NEW ORLEANS — Glen and Gary Smith, CEO and president of the Magnolia Companies of Louisiana, LLC, the parent company of G. Smith Motorsports, announced they care carrying on the important work started by a local group of volunteers called the Prom of Champions. The charity event, going into its fifth year in New Orleans, has been financially supported by G. Smith Motorsports for the past four years. The event benefits pediatric cancer patients in the New Orleans area who are stricken with serious blood diseases and cancer. G. Along with G. Smith, the Prom of Champions recently announced a new partnership with What You Give Will Grow inspired by Thomas Morstead, helping expand the reach of the organization and extend more opportunities to teens from hospitals across the New Orleans area. The event will now support patients of Children’s Hospital, Ochsner Medical Center and Tulane Medical Center. “What You Give Will Grow is honored to take on the Prom of Champions event as our newest program,” New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl Punter Thomas Morstead said. “The event is in perfect alignment with our mission to provide unique experiences to children suffering from life threatening illnesses. “If for only one night we take these children’s minds off of their disease, we have succeeded. Children should be worried about what dress to wear to the prom and not when their next chemo treatment will begin.”

The Prom of Champions, which is presented by G. Smith Motorsports for the fifth-straight year, provides an extraordinary prom experience at no cost to the patients or their families, including limo service for all participating patients, as well as a red carpet entrance. “We were just stunned by the looks on the faces of the teens as they got to enjoy an event they would have missed an important part of their high school experience,” said Gary Smith Sr., president of the Magnolia Companies of La. “We believed that their illness shouldn’t keep them from having the time of their lives, so we put our horsepower behind the Prom of Champions. “G. Smith Motorsports prides itself on sharing the good fortune that we have amassed through our various companies, supporting the volunteers who took on this challenge has brought great rewards to us all.” For more information, visit promofchampions.com.

Lofton Staffing Services delivers for employers Bret and Bart Lofton help clients develop their business through the recruitment and retention of the top talent.

SPECIAL TO L’OBSERVATEUR

In today’s uncertain and everchanging business environment, how do you decide which staffing service is best to partner with when building a strategic staffing plan? One of the best indicators of future performance is past performance. Lofton Staffing Services, a leading staffing agency in the staffing industry, has won Inavero’s 2015 Best of Staffing® Award for providing superior service to clients and employees (talent). Presented in partnership with CareerBuilder, Inavero’s Best of Staffing winners have proven to be industry leaders in service quality based completely on the ratings given to them by their clients and talent. With satisfaction scores more than three times higher than the industry average, award winners make up less than 2 percent of all staffing agencies in the U.S. and Canada who earned the Best of Staffing Award for service excellence. Focused on helping companies find the right people for their job openings, Lofton Staffing Services received satisfaction scores of 9 or 10 out of 10 from 71 percent of their clients, significantly higher than the

industry’s average of 32 percent. “Lofton’s success has always been measured by the people we employ, from our internal staff to our assignment employees,” Co-President Bart Lofton said. “There are three traits we look for in people: 1. Do you care? 2. Can I trust you? 3. Do you want to do better? This provides a foundation of service to our employees, customers and to our community. We are truly honored to receive this prestigious award from Inavero. We are very appreciative of those who helped us to achieve it, including our inside team, our assignment employees and

our clients.” “With a tightening labor market and a need for growing companies to stay flexible, staffing agencies are placing more people into employment opportunities than at any other point in U.S. history,” Inavero CEO Eric Gregg said. “More companies than ever before need a staffing agency with a proven commitment to service excellence. We are incredibly proud of the accomplishment of our 2015 award recipients.” Lofton was founded in 1979 by Tommy Lofton and has grown from a small firm to a full-service cor-

poration with consulting, staffing, security, energy and medical staffing services. Lofton has eleven offices throughout Louisiana and Texas with its corporate headquarters located in Baton Rouge. Lofton specializes in partnering with clients to continuously develop their business through the recruitment and retention of the top talent in their respective industries. Learning car dealership terminology can make buying a car less intimidating

A new or used car buyer familiar with industry lingo can leave a dealership feeling like they got the best deal possible.

Many industries have their own lexicon, and the automotive industry is no exception. Prospective car buyers may visit a dealership and hear an array of unfamiliar terminology. Familiarizing yourself with such lingo can make it easier to leave a dealership feeling like you got the best deal possible. Such familiarity also makes it easier to understand your surroundings and what’s going on as you work to get the car you want for the price you want. The following are a handful of terms you might hear at the dealership when you decide to upgrade to a new vehicle. Babysitter: Co-signer or co-buyer on a contract, or term used when the primary buyer needs help to make a decision or buy. Be back: Prospective buyer who promises to return after researching other vehicles or deals. Bumping: Raising the customer’s offer for a car. Buy rate: The interest rate that banks or financing institutions will charge on all contracts being financed. It is a “secret” number between the lender and the dealer that is the real amount of the interest rate that the loan starts out at before the dealer increases it for its own extra profit. Candy store: A dealership with a lot of

inventory to check out. Chisler: A buyer who works the salesman down to the best possible deal on the vehicle. Closer: Salesperson whose job it is to “close” the deal with customers who are hesitating. Demo: A test-drive of the car. F and I: Refers to the sales department that arranges for financing with a lender. It stands for finance and insurance. First pencil: An opening offer from the sales manager. Flake: Refers to a customer with bad credit. This customer may be referred to as a “roach” as well. Four-square: A worksheet divided into four squares to represent the four elements of a car deal: selling price, trade-in value, monthly payment and down payment. Gold balls: A customer who has excellent credit and usually an impressive down payment. Green pea: A novice salesperson. High penny: To increase a customer’s monthly payment without exceeding the next dollar amount. Lay down: A customer who says yes to everything. Sled: A trade-in that is worth little or nothing. Tower: The floor manager’s office or central location.

Louisiana chemical industry poised for job growth BY U.S. SEN. DAVID VITTER SPECIAL TO L’OBSERVATEUR

Louisiana is on the verge of an industrial renaissance. Our energy, chemical and manufacturing sectors are all positioned for major economic gains. And I’m doing everything I can to help all of Louisiana’s development projects move forward in the right direction. One thing in particular that will be a huge help to our River Parishes is to update a decades old law that is regulating the chemical manufacturing industry. The Louisiana chemical industry is one of the cornerstones of our economy, and the River Parishes are home to many of those companies, which is why reforming the existing law needs to happen — and soon. Recently I’ve introduced a new bill that is breaking through partisan logjams in Congress that will do just that. I have carefully crafted a bill that will update our nation’s most important chemical safety law, protect public health and ensure Louisiana workers and producers in this sector are more competitive than ever. It’s neither a Republican or Democrat approach, but rather a balanced compromise that represents a significant improvement over the current law. This bipartisan legislation will provide greater regulatory certainty to the chemical manufacturing industry and strikes a balance between state and federal roles in managing chemical safety. It creates a predictable and transparent system to regulate the safety of chemicals based on the latest science. And it also preserves existing state actions and allows further state actions on chemicals where the Environmental Protection

U.S. Sen. David Vitter is a candidate for Louisiana governor

Agency (EPA) is not acting. These include mandating a stronger risk-based, decision-making process, which means each chemical will be reviewed in a reality-based

light. The EPA will have to consider the potential hazards of chemicals, as well as potential exposure to the general public and vulnerable populations.

Along similar lines, our bipartisan bill includes transparency provisions that ensure credibility and provides that all stakeholders have a voice throughout the new process. All in all, this bill strikes an incredibly important balance — protecting the health and safety of consumers and workers alike and allowing Louisiana job creators to create jobs. It’s important to remember that chemicals are part of our everyday lives, and our Louisiana companies are using these chemicals to create household cleaners, energy products, plastic and even some of the clothes we wear every day. I want Louisiana to continue to lead the international chemical manufacturing community in competitiveness, while ensuring we have a strong law that does what it was created to do 40 years ago: protect our kids from dangerous substances. The momentum building around chemical safety reform has reached a critical point. I was able to introduce our legislation with 18 original cosponsors, an equal number of Democrats and Republicans. You know as well as I do — that’s no easy feat in Washington. I’ll continue urging all of my colleagues to get behind this legislation. We need to embrace this moment of opportunity to overhaul a major environmental law that is four decades removed from reform. Protecting the health and prosperity of Americans depends on it. Louisiana is a real leader in this area, and by updating an outdated law that’s not working, we can continue to lead. The industry will have more stability to create more jobs, and above all else — we’ll have the necessary measures in place to keep our kids safe.

The Magnolia Companies of Louisiana, L.L.C., a twenty-six company conglomerate based in the Louisiana River Parishes.

Time to harness job creating power of Louisiana industry BY SCOTT ANGELLE, LA. PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONER SPECIAL TO L’OBSERVATEUR

I was taught at a young age that our communities, our churches and our nation are a reflection of our own efforts. If you want to make a difference, you have to get off the sidelines and get onto the playing field. I have spent a majority of my life on that playing field fighting for Louisiana. Industry has always played an important part in my life, and I am confident that this is a common factor for many Louisiana families. Industry drives the economy of our state and creates countless jobs. The abundance of resources we have here in Louisiana make it a uniquely special place to live and work. I grew up in a small town, got my degree in petroleum land management and worked in the energy industry. In recent years, we have seen enormous job growth in the industry sector. Louisiana is blessed with the mighty Mississippi River, America’s gateway to the Gulf, an abundance of oil and gas, and the capacity to refine and transport large amounts of petrochemicals. According to the Louisiana Economic Outlook Summary for 2015- 2016, “Louisiana is in the midst of an industrial boom unlike any other in our history, with over $100 billion in industrial projects either under construction or at the frontend engineering and design phase.” Louisiana’s largest metropolitan statistical area is New Orleans, which includes St. John the Baptist Parish. It is projected to add a solid 17,300 jobs or 1.6 percent annually. There has also been $13.7 billion in industrial projects announced for this area, which includes $3.6 billion

La. Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle is a candidate for Louisiana governor

that are currently under construction. This does not include another $2 billion by the Army Corps of Engineers and $826 million in improvements to the Louis Armstrong International Airport. Both the LSU Health Sciences Center and the VA hospital will also

be adding another 2,100 high-paying jobs. By creating and investing in these strong jobs for our state, we will continue to grow the economy. We have the highest gross domestic product and highest non-farm employment in our economy ever in the history of the state of Louisiana.

As we foster a positive business climate across our state, our economy will continue to grow, and more jobs will be created. In order to do this, we must have a business friendly tax climate that is smarter, fairer, and simpler for those we serve. We must continue to strengthen our workforce development in order to have men and women who are trained for the caliber and quality of jobs we are bringing in. The Louisiana Department of Economic Development’s FastStart program provides employee recruitment, screening, and training for eligible, new and expanding companies at no cost. Based on a company’s current and long-term workforce needs, the FastStart team develops unique programs that ensure quality, flexible workers are prepared for the job. As a state, we must support programs like FastStart that train employees and attract businesses to our state. We must also support the businesses that have made the smart decision to invest in Louisiana, and we must be certain not to neglect their capital investments in our state. According to the Louisiana Economic Outlook Summary for 2015- 2016, Louisiana as a whole is forecasting tremendous progress over the next two years, adding 34,100 jobs in 2015 and 32,600 jobs in 2016. Louisiana’s industries could’ve gone anywhere in the world, but they came here…we must recognize and respect that. When industries thrive here in Louisiana, our economy is stronger and our families are better off. As Governor, I’ll fight for Louisiana industry jobs, the families they support, and the communities they serve.

For over 50 years, The Magnolia Companies, with the leadership of the Smith family, have developed an excellent reputation in the many business endeavors and relationships, being known for integrity, expertise and a strong emphasis on productivity.

Increased investment needed for transportation infrastructure BY STATE REP. JOHN BEL EDWARDS, D-AMITE

• Building Construction

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 2015

The path to positive growth for business and industry in Louisiana requires true leadership. When I am governor, I will focus on increased investment in transportation infrastructure to deal with the nearly $12 billion backlog of projects, including ports like The Port of South Louisiana. As governor, I would aim to double the current $20 million Port Priority Fund for port development to bring its funding level to at least $40 million. This kind of investment is vital to our economic future, especially in communities like yours that rely upon ports as a critical part of your local economy. I will work hard to complete development of I-49 South through St. John, St. Charles and Lafourche Parishes in order to ensure more efficient delivery of materials, goods and services to and from all of

Louisiana’s ports. Bobby Jindal’s administration has increased tuition by 90 percent for students of public colleges and universities. I will also focus on workforce development with more stable funding for higher education that doesn’t tax the dreams of our students. I will work especially hard on stable, adequate funding for community and technical colleges like South Central Louisiana Technical College, which has made tremendous technological advances in course offerings despite being asked to do more with less by Bobby Jindal. As a West Point graduate, I have learned how to lead and how to fight when necessary. I will fight for the real economic drivers of business and industry — our most precious natural resource — our people. When our people thrive, our businesses thrive and our state thrives. What to expect in technology this year As technology continues to evolve, devices are being used in ways that might have seemed impossible as recently as a couple of years ago. Several industries have begun to institute changes that reflect the population’s growing reliance on technology. Many airlines now offer WiFi service for passengers, and retailers have worked with vendors to provide mobile applications that facilitate buying via smartphones and tablets. Many feel the future of technology will revolve around merging the real and virtual worlds. Over the next 12 months, the following technologies figure to gain more steam. · On-demand computing: Reliance on desktop and laptop computers continues to dwindle as tablets and smartphones grow in popularity. The Pew Research Center reports

that 58 percent of Americans have a smartphone, while 42 percent own a tablet. These gadgets allow for immediate connectivity for gaming and streaming television and video. · Mobile consumerism: Retailers are continually revising their offerings to consumers in an effort to cater to mobile users. Many businesses now boast websites that are optimized for tablet use, while others have developed apps that work in conjunction with traditional websites or as stand-alone services. · 3D printing: Consumer analysts say 3D printing will reach a tipping point in the next several years. As the demand for 3D printing increases, the cost of 3D printing devices will fall and make them even more accessible to the masses. For those unfamiliar with 3D printing, the technology allows a user to make a

3D manipulated object from a digital file. The printer lays down successive levels of material, usually a polymer plastic, to form the end product. Reproducing a digital file via 3D printing can take anywhere from minutes to days. · Energy management information systems: Analysts expect companies to place a greater emphasis on energy management in coming years as a means of reducing energy consumption. · Cloud computing: Cloud computing involves large groups of remote servers networked together to allow centralized data storage. Instead of data saved to a hard disk or drive in a home or business, it is stored to a drive that runs through the Internet. People may be surprised at just how much data actually is stored in the cloud. It’s what enables a user

to access a file from work at home or finish playing a game that began on a computer or a mobile phone. Businesses are increasingly bypassing internal servers and software in favor of cloud-based options. The cloud is prolific, but it still is expected to grow more. · The Internet of things (IOT): This concept involves using the Internet in ways that allows objects to send and receive data. Examples of embedded computing devices can include biochip transponders on farm animals, sensors built into vehicles, heart-monitoring implants, and thermostat or lighting systems with remote monitoring. According to Gartner, Inc., an American information technology research and advisory firm, there will be around 26 billion devices on IOT by 2020.
