Trailblazer Lily Hands up if you’ve enjoyed watching the Women’s World Cup on TV… Watching football without the huge egos, awful attitudes and indulgent posturing that go hand in hand with the so-called superstars of the Premier League makes for a refreshing change, and as I write this, the England team are through to the group stages. Go lionesses! Women’s football in the UK is just over a hundred years old, and surprisingly enough for a town that’s devoted to the egg-shaped ball game in both codes, the town of St Helens and one of its residents in particular played a big part in its early days. As women’s football gathered momentum back in the early 1900s, St Helens Ladies were once the second best football team in the country, second to only Dick, Kerr Ladies from Preston. Crowds of 30,000-40,000 were commonplace and one 1920 match at Goodison Park between these teams attracted a 53,000 crowd with a reputed 14,000 others locked out. The undoubted superstar of the time was St Helens born and bred Lily Parr. Though she chose to play for Dick, Kerr Ladies rather than her home town team, Lily scored 43 goals in her first season as a 14 year old! Lily went on to score over 908 goals in her career and was the first female player to be inducted into the FA’s hall of fame. A true trailblazer, Lily died of cancer in 1973 and is buried in St Helens Cemetery, but fingers crossed the spirit of Lily Parr can urge the England team on to success and that the whole of women’s football benefits as a result. Have a great summer…

Garswood School Battles Dementia Pupils at Garswood Primary School have been getting involved with raising awareness of dementia. Children from the school visited a dementia café at St. Andrew’s Mission Hall throughout the academic year, working alongside the local community with activities like bingo, art and flower arranging. Inspired by the people they met, the students quickly realised some fundraising was in order, and set about organising a 7.1 mile sponsored walk to Carr Mill Dam, planting forget-me-not seeds along the way. Pupils also held a bake sale fundraiser, in total managing to raise over £600. Proceeds will be split between the Garswood-based dementia café
and the Alzheimer’s Society to help the estimated 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK alone.

For the mayonnaise, mix the egg yolks, mustard and vinegar together in a bowl until well combined. Slowly add in the olive oil until the mixture thickens and then whisk in the cream. Add 150ml of the reserved tomato stock to the bowl. Pour the contents of the bowl into a saucepan over a low heat, whisk continuously until heated through. Allow to gently simmer. Add the mackerel fillets, skin-side down, add the bacon back to pan and cook for one minute. Add the cherry tomatoes, drizzle with a little oil and a sprinkle with salt, cook for a further three to four minutes. Remove the mackerel and tomatoes from the pan and set aside. Record-Breaking
Rock
Rock Choir is heading to the Theatre Royal this month – and with several Guinness World Records under their belt, you won’t want to miss this breathtaking performance! Rock Choir – often dubbed ‘The People’s Choir’ invites members of the local community to come together and sing, whether vocally trained or not. You don’t need to be able to read music, and no auditions are necessary. Better yet, the choir has broken not one but three Guinness World Records, including ‘the largest song and dance routine held at multiple locations’ which saw 7,914 members congregate across the UK to help raise over £10,000 for the charity Refuge. Impressively, the initiative has helped raise millions for charity, including the official charity Nordoff Robbins which uses music therapy to help people facing a range of conditions including dementia,
autism, and brain injury. For vocalists, it offers numerous health benefits and can help boost selfesteem and confidence. Now members of four Rock Choirs in St. Helens, Wigan, Chorley and Preston are coming together for a night of fabulous entertainment on Sunday, July 21 at 7pm. A show chock full of solo and group performances, dancing and a live band promises to delight audiences young and old – and perhaps inspire you to join a local branch! Tickets cost £11 and can be obtained from the Theatre Royal box office on 01744 756000 or at www. sthelenstheatreroyal.com If you’d like to get involved with Rock Choir, the St. Helens branch meets from 7pm-8:30pm every Wednesday at The World of Glass. Pride Power St. Helens will host its inaugural Pride festival this August. A joint project between MD Productions and The World of Glass, the event will bring some muchdeserved recognition to various LGBTQA+ groups in the local area, promoting acceptance, integration and, most importantly, pride! World of Glass chief executive and St. Helens-born Ron Helsby, who is helping to organise the event, never imagined seeing Pride come to the town when he came out as gay in 1992. ‘I couldn’t be happier,’ Ron explained. ‘We welcome everybody to the World of Glass – it’s a safe place here.’ Representatives from St. Helens Mind, the National LGBT Police Network and St. Helens Council came together for a launch event held at the World
of Glass in June to brainstorm ideas. Planned for Saturday, August 10, the event will feature information stalls, live performances and a Rainbow Wall of people joining hands from the town centre to The World of Glass.

10 Years of Table
Tennis
Rainford Table Tennis Club is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month. Established by Geoff Pye in 2009 after he was rejected by various other local clubs, Rainford’s group had an original membership of just eight, who split off into two teams to play in the Wigan & District League. Now going strong with over sixty members across eight teams, the club has only gone from strength to strength. ‘When I first started out playing table tennis, none of the clubs I visited really wanted to know me,’ Geoff explained. ‘That’s what’s different about Rainford Table Tennis Club – we’re all on equal footing here, and we welcome everyone, no matter age or ability, and pride ourselves on being friendly!’ The club offers the opportunity to keep fit while competing in a great team, and has just launched
its own ladies section. The club competes in the local league from September-April, and out of season runs practice sessions out of Rainford Scout Hut – often accompanied by a quick pint afterwards! They’re now the biggest adult table tennis club in Wigan and St. Helens, and expect around 90 people to attend their 10th anniversary party this July. The party invites members old and new to celebrate a decade of the sport in Rainford, and will take place at Rainford Labour Club on Friday, July 26 at 7:30pm. Attendees can expect a buffet and speeches from key members of the club to thank them for a fabulous ten years. For more information about the club, visit Rainford Table Tennis Club on Facebook.

The Perfect Kids love to splash in a pool on a hot summer’s day. If you are thinking of buying one, we have some top tips. Inflatable pools - These are easily inflated so can be up and filled as soon as the sunshine appears. Smaller inflatable pools are ideal for toddlers and can be inflated by one person with a good set of lungs, but larger pools can accommodate the whole family - you will probably prefer to inflate these with a pump! Quick up pools - These are super-easy to set up. Spread the pool out and inflate the top ring. The design of the pool means that as you fill it with water the sides of the pool will rise up. These are
Pool
particularly good if storage space is tight. Frame pools - Sturdier pools with a bigger bathing area. Frame pools are ideal for larger families and groups of teens. Look for rust-resistant galvanised metal frames; heavy-duty PVC and polyester 3-ply walls; beams and joints that pin or snap together for fast, easy construction. A filter pump to keep the water clean, and a repair patch kit to mend small tears or punctures. Site your pool on a level surface, with plenty of room to make it easy and safe to get in and out. Remember, toddlers and young children should be supervised at all times. By Sarah Davey

Football
Phenomenon By Jess Phillips
Though we’re approaching the end of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, one thing has looked pretty clear throughout: 2019 has been a standout year for women’s football. With big brands backing advertising campaigns and a record-breaking UK TV viewing figure of 6.1 million for England’s opening match against Scotland, it seems like women’s soccer is finally getting the recognition it deserves. And the icing on the cake? The unveiling of St. Helens-born Lily Parr’s statue at the National Football Museum in June. It’s been far from plain sailing. Women’s football has
long faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Since the first ever international women’s match took place between the Preston-based Dick, Kerr Ladies and a French XI in 1920, attracting an audience of 25,000 people, women have been repeatedly banned from the game. Despite a match between Dick, Kerr Ladies and St. Helens Ladies played at Goodison Park drawing a crowd of 53,000 people – and an additional 14,000 of whom were locked outside due to spatial constraints – the FA banned all women from playing on Football League grounds in 1921. Their reasoning? ‘The game of football is quite

27 unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged’. Though this ban was eventually lifted, it didn’t happen until fifty years later. Lily Parr was one of the women on the Dick, Kerr team who helped bring them to a 4-0 victory at what remains the most well attended women’s football game in history. Born in Gerard’s Bridge in St. Helens and growing up playing football against her brothers, Parr worked at a munitions factory during World War I which went on to form its own women’s football team to boost morale. Aged just fourteen, Lily Parr scored 43 goals in her first season alone. Parr went on to play for the St. Helens Ladies Team before eventually being recruited for the Dick, Kerr Ladies, the majority of whom were factory workers at Dick, Kerr and Co. in Preston. 6 foot tall and routinely labelled as ‘larger than life’, Parr was a chain-smoker of Woodbine cigarettes who enjoyed playing practical jokes on teammates. She was well known for ‘borrowing’ balls after games and selling them on for a profit! Lily Parr played left-wing against both male and female teams, and was reported to have one of the strongest left-footed kicks in football. Over the course of her career she scored nearly 1,000 goals. Lily wasn’t the only female footballer to come out of St. Helens. Alice Woods was first and foremost an athlete, born in Sutton in 1899 to a family of colliers. Woods was the first woman to win a race under Amateur Athletic Association of England laws, and could allegedly run a hundred yards in twelve seconds. She joined Dick, Kerr Ladies in 1920 as a midfielder, going with them on a tour of France ahead of the FA ban a year later. The ban, which came about in response to fears that the men’s game would be overshadowed as most were just returning from war, meant Dick,
Team captains kiss at a USA match Kerr Ladies had to head off to the USA and Canada for their next tour. Despite being unable to play against Canadian teams under a similar ban from the Dominion Football Association, Lily and Alice were still determined to play the game they excelled at, and proved tough opponents for American teams. Lily Parr died in 1978, aged 73. Alice Woods passed away thirteen years later in 1991, aged 92. It is only now, in 2019, that Lily Parr has received so much recognition posthumously. The unveiling of her statue comes as part of the #SupportHer initiative at the Manchester-based National Football Museum to increase representation of female footballers to 50%. It will also host various activities celebrating women’s achievements in soccer throughout 2019.

Island Hopping
Adventure By Jess Phillips
Offering a distinctive culture, natural wonders and a vast number of stunning geological phenomena, the Shetland and Orkney Islands are rather unique. More Scandinavian than British, these islands located off Scotland’s north coast are wonderfully secluded, surrounded by crystal-clear waters. From wildlife watching and outdoor adventures like diving and cliff walking, to visiting historic sights and far-flung islands, Shetland and the Orkney Islands have plenty on offer for people of all ages and interests. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the much coveted and undoubtedly awe-inspiring Northern Lights.
Did you know that in the summer months, these islands can enjoy almost 19 hours of sunshine a day? As they’re so far north, they have a ‘simmer dim’, when the sun only dips below the northern horizon for a few hours.
Shetland At any time of year you’ll be enchanted by ruggedly handsome Shetland. In fact, it was the only place in the UK to make Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Summer Destinations in Europe list! The archipelago has more than 100 islands with just 15 inhabited, making it the ideal destination to escape the

Other fascinating sights include the Bishop’s and Earl’s palaces and Orkney Museum. It boasts a wide choice of restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy Orkney’s excellent food and drink including its famed local beef, lamb, salmon and shellfish, as well as a multitude of other locally produced delights.

Oh I Do Like To Be Beside
The Seaside By Jess Phillips
St. Helens has always been a town of relentless industry. From the glass factories of Pilks to the numerous collieries scattered about the borough, labourers of the last century hardly got a minute to rest. While the neighbouring towns of Wigan and Chorley shut up shop to enjoy a wellearned fortnight by the sea during Wakes Weeks, production in St. Helens was a lot more difficult to halt - so St. Heleners had to take holidays where they could get ‘em. It was always worth it though. Whether you were embarking on a coach holiday with friends and neighbours, going along on a work-organised day trip or setting off in the family motorcar to enjoy standard seaside fare, the beaches of Blackpool, Southport and Rhyl were calling. From traditional donkey rides on the sand to penny slots and bingo games, the seaside holiday offered a chance to relax away from the grit and grime of factories and mines. Many will remember the quintessentially British ‘Jugs of Tea for the Sands’ sign – a surer reminder than the Tower that you’d arrived in Blackpool! And
it meant what it said: you never had to be afraid of running out of hot tea; you just had to fill your flasks to take onto the beach with you. If you were lucky, you might be heading off to stay in one of the popular holiday camps at your resort of choice. The ever-popular Pontins – whose Blackpool site closed its doors for good in 2009 and Butlins - with sites in Skegness and Pwllheli in Wales – attracted keen holidaymakers throughout the last century, hosting the classically bizarre ‘knobbly knees’ and ‘bonny babies’ contests. Some resorts even set up cardboard cut-outs of the slim,
36 much-coveted Marilyn Monroe figure to see if women were slim enough to fit inside – more than a bit risqué today. The chalets of Pontins and Butlins would be packed to bursting, with Bluecoats and Redcoats doing their best to stay on top of jam-packed entertainment schedules. Usually centred around an iconic boating lake, chalets were arranged in a Panopticon-like structure (make of that what you will) where ‘a rainy day simply produces more striking evidence of how well a summer holiday programme can function indoors!’. Or so declares the Southport Pontins brochure in 1972, anyway. And if that programme proved disappointing, not to worry. There was always plenty to do outside of the camps too. Blackpool was prolific for hosting comedy performances from the likes of Ken Dodd and Jimmy Clitheroe (A.K.A. The Clitheroe Kid) as well as musical guests like Cilla Black and The Beatles. Couples could head to the Winter Gardens or Tower Ballroom for an intimate waltz, while any superstitious folk could get their fortunes read along the Golden Mile. That’s without mentioning the iconic Blackpool Tower Circus and menagerie! Southport had its own fair share of memories, of course. Peter Pan’s Pool & Playground opened to the public in 1930, on the site where Ocean Plaza stands today. Boasting tall slides, flying aeroplanes, a Helter Skelter and a model railway, the playground was a
great base for families wanting to keep the kids entertained. Day trips on the sharry were offered to the playground, with a stop off at the pub on the way home for crisps and a pint – and, of course, a hearty singalong. Many families opted to visit the nearby boating lake for a trip on the steamer or rowboats, or pop across to Southport’s very own lido – perhaps a tad colder than the popular paddling pool over at Rhyl! Peter Pan’s Playground eventually changed its name to Happiland in the early 1970s ahead of its closure and demolition in 1989. Of course, if you were hankering for something a bit more thrilling, the larger amusement parks offered a bit more bang for your buck. Both Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Southport Pleasureland were operated by the same company, and in their heyday both offered a mix of classic British rides. A fan favourite,
37 the humble funhouse probably wouldn’t win any health and safety awards nowadays, but many an hour could be whiled away on the Social Mixer – dubbed the ‘wheel of death’ - which would fling riders out to the sides as they struggled to remain centred! Blackpool’s funhouse burned down in 1991 and was replaced by white-knuckle water ride Valhalla. In the late 1970’s holidaymakers tastes moved on to package holidays in sunnier and warmer climes just a short few hours away by plane. Trips on the charabanc have all but faded into obscurity, replaced by budget flights to Benidorm and Ibiza.
One thing’s for sure, though – we’ll always have the golden memories of the British seaside in its heyday.

Exercising during
pregnancy
By Abi Jackson
Beyonce and Amal Clooney are expecting twins, Olympic cyclist Laura Trott just announced she’s pregnant, while Amanda Seyfried, Natalie Portman and a string of other celebs - not to mention millions of non-A-list women out there - are sporting blooming bumps. While not all of their announcements may have made the headlines, their news was no doubt cause for much joy for their own family and friends. And whether or not you have the budget for personal trainers and 5-star gyms, keeping well is a priority everybody deserves to honour. But exercising during pregnancy is a subject that throws up a lot of confusion, across the board.
Is this safe? “There certainly is a good deal of confusion surrounding what’s safe and what’s not safe exercise-wise in pregnancy. There’s a tendency for everyone to voice their views, especially when celebrities share their workouts on social media suddenly the whole world has an opinion. It’s almost as if when people fall pregnant, they become public property, others consider it their right to advise and even criticise,” says pregnancy and postnatal fitness expert Dr Joanna Helcke, the brains behind the award-winning FitBumpBox and FitBumpBall exercise and wellness packages for mums-to-be (www.joannahelcke.com). “Although this is usually well intentioned, the net effect is many women feel unsure as to what exercise can be done and what should be avoided.” It’s a subject being highlighted in the reboot of Sport England’s hugely successful ThisGirlCan campaign. You may already have spotted some of the new posters, featuring women like Franny,
who’s still enjoying riding her bike despite carrying twins, and Stephanie, whose baby doubles up as a dumb-bell in her postnatal fitness class. “We know there can be confusion about being active during pregnancy, and sadly, some examples of women being criticised for remaining active whilst pregnant. We want to show the normalness of being active during pregnancy,” explains Kate Dale, Sport England’s head of brand and digital strategy.
What women want Research ahead of the campaign relaunch found 80% of pregnant women would like to be more active. However, 13% had been questioned or received negative comments for doing exercise, and 34% confessed they were worried that being active could harm their baby.
41 Pip Black and Joan Murphy, co-founders of ‘fitness destination’ Frame, have just launched a new online platform for their ‘Mumhood’ classes, which feature yoga, Pilates and barre classes for different pre and post-natal stages (www.mum-hood.com). “Mumhood was born out of the fact that when Joan, and then I, became pregnant for the first time, even working in the industry, we found it really hard and at times very confusing to find information about exercising during pregnancy that didn’t contradict itself, or err on the side of caution. As people who were used to being active and needed to be to keep us sane, we started to do a lot of research ourselves into the risks and what type of exercises were safe, and which also would benefit you in terms of preventing pregnancy-related aches and pains, helping with the birth and with post-natal recovery.”
are also long-term health concerns that might flareup or affect somebody’s needs or limits in terms of physical activity during pregnancy.
It’s personal
The Royal College of Midwives’ official advice is clear: it is important to keep physically active during pregnancy - and this is the over-arching message.
Pregnancy - as with most things - does not affect every woman in the same way. Sometimes there
But that doesn’t mean heaping a ton of pressure on pregnant women to make sure they meet some
42 pre-determined fitness target, and neither should those who are able to be pretty active get criticised. The guidelines also note that everybody consults with a healthcare professional for individualised advice, and also that their activity and fitness levels before pregnancy be taken into account. “Every woman brings to pregnancy her own individual fitness levels, so what might be right for one person could well be entirely inappropriate for another. We don’t all think we should be emulating the Rebecca Adlingtons or Jessica Ennis-Hills of this world they’re top performing athletes - so why should we feel compelled to exercise like the latest celebrity who shares a video of her workout? Her workout will, in all likelihood, have been tailored specifically for her body, fitness and the way her pregnancy’s progressing,” says Dr Helcke. “The key is to ensure you’re not throwing new stuff at your body, and that you’re working at a level that is moderate by ‘your’ standards.” The Royal College of Midwives’ advice for women who weren’t regularly active before pregnancy is to chat with their GP or midwife, and then ideally aim to begin exercising for 15-minute bouts or less, three times a week, increasing gradually to daily 30-minute sessions. “Whilst ‘listening to your body’ may sound rather corny or a little unscientific, it is absolutely essential when it comes to keeping exercise safe during pregnancy,” says Dr Helcke. “Women should be on the lookout for telltale signs such as feeling more fatigued than usual and taking longer to recover from a workout. Never attempt to work through these signs - they’re our body’s way of telling us to ease off. If this means working out less intensively, for a shorter period, or even moving to a more gentle form of fitness, then so be it.”
9 TOP TIPS Hugh Hanley, father-of-two and national personal training manager at Virgin Active (www.virginactive. co.uk) offers these tips for starters... • Before you begin, talk to your doctor. They should be able to give advice specific to you. • Drink plenty of fluids, before, during and after any exercise, and avoid overheating. Be sure to always warm-up and cool down. • Wear loose fitting clothing, and comfortable nonslip supportive shoes. • Keep your heart rate under 140 beats per minute. • Past the first trimester, avoid exercising flat on your back - the weight of your uterus reduces the blood and oxygen flow to your baby. • During aerobic exercise, you will find you have less oxygen available, so lower the intensity of your normal routine. • Your metabolism speeds up during pregnancy, so remember to eat a well-balanced diet. • Your body produces a hormone called relaxin during pregnancy. This hormone softens joints and ligaments to make the birth process easier, so be careful not to overextend joints that may result in injury. • Do pelvic floor exercises every day and you’ll help keep your back and spine strong, and alleviate problems with bladder and bowel control that are common after childbirth.

Salt Trail by Chris Pearce
This month’s Jack’s Tracks visits Northwich, a place that today fits nicely into the pigeon-hole of genteel and leafy Cheshire, but it wasn’t always this way. Back in 1670, the Smith-Barry family of Marbury Hall were searching their land for evidence of coal which they could extract for commercial gain, but instead discovered huge resources of rock salt, a remnant from the Triassic period when seawater moved inland, creating shallow salt marshes. By the 1830’s, the salt mining industry in Northwich had ceased and the industry moved to nearby Winsford, leaving behind a mass of industrial wasteland and collapsed pits. This easy four-mile walk demonstrates the amazing ability of Mother Nature to renew even the most scarred of landscapes. Follow the brown signs to the Anderton Boat Lift (CW9 6FW) and park up in the pay and display car park. Take the path leading off from the centre of the car park, directly across from the pay machine. Go through the pretty butterfly barriers and then bear immediate left. At the next fork bear right and, just after the stone artwork a little further on, bear right once more and go past the wooden gate, heading downhill through a wooden area.
At the next fork, bear left towards Hyden Pool, and once you get past the next information board, you can take either fork to end up at a wooden bridge. Cross the bridge and carry on in the same direction until you arrive at another bridge by reed beds, cross here and, once again, go in the same direction.

46 Once you go through the steel gate at the end of the path, take the path on the left. Follow this path for approximately 200 yards, take the foot bridge on the right and you’ll eventually end up on the road, where you’ll arrive, 300 yards later, at the Salt Lion Works. You can walk through the Salt Lion Works to get to the Trent and Mersey Canal and then turn left down the towpath. Follow the towpath for almost two miles, past tranquil Cheshire countryside and an attractive marina, passing the coffee boat and the fudge boat en-route, until you reach the Anderton Boat Lift and its car park from where you started the walk. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/places-to-visit/ anderton-boat-lift-visitor-centre http://lionsaltworks.westcheshiremuseums.co.uk/
After 750 yards on this path, which runs parallel to Witton Brook, you’ll arrive at the eastern entrance to Anderton Nature Park; turn right towards Marbury Park and a few yards later when you arrive on a single track road (Marbury Road), turn right and follow the road for almost 700 yards until you arrive at a collection of steel and wooden gates on your left. Aim for the path that represents a 90 degree left turn from the road, so go through the gates and pick up this path. Follow this path for a further 700 yards, but whilst you’re on this path do take the chance to check out the bird hide.
For those with the OS Maps app on your desktop, mobile or tablet, this walk is named: JT-Salt-Trail

Nissan Qashqai 1.3 DiG-T
The Nissan Qashqai has been around for 11 years, and it is still a hugely popular model, ranking as Britain’s fourth most popular new motor. Only Volkswagen’s Golf, Vauxhall’s Corsa and Ford’s Fiesta fly out of dealerships more quickly. Back in 2007, consumers fell in love with the oddly named Qashqai’s blend of room, SUV styling and affordability. Since then, the Japanese automaker has kept the Qashqai name rocking – and the present incarnation of the car has been rolling off production lines since 2013. Nissan has not been resting on its laurels, though. It has been fine-tuning the Qashqai recipe over the years – and the latest tweaks aim to make it easieron-the-pocket to run, and better than ever to drive. Fresh to the Qashqai is a new infotainment unit, but
by Tim Barnes-Clay
the major news comes under the hood. The previous 1.6-litre and 1.2-litre petrol turbos have been kicked to the kerb with a 1.3 becoming the new kid in town. The new petrol turbo powerplant comes with a couple of outputs – 140ps and 160ps - and is the engine currently housed in Mercedes-Benz’s A200. The unit is also more efficient with an exhaust particulate filter helping it make the grade in the latest emissions testing processes. As mentioned, Nissan claims the 1.3 petrol turbo is cheaper to run too, as service intervals have leapt to 18,000 miles. They used to be 12,500 miles, so this is a significant increase. The car is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch auto ‘box, as tested for this review. It’s worth noting, though,
53
54 that the automatic is only offered with the 160ps unit. Behind the wheel, this new Qashqai variant feels smooth and quick enough, but it won’t set your heart racing. Zero to 62mph arrives in 9.9 seconds, and the top speed is 124mph. While the steering is light and precise, it’s not the best handling motor in its class. The cabin is the same as ever, and the infotainment unit looks identical. However, the software is brand new, resulting in fast loading times, and the screen responds far more quickly when you touch it. It will now identify swiping and pinching motions, and the home page can be personalised with apps and shortcuts. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come factory-fitted as standard on all bar the entry-level model. The infotainment system on the Qashqai Tekna+ 1.3 DiG-T DCT we drove is still not unflawed though. The display is too dim, and you can’t see much when the sun is on it because the seven-inch matt surface gives off a lot of glare. Mind you; it’s much better than the former system.
Nissan forecasts segment-leading residuals for the modern Qashqai, with many versions holding over 50 per cent of their value over three years. This means that finance deals are very reasonable right now. There are many reasons why the Qashqai’s popularity is so enduring. It is comfortable to drive and, with enough room for four or five adults, and a decent sized boot, it is a practical family car. The new infotainment system and petrol engines only strengthen the Qashqai’s name further, validating Nissan’s flexibility in the constantly-fluctuating automotive arena.

Gardening
Love your
lawn
by Angie Barker If you are looking to revamp your garden but don’t want to spend a fortune – a simple trick is to reshape your lawn. Your sward does not have to resemble a football pitch either to instantly look better with a new shape and the edges defined. It is amazing what a difference it can make to your garden space. First of all consider what shape would best suit your plot. A circular lawn makes a real statement and adds movement, drawing the eye. They are great for small gardens because they make the space feel larger. Curves are good for creating a calming feel in the garden and for dealing with slopes. Don’t be tempted though to make the curves too tight as they can make the garden look fussy – go for sweeping curves which will also be easier to mow. Straight lines can form bold geometric patterns which are more suited to a contemporary style but can look equally as good. Square stepping stones laid through turf can be a practical and eye catching way of navigating from one part of the garden to
another and children love them! If you have a wide but short plot, try shaping the lawn so that the grass gets narrower as it gets further away from the house. It creates the illusion that the garden is actually longer than it is – nifty! Consider installing a brick mowing edge to give further definition and to stop plants which outgrow their border space from spilling out over the lawn and killing off the grass. So give it a try – and if you have a spare corner in the garden somewhere, perhaps at the back of
57 a border, you can stack the turf you’ve removed and after a few months it will rot down and can be returned to the garden. As for my lawn – I’m a curvy kind of girl (Hubby chuckles to himself ) and have circles and curves which create a meandering feel to my little haven and give me more border space for planting. Yes, I have to admit it - I love my lawn.
