Local Life
So Here It Is… It’s seemed a long time coming, but the big day is just around the corner. Of course I’m referring to the general election but once that is out of the way, we can stick Noddy & Co. on loop and get on with enjoying Christmas. Why is it so difficult for a morally upstanding, vigorous and dynamic leader, ideally with a bit of life experience, to rise to the top job in this country? Did you know that in Bhutan, Dr Lotay Tshering, one of the most accomplished surgeons in this Himalayan country only practices on a Saturday, as he is busy during the week running the country? So that’s a bit of an extreme example, but you get my point surely?

St. Helens Council has launched its 2019 Christmas gift appeal, and is asking residents and businesses to donate gifts to make a disadvantaged child’s Christmas a special one. Gifts can be dropped off at St. Helens Town Hall, Atlas House, Wesley House, Sutton Children’s Centre or at any St. Helens library. The deadline for donations is Tuesday, December 17. For more info, call Tracy on 01744 676563.

A Chocolatey Challenge Now in its ninth year, the Chocolate Orange Challenge returns to St. Helens to celebrate the role of emergency services and charitable causes in the local area. Now businesses and buildings across town are signing up to be drop-off points for chocolate oranges, which will be distributed around hospitals, hospices and emergency service depots closer to Christmas, as a thank you for their hard work in the community.
John Shaw from JC Kitchens in Dentons Green
Prescot Chiropody Clinic
Chris Lamb, who organises the Challenge, came up with the idea after losing his son Elliott, who had congenital cytomegalovirus or CMV – a condition which affects around 80% of adults but is usually only harmful in pregnancy. Drop-off points around St. Helens include JC Kitchens on Greenfield Road, Dentons Green, St. Helens College and Job Centre St. Helens. This year’s appeal will culminate in a special Make A Difference Friday at the Totally Wicked Stadium on December 13 from 9am-12:30pm. There’ll be a final chance to donate chocolate oranges, singalong carols and plenty of refreshments to tide you over before the chocolate oranges go off to be delivered around the country. Chocolate oranges are set to be delivered around Blackpool, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Preston, St. Helens, Sheffield, Warrington and Wigan. In St. Helens, they’ll be distributed to the Merseyside Fire Brigade, Willowbrook Hospice, Whiston & St. Helens Hospital, Lansbury Bridge School, North West Ambulance Service. For more information about the collection and Make A Difference Friday, visit Team Chocolate Orange on Facebook.

Small Business
Saturday Grassroots campaign Small Business Saturday returns this month, uniting small businesses across the UK and encouraging shoppers to support independent traders in their local area. On Saturday, December 7, the focus will be on the successes and achievements of these local companies. Not only do you help out the local economy when you shop local, but you help to create more jobs locally and are often getting something more original than heading to the high street. Shopping locally even helps the environment, with products often locally sourced and fewer miles travelled to the store for customers too. Last year, an estimated ÂŁ812 million was spent in small businesses across the UK on Small Business Saturday.
In St. Helens, bespoke jewellery makers Gibneys Jewellers was founded 32 years ago in Bridge Street, before moving over to Westfield Street and finally making their home in Ormskirk Street in 2010. Carl Gibney owns the store, which is run by his partner and Manageress Kath Woods. Gibneys are members of the Small Business Saturday scheme, joining a network of other local traders in the area. Gibneys is locally acclaimed for its on-site workshop, where their resident goldsmith works on bespoke creations, as well as remodelling and repairing other pieces. Gibneys also stock plenty of different gift boxes perfect for the upcoming festive season!

Win a
Christmas Hamper! To thank our readers for allowing us into your homes for another year, we’ve been shopping and we’ve pulled together four amazing luxury Christmas Hampers for our latest competition! A single reader in each of our magazine areas (Wigan, Chorley, St Helens and West Lancs & Coast) will each win a luxury hamper. Just read the blurb below and answer the question online. Launched back in 2008, the St Helens edition of Local Life is now delivered to over 25,000 St Helens homes on a regular basis, and in some of these homes, including the Rainhill area, Local Life is the only print publication received through residents’ letterboxes. In addition to our St Helens magazine, we also publish A5-sized magazines each month for the Wigan and Chorley areas, and we also produce a premium B5-sized monthly magazine for the West Lancashire, Southport and Formby area. In addition to our magazines, we also design, print and deliver leaflets alongside our magazines too. All this is pulled together by a small team of lovely people (see below) who are based at our offices and
distribution unit at Hewitt Business Park in Billinge, with assistance from our amazing distribution team. In 2019 alone, no less than 483 local businesses and organisations, big and small, advertised their services and products to our readers. We know that many of these businesses do not advertise anywhere else than in the pages of Local Life, and we are grateful to them for their support. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to produce your magazine, so if you value Local Life then do keep a hold of your copy when you have read it, and please do make a conscious effort to call Local Life advertisers should you require their products or services. That’s enough of the blurb! To enter the competition to win a luxury Christmas hamper, simply visit our website, www.locallife247.co.uk, click on ‘free stuff’ and then on ‘competitions’ and then answer the following question;
In 2019, how many businesses and organisations advertised with Local Life? The expiry date for the competition is midnight on Monday 16th December 2019 and the winners will be notified within five working days. Entrants must be over 16 years of age. Only one entry per household – any multiple entries will be void. Local Life 247 cannot accept responsibility for entries that do not reach us. Employees of Local Life 247 Ltd and their families are not eligible to enter this competition.

Christmas Recipes Festive Red Cabbage Ingredients 1tbsp vegetable oil 2 large onions, finely chopped 1 star anise
Serves 6-8
1 cinnamon stick 150ml red wine
Serves 6-8
Ginger & OrangeGlazed Baby Carrots Ingredients
1 red cabbage (about 900g) shredded 2tbsp dark brown soft sugar 2 Bramley apples, peeled and chopped Salt and pepper
Method 1 Heat the oil in a large, flameproof casserole dish, add the onions and cook on a medium heat for eight to 10 minutes, then add the star anise and cinnamon stick.
900g baby carrots, washed and scrubbed
2 Pour in the wine and let it simmer until slightly reduced.
50g butter
3 Add the cabbage, sugar and apples, and stir well.
25g piece ginger, peeled and finely grated 2tbsp clear honey
4 Season well, cover and simmer on a low heat for three hours, stirring every now and again.
Zest 1 orange
5 Once the cabbage is tender, check the seasoning.
Salt and pepper
6 Serve in a bowl with the star anise and cinnamon stick on top.
Method 1 Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and add the carrots. Simmer for five minutes until slightly tender, then drain. 2 In a wide pan, heat the butter until melting, then add the carrots, ginger, honey and orange zest. Cook over a medium heat for 25-30 minutes, turning them gently every now and then, until the carrots start to go golden and sticky. 3 Keep turning every now and again until all sides are browning. 4 Season well before serving.
7 Can be made one to two days in advance, or frozen for up to four months - simply reheat on the hob before serving.
35
Triple Nut & Apple Stuffing Balls Ingredients
Serves 6-8
2tbsp linseeds 1 red onion, halved 1tbsp olive oil, plus extra for greasing 200g mixed nuts of your choice (we used a combination of pecans, hazelnuts and pistachios) 400g can cooked green lentils in water, drained 50g breadcrumbs Small bunch sage, chopped 1 small apple, grated Salt and pepper
Method 1 Put the linseeds in a small bowl and mix with two tablespoons water, then set aside for five to 10 minutes, until the water thickens to a gluey consistency. 2 Meanwhile, place the onion in a food processor and whizz until finely chopped. 3 Heat the oil in a frying pan, tip in the onion and cook for five minutes, until softened. 4 Tip the nuts into the food processor and whizz until coarsely chopped. 5 Sprinkle three tablespoons of the nuts over a plate and set aside. 6 Add the lentils, breadcrumbs, sage, apple, linseeds (and any liquid in the bowl), onion and plenty of seasoning to the processor. 7 Pulse to blend the mixture until just combined - don’t chop too finely or the stuffing will lose its nice nutty texture. 8 Line a baking tray with foil and grease with a little oil. 9 Remove the blade from the processor and oil your hands. 10 Scoop out walnut-sized chunks of stuffing, roll into balls, then roll on the plate of chopped nuts to coat. 11 Place on the prepared baking tray. Can be covered with cling film and chilled for up to two days, or frozen for two months. 12 Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas mark 6. 13 Unwrap (if chilled) and bake for 25-30 minutes until the nuts are a little darker and the balls have firmed up slightly - they will be softer than traditional stuffing balls, but will firm up after a few minutes cooling. 14 If you’re cooking from frozen, bake for 35-40 minutes.
36

Surviving
Christmas
3. Remember: Christmas Is About Everyone Try to resolve family conflicts before the big day and consider what everyone wants from their Christmas.
1. Be Prepared Start adding a few Christmas items to each shopping list now, saving you the stress of that massive shopping expedition when shops are busiest. Only the freshest of items need to be purchased just before the big day. Bake, prepare and freeze as much as possible in advance.
Don’t rush around to prepare everything while everyone else relaxes. Ensure everyone helps out.
2. Go Easy on the Alcohol
wash their hands. Frozen foods should be properly defrosted and either cooked thoroughly, or refrigerated, immediately. Keep raw foods separate from cooked.
Alcohol is a calorie-heavy appetite stimulant linked to serious health conditions. It also lowers our inhibitions and affects our judgment and reactions.
4. Be Shrewd with Food Keep a few quick-to-prepare items in stock to feed unexpected visitors, but don’t buy huge quantities. Food poisoning isn’t festive, so ensure all cooks
Never drink on an empty stomach and aim to have a soft drink or water for each alcoholic drink .
Don’t leave buffet foods out for more than 4 hours.
Alcohol absorption depends on speed of intake and your size, age, weight, metabolism and what else you’ve consumed, so no set amount guarantees you’re under the legal drink-drive limit.
Include some normal meals, at normal times, to avoid stomach problems and weight gain. Keep portion size sensible and stop eating just as you start to feel full.
5. Stay Festive Fit
Ensure you get a good night’s sleep whenever possible, and keep moving; a walk will burn calories and keep you feeling good, physically and mentally. 6. Finally... Keep It in Proportion

VW
Arteon by Tim Barnes-Clay
Volkswagen’s Arteon is a roomy coupe that chucks in some style to boost the VW Passat’s familyfriendly formula. The Arteon’s large grille makes sure it sticks out from other coupes, but the well-built cabin isn’t quite as striking. The digital instruments are cool, but most of the interior has been appropriated from the more conservative, and cheaper, Passat. The space inside the VW Arteon is fantastic though, and the seats very comfortable. The car will seat a family-of-five – with rear seat passengers getting masses of legroom. The boot is enormous, too. Everyone’s luggage will fit in there – no problem. One of the best powertrains for the model is the 2.0-litre 150ps diesel mated to a seven-speed
automatic transmission. It packs enough punch and is economical – achieving up to 50.4mpg. On the road, the German coupe soaks up potholes well, particularly when you move the optional adaptable suspension into 'comfort' setting. There is also a stack of technology to keep you out of harm's way. For instance, the car comes with adaptive cruise control; there’s also gadgetry that will automatically pull over and stop the Arteon if it senses you’ve dropped off at the wheel. No surprise then that this Volkswagen achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating during crash testing. So, not only is the Volkswagen Arteon a goodlooking and practical coupe, but it is also a car well matched to family motoring.

Planning your Christmas
Garden
photo: James H. Miller, Wikipedia
I had a strange conversation with Hubby the other day. I mentioned I wanted to buy our grand daughter the Twirlywoos and their Big Red Boat for Christmas. You can probably imagine his reaction – and if you don’t have small children or grand children, you too are probably wondering what on earth I’m talking about! If Christmas shopping is making you feel stressed, try escaping to the peace and quiet of your garden for 5 minutes. Being outside in the fresh air and close to nature is now recognised as a great stress reliever. I often retreat to the garden at this time of year with a cup of tea and a throw to keep me warm – after all I’ve not even had the conversation with Hubby yet about the Ninky Nonk!! I know it sounds a strange thing to say when really all you’ve got on your mind is your Christmas shopping, gardens should still hold interest and look good even in the depths of winter and the best way to achieve this is to use plants for structure and
colour. Here are some good examples: Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ grown as a half standard. They bring height and evergreen structure and have small white flowers in the winter months – and they look great wrapped with fairy lights. Bergenia ‘Bressingham Beauty’ or Elephants Ears. A low growing evergreen with rounded leaves which colour up red during the cold weather. Sarcococca confusa or Christmas Box. A medium sized evergreen shrub with highly scented white flowers in winter. Skimmia ‘Rubella’ is a hardy evergreen shrub with reddish/pink bud like flowers around Christmas time. They do prefer acidic compost so I’ve got mine planted in a pot by my front door. Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald ‘n’ Gold’. This small shrub will brighten even the darkest winter border If you are stuck for a gift idea, why not buy your loved one a plant which is performing at its best at this time of year and which will give them pleasure for many years to come. After all, garden centres aren’t just for Christmas decorations! Have a very lovely Christmas everyone and see you next year.
