New Chapter...
In this issue
Early into a New Year, it is fashionable for folk to print their predictions for the next 12 months. But personally, I will resist the temptation; reason being it promises to be a busy, yet unpredictable, year in many respects. The world economy is still fragile and even here at home, the road to recovery has not been smooth. Then there’s the General Election in May which is far from a forgone conclusion for any of the main parties.

Closer to home, although nobody is saying we are out of the woods yet, our High Streets do seem to have regained some of the confidence which, only a few years ago, appeared to be ebbing away at a rate of knots. Being in my position, you get to visit many areas there is definitely a resurgence going on. In many years, it seems that people have now rediscovered the charms and benefits of buying locally. It’s easy to forget that only a few years ago, the big supermarkets were throwing up out-of-town megastores like they were going out of fashion. Not so anymore, they are actually opting for smaller, convenience store-type units on the High Street. And their once-total market dominance is slipping year-on-year which shows that people are exercising their right to choose much more liberally - and that can only be a good thing. Of course, Local Life will always champion local businesses (the clue is in the title!). For our part, we’re constantly looking to improve and offer our readers and advertisers more – and over the last few months we’ve been working on some exciting ideas. I won’t give too much away now, but all I’ll say is that to find out more, keep your eyes peeled!

War Story Call
Girls’ Rugby
St Helens’ libraries are asking 7-11 year olds and 12-16 year olds to transport themselves back to the start of World War I as part of a new creative writing competition.
Thatto Heath Crusaders - which says it is the only rugby league girls team in the area - is looking for new players.
You are asked to imagine its 1914, you live in St.Helens and it’s the start of World War I. How did you feel hearing about the war? How will the war affect you? How can you support the war effort? You may want to imagine that you are a young man about to volunteer to join up, or a nurse working in a hospital who would need to tend to the wounded. You may be going to do a new job while the war is going on like a coal miner working down the pit or a factory or farm worker. Your entry should be no more than 500 words or if it’s a poem, no more than 40 lines. First prize is a £35 book token and £75 worth of books for your school library. Second prize is a £25 book token and £60 worth of books for your school library while third prize is a £15 book token and £40 worth of books for your school library . The deadline for entries is Wednesday, February 11. To find out more, call 01744 677446 or visit www. sthelens.gov.uk/libraries
They train on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6pm7.30pm at Thatto Heath ARLFC’s new clubhouse in Close Street, off Elephant Lane. Call Colette on 07734 086833 or email col.eden@yahoo.co.uk for further details.

Child’s Play
Names Needed
Improvements are on the cards for Billinge. Wigan Council chiefs have identified £45,000 of enhancements at the play area and informal sport pitches at Cob Moor Park. The location is part of a number in the area which are on a priority list on where to spend developer contributions, known as Section 106 monies.
Crank and Kings Moss residents are being asked for important information on the village’s new war memorial.
Other areas include in the play area at Orrell Water Park, where £25,000 is earmarked. A report, from Wigan Council’s director of economy and skills, covering the financial year 2014/15 has now been presented to councillors but warns: “It is important to note that not all the priorities identified on the list can be completed with the current funds available. The list is used as a tool for Section 106 spend and identifies play areas in most need of investment.”
Crank Village Community Association is asking people to notify them of names which should go on the memorial. They have now published a list of the residents who are known to have died in the two World Wars. These are as follows: James Atherton, John Ball, Thomas Barclay, William Bolton, Jesse Carlisle, Philip Costello, Charles Edwards, Ernest Hart, Samuel Hart, Albert Holding, Henry Lomax, Andrew Madden, William Pye, Richard Richmond, William Rothwell, James Shuttleworth, William Stockley and John Woodcock (all World War I), and Francis Salt, William Smith (World War II). If you know of a name which is not mentioned, then please email mikebrimage@btinternet.com

Pharmacy Plans
Walk On
A Billinge pharmacy’s services are set to be temporarily relocated. The Co-operative Pharmacy has applied for planning permission for a portable building to be used for a period of nine months at Billinge Health Centre, Recreation Drive.
Whether it’s fighting the flab or just generally getting more active, St Helens Council’s health improvement team have just the thing you need. A number of local walks are planned, details of which are as follows:
In papers lodged with St Helens Council, it states the temporary building will be used during construction of an extension to the existing unit. For health and safety reasons, the premises needs to be vacated, but the pharmacy provides a community service so needs to continue trading in the interim. The papers also indicated that the current seven parking spaces will be reduced to four during this period. The council’s senior transport officer, Dave Whittleston, has not raised any objections to the proposal, saying in a written response: “The temporary building appears to be located within a private car park, and while parking spaces will be lost as a consequence, given the nature of the proposals, as well as the likely timescales involved, there are not deemed to be any significant highway implications.” A final decision is due soon.
Tuesday, January 13, 20 and 27: Freshstart Next Steps Walk - meet at 11.15pm at the Guide Hut, Church Road, Rainford. New Co-op Store? A new Co-op store could be opened up on a current Garswood pub car park. St Helens planners are currently considering the application for the Stag Hotel, on Station Road, which if passed would stand at the eastern boundary of the site. Agents on behalf of the applicants, New River Retail, say the site has been chosen as “a suitable and sustainable location” for the development of a neighbourhood foodstore facility. They add that the pub will remain unaltered and in use if the plans are given the green light. “The introduction of the store will generate additional employment opportunities in the area .The Co-op confirm that its community foodstores typically employ up to six full-time and 14 part-time staff. The store will create a range of posts including management roles
and sales assistants, opportunities which should be welcomed and encouraged, particularly in the current economic climate. In addition, the construction phase of the proposed convenience store will generate around 10 temporary construction jobs at the application site. “The scheme will make an efficient use of an existing underused site within an established residential and commercial area.” However, local residents have written to the council to object to the proposals. One said: “Already there is a huge amount of traffic using Station Road. Do we need any more before the stability of this road is brought into question?” Another added: “This kind of outlet is not in keeping with the character of Garswood, and may well harm existing businesses.” A decision is due to be made soon.

Target Met
Action Stations
St Helens Chamber and local businesses have achieved the goal of creating 365 jobs in one year... and even managed to do it ahead of schedule. Last January, the Chamber set itself the task to support 365 local young people into work. The challenge officially got underway on the first day of the New Year, and businesses pledged vacancies daily.
Voters in part of the Rainford and Blackbrook electoral wards will be going to a different polling station this May. St Helens Council has agreed to change the locations of two stations following a review carried out across the borough area.
Kath Boullen, St Helens Chamber chief executive said: “This has been our most ambitious target to date and it has been quite a year for all of us. But we are delighted to say that St Helens businesses have been right behind us and together we can look back on a fantastic achievement!” If you know a young person who could benefit from a start on the career ladder, the chamber’s next open day is on Tuesday, January 20. For more information, visit www.sthelenschamber.com
In Rainford, the current polling station for those living in Polling Districts RFB and RFD has been Rainford Brook Lodge School. However, following representations from the headteacher, the station is set to be moved back to its original location Rainford High following the completion of construction works. In Blackbrook Ward, the polling station covering the BLA, BLE and BLF districts, the former Richard Evans Primary School, is to be changed to Christ Church United Reform Church, West End Road, Haydock. The reason given is that the church has improved facilities and access.

Waterloo Memorial Plan A little-known memorial erected in Billinge to celebrate the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo is set to be restored to its former glory. The stone obelisk was placed on Wellington Field in the grounds of Bispham Hall Scout estate, Crank Road, in 1816, by brothers John and Robert Holt. It was granted Grade II listed status in 1966. A proposal has now been received by Wigan Council’s planning department to restore and repair it using traditional methods by skilled stonemasons. In papers lodged by Orrell-based Harris Consulting on behalf of the applicants, the Waterloo Monument Group, it states: “Unlike most, if not all Waterloo memorials, this was commissioned privately. The great age of this monument is apparent through the noticeable weathering (but its) position against a woodland backdrop has protected it from much of the ravages of nature.
“The value of this asset to the community can be understood through several aspects including industry, leisure and legend. However, through conversation it is apparent that many people didn’t know it exists here, but there is a palpable link. “The Holt Arms gets its name from the Holt Brothers who commissioned the monument - the pub was formerly The Foot of the Causeway after an ancient causeway. “The change of use of the estate in 1948 gave the monument more exposure, especially to those members of the scouting movement using the Wellington Field. “Its present condition necessitates suitable intervention to ensure its immediate safety and protection. Swift action should be taken to avoid further harm and to prevent the structure from eventual collapse.” Monument Group chairman John O’Neill, who was behind the successful restoration of the Boer War monument in Mesnes Park, told Local Life it was unlikely that works would be completed by this summer – the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. However, they are hopeful it will be ready by 2016, which marks 200 years since it was erected. The group is now in the process of applying for grant funding. A final decision on the application was due to be made by Wigan Council as Local Life went to press.

Decade of Generosity A group of generous friends from Billinge have called it a day after 10 years of fundraising. Harold and Joyce Greenall, Tom and Anne Ollerton, Jim and Marj Sinnott, and Peter Haddock have been holding annual events since 2004. It was prompted by the death of local man David Gore, who played in Billinge band H & The Avons. Harold takes up the story: “It all started many years ago, at least 20, when five of the members of Birchley St Mary’s Club, me, Jim, Peter, David Gore and Nigel Deacon, decided to get a group together and form a little band. The name was decided on due to the fact that four of the group lived in Avon Road and I was the odd one who lived in Royden Road. “However, David died of cancer about 10 years ago

so we decided to hold a concert in his name and raise money for cancer and heart research. We have done this every year since and each year we have averaged £2,000 which has brought a total of £20,964 over the years. “Just recently, we have lost another of the group, Nigel, again from cancer, so we are now down to three. The annual concert has been organised by Jim Sinnott and myself along with the club steward Tom Ollerton and greatly assisted by all our good wives. “Unfortunately we have decided that this most recent do will be our last. The recipients from this year’s fund which totalled £2,900, was Clatterbridge Hospital , Willowbrook Hospice , Broadgreen Heart Hospital and a payment was given to Mrs Joan Crank on behalf of the mental health charity MIND.” Harold, 76, who is the father of ex-Latics player Colin Greenall, added: “We would like to thank the generosity of all the members and businesses who gave plenty over the years. We would also like to stress that Birchley must be one of the most close knit communities around. Residents moved into Birchley approximately 50 years ago and the majority still reside there, along with the club steward who has been involved in the Club from the word go. “We would like to add that if any younger members felt they would like to take over and keep this Fund going, we will gladly help them.” For more information, call the club on 01744 892836.

Jack’s Tracks
Mawdesley Moss
The terrain between the villages of Croston, Mawdesley and Rufford is as flat as a pancake, but this seven-mile walk has plenty to hold your interest, such as the very best imagery of Croston, the Leeds & Liverpool canal, Rufford Old Hall and those majestic wind turbines on Mawdesley Moss, once the cause of so much grief for the residents of the three villages. Once you leave the confines of Croston though, it’s a walk where you can disappear with your thoughts without getting lost because it’s quite an easy walk to follow, and, with Tastebuds at Fettlers Wharf and The Grapes en route, it’s also a walk where you can enjoy a refreshing pint and a good meal too!
38
turn right at this point and head towards the level crossing by Finney House Farm. Take great care when you cross the level crossing on the Ormskirk-Preston railway line and make sure you have your dogs on the lead. Carry on down the straights of Finney Lane in perfect solitude for a further ½ mile, until you arrive at a three way junction, take the right junction and go over the concrete bridge with the metal railings. You then follow the right bend near the environment agency site and you will come to the main A581 Southport to Chorley road.
Park up close to the middle of Croston, and find your way to the Grapes pub. Cross the main road into The Hillocks and head over the cobbled bridge over the River Yarrow. Once over the bridge bear right down a single track lane, which eventually turns into a footpath leading to a road (Turflands). When you arrive at Turflands, turn right and follow the road for 250 yards to its T-junction with Drinkhouse Road. Turn left and follow Drinkhouse Road (which becomes Drinkhouse Lane) for 1/3 mile to the outskirts of the village.
Turn left and go over Great Hanging Bridge. You’ll follow the main road for a rather tedious 0.8 miles and cross from Chorley to West Lancs in the process too. Just as you spot the sign for the A59 you’ll come across Spark Bridge, which carries the road across the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Take right turn downhill immediately before you cross Spark Bridge. Once you get down to the canal, turn left and go under the bridge.
Once you’ve gone round the left hand bend at the bottom of Drinkhouse Lane, follow the path for 250 yards until you come to a sign saying ‘No Through Road’;
You’ll pass the colourful houseboats and a swing bridge before you spot the black and white timbers of Rufford Old Hall on the other side of the canal. Depart the canal at the next bridge and turn left onto the B5246 (Station Road). If you’re peckish or could do with a nice coffee,

pass a concrete bridge with metal railings and a water treatment works and you’ll eventually come to a single gravel track road (Gales Lane). Turn left and head towards the wind turbines. The gravel track forks, take the right fork, again heading towards the wind turbines. Go past the wind turbines and once you get to the edge of that field where the wooden posts and the grey metal box are, carry straight on towards some fairly modern houses in the distance. After 700 yards, you’ll see that the track bends to the right, so go round the bend and take the immediate left turn, following the line of telegraph poles towards housing. You’ll come across a T Junction; turn right and then an immediate left on Carr Lane and follow this single track road for 0.6 miles towards Croston. Once you pass Manor House Barn (look out for the well in the garden), turn right and then take the next left just before a house called Yarrow Cottage. Go over the Yarrow once more and you’re now at the Old School House. Go under the archway into the churchyard and pass to the left hand side of the church into the picturesque Church Street. The Grapes awaits you at the bottom of Church Street and you’re back where you started. Fettlers Wharf is just 50 yards on the right hand side, where you can treat yourself to a well-deserved break. Once you’ve sated your appetite, cross the level crossing at Rufford Train Station and then immediately cross the nearby bridge over the River Douglas. It’s really tricky at this point as there’s no pavement, so take that right hand bend carefully and follow the road for a further 200 yards to the first line of trees, where there a public footpath symbol on the left hand side. Follow that path around the perimeter of the field and once you get to the corner of that field, cross over the metal roller and follow the footpath around the right hand perimeter of the next field. Follow that path for the length of that field, cross over the brook on a concrete bridge and carry on in the same direction, going under the wires near the electricity pylon. Once you get to the end of that field, bear right and follow the farm track up to an embankment. You’ll spot another public footpath sign, so take a sharp left turn up the embankment and follow the path on top of the embankment, parallel to New Reed Brook. Carry on walking on the embankment for ½ mile; you’ll

Where Are They Now? - by David Sudworth
Highs & Lows... Duncan McKenzie tells David Sudworth about his two weeks with Cloughie, talking French with Cantona and why he decided to jump over a Mini… “Sit down young man. Right, I’ll mark your card for you. First, you’re the worst paid player at the club. And second; all those nutmegs, back heels and flips keep doing ‘em. Don’t change.”
I meet Duncan at his home, a mere stone’s throw away from Haydock Park Racecourse. Although retired from the game for 30 years now, the ex-Everton and Blackburn striker is still in the spotlight thanks to media appearances and a successful career on the after-dinner speaking circuit.
No-one ever accused Brian Clough of mincing his words. But if he had a soft spot for you, you’d be fine. It’s now 10 years since the self-styled Ol’ Big Head died, and a staggering 40 years on since the hard-drinking Teessider was sacked as Leeds United manager after a mere 44 days in the job. Duncan McKenzie, then aged 24, was a Clough signing, and although they only spent two weeks together, his influence on the young player resonates to this day. “He gave me that advice while sat in a pub, just a few hours after he’d been sacked. He didn’t have to say those things but that was the sort of person he was.”

In the 1970s, Duncan’s antics both on and off the field earned him headlines galore. For not only could he produce match-winning performances, he also had a talent for more unusual pursuits including jumping over a Mini and throwing a golf ball the entire length of Leeds’ home ground.

“The Mini thing was as a result of a bet. Years ago, some clubs didn’t have their own training grounds so we used a field which had a hedge around it and an old turnstile. Instead of queueing up and waiting to go through the turnstile, I’d jump over the hedge. “Then, someone said that the hedge was about as high as our trainer’s Mini, so they said they’d give me a fiver if I’d do it. That was about half a week’s wages at the time so I did it. The last time I did it was before a home match at Elland Road. Afterwards, the manager Jimmy Armfield subtly said to me: ‘Very good. Don’t do it again.’ Duncan’s antics provided some much-needed light relief to a club which had gone through a torrid time in the mid-1970s. It started in summer 1974 when manager Don Revie, who had achieved god-like status at Leeds, took the England manager’s job following the departure of 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey. Much to everyone’s amazement, his successor was outspoken Derby County manager Brian Clough. “It was well known that Clough and Revie hated each other’s guts,” says Duncan, over a cuppa in his conservatory. “There’s the famous line about him going to Leeds and telling all the players to get all their medals and trophies and chuck them in the bin because they hadn’t been won fairly. Cloughie thought Leeds were a dirty side. It’s also said that when he saw Don Revie’s old desk he ordered his former secretary to burn it.
I ever got tackled in a match, but afterwards the Forest manager Johnny Carey said he’d seen enough and wanted to sign me. “I signed on my 18th birthday and moved in to digs. It was a big thing at the time, especially as it was a good way from home and leaving a family which struggled for cash, but they bought me a Morris Minor for fifty quid so I’d go home occasionally. Even now, I have such a fondness for Nottingham because everything was a first; my first pint, first visit to a nightclub, etcetera” Duncan spent the first five years of his career at Forest, making over 100 appearances and scoring over 40 goals, before Clough swooped. “It was a completely different experience to me but the bottom line is that, throughout my career, I was a victim of being at clubs which were being skint. Notts Forest sold me because they needed the money. Cloughie paid £240,000, a club record at the time, and that was most of his budget gone, which he thought was ridiculous given all the honours Leeds had won.”
“I think at the time, he was a young manager trying to impose himself. He did contribute to his own downfall, but that’s what he was like. That’s why the Derby chairman Sam Longson got rid of him in the first place. Remember, he bought Colin Todd for something like £175,000 but only told the chairman afterwards.” Born on June 10, 1950, in Grimsby, Duncan got spotted at the age of 17 while he was playing for a pub team in Cleethorpes: “I was doing my A-levels at the time. I’d gone to Winteringham Grammar School,. I had a few ideas what I wanted to do for a career, but none of them involved playing football, so it was quite bizarre when I was sent to Nottingham Forest for trials. Dad didn’t want me to play professionally. I think that had something to do with the fact that he worked on Grimsby Docks, and all the ex-Grimsby Town players seemed to end up there as labourers. “While at school, I was into all sorts of sports; cricket, athletics, you name it. I only played for about 10 or 15 minutes in one Forest match because some big galoot came and tackled me. That was probably the last time

Duncan stayed at Leeds for two years
Clough’s well-publicised departure has gone down in footballing folklore, partly because of the messy and public fall-out. Surprisingly, Clough agreed to appear on Yorkshire TV’s Calendar programme just hours after being sacked, only to find himself sharing a platform with his arch-nemesis Revie. In the subsequent interview Duncan was namechecked by Clough himself when forced to defend his ‘big buying policy’ which, it was claimed, unsettled those who had played, and been successful, under Revie. “Cloughie just liked good football and so did I. There was an abject honesty about the way I played. I think in truth he was a bit of a loner, but was also a genius manmanager, which when you put them two together are a bit of a contradiction. I got on great with him, he gave me a bit of gip but that was all part and parcel of it.” After Clough’s exit, Duncan stayed for a further two years and soon established himself as club legend Allan Clarke’s striking partner. In 1976, he was sold to Belgian side Anderlecht but within a few months, he was back on English soil when he signed for Everton. “Because I speak French, I got on very well with everyone at Anderlecht but Everton soon came for me. It was rare in those days to get an English player who could speak a foreign language,. When Eric Cantona was at Leeds I spent ages talking to him in French and at the end the manager Howard Wilkinson said: ‘You’ve got more words out of him in 20 minutes than I have all season’ so I responded: ‘That’s because you could send a glass eye to sleep, Howard!’
trophy for their Player of the Season, even though I only played a handful of games.“ It was while at Everton that Duncan and his Liverpudlian-born wife of 44 years, Dot, put down roots in this area. They bought their home close to Haydock Park in 1977 and their children went to school locally. Andrew, now 40, went to RL Hughes and Byrchall High schools in Ashton while Riah, now 29, went to Nicol Mere in Ashton and then onto Bolton School. Despite moving to Chelsea in 1978, spending three years at Blackburn Rovers and then heading to America before hanging up his boots, Duncan remained both committed to the area and became a solid Everton fan. “Playing at Everton was brilliant, and even to this day I help out with hosting on match days. It’s just a great club and the fans were brilliant. It’s the Scouse humour, which I completely understand. “Our goalkeeper George Wood lived in Parbold and he’d come and pick me up and take us to Bellefield for training. They were a great set of lads and it was going great until Gordon Lee came in as manager. He had no
“I remember it was Jimmy Greenwood, the secretary In action for Everton at Old Trafford at Everton, who came over to Anderlecht to sign me, said it was the first time time for me at all, he thought I was a bit of a luxury so he’d ever seen an entire board go to an airport to wave I went to Blackburn. I had great times there as well but a player off. With my sense of humour, I think they did eventually the Rovers manager at the time, Howard that just to ensure that I’d actually gone, but it was a Kendall, was told to get rid of me because, again, they nice touch. After retiring, Duncan ran a fruit a veg shop on Eccleston Street, Prescot, for a short period of time before going into journalism. He wrote newspaper columns, took over from Danny Baker on Radio Five’s 6-0-6 football talk show and also did some commentating. He also briefly became a director of Wigan Athletic in the early 1990s but left after differences of opinion with the then chairman, Stephen Gage. These days, aside from the after-dinner and the Everton work, Duncan loves spending time with his threemonth-old grandson, Oscar, enjoying his gardening and watching the football. Looking back at his career, it’s apparent that Duncan still can’t quite believe he became a footballer: “If I was playing today, I’d be described as a show boater. I wasn’t so much a striker, more like a messer-abouter but that’s because I never expected to be a professional. That’s what gets me about today’s game, you’ve got six and seven year old who are being drilled by people who
may not even have been naturally gifted themselves in the first place. I never had any of that, we just played for fun. I remember my Everton team mate Mick Lyons being interviewed and he said they could never suss me out, because if we won, I’d be smiling and if we lost, I’d be smiling. I jokingly tell people that I make Dimitar Berbatov look mildly enthusiastic but I wouldn’t change anything. It’s in my nature to see amusement in anything. “There have been some absolutely great players who haven’t been as lucky as me. It beggars belief, a lad from Grimsby ended up playing with some of the best players on the planet and met some of the world’s biggest stars. I remember chatting to Princess Anne at Haydock Park and remember thinking I only live around the corner! “There was also the time when someone tapped me on the shoulder, I turned round and the person said: ‘Hi, I’m Johnny Mathis’. Completely bizarre, but then again football is a bizarre game...”
United They Fall
Joe Dempsie (left) plays Duncan in The Damned United In 2009, a film about Clough’s 44 days at Leeds was released. The Damned United saw Michael Sheen playing Clough, while Duncan was played by Liverpool-born actor Joe Dempsie, star of teen drama Skins. Unlike many former Leeds players, Duncan agreed to co-operate with the makers, and went to see the film at Warrington Odeon when it was released: “I quite enjoyed it actually. I did contact some of the former Leeds players and, although they didn’t want to talk to them film’s makers, they were supportive of me doing it. I’d say it’s about 50% accurate. I think Sheen played Clough very well and when I saw ‘me’ I just laughed. It was very strange, but fun”.

Test Drive - by Tim Barnes-Clay
Volvo S60 Volvo has never had the same appeal as its German executive cousins. It has never looked as aggressive as Audi, nor as brutal as BMW or as mean as Mercedes-Benz. But that is a good thing. You see, the Swedish marque does things its own way and that’s at the very heart of why motorists opt for Volvo – even though they could, for the same money, afford something a little sexier. Take the S60; it’s very much a thinking man’s car. And that’s not to say that German motors don’t attract intelligent people. It offers some of the most restful, supportive and sumptuous seats on the automotive market. Chairs

you can imagine a college professor sinking into before lighting his pipe and mulling over the day’s events. It’s the kind of car he’ll then cruise back home in while listening to Classic FM. Do you see where I’m going here? The S60 is by no means boring though; it can still satisfy your pleasure sensors. Let’s face it, Scandinavian design is generally pleasing. This is evident in the redesigned interior and exterior of the latest S60. Step inside, and materials, such as wood and leather and the easy-to-use controls, contribute to an ‘incommand’ driving experience. The overall effect is warm and cosy, like being in a Swedish house on a cold night. The car’s colour themes correspond beautifully with the backlit white controls in the dash and elsewhere in the vehicle.
On the outside, the S60’s road presence has been increased by a new front design. The more focused and determined-looking headlamps help create an expressive face. The car’s horizontal lines at both the front and rear have been emphasised. Together with details such as a wider grille, daylight running lights and LED tail lamps, they give the S60 a handsome, roadhugging presence. The Volvo saloon has a beauty that appears rooted in the natural world. The clean surfaces and contours give it a very classy feel.
and updates as well as a Volvo service locator. It is also possible to share a WiFi network with everyone in the car.
Enhancements for the S60 include ‘Sensus’. This is the name Volvo uses for all its HMI (Human Machine Interface) functionality and the all-new Sensus Connected Touch accessory is the latest addition. It enables connectivity and Internet in the car and turns the seven-inch display into a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen that can be used even when wearing gloves - a world first in cars and handy in winter.
With environmental credentials like these, any selfrespecting, Volvo driving, college professor will have to put his pipe out now.
Connection is made either via a car-mounted 3G/4G dongle or your mobile phone. It allows you access to full Internet browsing (except when driving), Internet streaming of music, on-line Google Map and Search, weather information, an App Store for new functions

Volvo is certainly pushing at the technological boundaries now – and that’s including one very important area of motoring: fuel efficiency. The fuel consumption of the S60 D2 diesel, on test here with a manual gearbox, has been improved to a class-leading 72.4 mpg, translating into CO2 emissions of only 103 g/ km.

Have Your Say A shake-up of policing across the area could see the closure of Newton-le-Willows Police Station. Locals are being urged to have their say on plans to close the station, which also include proposed closures at Rainhill, Sutton and Thatto Heath. However, those stations in Eccleston, Rainford, Billinge and Moss Bank look set to be retained. Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Kennedy said these proposals, called Taking The Right Steps, are part of a 10 year place to make police more visible, while at the same time reducing costs and protecting around 65 police officer jobs. Garden Diary - by Angie Barker
Room with a view... Happy New Year everyone! I hope that Father Christmas brought you everything you wished for – and more. We had a lovely time and Hubby excelled himself this year in the present buying category – not a single gift receipt was required. It has only taken him 27 years but he has finally remembered my bra size! Back to gardening. January is a strange time of year to write a garden diary but my best advice for this time of year is to curl up in front of the fire with a glass of left over mulled wine and have a browse through a good gardening book or magazine. You are bound to get some inspiration for the forthcoming year and it will help to take your mind off the impending credit card bill and post-holiday blues. The views of your garden from the house are at their most important at this time of year because we will be

spending more time looking at the garden from inside, than being out in it. The most important views are likely to be from the kitchen window above the sink and patio doors in living rooms and dining rooms and of course any conservatory windows. They may not be limited to these though. I designed a garden earlier this year for a lady whose elderly father lived with her and an important part of the brief was to include a nice view of the garden from his bedroom window. Placing a focal point within your view - something as simple as a bird bath for example – immediately draws the eye and gives that space a sense of purpose. And if your view is of a flat and empty border, plant some evergreens, there are lots which give colour at this time of year as well. An important rule of garden design is that you don’t see the garden all at once so don’t worry if you can only see part of your garden from your view, this will encourage further exploration when you get out into the garden. So let’s look forward to the future and to another year of happy gardening!
