Holidays

are coming I

t’s here, the most festive time of year, and even the Scrooges among us can’t hide anymore. It’s time to pull out our Christmas jumpers, drink mulled wine, eat until our sides split, you know, before the old “New Year, New Me” mantra comes into play in January. Throughout the month, we have the usual Christmas markets here and there, the opportunity to sing carols around Christmas trees, lots of opportunities to eat and be merry, and there’ll even be a pantomime or two to enjoy. This month is all about spending quality time with friends and family, indulging a little (but we all know our festive purchases may come close to breaking the bank), and if we’re lucky, catching up on some much needed relaxing after a hectic few weeks or even months. Although ‘tis the season to be jolly, December also gives us time to reflect on the past year and think about the things we hope to achieve in the next. Whether that’s a new job, new home, the holiday of a lifetime, or living life a little better than before. From all of us at Local Life, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Let’s make 2018 a great year.

Niamh Ollerton, Deputy Editor

Market forces Calls have been made to reinstate Chorley town centre’s Flat Iron car park. John Brennand, a market trader for 47 years, has been organising a petition urging Chorley Council to reinstate car parking spaces on the Flat Iron site and stop Market Walk development plans. Signatures have been collected from shopkeepers and market traders in the town, to present the petition to council leader Cllr Alistair Bradley. Mr Brennand also challenged Cllr Bradley to hold a public debate with shopkeepers, stall holders and shoppers alike to discuss the future of Chorley’s

town centre and the parking available. And since car parking spaces on the site have been removed to clear the way for retailers like TK Maxx and M&S, Mr Brennand thinks trade has declined. But the two retail giants have since withdrawn from the project, meaning the council’s hope to extend the Market Walk area was knocked back. His petition claims the project has been ‘a disaster – poorly planned and researched, and wasting public money. Cllr Bradley responded: “We’ve got to have in mind the long term aim – which we all share – which is to improve the offer and attract new visitors to give Chorley town centre a long term future.”

A wheelie good idea? Councillors will meet before Christmas over plans which could pave the way to a possible three week gap in nonrecyclable waste collections. Cash-strapped council chiefs are looking at a range of options ahead of their current £33m contract with Veolia finishing in March 2019. They’re hoping to reduce costs by some £250,000 in any new contract, and that could mean changing

collection schedules. One idea put to councillors is the option of having one week where no collections take place at all. Another idea is to change the green bin collections to week one and week four in a cycle, rather than the current routine of collections in week one and week three. Councillors will meet on December 14 to consider the next steps. A report to councillors spells out the challenges: “The existing waste management contract with

11 Veolia expires on March 31, 2019. This is a 10 year contract and the largest the council procures. “There are a number of unknowns such as what disposal facilities will be available, changes to legislation as a result of Brexit and what the likely cost of the new contract will be. “The council does not own a depot of a suitable size to house the vehicles and staff associated with a waste contract. The current service provider rent their depot; this gives the incumbent contractor, Veolia an advantage. “The number of suitably experienced contractors providing waste collection services is small and the tender needs to be attractively packaged to attract sufficient interest. There are a number of larger and more profitable contracts going out to the market at the same time as us. “The council does not own a depot of a suitable size to house waste collection vehicles and staff, the Bengal St depot could not accommodate both waste and street scene services. “Reduction in the frequency of recycling collections and the introduction of chargeable garden waste collections will have a negative impact on our recycling rate, 48% in 2016/17. The rate is likely to drop to between 28 to 38% further if some of the options outlined below are implemented. The current EU target is for 50% of household waste to be recycled by 2020. “Modelling these options does not commit us to making these changes but will give senior officers and Members indicative costs, what the service profile of vehicles, crews and recycling rate would be if implemented and the merits and risks of introducing these service changes. The tendering process is due to get underway in spring next year with a final recommendation being presented to councillors by the end of next summer.

£100k white Christmas A white Christmas could end up costing local taxpayers over £100,000 a day. That’s the stark figure from Lancashire’s highways bosses who revealed that even a precautionary treatment of the county’s ‘priority’ road network can top £12,000 a time. A report into preparations for winter said that there remains “a very high public expectation” about what the County Council can achieve in dealing with the effects of winter weather generally and during severe conditions in particular. The report adds: “The County Council budgets for a spend of £4million per year on the Winter

Service, which is based on the two previous years’ weather “Precautionary treatment of the whole priority network in advance of hoar frost or ice costs £12,000 per treatment. Precautionary treatment of the whole priority network in advance of snow is £32,000 per treatment. On the days when it snows, costs can exceed £100,000 per day. “There are approximately 160 staff on the rota, 53 of which are on call 24/7. These are directly employed by Lancashire County Council who also have daytime commitments. We currently have 24 farmers and contractors who have equipment to carry out snow clearing works on roads and who provided additional support at times when County Council resources are stretched.”

Shake up for NHS staff? Some Chorley hospital trust staff could have a new employer in future. Local NHS bosses are exploring “alternative delivery models” (ADMs) which may mean setting up a company limited by shares, limited partnerships or a contractual joint venture. Staff would be moved to the new employer under protected rights known as TUPE. They have however pledged it is “not a privatisation of Trust services, outsourcing or tax avoidance”. The plans are at an early stage, although Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, have agreed to broadly explore the idea. Papers presented to the Trust board said: “ADMs

are particularly common in local government as most councils no longer rely solely on in-house operations to deliver either public services or their own internal functions.” “Key benefits include improving quality in service delivery, increasing control and transparency without leakage of profits to private sector, enhanced staff engagement and morale: empowers staff giving them a more prominent voice and visibility with the Trust, opportunity to set attractive Terms and Conditions and potential to generate third party income. “Risks associated with ADMs are lack of support from leaders, lack of engagement from staff, wasted costs, negative reporting (which) damages

Full range of hinge door wardrobes

17 confidence, poor marketing and reputational loss. “TUPE is likely to apply to transfer of staff to a subsidiary company. It would include protection of existing T&Cs and pension arrangements. Some NHS subsidiary companies have guarantee lifetime protection on terms and conditions, others have been more aggressive on a review of these. “An ADM should enable the Trust to expand its business base, maximise managed service initiatives, secure VAT opportunities, offer career opportunities, ensure maximum potential for efficiencies on certain capital projects, encourage business links with suitable public and private business partners and be a vehicle for the development of joint commercial contracts.”

Game on for Chorley FC’s new stand? Official plans have been submitted for a new 75

key part of this experience. Guests must currently

seater stand at Chorley FC. The club, based on Duke Street, says it is looking to improve the match day experience for visiting supporters and sponsors. Papers lodged with Chorley Council planners says: “A new 75-seater stand is proposed for erection on the Ashby Street grass banking area. This will be aesthetically in line with the facilities already in place on the land. The stand will be filled by guests using a recently formed bar and catering facility, the 1883 Lounge. The new lounge area was created in the summer of 2017 to act as a new revenue stream for the football club and the new stand will form a

walk around to the main stand at the far side of the ground to watch a game; the new stand will help alleviate this issue. All match day supporters will be able to access the new facility and it will result in a positive addition to the community vision portrayed at Chorley Football Club. The structure will be built and installed by a company local to Chorley creating additional employment as part of the project.” Chorley Council says it expects to make a decision on the planning application before Christmas.

Come together after beetles hit St Michael & All Angels Church in Croston has now reopened following a major restoration scheme. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the project set out to eradicate death watch beetle that had badly affected roof timbers. Work started in June. Over the next few months, an educational programme, regular open days and events are also planned to open the church more regularly and to inform visitors about the history of the church. Normal services will resume in church on Sunday, December 3, at 9.15am. Also, the church will be

hosting its annual Christmas Tree Festival on Saturday, December 2, and Sunday, December 3, between 11am and 4pm. Church warden Andrew Marston said: “We’re delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has enabled us to complete this major project. The Church has been very much at the heart of our village community for centuries and it’s great to know that it is now preserved for future generations. It also now gives us the opportunity to open it up more to schools and other visitors to learn more about our church and its history, as well as for the benefit of our community”

Poll position A polling station in Chorley South West Ward is set to be moved. Plans are afoot to move the station from Gillibrand Primary School to Buttermere Community Centre. A report to councillors said: “The opening of the new Buttermere Community Centre on Buttermere Avenue has given us the opportunity to move away from the current polling station at Gillibrand Primary School thereby eliminating disruption to the school on polling day. The centre is owned by the council and would be a good polling station venue with the change being a straight forward swap.” A request to consider the use of Anderton St Joseph’s Primary School as an addition polling station in the Adlington and Anderton Ward was deferred.

Online fostering push An online push has been launched for more foster carers in Chorley. Lancashire County Council says it is in need of people to step forward as around 20 children are going into care every week locally. New foster carers can expect to receive between £241 and £300 per week for each child they care for. No formal experience or qualifications are needed to be a foster carer, all you need is a spare room available and a desire to make a difference. Recruitment priorities for Lancashire and the region include places for: brothers and sisters – including sibling groups of 3 or more children/young people.; Older children/young people – over half of all looked after children are 10 or older; children from black and ethnic minority backgrounds, in particular black or Asian children and increasingly those from new migrant communities. Park life A Croston car park is to stay public for at least until the year 2142! The village parish council has signed a 125 year lease on the land next to the medical centre on Out Lane. It will now be looking at what works are needed to be carried out on the car park. The parish council said: “We have, at last, made progress on taking over the car park to make sure this very valuable parking area remains available for public use. The parish council has signed a 125 year lease for the land with Lancashire County Council and, in the next few weeks, we’ll be looking at what work needs to be done to improve the area including possible resurfacing and carrying out landscaping in conjunction with our friends at Croston in Bloom.”

PROTECTION

WHAT IS INCOME PROTECTION

Protecting your income is the least known but most welcome form of disability or illness financial protection. Just think about it, if your income is protected then so is your lifestyle. Without your income, expenses such as the mortgage, pension plans, savings, car payments, utility bills are all in jeopardy. Add the cost of children and loss of income is frightening. Long term income protection can protect all the essentials. It is individually underwritten, meaning your premiums are calculated based on your personal circumstances.

Insurers assess your job, level of income needed, health, current age and planned retirement age. Applicants are often surprised how affordable it is. If you are unable to work through illness or disability then benefits are paid out after an agreed deferred period, and are free of tax to you. They are paid out till you recover, retire or die, whichever happens first. All working people should consider the affects of a loss of income. If your employer only pays sick pay for a few weeks, or you work for yourself then you are very vulnerable without it.

Day I saved JFK’s

life

David Sudworth meets the Chorley man who thwarted an assassination attempt on the US president

T

hey say a picture paints a thousand words, but for years there was a wall of silence around the black and white image Chorley man Colin Denby cradles in his hands. “It was taken at the request of JFK after I saved his life,” says Colin. “I’m on the left in the picture, and the other man is called Louis J. Demato. I’d never met him before, but his family knew the Kennedys. And the President wanted a photo

of me in my uniform, but having just an image of me on my own would have aroused suspicion. So I posed with Demato, and no-one batted an eyelid.”

was sent to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in France; the most prestigious posting in the British army.

Even before John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963, attempted plots to kill US presidents weren’t something new. Almost 100 years previously, Abraham Lincoln was himself gunned down.

Because of his growing athletic abilities, he undertook special operations.

“Security was always high around United States presidents, as there was always a chance that someone would try to kill them.” Colin, who turns 80 next year, was a member of the team who guarded the President during a visit to Nato HQ in France. Although a poorly child, and frequently belittled at school (“I was made to wear the dunce’s hat a number of times by a witch of a teacher”), he excelled at sports. When called up to do his National Service in June 1960 - one of the last to undergo compulsory conscription - he was sent to the Royal Military Police training depot at Woking, in Surrey. 16 weeks later, having passed all the tests, he

41 that point, I noticed a movement in the shadows at the edge of the room. I could then smell something, a mixture of tobacco, drugs and unwashed bodies, which was completely out of place in this setting. “It was a split second decision, so I turned and fired. Then, out of nowhere, a large number of people appeared and whisked the President away.

“Every key position at SHAPE was filled by Americans and all the deputy/secondary postings were filled by the British. That’s just the way it was. The Americans love a winner and, because I was picking up accolades and trophies for my running, they asked me to join special operations.” In 1961 - the same year JFK became US President - he visited his French counterpart, Charles De Gaulle, in Paris (pictured bottom right). “One of the heads of US security requested that I was put on the team. De Gaulle didn’t particularly like having Americans on French soil. He thought they were too brash and had too much money, but of course he didn’t mind taking it.

“A few days later I was summoned to see the President as he wanted to thank me personally. He said: ‘I’d like to reward you’; to which I replied: ‘No reward needed sir. I’m very impressed with what you are doing to help military veterans in your country so if there is a reward, please donate it to the veterans.’ “President Kennedy turned to one of his staff and said: ‘I think the United States has found a new son, do what he asks.’ “The President also wanted a photo of me, which is how I came to be pictured with Demato.” And as for the would-be assassin? “We were trained to maim, not kill, so they could be interrogated. I hit him on the knee and, I believe that once they’d finished with him, he was fed to

“I think the US has found a new son...” “At that time, there was a threat of Algerian terrorism as they were fighting for independence. To have killed Kennedy would have been a big coup for them. “JFK was hosting a huge banquet for SHAPE and NATO and after it had all finished I was doing patrols. I was walking through this huge hall at 3am, where the banquet had taken place just a few hours earlier, and I heard some giggles. I pulled out a revolver and then saw that it was JFK with a woman who I didn’t recognise. It certainly wasn’t his wife, Jackie Onassis, and her dress was somewhat askew. “I asked him whether everything was alright, but at

42 wild boars by the last remaining members of the French Resistance.” It’s fair to say that, since the early 1960s, life hasn’t been quite as dramatic work-wise for Colin. Having left the army at the end of his service, he became an electrician and has now been married to his childhood sweetheart, Brenda, for over 50 years. They both live on Preston Road. There’s been tragedy along the way though as one of their sons, Craig, was killed in a road accident in Chorley in the early 1980s when he was just 15. However, they donated his eyes and kidneys in the hope that others might benefit. A young boy from Luton received Paul’s kidneys and managed to track them down - something which had never been done before - resulting in all three of them appearing on breakfast TV with Anne Diamond and Nick Owen.

“ISIS can be stopped with the right people” Colin was also bound by the Official Secrets Act, which meant that his story couldn’t be told. In the case of the JFK assassination attempt, it was simply swept under the carpet as “something which never took place”. However, a conversation with friends led Colin to pen a book based on his experiences. The Price of Freedom is told through the fictional character Conrad Davenport, who develops from National Serviceman to Royal Military Policeman to Special Operations Soldier in Paris during the days of terrorist attacks against the West. “I didn’t do it as an autobiography because I actually don’t like reading autobiographies myself. It’s much easier to tell it in the third person. “My story seems incredible to the point that some people don’t believe me. They may think I’m a Walter Mitty character, but that’s up to them. I know the proof I’ve got at home in photos and documents, and what I saw with my own eyes.

So after his own exploits, I ask Colin what is, in his view, the price of freedom? “Vigilance,” he replies. “The world is very different now to when I was younger. People seem to have less respect. And the seeds of the terrorism we see today were there when I was serving. Can ISIS be stopped? Yes, if we had the right people to do the job.” The Price of Freedom (ISBN: 9781784553319) is available via www.austinmacauley.com/book/ price-freedom

Wine allergy is no

joke

By Keeley Bolger

I

t’s party season - but while hangovers are an inevitable punishment if you overdo it with the vino, sometimes unpleasant side-effects from a glass or two are down to something a bit more unusual. We’d all sometimes like to blame our sickly morning-after-the-night-before state on a ‘wine allergy’, but for a very small amount of people, an allergy to wine is a real (and inconvenient) truth. Unlike a sensitivity or intolerance, an allergy is when the immune system reacts to a normally harmless substance. In this case, that normally harmless, though tasty, substance is wine. Fortunately, a true allergy to wine is extremely rare, though as anyone who has ever had a bit of a session will attest, it’s entirely possible to display symptoms of it without being allergic.

46 WHAT ARE THE SIGNS? While many of us suffer diarrhoea, headaches and skin flushes after too many drinks, for some, these may be signs of an underlying intolerance to wine and the grapes involved in the production (though the jury is still out on whether skin flushing is indicative of an allergy). Those with the allergy may suffer cramps and difficulty breathing when they drink certain wines - though they may drink others and not have any reactions. WHAT CAUSES IT? It’s bad news for fans of red, as researchers found that those with the allergy tend to suffer more when they drink it as opposed to white wines or roses.

Rarely is the reaction caused by alcohol, more often it is the chemicals used in the wine-making process - that’s the sulphites and histamines - to keep bacteria at bay and stop the plonk from going sour which are the culprits (though, again, it is very rare to be allergic to sulphites). If you suffer from this allergy, you may also have a similar reaction to certain products that contain sulphites, like dried fruits, cider and pickled food. And while it is very uncommon, allergyuk.org reports that some people with asthma, urticaria and rhinitis might be more prone to allergies to alcohol than others.

47 WHAT CAN YOU DO? Short of corking your bottles, if you think you might be sensitive to wine, look out for those made using less of the preservative sulphites and histamines. Bear in mind that white wines and roses generally have higher levels of sulphites - as do some light-bodied reds - while reds tend to have higher levels of histamine. Organic wines and biodynamic wines are a good starting point as these tend to be made with fewer chemicals, though many bottles do not display this info. Make a note of any drinks you’ve had - including the type of wine, as well as what you’ve eaten, so you can pinpoint the problem bottles, and as always, it’s best to check with your GP if you have any concerns.

WELLBEING NEWS Nearly half of festive party-goers dreaming of a sexy Christmas A new survey by Superdrug has revealed that 41% of Brits are hoping for more sex this season than any other time of year. However, the retailer’s research also found that not everybody’s preparing to play it safe: only 30% said they plan to carry condoms, with 20% saying they feel there’s still a stigma around doing so, as carrying a condom implies you’re ‘up for it’. Superdrug is working with condom manufacturers Pasante, Dr Pixie McKenna and Love Island’s Alex

Bowen and Olivia Buckland to help remove the stigma and encourage people to ‘wrap it up’ this Christmas! They’ve created four festive condom prototypes (Festive Feast, Jingle Balls, Fur Lined and The Rudolph); visit onlinedoctor.superdrug.com/wrapit-up to vote for your favourite - and if demand’s high enough, the most popular will be produced next year. Meanwhile, some of the ‘non-festive’ condoms are currently on offer in Superdrug, from £3.49 (www. superdrug.com). Pasante marketing manager Louise Ball says: “Condoms are a must-have item for any Christmas night out, to keep you safe if the heat of the moment strikes!”

ASK AMANDA

Amanda is the Registered Care Manager for Independent Living – she answers your questions.

Can you provide help in 2018? YES. By the time you read this I’m sure many of you will be thinking about getting ready for Christmas and the New Year! At the festive time many families often spend more time together than they perhaps do throughout the rest of the year. It may well be that relatives come from other parts of the country to spend time with mum or dad. After not seeing a loved one for a while, and spending more time with them you may be surprised to notice they aren’t coping or as well as they once were. If you feel that someone could benefit from a little help at home we can offer support. It could be companionship for just a few hours a week, a trip out to the supermarket or help at a hospital appointment.

If more practical help is needed we can help a loved one get dressed, prompt medication, carry out housework, shop, prepare meals or help people take a shower. A factor often overlooked is that we can provide a flexible service. It may be that if someone feels unwell we can increase our calls, on the other hand they can be reduced or stopped if not required. Our support can be changed week-to-week. In certain locations calls can be as little as 30 minutes, on the other hand they can be for several hours, or even overnight.

If we can help please call Amanda 01257 696 050

Appley

Bridge by Niamh Ollerton

D

o you ever need an excuse to get out for a little while and enjoy an amble through the countryside? Myself and my colleague Peter both enjoy a good walk so heading over to Appley Bridge definitely didn’t feel like business. We booted up and parked up in Appley Lane North – which isn’t the easiest to do so keep your eyes peeled – and headed down the right hand side of the lane, made our way across the canal bridge and down towards the water. But be careful as you make your way down the bend towards the canal towpath as it’s very steep and, if there’s ice on the floor, you’ll be a goner. Keep walking along the canal towpath and admire

the canal water. There were no ripples in the water; it was clear as glass, with reflections of the trees and scenery you would only find in a mirror. We really did pick the most glorious day for a walk. I love walking along canals, as you never know the kinds of people you might meet, whether that’s families, cyclists or cheery ramblers with their energetic pups bounding along the path. There was a lot of activity at one of the lock gates with a handful of builders hard at work, where we noticed the brand spanking new lock gates waiting to be assembled. Carry on towards bridge 39 where you’ll leave the canal towpath, but prepare to lean forward. But do

59 take a second to admire the houses nestled close to the canal. These houses are dreamy if you like the peace and quiet. Continue over the bridge across the canal and head up Chapel Lane, until you get to the railway. We recommend waiting a minute and checking both sides of the track before crossing over just in case. But then again, train tracks interest me, so maybe that’s why I like to take it all in. Once the railway is behind you, you’ll continue up towards Wood Lane and this is where the first incline hits you. It’s not too bad, but this may be when you remove one of your layers on a sunny day. When you get towards the top you’ll need to go right and follow the lane which will take you towards Gillibrand House. Along the lane you’ll see Parbold church’s steeple, but you can also admire the rolling green landscape, which is the epitome of British countryside. Further on there’s a black Shetland pony in the field on your right and I jumped, or rather cantered at the opportunity the give it a stroke. Keep your eyes peeled. Passing Gillibrand House you’ll continue through the gates marking the right of way, carry on until you come to a gate with a no access sign on it. Here, the public footpath goes to the right and over a stile. This is where your walk will start to get slippery so keep your wits about you as you head over to the next stile. Said stile, might I add, is fine if you keep your feet to the steps, but don’t put all your weight on the floating bit of wood as I did, meaning Peter could have later had a mud pie for a passenger. Once over the dreaded stile, keep to the right hand side of the field and then straight across to the next. If there has been heavy rainfall, prepare for the muddy landscape as you search for the best spot to place your foot. Another comical fact; make sure your boots are laced tightly as you may lose one. Slow and steady wins the race here. These fields are used for livestock so if you have a dog with you please keep it on a lead. On the far side of the second field, you should be

able to make out a tall post marking the stile that takes you up to Fairy Glen. And if you haven’t been into Fairy Glen before, you’re in for a real treat. Once you’re over the stile, follow the path going over the brook and take a minute to listen to the calming sounds as the water trickles underneath you. Continue to follow the path towards the main attraction of this walk – the waterfall. In such a lovely setting among the trees, this waterfall is worthy of a film location. I’m thinking the live action version of Tarzan in sunny Appley Bridge. Follow the track with the waterfall on your right and make your way up the numerous wooden stairs, and continue along the path past the top of the fall to reach Finch Lane. Head down the lane towards the farm and see if you can spot an animal or two. At the farm entrance,

take the footpath on your left as you reach the final slog of your journey. Carry on walking along the footpath and cross the next two lanes. This will then bring you out at the top of Appley Lane North, where you’ll turn right and head down the lane until you’ve reached your starting point. Now you might want to give your shoes a good kick. As walks go, this is a comfortable walk, and on a clear day (with a little less mud), the sights of Parbold and Appley Bridge couldn’t be nicer.

Length of walk: 5 miles Difficulty: Medium Accessibility: The route includes a number of stiles and gates. We did the walk after some prolonged rainfall and there was some very muddy sections.

Mental

T

heath

his year was dedicated to mental health wellbeing in humans and many celebrities have shared their experience, including royalties. It all comes back to being able to discuss this sensitive subject freely with professionals and get help. So what about our four pawed friends? Well, mental health wellbeing is definitely a key factor for a happy pet... and a happy owner. When their mental health is not working well, we are facing behavioural problems: How many dogs are scared to go outside for a walk? How many dogs are petrified of loud noises (motorbike, fireworks, etc.)? How many dogs show aggression towards other dogs or strangers? How many dogs are ruling the household? How many dogs are destructive when you leave them alone? How many cats are biting and attacking their owner? Sounds ‘déjà vu’? Help is at hand for you and your pet. Behavioural changes can be linked to internal diseases. Lack of vitamins, liver disease, underactive thyroid can all cause behavioural changes. But these are not the most common causes. The behaviour of a pet will depend on his/her history and its experience in life. It will be closely linked to your behaviour towards him/her. Of course each case is unique and each animal can react differently to a situation; but if he/her gets in contact with many situations early in life, they are more likely to deal positively with them. This is called socialisation and should happen before 14 weeks of age. As soon as

he/she is vaccinated, take him/her out, let him/ her make friends with other dogs, other people and witness noisy motorbikes, bikes, running and shouting children, busy town centres, all the joys of modern life… Like a human, a healthy mind lives in a healthy body. Walks will develop his senses and keep him/her physically fit and more settled at home. Cats should be entertained with moving objects or shapes and should develop their predator instincts by chasing them. Games exists to keep their brain entertained, mostly based on rewards. Now, if despite a healthy balanced life things get out of hand, don’t be afraid to open up to your veterinary surgeon. He/she will be able to check if there is any medical causes for the behaviour. If not they will refer you to a behaviourist. It is important for the behaviourist to see the interaction between you and your pet within your everyday environment. And remember, admitting there is a problem is the first step towards a resolution.

Renault

T

Koleos by Tim Barnes-Clay

he Renault Koleos won’t rock your world, but it’s a decent enough SUV. It looks a bit too like many other SUVs out there – most noticeably the Skoda Kodiaq, but it’s an impressive car, nonetheless. I got behind the wheel of the flagship trim level – the Signature Nav, which has a generous amount of Kit, comprising big 19-inch alloy wheels, a sat-nav, a touchscreen and leather-bound seats. The car’s infotainment system, accessed via the touchscreen is easy and self-explanatory to use, and the Renault is practical, offering cubby holes and four USB slots. What’s more, the Koleos is endowed with good quality soft-touch plastics and the hide wrapping the seats and steering wheel is top notch.

out-and-out technology and cabin refinement. The layout is well thought out for driver and passengers, and room is more than respectable. The wheelbase is the same as the X-Trail’s at 2,705mm – and this equates to awesome legroom. Better still, the Koleos’ load area is 29 litres bigger than the Nissan’s – measuring 579 litres. Alas, take a tape-measure to the similar-looking Skoda Kodiaq and the Czechmade car’s boot is 630 litres. Oh well, you can’t have everything. Strangely the Gallic car brand isn’t providing the Koleos with a seven-seat option, though. This could be a deal-breaker as Skoda’s Kodiaq does. Renault gets away with it, however, by explaining that you can always go for the Grand Scenic if you need all those seats.

The top-of-the-tree 2.0 dCi 175 AWD X-Tronic Koleos I drove really is the bee’sknees, in terms of

On the road, the Renault Koleos is well-behaved and easy to like. Zero to 62mph arrives in 9.5 seconds and the top speed is 125mph, so the car has plenty of ‘go’ for motorway commutes

of potholes. But the squidgy springs don’t wreck the handling; if anything, the French SUV comes across as predictable and steady. The Koleos I drove had all-wheel-drive, so I also tested it off-road. Because the car has good ground clearance I could drive it over stones and hummocks without fear of ripping bits off the underneath of the Koleos. Furthermore, the Renault grips well in mud and anything not resembling tarmac. It’s no Land Rover, but it’s a great asset to have if you live in the sticks, or you plan on lugging a tin-tent to a grassy caravan park or suchlike. The Koleos is a car that is roomy and well-appointed. It also flies the luxury SUV flag for Renault. This means it could attract fresh customers to the brand who are looking for an SUV with a bit of French flair.

or for overtakes on lesser roads. The Koleos has 174 horses under its ample bonnet to provide such power, and this helps tug the car along, even with five-up and a fully laden boot.

Car Paintwork Repairs

The auto ‘box isn’t bad, even though it’s a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This means the transmission shifts through a constant range of ratios. Alas, CVTs don’t always work as seamlessly as they should, resulting in a rather jerky driving experience. Nevertheless, I’m pleased to report Renault has stuck an advanced CVT into the Koleos that uses technology to copy a sequential ‘box. This makes the car painless to operate. The Koleos’ ride is super comfy, with its soft suspension making you all but forget the existence
