A Grave Mystery An appeal has been launched to find the family of Ince MP Stephen Walsh, after his grave was discovered at a Garswood churchyard to be in need of restoration and upkeep. Walsh was born in Kirkdale in 1859, and had moved to Ashton-in-Makerfield by 1872 with his brother after being orphaned. In Ashton, Walsh became a miner and married Anne, the daughter of John Adamson, who was working as a pit brow lass. The couple had ten children – four sons and six daughters. Walsh’s foray into politics began when he became an active trade unionist, and was elected district officer and secretary of the local union in 1890. Walsh was an educated man among many illiterate workers, and commanded the respect and confidence of those working under him. A member of the Labour Party, he was later sponsored by the Miners’ Federation in the 1906 general election, and

Among Walsh’s list of varied titles was VicePresident of the National Union of Mineworkers, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of National Service and eventually Secretary of State for War. Later footage exists from 1924 of 5ft tall Stephen Walsh in his role of War Minister inspecting the troops: a rather unlikely sight for an orphan from Liverpool! Stephen Walsh passed away at 8 Swinley Road, Wigan in March 1929, aged 69, and was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Garswood. Now the grave he shares with his wife Anne and seven children has fallen over and is in dire need of restoration efforts, and the community has pulled together to help trace anyone who might be related to Walsh.

Walsh was a supporter of recruitment campaigns during the First World War, and advocated for conscription, though in a cruel twist of fate his eldest son Arthur was killed in action in 1918 in Loos, France, and buried overseas aged just 26.

Arts in Ashton The Ashton-in-Makerfield Festival is back in full force for 2019, with an exciting programme of events ranging from September 14th-28th. Established in 1993, Ashton’s annual festival celebrates the best in local arts and culture, and commemorated its 25th anniversary last year. The original festival brochure hoped it would be ‘the forerunner of a much larger, community led event in future years’ - a dream that definitely came true. From historical talks at Ashton Library on coal mining heritage in the district to entertainment nights hosted by local schools, the calendar is packed with opportunities to get out and about in the local community to enjoy a whole host of cultural events at a range of venues.
For more information about the festival and full events list, head to Ashton-in-Makerfield Festival on Facebook.

Classical
Highlights 22 years have gone by since Alan Free thought it might make sense to start a small orchestra in St. Helens – a town where Sir Thomas Beecham began his conducting career. The great cultural heritage of orchestral music seemed to have since passed the town by, so it was only logical that Alan canvass his musical friends back in 1997 to raise enough money for the inaugural concert of the St. Helens Sinfonietta. The first concert took place in October that year at St. Thomas Church on Peter Street, before the orchestra moved to its current home at the United Reformed Church. Twenty-two years later, many of the faces have changed – both among the volunteers who keep the Sinfonietta running and the skilled players who produce the music – but the orchestra has endured and grown. It produces two main concerts per year, often at St. Helens Town Hall, and a series of hour-long mini concerts offering a gourmet taster session of flute, cello, accordion, classical guitar and a harp and saxophone duo.
Alan’s sudden tragic death in April this year raised huge questions about the Sinfonietta’s future, but the team were determined to go ahead with the pre-planned programme in his memory. Despite a minor panic or two, the planning for 2020 is already underway, and will hopefully see the Sinfonietta go from strength to strength. St. Helens Sinfonietta’s next concert will take place on Saturday, September 28, bringing a tremendous selection of classical gems from Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Mendelssohn. Bill Connor – who was responsible for the schools performance in the St. Helens 150 celebration last year – will be conducting, and tickets can be purchased for £15 on 01744 600846 or 07914 114635. For more information about the orchestra and updates on upcoming events, visit sthelenssinfonietta.co.uk

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN
APPRENTICESHIP PROVIDER If you’re thinking about starting an Apprenticeship, there are a few things you should consider. One important factor is choosing the correct Apprenticeship provider, which is key to ensuring you get the best training and support possible. Here’s a few things you should think about when you’re making your choice:
OFSTED Grades You should be looking for providers with a “Good” or “Outstanding” rating so you can be sure that the provider’s standard of training is high. High grades also show that the provider is committed to the development of Apprentices. Visit www.reports.ofsted.gov.uk
Customer satisfaction rates A high score is a great indication of how a training provider really operates. As reviews like this are unbiased, you can get a good view of how people like yourself found the training to decide whether this provider is right for you. Visit www.gov.uk/government/collections/ fe-choices
Employers the provider works with You want the best possible chance of getting an Apprenticeship with a top local company, so a provider with strong links to local employers is a must. Be sure to ask the provider who they work with to see if these companies match your career goals.
How many Apprentices achieve their full Apprenticeship You should look for training providers who have over 75% Apprenticeship achievement rates. This means that Apprentices have completed all the training and qualifications they need to complete their Apprenticeship; a high score means the provider is committed to supporting Apprenticeships through their training. Visit www.gov.uk/government/collections/sfanational-success-rates-tables
Specialism in your sector Does the Apprenticeship provider specialise in your sector? If you want an Apprenticeship which requires specific skills or abilities, such as Construction or Hairdressing, then you should consider whether this provider is equipped to teach you all you need to know. Visit findapprenticeshiptraining. apprenticeships.education.gov.uk
St Helens Chamber APPRENTICESHIPS St Helens Chamber is an OFSTED “Good” rated provider and we can guide you towards achieving your career goals. Wedding
Bells
August was a monumental month for St. Andrew’s Mission Hall in Garswood as it hosted its first ever wedding. Daniel and Danielle Collins had their eye set on the hall since they started planning their big day. St. Andrew’s Mission had just the right vintage feel they were looking for in their quest for a 1960s-style wedding, and being members of the church for two years prior, the couple already felt part of the family. In a card addressed to the Hall, they wrote: ‘We can’t wait to make history by getting married here!’ And make history they did, in a building already steeped in it. St. Andrew’s Mission Hall was originally constructed as a temporary building in 1932 and a result of community fundraising. It officially opened on November 26th that year, with a new Management Committee set up to help with the running of the hall and to draw up a set of rules and regulations for it to adhere to. During WWII, the hall was a temporary home for Liverpool evacuees, and prisoners from the nearby
Garswood Park prisoner of war camp were allowed to come to the hall and join in activities – one of these prisoners chose to remain in Garswood after the war ended and married a local woman. With all this under its belt, Daniel and Danielle knew St. Andrew’s would be the perfect location for their vintage wedding. There was only one snag – the hall wasn’t officially licensed for marriages. Daniel and Danielle were interviewed by local mission leader Rosalyn about their reasons for choosing the venue, and filled in an application form to send out to the Archbishop of Canterbury, who was the one to grant the couple official permission.
Daniel Hough Photography
On the day, a vintage double-decker bus arrived to transport the couple to St. Andrew’s, and the hall was beautifully decorated with bunting and confetti. After the ceremony, Daniel and Danielle headed off to the Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls factory in Wigan for a very vintage photoshoot. Although the marriage license the hall received only covered one wedding, members hope more couples will be encouraged to apply to tie the knot at the beautiful Garswood venue in future. For more information about St. Andrew’s Mission Hall, visit them on Facebook @standrewsgarswood

Principal Mike Hill said: ‘We are really pleased with this year’s excellent results which follows our Outstanding Ofsted grade awarded in the summer. It’s so good to see so many of our students gaining the grades
they were targeted which will allow them to go on to their chosen destination.’

Public Art
Trail
Grab your walking boots and head off on Local Life’s St. Helens public art trail to discover some of the wonderful sculptures and statues hidden around the borough.
The Landings A typical mining family rests on the roundabout by St. Helens YMCA, just off the A571. The Landings was conceived by Thompson Dagnall, depicting a collier picking coal, a young boy breaking the coal and a pit brow lass, who worked on the surface picking stones, all sitting around a central column of coal. The statues were erected to highlight the integrity of the industry to St. Helens, and the devastation of townsfolk when it shut down. The area’s last pit closed in 1993, signalling the end of a dangerous industry.
Queen Victoria Atop her throne in Victoria Square, the statue of Queen Victoria was unveiled in 1905, and originally sat in the centre of the square - it was only moved to the west side in 2000. The Grade-II* listed statue, to celebrate the benefits St. Helens received under Queen Victoria’s rule, was donated to the town by Colonel William Windle Pilkington, member of the glass-making family and mayor at the time.

The Needle
The Workers
The Millennium Needle at the back of the Hardshaw Centre is a functional installation unveiled in 2006 – a spiral metal staircase winds around the 20 metre sculpture, leading up to the car park. Small holes in the top of the Needle allow light to shine through, with floor lights originally illuminating the giant stainless steel piece. But what does it mean?
Unveiled in April this year at Vera Page Park - close to the Steve Prescott Bridge – this bronze statue commemorates all those who lost their lives in their workplaces. The statue was dreamed up by the St. Helens Workers Memorial charity and stands proudly on the former Lyons Yard which was home to a combination of major industries in St. Helens. It depicts an industrial worker lifting a child, and was constructed from old tools and machinery parts – a tribute to what the children of so many industrial workers lost.
Well, the Needle was created to reflect St. Helens’ ambitions and confidence at the turn of the new millennium; reaching, as it does, for the stars.
Glacial Erratic You might have spotted the three large boulders lurking around St. Helens – one located in Friends’ Garden, one in Dale Crescent in Sutton Leach going toward Mill Lane, and the other in Sutton Park – but have you ever stopped to wonder where they originated from? The glacial boulders are theorised to have been left behind by the last Ice Age in the Lake District. The boulder at the Marina Avenue entrance to Sutton Park is thought to be over 12,000 years old, and was brought down from up north by ice glaciers. Photo by Sue Adair
The Miner This statue, which sits on a roundabout along St. Helens Linkway close to Ravenhead Retail Park, was awarded Grade-II listed status back in 2016. Designed by Arthur Fleischmann, the artwork dates back to 1964 and depicts a miner atop a cutting drum to mark the invention of the Anderton Shearer cutter, which was first used at Ravenhead Colliery. The statue actually used to stand across from Anderton House in Lowton before it was relocated to St. Helens.

Saints Star Former Saints star Keiron Cunningham is widely considered one of the greatest rugby league players of all time. Born in St. Helens, he made his debut for Saints in 1994, winning five Super League Championships, seven Challenge Cup Winners medals and two World Club Challenge Winner medals in his long career. Cunningham was also ranked by Rugby League World as the greatest player of his era in 2007. His statue was unveiled in 2010 and remains at the Totally Wicked Stadium today.
Portrait Bench Tucked away in Sherdley Park is a metal bench with some famous faces standing just behind it. The Sustrans Portrait Bench depicts comedian Johnny Vegas, Saints star Steve Prescott MBE and an anonymous glass blower who would have worked in the town.
Dream Designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, Sutton Manor’s Dream was a result of a Channel 4 programme – The Big Art Project. The 66 foot high sculpture originally placed seventh on the show, missing the shortlisted spots, but was commissioned when several other projects fell through. Constructed from white marble and developed in association with local ex-miners, the sculpture depicts a nine-year-old girl looking to St. Helens’

inscribed above, while six flame-like monoliths inscribed with poems by artist Bernadette Hughes and local schoolchildren makes up ‘From Earth, Light’, leading the way to Dream.
The Green Man In The Duckeries in Parr lie a series of ‘Poetrees’, and at the helm, the Green Man. The carved wooden sculpture was created on the site of a disused colliery spoil heap, crafted to look over the newly planted trees as nature takes over once more.
Bold Sculptures Colliers Moss in Bold is home to a number of examples of rural art. The former colliery was landscaped into a nature reserve after the pit closed in 1985, resulting in the loss of over 800 jobs. Now former machinery makes up a strange sculpture garden – a huge pit head wheel still stands on the site, while a winding wheel has been transformed
On the way up, don’t miss the metal canary bench as a nod to the birds who would died of carbon monoxide poisoning ahead of the miners, warning them of impending disaster. Another bench depicts a coal cart with the words ‘Beneath this ground toiled human worms, gave all they had to give’

future on the site of the former Sutton Manor Colliery. It was pegged to be Merseyside’s version of the Angel of the North, visible from the M62.

Welcome to St. Helens
into a small footbridge for walkers at the entrance to Colliers Moss Common. Nearby, find the towering Millennium Bridge as it runs over the railway line, and discover a huge bronze nut cracked from its stone shell. The installations perfectly capture how a site of former industry has gone on to be reclaimed by nature.
Water Wheel Sankey Valley Country Park near Carr Mill Dam is the site of the former Stanley Iron Slitting Mill; built in 1773, the mill was powered by the water in the reservoir, and continued to operate until 1830, when it was replaced by a corn mill. The mill heated and rolled iron ingots forged at Carr Mill and slit them into bars for use in nail-making. Now the site has been rejuvenated into a country park, and houses several sculptures harking back to its heritage including a water wheel and metal carts.

The iconic Welcome to St. Helens sign can be found on the Micklehead Green roundabout on St. Helens Linkway, and welcomes people travelling from the M62 or from Widnes way into the borough. Embossed with staples of St. Helens including the Rainhill Rocket, the World of Glass’s huge kiln, a Mersey flat boat from the Sankey Canal, the Sherdley Bridge and a rugby ball, the sign is a show of what the borough is represents to the rest of England – and indeed the world.
Haydock’s Miner In Haydock Library you’ll find a bust of a miner still wearing his helmet, donated on behalf of the National Union of Mineworkers North Western Area. Designed by Elizabeth Frink, the sculpture points to Haydock’s mining heritage and offers a reminder of the explosion at Haydock Colliery in June 1878 which took the lives of 204 men and boys. Also on display is a time capsule which was buried in the foundations of Haydock Cottage Hospital back in 1886. The capsule was discovered and dug up in 2017, containing a copy of the Earlestown Guardian and annual hospital reports.
Notable Mentions - Norman Harvey, Mesnes Park, Newton-le-Willows
- Giant Giraffe, St. Helens Linkway
- Memorial Cenotaph, Victoria Square
- Griffin Wood Carvings, off Hall Lane

Beautiful
Benidorm By Jess Phillips
No destination offers more versatility than Benidorm. There really is something for the whole family – whether you’re taking the kids to swim with dolphins at Mundomar, absorbing the many fine examples of Moorish architecture or pausing to enjoy traditional Spanish cuisine. The Benidorm skyline is one of the most easily recognisable in Spain for many of us. Its modern metropolitan feel gives way to beautiful mountainous regions and glorious beaches, perfect for taking a day trip out of the centre – try parasailing, head out to the Algar Waterfalls or visit Valencia. But first, take some time to explore what’s right on your doorstep. Benidorm is known for its family-friendly attractions, with waterparks like Aqualandia and Aqua Natura boasting a variety of thrilling slides, wave pools and splash zones for
the little ones. The brand new Cyclon at Aqualandia stands at a whopping 200 metres high – a must-ride during your trip. Head inland to find the Terra Mitica theme park: the ideal family day out. The park offers a range of rollercoasters, thrill rides and smaller attractions for younger children too, combining typical theme park elements with plenty of summer fun. Fear not, the park isn’t just for adrenaline junkies; you’ll find a spa area equipped with Jacuzzis and a huge swimming pool, plus breath-taking performances in themed areas throughout the day. Benidorm is also home to a number of wildlife parks: spend the day at Terra Natura Zoo for stunning birds of prey displays and interactive experiences,
45 and see the elephants roaming free. Meanwhile, at Mundomar, snap a photo with parakeets, swim with sea lions and witness the extraordinary feats of skilled dolphins. Regular feeding sessions take place with the lemurs and penguins too. Both parks help to protect endangered species by recreating their natural environments and protecting vulnerable animals from outside threats. Wanting to escape the hustle and bustle definitely merits a visit to Benidorm’s Old Town, where you’ll find the San Jaime Church. Dating back to the eighteenth century, the Neoclassical church is dedicated to St. James, the patron saint of Benidorm, and set back on a picturesque hill in the Old Town. It features a traditional blue Mediterranean dome and is a must-visit for fans of Spanish architecture. In the twisting streets of the Old Town you’ll also find the ruins of Benidorm Castle, which was originally built to defend the region from pirates. Some of the original walls still stand today, providing spectacular views across the coast. The El Cisne flea

market takes place every Sunday, with fruit and veg stalls popping up on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Foodies will be delighted to discover Calle Santo Domingo, a.k.a. Tapas Alley – so named because of the abundance of tapas bars you’ll find along it. Whether you’re craving authentic Paella, spicy chorizo or something a bit sweeter, you won’t have to walk far to find it. Just a few miles north up the coast lies Valencia: a city of juxtapositions. Spain’s answer to the Sydney Opera House, the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias is hard to miss, jutting out from the harbour as it

does. This state-of-the-art facility is comprised of a huge IMAX cinema dome, The Oceanogràfic aquarium and ever-changing exhibition rooms. Valencia used to be surrounded by the formidable Christian Wall, built over a thousand years ago to protect the city from invading armies and
marauders. The wall was interspersed with twelve gates, two of which still stand today. You’ll find the Torres de Serranos to the north and the Torres de Quart to the west – both perfect spots for gazing out over the city. The Algar Waterfalls are a must-see if you’re staying in Benidorm. The river Algar empties into the Mediterranean Sea at Altea, passing the Callosa d’en Sarria where it forms the series of roaring falls. Regular buses operate to the site, and although it’s a steep climb up wooden steps to reach the falls, the experience is definitely worth it. The area is fully lifeguarded, offering plenty of swimming opportunities, as well as shade to relax in. Benidorm has so much to offer beyond its bustling surface, whether you’re after a relaxing beach holiday or a break to immerse yourself in European culture. Explore the picturesque Old Town or take a day trip to a new metropolis - however you choose to spend it, a Benidorm break is just the ticket for a summer in the sun.

Always
Tired?
How do you feel when you wake up? Are you refreshed and ready for the day? Or do you feel drained, like you’ve hardly slept. GPs report that more patients are complaining of lack of energy. The syndrome even has its own name, TATT - which means tired all the time. If you constantly feel lethargic it is important not to ignore it. TATT is common but there are steps you can take to help yourself. There are many different causes of fatigue, and a good place to start is a chat with your GP.
these cases, and your doctor may be able to refer you to a counselling service.
A GP will test for other medical problems that can cause tiredness, such as anaemia, thyroid issues, food intolerances or diabetes.
If a GP has ruled out more serious underlying causes but you still feel tired, there are lifestyle changes that will help. First make sure you’re getting enough good quality sleep. Make it a priority for a few weeks to see how much better you feel. The Royal College of Psychologists’ advice is to have both a regular bedtime and wake time, and avoid napping. If you struggle to drop off try a soak in a warm bath before you go to bed because this will make you feel calm, and the drop in body temperature when you exit the bath fools the body to start to prepare for sleep.
Many cases of TATT are related to mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety. Traumatic life events, stress and money worries can also cause fatigue. Talking therapies can help in
Reduce your stress levels by scheduling relaxation time into your day. This could be something as simple as listening to your favourite music or meeting friends for a chat.
If you feel overwhelming exhaustion, which gets worse rather than better with activity, and does not improve with rest, you might be suffering from myalgic encephalopathy (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). There is not a definitive cure for these conditions but there are treatments and selfhelp measures that can help to ease the symptoms.
51 A good diet also plays a role in increasing your energy levels. Try eating small snacks throughout the day, rather than one large meal in the evening. Avoid alcohol and drink more water. Cutting caffeine will also help but cut down gradually to minimise the risk of headaches. Finally, a little light exercise is another proven way to fight fatigue. Even a quick 15-minute walk around the block will give boost your energy. By Tracey Anderson

A Real HIIT When we think of the gym we usually picture ourselves jogging on a treadmill, or pounding a cross-trainer, non-stop for 45 minutes. Some people love it, and get a real buzz from a session, but if you’re like me you’ll count every single second as you wait for the torture to stop. What if you could get more health benefits by doing just half the exercise? When I heard this was a possibility at the gym I attend I couldn’t sign-up fast enough. Enter HIIT, High (pronounced ‘hit’).
Intensity
Interval Training
HIIT involves short periods, 30 seconds or so, of high intensity exercise followed by equally short rest periods which you repeat for around 20 to 30 minutes. The idea is to work as hard as you possibly can during each work session, then catch your breath, then repeat. At the end of the whole work out you should be totally exhausted. At this point you might be thinking that the 45-minute gentle jog isn’t sounding so bad after all, but HIIT has a number of real advantages. High intensity exercise burns more calories and more fat. Because you are working flat out your body needs to expend a lot more energy. It can’t keep pace with your needs by simply burning easily accessible temporary carbohydrate stores, so it has to start burning fat. It also needs a lot more oxygen which is why you get out of breath. But this raises your body’s metabolism to a much higher level than simply
jogging. So, when you finish exercise your body stays in this high-energy state for much longer burning even more calories. Your whole body has to work a lot harder to keep up with the exercise, especially your heart. In fact HIIT strengthens your whole cardiovascular system. It’s also very good at reducing insulin resistance (one of the precursors to type ll diabetes) which makes it much easier for your body to regulate your blood sugar, as well as helping to high blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, cancer, obesity and more. HIIT is easily tailored to any fitness level. If you pop to your local gym, you’ll usually find beginner, intermediate and advanced level sessions. But if the gym really isn’t your thing, it’s easy to do a HIIT work out at home. There are lots of apps and videos to help you out. Spending just 20 minutes, three times a week on HIIT will kick your health drive into top gear, so why not give High Intensity Interval Training a try? By Mark O’Keefe

Parbold Eight by Chris Pearce Distance: 7 miles Difficulty: Medium This month we make an overdue but welcome return to the walking capital of West Lancashire to tackle the Parbold Eight, a reference not to the mileage but to the shape of this seven mile walk. As you can see from the pictures, we picked a gorgeous day to tackle an outstanding walk rich in high quality picturesque views of the Douglas Valley, the peaks of the western Pennine hills and also of the Lancashire coastline.
Go through the bars and take one of the paths immediately to the left which merge into one path just before emerging onto Whittle Lane. Follow the road uphill in the same direction, taking great care on this country lane with no pavements. Once you reach the Rigbye Arms follow the road through a 90 degree left turn onto High Moor Lane and then take a right turn on Broad Hey Lane.
Park up in the small car park at Hunters Hill (L40 3SR) in rural Bispham, a former quarry site that’s been transformed into a woodlands retreat by the local council, and is well worth a visit for the panoramic views alone.
Once you reach the bend on Broad Hey Lane, take the track branching off to the left. Follow the path on a gentle descent and once you’ve passed two ponds on the left, you’ll come to a fork; take the left path towards the woods.
60 right hand side of the brook, keep to the lower left hand path and you’ll finally come to steps leading to a stile. Cross the stile and head straight across two open fields. Carry on in the same direction gently downhill, and you’ll end up on a narrow path towards Gillibrand House. Fifty yards after the house, take a left turn downhill, crossing the railway bridge and ending up at the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Cross bridge 40 and turn right down the canal towpath until you reach bridge 39. Cross the bridge and then carefully navigate the railway crossing shortly afterwards. Now the uphill trek begins in earnest as you climb Chapel Lane to the T-junction with Wood Lane. Turn right, then immediate left up the path towards the spire of Parbold’s Christ Church. Turn left and follow the jagged path around the perimeter of the woods. Just as the path turns into the woods, you take a 90 degree left turn towards an open field. Cross the stile and make your way round the left hand perimeter to the far corner of the field, cross the stile and you’re now by the A5209. Turn right, cross over, then take the first left into Fairy Glen, taking the footpath on the immediate left leading down into this ancient woodland. For all its waterfalls and sandstone cliffs, Fairy Glen is a beautiful oasis of calm and tranquillity, much loved by everyone who visits. You’ll criss-cross Sprodley Brook but keep heading gently downhill through Fairy Glen until you reach a raised wooden bridge by some concrete steps. Cross the bridge to the
Climb the path up to the main A5209, turn left and when you see a bus stop on the right, cross over and take the path next to the bus stop, heading down into a wooden area. Cross Alder Lane Brook and then head uphill on a path running parallel to the brook and its woodland surrounds, crossing a

62 couple of stiles on the way, until you come to a track running diagonally right across open fields. Follow the track uphill and eventually you’ll end up back on Broad Hey Lane. Follow this back to its junction with High Moor Lane and turn right. Immediately after the High Moor restaurant take a left turn up the majestic driveway to the Harrock Estate. Follow the driveway (ignore first footpath sign) and once the driveway bends to the left, take the footpath which branches off to the right and follow this path uphill to the highest point of the walk, near to Harrock Hill Reservoir. The path bends to the left at this point; follow the path out of the woods, round the left hand side of a copse and follow the right hand perimeter of the field, heading towards another wooded area. Climb over the stile and turn left following the path downhill. When you reach a 90 degree right turn, carry on a few yards and negotiate your way over a drystone wall using wooden steps.
Follow the path downhill squeezing through gorse, over the stile and via a steep descent through a field until you reach a farmyard. Walk through the farmyard in the same direction until you reach Jackson’s Lane. Turn left and follow this quiet country lane until you reach Bannister Lane where you turn left again, ready for your final challenge; a 550 yard uphill climb to the car park atop Hunters Hill, where a couple of benches await you for a welldeserved rest and those panoramic views.
Where’s Jack? Now and again, we get an enquiry from readers asking about Jack from Jack’s Tracks, our series of local walks. Namely, who is Jack and why doesn’t he write for the magazine anymore? Just for the record, Jack’s Tracks was named after Jack, a border collier who lives with the Publisher’s in-laws in Billinge. A rescue dog, picked up in Jacksmere Lane in Scarisbrick, Jack’s picture was often included in our early walks. As the picture illustrates, Jack’s alive and well and recently completed a coastal walk of Anglesey. He’s often seen in Orrell Water Park, pulling his owners in the direction of Madisons cafe. There are now over 60 Jack’s Tracks walks from the local area, all free and ready to download at www.locallife247.co.uk

Buying a Used
Car?
Buying a car is a costly business, which is why it makes sense to check out the used car market where you can save thousands of pounds. Unfortunately it can also be fraught with problems if you don’t get it right. Here’s how to minimise the risks and give yourself the best chance of finding a bargain.
Research Once you’ve decided on the type of car you need (based on your particular priorities with regards to comfort, economy and space), research the costs
to purchase, tax, insure, service and fuel it. Bear in mind that although older models are often cheaper to buy, they can be more costly to run and may work out more expensive in the long term.
Fact Find Have a list of questions to ask the seller before viewing the vehicle. Find out about previous owners; the mileage; the condition; how long the MOT and tax have to run; whether it has ever been written off, in an accident or stolen; if it has any
63
64 finance outstanding; whether there is a log book, full service history, MOTs and receipts; and whether any maintenance needs doing.
Myths Busted
Inspection
Paying cash is better.
Always view the vehicle at the seller’s address in daylight and in dry weather. Check the sills, wheel arches and door bottoms for rust. Make sure all lights and seat belts work. Check the condition of the tyres and mirrors. Look for mismatched or bubbling paint and uneven gaps between body panels. Check that the mileage is about correct for the car’s age (average is 10,000 per year). If the odometer numbers are out of line the mileage may have been tampered with. Check that the car’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), found under the bonnet and on the windows, matches the number on the V5 certificate (log book).
Dealerships are often offered incentives to
Test Drive Drive the car for at least 15 minutes on different kinds of roads. Listen for unusual noises and look for excessive smoke from the exhaust. Make sure you’re happy with the brakes, gears, steering and suspension. If anything shakes, rattles or grates, the car may have problems that need sorting out.
Paperwork
finance vehicles, so it’s unlikely they’ll give you a discount for stumping up the cash. Check up on interest rates and finance deals to see which is the better option.
It’s better to buy a used car online. There are many great bargains on used cars online, and it might seem more convenient at first. But private sellers aren’t always reliable, and you could be spending money on a faulty product. Always make sure to test the car out before you buy.
A vehicle history report means the car is in good condition. Though these can be a vital source of information about a car, it lacks the detail of repair work carried out in the past.
It won’t be as reliable as a new car. Cars are built these days to last a long time.
Once you have agreed a price, make sure that all paperwork looks and feels genuine (no photocopies). Check that the VIN and recorded keeper details tally with the seller, and examine the service history and MOT certificates to verify the mileage. Get a receipt for your payment from the seller, and finally – make sure the new keeper sections of the log book are completed.
Bear in mind your car won’t be losing as much
Taking a knowledgeable friend along is always a good idea. Failing that, the AA and RAC both offer inspection services. You have to pay but for peaceof-mind it may be worth it.

of its value once you drive it away as a new car would, and that most dealerships offer additional warranty options to protect your vehicle.
You won’t be able to sell it on. There are many factors which go into selling reliability and safety features. When properly maintained, used cars can fetch a tidy price once you decide to sell them.
They guzzle petrol. This all depends on how well a car is maintained - something you’ll be able to judge during a test drive.

Gardening
Are you sitting
comfortably? by Angie Barker If you are looking to make a statement in your garden then you can’t go wrong with placing a Lutyens bench as a focal point. Sir Edward Lutyens was an acclaimed architect in the arts and crafts movement in the late 1800s, early 1900s and he designed many English country houses, war memorials and public buildings. He also designed his classic and unique Lutyens bench. You should always try and include more than one seating area in a garden because having more than one seating area gives you a different view of the garden and also means you can make the most of sitting in the sun as it moves around your plot. It will encourage you to venture out into the garden and beyond the patio near the back door. You will be amazed at how different your garden looks from a different angle and it can become a retreat, a little hideaway. Placing a Lutyens bench at the end of a path, in the curve of a lawn or under a pergola, creates a focal point which will draw the eye and add style to your garden. And if you have a shady corner, paint the bench white which will make it shine out. A Lutyens bench will suit any style of garden. It can fit seamlessly into a traditional, cottage garden or

just as well into a contemporary scheme. Especially if it is painted to match other accessories around the garden. Whenever possible I would include some planting around a seating area whether this be a border or a raised bed, as this will complete the picture and enable you to plant some scented plants which you can appreciate from your new bench. I have always hankered after a Lutyens bench and I think it will bring a timeless, classic style and grace to my garden – just like Hubby does!
