WHY PAY SHOP PRICES?
Betwixt & Between This old English phrase, meaning neither one thing nor the other, sums up perfectly this time of year. The festive season disappeared in the rear view mirror a good while since and though the days are ever so slowly getting lighter; it’s not quite warm enough to crack on with your next home/garden project.

Cast your mind back to this time last year, and you’ll remember that we were stuck in these times, the hinterlands of winter almost, until pretty much mid-April, and then after a very short spring, came a scorching hot summer. So, in proper positive thinking fashion, here are some tips to help you get in the right frame of mind for spring, regardless of whether it’s an early one or a late one; Declutter and get rid of anything you no longer need. If you haven’t worn it, or used it for two years, out it goes, but do make sure you donate clothing and household items that are in reasonably good condition to charity. Make some space on a sunny window sill and plant some seeds, such as begonia, geranium or petunia, and for every day’s growth you’ll feel a sense of renewal. And finally, plan well ahead and work out what improvements you’re going to make to your home and garden this year. You’ll find advertisers within the pages of Local Life who can help you achieve your home or garden ideal but do call soon to secure their services, as good tradespeople and home improvement companies are often booked weeks in advance. See you next time

Flower Power Derian House have a celebrity certified event coming up in March to help raise essential funds for the children’s hospice. The hospice sent out letters to various A-list celebrities asking them to draw a picture of a flower, which will be on display in Chorley across March before being auctioned online. Just a smattering of the celebrities involved in the project so far are Joanna Lumley, Ginger Spice and Jeremy Vine – a pretty impressive list. Derian are also hoping to get the entire cast of Dancing on Ice involved in the showcase. Hepplestone Fine Art at Heskin Hall Shopping Village are hosting the exhibition’s opening night on Friday, March 1. Pop in between 5pm and 7:30pm to view the flowers on display and get a feel for your favourite!

Park
Pals
A group of Chorley volunteers who help clear up Astley Park are in search of new members to go along and help improve the green space. Found near the town centre, the park was gifted to the town in 1922 as a WWI war memorial and surrounds the historic Astley Hall. The Friends of Astley Park were established in 2005, and dedicate themselves to maintaining the park for its heritage and as a habitat for local wildlife. The group has been involved in numerous projects over the years; most recently approved by Chorley Council is the reinstatement of a 770 metre long footpath along the northern and eastern sides of the park’s recreation field. In 2018, the Friends also managed to restore a mysterious artefact to its former glory. While balsambashing in the grounds, they discovered the base, pedestal and bowl of an old fountain, along with a cast-iron pipe which fed the fountain from the pond behind. The humble process of balsam-bashing - which aims to rid the park of the formidable Himalayan balsam before it can choke other native plants, uncovered a true relic of the past, dating back
to around 1844. It now stands fully restored in Astley Park once more. Joining the Friends of Astley Park offers opportunities to immerse yourself in the local community. Recently, the Friends teamed up with various local schools to install 90 bat boxes around the woodland, while park rangers get involved in cleaning the River Chor to remove blockages and pick litter. Projects to rejuvenate the Sensory Garden, install planters in the courtyard, plant wildflowers and improve the water quality of the river have also been completed by the group. If you’re interested in getting involved, the Friends meet in Astley Park’s courtyard at 9:30am for their Saturday morning activity sessions. Help out with gardening, balsam bashing, river clearing, litter picking and wildflower planting – you’ll get some exercise, meet plenty of new people and improve the natural environment around you. March’s dates are the 16th and 30th. For more information, and to check that activity mornings are going ahead, visit www. friendsofastleypark.com

Counting the costs of
DIY Wills
DIY season is upon us this Spring, but Lancashire lawyer Claire Hamilton is warning that taking the Do-it-Yourself approach to making a Will is costing families a whole lot more than money. The savings made on drawing up a DIY Will will seem insignificant to a family that is at war over a disputed estate. Years of wrangling and escalating legal costs are quite a risk to take in order to save a few hundred pounds by not using a solicitor. Many people are downloading standard forms off the internet or buying off-the-shelf wills from high street shops. This fails to take into account the vast complexities of legal documents, and provides no reassurance that it has been done correctly. A simple grammatical error or incorrect phrase could result in uncertainty that leaves beneficiaries out of pocket. They may receive more or less, or nothing at all, with the estate instead being distributed in accordance with the intestacy rules. Even the way in which the Will is signed and witnessed is important, and can fall foul of a lack of knowledge.
different relationships, there are complexities to be considered. Not making adequate provision for family members could lead to a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975 for example. Inheritance tax and paying for nursing care are other factors which need to be looked at before fully understanding the impact of the decisions being made. Homemade Wills are, by and large, a false economy. Don’t risk leaving your family with an expensive mess to clear up after you’ve gone. And, before making a decision, actually get in touch with a law firm to find out how much it will cost to have a qualified person document your wishes formally, it might be much less expensive than you think. It’s too late once you’re gone, and too important not to do it right.
For example, the use of a comma could result in different interpretations of a clause, and any ambiguity can be enough to make the will invalid or subject to a claim. Similarly, failure to date or have the will properly witnessed could see witnesses being tracked down years later, and relying on their memory to prove its veracity. As a private client solicitor I see the damage a badly drafted will can cause, ripping families apart as they battle for their share. Equally, I have seen the peace of mind provided by having things done properly. Modern families come in all shapes and sizes. With married and unmarried partners given different legal rights and often children from

What’s Your
Story?
Legendary storytelling festival ‘What’s Your Story Chorley?’ returns this month to delight audiences of all ages. On Saturday, March 30, venues across Chorley will be lit up with fictional fun. Storytellers, poets, authors and musicians will be hosting workshops and readings across town – learn new writing and performance techniques, get to know the stories behind the stories, and meet some great local talent on the day. Seven venues are getting involved this year: Chorley Library, St. Laurence’s Church, Chorley Little Theatre, Ebb & Flo Bookshop, Rosie Posies, Goodies Coffee Shop and the Union Street Civic Offices, to bring immersive workshops and bookish fun from 11am-4pm. Visitors can also follow the book bench trail – designed by ten local primary schools, the trail challenges guests to find benches disguised as books, which will be scattered around the town centre. On the day, help design a unique book bench of your own and complete the trail quiz – see if you can find all the benches! March also sees a whole host of authors head over to Chorley Library to give readings and hold Q&As. On Wednesday, March 6 from 6:30pm-9pm, authors Sue Knowles and Bridie Gallagher, along with illustrator Emmeline Pidgen, host an evening discussing their book ‘My Anxiety Handbook’ and talking about how young people can understand and cope with anxiety. Tickets for the event cost £3 and can be obtained from the library or on Eventbrite. If that wasn’t enough, on Friday, March 22 between 11am and 12pm, local crime author and creator of the Henry Christie Mysteries and retired policeman Nick Oldham pops in for a meet and greet session and talk.
What’s Your Story Chorley certainly looks set to be a great day for all the family. For more information and updates, head to www.checkoutchorley.com/ whatsyourstory/

Feng Shui Your Home Let’s be honest: a lot of people think feng shui is a load of baloney, adopted by homeowners with too much time on their hands. But the process really doesn’t need to be that complicated, and it can help declutter your space while promoting wellbeing. The ancient Chinese art of feng shui allegedly dates back to the Tang Dynasty in the seventh century. It argues that our surroundings – namely, our homes – reflect what’s going on with our inner selves, and aims to harmonise the energy (or chi) in the environment. This can sound pretty complicated, but don’t worry – here are some tips to get you started. Firstly, declutter. Get rid of any lurking rubbish and throw out last month’s newspapers (you’re probably not going to read them). Wash up any dirty dishes and organise any laundry that’s hanging around. Not only will this transform your home into a more
welcoming space, but you’ll have a lot more room to work with. Reorganise the furniture. Spatial arrangement is the biggest part of feng shui – in the living room, for example, the sofa should be placed against a wall for protection, with the rest of the seating arranged to facilitate conversation. Bright colours like green and yellow in a kitchen can promote healthy eating, while soft, wide lighting includes everyone in dinnertime chatter. Softer angles for things like cabinets and tables can make the room more inviting. Get rid of distractions. If you want your lounge area to be a positive family space, it’s a good idea to cover things like electronics. Putting the TV in a closing cabinet can encourage conversation and family time, while loud paintings might detract from a relaxed atmosphere.

19 Think décor. Getting rid of clutter doesn’t mean you can’t keep things that you love. Ornaments with heavy sentimental value or that make you feel calm can definitely improve the mood of a room – just try not to go overboard. Direct the energy flow. Open windows can seep energy out of a room, while a direct path from the front to the back door can prevent it from comfortably circulating around the home. Try soft drapes or blinds if you want to avoid heavier curtains over windows, and try a colourful rug by the doors. Adding a mirror by the front door can improve lighting and prevent you feeling like you’re being ‘walled in’ when you enter the house. Looking up feng shui inspiration online might sound like a good idea, but just remember before you Google it – many of the houses have been dressed especially for the photography shoot, and those pictures will probably include plenty of filters to make them look their best. Feng shui does take work, but don’t worry if you can’t get it perfect on your first try; experiment and have fun instead!

Magnificent
Mills
By Jess Phillips Although now often relegated to shopping outlets, dusty museum displays, or urban living for aspiring young professionals, mills have always been integral to our local heritage. From the waterdriven mills of the eighteenth century to the surge in mechanisation and the eventual decline of the industry, these great structures continue to have a place in the hearts of locals. The closure of Chorley’s Botany Bay (previously Canal Mill) in February pending its extensive redevelopment into a modern outlet village is a blow indeed to Lancashire’s milling heritage. Mills undeniably shaped the county’s industrial and economic landscape in the 1900s, when the Industrial Revolution settled its focus on textile manufacturing. Somewhere along the line, Lancashire became synonymous with cotton milling, from the invention of James Hargreaves’ spinning jenny in Oswaldtwistle back in 1770 to towns like Burnley making their names in cotton. In fact, the industry expanded enough that the government was forced to introduce a policy to slow its growth down in 1959. The detrimental effect milling had on its workforce is well-documented. Channel 4’s TV adaptation The Mill shed light on the conditions working-class people faced post-Industrial
Revolution at Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire. It’s easy to look back on the industry now with rose-tinted lenses, but with mechanisation came abhorrent working conditions, child labour and many accidents. Many workers reported ‘mill fever’ in their first few weeks of employment; the dust, chemicals and claustrophobic environment landing a hard knock to the immune system. A lot of mill girls communicated solely by lip reading due to the supremely high levels of noise from nearby machinery. That’s without mentioning that textile milling also contributed to the frequent smog that loomed over industrial towns during the latter part of the twentieth century, with air pollution from factories turning the streets into smog-

bound ‘pea soupers’. The 1950s were especially notorious for this phenomenon – although chiefly arising from the burning of coal, bleaching, sizing and bast-fibre processing in cotton mills played their part too. In Chorley, tragedy truly struck in 1951, when a man was killed at Smethurst Mill following the shattering of an engine flywheel. A 300-pound mass of steel came close to severing the legs of Adreina Padovan from Italy, and injured a further thirteen people. Despite the turbulence of Chorley’s milling history, it’s easy to forget the architectural prowess and innovation that went into the construction of similar buildings around Lancashire and what is now Greater Manchester, and to dismiss milling as a brutal stopgap into modernisation. Faster processes revolutionised the industry and Britain for the better, and brought employment and money to Lancashire instead of relying on foreign imports. Despite the integral part milling played in local heritage, many of Chorley’s mills have fallen into disrepair – with renovations deemed too expensive to keep Botany Bay in its current state, and the fire-ravaged remains of Lower Kem Mill attracting tourists at Cuerden Valley Park, while others like Mavis Mill in Coppull have been converted into business spaces. But, whether hotspots for urban
Constructed in 1855 during the Crimean War, Chorley’s very own Canal Mill has been a draw for visitors from far and wide for over twenty years. It was original built for Richard Smethurst, the son of a local cotton milling pioneer. Smethurst died in 1860, and his mill passed on to his business associates William & Charles Widows. The Lancashire Cotton Famine of 1861-65 led Canal Mill to briefly cease production in 1861, caused by overproduction in unstable international markets. The demand for raw cotton slumped just as ports were overwhelmed with an influx of it, causing the price to collapse. Many workers became unemployed, forced to attend soup kitchens and appeal for meal and coal tickets. Eventually cotton imports were restored, and the mill continued production into the 1950s. Men were employed on the top floor of Canal Mill as spinners, while women worked as creelers on the lower floor preparing the bobbins. Many workers recount happy memories of the mill, including combing-room worker Pamela Brown who recalls swimming in the nearby Leeds & Liverpool Canal on hot summer days. Canal Mill eventually closed in the 1950s, around the time of the introduction of the Cotton Industry Act of 1959, when demand for cotton failed to meet the overwhelming amount of production. The Act looked set to rejuvenate Lancashire’s textile links, with the view of reorganising the cotton industry by reducing the number of spindles in operation while
27 making some workers redundant in order to reduce unneeded output. Canal Mill, however, didn’t survive this reorganisation, instead becoming a chicken farm in the 60s and then a repair workshop for trucks in 1968. In 1991, Gilbraiths Commercial Limited ceased operations and in 1992 planning permission was granted to turn Canal Mill into a themed visitor attraction which would draw people to Chorley for decades to come. Botany Bay Villages opened in December 1995, offering five floors of shopping, restaurants and an indoor play centre for children. Still, the mill was allegedly haunted by the ghosts of mill workers, with visitors experiencing a crushing sensation in their limbs as though being trapped in the vice of cotton spinning machinery.
Botany Bay officially closed in February 2019 to be renovated into a modern outlet village and 288 homes.
Grove Mill Owned by Botany Bay’s very own Tim Knowles, the Grove Mill site in Eccleston began its life in the seventeenth century, when it existed as a rural woollen processing farm. A cotton mill was constructed on the site in 1845, and by 1861 employed around 300 workers in spinning and weaving. Grove Mill encountered a few financial difficulties in the latter part of the nineteenth century, and continued to produce cotton until the 1980s, surpassing Canal Mill through the slump of the 1950s and the industry’s subsequent reshuffling. It exists now as antiques emporium Bygone Times – and as a home to several ghosts. Reports of two unruly child spirits outside a meeting room used by the Wesleyan Church sparked rumours of this ghostly activity at Bygone Times. Paranormal investigators also recorded seeing a man pacing up and down, and the face of a lady in a window. A ghost trail is available for children to investigate these goings-on at Bygone Times.
Lower Kem Mill Whittle-le-Woods has a tragic milling past. Home to its own bleaching and dyeing works from the 1700s, the area which is now part of Cuerden Valley Park is now a mere ruin of what once was. What in all likelihood began as a cottage industry enterprise expanded into a larger mill in 1784, with several workshops, printing shops and dye rooms scattered about, with dwelling houses for the workers. The mill became known as the Kem Mill Printworks, and employed around 170 The devastation at Smethurst Mill, provided by Lee Majsa

Canal Mill workers in the 1950s, provided by Pamela Brown industry, including the construction of a 150 foot chimney. Tragedy struck on October 17, 1914, when a fire broke out in the machine room. The fire brigade were summoned but the flames continued to spread, enveloping the roller room, and the office before the walls and roof of the main building caved in. The resulting smoke was visible for miles around, drawing spectators from around the area, and eventually the fire was put out, leaving behind smoking debris and thousands of pounds of destroyed machinery. Aside from the chimney, which was saved, the scene was one of utter destruction, and Kem Mill was no more. The site was used for farming until 1972, when the chimney and remaining buildings were demolished. Several archaeological digs uncovered artefacts from the site’s milling days, and the ruins of Kem Mill Printworks were refurbished using grant money . They are still visible today to visitors to Cuerden Valley Park.
Birkacre Mill 1777 saw the ‘Factory System’ arrive at Birkacre along the River Yarrow. Edward Chadwick constructed a purpose-built cotton mill – one of the first mills to stray from domestic spinning and weaving methods
in Lancashire, and the first mill in Chorley. The mill was leased to Richard Arkwright, who fitted it out with his patented machines and drove power to it using a waterwheel. Arkwright was also responsible for the water spinning frame in 1767, which ran on water power and produced stronger and harder yarn than the spinning jenny. Despite its revolutionary technological strides, Birkacre Mill was perhaps most famous for the riots it was involved in. In 1779, a mob of Luddites – a secret, oath-based organisation determined to stop the ‘fraudulent’ use of machinery in place of a manual workforce – got word of the mill’s innovation and he marched to stop it. The protest turned violent a few days later, when the mob broke into the mill and destroyed its interior. They were met with gunshots from the mill’s forces but the mill’s wooden machinery was easily submerged in flames, killing at least one of the Luddites in the process. Chadwick did rebuild the mill shortly after, and developed into calico printing, dyeing and bleaching. It eventually ceased operation in 1939, and in the 1980s the derelict land was reclaimed by Yarrow Valley Park, and transformed into parkland. HOW WILL BREXIT IMPACT ON MY PENSION? PENSION & RETIREMENT PLANNING
Brexit is the main topic of conversation when watching the news or reading the papers, but one question our client’s ask us on a daily basis is “How will Brexit impact on my pension”? The answer to the above question depends on what type of investments you are holding in your pensions. Many people’s workplace personal pensions have assets invested in the companies that are from the FTSE 100. Although UK based companies, they are multinational in their operations and have much of their earnings from
overseas, in multiple currencies, which means the major issue they face is from fluctuations in the value of Sterling. Many pension funds are managed by Active Fund Managers who have foreseen the economic issues around Brexit and positioned their portfolios accordingly. They have taken advantage of the short-term market falls, to buy assets more cheaply, then hold them with a view of selling when values have risen; with the aim of making a gain for your pension fund.

In a
Heartbeat
What are ectopic heartbeats? Ectopic heartbeats are extra heartbeats that occur just before a regular beat. Ectopic beats are normal and usually they are not a cause for concern. About 70% of medically normal adults without any symptoms at all have ectopic beats if monitored over 24 hours. They are far less common in children and are more likely to be a result of an underlying heart abnormality in those cases. There are two types of ectopic beat: PAC - Premature atrial contractions, which begin in the upper chambers of the heart. PVC - Premature ventricular contractions, which begin in the lower chambers of the heart. An ectopic beat might be felt as an extra awareness of the heart beating; a feeling of faintness; a sensation of the heart stopping for a second, or a fluttering sensation in the chest. The fact that some people become aware of their ectopic beats doesn’t automatically mean there is a problem. Most commonly people who become aware of their ectopic beats are also susceptible to anxiety. What tends to happen is that during an episode of anxiety their system is flooded with adrenalin and their heart begins to race. They become aware of their heart racing, and then suddenly they experience a (perfectly normal) ectopic beat, only it feels anything but normal to them because their heart is already racing. They can then become hyper-aware of any perceived differences in rhythm, and this can feed their anxiety.
Most GPs can diagnose ectopic heartbeats from symptoms and by listening with a stethoscope. Sometimes they will arrange a precautionary electrocardiogram (ECG). If someone is aware of their ectopic beat only when they are sitting quietly, this is less of a concern than if the ectopics become noticeable after exercise, such as running upstairs. Ectopics are also of more concern if there is a history of a previous heart attack, or a family of heart disease. A GP will want to rule out complications such as ventricular tachycardia and arrhythmia. If further investigation is required the GP might order an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound), or a coronary angiography, an MRI, a CT scan, or exercise testing. In most cases ectopic heartbeats do not require treatment; however, there are certain well-known triggers. It can be helpful to review all medications and their possible interactions, stop smoking, reduce alcohol and caffeine intake, and reduce stress and anxiety as much as possible. Remember, most ectopic heartbeats are not a cause for concern, but if they are persistent, or you are worried, then consult your GP. By Louise Addison

Dealing with
Dementia Watching a loved one suffer from dementia is a heart-breaking process. The condition currently affects around 850,000 people in the UK alone, with one in six people over the age of 80 diagnosed. The gradual loss of memory, along with inability to focus or communicate, degrading visual perception, and in some cases aggression and hallucinations, is difficult for both the person with dementia and those closest to them. There is no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease or the dementia symptoms associated with it, but there are a few things you can do to make life easier for those going through it. Make interactions positive. Keep the overall tone of conversations light and be optimistic – if you’re stressed out or getting frustrated, the person with dementia will likely pick up on it and become stressed themselves. Don’t cut them out of conversations or roll your eyes if they ask the same question more than once. Stick to simple questions. Go slowly, with one question at a time, and avoid leaving too many choices. For example, if you’re deciding on what to cook, hold up visual representations of a couple of meals and let them choose from those. Memory aids such as signs around the house can be good for directing your loved one to where things are kept – if they struggle with reading, use symbols instead. Reassure. Dementia is scary – although the person isn’t always aware of what they’re going through, it can sometimes hit them head-on. Deal with this by gently reassuring the person that they’re safe, and do your best to make them comfortable. Being physically affectionate can also help ground them in the present if words just aren’t working.
Reminisce. Although short-term memory degrades, long-term memory is more likely to be retained, and it can be a fun activity to look back on the good times. Take an afternoon to look through family photo albums or at old maps. If your loved one tends to wander, it’s a good idea to put safety measures in place. For example, adding child locks to doors can help to prevent wandering, or making sure the person has a GPS tracker on them can avoid unsafe situations if they do get lost. If you’re struggling, get help. Day centres for dementia patients can be a godsend if you’re struggling by yourself, and provide fun, dementiafriendly activities to get involved in so you can get some time and space to yourself. Don’t be afraid to ask family members for help – remember, they love the person too, and in most cases will be happy to spend the day with them or take them out somewhere different. Remember – taking time for yourself is important. For further information and advice on caring for someone with dementia, visit www.nhs.uk/ conditions/dementia/carers/

Could your child benefit from a binocular vision exam? When Sarah’s 10-year-old daughter complained of headaches after school, she did what any sensible parent would do and booked an eye test. After a 15-minute exam she was told that Maisie did not need any glasses and that there was nothing wrong with her. After a few months, Maisie’s symptoms hadn’t disappeared, and her grades were suffering. “She didn’t want to read and was falling behind in class.”
In a classroom eyes need work as a team at all distances. They should be able to point accurately at the same point on a page, then be able to refocus quickly and accurately on the whiteboard and back again, hundreds of times per day. They need to be able scan across lines of text without drifting off to another line. If eyes can’t work as a team, children might try for a while but often develop unhelpful coping mechanisms like turning their head, screwing their eyes up, and excessive blinking. Eventually they give up and may become disenfranchised from learning.
Sarah took her back to the optician, who this time gave Maisie some glasses.
The binocular vision system is more likely to malfunction in children with dyslexia or an underlying health condition.
“She wore them for a couple of weeks but gave up after that as they weren’t helping, in fact she said that they made things worse for seeing the

Sarah’s friend advised her to take Maisie to see the optometrist who had helped her son when he had struggled with similar issues. “Immediately I could see that this was a different kind of eye exam.” We didn’t feel rushed. The optometrist was really interested the type of difficulties Maisie was experiencing, when they happened, and how she coped with them. She performed a whole battery of tests and explained everything as she was going along. She told us that Maisie was having difficulty co-ordinating her eyes so was having to put in more effort to ‘see’, and as she became more tired with the effort of school and study, it became harder and harder for her to keep up the co-ordination.’

Heath Charnock by Jess Phillips We arrived in Charnock Richard for our latest 5 ¼ mile walk on a cold, misty day, when the snow around us was just beginning to thaw and melt into sleet. These conditions made for an atmospheric endeavour indeed – especially with the ruins of the abandoned Camelot Theme Park rising above the treeline. Having parked up just off the A49 in Church Lane (Postcode PR7 5NA), we set off west, crossing the main road to head along Brook Lane. At the end of this lane you’ll come to a large set of gates leading to a farm – go through the small gate provided for public access and back onto the driveway. Note at this point that the public right of way has recently been changed. Head through the gate on the opposite side and go diagonally across the paddock, then down the
Length of walk: 5.25 miles Difficulty: Medium Accessibility: Muddy in places with stiles to negotiate; some of which are a little wobbly. Some fields may contain livestock. One public footpath has been diverted. narrow fenced-off pathway. The path bends into a sharp left culminating in a stile – cross this into a field. The snow made crossing the field a little tricky, but seeing tree branches emerge out of the fog made it feel like we were the only people left in

the world – only the far-off traffic noise dictated otherwise! I was, however, very glad I’d brought my wellies.
fields. You can also get a great view of the front turrets –and any lurking security guards - from the car park.
Follow the path along the hedgerow and down to the right, where you climb over another stile. There’s a small footbridge afterwards, then a short climb. From here take a left through the woods – and plenty of mud – until you reach another stile into a field. Follow the edge of the field until you come to a footbridge which transports you across the M6 motorway.
From here, go right, following the road until you reach Highgrove Avenue. Turn into it, and follow it to the end when you can continue through the gate into another field. Carry on along the path, which goes down and across a footbridge, then turn right and follow the path all the way to Red Lane.
The bridge deposits you in the grounds of Park Hall, where you take an immediate left to follow the driveway out onto Park Hall Road. It’s here that you’re promised a good view of Camelot – the now defunct amusement park first opened its gates in 1983, delighting families with medieval fun for decades before dwindling visitor numbers caused it to close for good in 2012. Some of the rides – including the 80ft Knightmare rollercoaster – still stand today, visible from the motorway and nearby
Once you emerge, turn right again until you reach an unnamed lane, then take another right. This lane leads you to the gates of a farm at the far end; head left over the stile and follow the path straight up to the M6, turning right to the bridge.
48 Once over the bridge, head left over another stile, then follow the path until you reach one more. Climb it, then keep to the right of the field until you reach the Old Hall Lane stile – watching out for any stray sheep coming out of the fog, of course! A left turn takes you back to the A49, and an ideal place to grab some refreshments if you’re feeling peckish. The Bowling Green pub offers a cosy, familyoriented environment which is perfect for warming up. At the main road, go left and cross into Delph Lane, which winds all the way around to Church Lane. Take one last right and continue back to your starting point – and make sure to turn the heaters up for the journey home!

Pets
“If you love animals, you should do it for free…” At our practices, we frequently hear similar sentiments to the one above. And we truly do care. But we must charge for our services. Please remember that if your animal requires seeing as a true emergency, we will never turn you away – no matter your financial circumstances.
cost, but whether you can afford its ongoing care. We’d urge you to take out pet insurance- it is a God send when the unexpected happens. When looking at insurance, make sure you scrutinise the policy details – not all policies are created equal – and remember that some procedures can cost thousands of pounds.
However, there is unfortunately no NHS for animals. As a nation, we are lucky to receive the vast majority of our healthcare for free, or a small set fee. This masks the true cost of the services we receive (which are high, and highlight how lucky we are to have it), and possibly makes that big vet bill a little more shocking.
We would love to provide the necessary tests, procedures or medication for every animal, regardless of cost. It makes us sad when we can’t, and we always strive to work out ways to (safely) keep the bill down. But unfortunately we could not survive as a business without charging for our services.
Vet practices are run as private businesses. They have huge overheads- the cost of staff and premises, not to mention keeping a stocked pharmacy and investing in equipment which often costs tens of thousands of pounds. Our staff have their own families (human and furry!) to support. They couldn’t do this without earning a wage. Contrary to popular belief, most vets are not driving home to their country mansions in their top of the range Porsches! Vets qualify with the same level of student debt as human doctors, but cannot expect the same wage. Prior to getting any pet, consider not just the initial

HONDA
CR-V HYBRID by Tim Barnes-Clay
Diesel seems to be dying, and that’s a shame for a lot of people. There are a lot of good diesel-driven cars out there, and the scrapyard is where government leaders would like to see them. Therefore, it seems odd that automakers are still churning them out. Indeed, many of the car launches I go on include oil-burners. However, that’s not the case with Honda. The Japanese firm has committed itself to an electrified future and claims that by 2025 two-thirds of its
European transactions could encompass electrified vehicles (EVs). The brand aims to usher in a full urban EV later next year, but its first step towards this new age is a hybrid version of the CR-V. The model is in its fifthgeneration, and the hybrid powertrain is already housed within the Accord saloon in the United States. That means it’s a proven unit, so its debut in the CR-V over this side of the pond looks like a safe bet.
51 The system is named Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD), and it facilitates a trio of drive settings. All-electric can be selected in EV Drive, but only for limited amounts of time, due to the minuscule
body roll in corners. Generally, it feels like a decent set-of-wheels, though, and that’s where most of its allure lies. The CR-V Hybrid’s 51.4mpg fuel efficiency isn’t earth-shattering, but it’s comparable with most
1kWh battery bundle. Hybrid Drive utilises the clout of the 2.0-litre petrol engine, which runs at low revs to run one of the Honda’s electric motors. This then produces the muscle used by the other motor for momentum. Engine Drive shuts a clutch to allow the front axle to be propelled by the petrol motor, while the transmission is a single fixed ratio transmission. Both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive versions are offered.
similarly-sized diesel-driven vehicles. It’ll be easier on the pocket than the standard petrol-propelled version, that’s for sure.
So, in Hybrid Drive, the simplest way to understand how the Honda powertrain works is to imagine it being akin to a hydrogen fuel cell car – but, instead, it’s using petrol to produce a charge for the electric motor.
Keep an eye out for the new CR-V Hybrid – you can order it now, but it officially goes on sale in the UK in February 2019.
The CR-V Hybrid favours EV Drive or Hybrid settings when it’s not on the motorway. This means the engine is either not running, or it’s just trickling power to the battery pack. But the best bit is that the Honda automatically sorts through its trio of modes depending on what your driving is like - and the changes are virtually flawless. If driven conservatively, the CR-V Hybrid is a hushed and comfy car. The cabin is refined, and the switchgear falls easily to hand. The paddles behind the tiller enable you to change the intensity of the energy recuperation system, as well. There’s also a Sport setting, which is meant to give a quicker throttle response – but its influence is minimal. The ‘green’ Honda rides pleasantly and absorbs potholes well, but the heavy car does suffer from
Alas, practicality isn’t as good with the CR-V Hybrid. This is because the environmentally-friendly power system cuts into the Honda’s boot space, slashing it from 561 litres to 497 litres. There’s a lot of handy room in the cabin, though - and leg and headspace in the rear are better than ever.

Gardening
Project
garden
by Angie Barker

I love this time of year. Perennial plants are pushing up through the borders, spring flowering shrubs are swelling with buds and the birds are singing again. Our interest in the garden, which lets face it has waned over the winter months, starts to re-ignite. And what better way to fuel your interest than a garden project. A garden does not need a complete makeover to breathe new life into it but something which just revives your enthusiasm. Here are some suggestions: • Change the shape of your lawn to create new borders – this is an instant transformation and you will feel like you have a new garden • Create a herb garden – be aware that some tender herbs like Basil won’t thrive outside until the summer months but you can buy a variety of hardy types at this time of year such as Thyme and Rosemary • Take out say a dozen of your existing plants (depending on the size of your garden) and buy new ones – with different colours and texture • Revive your seating area with new rattan furniture which you can leave out all year round. Add stylish pots and plant Phormiums and Bamboo for a contemporary, lush look
Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.
• Grow some early potatoes, they are so easy to grow in pots or bags and the first time you taste your home grown new potatoes is amazing. You need to buy seed potatoes - don’t try planting ones you get from a supermarket. Tried and tested varieties include ‘Charlotte’ and ‘Casablanca’ • Create a haven for wildlife. Log piles, nest boxes and bird tables are easy to place in the garden and children love being involved • Screen the ugly shed in the corner and the wheelie bins and erect some trellis with some pretty climbers to scramble over it • Create a focal point. Place a large urn or bird bath in gaps in planting or at the end of a path As for Hubby and me, yes we may have been together for a long time now but is our interest waning …. do we need a project ... do we heck as like!
