That’s roughly how much it costs to produce your Local Life magazine and deliver it to you. That’s 50p for those of you who are from a post-decimal age. So, I’m going to be cheeky now and ask a favour in return. Don’t fret, it doesn’t involve you putting your hand in your pocket, all I want to ask if you could spare five minutes to do our 2014 Editorial Survey on our website.

16 20 23 28 32 35 36 39 42 44 46 50

You see, we want to be absolutely sure we’re covering the sorts of topics you want to see. For all we know, you may be sick to the back teeth of Jack and his Tracks and be itching to try Tuvan throat singing instead. That’s why it makes sense to actually ask you what you like and dislike about Local Life every now and again. By doing this, you stand a chance of getting a publication through the door that you really want to read. Also, if you do the survey at www.locallife247. co.uk, you could even win the £100 cash that we are giving away to one lucky reader who completes the survey. You might not win, but then again if you don’t try you’ll never know. So here’s that website again www.locallife247.co.uk. Oh, and you might be wondering exactly where the 50p comes from to pay for your mag? That’d be from our loyal band of advertisers, who pay every month for an advertisement in the magazine. So if you do value your Local Life, then please support them by making sure that Local Life is your first port of call whenever you need a product or service. See you next time

On The Map

Bokwa Classes

Local groups, organisations and venues can put themselves on the map later this year when the national Heritage Open Days programme celebrates the area’s history, architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to properties. This year St Helens Council is again coordinating the local event, which takes place between September 11 and 14.

Bokwa classes are held from 8pm-9pm on Mondays at Brook Lodge Primary, Rufford Road, Rainford. Bokwa is different to other dance workouts as there are no choreography or counting steps. Participants draw letters and numbers with their feet, while moving together to music in free form rhythm.

Last year over 20 historic venues across the borough opened their doors to the public, including St Helens Town Hall and the Gamble Building. Others included The World of Glass, the Smithy Heritage Centre, St Helens Masonic Hall, St Helens Parish Church, Mill Street Volunteer Hall and Mansion House. Organisers want to see even more taking part in 2014 and would welcome additional enquiries from those who haven’t been involved in the past. Those interested in taking part should contact Gary Maddock on 01744 676731 or email garymaddock@sthelens.gov.uk

With other award winners, including Linzi Prescott for her indefatigable work for the community. Despite retiring as one of Rainford’s borough councillors two years ago after more than three decades, Betty continues to help local people where possible as well as caring for her husband, Raymond. Betty received the award on the same evening as ex-St Helens Rugby League star Steve Prescott, who died in November aged 39 from a rare form of cancer, was given a posthumous award. His widow, Linzi, received it on his behalf.

Betty, of Heyes Avenue, with her award

Betty, who received an MBE in 1995 and was also Mayor of St Helens Borough, said: “I was humbled but proud to receive the Fellowship Award. I’ve always tried to do my best by people and even now, people still contact me asking for my advice on how to tackle a problem they have.”

Rainford Pub Plan

Witness Walk

A disused Rainford pub could be turned into flats. Plans have been submitted to St Helens Council to convert the former Bridge Inn on Ormskirk Road into four selfcontained flats.

This year’s United Procession of Witness by Billinge churches will be held on Sunday, June 29. It starts at 2pm from St Aidan’s School on London Fields and proceed along the following route: Newton Road, Main Street, Rainford Road, Birchley Road and Trent Road before assembling on St Mary’s Field where a short service will take place, weather permitting.

According to information submitted to planners, each apartment would have two bedrooms, a bathroom, a lounge and a kitchen. The two ground floor apartments would have a patio while the first floor apartments would have a balcony. Outside, there are proposals for six parking spaces, a bin store and footpath. The application is now out for public consultation, and the deadline for responses is May 7. To view the plans online, visit www.sthelens.gov.uk. The application reference is P/2014/0328.

The collection this year will be shared between the St Helens Deaf Youth and Playgroup as well as the Salvation Army.

On The Bright Side David Sudworth meets the inspirational Billinge grandmother who helped her husband battle Alzheimer’s Disease for 10 years In a corner of Joan Crank’s living room in Billinge, an electronic photo display shows images from her beloved husband Dave’s 70th birthday party. Held at their local club, Birchley St Mary’s, on Trent Road, it was a big occasion. An Elvis tribute act was booked, friends and family brought presents, hugs were exchanged and laughter filled the room. Dave, from Avon Road, had been battling with Alzheimer’s Disease for almost 10 years, and each day was precious. “Living life one day at a time was becoming increasingly important,” recalls Joan. Nine months later, Dave’s brave battle was coming to an end. As, he passed away his daughters, Susan and Jane, said: “Love you Dad.” By 1.10pm on May 23, 2012, he was gone. Sadly, the condition which Dave was diagnosed with back in 2002 is becoming increasingly commonplace. Alzheimer’s affects around 496,000 people in the UK alone. One in 14 are over the age of 65 and one in six are aged 80-plus. Dave, who is originally from Kirkdale, and Joan, who hails from Garston, met while working at Blue Cap Foods in Gateacre. “I worked in the site shop and Dave would come in every day for his lunch and some cigarettes. He was shy and didn’t get round to asking me out until my leaving party two years later!” says Joan.

20

“He said: ‘Your husband has a condition… that I cannot treat. I will refer him to a consultant in old age psychiatric conditions will be able to treat him.’ “I remember grabbing Dave’s hand and asked the doctor what the condition was. He just said ‘dementia’ and I can still hear the sharp intake of breath from Dave. We sat in the hospital car park in tears. I tried to stay positive on the outside but inside I was all over the place. It gave us the spur to do as many things as we could.” Over the next few years, they travelled the world, visiting places such as South Africa, Singapore, the Caribbean, Canada and New Zealand. They celebrated their ruby wedding anniversary in August 2003 and a month later renewed their wedding vows on the QE2 while cruising around Brazil, Uruguay, the Falklands, Senegal and the Canaries. On their wedding day in 1963 They married in 1963 and two years later, moved to the newly-built Avon Road, where Joan still lives today: “The mortgage was £3,125 – my mum thought we were off our heads but we wanted our own place. She likened it to emigrating as visiting involved catching three buses. We always loved living here, it’s such a nice area and the people are very friendly.” Dave worked at Carborundum in Rainford, Nacanco in Skelmersdale and latterly at Ravenhead Brickworks in Up Holland, while Joan qualified as a mature student to work as a nursery nurse at Billinge Hospital. She retired in 2000 after two decades of service. Shortly after retiring, Joan started noticing a change in Dave: “He’d do the crossword every day, it was always important to him, but he started getting very impatient and slinging it or scribbling holes in the paper. He’d also previously be reading three books a week but he’d start dozing off, which was unlike him, or sometimes reading them upside down. I think he knew something terrible was happening but didn’t want to tell anyone.”

Renewing their wedding vows on the QE2 in 2003

The couple always liked to travel, and it was during a cruise down China’s famous Yangtze River that a fellow passenger remarked to Joan about Dave’s speech. Along with other indicators, it was the prompt to seek medical advice. He underwent a brain scan and the results were devastating: “The doctor seemed as nervous as we were. Clearly he hadn’t had a lot of experience in breaking bad news to people, or at least to someone as young and healthy looking as Dave, who was 60 at the time.

However, while remaining positive, they occasionally came up against some people’s inconsiderate comments: “While on the cruise, we joined some fellow guests who were discussing health issues in old age. One of the men put two fingers to his head and said: ‘I know one thing… if I ever get Alzheimer’s I want a gun putting to my head.’ At that moment, Dave gripped my hand under the table. I wanted to say that having

Alzheimer’s isn’t that bad, just look at us cruising around South America! After we left, Dave and I had a bit of a giggle over what their faces would have been like if I had said that.” They also discovered the invaluable support offered by organisations such as St Helens Carers’ Centre and the Alzheimer’s Society, which led to them attending annual conferences. They also went on a protest march regarding the national furore surrounding the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) plan to stop advising the prescription of drugs such as Aricept on the NHS on the grounds they were not cost effective. NICE eventually abandoned their plans.

cousin Barry, friends Arth and Jim, and Dave’s nephews, Andrew and Stephen. His favourite hymn, How Great Thou Art, filled the church. This was followed by a short service at St Helens Crematorium. As with the church service, it was standing room only and the final song was Dave’s old favourite, Always Look On The Bright Side of Life from Monty Python’s celebrated film, Life of Brian. Among those paying their final respects were former parish priest Father Ashton, who despite being in his 90s and living in Cheshire, made the journey up. It was a mark of respect for Dave, who had loved being involved in village life. He had been Father Christmas for the youth club parties for a number of years, helped organise youth discos, was a committee member at St Mary’s and was on the club’s bowls team. Two years on since his passing and Joan, now 71, has continued working with the Alzheimer’s Society, the St Helens Carers’ Centre and is a trustee of the St Helens Mind Charity. She’s also recently written a book on her experience, entitled Always Look On The Bright Side – Our Travels with Alzheimer’s.

On a protest march in 2006 “As we marched along, someone shouted to Dave ‘What are you marching for, mister?’ and quick as a flash Dave shouted ‘Drugs!’ I didn’t have time to see the expressions on their faces but the policeman marshalling us had a broad smile on his.” As the years went by, Dave’s condition deteriorated. He was finding it difficult in busy places and they went out less. However, he always enjoyed seeing his family, especially his grandchildren. He received day care at Kavanagh Place in his native Kirkdale, but Joan would remain by his side. She’d take him over to St Mary’s for his Friday pint, which by that stage had become a weak shandy. During his final month, Dave had become less talkative, sleeping more. Joan describes it movingly as his “lights were going out one by one.” Dave’s funeral was held at Birchley St Mary’s Church, his coffin carried in by his brother Edward, Joan’s

Our Travels With Alzh eimer’s Joan Crank get over the fact that it was actually Dave who was the marvellous and brave one. He was a wonderful man, that’s why him being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s was so hard because it changed him. “Dave is at peace now after a determined battle. At The Coalface… David Sudworth examines one St Helens pit worker’s tussles with Arthur Scargill in the run up to the 1984 Miners’ Strike… Anyone who calls their autobiography Battered Cherub has to have a degree of wit and self-deprecation. With Joe Gormley, he had it by the bucketload. Written shortly before the 1984 Miners’ Strike – which began 30 years ago - the book charts the rise of Gormley from the coalfields of St Helens to the very top of the then all-powerful National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). By the time Gormley had put pen to paper, he’d stepped down from the post of NUM President. But his battles with his successor, Arthur Scargill, who was getting ready to do battle with Margaret Thatcher, led him to pen a number of not-so-thinly veiled attacks on the Yorkshire-born firebrand. “Arthur may have made a lot of promises about how he will never change his philosophies, but he will find out soon enough you can’t be fighting battles all your life,” warned Gormley. “There comes a moment in negotiations when you have to say to yourself: ‘This is all we’re going to get, and there’s no sense in pushing for any more’.” Born on July 5, 1917, in Ashton, his first job aged 14 was at Wood Pit in Haydock, where his dad Johnny worked. At the time, it was owned by the Richard Evans Company, which ran a number of mines in the area.

owners wouldn’t allow the union branch secretary to have an office on the premises. Joining was voluntary and cost threepence a week. It seemed a hell of a lot to me and the time.”

“As soon as I got paid (ten shillings and threepence a week), my father said: ‘You see that window over there? Go and get joined up in the union.’ He wouldn’t take no for an answer. The window was the trade union cabin, which was just outside the pit gates, because the

Later in 1932, he got a job at Stones Pit in Garswood and, following a brief interlude in Staffordshire, went to work at the famous Bold Colliery in St Helens. At this time, he started getting actively involved in politics and in 1954 was elected onto the rock solid Labour domain

32

of Ashton Council. In 1956, he was also elected as Bold Colliery’s delegate to the Lancashire Miners’ Meeting. His star was beginning to rise and six years later, he joined the NUM’s National Executive. This national role eventually catapulted him to become NUM President in 1971. Gormley was generally seen as non-confrontational in his approach. It’s perhaps therefore ironic that soon after taking up his post, he led his men into the first industrial action since 1926. The strike, which came about after the Government’s offer of a 7.9% pay rise was rejected, left homes and businesses without power for up to nine hours a day as a three day week was imposed. A state of emergency was declared during the seven week-long action. They eventually returned to work having agreed a £95m pay package along with extra concessions from the National Coal Board. However, the outbreak of harmony was short-lived and by 1974, the NUM had once again locked horns with Prime Minister Edward Health and his Conservative Government. Exasperated by the running battles with the NUM, Heath called a snap General Election by posing the question of ‘Who Governs Britain?’ His answer came when the voters returned Harold Wilson and a Labour Government, albeit with a wafer-thin majority. Although Gormley was credited with bringing down the Heath Government, it wasn’t a label he wore comfortably and at one point even tried to get the planned strike called off until after the General Election. However, upon taking office, the threatened four week stoppage was ditched anyway when Wilson met the miners’ demands.

Arthur Scargill

own Government, and she ordered the mass stockpiling of coal to prevent a re-run of the early ‘70s power cuts. It’s now widely accepted that Scargill overplayed his hand when, in March 1984, he led members out despite not holding a national ballot. Indeed, Gormley observed: “Any fool can lead men out on strike, but it takes a leader to get them back.’ But by this time, Gormley was watching from the sidelines, having retired from the NUM presidency in 1982. He was elevated to the House of Lords in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. After a series of stokes, Gormley died in May 1993 and was buried in his native Ashton. It was later reported in a BBC documentary that Gormley was a Special

Gormley told the press: “We have proved that when the spirit and willingness is there, a settlement can be achieved in one day rather than the long drawn out exercise we have been involved in unnecessarily.” But privately, Gormley was worried about creeping militancy in the NUM, and he was often at odds with his own Executive Committee which he admitted left him feeling “hamstrung” at times. The amount of victories chalked up by the NUM – largely as a result of Government capitulation – is widely seen as the reason why the left-wing Scargill, a much more combative figure than Gormley, later on believed he could take on the Thatcher Government and win. But as a member of the Heath cabinet, Thatcher was determined not to allow the NUM to bring down her

Branch informer who passed on details of Scargill’s and other miners’ plans for industrial action in the 1970s. In response, Scargill said: “The history of our movement is littered with people in leadership positions who were either connected with Special Branch or connected with the State.” Joe Gormley’s passing prompted national press coverage. One lengthy piece, published in The Independent, noted: “He was one of the last of a breed of union chiefs who had enough industrial muscle to change the course of political history. In the mining communities he will be remembered with love and affection - as a man who gave them the glimpse of the good life.” Photos courtesy of Sutton Beauty and Heritage www.suttonbeauty.org.uk

Going Underground Despite the growing power of the NUM under Joe Gormley’s leadership, local pits had been in steady decline since the 1950s. By the time of the 1984 strike there were only a handful left in the St Helens and Wigan area. Among them were Bold (1976-1985), Cronton, Whiston (1914-1984), Parkside (1957-1993), Sutton Manor (1906-1991) and Quaker House, Billinge (1950-1991) Among those which closed before 1984 included: Wood Pit, Haydock (1866-1971), Ravenhead, St Helens (1866-1968), Lea Green, St Helens (18771964), Clock Face, St Helens (1904-1966), Old Meadows, Haydock (1860-1969), Lyme, Haydock (1876-1964), Old Boston, Haydock (1884-1952) and Garswood Hall (1887-1958).

Jack’s Tracks

Bretherton The villages of rural Chorley and West Lancashire are among the prettiest in the county. Steeped in history, the landscape is virtually unchanged for generations. Coupled with the fact there are no steep hills to contend with, going for a stroll around these parts is always a pleasure.

36

We park up by the 19th Century St John’s Church on South Road, Bretherton, and take a very short walk westwards until we see the signage for the public footpath. This path runs on what appears at first glance to be a private driveway, but it soon veers off onto what is unmistakeably a public right of way. It is a little narrow and overgrown in parts so take care. Eventually, the view widens before our eyes and we follow a straight line directly south until we hit Back Lane. Continue across Back Lane and go straight on, where you will be greeted by the full expanse of Lancashire countryside. The best thing about this walk can be found in the fact it’s so versatile. When we went, it had rained almost constantly for a week, yet the fertile soil in these parts did a sterling job to absorb it. Save for a few large-ish puddles, evidence of precipitation was mostly hidden. About half way down, we took a right hand turn which eventually met up with Eyes Lane.

It’s easy living in built up areas to assume certain things. For instance, electricity cables are always underground, yet here in the agricultural belt, it’s transmitted via pylons. I sense some may think I’m mad, but rather than labelling them as metal monstrosities which detract from nature, they actually add something to the landscape. I’m not saying I’m ready to go all in and join the Pylon Appreciation Society (yes, it does exist apparently – established in 1999 and I’m told membership is £15 a year) but I can understand the attraction. With the right weather, they can also make for some dramatic photo opportunities.

tarmacadam, we crack open an energy replenishing choccie bar as a reward. It’s not long before we come across the delightful hamlet of Sollom, complete with mini village green, beautiful stone cottages and horses grazing in a nearby paddock. You’ll see from the map that we took the Back Lane track between Sollom and

We carry on to the bridges which traverse the River Douglas and the Rufford branch of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, but not before we do our good deed for the day and help some poor fella whose car got stuck in mud just off Eyes Lane. Tarleton. If you decide to follow suit, then I’d sound a word of caution – there’s a fair amount of hard core debris on the ground, so you may want to think about crossing over the A59 to use the roadside pavement if you have small children or a dog with you.

At Your Service

Soon enough, we arrive at St Mary’s Church, Tarleton, a small chapel which in many ways gives a glimpse into what life must have been like in these parts before the advent of the motor car and ensuing thunderous traffic which rolls past it each day. The traffic on this part of the A59 is relentless but respite is within sight as we go across Bank Bridge which takes us back over the Douglas. We come across the old Bank Hall estate Lodge on the right hand side which, in the early part of the year, is set in a landscape dotted with snowdrops. The adjacent field has a public footpath via a stile which we use to make our way towards the main Bank Hall Estate. It’s worth bearing in mind that the Hall is usually only open a handful of Sundays a year – see www.bankhall. org for more details. After a brief stop, we step back on to Eyes Lane before turning left at Rose Grove Farm and heading north on Back Lane. At the junction, turn right on to South Road and carry on straight back to the car – easier said than done for us as we came across the quaint Old Bakery and its enticing display of cakes, breads and shelves stuffed with preserves. I could hear my belt breathing a sigh of relief when I realised I had no cash with me… I won’t make the same mistake next time though!

At first glimpse, St Mary’s looks like any other functioning church. However, it was last used in 1980 and for the past 32 years has been looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust. Built in the 1717, the site itself was consecrated in the early 1500s when a chantry chapel was erected there. It was eventually demolished and it 1719, Henrietta Maria Legh of Bank Hall donated the land on which the church stands today. It’s said the Grade II listed Georgian building has no electricity but has a number of oil lamps as part of its unspoiled interior, which includes box pews, open benches, stone flagged floors, a reading desk and a west gallery that extends along the south wall, all lit by clear glass in large round-headed windows.

Test Drive - by Tim Barnes-Clay

TRAX

CHEVROLET The Trax went on sale in August 2013 and can be yours for as little as £15,495. It’s the newest addition to the Chevrolet family and is available with a diesel or petrol engine. You can also choose to have two-wheel or all-wheel-drive (AWD). I decided to get behind the wheel of the 1.4T AWD LT. At £19,795 this variant is straying away from the ‘affordable’ price-tag, but with 138 horses and a turbocharger under the bonnet, it’s one of best in the Trax line-up. So what is it? Well, it’s cast in the style of a small Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) but without the

archetypal running costs. It all sounds a bit ‘Mickey Mouse’, but you’re in good hands if you buy a Trax. You see, Chevrolet lays claim to inventing the first ever SUV with the introduction of the Carryall Suburban in 1935. Today, nearly 80 years later, the Trax is the modern expression of the company. Yes, it’s got SUV in its DNA, but with a big twist of funkiness to boot. Conveying brawniness, and agility, the Trax looks good. A grille featuring the iconic Chevrolet bowtie logo, prominent wheel arches, powerfully built rear haunches, and a fast, rearward-swept roofline are key elements that define the car’s exterior. The cabin is also well turned-out. It’s practical, wellorganised and characterised by sinuous lines. The rear seat row even boasts an electrical socket that can be used for recharging laptops and other electronic devices without the need for an adapter.

Storage facilities are abundant too. Compartments include an under-seat storage tray and two glove boxes, one of which contains a USB outlet that enables connectivity for your iPod or smart phone.

FAST FACTS •

Max speed: 121mph

The Trax’s boot space isn’t massive because, let’s face it, this car is a compact vehicle. That said, it does a lot with what it’s got. Without a spare tyre, there’s more room available under the cargo floor. It comes in handy for storing items securely – but not so convenient if you get a puncture and have to use the do-it-yourself repair kit, which comes in lieu of the emergency wheel.

0-62 mph: 9.8secs

Combined mpg: 44.1

Engine: 1364 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve turbo petrol

Max. power (bhp): 138 at 6000 rpm

Max. torque (Ib/ft): 147 at 1850 rpm

CO2: 94 g/km

Driving the Trax is a pleasure. It’s been tuned to deliver European driving dynamics and the car flies its own kite when it comes to sophisticated electronic aid systems. The car I drove came fitted with a six speed manual gearbox and petrol saving Stop/Start functionality. 0-62mph is achieved in 9.8 seconds and the top speed is 121mph.

Price: £19,795 on the road

The AWD system adapts to the road conditions and notably improves traction on slippery or gravelled roads. That’s a big bonus if you live in the countryside or you want a car that won’t give up the moment winter kicks in. The strength of its structural design makes the Trax very safe. Should the worst happen and the car rolls over, it’s been engineered to carry more than four times its own weight. What’s more, the Chevy is equipped with Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. Customary kit also includes Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control and Anti-Lock Brakes. Six airbags and ISOFX anchoring systems for children’s safety seats are equally part of the standard safety features onboard the Chevrolet Trax.

Garden Diary - by Angie Barker

Small really can be beautiful I often receive calls from clients who start off by apologising about the small size of their garden and asking whether it would be too small for my input. So many of us these days have a small garden but that doesn’t matter – any outside space is a wonderful addition to a home which is why we should make the most of every inch of space and make our gardens attractive, as well as practical, outdoor rooms. Small gardens do need extra consideration however and here a few pointers when thinking about the design of a small space: First of all decide what style you are going for and stick to that theme. For example should you want a contemporary garden, choose plants which will complete the look – Phormiums and Bamboos for example. A courtyard garden should use Buxus sempervirens (Box) hedges and topiary.

in the design whereas a more traditional style can use sweeping curves Don’t try to cram too much into a small space – less is more! Plants need to earn their keep so choose specimens which have long seasons of interest and a good balance of evergreens. Also limit your colour palette because too many colours in a small garden will make the borders appear cluttered If your garden is shady make the bold decision to remove the lawn as it will always struggle. There is a fantastic range of paving products available now and small cobble setts really suit a small garden You should incorporate a focal point and a large pot – unplanted – can do the trick perfectly. Similarly a bird bath, sun dial or sculpture Use the walls and fences to grow climbers which will green up the space and make it feel larger There are lots of clever storage solutions available these days and screening solutions to hide away those dreaded wheelie bins. Your garden wants to be a relaxing haven so you don’t want to be sat looking at the compost heap! I’m always telling Hubby that the best things come in small packages – he is not very tall at 5 feet 8 inches – but what there is of him is perfectly designed !

A contemporary scheme should use straight lines

Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.
