W
hen British summertime gets into full swing, there’s a lot to appreciate on our isle. We usually have lush green landscapes, sparkling seas and lakes and with long summer evenings come endless possibilities. I for one am at my happiest when the days are warmer and we have a little sunshine, and for the most part, I think the people I pass when out on a walk share this heightened sense of happiness with me. The summer is the time to get outside whether that’s sitting in the garden, going for an adventure on our bikes, or even attending a festival. And the joy of attending a festival in Britain is come rain or shine we get stuck in and have a ball. Take Ruskin Beer Festival for example. The weekend of Friday, August 3, 5pm-11.30pm and Saturday, August 4, 5pm-11.30pm will feature real ales, ciders & world beers, prosecco and gin as well as live music and live sport. The festival is raising funds for St Helens Autism Support. Now I’m not saying we don’t deserve an evening or two relaxing catching up on our favourite TV shows, or binge-watching some brand new ones. But I hope you’ll join me in having an adventure in the great outdoors too, because summer only lasts a season after all. See you next time.

St Helens and Stuttgart celebrated its 70th twinning anniversary, and the celebrations were a huge success. The towns’ twinning dates back to 1948, making the partnership special as it was the first of its kind in Europe following WW2. As a leading manufacturer of glass, St Helens could support the rebuilding of parts of Stuttgart which had been destroyed or damaged by bombing during the war. More than 80 visitors from the German town visited St Helens, including the town’s Deputy Mayor, Dr Martin Schairer, along with councillors from the main political parties; Stuttgart University; two

high schools, the Leibniz Gymnasium and the Ferdinand-Porsche-Gymnasium and football team, TSV Uhlbach. They attended the International Food and Drink Festival as part of the borough’s 150th anniversary celebrations on Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 7, and also visited Cowley International College and a tree planting ceremony at Victoria Park. The group also visited the Dream, the World of Glass and with a nod to the World Cup, watch a friendly match between Stuttgart football team TSV Uhlbach and St Helens Town AFC. Real ale fans were able to discover the special beer, called Seibzig (meaning 70), which was created in a collaboration between Stuttgart brewery Dinkelacker and local brewers Connoisseur Ales. Deputy Mayor of Stuttgart, Dr Martin Schairer said: “I think for peace in Europe and understanding each other, the best way is that people meet together in the frame of the twinning-ship that we have done for 70 years. “It’s one of the first in Europe so the partnership between St Helens and Stuttgart is very important and very unique.”

As St Helens celebrates its 150th anniversary, we thought it necessary to commemorate local talent. Thank you to Local Life reader Eric J. Watkin who sent in this image of Grange Park Secondary Modern School’s soccer team. He said: “Grange Park was an outstanding rugby school. Beating the The Grind 5 took to the streets of St Helens for its fourth annual competition. On Sunday, July 8, 250 adults and 101 children took part in this year’s Grind 5 - which incorporated a 5 mile race/fun run and a kids 1k run - in support of the Isabella Rose Foundation. The foundation was formed in 2011 in memory of Isabella Rose Parr who was stillborn at 31 weeks old. This year’s event was run in collaboration with Violet-Grace’s Gift - set up in memory of Violet-Grace Youens who tragically died after being hit by a speeding car on Prescot Road in March 2017. In the men’s 5 mile race, Jon-Jo Doherty of Striders reigned supreme at 28.00 minutes, followed by Kane
grind Green with 28.24 and Anthony Lawler with 28.33. Kelly Hamilton bagged first female place once more with her time of 33.27, followed by Emma Callery in 35.41 and Lisa Cheers in 36.43. Winners Jon Jo and Kelly were awarded medals, trophies and £100 worth of sport vouchers courtesy from sponsors Qualitas Kitchens for winning for a second consecutive year. Chairman of the charity and team leader David Pope said: “It was a brilliant run. “The best bit for me is seeing the children take part in the 1 mile run, it was lovely to see my grandsons (Isabella-Rose’s brothers) take part. “I’m really proud of everyone who took part and congratulations to Jon Jo and Kelly.”

Success in Ruskin Drive recently hosted one of the North West’s biggest school sports festivals. The event, at the redeveloped Ruskin Drive sports complex saw over 500 pupils from over 30 schools across St Helens taking part. Weekend festivities kicked off on Friday, June 29 – coinciding with National School Sport Week – with the inaugural Year 6 Celebration Sports Festival. Sports included girls’ football, tag rugby, Boccia, Futsal and cricket. The event was delivered by the School Games
sport team as part of the wider St Helens Sports Festival organised by St Helens Council’s Sports Development team. Then on Saturday, June 30 and Sunday June 31, the excitement excelled as the annual sports festival got underway. Councillor Anthony Burns, St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Based and Focused Services, including leisure, said prior to the event: “For some pupils, this may be the first time that they have represented their school and could be the spark that ignites their interest in leading a healthy and active lifestyle. It’s a huge confidence booster too.”

Life’s a beach Summer has come to St Helens with the launch of the summer beach. A brave cycling team has completed an exhausting trek around Europe in honour of the Steve Prescott foundation.

The tiring 3,000-mile trek saw the squad of exrugby league stars, triathletes and ex-road cyclists battle high temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Cyclists battled from northern France, through Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, France again and into Spain before reaching the finish in Gibraltar. Completing the Race Across Europe in record time, the SPF said cyclists finished the mammoth task in six days, 19 hours and seven minutes, beating the previous record by two days. Steve’s brother Neil Prescott; former Saints winger Steve Hall; former rugby league players Gareth Ellis, Steve Hampson and Ewan Dowes; and Darren Harrison, Phil Ellison and Kev Humphries made up the team. After the cycle, Ewan Dowes wrote on Instagram: “We’ve done it The K3 Zadara #raceacrosseurope team have won the race and smashed the record. “We’ve managed to continue the great man, Steve Prescott’s, legacy which I’m very proud of I’ve met some great people who I now consider friends for life.

Facts about today’s Equity Release plans How does an equity release plan work? It’s a mortgage that has no fixed end date; the loan (plus any interest accrued) is only repayable when you either go into long term care or you pass away. You can choose to pay interest monthly, roll it up and make no payments at all, or have a flexible arrangement that allows you to pay 15% per annum of the loan amount borrowed. It’s possible to take as little as £10,000 tax-free and leave more funds in reserve for when you need it. Your property remains your own; you have just borrowed against it. Who are the main lenders? The most well-known lenders in this sector are Aviva (formally Norwich Union), Legal & General & Liverpool Victoria. All told there are 10 lenders that have funds predominantly built on large pension funds. Within this niche market, each of the lenders offer different features that benefit different types of customers from ages 55 – 90. Rate start as low as 3.52% Can I protect my inheritance? It works as follows, if you were entitled to borrow £50,000 and you decided only to take £25,000 then 50% of your property would be protected for inheritance
purposes. You can also protect more of your property if you decided to make monthly payments or use the 15% per annum facility which allows you to pay back interest plus capital. What are the safeguards? The industry is protected by The Equity Release Council and the plans come with a “no negative equity guarantee” which means you will never owe more than you borrow. The interest rates are fixed for the duration of the plan and you have the right to remain in your property for the rest of your life or until you move in to long-term care. You also have the right to move your plan to another property subject to this being acceptable to the product provider. Why use my services? Cool for It’s that time of the year again... yep, soon the kiddies will be off school for their summer holidays. And as sure as night follows day, by day seven most will have said “I’m bored” at least once. Fear not though - here’s your ever-dependable Local Life to the rescue!
During the school year, it’s hard to find time to bake with the kids, so now is the perfect opportunity to dig out your apron. To inspire you, here are some recipes you can use to keep the little ones from climbing the walls.
Banana Muffins Ingredients
Strawberry Lollies Ingredients
• 200g plain flour • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 350g strawberries
• 3 large mashed bananas
• 4 tbsp strawberry jam
• 150g caster sugar
• 200 ml double cream
• 1 egg
• 6 tbsp Greek yoghurt
• 75g melted butter
Method
Method
Take the tops off the strawberries and slice them into a bowl.
Preheat the oven to 180°c/Gas 4 and pop 12 paper baking cases in a muffin tin.
Add the jam.
Mix together the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt in a bowl.
Mash them with a potato masher. Whisk the cream in another bowl until it makes stiff peaks. Fold in the yoghurt. Stir the two mixtures together and put in the lolly moulds. Put them into the freezer and enjoy once they’re solid.
In another but larger bowl, mix together the bananas, egg, sugar and melted butter. Fold in the flour mixture and stir until smooth. Spoon the mixture evenly into the baking cases. Carefully put the muffins into the oven and bake for between 25 and 30 minutes. Allow to cool a little and then enjoy!

Kids Apple Pancakes Ingredients • 1 beaten egg • 2tsp baking powder • 100g plain flower • 3tbsp caster sugar • 25g butter • 150ml milk • 2 thinly sliced apples
Method Pop the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl. Make a dip in the middle with a spoon and pour in a bit of the milk and all of the egg. Mix it up to make a smooth paste.
Choccy Coconut Ball Ingredients for 5 servings • 250g digestive biscuits
Slowly add the rest of the milk and beat the mixture so that it makes a soft liquid (this is the batter).
• 45g desiccated (dried) coconut, plus a bit extra for rolling the balls in
Stir in 1 tablespoon of the caster sugar.
• 5 tablespoons cocoa powder
Heat a little bit of oil in a frying pan and put a large tablespoon of the batter into the hot pan. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes until it’s golden brown underneath and almost set on top. Then flip it over until the other side is cooked.
• 1 tin condensed milk (397g)
Keep the pancakes warm in some kitchen roll while you’re cooking the others.
Method Crush up the biscuits in a food bag (you can bash them with a rolling pin) and pop into a mixing bowl. Add the cocoa and coconut and stir together.
Then melt the butter into the pan and fry the apple slices until they’re nice and golden. Add the remaining sugar and stir until dissolved.
Pour in the condensed milk.
Put some of the apple slices inside two of the pancakes for a super sweet treat!
Keep making balls until all the mixture is gone then pop into the fridge for 30 minutes to set.
Scoop out a small handful of the mixture and roll into a ball then roll in the extra coconut.

Every year since 2012, Cycle to Work Day has been the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event, and thousands of enthusiastic riders have hit the streets to celebrate everyday cycling. It’s a free event that everyone can join in. But why cycle? Cycling is one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine because it’s also a form of transport. It burns calories, gets your heart pumping and works your legs and abs. It can also lift your mood, put a smile on your face and improve your general health and wellbeing.
27 We all know the best way to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle is to try and be active: • Cycling is proven to raise your metabolic rate, which can help to keep weight off • Moderate pedal-pushing burns up to 500 calories per hour, which is more than walking or swimming • A 20-minute bike ride to work could use the same amount of calories as a cappuccino, a bar of chocolate or a 175ml glass of wine Cycling can also save you money and helps the environment. You can’t say no to hopping on your bike now can you? The low-impact exercise is easier on your joints than running or other high-impact aerobics activities, but it will still help you shift the pounds and get in shape.

K
nowing the Wirral like the back of my hand, I jumped at the chance to do the latest Jack’s Tracks in this beautiful part of the north. With stunning sunsets and views of the striking Liverpool skyline across the River Mersey why wouldn’t you want to spend a hot summer’s day taking it all in? However I must shamefully admit that the 15-mile Wirral Coastal Walk is not something I have ever completed. But I and my colleague Niamh decided to have a fair go at it and managed a good six miles, give or take (it was a hot day). The scorching sun made the relative easy flat stroll somewhat arduous, making it imperative to carry those water bottles and top up that sunscreen. We parked the car at the starting point at Seacombe Ferry Terminal - opposite the £10m space-themed attraction, Spaceport. The free parking here made the walk ahead less stressful.
With our jackets tied firmly around our waists and our sunglasses poised for action we set off midmorning to begin the coastline walk and beat the sun before it entered its hottest time of the day. On paper the North Wirral section of the Circular Trail takes you from Seacombe Ferry Terminal to West Kirby, via the rejuvenated New Brighton Resort with its Floral Pavilion, Fort Perch Rock, Lighthouse, Marine Lake and new Retail Park. The route continues along the promenade to Wallasey Beach and into North Wirral Coastal Park. The route then turns inland at The Gunsite, the location of World War II gun emplacements, to follow the Birket Cycle Route. Pedestrians can if they wish carry on along the embankment past Leasowe Common where in 1864 the oldest skeleton in Merseyside was found.
31 We did a section of this from the terminal - once parked we headed towards the opening of the walk, to the left of the River Mersey ferry terminal. Then it’s a straight route along Egremount, Magazine and Tower Promenade, towards Tower Grounds and New Brighton. Don’t worry, it’s difficult to miss points of interest along the route – it’s straight, flat and easily accessible for both pedestrians and cyclists. The gorgeous views to the right of you are enough to fulfil your interest, and the colourful houses to the left change appearance as the cascade down the promenade. Wallasey Town Hall greets you in its grand glory, a quarter of the way down the promenade. The hall was built to replace the old Town Hall and its foundation stone was laid into position by means of electricity, by King George V in 1914, while 9,000 school children sang in the choir. Its nickname ‘back-to-front’ town hall arose as it was built to
popular place for anyone wishing to go for a swim as it was free from dangerous currents that lurk in the river itself. Carrying past Guinea Gap Baths you shortly come to a black post sign, pointing to areas north, east, west and south – head for Vale Park and New Brighton. Before you come to the entrance of Vale Park along Magazine Promenade you will notice the war memorial which sits proudly to your left. Once you come to the signs for Vale Park take a welcome break – the café in the park sells homemade ice cream and cakes – plenty of tempting treats.

Situated at the entrance are the memorial gardens, commemorating the 96 Liverpool FC fans who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster. Walking past the hall you are then treated to Guinea Gap Baths, the oldest pool in the Wirral. Between 1908 and 1957 no fewer than 205 world and national swimming records were achieved here. Its name is derived from the days before the promenade was built where there was a break in the riverbank known to locals as Guinea Gap. This was a
The area surrounding the park was established in the 1750s when the Port of Liverpool set up the major gunpowder and weaponry storage magazines in the local sand dunes. Opened in 1889, Vale Park became a public park in 1899 and was one of the best small parks in the north. With its excellent acoustics and striking appearance the bandstand is the main feature of the park. Come back out from the park through its entrance and turn left, you will be back on the promenade heading for New Brighton. Along the way you may notice a pirate ship on the beach – don’t worry this hasn’t washed up from afar
32 rather it’s a piece of interactive artwork enjoyed by all age groups. The permanent tourist, known as The Black Pearl, was originally made by a local man using a single piece of driftwood which washed ashore.

Carry on walking and you will find yourself in the Tower Grounds area, just before the hustle and bustle of the main area of New Brighton. The area is where the Tower Ballroom and New Brighton Tower itself used to be.

modelled on the Eiffel Tower, attracted more than 500,000 visitors a year in its heyday and featured one of the largest ballrooms in the world. Sadly, due to the First World War, the Tower became neglected and was finally dismantled in 1921. Now nearly halfway through the walk you will reach another tourist attraction in New Brighton, Fort Perch Rock. Located to your right on the beach, Fort Perch Rock was completed in 1829 as a permanent fortification to protect the Port of Liverpool in times of war. Inside today lies a cornucopia of exhibits ranging from World War II aviation to naval history displays of the doomed submarine HMS Thetis, the Lusitania and the Titanic. Even Beatles and Elvis Presley memorabilia is on show inside this unusual fortress at the mouth of the Mersey Estuary. You will now find yourselves in the heart of New Brighton, a seaside resort for nearly 200 years. It was created and named by Liverpool merchant, James Atherton in 1830 as a seaside retreat for the gentry. You can also take a trip to the arcades over the road to your left, or check out what’s on at the Floral Pavilion theatre before turning back around for the walk back along the promenade. All in all, a lovely way to spend a hot summer’s day, with plenty of stops and welcome distractions on the

outh Korean motoring giant, Hyundai, has created a brand new ‘N Division’, which has sparked the awesome new i30 N. The regular variant gets a 251PS petrol turbo unit, but it’s the 275PS Performance Package i30 N that I was handed the keys to. This car gets bigger brakes to scrub the extra speed off. At the front of the model, there’s also a no-nonsense electronic differential, which decides all sorts of smart things to keep the front wheels biting into the bitumen. The i30 N’s chassis is electronically damped - and the arrangement has been designed to supply allout precision. At the same time, the system doles out a good dose of refinement, meaning comfort is not in short supply. What’s more, the car has stateof-the-art electronic dampers at each corner that empower it to do things some other challengers can’t even consider - both on tarmac and on track.

The i30 N also belts out a banging tune of its own. Seriously, the car sounds incredible. And when the pedal is pushed to the metal in third gear, all sorts of crackles and pops fire from the tailpipes. What’s most extraordinary, however, is how the i30 N handles, turns and comes to a halt. The steering is outstandingly precise, and the car doesn’t feel edgy at the rear whatsoever. This is some feat, considering that it takes the Hyundai a mere 2.2 turns from lock to lock. The handling is unreservedly razor-sharp, even in ‘Normal’ setting. Things get spicier in ‘Sport’ mode, and there’s a ‘Custom’ choice in which you can alter the car’s specific characteristics. The i30 N also has, perhaps unsurprisingly, an ‘N’ mode. This is only meant for using on a track really, so the ride quality is stiff and hard-nosed. But if you’re in the right frame of mind and the weather and road conditions

are okay, then it is a grin-inducing system. The throttle map and exhaust become zestier, while the dampers become more unyielding. Furthermore, any interruption from the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is played right down.

Sure, this isn’t the fastest hatchback ever made – but the point is, not many cars in this segment will have such an excellent chassis set-up. And, here’s the occasionally thorny bit – the price. Well, with this Hyundai there is no issue. The South Korean firm knew it had to chip away at the main competition to give itself authority in the hot-hatch market. Therefore, an on-the-road price-tag of £27,995 is more than respectable, bearing in mind how capable the 2.0 T-GDi 275PS N Performance is behind the wheel. Moreover, the car is jam-packed with kit, and it feels well screwed together.
Out and out performance is heavy-duty from the 2.0-litre petrol turbo powerplant in all settings. It never feels too much, though - and the six-speed manual transmission hops through the cogs satisfyingly. The hot Hyundai’s straight-line talent is blisteringly impressive, but it is the i30 N’s chassis that blows you away. This is the feature that remains indelibly
