New Chapter...

In this issue

Early into a New Year, it is fashionable for folk to print their predictions for the next 12 months. But personally, I will resist the temptation; reason being it promises to be a busy, yet unpredictable, year in many respects. The world economy is still fragile and even here at home, the road to recovery has not been smooth. Then there’s the General Election in May which is far from a forgone conclusion for any of the main parties.

Closer to home, although nobody is saying we are out of the woods yet, our High Streets do seem to have regained some of the confidence which, only a few years ago, appeared to be ebbing away at a rate of knots. Being in my position, you get to visit many areas there is definitely a resurgence going on. In many years, it seems that people have now rediscovered the charms and benefits of buying locally. It’s easy to forget that only a few years ago, the big supermarkets were throwing up out-of-town megastores like they were going out of fashion. Not so anymore, they are actually opting for smaller, convenience store-type units on the High Street. And their once-total market dominance is slipping year-on-year which shows that people are exercising their right to choose much more liberally - and that can only be a good thing. Of course, Local Life will always champion local businesses (the clue is in the title!). For our part, we’re constantly looking to improve and offer our readers and advertisers more – and over the last few months we’ve been working on some exciting ideas. I won’t give too much away now, but all I’ll say is that to find out more, keep your eyes peeled!

What An Exhibition! A new exhibition on ROF Chorley is now open at Astley Hall - and remains open until Easter. It has been co-ordinated by Euxton-based local historian Stuart Clewlow in his capacity as chairman of Chorley & District Cultural Forum. The exhibition is open to the public from approximately noon–4pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in the refurbished farmhouse. The building is staffed by volunteers and entry is free. However, donations are more than welcome and all contributions are being donated to St.Catherine’s Hospice. Stuart said: “It has been a pleasure to work on this project with the member groups of the forum. This has been our first commissioned project and I think we have done ourselves proud and the exhibition will be of great interest not just to the people of Chorley but also to visitors of Astley far and wide. “The production of the exhibition was sponsored by a number of local businesses and supported by all the member groups of the forum, who saw it as an appropriate showcase display for the Farmhouse, in this the 75th anniversary year of when the ROF Chorley site was officially opened by King George VI.

“It is great to see just what can be achieved when likeminded groups work together with a common goal in mind. It is a real credit to everyone involved and I hope that the skills and abilities of the members of the Chorley & District Cultural Forum will be called upon again.” For further information about the ROF Chorley exhibition, Stuart can be contacted on saclewlow@ yahoo.com or via Facebook by searching for Chorley & District Cultural Forum.

Plans Shelved Plans to change the opening hours at Euxton and Clayton Green libraries have been shelved. Lancashire County Council consulted locals in the summer over proposals which would have seen lunchtime closures at Euxton being scrapped, and a noon opening on Fridays. The trade-off would have been earlier closing on Mondays and Fridays. For Clayton Green, it was proposed that opening hours were standardised on weekdays until 6pm except Thursdays, where the 1pm closing time would remain.

St Pius X Catholic Preparatory School & Oak House Nursery

The current opening hours for both will now remain in place.

Licence Bid The public is being given the opportunity to comment on a licensing application for Euxton Park Golf Centre, Euxton Lane. An application has been received by Chorley Council for a premises licence with alcohol. The time period applied for is 8.30am-6pm on Sundays, and 8am-9.30pm from Monday to Saturday. The retail of alcohol would be between 11.30am-9.30pm from Monday-Saturday and 11.30am-6pm on Sundays. The consultation deadline is Monday, January 12. To have your say, visit www.chorley.gov.uk - the application reference is 14/01477/LAPLA.

Runshaw Bake Off The Great Runshaw Bake Off competition was held at Runshaw Adult College’s Euxton Lane campus recently. Staff judged the annual Bake Off with catering tutor Devin Smith and competition organiser Pam Pye, casting their expert eye over the entries. This year’s theme was a Vintage Tea Party. Entrants were required to all follow the same basic sponge recipe but could add any other ingredients or decoration they liked. The winning entry was from Foundation Diploma Art & Design student Lucy Dillon for her delicious butterfly cakes, second prize was awarded to Kayleigh Pagett for her traditional Victoria sponge and third prize was given to Emily Allen for her beautifully decorated daisy fairy cakes. After the judging had finished all the cakes were sold to students and staff in aid of the chosen college charity Mary’s Meals.

Business Review

Making the Grade Getting private tuition now can help give your child the edge at exam time. David Sudworth reports… In an increasingly competitive world where jobs are harder to come by, children are now under more pressure than ever to perform in exams. Worryingly though, it appears exams are starting to get tougher. Last year, there was a reported drop in top GCSE grades. According to the Joint Council for Qualifications, there was also a rise in pupils having to undertake re-sits. It was much the same story for A-level students, with the amount of A* of A grades falling year on year. As a result, more parents are now considering ‘topping up’ their children’s education with private tuition to give them that competitive edge. At one time, private tuition was seen out of the financial reach of most people, but now there’s high quality help at hand at the right price for you.

24

Local Tutor Doctor owners Dominic and Hilary Stone specialise in delivering one-to-one assistance to bring out the best in children across the area. And they have the experience to back it up. Dominic has worked at one of the highest-achieving primary schools in the country while Hilary has been responsible for over 300 pupils’ academic, social and all round development in a secondary school. Dominic said: “For many students, the most effective form of private tuition is a face-to-face lesson in the comfort of their own home. The steps we take help to ensure that this opportunity to learn is optimised to the benefit of the student. We cover all ages, subjects and abilities, including primary, SATs, 11+, common entrance, languages, gifted and able and learning difficulties, GCSE, AS/A2 level and degree subjects. We’ve had success with everyone from Oxbridge students to those with acute special needs.”

Hilary added: “We are proud of our work as it fills in missing bricks of academic structure, consolidates current requirements, and then moves the student ahead of expectations. Most importantly, our tutors are matched by expertise, personality and aptitude to the student they tutor. We ensure the match is perfect from the outset by meeting the family Business Owners Dominic & Hilary Stone and assessing their expectations from our tutors.” Dominic and Hilary stress that with exams looming, the time to act is now: “Time is of the essence for those who have children sitting exams this summer. We have tutors ready and waiting to help your child get the best results possible, so call us today on 0800 612 5028.” Here’s what our satisfied clients (and their parents) have to say…. Just delighted. Everything went well from start to finish! Mrs W, Standish. Totally tailored to the individual’s needs. Would definitely recommend to everyone. Completely satisfied. Mrs B, Blackburn

Thanks for the A level support so far. The chemistry tutor has been a revelation. Mrs K, Wigan Dominic, just to let you know the first ICT tuition lesson was brilliant and she is looking forward to the next. Mrs M, Atherton

Nursery To Expand? A Brinscall nursery has unveiled expansion plans. Nature Trail Nursery, on School Lane, has submitted proposals to Chorley Council to change of use of existing flat above the nursery, at Flat Solutions House, to cater for children’s parties, pamper parties and haircuts.

“At the weekend the main Nursery is closed and therefore the car park empty, thus providing car parking spaces. From our market research we can see no disruption to the amount of traffic we have going on to our car park. “We have also an agreement with the public house next door for staff to park on his land, if we have the need to. This can be confirmed in writing.

In papers submitted to the authority, it states: “Nature Trail Nursery has been running for over three years. It provides quality childcare for the local area and employees 18 staff.

“The change of use would only highlight the facilities we already offer over the weekend and provide parents with ‘out of school’ activities as well as providing jobs in the area.”

“We have a flat attached to the nursery, we would like to change the use of the flat to cater for children’s birthday parties, pamper parties and craft facilities. This would mainly be offered over the weekend.

A final decision is due to be made on the application by February 6. For further details, visit www.chorley.gov.uk - the planning reference number is 14/01251/FUL.

Rebel with a cause David Sudworth looks back at the life of a Clayton-le-Woods artist whose works are lionised in her adopted homeland

Back in her birthplace of Clayton-le-Woods, it merited a few comments in the local press, but the overall response seemed muted. One local commented how they couldn’t understand why she wasn’t appreciated more in Britain or, indeed, in Lancashire. In Mexico however, her adopted homeland, her death at the age of 94 prompted national coverage from the likes of CNN Mexico and the international Spanish language newspaper, El País. Born on April 6, 1917, Leonora was the only daughter of Harold, a textiles magnate who owned two mills in Eccleston. His wealth meant that instead of being educated locally, ‘Prim’ - as was her family nickname - was sent to a convent school in Essex. However, her rebelliousness saw her expelled not once, but twice. The nuns who tried to tutor her reported back that their daughter “would co-operate neither in work nor play”. Seemingly in despair, the family sent her to Florence, Italy, where she studied at the Academy of Art. It was there that a creative light suddenly flicked on in her mind.

She rubbed shoulders with some of the greatest artists of our time, counted Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali as friends and her works fetched over $1m. But news of Leonora Carrington’s passing four years ago this month was, in Britain at least, mostly confined to ‘industry’ circles.

30

It was prompted by a visit to an exhibition of surrealist painters, which included the movement’s founder, Paul Éluard. Her fascination deepened when she bought a copy of English writer Aldous Huxley’s best-selling novel, Eyeless In Gaza. Neither her father nor her Irish mother, Maureen Moorhead, were particularly encouraged by their daughter’s fascination but agreed to let her come back and study at the Chelsea School of Art. Its other notable alumni include actors Dirk Bogarde and Ralph Fiennes, and comedian Alexei Sayle.

Not long after turning 20, she announced to her father that she’d fallen in love with the 46-year-old married, surrealist German painter, Max Ernst, and was moving with him to Paris.

It was in Mexico where Leonora put down roots, and immersed herself in the country’s diverse artistic scene. The first time she became internationally recognised was in 1947, when her works appeared at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York City. It’s said this made her a star almost overnight in Mexico. After she and Leduc had amicably divorced, she married Hungarian Chiki Weisz, and they had two sons, Gabriel and Pablo. The pair remained married until Chiki’s death in 2007.

It’s said Harold replied to his daughter by saying two things; first that she should never speak to him Max Ernst again and, second, that in his opinion she would die without a penny to her name. That was indeed the last time they would speak, although she did keep in touch with her mother.

In the early 1960s, she was asked to create a mural which she named El Mundo Magico de los Mayas, and which was influenced by folk stories from the region. The mural is now located in the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City.

From Paris, the new couple moved to southern France but within a short space of time, World War II had broken out and, as a German, Ernst was imprisoned by the French. The relationship now having hit the buffers, Leonora headed not back to the bosom of her family, but further away to Spain where she had a nervous breakdown and spent time in a psychiatric hospital. According to a distant relative, the Carringtons were so worried about their daughter’s treks across Nazi Europe that they sent a nanny by submarine to fetch her from Spain. However, Leonora wasn’t about to come quietly, so she married Mexican diplomat Renato Leduc and sought refuge in America, before finally heading to Mexico City.

Some of her best known works are Green Tea, 1942; Temptation of St. Anthony, 1946; And Then We Saw the Daughter of the Minotaur, 1953; The Magus Zoroaster Meeting His Own Image in the Garden (Brothers in Babylon), 1960 and Sunday March, 1990. As well as paintings, Leonora’s literary work won her many plaudits. She also wrote the plays including The Debutante (1937), A Flannel Night-Shirt (1951), Penelope (1957) and The Invention of the Mass (1969). As with many artists, she had a political streak which veered towards the Left. Indeed, her convictions were so deeply held that during the student protests of 1968, which culminated in a massacre of up to 300 people by military police, she left Mexico temporarily in protest.

“She detested what she called the overintellectualisation of her work. She believed that its interpretation was in the eye, and the mind, of the beholder and, to that end, she resisted all attempts to get her to explain, or dissect, what she had painted or sculpted. Like her, the work was funny, witty, wry and wise. Like her, it was questioning, probing, disquieting and complex.”

Leonora: In Her Own Words… Leonora with her second husband, Chiki Weisz She returned a year later and was responsible for cofounding the country’s Women’s Liberation Movement. She spoke about women’s “legendary powers” and the need for women to take back “the rights that belonged to them”.

“I didn’t have time to be anyone’s muse...I was too busy rebelling against my family and learning to be an artist.” “In my opinion it is not good to completely admire anyone, including God” “Sentimentality is a form of fatigue” “Painting is a need, not a choice”

In 2005, she finally gained some recognition in her homeland by being awarded on OBE by the Queen. Throughout her life, Leonora dismissed any overcomplex analysis of her works, saying: “The idea of painting or writing something comes just like that, like cooking or sewing something - and it is a which moment comes naturally.” Even as late as 2006, Leonora’s ‘escape’ meant that, as far as her family were concerned, she remained something of a black sheep. Her cousin, Joanna Moorhead, met her for the first time that year, travelling to Mexico City to meet her face-to-face. Writing in a national newspaper after Leonora’s death, she said: “When I arrived on her doorstep, she could not have been more welcoming. In the time I spent with her in her extraordinarily dark and chilly house - a little bit of Lancashire, teapot and all, in the centre of Mexico City. She would often talk about how, through nine decades of trying to work out what life was about, all she had succeeded in discovering was that we were merely naked apes who knew little about life and even less about death. She was the most honest, and the bravest, person I ever met.

Test Drive - by Tim Barnes-Clay

Volvo S60 Volvo has never had the same appeal as its German executive cousins. It has never looked as aggressive as Audi, nor as brutal as BMW or as mean as Mercedes-Benz. But that is a good thing. You see, the Swedish marque does things its own way and that’s at the very heart of why motorists opt for Volvo – even though they could, for the same money, afford something a little sexier. Take the S60; it’s very much a thinking man’s car. And that’s not to say that German motors don’t attract intelligent people. It offers some of the most restful, supportive and sumptuous seats on the automotive market. Chairs you can imagine a college professor sinking into before lighting his pipe and mulling over the day’s events. It’s the kind of car he’ll then cruise back home in while listening to Classic FM. Do you see where I’m going here?

34

The S60 is by no means boring though; it can still satisfy your pleasure sensors. Let’s face it, Scandinavian design is generally pleasing. This is evident in the redesigned interior and exterior of the latest S60. Step inside, and materials, such as wood and leather and the easy-to-use controls, contribute to an ‘incommand’ driving experience. The overall effect is warm and cosy, like being in a Swedish house on a cold night. The car’s colour themes correspond beautifully with the backlit white controls in the dash and elsewhere in the vehicle. On the outside, the S60’s road presence has been increased by a new front design. The more focused and determined-looking headlamps help create an expressive face. The car’s horizontal lines at both the front and rear have been emphasised. Together with details such as a wider grille, daylight running lights and LED tail lamps, they give the S60 a handsome, roadhugging presence. The Volvo saloon has a beauty that appears rooted in the natural world. The clean surfaces and contours give it a very classy feel.

important area of motoring: fuel efficiency. The fuel consumption of the S60 D2 diesel, on test here with a manual gearbox, has been improved to a class-leading 72.4 mpg, translating into CO2 emissions of only 103 g/km. With environmental credentials like these, any self-respecting, Volvo driving, college professor will have to put his pipe out now.

Enhancements for the S60 include ‘Sensus’. This is the name Volvo uses for all its HMI (Human Machine Interface) functionality and the all-new Sensus Connected Touch accessory is the latest addition. It enables connectivity and Internet in the car and turns the seven-inch display into a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen that can be used even when wearing gloves - a world first in cars and handy in winter. Connection is made either via a car-mounted 3G/4G dongle or your mobile phone. It allows you access to full Internet browsing (except when driving), Internet streaming of music, on-line Google Map and Search, weather information, an App Store for new functions and updates as well as a Volvo service locator. It is also possible to share a WiFi network with everyone in the car.

Jack’s Tracks

Mawdesley Moss

The terrain between the villages of Croston, Mawdesley and Rufford is as flat as a pancake, but this seven-mile walk has plenty to hold your interest, such as the very best imagery of Croston, the Leeds & Liverpool canal, Rufford Old Hall and those majestic wind turbines on Mawdesley Moss, once the cause of so much grief for the residents of the three villages. Once you leave the confines of Croston though, it’s a walk where you can disappear with your thoughts without getting lost because it’s quite an easy walk to follow, and, with Tastebuds at Fettlers Wharf and The Grapes en route, it’s also a walk where you can enjoy a refreshing pint and a good meal too!

36

turn right at this point and head towards the level crossing by Finney House Farm. Take great care when you cross the level crossing on the Ormskirk-Preston railway line and make sure you have your dogs on the lead. Carry on down the straights of Finney Lane in perfect solitude for a further ½ mile, until you arrive at a three way junction, take the right junction and go over the concrete bridge with the metal railings. You then follow the right bend near the environment agency site and you will come to the main A581 Southport to Chorley road.

Park up close to the middle of Croston, and find your way to the Grapes pub. Cross the main road into The Hillocks and head over the cobbled bridge over the River Yarrow. Once over the bridge bear right down a single track lane, which eventually turns into a footpath leading to a road (Turflands). When you arrive at Turflands, turn right and follow the road for 250 yards to its T-junction with Drinkhouse Road. Turn left and follow Drinkhouse Road (which becomes Drinkhouse Lane) for 1/3 mile to the outskirts of the village.

Turn left and go over Great Hanging Bridge. You’ll follow the main road for a rather tedious 0.8 miles and cross from Chorley to West Lancs in the process too. Just as you spot the sign for the A59 you’ll come across Spark Bridge, which carries the road across the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Take right turn downhill immediately before you cross Spark Bridge. Once you get down to the canal, turn left and go under the bridge.

Once you’ve gone round the left hand bend at the bottom of Drinkhouse Lane, follow the path for 250 yards until you come to a sign saying ‘No Through Road’;

You’ll pass the colourful houseboats and a swing bridge before you spot the black and white timbers of Rufford Old Hall on the other side of the canal. Depart the canal at the next bridge and turn left onto the B5246 (Station Road). If you’re peckish or could do with a nice coffee,

pass a concrete bridge with metal railings and a water treatment works and you’ll eventually come to a single gravel track road (Gales Lane). Turn left and head towards the wind turbines. The gravel track forks, take the right fork, again heading towards the wind turbines. Go past the wind turbines and once you get to the edge of that field where the wooden posts and the grey metal box are, carry straight on towards some fairly modern houses in the distance. After 700 yards, you’ll see that the track bends to the right, so go round the bend and take the immediate left turn, following the line of telegraph poles towards housing. You’ll come across a T Junction; turn right and then an immediate left on Carr Lane and follow this single track road for 0.6 miles towards Croston. Once you pass Manor House Barn (look out for the well in the garden), turn right and then take the next left just before a house called Yarrow Cottage. Go over the Yarrow once more and you’re now at the Old School House. Go under the archway into the churchyard and pass to the left hand side of the church into the picturesque Church Street. The Grapes awaits you at the bottom of Church Street and you’re back where you started. Fettlers Wharf is just 50 yards on the right hand side, where you can treat yourself to a well-deserved break. Once you’ve sated your appetite, cross the level crossing at Rufford Train Station and then immediately cross the nearby bridge over the River Douglas. It’s really tricky at this point as there’s no pavement, so take that right hand bend carefully and follow the road for a further 200 yards to the first line of trees, where there a public footpath symbol on the left hand side. Follow that path around the perimeter of the field and once you get to the corner of that field, cross over the metal roller and follow the footpath around the right hand perimeter of the next field. Follow that path for the length of that field, cross over the brook on a concrete bridge and carry on in the same direction, going under the wires near the electricity pylon. Once you get to the end of that field, bear right and follow the farm track up to an embankment. You’ll spot another public footpath sign, so take a sharp left turn up the embankment and follow the path on top of the embankment, parallel to New Reed Brook. Carry on walking on the embankment for ½ mile; you’ll

Garden Diary - by Angie Barker

Room with a view... Happy New Year everyone! I hope that Father Christmas brought you everything you wished for – and more. We had a lovely time and Hubby excelled himself this year in the present buying category – not a single gift receipt was required. It has only taken him 27 years but he has finally remembered my bra size! Back to gardening. January is a strange time of year to write a garden diary but my best advice for this time of year is to curl up in front of the fire with a glass of left over mulled wine and have a browse through a good gardening book or magazine. You are bound to get some inspiration for the forthcoming year and it will help to take your mind off the impending credit card bill and post-holiday blues. The views of your garden from the house are at their most important at this time of year because we will be

spending more time looking at the garden from inside, than being out in it. The most important views are likely to be from the kitchen window above the sink and patio doors in living rooms and dining rooms and of course any conservatory windows. They may not be limited to these though. I designed a garden earlier this year for a lady whose elderly father lived with her and an important part of the brief was to include a nice view of the garden from his bedroom window. Placing a focal point within your view - something as simple as a bird bath for example – immediately draws the eye and gives that space a sense of purpose. And if your view is of a flat and empty border, plant some evergreens, there are lots which give colour at this time of year as well. An important rule of garden design is that you don’t see the garden all at once so don’t worry if you can only see part of your garden from your view, this will encourage further exploration when you get out into the garden. So let’s look forward to the future and to another year of happy gardening!

Recipe of the month

Tomato Revitalising Smoothie Revitalise yourself with a delicious, fresh tasting, peppery tomato smoothie. This quick and easy smoothie packs a punch both in flavour and also nutritionally. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, the nutrient that gives tomatoes their red colour, the benefits of which are well documented for protecting cardiovascular health and also for being anti-carcinogenic. Tomato based lycopene, combined with a small amount of fat in the yogurt increases these health benefits according to much research conducted in the last decade. Enjoy!

Ingredients

Equipment

• 1 tbsp fresh basil leaves

Blender or food processor

• 12 cherry tomatoes

Method

• 2 tbsp natural yogurt or crème fraiche • A few turns of freshly ground pepper • 1 tsp lime juice

Place all ingredients in the blender or processor and whizz until completely combined and smooth.

• 2 tbsp water or apple juice.

Pour into a beautiful glass and garnish with basil leaves.
