Pause & rewind

N

estled in a faded, brittle plastic bag, they looked like relics from a bygone era.

“What’s those?” said the eight-year-old as I plonked them down on the coffee table. My other half and I chuckled simultaneously. A small plume of dust rose from the bundle as I peered inside: They’re cassette tapes, love. They have music on.” Unimpressed, she went back to her iPad. We proceeded to spend a good few minutes going through them. “Ooh, that’s a great song”.... “Wow, I remember them”.... “I saw these in concert once”... Only the fact our tea was about to catch fire stopped us from wallowing deeper into this musical myopia. The reason for all this is that I’ve recently acquired a car stereo which only plays cassette tapes. Cast aside over 15 years ago, no-one thought they’d ever see the light of day again. Yet the fact they were still there, waiting to be loved again, was this a sign? It happened with vinyl records. Ditched years ago by most households, they’re now the must-have accessory. Some stores are charging an outrageous £30 for reissues. Thankfully though, charity shops still knock some decent originals out for £1 each - if you’re prepared to wade through the oceans of easy listening and copies of The Wurzels’ Greatest Hits. So surely it’s only a matter time the humble cassette tape makes a comeback too. After all, everything is cyclical. In 1987, we had a woman Prime Minister, a TV actor as US President and Kyle Minogue was wowing audiences across the world. If only we could still buy petrol at 38p a litre, then that’d really be something worth singing about.

Shake up on the Paying extra for bin collections and a review of local library services are both on the cards for St Helens residents. Councillors have given the go-ahead to charging up to £35 a year for each green bin. They estimate this will rake in around £510,000 for the cash-strapped authority. And a consultation is now underway over the borough’s library services. Although bosses have steered clear of talking about specific buildings, some residents are worried that a string of underused facilities may be for the chop, or at least have their opening hours reduced.

cards Speaking after St Helens Council rubber stamped the bin charging idea, cabinet member Seve Gomez-Aspron said: “We have provided this free service for as long as we can. “We recently had to put Council Tax up, but even that doesn’t bring in enough money to cover Government cuts, and so services are lost. Like you, I don’t like that either, but that’s what austerity is.” The new rule comes into force on Monday, June 5. It means that households who won’t pay will have to get rid of their own green waste. Residents who subscribe will be provided with a licence sticker to attach to their green bin to identify that they have paid for the service.

7 The library review is also being blamed on government cuts. Currently, there are no firm proposals - these are expected to come later in the year once the first round of consultation survey results have been analysed. The survey asks people which library they use, how often they use it, and at which times of the week. It also asks about what services people access there, such as computers, photocopiers, borrowing books or just reading a newspaper. Cllr Jeanie Bell, cabinet member for libraries, said: “The council remains fully committed to retaining a high quality library service, but we must look at how we will continue to offer a service that is right for local people, will serve us well in the years

ahead, and provide value for money, especially in times of reducing budgets. “We want to have a library service that is dynamic, exciting and meets the needs of our communities and most importantly, we want our community to help shape that transformation. “I urge everyone living, working or studying in St Helens, whether a library user or not, to get involved and take the time to complete this survey.” The consultation ends on Friday, April 21. To take part, visit www.sthelens.gov.uk/ librarysurvey2017 or pick up a printed copy at any St Helens library.

Scouting around for helpers Hundreds of youngsters are stuck on Scout group waiting lists because there aren’t enough adult volunteers.

“The only way to alleviate the problem is for more adult volunteers to become leaders and helpers to allow the organisation to grow, and let more girls and boys ‘join the adventure’.

Currently, there are 20 groups and six Explorer units across St Helens and Knowsley. These are providing activities for around 1,000 youngsters. However, a shortage of volunteers means waiting lists are growing.

“Becoming a helper or leader at your local Scout Group is a very rewarding and fun experience. You don’t need to know anything about Scouting as you would be given all the support and training you need. You just need the desire to work with young people.

Terry Gregson, of St Helens Scouts, is now appealing for more people to step forward. He told Local Life: “The popularity of scouting has meant that many more young people want to join the organisation, but hundreds of them are stuck on waiting lists across St Helens and Knowsley, as many of the groups are full.

“You could give as little or as much time as you would like to, even just a couple of hours per month would help. “The rewards are massive as you see young people fulfil their potential through an exciting programme of activities, and enjoy yourself in the process.

A Reason To Leave, written and directed by Norman Gregory, came top in three categories at The International Filmmaker Festival of World Cinema - London 2017 Awards. Norman, who grew up in Willis Close, Whiston, and went on to act in Brookside, made the film in 2015 and it has received rave reviews. It follows the story of a middle-aged man, Harry, whose gambling and drinking leads him to the brink. Nursery’s funding boost A St Helens charity has donated a specialised changing table to a local nursery to cater for two young children with additional needs. The Helen Marie Friends charity - founded in 1985 by Arthur and Marjorie Hurst in memory of their daughter – donated the mobi changer to General Day Nursery in Sherdley Road following an application from Michelle Bamford an Advanced Practitioner for Autistic Spectrum Disorder at 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Costing £2,000, the mobi changer can be easily manoeuvred from room to room making it an extremely cost effective option for a multi-user environment.

Michelle said: “I wanted to find a way to enable two of the children I work with, Benjamin and Eva, to be able to stay in nursery and have their toileting needs met safely. I was delighted when I heard that the funding had been agreed - it will make such a positive difference.”

Uncovering local

history

David Sudworth discovers the hidden stories beneath St Helens’ oldest building

I

t was built before Henry VIII became King, Francis Drake circumnavigated the globe or the United Kingdom was formed. Yet the only reason 602-year-old Windleshaw Chantry still stands is due to its lack of value. “At the time of the Catholic Reformation, it was said to be valued at £4 and 10 shillings, so it wasn’t worth knocking down. They probably took the roof off, but

that’s about it,” says local historian Ted Forsyth. Yet these days, the one-and-a-half acre site, adjacent to St Helens Cemetery, is priceless for connecting the past with the present day. Although he was synonymous with Ashton-inMakerfield, it was Sir Thomas Gerard who built the Grade II listed chantry, which opened on June 21, 1415.

23 “The Gerards also had land at Windle. In those days, moneyed people built chantries for themselves and their families,” explained Ted. While the building itself is steeped in history, the real stories are in its graveyard. Volunteers regularly unearth grave stones which have sunk in the mud and not seen for, in some cases, hundreds of years. There’s also a cross with some graffiti inscribed by Thomas Martendale in 1627. For Ted, 75, a former Lowe House School pupil who grew up on Oldfield Street, in Gerards Bridge, it’s an endless source of fascination.

Graffiti from 1627 on the graveyard cross

“There’s around 9,000 people buried in here as some graves take 13-plus people. It’s still a working graveyard and, provided you have a plot already reserved, you can still be buried here.

“9,000 people are buried in here” “We know there were burials as early as 1644 but the earliest recorded one is in 1667 of an Abigail Houghton, whose funeral was at St Mary’s in Prescot.” The graveyard is the final resting place of 28 priests and one bishop. “At that time, Catholics were persecuted in this country so a bishop couldn’t be buried. They got round this by claiming that the deceased preached abroad. For instance, Bishop John Penswick, who died in 1836 and is buried here, preached in ‘Europum’ according to the tombstone.

A volunteer helps uncover a sunken gravestone

“Back then, there was no way of checking whether Europum was a real place or not.” However, not all foreign links with the chantry are bogus: “We know there is a woman buried here who is from the Seychelles, but we don’t have a name. There’s about 100 years’ worth of records that are missing, and the name on her grave stone has rubbed off.

An impression of the chantry from the 1800s

24 “There’s also a few French people here. One of them is Jean-Baptiste Francois Graux de la Bruyere, who died aged 48 in 1787. He is the man who was responsible for bringing glass making to the town and who became the first manager of Ravenhead glassworks.” The state of the graves vary. While some are in good condition, some have either toppled over, or are in the process of doing so. One of the saddest sights is a family tomb owned by the Gerard family. The ravages of time have left it with broken masonry, rusted railings and trees growing out of it. “We know it’s the Gerards but we are not sure how many are buried in it. We don’t have the records and, as far as I know, there aren’t any Gerards left in the area anymore. If they wanted to claim it and maintain it, that would be great.” Maintenance of the grounds is a big task and currently volunteer numbers are low. “We definitely need more people. We do things like cut the grass and have planted around 2,000 bulbs. We’ve uncovered about 300 graves in total but know there are many more.

Ted with the crumbling Gerard family tomb “We have around 13 volunteers but regularly there’s a group of about four of us. We usually meet on Sundays from 10am-4pm during the spring/ summer time, so we’ll be out again this weekend, weather permitting.” For more information, visit www. windleshawchantry.org.uk or search for ‘Chantry St Helens’ on Facebook.

France By Kate Whitin

hen it was announced last year that Martin, 44, was stepping down as the face of the popular BBC cookery show, there was a national outpouring of emotion, which took him by surprise. “When it was compared to One Direction splitting up, that was a bit excessive, but you don’t realise,” he says. “People around me said, ‘You’re going to be missed’, and I went, ‘Oh, I doubt it’. All I saw was seven cameramen, I never saw three million people. It’s very humbling, but what can you say? It’s just a food show.” Those who’ve been missing Martin’s cheeky-chappie persona have no doubt been watching him cook his way around France, in new ITV series James Martin’s French Adventure.

omelette, or he gets p***ed off and downs tools. He made food fun and accessible.”

Over the course of 20-episodes, he’s visiting foodie regions from Provence to Brittany and paying tribute to his late friend - and “still the best” TV cook - Keith Floyd, who made his home in L’Isle sur la Sorgue, and in whose old Citroen 2CV Martin drives around the country.

The same could be said for Martin, who grew up on a farm on the Castle Howard estate in North Yorkshire, and first fell in love with France on family holidays. At just 12 years old, he started training in the kitchen at the Hostellerie de Plaisance in St Emilion - and makes an emotional return in the series.

“He was one of the first ones, where he took that bench away. Before that, it was almost like a school lecture,” Martin recalls of Floyd’s pioneering role in TV cooking. “He never pretended to be a famous chef, he was an amazing foodie, with a vast knowledge and he was brilliant with people.

He also called up old friend and mentor Michel Roux Sr, and spent “one of the most memorable days of my

“[Watching Floyd], you never knew what would happen, it was edge-of-the-seat stuff, where the irate woman in Marseilles is kicking off about the

life” cooking in his garden near St Tropez. The book that accompanies the series is bursting with French classics - you’ll find French onion soup, moules mariniere, steak au poivre and, of course, creme brulee and pain au chocolat, which Martin admits he once had an unhealthy addiction to. Let the chef inspire you, with two classic French recipes from his new book...

Baked eggs with bayonne ham & parsley cream

Serves 4 Ingredients 40g butter, softened 4-8 slices Bayonne ham 8 eggs 2tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley 100ml double cream Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Crusty French bread, to serve

Method Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas mark 2. Generously butter four individual ovenproof dishes or ramekins and place on a baking tray. Divide the ham slices between the dishes, laying them over the base and up the sides. Crack two eggs into each dish and then top with some of the parsley and the cream. Season with salt and pepper and bake for 12-15 minutes until the eggs are just set. Scatter over a little more parsley and serve warm, with crusty French bread.

French fruit tart

Method Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to a large rectangle, then cut out a 36cm x 20cm rectangle and place on a lightly greased baking tray. Using a sharp knife, score a 2cm frame around the edge, making sure you don’t cut the pastry all the way through. Brush the border with beaten egg, taking care not to allow any to dribble down the sides, because this will prevent the pastry from rising evenly. Prick the base of the tart (not the border) with a fork, then chill in the fridge for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/gas mark 6.

Serves 6 Ingredients 1 x 320g ready-made puff pastry sheet 1 egg, beaten 85g dark chocolate, broken into pieces (optional) 300ml double cream 200ml ready-made chilled custard 12 strawberries, hulled and halved 150g blueberries 150g raspberries 200g redcurrants 150g seedless black or green grapes, halved

Bake the pastry until golden brown and crisp, about 20-25 minutes. Slide onto a wire rack and leave to cool. Once cooled, gently press the centre of the pastry down to leave the frame around the edge. Melt the chocolate (if using) in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of just simmering water, taking care that the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Brush the melted chocolate over the pastry base, keeping clear of the frame. Leave to set. In a large bowl, whip the cream to soft peaks, then gently fold in the custard. Spoon over the pastry base, spreading it out evenly. Draw shallow lines in the cream mixture to create five sections and arrange the fruit on top so that each section is of a contrasting colour.

Cuerden C

by David Sudworth

uerden is one of those words which, the longer you look at it, the stranger it seems.

Theories are mixed as to its etymology. Some say it’s from the Welsh for ‘rowan’ (cerdinen). Others think it could be an Anglicisation of coeur de lion (French for lionheart). Also, is it ‘kew-er-den’ or ‘curden’? What a palaver - I’m sure the locals take great pleasure in hearing visitors mangle its pronunciation! Anyhow, regardless of these minor matters, Cuerden is a lovely spot to spend the afternoon. Its country park - all 650 acres - is owned by a Trust and was bought to create a park for the New Town developments in Chorley, Preston and Longridge.

Although bisected by no fewer than three motorways - M6, M65 and M61 - the noise from these tend to melt into the background fairly quickly. We head off from the car park at The Barn, Berkeley Drive, Bamber Bridge, (PR5 6BY) and follow the path down into the park. As we approach the first gate we turn left, taking the path towards Cuerden Hall. This fine building, which dates back to 1717, is now a Sue Ryder home. In World War I, it was used as a hospital and during the 1939-1945 conflict, it was used by the Territorial Army. Passing the front of the hall we head out along the

42

driveway until we reach a small path on our right. This takes you onto the Cinder Path - a walled walkway which is actually a bit surreal. The walls are fairly high on both sides and, at one point, I was convinced we’d stepped into a drained moat. Follow the Cinder Path until it emerges on to National Cycle Route 55. Here we go right, heading back into the park and down to the river. If you have wellies on, it’s a great chance to test them out for watertightness as there’s a ford crossing the river. Be aware though - the current is strong and anyone who is of a nervous disposition would do well to give it a miss! After confirming that my wellies (a tenner from a well-known supermarket) were free of any water ingress, we crossed the footbridge and headed up the path through the trees. We passed the pond on our left and climbed up through the field. I am known in the office for my loathing of anything steeper than a mole hill, so this proved a bit testing,

44 although I persevered. I can hear the praise from my GP now. Going through the gate we keep to our right and follow the path. Before you know it you are walking along a lane which emerges on Sheep Hill Lane. At this point cross the road and head right until you reach the first road on your left. This is Glenmore, which you turn into and follow for a while until you reach the gated path on your left. Go through the gate and follow this path, keeping to the left where the path splits. From here you continue down the hill, round to your left, over a footbridge and up the hill.

Cinder Path A straight line with walls at either side, the Cinder Path immediately sets enquiring minds racing. Apparently, the story of the path can be traced back to December 1816 when 21-year-old Robert Townley-Parke took possession of Cuerden Hall. Local historians say the Cinder Path was a local right of way, and could even been part of a Roman road. Townley-Parke is said to have tried in vain to close the path so he built a high stone wall along its length so that people using the path could not see into his property. Where the path crossed his driveway, he built a tunnel which is now a bat roost. The Townley-Parkers were very private and apparently employed several gamekeepers. Trespassers and poachers were vigorously prosecuted. One local legend has it that a man, who visiting someone in Bamber Bridge one evening, was using the path as a short cut when he came across a couple of poachers who, thinking the man was a gamekeeper, savagely beat him to death in the tunnel.

Here you go right, taking the path out onto Back Lane. Cross the road and go left until you reach the public foot path by the side of the farm track. Follow this path, keeping to the left where it splits and crossing Wood End Road. The path continues to wind its way along to another split, where this time you go right, through the woods and out around the fields, down towards the river. Crossing the foot bridge you emerge at the site of Lower Kem Mill. From here you go right along National Cycle Route 55, following it back up the valley. Where the path meets the main road you cross over, go right, over the bridge, and left into the park again. Continue along NCR 55 until you reach a path on your left. Take this path over the bridge, up the hill and back to the car park. In total, this five mile walk is a pleasant way to pass the afternoon. There’s a good mixture of history and rural/semi rural scenery. My only gripe, as alluded to at the beginning, is that Cuerden should be easier to pronounce for us non-locals. But when set against such lovely scenery, I admit it’s a small price to pay...

Toyota

oyota aims to bring something fresh to the growing compact Crossover segment with its C-HR. Here, concept car looks are matched to proven mechanicals that include a hybrid powerplant. If you’re thinking of buying something Qashqai-sized in this class or one of the trendier compact models, then this fashionable contender could be exactly what you’re looking for. What if you want a fashionable little Crossover like a Nissan Juke? If that’s the case, you may have been a little put off by the cramped interior and rather average build quality. So what if another contender came along that was even trendier, better made, more efficient and not that much more expensive? You’d be interested wouldn’t you? Well that’s exactly what’s being offered here in the form of Toyota’s C-HR. ‘C-HR’ is supposed to stand for ‘Coupe HighRider’ and sure enough, this car has a very coupestyle look.

C-HR The C-HR is being offered with two familiar engines from Toyota’s Auris hatch. The most affordable variant gets a 114bhp 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine and is available with a six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic - and front or all-wheel drive. Alternatively, buyers can choose a full hybrid powertrain with 120bhp, but that’s 2WD-only. For the C-HR, Toyota has made its hybrid system lighter and more efficient, and engineered it to give sharper performance. Detailed design changes to the 1.8-litre hybrid engine have resulted in 40% thermal efficiency - a world-beating level for a petrol unit. As for handling, well the major issue with taller Crossovers of this sort related to bodyroll and its detrimental effect on ride comfort. Huge efforts have therefore gone into structuring this model’s TNGA platform and giving it a low centre of gravity

46

so that the car doesn’t pitch about through the corners. Steering feel has been emphasised too, something else that tends to be lacking on this class of car. Toyota’s first proper entrant in the Crossover segment should cause quite a stir, styled with a combination of a coupe-like upper body and the powerful underpinnings of an SUV. This styling contrasts with the pronounced flaring of the wheel arches which gives C-HR a wide and powerful stance. Inside, layered architecture for

the instrument panel aims to create a warm and welcoming feel and there’s an 8-inch ‘Toyota Touch 2’ multimedia system that’s angled slightly towards the driver. Overall, there’s a high quality feel to the cabin and decorative parts around the dash are finished in high-quality piano black and satin silver trim. A hybrid-powered C-HR can return up to 78.5mpg on the combined cycle and up to 82g/km of CO2. The alternative engine is a 1.2-litre petrol turbo unit. In front-driven form, this manages up to 51.9mpg

47 on the combined cycle and up to 125g/km of CO2. Specify the CVT auto gearbox and those figures fall only slightly to 48.7mpg and 134g/km. Go for the CVT gearbox and AWD and you’re looking at 45.6mpg and 143g/km. We can see a ready market for this C-HR. We think the styling will attract many, but there are other product strong points too. Proven hybrid technology brings the potential for impressive efficiency and we rate the more conventional 1.2-litre petrol engine too. Plus C-HR buyers will like the sharp handling and the strong standards of safety and media connectivity. Style and sense combined then? Quite a few buyers in this segment may well think that.

ne of my top garden design principles is always to include more than one seating area in a garden. We have a tendency in this country to sit near the back door of the house which is fine but it severely limits the possibilities of engaging with our gardens and using them to their full potential. Having more than one seating area gives you a different view of the garden and also means you can make the most of sitting in the sun as it moves around your plot. Whenever possible I include some planting around a seating area whether this be a border or a raised bed. If you have a raised bed you can incorporate impromptu seating or a bespoke built in bench to give extra seating when entertaining family and friends.

encourage you to venture out into the garden and beyond the patio near the back door. You will be amazed at how different your garden looks from a different angle and it can become a retreat, a little hideaway – see the arbour seat in the photo taken from my garden.

When you have decided on where you want your seating area, try and find furniture that can stay outside all year round. There is nothing quite as depressing as seeing a patio in winter, bare of furniture because it has been stacked away in an already burgeoning shed.

So now that spring has most definitely sprung, revisit your seating areas and add an extra one.

If you have a small garden, you can still have more than one seating area, even if it is just a bench or Arbour seat in the corner of the garden. It will
