The lawn

T

ranger

hey’ve done it again. Every year it happens. It’s as inevitable as the sun rising in the morning and yet they always beat me to it. I’m talking about neighbours mowing their lawns. For me, it’s a tad early but now the firing gun has been activated at Acacia Close. See, the over-wintered lawn can lull you into a false sense of security. While not looking as lush as it does in say mid July, it appears reasonably orderly until the Joneses at number 20 whip out the Flymo (disclaimer: other brands are available) and make your patch of God’s earth seem like an unkempt mess. I had considered knocking on just before Christmas in order to suggest that we may have a peace treaty until perhaps mid April. Alas, amid the melee of seasonal doings, I forgot about it and am now cursing myself. I do realise the above is what most people would file under ‘First World Problems’ but they don’t understand my pain. I want to get out there and give the lawn a good lashing but am constrained by the fact that, at this time of year, by the time I get home, it’s either teeming down or the best of the daylight is behind me. Yes, there’s the weekends but once the neighbours start cutting, they can be two or three mows ahead of me by the time I’ve retrieved the strimmer from the depths of the shed. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that this year they have, yet again, beaten me, but I shall be calling round next winter with a peace offering and a firm plan of action. Hopefully, they’ll say yes, otherwise I’ll have to drink that bottle of sherry myself...

£800k funding unclaimed More than £800,000 of anti-flooding funding has gone unclaimed in Croston. Figures released by Chorley Council show that 170 properties didn’t apply for a Property Level Resilience Grant. The PLRG was set up in the aftermath of the devastating Boxing Day floods of 2015. The purpose of this funding was to help homeowners and businesses fund measures that would make their properties more resilient to future flooding. A grant of up to £5,000 was available to each eligible property. A total of 426 properties in the borough were confirmed as flooded as a result of Storm Eva on 26

December 2015. Across Chorley, 216 applications were received. At the monent, 182 of these have been paid out. A report to councillors also highlighted some of the works carried out since Storm Eva. They include: - Gullies cleaned at Coppull Moor Lane, along with screening installed at Chapel Lane, Coppull - Flood reduction measures are being looked at for Eccleston - Gullies cleared and root cutting carried out at Pompian Brow, Bretherton. The report added: “These totals include unclaimed grants for properties in Croston where a grant application has not been made by the owner despite a number of reminders being issued. The council

9 made a significant financial contribution of £1m to the Croston Flood Risk Management Scheme which is vital in reducing the risk of flooding to the community. “The Croston Flood Risk Management Scheme which is now complete. This scheme decreases the river level through Croston during a flood event by restricting the amount of water flowing through the new structure and embankment, holding back the water in a flood storage basin upstream. The defences were put into operation for the first time over the weekend of October 21 and 22, successfully protecting the residents and the community. It is expected the likelihood and severity of flooding will be significantly reduced. There may still be some issues with surface water flooding which will be duly considered and investigated once we have a heavy rainfall event.”

Doctor in the house? A GP surgery in Chorley could be on the move. Plans have been unveiled to relocate The Surgery - Chorley from Chorley Health Centre, on Collison Avenue to Ann James House, 32-34 St Thomas’ Road. The move already has the blessing of NHS Chorley and South Ribble CCG, but the GPs still need official planning permission from Chorley Council. Papers submitted in support of the bid say: “The site is located less than 300 metres from Chorley town centre and within a convenient walking distance for many existing patients. “The property has a car park at the rear with an access onto Royle Road and an access onto Harrington Road. There are also parking spaces within the site on the Royle Road side of the property.

Art exhibition An exhibition of artwork from students taught by recently retired Southlands High teacher Rob Edmondson takes place at Astley Hall from Saturday, May 5, to Wednesday, May 30. Viewing times are from noon noon-3.30pm and the preview is on Saturday, May 5, from 11am-noon. Admission is free and all are welcome.

“The proposed GP surgery will have a total of 10 consulting rooms although these will not be fully occupied. There will be three full-time staff and 16 part-time staff employed at the surgery. There will also be visiting professionals such as the midwife, podiatrist and a phlebotomist. The part-time staff will, typically, work a 4.5 hour shift for 3-4 days per week. The proposed change of use will generate a low number of vehicle movements onto the existing highway network and these will not have a material impact on the operation, or safety, of the existing highway network.”

Expansion on the menu Chorley Little Theatre will soon have additional space now plans have been approved. The council has approved plans to purchase the former Hyatt Restaurant for £115,000 and then lease it to Chorley Little Theatre. Hyatt Restaurant will be bought by Chorley council so the theatre can expand its space for productions, rehearsals, community groups and meetings. Ian Robinson, Chairman of CADOS, which owns and operates Chorley Little Theatre said: “Our current building has stood here for 108 years and we’ve filled every nook and cranny, so a bit more room to work in will be fantastic. “We’re excited about what we can do with the new room, and look forward to seeing how it develops, not just for us, but for the next generation of theatre users in Chorley.” Councillor Alistair Bradley, Leader of Chorley Council said: “Chorley Little Theatre is a great asset to Chorley and we can’t wait to see what the additional space will bring to the people of Chorley.”

bring your Lawns

W

to life

e all like to have a nice green weed free lawns but with the non-stop rainfall in the region since Autumn water-logging can pose a challenge to many lawns. High rainfall leaches out nutrients causing the grass to turn yellow. Grass is resistant and will usually recover but a little help goes a long way. Below are a few tips to help you plan and revitalise your lawns.

shade trim back to allow sunlight to the grass, an essential element for growth. The First Cut - The first cut should be high, just topping the sward to stimulate growth. Cutting lower than this will put the grass plants back into stress and slow the growth. Ensure your mower blades are sharp as blunt blades cause bruising and torn leaves which can look unsightly. As the temperature increases drop the blades to 2.5cm (1approx) and cut weekly. Lower than this will encourage moss and weeds. Add Nutrients - Apply a feed and weed dressing evenly over the lawn to stimulate growth.(Follow the manufacturer’s instructions) If the additive includes a moss retardant avoid getting the pellets on hard surfaces as it may cause an orange coloured staining which is unsightly.

Firstly Prepare - Rake off any debris, dead leaves etc with a flat tined plastic rake, then go over with a electric rake to remove more debris and moss. Following this, fork the lawn. These actions ensure airflow is moving around the grass plants and reduce the compaction beneath the surface, allowing better drainage and giving the plants an improved environment in which to thrive. Consider the plants and bushes around the edges of the lawns. If any are over-hanging and casting

Undertake any Repairs - Check for bald patches and broken borders. These can all be repaired when the temperature reaches 8 degrees with a mixture of topsoil, sand and seed. (Small bags are now available from garden centres containing a preprepared mixture.) After applying the mixture firm down to create contact between the seed and soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Relax... or Need Help? - Time to relax, or if in doubt, call the professionals. GreenThumb (Lancashire West) has been operating in this area since 1999 and can draw on its wealth of local knowledge to offer advice and recommend lawn care treatments using qualified staff, specially prepared additives and professional equipment.

In fact, had we been here in 50 AD, the peace would have been shattered by the sound of hundreds of Roman soldiers making their way through the farmland.

“It’s quite something when you think about it,” says my guide, Bill Aldridge, who has studied the possible routes for over 30 years. “The road would have been used by the Roman military on their way in between Wigan, which was a Roman fort, and their next fort at Walton-le-Dale.”

37 Research proves that such a route existed, however parts of it are still unclear. For instance, it’s widely assumed that the A49 is the original Roman road, but that’s only partly true. “The Romans tended to go in as straight a line as possible, and the A49 doesn’t,” says Bill. “It twists and turns a fair bit. So while there’s a suggestion that the A49 going through Euxton is part of the route, there are other bits which aren’t. That explains why we’re on a dirt track off Coppull

Could another road run under Healey Nab?

Moor Lane!”

“Who has bragging rights to Coccium?” It’s believed the route starts at the junction of Mesnes Street and Kenyon Road in Wigan. Going past Gidlow Cemetery, it cuts across the A49 at Standish, going past the Parish Church and continuing its journey north until Hic Bibi Well, at the bottom of Hic Bibi Lane in Coppull Moor. It then crosses Spendmore Lane in Coppull, Clancutt Brook and then Chorley Lane and Church Lane in Charnock Richard. From there it veers towards Pincock and off out to Leyland. So that’s one route which almost every expert can agree on. But there is another which does divide opinion. And it mostly centres on who has bragging rights to the Roman town name of ‘Coccium’.

Bill takes up the story: “It is generally accepted that there were three Roman Roads leading into Wigan. These were traced and identified in the 19th century, including one between Ribchester and Manchester. “Wigan is not on the direct route between these two places so, not surprisingly, over the years other places, such as Blackrod, have claimed Coccium. “The existence of this road is based on an Itinerary which mentions a distance of 20 Roman Miles between Bremetennacum (now Ribchester) and Coccium. “Various alignments in the direction of Ribchester have been looked at over the years. In the early 1980s, Chorley Society thought they had found the road on Healey Nab being possibly four yards wide, although they only excavated one side. They uncovered kerbing travelling for some distance in the direction of Heapy; this is where previously a hoard of Roman coins were found and also a silver necklace which is now in the British Museum. “So it’s thought this road would have gone through places like Adlington and White Coppice.

The Roman route runs through Hic Bibi

“A few pieces of evidence point to the existence of this road. On the direct route there are four occurrences of ‘street’ or ‘causeway’ names. The first at Rivington was regarded as a Roman road continuing further north along Heapey Fold Lane. The next is at Causeway House Farm at Heapey. Finally at Causeway Farm near Riley Green – an old raised road is reported descending to a ford across the River Darwen below Lodge Farm – it apparently known as the ‘Roman Ford’. It is lost across the golf

The story of Hic Bibi Meaning ‘Here I drink’ in Latin, it’s said that it was given its name by Oliver Cromwell rather than the Romans. Legend has it that Cromwell stopped to drink from the nearby well as he chased the Scots though Wigan after the Battle of Preston in 1648. However, as the land surrounding the well belonged to local monks, some believe that they named it during the 17th Century. Today, a stone marks the site.

World Parkinson’s

uhammad Ali, Michael J. Fox, Neil Diamond and Billy Connolly are just a handful of people affected with Parkinson’s disease. Not many people are aware of the extent of the condition, and so, as World Parkinson’s Day falls on Wednesday, April 11, and Parkinson’s Awareness Week is between Tuesday, April 10 and Monday, April 16, it’s time to raise awareness. Parkinson’s sees parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years and the

disorder is thought to affect around one in 500 people, many of whom start to develop symptoms aged over 50. It’s a complex condition that affects people differently, with a wide variety of physical symptoms. Not everyone will experience every symptom, and the order symptoms appear and how they progress also vary.

45 About Parkinson’s There’s currently no cure for Parkinson’s and it’s unclear as to why people get the condition.

There are a number of different treatments, therapies and support available to help people with Parkinson’s to manage the condition.

Some motor symptoms may include: tremor, slowness of movement, rigidity, bladder and bowel problems, fatigue, freezing, muscle cramps and dystonia, restless legs, sleep problems and speech and communication issues.

Different therapies will appeal to different people, so try things out and see what works for you.

Alongside physical symptoms, Parkinson’s can have non-motor symptoms, ranging from depression and anxiety to hallucinations, memory problems and dementia.

Your GP, specialist or Parkinson’s nurse may be able to refer you to a therapist. Always speak to them before you start any course of therapy.

When it comes to treating Parkinson’s, everyone’s experience is unique, so you may need to try different drugs, treatments and therapies to find out what works best for you.

With World Parkinson’s Day falling on Wednesday, April 11, Parkinson’s organisations and supporters around the world are coming together on a bigger scale than ever before to show what Parkinson’s truly is.

Your specialist or Parkinson’s nurse can give you tailored advice based on your lifestyle and symptoms.

Therapists are trained to provide advice and recommend exercises and treatments to keep you active and healthy.

What happens next?

Parkinson’s UK’s aim for 2018 is to use World Parkinson’s Day as a platform to unite and mobilise

46 the global Parkinson’s community, making a positive difference to the lives of people with Parkinson’s. There are many opportunities to fundraise for this worthwhile cause up and down the country, to get involved, please www.parkinsons.org.uk/get-involved/fundraising This World Parkinson’s Day, join the global Parkinson’s community and #UniteForParkinsons. 47 around the world. How to get involved You can join your own national or local Parkinson’s association or support group. On World Parkinson’s Day, get involved online by using the hashtag #UniteForParkinsons on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any social channel. Encourage your friends and followers to get involved too. Share a message about why you’re uniting for Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s Awareness Day is the biggest opportunity of the year to reach more people affected by Parkinson’s and change public attitude of the disease. Parkinson’s UK says “We are stronger together.” Now it’s time to #UniteForParkinsons Celebrities diagnosed with Parkinson’s Neil Diamond announced on January 22, 2018, that he was retiring from touring because of a recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. He was on a 50th anniversary tour. In a statement he said: “It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert touring. I have been so honoured to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years.” The fresh faced actor of the 1980s Michael J. Fox is one of the most well-known people with Parkinson’s disease. Though many diagnosed with Parkinson’s are aged between 40 and 60, Fox was diagnosed in 1991 aged 29. He told the world about his youngonset Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 1998, and in 2000, founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Beloved boxer Muhammad Ali coped with shaking hands and mobility challenges long before he retired from the sport in 1981. In 1984, doctors diagnosed Ali with Parkinson’s disease, and the boxing champ passed away in June 2016. Scottish actor and comedian Billy Connolly continued on with his career after his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2013 at age 70. He first found out he had Parkinson’s when a fan noticed his symptoms and talked to him about showing the early signs of tremor.

ASK AMANDA

Amanda is the Registered Care Manager for Independent Living – she answers your questions.

How long should my mum’s care calls last? ANSWER. We work with our customers and their family to decide on the appropriate times and length of care calls. Some people in the care sector suggest that quality care cannot be delivered in under 1 hour. However, at Independent Living we believe in putting the customer in control, if the tasks can be completed in 30 or 45 minutes we do not see any problem with this. As an ethical company we do not want to charge a customer for 1 hour if they only require 30 minutes, and only want to pay for 30 minutes. We do not see how “ a carer trying to find something to do” in the surplus time equates to “quality care”. If a customer absolutely insists we can complete 15 minute care calls but Independent Living always advises that the minimum should be 30 minutes.

However, care calls do have a social aspect to them. If the customer enjoys the carer’s company and wants to chat a care call of an hour may be the option. We can also provide different call durations at different times of the day. For example, getting a person up, dressed and providing breakfast in a morning may take an hour but a teatime microwave meal from Wiltshire Farm Foods may just require a 30 minute call. We can also provide blocks of care. This can be several hours whilst a family member takes a break. We can also provide overnight care which is typically 9 hours (10pm t0 7am) although this can be altered to suit the client.

If we can help please call Amanda 01257 696 050

N

ick Knowles, best known for his 18 years fronting BBC One home-improvement stalwart DIY SOS, is not what many would picture when the word ‘vegan’ comes to mind. “You tend to think that most vegans are petite, small, slim people, and I’m not,” “I’m a 46-inch chest, 6ft 2in, 17-stone rugby player!” His lifestyle has been turned upside down since filming BBC Two’s The Retreat, which saw him and a diverse group of participants head to a health centre in Thailand, ditching cigarettes, caffeine, alcohol and meat and replacing them with yoga, lots of vegetables and hikes through the mountains. He lost nine kilos in three weeks, his cholesterol levels fell by a third, and his blood pressure dropped to a healthy level. Since then, Knowles has maintained a ‘flexitarian’ diet, meaning he largely eats vegetarian or vegan meals but will occasionally have meat or fish. It’s a big change for a man who used to eat a sausage, bacon and egg roll on his way to work, snack on scotch eggs, and regularly go out for steak lunches. His first cookbook, Proper Healthy Food: Hearty Vegan And Vegetarian Recipes For Meat Lovers, focuses on this huge shift. “If you could do one day a week as being veggie,

“You’re never going to encourage people if every time they fail, you batter them over the head. I’ve been saying more carrot less stick. Or you could say, more carrot less steak!” And the father-of-four feels the message is too important to be deterred.

congratulations, you should get a pat on the back,” he reasons. “You’ve reduced your meat intake, that’s fantastic. If you can do it two or three days a week, even better.

“I know the health benefits that come from eating a more plant-based diet are so important that we have to get past all of that rubbish, and encourage people to start eating meat-free once a week.

“If you could get to a point where you’re meat-free during the week and only treat yourself to meat during the weekends... when I say something like that, the Vegan Society goes, ‘What? Treat yourself to dead animals?’

Inspired? Here are two recipes from Knowles’ new book to try at home (cheese-free versions optional!). Proper Healthy Food: Hearty Vegan And Vegetarian Recipes For Meat Lovers by Nick Knowles is published by BBC Books, priced £14.99.

Winter Veggie Stew with Wholesome Lumpy Dumplings Serves 6 Ingredients For the dumplings: 50g butter, softened 125g self-raising flour 40g Cheddar, crumbled 1 tbsp thyme leaves For the stew: 3tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, roughly diced 2 celery sticks, roughly diced 3tbsp plain flour 1tbsp Marmite 1/2tbsp tomato puree 2L hot vegetable stock 3 carrots, peeled and chopped into chunky pieces 4 parsnips, peeled and chopped into chunky pieces 1/2 head swede, peeled and chopped into chunky pieces 3 small sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped into chunky pieces 2-3 rosemary sprigs, plus extra, chopped, to sprinkle 1 bouquet garni (available from good supermarkets) 150g orzo pasta (available from good supermarkets) 80g pack of cooked chestnuts, roughly chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method Start by making the dumplings. Rub the butter into the flour and mix with the Cheddar and thyme. Add just enough cold water to bring the mixture together to a soft dough and divide into five to six small dumplings. Preheat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 6. Heat the oil in a large casserole dish and fry the onion and celery over a low heat for 10 minutes until soft and translucent. Add the flour into the pan, whisking constantly to make a roux. Add in the Marmite and tomato puree followed by the stock, a glug at a time, whisking all the while to make a smooth base to the stew. Throw the carrots, parsnips, swede, sweet potatoes, rosemary and bouquet garni to the dish and bring to a boil. Cook the stew, with the lid off, for five to seven minutes. The vegetables should be cooking nicely but still have a bite to them. Rinse the orzo pasta well, in a sieve, and then pour into the casserole along with the chestnuts. Season well and place the dumplings on top of the casserole. Sprinkle over a little chopped rosemary and bake in the oven, with the lid off, for 20-30 minutes until the dumplings are puffed up and nicely cooked, and the vegetables are tender.

Macaroni, Leek & Parsley Cheese

Method Preheat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6.

Serves 4 - 6 Ingredients 300g macaroni 500g leeks, trimmed and cut into 1-2cm crescents 50g unsalted butter 50g plain flour 600ml semi-skimmed milk 100g British mature Cheddar, grated 3tbsp roughly chopped flat leaf parsley 2tbsp golden breadcrumbs Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Cook the pasta in a pan of boiling water for three to four minutes before adding the leeks to the pot and continuing to cook for a further five minutes. Drain the pasta and leeks and set aside. Meanwhile, make the white sauce. Melt the butter in a medium pan and stir in the flour. Cook for one minute until thick, then, off the heat, gradually whisk in the milk, keeping the mixture smooth. Return the pan to the heat and stir constantly until thickened. Simmer for two minutes, remove from the heat, and add 75g of the Cheddar, the pasta and leeks. Stir through the parsley and season well before spooning into a 2L ovenproof dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs and remaining cheese over the pasta and cook in the oven for 15-20 minutes, until the top is crisp and golden, and the sauce is gently bubbling.

Ashton &

Bamfurlong W

ith words being the tools of my trade, I despise clichés. Indeed, I avoid them like the plague. So that’s why this month’s walk, despite being reasonably hidden and displaying gem-like qualities, shall not be described as ‘a hidden gem’. I’m not sure what descriptive tag it deserves though. Maybe I’ll think of one later on. Anyway, to the task in hand...

by David Sudworth I know the Ashton and Bamfurlong area well, having grown up a few miles away, so wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary. By the end though, I had a whole new perspective. Our starting point for this 6.6 miler was the Three Sisters Recreational Area, off Lockett Road. We took advantage of the free parking just by the pond and play area, and started our hike by going in north easterly direction towards Bryn Hall Farm. Once out of the main Three Sisters parkland, it’s a short walk before turning right. At this point really have to keep your eyes open, as the public right of way is not only unsigned, but it also has a gate which at first glance appears to be a sturdy, boundary fence from the adjacent house (see photo to the right). Thankfully, a friendly farm worker was nearby and advised us to push on it, which we did, and it sprang open. Once you’re through the gate and past the property you follow the track down and round to the right. Now the walk starts to feel a lot more rural with fields of crops and live stock. Here we got a real sense of nature when, out of the undergrowth, a young deer crossed our path. It scarpered very

62

quickly - much too rapid for our normally superagile lens man Peter - but what a treat. Of all the beautiful and rural places I’ve visited doing Jack’s Tracks, the last place I expected to see wild deer was on the fringes of Ashton! We continued until our path did a bit of a dog leg. The vast expanses of wheat crops, evident in the earlier part of our walk, continued to carpet the fields as far as the eye could see. It could have been a scene from North America rather than little ol’ Wigan. If only George Orwell could have seen it. We eventually emerged opposite Abram Bryn Gates School where there was a handy pedestrian crossing to take us over into Furlong Close, a small cul-de-sac with neat dormer bungalows. We turned right into Epsom Drive (I sensed a horse racing theme going on here) and carried on into the field

63 and it’s therefore easy to take the wrong one. For our suggested route, stick to the path which is closest to this side of the embankment. From here, it’s a very straight route south on a formal path before it veers south west towards Riding Lane. While on this section, our eyes were drawn to the presence of a commemorative stone laid to the left of the path, and surrounded by loose bricks. It reads: “P. W. DAVIES. BORN EDGE GREEN 9 JULY 1889. DIED

in front. After two minutes, we arrived at a copse, went over the footbridge and turned a sharp left. Although the vegetation in the area was extremely well developed and dense, the route was amazingly clear. By this point, the sound of Virgin trains whizzing up and down the West Coast Main Line could be heard up the steep embankment yonder. Once you get to the bridge, which goes underneath the tracks, just be aware that there are a few paths

64 CHESTER 18 NOVEMBER 1944. AT HIS REQUEST HIS ASHES WERE SCATTERED NEAR HIS BIRTHPLACE. A WORTHY SON OF LANCASHIRE. A GREAT THINKER.” There are no further details on the background of this particular gentleman, but as far as final resting places go, he chose a lovely spot. We finally went past some farm buildings and a house on the right before coming to Edge Green Road/Riding Lane. A combination of weary feet and the sight of a rural pub is hard to resist, and so the gravitational pull towards The Harrow Inn pub proved too much for our aching limbs to fight against. As it was a warm, bright day, we sat outside on one of the many benches, nursing a refreshingly cold cola and plotting our way back. We found that from here, it was a virtual straight line back; down Riding Lane, back across the A58, past Lily Lane Farm and into the formal Three Sisters Recreation Area. Look out for the bird watching area on the left hand side – some of the species indicate a twitchers’ paradise. Once back at the car park, there’s the option of feeding the ducks or letting the little ones burn off any energy they may still have stored away by letting them loose in the play area. As I said at the outset, it’s hard to believe that in an area known for its industrial past, so much countryside is still not only in place, but also actively used and harvested. As a born and bred Ashtonian, it certainly opened my eyes. Never again will I solely think of traffic jams when asked to describe my hometown. But let’s get one thing straight, despite all this I’m still not labelling the walk ‘a hidden gem.’ That would be far too trite. More like an undiscovered diamond...

Veterinary

prescriptions What you need to know...

C

lients often ask us about buying medication for their pets from other sources – usually the internet. Here are some things to consider before taking the plunge: • Is it appropriate for my pet? Written prescriptions aren’t usually appropriate for one-off treatments, where we’ll need to be seeing your pet frequently, and often making adjustments to their medication. • Is it actually cheaper? Given that huge online retailers often buy in bulk which practices cannot, buying their medication online can be cheaper, especially if your pet is on a long term treatment. However, please bear in mind that prescription only (POM-V) medications can only be supplied following receipt of written prescription from your vet. Vets do charge for this, as it takes some time for the issuing vet to complete, and this price must be factored into any calculations. • Where is the medication coming from? The Veterinary Medicines Directorate have a list of approved retailers, and any reputable online retailer should display this clearly. Don’t buy from sources which don’t appear on this list. If it’s a prescription medication they should always ask to see the prescription. If it is a non-prescription product that still requires a suitably qualified person to supply it (NFA-VPS), then a credible retailer should ask you questions about your pet e.g. their weight and age. Be aware that some websites (often based abroad) claim to supply POM-V products without a prescription, but there is no guarantee the product you are receiving is genuine, and

importing veterinary medicines without the correct paperwork could constitute an offence. If you’re concerned or unsure which category your pet’s medication falls into, ask your vet. • We’ll still need to see your pet! We have a duty of care to ensure that your pet is on the right medication, so even if you buy your medication online, we’ll need to see your pet regularly (and at least every six months) to check they’re doing well. If you’ve considered all the above and buying medication elsewhere is still right for you and your pet, then your vet will be happy to help. We are aware that the cost of caring for animals (especially those with long term conditions) can be high, and our number one priority is to ensure your pet gets the best possible treatment.

Skoda v

RS is the Skoda badge that denotes the Czech firm’s most powerful and capable models. vRS means performance, and the symbol commands a lot more respect than you might realise. In the Czech Republic, Skoda vRS models are admired for their toughness and performance, and in the UK, they’ve also garnered a real fanbase. Octavia vRS owners often state there’s probably no finer all-rounder on the market at this price point, and

they might well have a case. For under £30,000, you get a powerful 2.0-litre 184PS diesel engine mated to a decent automatic gearbox that helps put the power down via all-wheel drive. It handles nimbly for a larger car too, and is equally at home on a B road as it is on a motorway chewing up the miles. It’s not often you can say an estate car is handsome, but the Octavia vRS has a smart, modern, unaggressive look to it, despite being one of

Fast Facts • 0-62 mph: 7.7 secs • Combined mpg: 55.4 • Engine layout: 1968cc four-cylinder turbo diesel • Max. power (PS): 184 • CO2: 134 g/km • Price: £29,400

Skoda’s athletic models. You can notice the influence from Skoda’s owners - Volkswagen - in the styling of its newer models. In the same way that the Golf GTI and R models aren’t too aggressive, the Skoda isn’t either. Of course, Skoda is a very modest brand, so the confident and unassuming styling works well for it. Space is abundant in the Octavia estate; there aren’t many cars you can get for under £30k that can

reach 62mph in under eight seconds with a boot the size of a small cavern. There’s also room aplenty for human beings too, with the rear seats more than spacious enough for an adult to sit and relax in over a long journey. Really, if you need more car than this you probably need to consider a van or a minibus. So, the Skoda Octavia vRS is fast, it’s good to drive, it’s safe, and it’s got more space than your attic. At under £30,000, you’ll have serious difficulties finding a better all-rounder than this Czech folk hero.

Gardening JOBS FOR APRIL • Dig in a good layer of compost (5cm or more) to prepare for the growing season. • Pick off the last of your faded winter pansies to stop them setting seed which will encourage new flowers throughout spring. • Be mindful that there are still late frosts so cover any vulnerable plants. • Tie in any climbing and rambling roses to their supports. • Get rid of any weeds now - doing this early in the season should stop these being a bigger problem later on. • Start mowing your lawn now once a week with the blades at the highest setting and gradually lower them over the weeks.

HAVE A GO! Plant out some delicious sweet peas. If you haven’t grown these from seed already then get a few plants from your local garden centre and tie them with string to canes to get them going. Also try growing some peppers and aubergines this month in a polytunnel or greenhouse!

TOP TIP Terracotta pots absorb water, so a plant in a terracotta pot will dry out a lot quicker than one in a ceramic or plastic container. To stop this happening, line the pot with some plastic or an empty compost bag with holes punched in the bottom before planting. Adding gravel and small rocks at the bottom will encourage drainage and keep the soil moist for longer.
