‘We are Riverside, we are one’
A
s the new school year approaches, Riverside Academy gears up for a full year with new administration under the direction of Principal Michael Coburn, Coburn who joined Riverside in December 2016 with a hefty resume ranging from East St. John’s head football coach, athletic director and principal to St. John Parish School Superintendent. He served on the School Board as director of food service, maintenance and transportation, as well as Chief Administrative Officer. Previously, a Louisiana Department of Education Director for the School and Community Support Program, Coburn started work at St. John Parish Government in Emergency Preparedness and transitioning to Chief Administrative Officer. Furthermore, he served as principal of Garyville Magnet and spent a brief time at Evonik Stockhausen before finally arriving at Riverside. With the valuable experience he brings to the table, Riverside Academy faculty,

students and parents can look forward to yet another successful year in all aspects of academics, arts and athletics. As the only school in the River Parishes to offer prekindergarten through 12th grade education, Riverside maintains a unique standard for its students to become wellrounded individuals beyond the walls of the classroom. But it is more than just a place of learning; it is a supportive, family-oriented community integrated in the arts and athletics. We are proud to showcase the talents of our students early on, beginning in elementary, as they participate in band,
theater, Carnival Ball, Beta Club and many more. From the Festival of Disney World Showcase’s multipleaward winning Marching Pride of Riverside Rebel Band to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Champion titles held by the 2016 football and 2017 baseball teams, Riverside Academy takes pride in a multifaceted environment challenging every student, every day. And although there are many branches which make up this school, Coburn is sure to remind us, “We are Riverside, we are one” — Your journey begins here.”

Great teachers make great classrooms St. John Parish Public Schools effort sparked by TIF grant
M
aking sure there is a great teacher in every classroom making a positive impact on the lives of his or her students is a lofty goal but one the St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District is meeting head on. The effort is being sparked by a Teacher Incentive Fund grant from the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching. Known as TAP: The System for Teacher and Student Achievement, it is a comprehensive school improvement model that focuses on plac-
ing effective educators in every classroom. As a way to keep the conversation going and get as many people involved as possible you’ll see a lot of #transformstjohn this school year. “Students will know and be able to articulate their school’s vision and the goals of their school. They will also be highly aware of their own progress,” said Jenna Chiasson, supervisor of school improvement for the district. “Parents may see an increase in communication about their child’s individual goals and their

progress toward them through the year.” While many reforms focus on a particular area, such as professional development or loan forgiveness as incentives for teachers, TAP provides comprehensive opportunities in four key areas. They are multiple career paths for educators as career, mentor and master teachers; ongoing applied professional growth through weekly cluster meetings, follow-up support in the classroom and coaching; instructionally focused accountability through multiple classroom observations and evaluations utilizing a research-based instrument and rubric that identified effective

Science, math take focus in Reserve The faculty and staff of St. Peter School are looking forward to another exciting year. During the 2017-18 school-year, St. Peter School will continue to focus on student achievement and providing the necessary hands-on learning and discovery activities to allow students to increase performance in the areas of science and math. St. Peter recognizes these areas of the curriculum are only improved when supported by strong read-
ing skills. In an effort to continue on an upward climb in student success, we are pleased to introduce a new Reading Program for St. Peter School headed by Robin Burnette, reading specialist. We want all of our students to have every opportunity available to be successful readers and students. The 2016-17 schoolyear saw students, for
the third consecutive year, end the year with significant improvements in standardized test scores, both on the Leap/iLeap and ACT Aspire standardized tests. As the school looks to the new school year, St. Peter will continue to link the classroom experience with summative assessments that will be administered at the end of the year. All of this emphasis on academics pales in comparison to the religious education program offered by St. Peter — supported by the presence of its SEE FOCUS, PAGE 14

in planning professional development throughout the coming school year and in setting agendas for PLC’s (Professional Learning Communities). The PLC meetings will enable teachers to collaborate and coordinate with each other on a regular basis in order to plan instruction on grade level and in conjunction with other grade levels, ensuring a systematic and challenging curriculum. SJA’s school campus is fully fenced and locked during the school day. Visitors must request access through a locked gate and receive permission and a pass to go beyond the front office. The campus is one of the most secure in the parish, as stated by a representative from St. John Parish Sheriff’s Department. The SJA family invites you to stop by to see what their school has to offer your child and to become part of their family.

veryone at St. Charles Catholic High School is looking forward to another year where students live out their faith by praying and worshiping God, and serving those less fortunate; and where scholar-athletes strive to knock the ACT and the ball out of the park! The exciting renovations and expansions at St. Charles Catholic High School have hit high gear. Because of the dedication of so many to St. Charles Catholic High School, the coming academic year offers enormous opportunities impacting the lives of many River Parish students. SCC’s capital campaign is addressing exterior as well as interior renovations and expansions. The exterior renovations have progressed faster than anticipated, and most of the renovations are visible by driv-
ing around the campus. Not visible from the street is the new Chapel. This brand new, stand alone Chapel will enhance the school’s tradition of having a Christ-centered environment. It will give students a designated prayer space, and a place to celebrate Masses, have reconciliation services, conduct living rosaries, and participate in Eucharistic adoration. The new Chapel will be completed by December 2017. The interior renovations scheduled to be completed this summer before classes start in August include installation of the fire sprinkler system, replacement of the fire alarm system and electrical switchgear, completion of the Entry and Commons additions, completion of the conference room addition, and completion of two BRAND NEW state of the art computer labs. These labs will allow students to collaborate more easily with each

enjoy updates this fall other and their teachers for a full range of learning experiences. The curriculum at St. Charles Catholic High School offers a variety of courses for students interested in technology as part of their course schedule, such as digital and media design classes, code design, as well as dual enrollment classes. Additional interior enhancements include two new Promethean interactive walls that will be installed before the start of classes in our physics and biology labs. These widescreen interactive learning systems promote transformational engagement where teachers and students can collaborate, connect, and share ideas. SCC is committed to providing an innovative, technologyrich learning environment for our students as we help our students on their course to college and heaven. Finally, the interior renovations include a complete makeover of the
school’s gym. The gym renovation will include new bleachers, new floor, new ceiling, and new audiovisual equipment. The gym renovation will be complete by November 2017. Because of all the renovations and expansions, everyone at St. Charles Catholic High School is looking forward to this upcoming school year with added excitement and enthusiasm. The Comets always “fly high and shine bright,” but this year SCC students, in their new state-of-theart facilities, will be flying a little higher and shining a little brighter as they strive for excellence in their Christian faith, academics, extracurricular activities, and service. “We appreciate your interest and patience, welcome your questions, and look forward to ongoing collaboration with the entire Comet commuSEE UPDATES, PAGE 13

AOL launching computer lab for younger students
A
s the 2017-2018 school year approaches, Ascension of Our Lord School’s Principal Toni Ruiz and computer teacher Karin Douroux are excited for their students in preschool (4-yearolds) through second grade to experience their new computer lab. Over the summer, the school purchased 25 new desktop computers. “Our new lab replaces laptops that Holy Cross donated over six years ago when they updated their lab,” Ruiz said. “With computers that are up-to-date,
our students will now be able to be even more engaged in their learning while utilizing the tools necessary to be successful.” Douroux works closely with the students’ homeroom teachers to provide support activities, which enhance topics they are learning in the classroom such as math fluency, phonics, writing skills, research projects and more. One of the main skills Douroux teaches to her young students is keyboarding. “With an emphasis on using technology in the classroom, my students needed to learn how to type,” Douroux said. “They start
by typing sight words, build to sentences, then paragraphs. By the time they reach second grade, students can type their own papers and insert a photo to illustrate their writing. It gives them a great sense of accomplishment to be able to do these things on their own.” Ruiz credits these technological advances to the support of the AOL school community. “Through the continued efforts of our PTO and the support of parents, Ascension of Our Lord School is able to remain competitive while at the same time prepare our students for the real world environment,” Ruiz said.

Improve your child’s math scores (StatePoint) At a time when math is becoming an increasingly important subject for students to master, students are exploring ways to better understand the subject of math and improve their test scores. To help students stand out from the pack and increase their math grades and scores, consider the following. Don’t Skip Ahead One math skill builds on another. The same way that skipping an episode of a plot-driven show will make you feel lost when you return to the program,
missing a math lesson can create confusion all semester long. To keep up, be sure to pay careful attention in class, taking copious notes, doing all your assigned homework, and being sure to talk to the teacher about what you missed on sick days. Don’t move to the next chapter until you have full comprehension of the current chapter. If the class is moving at a pace that feels too fast, visit your teacher before or after the school day for some extra help, or consider working with a tutor. Better Math Gear Higher level math
courses require the right tech tools. Since tests are most often timed, be sure to select a calculator with fast processing speeds, an easy interface that reduces the amount of time it takes to work out an equation, and is permitted on standardized tests. For example, the icon-based menu of the fx-CG50 PRIZM from Casio, has a natural textbook display that makes it easy to use. Supporting students from middle school to college, it also offers USB connectivity that helps students take their lessons from calculator to computer.

More information can be found at CasioEducation.com. Form a Study Group The benefits of being in a study group are numerous, from accountability to
expanded opportunities to explain the material to others. Different students will bring different skills to the table, helping everyone fill in knowledge gaps. Consider forming such a group with
classmates, and setting regular meetings to go over the latest material together. Math class doesn’t need to seem so formidable. Improve your grades and test scores with the right tools and study habits.

teachers. Jennifer Brock, a Louisiana Teacher of the Year semifinalist, is a TAP master teacher at Lake Pontchartrain Elementary. “TAP will allow St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools to apply and evaluate student progress data to individualize student learning needs,” she said. “Also TAP will give individualized strategic support for ALL teachers in the district. The support is tailored from the district to administration to teachers and to the students.” This summer, all school and district leaders participated in rigorous training to prepare for the actual TAP implementation in the 2017-18 school year.
“I am extremely excited about the TAP initiative in St. John the Baptist Parish,” Lake Pontchartrain Elementary School Principal Jason Beber said. “I am most impressed with the way the process supports teachers and students. Providing better support and opportunities for our teachers to grow in their profession is truly what is best for kids. The mindset that we grow every student and every teacher is a formula for success. We are excited to offer our teachers and students a process that encourages all to grow to their full potential.” West St. John High School Principal Claude Hill said the multi-level approach would help educators at every level improve. “I am excited that the process provides a tremendous amount of support and assistance for everyone involved in education,” he said. “Parents and students should also be excited because this system will create a situation that will increase learning outcomes for our children.”
