uzanna’s Pub and Restaurant is a beautiful restaurant and pub (formerly known as Gallaghers) only five minutes drive from the A49 at Standish. After a full and sympathetic refurbishment, Suzanna’s opened for business in September 2011, and has already gained a regular clientele from both near and far. The pub is open every day and food is served every day except Monday. A single menu ranges from pub classics such as fish and chips, burgers and sandwiches to full three-course à la carte dining. Vegetarian options are a specialty, as is our Sunday afternoon Roast. Real ale beer and a range of lagers are available, as well as an extensive wine list. Happy Hour (heavily reduced drink prices) runs every afternoon. Suzanna’s is also available for private functions and conferences, with a complete range of set menus and buffets and full audio-visual facilities. We also run special evening events from time to time, for example a Northern Soul night in February. We have a special themed menu for Valentine’s Day, which will also run from 15th-17th Feb. Full details of this and all our events and functions are listed on our website.

A relative of mine once tried to explain the secret of a happy life to me; always have something to look forward too, he said. Never mind that he’s a right miserable beggar, he does have a valid point. I’m writing this on what is known as Blue Monday. I have a stonker of a cold and it’s snowing outside. But at home I have a newly acquired pile of holiday brochures and I plan to spend tonight assessing the relative benefits of holidaying in Croatia, Montenegro and Italy. Of course, my bank balance may eventually dictate that my finances can’t stretch to foreign climes and we end up in Rhyl after all, but tonight I’ll be happy because I’ll be looking at sunshine holiday pictures and imagining myself visiting all these exotic places. Try it – it’s a sure fire way to lift those winter blues! On a more local and immediate level, part of our role is to give you information about things to look forward to over the next few weeks or so in the local area. Finding stuff to do in the depths of winter is a bit tough, but we’ve managed to put together a palette of happenings that should generate some interest and give you something to look forward to! Before I go, just let me remind you that our Home Services section on pages 64-71 is now populated solely with local tradespeople who have been checked out with Trading Standards. It’s important that you’re safe when you invite a tradesperson into your home, so do make our Home Services section your very first port of call when you need a tradesperson. Keep safe - see you next time

Competition Winners It seems a long way off now, but Christmas came and went before we could publish the winners of the Christmas Hamper competition in the December issue of Local Life. The three lucky winners, who received their hampers on the weekend before Christmas, were Steph Storey of Carr House Lane in Wrightington, Brian Groombridge of Dowling Close in Standish Lower Ground and Lynn Dickinson of Havenwood Road, Whitley. This very popular annual competition attracts hundreds of entries; so many commiserations if you didn’t win a prize, but don’t stop trying! We have got ten history DVD’s to give away in this issue’s competition, which will be of particular interest to any resident of Shevington, Standish Lower Ground and Cooke Village. See pages 52/53 for details.

Twin Town Appeal
Art Plus
Wigan’s town twinning arrangement with Angers in France is 25 years old this year, and the Under 12’s team from Shevington FC are going over to join in the celebrations and to participate in an international football tournament! The team is looking for sponsors to help with new training gear, hoodies and playing kits, so if you’re a local businessperson and you’re looking to get a bit of publicity for your company this year then do get in touch with Vicky Wilson.
If art is your thing and you’d like to browse exhibits from local artists, then head down to the Standish Arts Group’s next exhibition which is being held at The Galleries Shopping Centre in Wigan.
The team and their parents have various fundraising events planned for the next few months including; bag packing, race night and Easter bingo which will all go towards the cost of the trip. If you require any further details or are able to help the team, please call Vicki Wilson on 07544 576096.
Art will be of various styles and media, and most is available to buy. The exhibition will take place from March 4th-March 27th at the Wigan Plus shop, which is on Standish Gallery, and admission is free.

Bike to Fitness Why not kick start this year’s fitness campaign on Saturday 16th February with a challenging bike ride? British Cycling has launched a series of bike rides to get you in the habit of cycling to fun, fitness and friendship in 2013. The ride on Saturday is for women and children only and starts from the Hockery Brook Pub on Wigan Road in Hindley from 2.00pm. The ride is leisurely paced along traffic free cycle paths and canal towpaths and is approximately 8 miles in total. This bike ride goes along cycle paths/canal towpaths/ quiet roads and is best suited to mountain bikes or bikes with off road tyres as there are some sections of the canal which if have experienced rain during this time of year and can have a few bumps and puddles along the way. Helmets are advised to be worn during the ride and also wear suitable clothing taking account of the weather. It’s advisable to bring along an inner tube just in case of punctures as it isn’t always easy to fix on the trail with a puncture repair kit.
Get a mention! If you’re a member of a community group and you want to publicise your next event free in Local Life, then just email details along with a contact name and number to editorial@locallife247.co.uk
Children are welcome on this ride but all children must be accompanied by an adult taking part and must wear a helmet or will be unable to take part in the ride. Children must be able to ride their bike confidently on cycle paths, along the canal towpath and quiet roads. If you have any queries about the ride, please contact Sandra via breezenetworkwigan@gmail.com.

Picture House If you’re at a loose end this Sunday (3rd February), then pop down to Parbold Village Hall for the latest offering from Parbold Picture House - In Love with Alma Cogan. This gentle comedy tells the story of Norman, the manager of a pier theatre in East Anglia, who has an unreciprocated crush on singing star Alma Cogan. As the plot unfolds, Norman realises that it may be time put his crush behind him and move on with his long suffering assistant, Sandra. This production stars Roger LloydPack, Niamh Cusack and John Hurt.
Wife After Death The mood turns darker as the players at Wigan Little Theatre leave their pantomime performances behind them and continue their season with the dark comedy, Wife After Death. Written by Eric Chappell, the production tells the tale of the aftermath of the death of a hugely successful television comedian, Dave Thursby.
Kolya, the Oscar winner & Golden Globe Winner, will be screened at the Picture House on Sunday 17th February. The story tells of a famous but impoverished cellist, who marries a Russian girl. He needs money and she needs Czech papers. Then the bride runs off leaving behind her six-year-old son Kolya.
As family and friends gather to give Dave a fitting sendoff, it turns out they know rather less about him than they’d imagined and a series of revelations uncover some home truths about the much-loved comedy legend. Choking back the tears and protesting their love for Dave, the mourners set about exploiting his comic legacy for all its worth.
Admission to each film is just £3.00. The doors open at 6.30pm and the start time is 7pm. For further information about other productions at Parbold Picture House, visit the website www.parbold.info.
Wife After Death runs from 27th February to 9th March. Bookings can be made by telephoning the box office on 01942 242561, in person at the box office or you can book online at www.wiganlittletheatre.co.uk.

Year of the Pie This year the Wigan Food and Drink Festival 2013 will be celebrating this home-baked classic in all its glorious forms, and helping to prove that the pie really is among the upper crust of classy cuisine will be one of the country’s top celebrity chefs, Simon Rimmer. Keith Bergman, who organises the festival on behalf of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT), explains the thinking behind this year’s focal point “The Food and Drink Festival was established to show there are more culinary surprises to this town than the humble pastry snack but we felt this year it was ‘pie time’ we celebrated a food that has become synonymous with Wigan over the years.” Now in its sixth year, the Wigan Food and Drink Festival is one of the highlights of the year for local ‘foodies’. This year’s festival kicks off on Thursday February 28 with the Wigan CAMRA Beer Festival and runs until Sunday March 10. The programme includes a host of free, community and interactive events. To find out more about the Wigan Food and Drink Festival 2013 visit the website: www.wlct.org, but here are some of our highlights to whet your appetite;

Winter isn’t good for your wallet. Whether it’s a crisp sunny day, or you’re knee deep in snow, the added chills mean bigger bills. Sadly, neither the weather nor the costs are likely to improve any time soon, yet that doesn’t mean you’re powerless. Work your way through my winter checklist to help save yourself £100s.
Winter by Martin Lewis
Myth-busting - is it cheaper to leave the heating on all day?
Slash £100 a year off boiler cover costs.
Is it worth just heating when you’re in, or keeping the central heating on all day at a lower level? The answer is to turn the heating on only when you need it. Try to keep the doors to rooms you’re heating closed, plus drying your clothes in an airing cupboard is cheaper than a tumble dryer (though watch out for damp).
Don’t mistakenly think you need to stick with your energy provider’s boiler cover – there may be a lot cheaper out there. uSwitch.com has a comparison which can help you cut costs.
It’s the PERFECT time to switch – lock in no price hikes for TWO winters All the big six energy companies have now announced price hikes and the price comparison sites are updated with the new prices. To switch, get yourself on a Consumer Focus-approved comparison site, like MoneySupermarket, uSwitch or Energyhelpline. Better still, if you go to exactly the same sites via www. moneysavingexpert.com/energy, you can get up to £30 cashback. Look out for the new EDF June 2014 fix. It isn’t the very cheapest deal, so won’t come top but the rate you pay is fixed until June 2014 – meaning no price hikes guaranteed. Plus it has no early exit fees, so you’re free to leave if other prices drop. Those on standard tariffs paying a typical £1,400 a year would pay just £1,180 on this.
On a prepay (key or card) energy meter? You can still switch and save. Prepaid comparisons are possible at Energyhelpline, MoneySupermarket and uSwitch, with £200 a year savings for some. Better still, check if you can move off prepay to a normal billed meter, which is likely to be far cheaper with more competitive tariffs. Full help at www.moneysavingexpert.com/ prepaidenergy
Are you due winter fuel payments? If anyone in your home was born before 6 July 1951, you’re due up to £300 in tax-free winter fuel payments. If you’ve previously received a winter fuel payment in a previous year, no action is needed, but if you’ve never had it before, you may need to register. You can do this by filling out the claims forms at gov.uk/winter-fuelpayment or calling 08459 15 15 15.

Free £300 insulation for those on certain benefits While most big providers have now closed schemes, a few are still offering free loft and cavity wall insulation worth up to £300 to those certain benefits. You also need a suitable home. Go to mse.me/insulate
Don’t walk around in your underwear It’s amazing how many sit at home barely dressed, then ratchet up the thermostat. Change your instincts. If it’s cold, chuck on a jumper. Adding one degree can cost £60 a year. Old-fashioned solutions like sausage-dog draft excluders and homemade window quilts really can slash bills.
Don’t pay energy bills the wrong way Paying by MONTHLY direct debit (not quarterly, be careful) is 5%-10% cheaper, but your monthly bills are estimated. Make sure you do regular meter readings to keep them accurate. Overpay and you can ask for the excess back.
Get Martin’s FREE tips and money-off vouchers emailed directly to you each week by signing up to www.moneysavingexpert.com/tips

First
n o J
By Nicola Gray
Jon was born on 11th May 1977 near Anfield in Liverpool, his parents moved to Highfield when he was 6 months old and has lived in Wigan ever since. Jon was born with Spina Bifida, which left him in a wheelchair in his early teens.
First job you had
Not letting this hold him back Jon took up wheelchair basketball in 1992 and was selected to train with the British wheelchair basketball squad in 1994. He went onto become the GB wheelchair basketball captain, has played at four Paralympic Games and won a bronze medal in both 2004 and 2008.
First car you bought
I have never really had a conventional job – as I left High School I was snapped up by the GB basketball team. Lottery funding came in and I was able to play full time. My first official job was when I signed for Madrid based team Fundosa in 2000 after the Sydney Olympics. I’m not actually a big fan of cars; I have had a lot of mobility cars. The first one was a Range Rover but I get bored of them really quickly. First house you bought
At the 2012 Paralympics in London, Jon and the GB team got through to the semi-finals after beating Turkey, but lost the game against Canada, then lost out on the bronze medal position to the USA. Jon retired from professional basketball after the London Games and continues to live in Pemberton, Wigan.
I first lived on my own when I bought a flat in Wigan on Frog Lane but the best place I have lived was in the new apartments at Trencherfield Mill. I loved it there – it wasn’t as far to stagger home after a night out!
First memory you have
The first club I went to was Maximes on Standishgate – I was friends with the owner’s son and we went for New Year’s Eve. I think that’s where I discovered my love of 80’s music; I remember dancing to Rick Astley!
My first memory is of my Mum making me go to a basketball session. I really didn’t want to go but looking back I’m glad she made me – I’ve travelled the world and my passport has been stamped more times than James Bond’s! First school you attended This was St Matthew’s in Highfield – I went back recently to chat to the kids and it made me feel really old. All the teachers had changed! I loved school though and really wish I could go back.

First pub or club you visited
Last
k c o l l o P n &
First record you bought
Last disagreement you had
The first record I bought was actually a record – I had Michael Jackson’s Thriller on LP, closely followed by Bros! I love music so much so that I have two I-Tunes accounts because the first one is full.
The last disagreement I had was in Sainsbury’s car park, I was parked in a disabled bay and a man approached asking if I should be parked there. So I offered to show him my wheelchair in the boot!
First best friend
Last time you went shopping
Is Andrew Bushell and he is still my best friend today – he went to Abraham Guest and I went to the Deanery. I heard through a girl at my school that he wanted a fight so I went up to Abraham Guest and found him. He didn’t want to fight; we got chatting and have been best friends ever since!
The last shopping trip I went on was a day out to the Trafford Centre earlier in the month. I don’t really like shopping, I prefer to do it online.
First kiss My first kiss was when I was at primary school with one of my mate’s sisters. I remember we were stood on the railway embankment. Last restaurant you visited TGI Fridays in Manchester – I love it there! I am a huge fan of their Jack Daniels sauce; it’s just not the same anywhere else. I also went to Sharpies recently; it’s nice to be able to eat what I like now I have retired. I used to have to live on tuna and pasta when I was training. Last DIY task attempted Our new T.V cabinet was the last thing I put together. My dad is a joiner and offered to do it for me but I tried myself. When I finished I was left with two spare parts; one of them being the main piece in the centre which held everything together – DIY disaster!
www.locallife247.co.uk
Last holiday you had The last holiday I had was in Miami we came home just as Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005; there was that much water streaming down the windows that I didn’t think we would be able to take off. I didn’t get many opportunities for holidays because I was always so busy with basketball, but there isn’t a part of the world I haven’t been to. Last sporting event you attended Was the London Paralympics – or my last dance as I like to call it! I have never experienced anything like it to be a part of that was phenomenal. The public, the press and everyone there were amazing. My team’s performance there was a key factor in my decision to retire, I’ll definitely miss it.

Live Concert Young pianist, Nicholas Rimmer, who is originally from Standish and whose parents still live in the village, returns to the area next Saturday at 7.45pm to play in Douglas Music’s next Live Music at the Weekend event at Parbold Village Hall. In 2007, Nicolas formed a regular duo with Nils Mönkemeyer, with whom he won the prestigious Parkhouse Award in 2009 and whose debut CD ‘Without Words’ for the Sony label received an ECHO-Klassik Award. They will be playing some of the most famous and popular works for viola and piano by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Glazunov. Both musicians are in the early stages of brilliant careers and are widely renowned throughout Europe, but less so in the UK. Nicholas originally studied at the Royal Northern College of Music before going on to study in Cambridge, Hanover, Berlin and Cologne. He leads a successful career in Europe as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist and is regarded as one of Europe’s finest accompanists. Your Health Can you sleep your way to better health? Much research shows that improving the quantity and quality of our sleep can vastly benefit both physical and psychological health and wellbeing. If that New Year resolution to do a bit more exercise has all too predictably fallen by the wayside, you can take solace in the fact perhaps the most passive health activity you can undertake will do you a world of good. That’s right, a lie-in is officially good for you, it’s not being lazy, it’s being healthy (do health tips get any better than this?). Our psychological wellbeing is strongly influenced by our sleep patterns. Most of us are familiar with the lift in mood that follows a good night’s sleep, as well as the crankiness that results from a night of poor sleep. Several university studies have shown that sleep-deprived people are at an increased risk of suffering from depression, heightened anxiety and irritability. It’s encouraging to know that for some patients with depression, improved sleep can help with their depression also. It’s no surprise that good levels of quality sleep enhance our ability to concentrate and perform well at tasks requiring mental agility. It seems that improved sleep makes us smarter as well as happier. Our immune systems, (and thus our ability to resist bugs and colds at this time of year) are boosted by healthy sleeping also.
New WI Group It’s known by all for Jam and Jerusalem, but there’s an awful lot more to today’s WI than just crafts and singing. The Women’s Institute was formed nearly 100 years ago to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during WW1. The WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK, with over 210,000 members in over 6,000 WI Groups. Strangely enough, there’s no WI group in Standish, but that’s about to change. Local resident Diana Stray, with the help of the WI Lancashire Federation, has set up a preliminary meeting with the objective of forming a Standish WI group. The meeting will be held at the Oddfellows Hall on Church Street in Standish on Thursday 21st February at 7pm. The WI will give women of all ages the opportunity to make new friends, to discover new interests and to enjoy a variety of talks and activities, so if you are interested, then do come along on the night. For more information about the WI, please visit the website www.thewi.org.uk or call Diana on 01257 404078. Treating the peo ple of Wiga n since 19 81
Lastly, remember that some research indicates adequate sleep may improve your lifespan too. So, now you know the benefits that sleep can bring, you’ll want to know how to improve the quality, if not the quantity of yours. There are many ideas relating to this, and it’s best to try them one at a time and see how they work for you. Timing is the key, with most experts agreeing that it’s helpful to try to retire to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Everyone needs different amounts of sleep, but the common consensus is that around eight hours per night is a good goal. Aim to engage only in relaxing activities before bedtime, such as light reading, listening to classical music and even a little yoga! Avoid big meals, alcohol and heavy exercise in the hours leading up to bedtime. Temperature is important, and you may need to consider your central heating as well as the thickness of your duvet.

Conservatory living is a myth! There – I’ve said it! All those glossy colour Sunday supplements extolling the virtues of having a conservatory; extra family space to relax in the sunshine without actually braving the outside elements are just an overblown sales campaign to sell conservatories. Whilst they are high on our wish list when it comes to improving our homes; conservatories rarely live up to expectations. A conservatory is supposed to be a calm and tranquil space, one that lets us linger over the Sunday papers without having to put on an extra layer or jumping up to retrieve the lifestyle section from the rose bushes. In reality you probably have a love hate relationship with what can only be described as your glass box. They overheat in the summer and winter temperatures rival the North Pole during the winter months; all in all you start to feel like you haven’t benefited from the extra room you paid for. the problems associated with plastic ceilings. Freedom has already helped people save on their energy bills and given them a room that they can use 365 days of the year. The process does not alter the external appearance of your roof or remove any part of your conservatory causing a minimal amount of disruption to your home and because the work is internal there is no need for any planning permission. Paul says “Following our three-day installation you will no longer need to look at an ugly plastic roof, you will have a plastered and painted ceiling with a bespoke lighting and audio package of your choice. Before we plasterboard we lag the plastic roof with insulation that helps to deflect heat away and keeps heat in and the material we use meets all the current building regulations and fire certificates.” Paul is dedicated to designing new Conservatory concepts and is constantly looking at other ways of improving your Conservatory living. In a short space of time his team have now created a Plasma TV wall, which will carry your TV and give you extra floor space; cables can be hidden were possible
Well, before you seal those French doors shut for good we’d like to tell you about a local company who might just have the answer to all your conservatory woes. Freedom Conservatory Roof Conversions promise to give you back the extra room you have always dreamt about. With their innovative ceiling modifications they can make your conservatory up to 90% warmer in the winter and up to 75% cooler in the summer! Money & Investments New Year Resolutions! Firstly, happy New Year to all Local Life readers, let’s hope you will all ‘Prosper’ throughout 2013. Apologies for the plug but it’s the only time of year that I think I can get away with it. With the festive season behind us and 2013 underway, your New Year’s resolutions are still normally in place by now. Amongst the favorites listed are, more exercise, dieting, less drink etc. Sadly, all these involve an element of pain and deprivation, and it is hardly surprising that most resolutions tend to fail by midFebruary at the latest. One resolution that you may want to retrospectively add to your list, which importantly involves very little pain but can have significant benefits is to have an investment health check. Every January, I notice a significant increase in the number of enquiries from Local Life readers wanting to review their investments. What prompts this increase? Perhaps time off during the Christmas holidays, completion of tax returns, and the end of the tax year looming or the feeling of optimism moving into the New Year. Whatever the trigger, reviewing and revamping your portfolio now could make a significant difference to your portfolio value. Apart from weeding out the poor performing funds and checking you’re still on track, you might find your finances could be arranged more tax-efficiently. I was chatting with a family friend over the Christmas period who was moaning about the amount of paperwork he was receiving from all his different investments and his ability to keep on top of this. At the heart of the problem was that “everything was all over the place” - for every investment he was dealing with a different company. He’d lost control of his
36
Before
portfolio and the piles of paper in his study continued to grow. No action was being taken, potentially costing him money. He didn’t have a clue what his up to date valuations were and didn’t know how well his investments had been performing. Having pondered this for some time I asked him what his “ideal” would feel and look like. Here are some of his comments. He wanted to….. • Retake full control of his investments rather than getting swamped with paperwork and information • Have “peace of mind” knowing that an expert was also keeping an eye on his investments • Invest in a wide choice of leading companies without being tied in to a single company/fund • Just deal with “one firm” for all of his different investments rather than having to speak to different companies for his various funds • Have a system that would give him a “bird’s eye” view of his entire portfolio rather than manually piecing together his different statements and constructing his own spread sheets • Have access to his entire portfolio valuation 24/7 without any lengthy telephone calls to numerous call centres, no wading through paperwork or need to wait weeks for an out of date valuation to arrive by post.

Indeed one of our clients described the difference between the old way of managing investments and using the Prosper Wealth Management Service as “an absolute revelation”. The Winter means more accidents
– What you need to know. As the weather changes for the colder and wetter conditions for driving and walking also deteriorate, the number of accidents on the roads dramatically increases at this time of year. Whether it is because of icy or wet roads, darker nights or drivers being more distracted you are more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident during the winter months. If you are unlucky enough to be involved in such an accident this unfortunately tends to lead to a period of stress and worry when you may not have your vehicle and even end up losing time and money with absence from work due to injury. All because of an accident that was not your fault. We have all heard stories of people leaving the scene of the accident without giving their details or it later being discovered that they were not insured at all, making the whole incident even more stressful than necessary and ultimately resulting in the innocent party being out of pocket. This need not always be the case, there are some simple guidelines that you can follow to prepare for the worst should it happen while you are driving. The last thing that anybody wants is to lose their no claims discount on top of the stress of dealing with an accident.
If you have any concerns about either of the above telephone the police and report the accident immediately. Do not worry you are not wasting police time in doing this. The next step is to report the accident to your insurance company; it is a clause in every insurance policy that all accidents must be reported. A failure to do this may ultimately result in them not assisting you or even accepting the version of events as presented by the other motorist. Finally if you are injured visit your GP or the hospital, whiplash and neck injuries can be very painful and a trip to the doctor may result in a quick referral to physiotherapy or exercises which will ultimately result in a speedier recovery. At Craig and Co we specialise in personal injury claims of all types. We guarantee that your claim will only be dealt with by an experienced member of staff who will listen to your concerns and deal with your claim as quickly and efficiently as possible. We act on a “no win no fee” basis and you will keep 100% of your compensation. If you have been involved in an accident call us on 01942 211670 to discuss any potential claim with our local, experienced team.
It is essential that the person at fault for the accident is correctly identified, if they are not there will be no person to pursue for any losses you may suffer and you will ultimately end up footing the bill. To prevent this always keep a pen and paper in your car. Write down the full name, telephone number, address and registration number of the at fault driver and car. It is also useful to note a brief description of the person driving the vehicle. Although the person responsible for the accident may initially accept responsibility for the accident this often changes when they realise that this accident will affect their own no claims bonus. It is therefore important that you obtain evidence of the circumstances and damage to all vehicles and names of any witnesses to the accident. If anyone gives you their details as a witness take as much information from them as possible, also look around you. Is there a shop or garden nearby in which someone may have witnessed your accident.

In the
Given the number of establishments in that area who are picking up plaudits for the food quality, it’s hardly surprising that we Wiganers tend to head out west when looking for good food; the Dicconson Arms, The Wayfarer, the Star in Roby Mill, Stocks Tavern....whoa, whoa, say what? That’s right, the Stocks Tavern in Parbold, once the haunt of village ne’er do wells has finally found food in a serious way. It’s been a long while coming, the building has been standing since 1810 on the site where the village stocks once stood and local miscreants were pelted with rotten pears, but the word is out that The Stocks Tavern is the new place to eat in 2013!
Local guy Gareth Caunce, who formerly worked across the road at The Wayfarer, was an ex-regular at the Stocks and when he was offered the chance to manage the pub by a well-respected local businessman, he snapped it up. Focusing first on the beer, Gareth has built up the Stock’s reputation for real ales; the pub appears in the Good Beer Guide for 2012 and 2013, and they have just been awarded CAMRA Locale status too. With so much competition, Gareth knew that he needed a top chef to attract local diners, and wee Glaswegian Marti Cameron was top of that list. Marti’s impressive CV includes a spell at the plush Rusacks Hotel in St Andrews and the Head Chef’s position at Rigalettos. More recently, Marti was the guy who transformed the
42
fortunes of The Star at Roby Mill and then he joined the staff at Wigan Athletic, working as Head Chef at their Christopher Park training ground.
The grand opening of Sally’s at The Stocks was a couple of weeks ago and performing the honours on the night was Latics manager and local resident Roberto Martinez. We waited til the fuss had died down and went to Parbold to check out The Stocks Tavern. This is the classic friendly village pub; cosy, with open fires, welcoming smiles, beamed ceilings, great atmosphere and a couple of little private nooks for the romantics amongst you. The choices on offer were plentiful; there’s an a la carte menu, an Early Diners and even a Ramblers menu. Just as we’d warmed up, our starters arrived. I started the night with Sally’s Scottish Salmon, Chilli and Herb Fish Cake, served with petit coriander salad with a tomato concasse. Spicy, packed with a hell of a kick, this dish wakes up your taste buds with the culinary equivalent of a Glasgow kiss! Don’t forget a squeeze of lemon to add a bit of zest too. Just as you think you can’t take any more, the tomato concasse comes along to add a soothing balm to your palette. Meanwhile, my partner was tucking into her starter – A Wedge of Brie encased in herb encrusted breadcrumbs accompanied by a plinth of salad, and served with plum and onion chutney. The smooth and creamy Brie was a delight to savour, and the fruity chutney contrasted perfectly. The salad was
Stocks
tasty too and both plates were completely cleared!
Like many people, we’d cut back on food after Christmas, and we were spoilt for choice at Sally’s though with so many exciting dishes on offer. In the end I plumped for the Pan Fried Medallions of Pave Beef Rump Steak, which duly arrived stacked in a tower of sweet potato and roast root vegetable mash and surrounded with stroganoff sauce. Reader – it was gorgeous! Please note that if I ever end up on Death Row, make sure this is my last meal. Infused with rosemary, the tender beef was exceptionally tasty, the mash was chunky, but not too chunky and the sauce was rich and juicy. This meal was accompanied by some delicious new potatoes and fresh winter vegetables too.
Stuffed, warm and hugely contented, we sat back in pleasure at polishing off those two delicious main courses. Ahead was dessert, and purely for research purposes (!), I ordered a single homemade Apple and Honey Crumble with Crème Anglaise.

Put aside any perception you had about the Stocks, and make room on your ‘Places to Eat’ list for the Stocks Tavern. But the word is out, so move quickly – this cosy country pub with fantastic, home-made food at very reasonable prices sits just 60 diners at any one sitting and pre- booking is likely to be needed to secure a table! Whilst tucking into my feast of a main course, I did wonder why my dining partner was silent. It turned out that she was completely fulfilled with her own choice of main course, which was the Oven Roasted Breast of Chicken, stuffed with Mozzarella and Garlic Mushrooms. This was a deceptively large and tender portion of chicken, with the skin crisped up beautifully, and was complemented perfectly with plentiful curls of the most exquisite Parma ham and a very light but tasty pesto sauce. To top it all, she’d ordered an extra side dish of heavenly chunky home cut chips!
A generous portion arrived, big enough for two, and topped with a strawberry. It was really tasty, the natural sweetness of the honey really shone through, and the Crème Anglaise was super too. But really and truly, we were stuffed.

Haigh Windmill & Lady Mabel’s Wood
46
This is Jack’s second walk in the area of Haigh and whilst most of the walk is on good surfaces, there are a few short sections where waterproof footwear is a must, which isn’t suprising after the wetest year in English history. The walk is of about 4.5 miles with a difference in elevation of about 320 ft; most of the climbing being on the second half of the walk. If you have time after your walk then do have a look around the outside of the hall and some of its nearby attractions, all of which are sign posted.
We start the walk from the pay and display car park at Haigh Hall Country Park, from where we head east along Copperas Lane past the gothic cottages, towards the village of Haigh. After about a 1/4 mile you’ll notice an old windmill that has recently been restored coming into view ahead of you in the field on the right. Continue all the way up the road until you reach the main road at Haigh.
Here you will notice a narrow lane to your right that runs down the side of the Parish Church of St David. Take this lane and follow it until it turns to the right, where you leave the lane to continue straight on along a surfaced path. Where the path takes a sharp turn to the right, you need to go left, through the metal gate and then right into the field. This section was very muddy when we did the walk. Your aim here is to keep to the right and find the path close to the fence line, but you may need to go out into the field first to avoid the mud as we did. The path is an old rail bed and you follow it first going under a road bridge and continuing on, keeping to the left hand side of the path to avoid more mud further along the way. Eventually you reach the Leeds & Liverpool canal where you cross the bridge and continue on down the hill until reaching Aspull Sough Minewater Treatment Scheme site. Here you take the path to the right and after about quarter of a mile you come to a tarmac path on your left. Take this path down to where it emerges at a clearing where you come across another old rail bed. Walk straight across and you’ll notice a stepped path leading down to one of the old entrance roads to the Haigh Estate.
Haigh Windmill The Grade II listed windmill at Haigh, the last surviving windmill (wind pump) in Greater Manchester, was built in or around 1845 to pump water 500 metres uphill from a nearby pond to the Haigh brewery of John Sumner & Company, that was situated behind the Balcarres Arms. In 2011, with the aid of £60,000 largely by Heritage Lottery Funding, the windmill underwent extensive restoration.

At the bottom of the roughly stepped path you go right and head down this road to where it joins the main driveway that runs from Wigan Lane up to Haigh Hall. Here you go right again walking up a short climb heading towards the Hall. At the top of the climb take the rough surfaced road on your left just before the bridge over the old railway cutting.
The stone stands at the bottom of a path that leads up through the trees. Take this path to where it emerges by the side of the Alms Houses from where you then follow the unsurfaced single track road out onto Hall Lane. Here you turn to your right and walk along the lane until you pass a line of laurel bushes on your left, at which point you’ll find a gate and public footpath.
Follow this road down over the small stream and up round to the left. As the road starts to go downhill again you’ll notice a stone marked with the words Wigan Way.
Go around the gate and follow the track until you reach the path on the right. Taking this path leads you through Lady Mabel’s Wood (a Woodland Trust site) and on up
48
to the Leeds & Liverpool canal. At the canal turn to your left and follow the towpath, taking in the views along the way, until you reach the bridge (number 61) where you leave the canal and go over the bridge to climb Sennicar Lane. This will eventually bring you out onto School Lane, but before emerging at the junction, as with Jack, ensure your dog is safely back on its lead. Turning right you walk along School Lane, taking in the view on your left towards Blackrod and the hills beyond, before reaching the car park from where you started out. If at this point you’re in need of some refreshment you’ll find a café in the old stables, just beyond the car park towards the hall. Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear whilst walking. Our Story This new DVD release, a film researched and written by local resident John O’Neill, tells the historic story of the Shevington area (including Shevington Moor, Shevington Vale/Appley Bridge, Crooke and Standish Lower Ground). Nowadays, the area is a pleasant residential area surrounded by green fields, but the film looks beneath the surface to reveal its rural beginnings, and how the whole district was transformed during the Industrial Revolution by the construction of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal and the exploitation of the area’s rich coal reserves.
Local Life has got TEN of these DVD’s to give away to the winners of this month’s competition; simply complete the crossword on the right and send it to Local Life 247 Ltd, Unit 8 - Hewitt Business Park, Winstanley Road, Orrell, Wigan WN5 7XB – or email your answers, along with your address and contact number to crossword@ locallife247.co.uk. The closing date for the competition is Thursday 28th February 2013. The names and addresses of the winners will be publicised in the April issue of Local Life. This DVD is a ‘must-watch’ for all residents of the area, but would also make a great present for ex-residents of the area and an essential memento for future residents too. This celebration of the area’s heritage is the work of Shevington resident John O’Neill, the chair of Wigan Borough Environment and Heritage Network and a former Deputy Leader of Wigan Council. For the production of the DVD he enlisted the help of Tradition Films, who produced the recent, popular ‘Our Heritage’ DVD, which highlighted heritage sites around Wigan Borough. John said, “I hope that the DVD will inspire and encourage other communities across our Borough to tell their story in this, and other John O’Neill ways, for posterity.” If you can’t wait to see if you have won a copy of the DVD, then it is available to buy for £10 by sending a cheque payable to ‘John O’Neill’ to 24 Willowbrook Drive, Shevington, WN6 8AH. The DVD is also available, along with the ‘Our Heritage’ DVD, in the shop at the Museum of Wigan Life, from Shevington Library or online at www. traditionfilms.co.uk
www.locallife247.co.uk
The hour and half film brings the story up to date by portraying a year in the life of the area today, including the High School, Community Association, Parish Council, Crooke Village Residents Association, Shevington Annual Fete, and a range of voluntary groups working in the community.

your pets Does it make sense to neuter a male dog? Long before male puppies begin to approach puberty, many will already have started to display various reproductive behaviours, which are unproductive and undesired for a pet dog. Performing mock sexual activity on other dogs or the legs of humans is often the start of the process. The sexually driven territorial instinct of the growing male dog can also manifests itself in gradually increasing aggressive responses to other dogs, and to humans in some cases. A male dog can sense the scent of a bitch in season even when far away from sight and earshot, and the relentless pursuit of the bitch in question lands many dogs into trouble. The scant yellow green pus like secretion normally seen at the prepucial orifice of the young dog continues to increase gradually over the years. The excessive enlargement of the prostate gland in some older dogs leads to continual dribbling of urine or difficulty passing urine or motions. The prostate gland becomes prone to infection, inflammation and development of prostatic cysts and tumours, the latter can prove to be fatal. Furthermore, male dogs are prone to certain type of tumours and hernia formation around the anus. The incredible thing is this: all the above described problems are the repercussions of the male sex hormone; testosterone! The simple, most reliable and least expensive solution to controlling all of the above described problems and to eliminate the possibility of testicular tumours is to have a dog castrated. Most of those who have previously had their dogs castrated will generally make this decision for their new young dog without any problem. But first time dog owners sometimes struggle to reach this decision – taking note of various myths about castration. One of the profound but unfounded concerns is that the castration may change a dog’s behaviour. Yes, it does but for the better. It does not change a dog’s personality, if we can call it so. A castrated dog is a calm, composed and perhaps a little more thoughtful dog, rather than the one which is always hyper excitable and impulsive. If a dog is aggressive to humans, castration is less likely to change
52
that especially if the castration is left for too late.
It is true that a castrated dog is likely to put on more weight. This is not purely because of castration but more so due to the dog not spending too much energy on unproductive behaviours. Some may say that castration predisposes a male dog to other uncommon clinical conditions, but a dog that has not been castrated is more likely to succumb to many of the above outlined testosterone dependent diseases compared to a castrated dog developing any uncommon condition. The ideal time to castrate a puppy is when they attain the age puberty, usually by around 7 – 9 months, but large breed dogs may be ready much earlier. However, it is never too late to castrate, as the procedure becomes rather inevitable when prostatic problems emerge which usually happen in older dogs. The surgical procedure of castration is performed under general anaesthesia and is essentially simple, but different vets perform the procedure slightly differently. Some vets prefer to remove the scrotal sac, but at ‘Sunrise’ we perform the procedure in the least invasive way, through a small incision, which is closed without any visible sutures. Thanks to our modern anaesthetic protocols and equipment, most dogs are up on their feet within 10-15 minutes of completing the surgical procedure and usually ready to go home within a couple of hours. Since we opened doors for service over three years ago, we have never needed to keep a patient in overnight after surgery – minor or major. If you need more information or wish to discuss any concerns you may have regarding your dog, please give me a ring on 01257 463 142 and I will try my level best to help. WATCHING
Honda hasn’t exactly been at the forefront of diesel engine development, but this time round the Civic gets a more advanced oil burner. Andy Enright reports. Until now, it feels as if Honda has just been paying lip service to diesel. Prior to 2002, Honda didn’t have a diesel engine on its books. In 2004, the Honda N-engine was introduced. In 2004 it was a very good engine, but by 2012 it was state of the ark. Time for a rethink. What we have instead is a new generation of Honda diesels and this time it feels as if the Japanese brand has given the designs its full attention. The Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC might just be the Honda diesel you’ve been waiting years and years for. This 1.6-litre diesel has been designed to offer high performance and low emissions and goes about its job in a very Honda way. For a start, it’s extremely small and light for a diesel lump, weighing in at fully 47kg less than the 2.2-litre engine. The designers
54
of this ninth-generation Civic wanted to keep the sporty and advanced elements of the car’s character but tweak them to express a more dynamic feel. The car is 20mm lower and 10mm wider than its predecessor, giving it a squatter, more purposeful stance. This ‘blended body’ features smarter aerodynamics, including a rear light cluster that works as an aerodynamic spoiler, managing air flow over the top and sides of the car. The interior is focused around the driver and, like the eighth generation car, features a split-level instrument binnacle. One area where clear strides could be made was in the perceived quality of the cabin. The old car featured quite a lot of scratchy hard plastics but this ninth generation model alters its approach to meet a far more demanding European customer base. Class leading boot space and versatile seating boost its credentials for family buyers. Prices for this 1.6-litre diesel variant have been kept quite competitive, starting at just under £20,000 for the SE model, just over that figure for the plusher ES variant and a little over £23,000 for the top-of-the-range EX. The specification for this trio of Civics is identical to the equivalent 2.2-litre i-DTEC cars, but with the addition of
THE DTECTIVES
revised 16-inch alloy wheels. The range-topping EX has also been treated to a few more goodies in the shape of front and rear parking sensors, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and DAB digital radio. Standard equipment that’s new to this generation Civic range includes Honda’s Intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) 5-inch dashboard screen which displays relevant driving details such as mpg, climate and audio settings. Other additions include a rear wiper, daytime running lights and a headlight-off timer that maintains illumination for 15 seconds after the car is locked. The
(HFT), front fog lamps, auto headlights and wipers, leather steering wheel and gear knob, ambient interior lighting and 6 speaker audio system.
We’ve come a long way in a short space of time and this 1.6-litre unit boasts an average of 78.5mpg and emissions of just 94g/km - that means free road tax! The engine’s the first to have been developed by Honda’s fantastically-titled ‘Earth Dreams Technology unit’, tasked with improving efficiency while keeping the engines fun to drive. It uses a latest generation injection from Bosch and variable nozzle turbo technology from Garrett. It’s bound to be a popular choice with that winning combination of low day to day running costs, excellent reliability and modest depreciation. Anyway, the ninthgeneration Civic as a whole is already a distinctly pragmatic vehicle, utilising technology that works. Nowadays, Honda’s become a bit more mainstream and a little more expedient, and as this Civic 1.6 i-DTEC shows, sometimes there’s genius in exactly that.
entry-level SE trim also includes 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic air-conditioning and USB connectivity for compatible MP3 audio devices. The ES specification adds cruise control with a speed limiter, rear view parking camera, keyfoboperated windows and door mirror folding, plus auto up/down electric rear windows. Additional kit on ES models includes dual-zone airconditioning, Bluetooth Hands Free Telephone

Charities Benefit A local church group raised over £1,000 for national and local charities in 2012 by holding a monthly breakfast/ coffee morning! The event, which takes place mostly on the 4th Friday of the month, is held at the Parish Centre of St Andrew, which is based on Woodhouse Lane in Springfield. Amongst the charities to benefit were Derian House, Macmillan, Marie Curie and Christian Aid. At each event, there’s a Bring and Buy, a selection of cards for sale, a raffle and a chocolate tombola. RECIPE
Cashew Chicken Celebrate Chinese New Year in style with this tasty dish. Ingredients
Method
For the chicken
Cut the chicken into 1cm cubes. Mix with the egg white, salt and corn flour in a small bowl and chill in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
• • • • • • • • • •
450g boneless chicken breasts, skinned 1 egg white 1 tsp salt 2 tsp corn flour 310ml groundnut (or peanut) oil or water 2 tsp groundnut (or peanut) oil 55g cashew nuts 1 tbsp shaoxing rice wine or dry sherry 1 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp spring onions, finely chopped, for garnish
For the vegetables • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
225g bean sprouts 1 red pepper 1 green pepper Red or green chilli 225g water chestnuts, peeled if fresh, rinsed if canned 2 tbsp groundnut oil 1½ tbsp garlic, finely chopped 2 tsp fresh ginger, finely chopped 6 spring onions, shredded 1 tsp salt ½ tsp freshly ground white pepper 2 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp dark soy sauce 2 tsp whole yellow bean sauce 2 tbsp shaoxing rice wine or dry sherry 5 tbsp chicken stock or water
www.locallife247.co.uk
Heat a wok or large frying pan until very hot. Add the oil and when it is very hot and slightly smoking remove the wok from the heat. Immediately add the chicken, stirring vigorously to prevent it from sticking. The chicken will turn white after a couple of minutes. Drain off the excess oil and reserve the chicken on a plate Wipe the wok or pan clean with kitchen roll. Heat it until it is very hot, add 2 tbsp oil and the cashew nuts and stir-fry them for 1 minute. Add the rest of the ingredients. Return the chicken to the wok and stir-fry the mixture for another 2 minutes. Reserve the chicken to a plate again. Make the vegetables: trim the bean sprouts at both ends. Chop the peppers into bit-size pieces and finely shred the chillies and the water chestnuts. Heat a wok or large frying pan until it is very hot. Add the oil and when it is very hot and slightly smoking, add the garlic, ginger and spring onions and stir fry for 15 seconds. Then add the bean sprouts, shredded chilli, peppers and shredded water chestnuts and stir fry for about 1 minute. Then add the rest of the ingredients and stir-fry for about 3 minutes until it is well mixed and heated through. Return the chicken to the pan for a final stir. Serve at once with some steamed rice, garnished with spring onions.

Growing your own I have dabbled in growing my own veg for a few years now in pots and containers, not having had room in the garden because of all the plants I love to grow as well. I have to say that I really enjoy it - it always amazes me how much food you can produce from tiny seeds. So last November I got rid of my shed and bought a Sentry box storage unit instead. It’s just large enough to take the lawn mower and a few garden tools. I re-arranged a corner of my garden and hey presto, I’ve been able to fit in a raised bed measuring 1 metre x 4 metres (or 3 feet x 13 feet in old money) without losing any of my planting space. Before Christmas I planted some onion sets and garlic which as far as I know (I’m no expert in this growing your own lark) is pretty much all you can grow at this time of year unless you have a greenhouse - which I don’t. (Oh dear, I can see Hubby shrinking at the thought that might be the next thing I try to squeeze in!) In March I intend to sow seeds for tomatoes and plant first early potatoes. I will continue to grow these in pots and potato sacks as its really easy. My raised bed I will keep for cabbage, parsnips, mange tout and lettuces (not the floppy kind as Hubby will only eat Cos). This is a great way to get children involved in gardening as well and more and more clients are also asking me to include small vegetable patches in their new designs which is lovely. And don’t think your veggie patch has to look like an allotment. Kitchen gardens can be made to look really pretty as well as being productive. Grow some lovely colourful varieties and include herbs like Lavender and outline beds with low growing Box hedges for seasonal structure. I hope I have helped to inspire you to have a go yourself. If I have and you would like more information, the BBC’s Gardeners World magazine is superb with lots of advice. So until next time - happy growing!
