New Chapter...

In this issue

Early into a New Year, it is fashionable for folk to print their predictions for the next 12 months. But personally, I will resist the temptation; reason being it promises to be a busy, yet unpredictable, year in many respects. The world economy is still fragile and even here at home, the road to recovery has not been smooth. Then there’s the General Election in May which is far from a forgone conclusion for any of the main parties.

20 24 27 28 30 34 35 36 39

Closer to home, although nobody is saying we are out of the woods yet, our High Streets do seem to have regained some of the confidence which, only a few years ago, appeared to be ebbing away at a rate of knots. Being in my position, you get to visit many areas there is definitely a resurgence going on. In many years, it seems that people have now rediscovered the charms and benefits of buying locally. It’s easy to forget that only a few years ago, the big supermarkets were throwing up out-of-town megastores like they were going out of fashion. Not so anymore, they are actually opting for smaller, convenience store-type units on the High Street. And their once-total market dominance is slipping year-onyear which shows that people are exercising their right to choose much more liberally - and that can only be a good thing. Of course, Local Life will always champion local businesses (the clue is in the title!). For our part, we’re constantly looking to improve and offer our readers and advertisers more – and over the last few months we’ve been working on some exciting ideas. I won’t give too much away now, but all I’ll say is that to find out more, keep your eyes peeled!

Pride On Show It’s one of the most talked-about films of the year - and Pride will be shown in Parbold this January. Starring Bill Nighy, Pride is based on a true story depicting a group of lesbian and gay activists who raised money to help families affected by the miners’ strike in 1984. The National Union of Mineworkers was reluctant to accept the group’s support due to the union’s public relations’ worries about being openly associated with a gay group, so the activists instead decided to take their donations directly to Onllwyn, a small mining village in Wales — resulting in an alliance between the two communities. The showing forms part of Parbold Picture House’s regular films, and this one will be screened on Sunday, January 11, from 7pm - admission £3.

Langton The Legend

David Sudworth looks at the life and times of one of Burscough’s most famous sons... As funerals go, Burscough has rarely seen anything like it before or since. Orrell Lane’s Methodist Church was packed to the rafters; standing room only was the order of the day. The mourners ranged from local folk and civic dignitaries to legends of our national game. And when Messrs Tom Finney and Nat Lofthouse took their seats, it only added to the buzz of conversation which reverberated around its 19th Century walls. The New Year was barely a fortnight old when Burscough-born footballing star Bobby Langton passed away. He died in Ormskirk Hospital, aged 77, and, following the Orrell Lane service, was buried at St John’s Parish Church in the village. Amazingly, that was almost 20 years ago now, but his memory lives on. Indeed, the road outside Burscough FC’s Victoria Park ground is named in his honour, with signage affixed to the ground’s brick wall boundary next to the turnstiles.

In action for Bolton Born on September 8, 1918, Bobby, or Bob as he was known to his closest friends, was the son of William Langton and Alice, nee Blinkhorn. William was a boatman on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and the young Bobby attended St John’s CE School. He played on Victoria Park for Burscough Vics before signing professional terms for Blackburn Rovers in 1937. In many ways, his move upwards was inevitable as reports about his footballing skills and prowess were rarely out of the news.

Bobby seated third from right, front row, with Burscough Vics in the 1930s

Just a month before heading to the East Lancashire club, Vics had demolished Holy Family from Southport 15-0, with Bobby, who lived at 19 Mill Lane back then, scoring eight times. Legend has it he signed for Rovers in the boiler house at Ainscough’s Mill, which was just a few yards from his home. Vics received £50 from the transfer, and Bobby’s wages were £2, 10s a week.

The contract was reasonably straightforward, although one of the clauses ordered that “the player shall not live in any place which the Directors (or Committee) of the Club may deem unsuitable”. One wonders just how that could be interpreted these days! In their book, Green Village Heroes, former local journalist John Yates and Stan Strickland, who was club secretary at the time it was published, said: “He was always happiest returning to his roots in Burscough and international fame never changed him. “Albert Gore (a former player) played cricket for Burscough Cricket Club with Bob and recalls the day Bob learned he had won his first cap against Northern Ireland. He returned from Blackburn by train and went straight to Victoria Park where the cricket was still in progress. He never said a word, said Albert. They only found out on the wireless that night, but that was typical of him, he never wanted to make a fuss.”

Playing for Blackburn against Leeds in the 1950s member of the club. Upon news of his passing, flags at Victoria Park were lowered to half mast.

Bobby became the Blackburn youth team’s leading scorer in his second season with 14 goals but, with the outbreak of World War II, his career entered a surprise interregnum. He spent part of the conflict in India before being posted to Northern Ireland, where helped Glentoran win the Irish Cup in 1945. Once Hitler was defeated, Bobby resumed his Ewood Park career; completing 107 appearances and scoring 24 goals. In August 1948, he switched to Preston North End where he spent one season, before moving on to Bolton Wanderers where he teamed up with Nat Lofthouse. Probably his biggest claim to fame was playing in the famous 1953 FA Cup final , now forever known as The Matthews Final due to the dazzling skills displayed on the day by Stanley Matthews. Wanderers lost to Blackpool 4-3 after a pulsating match, which saw Bobby tee up Scots captain Willie Moir for their second goal.

At the funeral service, many of these memories, and more, were shared. The officiating superintendent Methodist minister, Rev Dobson, told the mourners: “He was a man with three names. Bobby to the outside world, Bob to his close friends and whenever he wanted people to listen to him, he would say: ‘Now listen to Robert...’ “Bob was a quiet and unassuming man, generous to a fault who came back to his roots in Burscough at the end of his glory days. He would help anyone in need whoever they were and the fact this church is packed today is testimony to the fact that, wherever he went, people enjoyed his presence.” Turning to his playing career, the Rev Dobson said: “He was the man who could run like a greyhound down that left wing.” One former Burscough FC official also commented on Bobby’s record as the Linnets’ manager: “He often said in his team talk: ‘I don’t mind if we let in six as long as we score seven. And if we lost and words were exchanged in the dressing room, he would jump in with: ‘Forget it, we’ll talk about on Tuesday’.”

Bobby was in dispute with the club at the time and the Wembley final turned out to be his last match for Bolton. He returned to Blackburn Rovers in the September and served them for a further three years before seeing out his professional career back in Northern Ireland with Ards. He then went into nonleague football, with three seasons at Wisbech Town before moving to Kidderminster Harriers and finally at Colwyn Bay. In his later years, Bobby managed Burscough FC and a year before his death, he was made an honorary life

En Garde! Swords at the ready - West Lancashire Fencing Club is running a beginners’ course starting in late January! It is aimed at people who are completely new to the sport. The Club meets every Wednesday evening (Christmas and summer breaks excluded) at Edge Hill University’s old gym, St Helens Road, Ormskirk, from 8pm to 10pm. Club officials are planning to run a taster session on Wednesday, January 28, - this is a single evening session intended for those with no previous fencing experience whatsoever so that they can get a feel for the sport and what is involved. The cost for this session is £7 per person. There then follows the five-week beginners’ course, which commences on Wednesday, February 4. It’s not obligatory to have undertaken the taster session first, but organisers say it does help. The course covers all

the basic moves associated with foil fencing and is a necessary requirement for anyone wanting to progress to full club membership and regular participation. The beginners’ course costs £35 total for the five weeks. Only those over the age of 12 are allowed to take part. More details can be found on the website www. westlancsfencing.co.uk or by emailing simon.edwards@ westlancsfencing.co.uk

19th Century Crime Crime stories from the 19th Century is the subject of a talk by Rufford journalist Angela Danby on Tuesday, January 20. Angela, a former newspaper reporter, will be at Douglas Valley History Society’s meeting, at the WI Hall, The Common, Parbold, from 7.45pm. The cost for visitors £2.50, and further details are available from Liz Foulds on 01257 462121.

Jack’s Tracks

Mawdesley Moss

The terrain between the villages of Croston, Mawdesley and Rufford is as flat as a pancake, but this seven-mile walk has plenty to hold your interest, such as the very best imagery of Croston, the Leeds & Liverpool canal, Rufford Old Hall and those majestic wind turbines on Mawdesley Moss, once the cause of so much grief for the residents of the three villages. Once you leave the confines of Croston though, it’s a walk where you can disappear with your thoughts without getting lost because it’s quite an easy walk to follow, and, with Tastebuds at Fettlers Wharf and The Grapes en route, it’s also a walk where you can enjoy a refreshing pint and a good meal too!

30

turn right at this point and head towards the level crossing by Finney House Farm. Take great care when you cross the level crossing on the Ormskirk-Preston railway line and make sure you have your dogs on the lead. Carry on down the straights of Finney Lane in perfect solitude for a further ½ mile, until you arrive at a three way junction, take the right junction and go over the concrete bridge with the metal railings. You then follow the right bend near the environment agency site and you will come to the main A581 Southport to Chorley road.

Park up close to the middle of Croston, and find your way to the Grapes pub. Cross the main road into The Hillocks and head over the cobbled bridge over the River Yarrow. Once over the bridge bear right down a single track lane, which eventually turns into a footpath leading to a road (Turflands). When you arrive at Turflands, turn right and follow the road for 250 yards to its T-junction with Drinkhouse Road. Turn left and follow Drinkhouse Road (which becomes Drinkhouse Lane) for 1/3 mile to the outskirts of the village.

Turn left and go over Great Hanging Bridge. You’ll follow the main road for a rather tedious 0.8 miles and cross from Chorley to West Lancs in the process too. Just as you spot the sign for the A59 you’ll come across Spark Bridge, which carries the road across the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Take right turn downhill immediately before you cross Spark Bridge. Once you get down to the canal, turn left and go under the bridge.

Once you’ve gone round the left hand bend at the bottom of Drinkhouse Lane, follow the path for 250 yards until you come to a sign saying ‘No Through Road’;

You’ll pass the colourful houseboats and a swing bridge before you spot the black and white timbers of Rufford Old Hall on the other side of the canal. Depart the canal at the next bridge and turn left onto the B5246 (Station Road). If you’re peckish or could do with a nice coffee,

pass a concrete bridge with metal railings and a water treatment works and you’ll eventually come to a single gravel track road (Gales Lane). Turn left and head towards the wind turbines. The gravel track forks, take the right fork, again heading towards the wind turbines. Go past the wind turbines and once you get to the edge of that field where the wooden posts and the grey metal box are, carry straight on towards some fairly modern houses in the distance. After 700 yards, you’ll see that the track bends to the right, so go round the bend and take the immediate left turn, following the line of telegraph poles towards housing. You’ll come across a T Junction; turn right and then an immediate left on Carr Lane and follow this single track road for 0.6 miles towards Croston. Once you pass Manor House Barn (look out for the well in the garden), turn right and then take the next left just before a house called Yarrow Cottage. Go over the Yarrow once more and you’re now at the Old School House. Go under the archway into the churchyard and pass to the left hand side of the church into the picturesque Church Street. The Grapes awaits you at the bottom of Church Street and you’re back where you started. Fettlers Wharf is just 50 yards on the right hand side, where you can treat yourself to a well-deserved break. Once you’ve sated your appetite, cross the level crossing at Rufford Train Station and then immediately cross the nearby bridge over the River Douglas. It’s really tricky at this point as there’s no pavement, so take that right hand bend carefully and follow the road for a further 200 yards to the first line of trees, where there a public footpath symbol on the left hand side. Follow that path around the perimeter of the field and once you get to the corner of that field, cross over the metal roller and follow the footpath around the right hand perimeter of the next field. Follow that path for the length of that field, cross over the brook on a concrete bridge and carry on in the same direction, going under the wires near the electricity pylon. Once you get to the end of that field, bear right and follow the farm track up to an embankment. You’ll spot another public footpath sign, so take a sharp left turn up the embankment and follow the path on top of the embankment, parallel to New Reed Brook. Carry on walking on the embankment for ½ mile; you’ll

On Your Plot

Plan your vegetables for the year ahead Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season.

the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s).

It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space.

For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytunnel before finishing off under cloches. .If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot.

Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against

34

Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come - as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.
