Archive Appeal

New Junction

Borough residents are being asked to record their experience of life in lockdown to share with future generations. The St Helens Archive Service has launched an appeal for residents to help document how life has been affected due to the pandemic.

Details on a £10m plan to make major improvements to the M6, in a move designed to underpin economic growth and reduce traffic jams, have been revealed. Plans have now been revealed for the northern arm of the A49 Lodge Lane to be re-routed away from junction 23 of the M6, to go through the new Haydock Point site to a new junction on the A580 East Lancs Road. The works are designed to reduce journey times, improve safety and underpin economic growth by supporting key sectors, keeping lorries moving and creating jobs.

There are many ways residents can contribute to the project, either by keeping a diary, creating a scrapbook, taking photographs or videos, writing songs, poems, drawings and more. The collected items will help to document this unique period in our lives for future generations to discover. Items that are chosen for preservation will be catalogued and stored as part of borough archive collections and possibly shared in future exhibitions. For more information about how you can get involved and contribute to the project, please visit www.sthelens.gov.uk/libraries/archive-service or call 01744 671748. Contributions can be submitted by email to archives@sthelens.gov.uk or delivered in person once it is announced it is safe to do so.

Wish to Close Local radio station Wish FM is to close in September. Owners Bauer Media has announced that 49 of its stations will be merged into nationwide station Greatest Hits Radio as part of a national re-brand. Wish has broadcasted to the Wigan and St Helens areas since 1997 and is broadcast from Orrell Lodge in Orrell, along with Tower FM and Wire FM, both of which will also be closed down as part of the re-branding. The changes mean that the Greatest Hits Radio Network is set to become the largest commercial radio network in the UK.

Liveable Streets St Helens Council is calling on residents, businesses and community groups to help identify ways of introducing enhanced spaces for people to walk and ride their bikes. The ‘St Helens Liveable Streets’ consultation runs until 31st August and the council has already received a good range of views on where cycling and walking facilities are needed the most. It’s easy to raise an issue - just put a pin on the map to raise issues and leave a suggestion on how active travel and social distancing can be achieved. Comments will help the council to secure emergency funding to deliver walking and cycling facilities, and support project delivery in the future. Rail Plan

Commissions Awarded

St Helens Council’s cabinet approved proposals to earmark more than £500,000 of match funding towards a proposed junction improvement scheme at Carr Mill which will help facilitate the new railway station.

The Arts in Libraries team at St Helens Cultural Hub have announced the recipients of this year’s artist

Should the Liverpool City Region be successful in applying for highways pinch pot funding, the £5.6m scheme would see a new traffic signalled controlled junction installed on Carr Mill Road at its junction with the East Lancs Road – as well as extending left and right turn lanes on A580 East Lancashire Road to improve journey times.

The nine successful projects are; It Is What It Is Productions crew, The Year of The Rat performance collective, Sarah Gilman, Kevin Crooks, Grace Collins, Fiona Stirling, Ian Brownbill, Emmer Winder and a performance troupe consisting of Ian Greenall, Andrew Dickinson, Jason Anders, Michaela Anders and Ian Ryan.

The scheme would support proposed regeneration activities in the area, including a new residential development and a railway station, that were outlined in metro mayor Steve Rotheram’s ‘Merseyrail for All’ plan.

The commissions will enable these artists, with support from the team and a fee attached, to make work which will be shared in the libraries across the borough.

commissions. There were sixteen applications in total, and nine of these were shortlisted to receive a total of £12,500 of funding.

75g caster sugar 3 large eggs 75g plain flour FOR THE TOPPING 135g pack pineapple or lemon jelly 200g full-fat soft cheese 1 tsp vanilla extract 25g caster sugar 150ml double cream, softly whipped 2 x 411g cans peach halves, drained TIP: You can use any canned or fresh fruit you like in place of the peaches. 2 To make the sponge base, place the sugar and eggs in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Using an electric handheld mixer, whisk for 3-4 mins until the mixture is pale and thick – it should leave a trail on the surface when the whisk is lifted. Remove the bowl from the heat. Sift over the flour and fold in with a metal spoon. 3 Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 12-14 mins until risen, golden and springy to the touch. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Grease a 23cm round springform cake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper. Gently press the sponge into the base of the tin. 4 To make the topping, make up the jelly following the pack instructions and leave in a cool place until cold and beginning to thicken and set. 5 Beat the soft cheese in a bowl with the vanilla extract and sugar until smooth. Fold in the whipped cream and spread evenly over the sponge base. Arrange the peach halves over the creamy layer then gently pour over the jelly. Chill for 3-4 hrs until set. Still Standing – 30 Years on For a business to survive and succeed for thirty years, the products, the prices and the service offered by that company needs to consistently out-perform local competitors. JC Kitchens & Bedrooms is such a company. Founded in 1990 by Jean Cutler, who was a Designer at Beamans in St Helens with her industrial chemist husband Allan, it’s still going thirty years later with Allan and Jean’s daughter Jo-Anne at the helm, ably assisted by husband John. JC Kitchens & Bedrooms now occupies impressive and spacious showrooms on Greenfield Road in St Helens comprising of two floors of inspirational kitchen and bedroom displays. Another vital ingredient of long-standing success is the calibre of the people running the business, and when the lockdown was announced, it would have been easy for the owners of such an established store to close its doors and potter around in the garden with the rest of us, and still be fairly confident that the business would recover when the time came to reopen. Instead Jo-Anne, along with son Alfie, spent every day for ten weeks volunteering at the Steve Prescott Foundation’s Essential Items project at the Eccleston Arms Bar & Grill alongside other volunteers including Johnny Vegas, Paul Sculthorpe and Lee Briers. So, it’s no wonder that JC Kitchens & Bedrooms enter their fourth decade of business with an outstanding reputation for inspiration, expertise and quality. Backed by excellent reviews and recommendations, JC Kitchens & Bedrooms have helped transform some of the finest homes in the country. If you’re looking for a new kitchen or bedroom do call into JC Kitchens & Bedrooms on Greenfield Road for inspiration and a warm, but socially distanced, welcome.

Dalton Circular

by Chris Pearce Distance: 7¼ miles Difficulty: Moderate

If it’s social distancing you want then this 7¼ mile Jack’s Tracks takes you to the quieter side of the Douglas Valley, away from the walking hotspots of Parbold and Fairy Glen, to the leafy lanes of Dalton and Roby Mill. The walk starts at Gathurst, near the railway station (WN6 8HZ), but parking can be tight, so you could start this walk at Lafford Lane or at Appley Bridge. Go under the low railway bridge to the Orrell side and you will see two gates on the right; take the right-hand gate and follow the path towards the motorway bridge. Go right under the bridge and follow the path when it bears a sharp left

For those with the OS Maps app on your desktop, mobile or tablet, this walk is named: JT-Dalton-Circular

21 and crosses a green metal bridge. Bear left and follow Dean Brook into Dean Wood, staying on the right-hand side of the brook for ½ mile until you reach the two bridges – one wood and one metal/ concrete. Stay to the right at this point and you will climb out of the wood via some steep slate steps. Once you are out of the woods turn left around the field and you will reach a wide dirt track called Whitley Road. Turn left and follow this track 1/3 mile to the junction with Lafford Lane. Turn right up the hill, go past Jollies ‘ith Dean and take the footpath Lee d

22 on the left-hand side. Follow the path up to Stoney Brow, turn left and cross the road. Go past the lodge and entrance gates to St Joseph’s and then take the next right.

Once on Farley Lane, you turn left and head uphill into Dalton. Once you arrive at a dog-leg bend take a right turn down a wide track towards the Grade 2 listed Stone Hall. Walk past the Hall and bear left.

Follow this single-track road uphill, and around 100 yards past the stone mews houses, take a right turn where the steel bar gate is, follow this path as it curves round to another steel bar gate. Go through the gate and follow this path for almost ¾ mile. Stay on the path, going in the same direction, as it narrows. Go through a small glade, then bear left and head towards the bungalow – the exit to Farley Lane is on the right-hand side.

Follow this path as it curves into Stone Hall Lane, which runs downhill parallel to Dingle Brook for almost a mile. Once you cross The Dingle using the stepping stones, carry on in the same direction until you reach Lees Lane, and then turn left. Follow Lees Lane past the scenic fishing lake on the right until you reach a footpath sign by Meadowbank Barn. Turn right and the footpath follows a stream for ¼ mile; once the path opens to fields on both sides, take the path that runs diagonally across the field on the right-hand side. This path exits out on the busy Appley Lane; turn left, cross the bridge over the Douglas and then cross over and take the canal towpath on the right before the canal bridge. Please take utmost care crossing the road at this point. Follow the canal for 1.8 miles and exit near the Blue Elephant at Gathurst. Turn right and the starting point of Gathurst Station is 100 yards away on the left. Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear whilst walking. Whilst every care has been taken to ensure that the walk is accurate, neither the publisher or its editorial contributors can accept, and hereby disclaim, any liability to any party to loss or damage caused by errors or omissions resulting from negligence, accident or other cause.

We take a look at the most exciting cars by class due to arrive this year…

Crossover

SUV

Ford Puma

Land Rover Defender

Once a two-door, Fiesta-based coupe, the Ford Puma has been reborn into a crossover - although it does remain Fiesta-based.

A stark departure from the classic Defender, Land Rover has ensured that this new model gets a hint of the character of the old car.

It packs some clever technology under its skin. Mild-hybrid powertrains feature in a bid to improve efficiency, while a ‘MegaBox’ compartment in the boot maximises practicality.

There will be a variety of specifications and wheelbase choices, as well as engines. There’s going to be a hybrid version too – so there’s an option for those people who want the cleanest version of the Defender available.

Convertible Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet For a crossoverturned- conver tible take a look at the Range Rover Evoque Convertible. This is the T-Roc Cabriolet, which takes the otherwise normal T-Roc and brings a soft-top experience to the car. It remains to be seen if it can carry over the impressive driving dynamics of the vehicle underpinning it.

Estate Skoda Superb iV It builds on the supremely practical Czech estate with a 1.4-litre petrol engine linked up to an 85kW motor, allowing for a claimed electric-only range of 34 miles. No official images of the estate have yet been released.

MPV Mercedes EQV Moving forward from the EQC SUV, the EQV is an electric van which is likely to be one of a number of electrified Mercedes vehicles due to arrive in 2020.

Pick-up Jeep Gladiator Essentially a fiveseater pick-up version of the Wrangler, it’s a real slice of Americana which is set to come to our roads. Though there’s been no official confirmation, it’s expected that the Gladiator will factor into Jeep’s European strategy during 2020.

powered vehicle a mainstream - the ID.3. The German hatch will come in a variety of powertrain configurations, the largest of which promises a range of 261 miles between charges.

Expect a range of petrol and diesel engines, and there’s a chance of a hybrid powertrain too although nothing has been confirmed as yet.

Hatchback

Luxury Car Mercedes-Maybach GLS Later in 2020, the M ercedes-M aybach GLS will arrive, boasting a plethora of high-end features and materials for the ultimate in comfort. Along with distinctive looks, it brings a powerful V8 engine, a 27-speaker audio setup and reclining rear seats among a plethora of other features to the GLS.

Van Volkswagen Caddy The Volkswagen Caddy is compact, easy to drive and extremely practical. Having been in production for many years, it’s now being replaced by an all-new version. Boasting more technology than before without forsaking any of the practicality and spaciousness, this latest version is likely to be just as popular.

Performance Car Audi RS6 The new RS6 is more powerful than before while being sharper and more engaging to drive. It’s no less practical, however, and it looks great.

Volkswagen Golf Mk8 The MK8 comes to market with a fresh new look and more interior tech. There’s a cleaner, more efficient range of engines, too. Expect a go-faster GTI to arrive in 2020 as well.
