific designers because they were the 3 that really stood out to me. I have admired Emily’s work for quite some time! I have always wanted some of her work, but I was too afraid to ask (don’t ask why, haha.) When it came to Olivia, I knew I wanted to work with her, but I just didn’t know how. Then I decided I would start my home goods collection and have her headline it. I love her prints so I knew that I would love what she produced for me. Tommy is a pretty popular guy on campus. I had never met him, but I was well aware of his paintings. The thing with Tommy was that we approached each other about the idea [of working together] at the same time. So, it worked out perfectly!

N: How in the world do you fit all that you do into your schedule? J: I get asked this question a lot, and it cracks me up every time. My schedule is a shit-show. I spend x number of hours in the morning working on orders, then class, then come home, eat, and work on more bags. I usually schedule my meetings with my collaborators after class or over the weekend. The meetings last about 10-20 minutes so its not a huge dent in my schedule. N: Do you wish to collaborate in the future? J: I definitely want to do future collabs, but I want to see how this collection does. I have had a blast working together with these artists, but I also have so many ideas for solely Victor + Alexander bags. N: What surprised you most about this experience? J: The most surprising thing about this whole collection is how simple it was to put this entire collection together. All of the artists were great at time management and meeting deadlines. (I wish I could say the same for myself!) We all had great ideas that really came to life in 4 short weeks. N: What would you say is your end goal after SCAD? J: Right now, after SCAD I would like to open a Victor + Alexander brick and mortar store in NYC or LA. But if that doesn’t happen, I would like to be a digital marketer for an accessory brand.

thrill of it it girl ashley rosales opens up to us about her blog, her style, and what its like living in the southern state of georgia. this ballbuster will have you eating out of the palm of her hand by the end of this feature. so, stay tuned because this chick is about to take over the world.

Ashley Rosales is an expert when it comes to three things: fashion, dancing and hot dogs. At our early morning photoshoot, the dark-haired, green-eyed, badass talked about her passion for all three, as well as her secret love for writing poetry. Anyone who has read Ashley’s blog can tell that she is more than just a pretty face. Her fashion statements are paired with strong, witty commentary, leaving the reader wanting to come back for more. She has a keen eye for what is trendy and sound judgment about what is not. She pulls the reader in and brings him or her around to her point of view. It appears as though Ashley is still searching for her soulmate. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that she will find him in Savannah. Her tastes lean more toward the big city boys of DC or the laid back dudes of Cali. Ashley may do well to look for her next partner on the dance floor, as we also learned that one of her favorite pastimes is dancing the night away at every given opportunity. From Marc Jacobs to Hood by Air, from hot dogs to oysters, Ashley Rosales is a multidimensional, multi-talented blogger with her head on her shoulders.

N: What’s your favorite food to eat in public? A: Probably oysters. So weird, but I love raw oysters. N: What’s your favorite topic to write about? A: Fashion. I know that’s super cliche, but fashion, and things I wouldn’t say out loud. I dabble a lot in poetry. That’s my nerdy guilty pleasure. I carry a journal with me and am always trying to write poetry, so those are the things I wouldn’t say out loud. A good amount of the things I write about are things I keep to myself. N: Who is your biggest blogger inspiration? A: I Hate Blonde, for sure. I think the way that she writes her own editorials and then curates shoots based on them is incredible. You should really check her out. N: How’s the dating scene in Savannah? A: Can you write down me gagging? Or, like, me sticking my tongue out and pointing at it? No, seriously, because it’s terrible. I mean, really, it just does not compare to home. I’m from DC and I miss DC boys. And [Savannah] really does not compare to LA, which is definitely my cup of tea in terms of boys. N: How would your friends describe you? A: Crazy, witty, probably funny, and a pain in their ass. N: How would your mom describe you? A: Defiant, talented, her best friend. My mom really is my best friend. And, an even bigger pain in her ass. N: We’ve heard rumors that you like to get down. How would you describe your dance moves? A: Okay, where the hell did you hear that?! I love to dance. I don’t even know. All I know is that when I go out, I couldn’t care less about talking to people. All I want to do is get a drink in my hand and just dance. My friends would say, “My drink and my two-step. For sure.” My friends make fun of me because, seriously, when we go out to any place, I’m just like, “Alright guys, see y’all later. I just need to find a dance floor. Bye!”

A: What’s your favorite food to eat at home? N: Hot dogs. For sure. Hot dogs are definitely my food guilty pleasure. Seriously, when I got back from Hong Kong, I was like, “please, can I go get a hot dog?” I had never been so happy in my entire life. N: What’s your oldest piece of clothing that you still wear? A: My dad’s vintage Marc Jacobs button down. I’ve had it for years and he’s tried to steal it back multiple times and I’ve taken it back every single time. N: Your dad sounds so cool! A: He is. My dad is the reason I love fashion. My dad is a purely creative person. I steal his clothes all the time. My blog posts are probably contain forty percent my dad’s clothes. N: It’s 15 minutes before class and you just woke up. What’s your go-to look in case of emergency? A: Probably my Hood By Air t-shirt, which I am so short that I’ve made it into a dress, a pair of socks, and my navy booties, for sure, and a watch. N: Beards or not to beards? A: No beards – scruff. N: What type of guy stops you in your tracks? A: This is such a difficult question. I just love being by myself, so it’s hard for me to ever really like boys. I would say the type of guy that stops me in my tracks is someone that has the ability to make me re-think being alone. A boy that stops me in my tracks would be my ideal type of boy, and I don’t really think that many guys can do that. N: Who is your girl crush? Why? A: Probably Kylie Jenner. I’m really obsessed with her. I think she’s so incredible. She has the best style. She is such a bad bitch. I love her and I love her Instagram. The way that she just carries herself, for however old she is now – 16, 17? – she’s just awesome.

“Alright guys, see y’all later. I just need to find a dance floor. Bye!”

Eddie Holecko is a familiar face to many, thanks to his appearance as a contestant on season five of Face Off. If you haven’t seen the show, Face Off is competition series that airs on the Sci-Fi channel that explores the work of special-effects makeup artists. During season five, Holecko was the youngest contestant to be on the show. He competed with new artists and veterans, who had already competed on Face Off. Holecko was the last “newbee” to be eliminated in his season. Holecko was amidst his college career at the Savannah College of Art and Design when he left for a quarter to compete on the show. Holecko joined us to talk about his life after the show and his future.

about a boy

NYLON: It’s been almost two years since you were on Face Off. What have you done since? Eddie Holecko: Nothing. *laughs* Just kidding! Immediately after the show, when I was still in LA, I worked with Frank Ippolito on a costume project for Adam Savage, who is one of the Myth Busters. I later met up with Frank at Dragon Con and assisted him with Adam Savage’s makeup. And obviously, I returned to SCAD [after the show] and recently graduated with a BFA in Visual Effects. Last summer, I worked on my first feature length film in Philadelphia called 6:15. I’ve also gone to a lot of conventions where I’ve participated on a lot of panels and makeup demos. I’m currently interning for a product rendering studio in Cleveland, Ohio. N: So, you graduated from SCAD with a degree in Visual Effects. Can you talk about your favorite aspects of the digital side of sculpture? E: My favorite aspects are the flexibility and speed in which you can design. One of the major advantages to digital sculpture is that you can sculpt with symmetry, meaning you can do everything twice as quickly. Of course, it’s very difficult to bring a digital sculpture to photorealistic quality, because that would require proper texturing and lighting. Another advantage of digital sculpture is that it can be a great tool when designing a large scale prop that requires a large sculpture. For example, on 6:15, I had to create this giant animal carcass. In order to establish the proportions, and if I were to start out by sculpting in clay and then realized the legs needed to be bigger, then I’d be wasting time. With digital sculpture, I can create the exact design I want and then print out orthographic pieces [images from all angles] so no time is wasted. N: What are you looking forward to about the future? E: I’m looking forward to creating better things and more innovative and inspiring designs. I look forward to being a better artist and to meeting new people. And, to learning from other great artists because there are so many great artists to learn from. I look forward to traveling because I love traveling and I think creative careers often require you to travel. Whenever I explore a new location, I’m inspired in a different way.

N: What do you enjoy least about digital sculpture? E: I came to a realization last year that one thing that digital sculpture will never have that practical sculpture does is proximity, which is one of the fundamental design terms we learn at SCAD. In terms of a gallery setting and an aesthetic response from the viewer, if I showed them a digital sculpture and then the exact same sculpture in clay, odds are they’d like the clay one significantly better because they have a relationship with that sculpture. I think that’s one of the things that makes the statue of David so great -- it’s so massive! When you look at the David in a picture, you can see how beautiful it looks, but it’s not until you see a statue like that in person that you really get the full effect. N: How do you see yourself combining your two passions of special and visual effects? E: Despite their differences, I really enjoy both disciplines and I think that they both complement one another. Even when I’m working with clay, for props or for makeup, I see the sculptures in wire-frame mode, because I often work with digital sculpture. Art in both the special effects and visual effects industry are very freelance oriented, so I see myself juggling those two disciplines. If I’m at a studio that primarily does visual effects, then I’ll be sculpting in the evenings, and vice versa. N: What is your next step? E: My next step is to move out west and learn from many great artists work with studios that often produce major motion pictures. The four major locations I have in mind are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, and Portland. So, I guess we’ll see! There are some future projects in the works, but they’re confidential.

the 'must see' this summer Here at Nylon, we absolutely love a good movie. Our favorite movies, however, are the ones that have yet to be truly discovered. We have come to find that these movies make us think just a little bit harder. So, we gravitate towards the movies on Netflix or in RedBox that are different and catch our eye. The latest movie to spark our fancy was Copenhagen. Copenhagen, directed by Mark Raso, stars Gethin Anthony and Frederikke Dahl Hansen. The story revolves around a gentleman named William who has spent time traveling throughout Europe. He soon finds himself in the town of Copenhagen where he meets a young lady named Effy. Effy and WIlliam end up embarking on a journey to find William’s grandfather. This tale of selfexploration and love is exactly why we recommend this wonderful film to you. After winning countless film festival awards and recieving a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes (impressive, we know), we decided it was time to share our love for this movie with you. So, when the weather isn’t suitable for tanning, swimming, or being outside in general, curl up on the couch and pop in Copenhagen. You can find this treasure on Netflix, so you don’t even need to leave the comfort of your own home to watch! Super nice, right?

the collins quarter

Brendon Martin is the senior jack-of-all-trades at The Collins Quarter in Savannah, Georgia. As Martin told us, “there’s not a job I haven’t done.” Like most chefs, Martin has a had a passion for food from a very young age, but Brendon knew cooking would be his career path in high school. After graduation, Martin left his hometown of Philly and began his training at the Culinary Institute of America in New York City. Prior to The Collins Quarter, Martin cooked at Blue Turtle Bistro, which has since closed, and was the sous chef at Maxwell’s, a delicious and quaint fine dining restaurant also in downtown Savannah. “Before that, I washed a lot of dishes,” joked Martin. N: What was the last ingredient you touched prior to this interview? M: Fried shallots. But only because I was putting them away! N: What’s your signature plate? M: I would say a pasta bolognese. N: What drink would you pair with it? M: A Chianti, preferably on an odd year. 2013 would be ideal. N: What’s your least favorite ingredient? M: Ginger. N: What was the last thing that inspired you? M: My inspiration is seasonal, as trite as that is. As seasons change, I consider the flora and fauna that change with it and become inspired by these. I think people subconsciously expect that.
