Tick Tock… Well it’s happened – the clocks have gone forward and the illusive British Summer Time has begun! I don’t know about you but I’m not holding my breath for a scorching summer – between you and me I’m getting a bit worried about the state of my office cardigan, it’s had that much use over the last couple of months that I think it’s about to go into early retirement! Whatever the weather there’s plenty going on out there to keep your mind off the elements; we take a look at a local Hot Air Ballooning group, and there is a local wildlife guide pulled together with the help of the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. The What’s On Section is back on p42 with plenty of great ideas for a family day out and all the news from around the local area that will see you safely through the Easter break. For all of you out there who are daring to start thinking about summer and planning events such as school summer fairs and village fetes, be sure to let us know! E-mail the details of your event to editorial@ locallife247.co.uk and we’ll publicise it for free! See you next time!

Prescot Elizabethan Fayre

Summer Classics

The popular Prescot Elizabethan Fayre returns to the town centre on Saturday 4th May from 10am-2pm - it will coincide with the Prescot producers market that will be held from 9am-2pm. The Fayre will transport visitors back to the 14th century where they can enjoy traditional crafts such as candle and basket making, bell tower tours at Prescot Parish Church and donkey rides.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is coming to Knowsley in June with an evening of Summer Classics. The world famous orchestra will perform at Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park in Longview Drive, Huyton on Friday 14th June and will be conducted by James Clark.

Children can have their faces painted; there will be birds of prey, circus skills demonstrations and workshops. The festival will recreate the old May Fayres that were held in Prescot during the era of the first Queen Elizabeth. The event will take place in and around Prescot Parish Church on Church Street. The producers market will be held in nearby Eccleston Street and showcases the best produce from local farmers, bakeries and businesses with lots of great goodies for people to buy. If you’d like to get involved in the Elizabethan Fayre or if you’d like to have a stall at the producers market, please call Knowsley Leisure and Culture Service on 0151 443 5353

The performance begins at 7.30pm and doors open at 7pm. Tickets are £12 and £10 for concessions. You can book your tickets by calling into Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park or by ringing 0151 443 2200 or 0844 561 0622.

If you are interested in taking part, please e-mail your design and suggested name for the beer to smithyheritagecentre@hotmail.com (over 18’s only) and don’t forget to include your contact details – the competition closes on Sunday 28th April. The black comedy by Eric Chappell centres on Vincent’s discovery of an undetectable poison that has given him a very lucrative business as a suicide merchant. This hilarious comedy revolves around mistaken identities, infidelity, poisoned rubber plants and the belief that it really is a wonderful world in the hereafter. The performances will take place at the Rainhill Village Hall on Dane Court - tickets prices are £6 and concessions £5, you can pay on the door or book your tickets by calling 01744 813429.

Recipe of the month

Buttermilk Scones with Fruit Compote Method Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Sift the flour and salt together. Rub in the butter until the mixture is like fine crumbs. Stir in the sugar and raisins or sultanas if using. Gently warm the buttermilk (don’t throw away the pot) and vanilla in a microwave or pan. Using your largest bowl, quickly tip in some of the flour mix, followed by some of the buttermilk mix, repeating until everything is in the bowl. Use a knife to quickly mix together to form a dough - don’t over-mix it.

Makes 10-12 Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 15 minutes

Tip onto a floured surface and lightly bring together with your hands a couple of times. Press out gently to about 4cm thick and stamp out rounds with a 6cm or 7cm cutter. Re-shape trimmings, until all the dough is used. Place scones evenly on to a lightly floured baking sheet or two.

Ingredients

Add a splash of milk into the buttermilk pot, and then use to glaze the top of each scone. Bake for 10-12 mins until golden and well risen.

Scones

To Make The Fruit Compote:

• 450g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting

Place as much of the frozen fruit as you need in the saucepan, on a gentle heat on the hob on top of your cooker. Simmer the fruit until it starts to soften; stir gently now and again just enough so that the fruit does not stick to the pan; do not allow it to burn.

• ¼ tsp salt • 100g cold butter, diced • 85g golden caster sugar • Handful of raisins or sultanas (optional) • 284ml pot buttermilk • 2 tsp vanilla extract • Splash of milk

Compote • Frozen fruit of choice – summer fruit mix is good, sour cherries are fantastic • Sugar to taste

14

Now add sugar to taste - not too much at first. Taste the fruit as you add the sugar so that you do not make it too sweet or leave it too tart. Take care not to burn yourself when testing it! Fruit and sugar get very hot. Once the fruit has softened, but before it turns to a pulp or goes too mushy, it is ready and you should remove it from the heat to cool. It keeps for 2-3 days in the fridge.

Apprentice of the Year Apprentices in St Helens were honoured recently at a glittering awards ceremony at St George’s Hall in Liverpool. The Liverpool City Region Apprenticeship Awards 2013 celebrated the region’s best and brightest young apprentices as well as the employers who support their training and career development. The ceremony saw the region’s brightest new stars receive awards for their hard work, progress and dedication. The winner of the St Helens’ Apprentice of the Year (for 16-24 years old) award was Dean Sankey. Dean, whose training provider is St Helens College, is employed by St Helens Council. He fought a tough battle to take home the award against fellow shortlisted apprentices Adam Carr of St Helens Council and Daniel Crehan of Pilkington NSG. Put forward by their training providers or employers, the three hopefuls were shortlisted from hundreds of nominees for the award, which was sponsored by Liverpool Community College, St Helens Council Leader Marie Rimmer said, “This marvellous event was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our rich talent of apprentices. There are so many people who just need a chance to prove themselves, and apprenticeships are a great way for them to gain skills and earn the right to compete for a permanent job. Well done to one and all.” If you’re a member of a community group and you want to publicise your next event free in Local Life, then just email details along with a contact name and number to editorial@locallife247.co.uk

Fostering Evening St Helens Council’s fostering service would like to invite you to come along to Atlas House on Corporation Street on Tuesday 16th April. The fostering service will be meeting people for an informal chat about fostering, the children that they have in care and to see if you could offer a stable, loving home for a local child in need by becoming a foster carer. The council are currently on a drive to make fostering accessible to more people by offering flexible, tailored support and a personalised service. Working full time, not being able to drive, a particular relationship status or not having a big house for example, will not prevent somebody from fostering. What’s more important is finding people who can raise a local child’s aspirations and provide them with a ‘normal’ family life.

This informal and relaxed group information evening will give you the chance to meet with the experienced fostering team and chat with some of the current foster carers. You can find out more about the service, the financial support, and practical training that are on offer, as well as details about the children and young people currently in care who are desperate to find a family home. sky’s limit

Ever since it was first invented, man has been fascinated by the hot air balloon. Today, hot air ballooning is an incredibly fun activity enjoyed by many people from all over the world. If you’re looking for tranquillity and a spectacular view then this might just be the hobby for you!

It doesn’t just take a pilot and passengers to get things of the ground – there is also a need for a ground crew whose role is crucial to help launch the balloon into the air and help it safely home. Indispensable for every flight the ground crew begin by assembling the balloon and laying it out on the launch site. At the finish they sometimes help by guiding the balloon gently down to the ground and assisting in packing everything away. In between, they follow the balloons’ path by road, observing the progress of the flight and keeping in touch with the pilot by radio. When starting out, retrieve crews usually follow behind the path of the balloon as closely as possible on available roads. More experienced crews will try to get out in front of the balloon, anticipating its path; letting it come to them and watching it land. After the packing away comes the celebration of a successful flight, the sharing of the experience, sights and stories.

With a hot air balloon team the sky really is the limit and there is a group in West Lancs that are on the lookout for new volunteers. The team is looking for a driver who must be over 25, able to tow a trailer and have a clean licence. The team would also like to hear from anyone interested in becoming a navigator; all they ask is that you are physically able to help with launch and packing away of the balloon. Full training will be given and you might get chance to go up in the balloon too! Usually the team fly very locally, but there are opportunities to go away with other aeronauts for a weekend of camping. All flights take place at dawn or at the end of the day and are very dependent on weather conditions. If you are interested in getting involved in this fascinating, sometimes challenging and ultimately rewarding sport and would like to know more please contact hot-airballoon@o2.co.uk

No Hesitation

“Bother!” said the Editor of Local Life, realising that her Friday night booking at Colours Restaurant clashed with a long-organised charity fundraiser in Southport. Never one to turn down a meal, my hand shot up at the speed Usain Bolt shoots out of the starting blocks. It was only afterwards I asked where, and ‘Colours Restaurant’ came back as the answer. Just for a split second, I hesitated. It’s a long time since I ventured into St Helens town centre on a Friday night and I’d never dined at Colours before. Then in the depths of my ravaged memory, I remembered a conversation I’d had with a reader whilst delivering copies of Local Life to the Pinfold Drive estate in Eccleston. We’d had a long discussion about food and this reader, who sounded like he really knew his way around, was most adamant that Colours was the only place to dine in the town centre.

Before I go on, let me tell you a little bit about Colours. This place is one of four businesses run under the guardianship of St Helens College and the objective of the business is to provide real-world experience for students under the expert guidance of the four college staff who work permanently at Colours. The place has been open for fourteen years in total, and for four years at its present location on Water Street opposite the Cineworld cinema. Anyway, I warm up for the evening with a delicious haricot blanc cassoulet. A cassoulet is a staple French casserole, always made with white haricot beans, but can be made with various meats depending on the family budget. This one had a classic Northern (and Spanish) twist of black pudding and chorizo, which performed well against the backdrop of that tasty cassoulet. My partner elected for a taste of the Orient with her starter; a Singapore chicken satay accompanied with peanut dipping sauce. There was a full breast on each of the two skewers, succulent chicken pieces infused with Chinese spices. The peanut sauce initially had a soothing effect, but the after burn effects of the chillies in the sauce set our taste buds screaming with delight!

restaurant Off we went then on a chilly Friday night. There’s plentiful free parking opposite Colours and we were shown to seats in the waiting area where we ordered drinks. The décor of the place was very modern, with lots of curves and funky colours, but comfortable too. After being shown to our table, our coats were taken from us and as we were seated, napkins were placed on our knees by the enthusiastic and attentive waiting staff. It was just like being in the West End it was, and I’m not talking about that long road in Haydock!

34

You’d expect a town centre restaurant on a Friday night to be a stopping off point for the younger generation, but this was absolutely not the case. Our fellow diners were an eclectic mix of age groups, but it was mainly groups of mature friends and a few couples. Many of the diners were on first name terms with the staff and were obviously regular visitors.

There’s nothing like a nice steak on a Friday night to mark the end of a hard week’s work, and this one was wonderful, juicy and tender almost beyond belief and the heavenly béarnaise sauce complemented it perfectly. The chips, oh those glorious chips, are still making my mouth water as I sit here a week later writing about the meal. Cooked in beef dripping, the chips were indescribably perfect, just like my mum used to make, but even better (sorry Mum!). The onion rings were golden, crispy and actually tasted of onion. There was a roasted tomato stuffed with shallots and mushroom that I wasn’t that keen on, but I’m

really splitting hairs here, because it was an excellent meal and perfectly cooked too. My partner raved about a tender Slow-Roasted Stuffed Pork Belly, served with some delightful sage lyonnaise potatoes and accompanied by spiced apple puree and a scrumptious cider jus. The pork was tender and the crispy crackling was superb. Both main courses were served with a selection of seasonal vegetables, and thankfully these were perfectly cooked – overcooked vegetables being a particular bugbear of mine. After a short break, we ordered dessert; and what a delight awaited us! The white and dark chocolate mousse (pictured here) arrived soon after. Beautifully presented with black cherry compote, an extra thick cinnamon cream mousse and a kumquat, this was a humdinger of a dish and tasted

quality and freshness of the food, the portion sizes, the imaginative menu, the good service, the friendly ambience, but in my experience it is very rare that you come across a restaurant like Colours which ticks every single one of those boxes and more besides. It’s an absolute jewel of a place, and after my initial hesitation beforehand, I have to tell you that I now wouldn’t hesitate for a millisecond to recommend Colours to anyone who loves good food and a great night out! Colours Restaurant Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PX 01744 623155 colours@sthelens.ac.uk Please note that Colours re-opens after Easter on Wednesday 17th April

as good as it looks. The white mousse, which was white chocolate orange, was particularly yummy, and the base of the dish was sprinkled with tiny honeycomb pieces, which tasted like a Crunchie – well, it was Friday! There was just no way that the second dessert was going to match up to the first, but it tried its hardest. Quite bizarrely, the caramelised rhubarb crumble and ginger stem ice cream was presented in what looked like a dog’s feeding station, but the taste was anything but a dog’s dinner! The crumble was as good a crumble as I’ve ever tasted and the home-made ice cream, textured with ginger, was absolutely exquisite. Most restaurants have at least one redeeming feature such as; the

Wildlife Watch You don’t have to be in the middle of the Serengeti to appreciate some fantastic wildlife; in fact you don’t have to venture much further than your own back garden! This is the perfect time of year to get outside with your family and spot the flourishing signs of a world awakening from its long winter slumber. Alan Wright from the Lancashire Wildlife Trust told Local Life, “This is the most exciting time of year for spotting wildlife because you see an abundance of plants and creatures and the first signs of youngsters arriving with the warmer weather. There are large agricultural areas of St Helens where you can be lucky enough to spot brown hares in the fields and hedgerows and Roe Deer are often spotted in urban areas as they search for food in the early hours of the morning.” Alan added, “One thing to notice this year is the number of farmers and land owners in the St Helens area who have embraced the Wildlife Trust’s Forever Meadows project; allowing more wildflowers into their fields, which attract insects and are more nutritious for livestock. Look

out especially for orchids in and amongst local fields and parks. These are beautiful flowers which are making a comeback locally.” With the help of the Lancashire Wildlife Trust we have created a Nature Checklist of the things you might be able to spot, so arm the kids with some clipboards and pencils and set off on your own wildlife hinting mission. Share the Care Week

Charity Race Night

St Helens Council is trying to encourage more local people in in the area to help disabled children and young people by offering them a short break. Short breaks provide opportunities for disabled children and young people to temporarily spend some time away from their parents or primary carers.

The HoneyRose Foundation in St Helens will be hosting their annual charity race night on Saturday 22nd June at Haydock Park Racecourse. There will be a full race card on the day followed by the racecourse’s 80’s concert in the evening. The charity is inviting local businesses to join them in supporting the Foundation and be part of what promises to be a day to remember.

They can include day, evening, overnight or weekend activities and these breaks provide an essential opportunity for parents and carers to have a break and recharge their batteries. Being a short break carer is a really rewarding and enjoyable role that you could choose to do on a regular basis, over some weekends or just during the school holidays. Does your planting scheme have the wow factor?

Sarcococca confusa A small evergeen shrub with glossy foliage which produces stunningly scented white flowers in late winter. This too does well in shade. Buxus sempervirens

There are certain groups of plants which make a different impact in a garden. For example one group of plants are termed “back bone” planting - generally these are shrubs which provide structure all year round and perhaps a splash of colour during a particular season. Lilacs are a good example.

This is Box and clipped into a topiary shape or a low hedge will give year round structure and character to a garden. A real class act. It contrasts beautifully with softer cottage garden type planting schemes and will do well in sun or shade.

Another group of plants are the star performers. These bloom for a short time only but are so spectacular that we spend all year looking forward to them. They are very good for the soul and provide that wow factor which every garden should have. The large oriental Poppies spring to mind here – Papaver orientale ’Mrs Perry’ is a gorgeous one.

A perennial with yellow daisy like flowers which perform from July right through to October and retain their structure in winter. The butterflies and bees love this plant and it is guaranteed to brighten up even the dullest border on the dullest of days and it even does well in clay soil.

Then there are plants which provide terrific value all year round, “good doers” - quietly giving the garden more than one season of interest, for example: Bergenia ‘Bressingham Ruby’ This plant has evergreen leaves which turn ruby red in autumn and winter, followed by pink flowers in spring - it thrives in shade.

Rudbeckia x fulgida ‘Goldsturm’

Relating plants to people, I like to think of Hubby as good doer and a star performer. He provides me with good value all year round and he makes me smile even on the dullest of days. But does he have the wow factor? What do you think! Author: Angie Barker Dip GD (Inst GD) BA (Hons) Garden Design For All Seasons Tel: 01942 522 405 Mob: 07857 008 383

PIC AND MIX The C3 Picasso has been a big hit for Citroen and now this supermini-based MPV is back in a revised guise. Andy Enright takes a look. It’s hard to be cool when you’re at the wheel of an MPV. Most of them just smack of suburban school runs and signal the death knell of youthful aspiration. They’re the motoring equivalent of your first pair of grey slip-ons. But does this always have to be the case? The Citroen C3 Picasso wowed us when it first appeared in 2009 and it’s still the funkiest of the supermini MPVs. Not a lot really needed doing to it and the changes to this latest generation car are largely cosmetic, with some styling and trim tweaks. It’s as you were with a range built around 95bhp 1.4 or 120bhp 1.6-litre petrol units or a 1.6-litre diesel, offered with either 90 or 115bhp. The more powerful of these two diesel engines used to generate 110bhp, so there’s been a modest improvement in performance here, with economy and emissions staying exactly the same. We’d probably avoid the entry-level petrol 1.4 but otherwise, the engines are a willing bunch, with the entry-level diesel feeling much more flexible than a rest to sixty time of 14.7s would suggest. Apart from perhaps the digital speedometer, the first thing that you’ll probably notice behind the wheel is the exceptionally light and airy cabin. The three-part

44

panoramic windscreen makes urban driving much easier. Then there’s the high-set seating position, with its excellent range of steering and seat-height adjustment, which gives you a commanding view of the road.

Manoeuvrability and a tight turning circle are great, while the car’s vertical rear end makes parking easy. The soft suspension soaks up poor road surfaces in proper Citroen style too. This is a vehicle that makes the most of every millimetre of its bulk. Jump into the back and you’ll enjoy the broadest cabin in its class. If the front seat is adjusted for a six-footer to drive, there’s still plenty of legroom behind.

In addition, to increase either boot volume or rear legroom, the split-folding rear seats individually slide back and forth independently. There’s even a quality feeling to the fit and finish, thanks to plenty of soft-touch plastics. There’s serious storage capacity too. If the 385-litre boot isn’t big enough, just slide the rear seat forward to increase it to 500-litres which is about what you’d expect from an executive saloon like BMW’s 5 Series. The amount of cubbies and storage spaces is amazing and you can also specify the car with useful extras like tray tables in the back and a rear view child mirror. Pricing opens at around £13,000 and stretches up to around £17,500; costings that haven’t inflated at all with the introduction of the revised car. Citroen’s eMyWay satellite navigation system is added to the option list, along with a reversing camera and rear parking sensors for easier manoeuvres. An electro-chrome rear view mirror is now included in C3 Picasso’s Automatic Pack option at no extra charge and the C3 Picasso comes with 15-inch ‘Asterodea’ wheel covers as standard on base VT versions.

fitted with a diesel engine although if you’re only covering modest mileages, the petrol engines are worth a look. There’s strong demand amongst used buyers for C3 Picassos and the subtle styling changes to this latest car aren’t going to depress values of the previous generation model too badly. If you like the idea of a small car with a genuinely practical element that doesn’t smack of dweebiness, the C3 Picasso is the perfect choice. It’ll take something very special to beat it and that may be a very long time coming.

As for this Citroen’s kit list, well it runs to front electric windows, power mirrors, central locking, ABS brakes and a CD player but unfortunately, you have to graduate up to plusher models for side airbags and the potentially lifesaving ESP stability control system that can get you out of trouble on slippery surfaces or if you enter a corner too fast. The C3 Picasso has always campaigned on the basis of being very inexpensive to run. Citroen learned this lesson with the huge-selling Xsara Picasso, namely that if you introduce a car that undercuts its rivals and offers economical diesel engines, it’ll sell like hot cakes. The C3 Picasso is indeed at its best when
