Something about
I
May
’ve come to the realisation I’m at my happiest around water. I don’t know whether it’s the ripple in a reservoir, the clapping of waves, or the fresh breeze that gives me a new lease of life, but I know when I’m by water this is where I’m the most calm. My happiest memory is when I was on holiday in Spain, on a pedalo on a lake surrounded by rolling mountains, and that was a moment in time where I felt anything was possible. And whenever I need a little boost at home, I get outside and enjoy the vast green spaces our local area has to offer. And I think May is a great month to get out and enjoy ourselves. There are lots of activities for the whole family to enjoy this month, including Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council Community Day which falls on Monday, May 7th, to keep everyone in the Bank Holiday Mood. Or perhaps you’d like to let your inner child shine with a trip to the Turnpike to see Roald Dahl’s classic ‘The Twits’ brought to life courtesy of the Turnpike Community Theatre. And remember, as The Twits say: “A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” My head is very much getting geared up for the encroaching summer months, and I’m sure many of you are hoping for a warm and sunny British summer too. A girl can dream. See you next time!

The land at Bridge Street could soon house a brand new Lidl store with associated car parking and landscaping following the demolition of an existing building. If planning permission is granted, pedestrian and vehicle access will be in place for the store. As well as 96 car parking spaces; four cycle spaces; and eight disabled spaces will be created for the site. Proposed opening times for the store will be: Monday-Saturday, 7am-11pm, and Sunday and Bank Holidays from 10am-4pm. As the site is in a Flood Zone, special measures will need to be taken beforehand.

A frightful
tale
Lowton author C J Harter takes the local area into horror fiction with her latest novel. C J lives in Lowton and has been writing for about 15 years, but surprisingly enough her inspiration for her latest novel ‘Fitful Head’ came to her on her daily dog walks at Pennington Flash. She said: “I walk at the Flash daily, and I can tell you it can be an eerie place when you’re all alone and the sun hasn’t yet risen. When the mist descends... anything seems possible. It’s the perfect setting for a ghost story. “I used to live on Bodden Street, and that house always struck me as the kind of place a ghost might choose to haunt: old, creaky stairs, dark corners,
open fields out back. So I located my haunted house there.” But what’s to be expected in the book? Isobel Hickey is haunted by ghostly footprints in the snow, and a sinister stranger who knows too much about her. Isobel is plunged into danger when a mute old woman speaks from her death-bed, signalling a nightmare chain of frightening events where her deceased husband Richard’s secrets lurk and threaten her sanity. C J Harter’s book ‘Fitful Head: A Ghost Story’ is available to spook you now.

Look up! And get
more space
at home for just
£297
+ VAT
We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of that space over our heads ?
says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Paul. “This is a low-cost and simple solution that’s affordable to most, and certainly more cost effective than locking your possessions away in a remote warehouse. For just £297+VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draftproof loft hatch if required from only £55.”
And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Skilled local, Paul Langley,

Mining
art
Niamh Ollerton meets with the artist bringing Leigh’s mining heritage to life. ome of you may remember the days when mining was at the forefront of our society. Miners, engineers, and pit brow lasses would head to the colliery for a hard day’s work, a gruelling task many of us can’t begin to fathom. But without a working mine left in Lancashire, our heritage is slowly being forgotten, and could soon be lost forever. That’s where Manchester based artist and curator Mary Griffiths comes in. Her latest exhibition ‘Wild Honey’ at The Turnpike, explores the history of Leigh’s coal mines, bringing the town’s industrial past to life once more. Turnpike Director, Helen Stalker spoke with me about the importance of art in Leigh: “We wanted to develop a range of exhibitions to tell the story of this place and we asked contemporary artists to tell the stories. “There are political elements as well, with a present contemporary way of looking at it. We wanted it to be
securely rooted in this place with a fresh view through contemporary art. “Mary has really scrutinised the place through drawing sketches, learning about the history and then presenting it as a body of work. “The link is real. The colliery closed in 1970. As the industry was starting to close down there was this bold movement to open this art gallery in Leigh (which opened in 1971). “Almost like art was alive, when other things were in turmoil, as industry was making its way out. “That’s what we believe, that art should have an important place in the heart of the community as well.” Mary Griffiths’ ‘Wild Honey’ takes inspiration from the former local colliery at Astley Green, and the exhibition looks at traditional coal mining as a ‘raw’, ‘elemental’ process. But how did she get started?
Photos by Livia Lazar
S
17 Mary said: “Helen invited me and introduced me to the people at Astley. The whole drawing here is about the Lancashire coal mining community. “I had a good grasp on the mining industry as I am from the North West, and I have a very good memory of the mines closing down. It was a part of the politics I was involved in. It’s been very important to me. “I was going sometimes once or twice a week and slowly getting to know the site. I got to know the people there and had some contact with the men who worked there so I learned a lot. “I have to mention Steven Eckersley, Gemma Atkinson, Trevor Barton who run the site, moving it forward. And Bob Bruce from the Red Rose Steam Society also allowed me to look at the archive. “I was becoming aware of these volunteers who come quietly and get on with their work. Like Marilyn Lancaster who’s been on-board with the project from the beginning. And Michael Shardlow helped us get things moving at the site where there are also two more pieces.
“It’s a very peaceful place.” “Cliff Graham was the colliery mechanic and shaftsman, and he leads the team of engineers. He described the maintenance of the mines and different tasks at the pits. “I often watched him and the team go to the whistle engine and heard the whistle when I was there. People have been very welcoming and they’ve been very generous with me.” But with the inevitable change of seasons as Mary underwent her research of the site, she noticed some changes. Mary said: “As winter set in, the place had been taken over by the natural world.
“The nature at the site has been the subject of my drawings, like the pigeons. There are lots of circular motions and activity in the art.” Featured in the exhibition, Upcast (2017) is a lyrical work that replicates the intricacies of the transportation and pulley systems used in traditional mining. Mary’s drawings have proven to be labour-intensive, as her abstract, geometric designs are made up of delicate lines carefully carved into a surface layer of graphite over white gesso. She presents gentle, intricate pieces created through a physically demanding and rigorous process. Her practice almost symbolises the labour of underground workers, pushing themselves physically to provide for their loved ones. Mary said: “There’s a team of us which is nothing like the labour of a pit, but it’s very labour intensive.
“There were several live beehives at the site, there were some in old logs, and some in industrial machinery. That’s why the exhibition is called ‘Wild Honey.’ “It’s a very peaceful place where as it was full of activity once.
Colliery Pigeon - Mary Griffiths
18 “The men at Astley Green talked about their camaraderie, and me and my team felt it. “I wouldn’t want to compare our work as it’s a short term thing, but it’s a way to share our tales with those men and women.
“But we also have other things kindly lent to us, like a piece of rope from the mining museum itself. “A steel train door, painted in industrial red from Astley Green. I wanted to make the door pop against all the graphite, and I chose ‘Palatine Paints’ which are from Atherton and its local. I had no idea so it’s quite fitting. “We’ve also been lent a large group of fossils from the Museum of Wigan Life, all those that have been dug up from the area which were found by the Upcast (2017) by Mary Griffiths. Credit - Michael Pollard
“We deliberately took a picture as Pit Brow Lasses. Women were there in the 50s and 60s but were banned from going underground in the 1800s. “Those women, who worked in the mine, are forgotten so much, but they were there day in day out too.”
miners or pit brow lasses. “They show the ancient drawings of nature, from ferns and other plants. There will also be a drawing of the coal field, pigeons and life in the area. “The exhibition is about how beautiful the engineering of the NW is, especially Leigh.” Astley Green will also house two of Mary’s works – or interventions – which create something new out of objects at the site.
“It’s been very important to me.”
‘The Bower’ will look like a seeds pod, and in the summer months will look like the Bower in a summer home filled with flowers, and ‘The Shaft’ which features a 20 diameter circle to represent the underground shafts and has been planted out with wild flowers.
“Everything in the show was made especially for it and its all come from my experience and enrichment as an artist at Astley Green.
Mary’s exhibition at the Turnpike runs until Saturday, May 26, and is open 10am-4pm Tuesday to Friday, and 10am-2pm on Saturdays.
“I made a few works last year, but it’s taken more than 10 months. The big wall drawing will take a month, and we’re here from 9.30am-5.30pm working. It’s all done with a stick of graphite and a spoon. “I want the big drawing to make people go ‘wow’. It will be very shiny and people will be reflected in it, so people will almost feel a part of the story. “Anyone who has worked in the mines will recognise it, as the first part is all about underground Lancashire. “The second part focusses on the different lines over ground like the Mersey line, Bridgewater Canal, all those service lines.

Burscough
Bridge A
ccording to www.lancashire.gov.uk, 71% of the North West’s fruit and vegetables are grown in the West Lancashire area and it is those flat fertile fields that we visit today on our latest Jack’s Tracks, which clocked in at just over 6 miles long. Most unusually for a village, Burscough has not one, but two railway stations, and it is from the Burscough Bridge station that the walk starts. Go north of the station on the A59 and turn left into Red Cat Lane. Within 75 yards turn left into the road
by Chris Pearce leading to the old station house. There, on the right, lies the pathway that eventually leads to Martin Mere; this is the path you need. The path soon opens up and runs alongside the railway line for a further 600 yards until you arrive at Crabtree Lane. Turn right and within a minute or so you’ll see a yellow girder set in the ground next to a track. Turn left down the track which soon opens up into a field; stay on the right hand boundary of the field.
29 Once you reach the fence which encloses Monk’s Farm, bear left and then follow the fence round a right hand bend until you reach a fingerpost. Take a 90 degree left turn towards Martin Mere and walk the 750 yards across the big open fields to Marsh Moss Lane. Cross the single track lane and go through the fence directly opposite. Follow the path to another fingerpost, in front of the metal fence enclosing the Martin Mere estate and turn left though the gate with a ‘Caution Deep Water’ sign on it. It’s very noticeable that the noise

30 of chirps, tweets and the honking of the seemingly kamikaze Canada Geese increases, as you make your way round the tall reeds beds surrounding the wetlands. Those with the foresight to have brought binoculars may want to linger in the bird hides, but with a thirsty dog in tow I push on round the reed
beds until I come to a track. Cross the track to the secondary pathway opposite and go through the gate; bear right and cross the stream and then take an immediate right down a slight gradient. Follow that path past the ponds and then once
Carry on Martin Lane in the same direction, through the junction with Merscar Lane. Just before the crossing over the canal, follow the path on the right which leads to the towpath, then turn left under the canal bridge towards Burscough. Follow the canal for almost two miles past two swing bridges (31New Lane and 32-Crabtree Lane) until you exit the canal at bridge 32a – Burscough Bridge.
you’ve rounded a right hand bend you’ll arrive at another fingerpost. Take a 90 degree left turn towards a derelict barn, and take another left turn towards the railway. Cross the rails with great care and as soon as you’re across, turn left on a path that runs parallel to the railway line.
You are right by Burscough Wharf and the village centre. Turn left and go through the centre for 325 yards until you get to the finish point of Burscough Bridge rail station.
Take a 90 degree right hand turn at the fingerpost towards ‘The Farm Tea Shop’, and then when you’ve swerved round a fir copse and walked round a field you’ll come to Martin Lane. Turn left and within 75 yards you’ll come to the aforementioned tea shop.

Small really can be
beautiful
Award Winner
by Angie Barker
S
o many of us have small gardens these days but any outside space is a wonderful addition to a home which is why we should make the most of every inch of space and make our gardens attractive, as well as practical, outdoor rooms. Small gardens need extra consideration however and here are a few pointers when thinking about the design of a small space: Decide what style you are going for and stick to that theme. So a contemporary garden, choose plants which will complete the look – Phormiums and Bamboos for example and go with straight lines. A courtyard garden should use Buxus sempervirens (Box) hedges and topiary. A more traditional style can use sweeping curves and circles. Don’t try to cram too much into a small space – less is more! Plants need to earn their keep so choose specimens which have long seasons of interest and a good balance of evergreens. Also limit your colour palette because too many colours in a small garden will make the borders appear cluttered
Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.
If your garden is shady make the bold decision to remove the lawn as it will always struggle. There is a fantastic range of paving products available now and small cobble setts really suit a small space You should incorporate a focal point - a large pot (unplanted) can do the trick perfectly. Similarly a bird bath, sun dial or sculpture Use the walls and fences to grow climbers which will green up the space and make it feel larger There are lots of clever storage solutions available these days like benches with hinged seats and screening ideas to hide away those dreaded wheelie bins. And one of the best things about a small garden is that you can get close up and personal with your plants and really look at their beautiful detail. One of the best for May must be Dicentra spectabilis (Lamprocapnos spectabilis is the new name) or Bleeding Heart. There is a white form called ‘Alba’ which is simply stunning. I’m always telling Hubby that the best things come in small packages – he is not very tall at 5 feet 8 inches – but what there is of him is perfectly designed !
