Summer
I
fever
recently returned from a whirlwind city break in Madrid, and I’d be lying if I said I couldn’t have “lost” my passport before I was due to return home. But alas, afternoons daydreaming in the sunshine and siestas must come to an end eventually. That being said, I think we can learn a thing or two from the Spaniards. The desire to try and take things at a gentler pace sometimes and relax in the company of family and friends is something I think we can all relate and aspire to. With the summer months fast approaching, it’s a great time to start this new mantra. And where better to connect with family and friends than by attend some of the events going on in the Leigh area over the next few weeks. From Friday, June 15 to Sunday, June 24 the 14th annual Prescot Festival will grace the town once more. It’ll be 10 days of arts, music, heritage, entertainment and culture. One not to be missed. Or if you’re looking ahead to July, why not take in the International Food and Drink Festival on Friday, July 6, and Saturday, July 7. It celebrates St Helens’ international relationships, particularly with Stuttgart and Chalon-sur-Saone. We hope you enjoy all our magazine has to offer. See you next time!

Saving the
greenery
A group who are campaigning against St Helens Council’s Local Plan held a car boot sale to support their cause. Rainhill Save Our Green Belt held a car boot sale at the Manor Farm pub on Mill Lane to raise funds to save the town’s green belt from housing development and improve the environment of the village. The group’s FB page said: “Just to acknowledge everybody who supported the first Rainhill Save Our Green belt car boot sale.
“It really was lovely welcoming Rainhill’s community and we will hold another. It was a glorious morning and summed up why we’re so passionate to protect our greenbelt.” St Helens Council is preparing a new Local Plan which will set how much new development for housing, employment and other uses should take place in the borough. It will identify where new development should take place and set out the policies for assessing planning applications, it is due to be released early summer.
“Thank you to those that sold, those that browsed and those that bought. And to our group members and volunteers and the fabulous stall holders.

Support for cancer An award-winning woodland venue will hold a special Father’s Day fundraiser in aid of a teenager with cancer. GreenAcres Rainford will host a community day on Father’s Day, Sunday June 17, to help raise vital funds for the Chris Carberry campaign. The campaign is to help others fighting cancer and was set up by 19-year-old Chris Carberry. Chris has fought a rare form of bone cancer, osteosarcoma twice and in October 2017 the cancer returned for the third time. Devastatingly this time around the cancer has come back with a vengeance and scans have shown Chris has two confirmed tumours near his bowel and prostate.
campaign The teenager has began a gruelling regime of chemotherapy at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in order to control and shrink the tumours enough for surgery. Due to the unlikeness of this happening, his best hope of survival is through alternative treatments and clinical trials abroad that cannot be funded for on the NHS. To support Chris, his family and others who have or have lost loved ones with cancer, GreenAcres will invite the community to their Father’s Day event. A GreenAcres spokesman said: “The urgency for this treatment is critical in giving Chris the best chance of survival. “Chris has not been given the luxury of time due to the severity of his relapse and the aggression his cancer is showing.
15 “We have just months to raise a significant amount to get the ball rolling and to get Chris in to treatment as soon as possible. Time is of the essence, but with the support Chris currently receives we are hopeful and certain we can do this. The ticketed only event will include a welcome drink on arrival, a bubble release, tea and cake and the opening of a new lavender memorial garden. GreenAcres Rainford, which has been instrumental in the UK development of a concept that has revolutionised the funeral industry, would like to give a special mention to Dave Bennett Planters who have donated handmade planters for the memorial garden. The event takes place from 11am at the centre on Blindfoot Road in Rianford (WA11 7HX) and will also commemorate fathers who are no longer here. The event will be held to support Chris Carberry.
Please reserve your tickets by donating a minimum of ÂŁ2 towards The Chris Carberry Fundraising Campaign. To book please call the park on 01744 649189.

Anniversary
special
A hundred and fifty years ago St Helens was formed after it received royal approval. In 1868 Queen Victoria granted the charter that incorporated the municipal borough of St Helens, bringing together the townships of Eccleston, Parr, Sutton and Windle. To mark the anniversary we have chosen a selection of nostalgic pictures which celebrates our proud town, the famous parade and more.

Made in
Dagenham
The story about women trying to change the world is making its way to Rainhill. 50 years ago, on June 7 1968, headlines were made when female machinists at the Ford Dagenham turned off their sewing machines, and walked out in protest over unfair pay grades. Now, in honour of the 50th anniversary of those events, Rainhill Musical Theatre Company is bringing the tale to the village.
then Employment Secretary. A deal was struck at the TUC conference and the women returned to work. This led to the concept of the 1970 equal pay act. Set in the 1960s, and based on the hit movie, ‘Made in Dagenham’ is an uplifting musical comedy about friendship, love and the importance of fighting for what is right.
The strike lasted three weeks; the women brought production in the UK to a halt and cost Ford Motor Company millions of pounds in lost orders.
The show will be at Rainhill Village Hall from Thursday, June 14 to Saturday, June 16. Tickets are £10 for adults and £8 for concessions from www. rainhillmusicaltheatrecompany.co.uk

Throughout the year, Alison Wilkinson, who teaches Spanish to KS2 pupils at Sutton Manor Primary School, has demonstrated a number of strengths in order for the Forest Road based community primary school to gain an ‘Enhancing’ Primary Languages Development Award.
Local Life require distributors for the following areas; St Helens Sherdley Park Drive, Sandringham Drive, Sutton Park Drive, Marina Avenue. The Shires, Cheshire Gardens & Yorkshire Gardens. This award is designed to give schools the opportunity to raise the profile of modern foreign language learning and to embed good teaching and learning in the curriculum. An example of these strengths to meet the criteria of making language fun and interesting was introducing pupils to superheroes, unicorns and dragons in Spanish – as well as including Spanish books in World Book Day activities and having a good old Spanish sing along during assemblies.
Please email your name, address, landline number and date of birth to sallyb@locallife247.co.uk
Praising Mrs Wilkinson for her ‘excelente’ work, Sutton Manor Primary School headteacher Monica Gladman said: “Alison’s commitment and enthusiasm for her job really is a breath of fresh air and this has helped our pupils grasp a basic understanding of the Spanish language from an early age which is a great advantage to have.

Out of this
world
Eccleston is celebrating the world of science fiction for a special anniversary. Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ was published in 1818, and is greatly regarded as being the first work of science fiction. To mark its 200th anniversary in 2018, the Smithy Heritage Centre on Kiln Lane, Eccleston, will be holding an exhibition until Saturday, September 22. While taking similar inspirations, H.G. Wells and
Jules Verne conjured other realms; imagining vehicles that could travel through time and space. And of course many technological advances have influenced literature, unlocking possibilities for authors, artists and filmmakers. The event will look at the impact science fiction has had on popular culture, and visitors are invited to attend and try to spot their favourite characters. Smithy Heritage Centre will also host Smithy Con on Saturday, June 9, and Sunday, June 10, 10am-5pm, where visitors can get dress up and join the fun.

Trolleybus
60
Niamh Ollerton celebrates an event that marks transport in the St Helens of yesteryear
F
rom double-decker trams to omnibuses, there were once so many different ways to get around Britain’s towns. But did you know that St Helens was once served by a trolleybus system – a trackless system powered by overhead electrical wires? The system, which proudly served St Helens for almost 30 years, closed on June 30 1958. A day later a ceremonial last run was held for civic dignitaries to Prescot and Rainhill - the last routes in the town. However exactly 60 years since its closure, the town’s last remaining trolleybus is making its way back for a weekend of events at the North West Museum of
Transport on Hall Street in St Helens on Saturday June 30 and Sunday, July 1. And if you’re ready for a trip down memory lane, then Trolleybus 60 won’t disappoint. Organiser Geoff Sandford said: “St Helens was a trolleybus town and I remember trolleybuses with affection. I arranged for the Trolleybus to come back to us as I have been involved with that vehicle for many years. “There are no trolleybuses in use in the UK now so we’re bringing them back to try and jog people’s memory. Over the weekend people can go on board the buses, it won’t be running but you can pop on.”
An early St Helens single deck trolleybus

Blackbrook Road in 1933 and the then whole trolleybus fleet lined up St Helens trolleybus was sold to Bradford City Transport in 1958 and last ran in 1971 when it was purchased for preservation by a bus enthusiast for ÂŁ140. The event will mark the closure of the St Helens trolleybus system 60 years ago with a weekend of events including exhibitions and vehicle displays, rides on restored ex-St Helens buses along the trolleybus routes.
Trolleybuses were decorated for several events in the town
The last surviving St Helens Trolleybus No 387 (BDJ 87) will return from Sandtoft and will be on display at the North West Museum of Road Transport, Hall Street, in its old depot which was once its former garage. Geoff said: “The only survivor is coming from the Trolley Bus Museum at Sandtoft, near Doncaster

30 which is a big operational museum. They have a collection of trolley buses – the largest selection in the world.” On Sunday July 1, there will also be many former St Helens diesel buses visiting the town to give free rides to the public on former St Helens trolleybus routes. Geoff continued: “We’re bringing as many preserved St Helens Motor Buses to the museum as we can.

has changed.”
“One is coming from York which hasn’t been here for many years. And hopefully one is coming up from south of England, which is being refurbished and if it’s ready it will be a big surprise.”
Geoff replies in jest: “Margaret hates them.
It’s safe to say an event of this calibre demonstrates that life moves on. Geoff said: “St Helens has changed so much. The trolleybus was the vehicle in the 1950s and the way people live now you see how much fashion
Robins Lane 1952 with a trolleybus passing under the bridges
And what does Geoff’s wife think about trolley buses?
“She used to come with me when we were courting. Before we got married she put up with it, but now she will not go to the trolleybus museum, I have to go on my own. It’s kept me out of trouble.” When asked how Geoff was feeling about the upcoming event, he said: “I’m apprehensive in case people don’t turn up.
31 “We actually had a meeting at the Heart of Glass in St Helens, and we’re organising a few vehicles for parade on the Sunday for the 150th anniversary celebrations.” But there’ll be a special trip made across the border for one of the buses as Geoff explains: “The farthest travelling St Helens motor bus is coming from Scotland which will be with us all weekend.
The old market and trolleybuses waiting for passengers
“I used to own that particular bus. It will make me and my family very nostalgic. Since it’s been in Scotland my grandkids have ridden it so it still has a family collection.
Trolleybus 60 will be held from 11am-3pm on both days. There will also be displays of trolleybus photos in the museum taken from many collections and covering every route in the town from 1927 to 1958.
“It’s a bus I am fond of. It was saved from going to the scrap yard and I had it for 11 years.”
The trolleybus will be on loan for at least two years and will be on view at weekends from 11am -3pm.

Health & Fitness
Save your
cervix
By Niamh Ollerton
H
earing about the big C is never pleasant. The disease comes in many different forms, and unfortunately men, women, and children of all ages are affected by it. The most common cancer in women aged 35 and under is cervical cancer, with more than 3,200 women being diagnosed every year in the UK, and nearly 900 die annually. BBC News reported a charity found: “embarrassment makes women avoid smear tests.” The report came after a survey of more than 2,000 women in the UK by the charity Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust found half of whom either delayed or didn’t attend their screening. All women aged 25 to 49 are invited for a screening test every 3 years, while those aged 50 to 64 are invited every 5 years. But 1 in 4 women skip the cervical screening, with the proportion increasing to 1 in 3 among those aged 25 to 29 and to 1 in 2 in some more deprived regions of the UK. The survey found that embarrassment about body shape for between a third and a half of women held them back from attending their smear test. This also highlighted a lack of understanding about the importance of screening, with a quarter saying they didn’t think they needed to go because they were healthy and more than a third believing screening doesn’t reduce your cancer risk.

34 But to show the importance of this imperative service, the charity Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust will be running its Cervical Screening Awareness Week from Monday, June 11-Sunday, June 17. And there are lots of ways we can get involved too! You can order the charity’s information materials to create an awareness stall at your surgery, workplace or sports centre or even put up a couple of posters; organise your own fundraising event to help raise necessary funds for the charity to continue their work; or tell your story to help spread the word about cervical cancer and prevention. In 99.7% of cases, cervical cancers are caused by

persistent infections with a virus called high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a very common virus transmitted through skin to skin contact in the genital area. Around four out of five sexually active adults (80%) will be infected with some type of HPV in their lives. However, for the majority of women this will not result in cervical cancer. While HPV infection is common, cervical cancer is rare. Cervical cancer forms in the cells that line the cervix, which is the lower, narrow part of the uterus (womb) which joins to the top end of the vagina. Cervical cancer may not have symptoms in its early stages, but it can be prevented through regular cervical screening (smear test) (a procedure in which a sample of cells are taken from the cervix and examined for abnormalities under a microscope or tested for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), depending on where in the UK you live). There are some recognised symptoms associated with cervical cancer that you should be aware of. These include: Abnormal bleeding: during or after sexual intercourse, or between periods; post-menopausal bleeding: if you are not on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or have stopped it for six weeks or
35 more; unusual vaginal discharge; discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse; lower back pain. Almost all cases of cervical cancer (99.7%) are caused by infections with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a very common infection that four out of five sexually active adults will come into contact with in their lives. Most women will clear high-risk HPV infections themselves without it causing any harm. However, in a small number of women it can remain ‘dormant’ (inactive) or persistent, sometimes for many years. In these cases high-risk HPV can cause cervical abnormalities (changes to the cells of the cervix) to develop, which, if left untreated, can develop into cervical cancer over time.
There are usually no symptoms associated with high-risk HPV infections, which means it is very important to attend your regular cervical screening (smear test) when you are invited, so that any abnormalities in the cells of the cervix can be detected and treated before they get a chance to develop into cervical cancer. If cervical cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, it’s usually possible to treat it using surgery. In some cases, it’s possible to leave the womb in place, but it may need to be removed via a hysterectomy, or radiotherapy, or a combination of the two. Food & Drink
A very British
F
addiction
orget cigarettes, alcohol and even drugs, there is a new addiction sweeping the nation - snackoholism. We were brought up being told not to eat between meals but now it seems that we literally can’t help helping ourselves, with four percent of Brits admitting to being addicted to snacking and finding it impossible to quit. A survey by Diet Chef has uncovered some shocking truths about British snacking behaviour - not least that more than one in 10 of us would rather snack than have sex. And it seems our need to snack is taking over our lives as six per cent of us even admit to snacking in bed. A third of us would rather give up alcohol than snacks and 13% of smokers said they’d rather kick their nicotine habit than give up chocolate, biscuits and crisps. As a nation, the number of snacks we are consuming has reached colossal proportions. Our snack of choice is crisps - 61% of Brits admit to eating at least one packet a day and some scoff as many as five or six. This equates to a staggering 48 million packets of crisps being consumed every day by the UK’s adult population. Add to this 45 million chocolate bars and the 78 million biscuits and cakes we eat every day and it is no wonder we have an obesity crisis. One in 10 of the people surveyed have either a burger, a pizza or a portion of chips as a snack every day, showing we no longer understand the difference between a snack and a meal. Yet only 14% of the people surveyed knew how many calories something as basic as a portion of chips contained. Diet Chef’s nutritionist Caron Leckie says: “Our survey shows the extent to which snacking has got out of control. Most of the people we surveyed said they
snack out of habit or boredom, which shows people are eating without thinking, not out of necessity. “It can be difficult to curb or change snacking habits as there are many different components involved - sometimes we snack out of hunger, boredom, cravings or just pure habit. Identifying our snacking ways and preparing ourselves is the first step to snacking success.” Caron’s advice to avoiding snacking: * Identify what - Keeping a food diary can help. * Identify where - consider where you are most likely to snack - then clear out your snack stash. * Identify when - Knowing when you snack can reveal the trigger.. * Find a healthier alternative. * Distract yourself - Occupy your mind with other things - go for a walk, phone a friend, get busy cleaning etc to get your mind off those treats. * Avoid tricky situations - Take a packed lunch to work to avoid the temptation of shops, and cut back on tea or coffee if you usually have biscuits too. * Cut the portions - You can make anything instantly healthier by cutting the portions. * If you feel yourself reaching for a snack, make it fruits or vegetables instead. * Make small changes - If you deprive yourself of everything that you like and that is habitual, it’s much harder, and is likely to end in a cycle of deprivation and bingeing. * Don’t forget drinks - Whether it’s a fizzy drink, orange juice or the mid-morning caramel latte - they add up, so choose a healthier alternative.

Raisin & Chocolate Ganache Meringues Meringues are a light but indulgent treat for any time of year and these chocolate versions are very decadent without taking too much time. Makes 30
Ingredients
Method
150g egg whites 300g sugar 300g milk chocolate 150g double cream 5g vanilla essence 120g raisins 100g melted chocolate to coat the base of the meringue
Heat the oven to 125°C. Whisk the egg white to a stiff snow. Add 200g of sugar whilst still whisking - until the meringue is very stiff. Stir in the remaining 100g of sugar. Place the mixture in a piping bag and pipe out 30 meringues before placing in the oven for approx. 30 mins (with the door slightly open to allow moisture to escape) then turn oven off and leave the meringues inside. Once dry and light brown in colour take them out of the oven and allow to cool. To make the ganache, heat the cream and vanilla to 72°C and hold for two minutes before adding the milk chocolate and mixing well. Add the raisins and allow to cool. Take a meringue and brush the base with melted chocolate. Once the chocolate has set, pipe a disc of ganache on to the meringue and place another on top to form a sandwich and then repeat until done.

Tuna Burgers Tuna is a great staple and part of a healthy diet, so this twist on the traditional burger makes it a great way to integrate more oily fish into a family diet. Serves 4
Ingredients
Method
1 (170g) can tuna, drained
Combine tuna, egg, bread crumbs, onion, celery, red pepper, mayonnaise, chili sauce, dill, salt, pepper, hot pepper sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well.
1 egg 60g Italian seasoned bread crumbs 55g minced onion
Shape carefully into 4 burgers as the mixture will be very soft. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to make the patties easier to handle, if desired.
35g minced red pepper
Coat a non-stick frying pan with cooking spray. Fry tuna burgers for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until cooked through. As they are fragile, be careful when turning them.
60ml mayonnaise
Serve on buns with onion slices and lettuce leaves, if desired.
30g minced celery
15g chili sauce 0.5g dried dill 2g salt 0.3g ground black pepper 1 dash hot pepper sauce 1 dash Worcestershire sauce 4 hamburger buns 1 red onion, sliced 4 leaves of lettuce (optional)

Jaguar
E-Pace
T
he E-Pace is diminutive when compared with the F-Pace, and it doesn’t look much like it. It has more in common with the Range Rover Evoque, because it uses the same chassis. There are other Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) models rolled into the mix, too. The new SUV’s headlights are reminiscent of the two-seater Jaguar F-Type, possibly hinting at the athletic potential of the E-Pace. There are two petrols and three diesels on offer. I drove the most potent diesel, the D240 twinturbo. As the numbers in its name suggest, the SUV churns out 240PS, and it’s fitted with an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive only. There are a couple of model line-ups: regular and R-Dynamic; the latter of which gets twin tailpipes, front fog-lights and body-coloured door cladding. Then there are four trim levels within each range. I drove the ‘S’ trim in R-Dynamic form, which boasts

fat alloys, navigation, electrically-adjustable front seats and leather upholstery. Behind the wheel, the E-Pace isn’t mind-blowing, but it’s very good - as far as small SUVs go. The car’s steering weights up well at speed and the baby Jaguar feels planted, inspiring some confidence in corners. Zero to 62mph is achieved in 7.4 seconds and the top speed is 139mph. Unsurprisingly, I found myself enjoying lacing the E-Pace down Corsican roads; perhaps even more so than if I’d been at the tiller of a German-made machine. The jewel in the E-Pace’s crown is undoubtedly its ride quality. The car feels refined on every road surface, behaving better than an SUV has any entitlement to, even at a snail’s pace. Potholes are soaked up so well that there are times when you wonder if the Jaguar has metamorphized into a hovercraft.
45 The D240 produces just a smidgeon of diesel clatter on start-up, but it soon settles. Give it the beans with your right foot, though, and the oil-burning musical score returns. To be fair, the car’s sound insulation masks this most of the time, to the point where you start to question which fuel type the Jaguar drinks. The E-Pace’s ZF nine-speed automatic ‘box changes smoothly, and on the R-Dynamic, gearshift paddles make things more fun. Rather than staying in ‘auto’ mode, you can dance through the cogs yourself using the shifters behind the steering wheel. The cabin is a lovely place to spend time. It’s even grin-inducing at times, with neat touches, like the ‘cub’ image in the windscreen frame helping to raise a smile. The general effect is elegant enough, with skilfully placed sections of leather and double stitching to remind you you’re in a quality motor.

positively van-like with the rear seats folded down. In place of human cargo, there’s 1,234 litres. JLR has every right to look like ‘the cat that got the cream’ with this fresh product. The E-Pace will be popular, no doubt about it. It has a near-flawless mix of comfort, practicality, power and refinement.
Room-wise, you’re laughing in an E-Pace. The car will sit four-up, no problem, and tall occupants in the back seat won’t have cause to moan about legroom or headroom. There’s plenty of that. The practical side of things continues to the Jaguar’s boot. At 577 litres, it offers more cargo capacity than most other small SUVs. And things become
