When I’m out and about in the car the thing that strikes me the most, is what a beautiful part of the country we actually live in. Surrounded by fields and beautiful countryside we’ve got a lot to be thankful for. With Harvest just around the corner, this is a great time of year to really start counting our blessings and make the most of what we have.

Recycling
...the easy way! If you live in St Helens you will soon enjoy an easier and more efficient way to recycle - as the Council prepares to move all collections on to the same day each week. Starting in September, your recycling containers will be collected weekly, with the brown landfill bin and green garden waste bin alternating each week. Alongside this, to help boost recycling, residents can now pre-order new, free, food waste caddies for all food waste. Kitchen and kerbside caddies can be filled with raw or cooked food waste - from scraps and peelings to leftover and out-of-date items. The recycling of food waste will help prevent unnecessary landfill taking place. This cuts the production of harmful greenhouse gases and significantly reduces the waste in the brown landfill bin.
6
But residents can start to boost their recycling straight away! Just check that you’ve got all the recycling containers that you need. You can easily order a replacement pink bag, blue bag, or black box for free by visiting www.sthelens.gov.uk/containers or telephoning 01744 676789. Also, look out for the friendly recycling team who will be attending and holding information events across the borough. For more information about the recycling changes or to order your containers please call 01744 676789, visit www.sthelens.gov.uk/recycling.You can also keep up to date by liking them on Facebook, www.facebook. com/sthelensrecycle and following them on Twitter @ sthelensrecycle
We’re making it easier to recycle in St.Helens To help boost recycling rates, from this September, we are going to collect food waste weekly alongside the rest of your recycling. To be prepared you can pre-order a free Kitchen and Kerbside Caddy, along with bio-degradable bags to line the Caddy.

Happy 20th! Wind in the Willows Childcare is celebrating their 20th birthday this month! Ginny and Neil Taylor have continued to serve the local community with an outstanding service and now provide childcare for more than 400 children in the area. Ginny Taylor, Director and founder of Wind in the Willows told Local Life, “Back in the early 90’s in my role as a health visitor, I was constantly asked by parents and carers about childcare and the lack of nursery care in the area; with two under five children, I sympathised with the predicament! “So I decided along with the help and support of my husband Neil to provide high quality childcare for parents and carers at an affordable price.” With a loan from Ginny’s parents and their own savings they took over a derelict building on Deacon Trading Centre Estate in Newton-le Willows. After they completely renovated the property, they opened for business on 23rd August 1993. “I remember the day well says Neil, “We had four children on the first day and two of them were ours. “But with the help and support of
Qualitec later to become St Helens Chamber, we were able to grow the business.” Ginny and Neil now have seven centres that provide out of school care as well as nursery education, with four of the seven branches just receiving an outstanding mark from their recent OFSTED inspection. If you would like more information about any of the services please contact 01925 223445 or have a look online at www. witwchildcare.co.uk

Pan Seared Scallops Served with pistachio and Parma ham crumb, and curried parsnip puree Ingredients • 3 large scallops
• 1/2 kilo of parsnips
• 2 Parma Ham slices
• Curry powder
• Pistachio nuts
• Small knob of butter
• Seasoning
18
Method 1. Boil the parsnips in curried stock water. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 mins or until the parsnips are tender 2. Puree the parsnip in a blender, add the butter and season to taste. Rub the mixture through a fine sieve into a clean saucepan, ready to reheat 3. To make the crumb, shell a handful of pistachios and chop finely. Place the Parma ham under the grill until crisp and chop into a crumb and mix this with the pistachios 4. Heat some oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. Season the scallops and pan sear them for 1 minute on each side and then leave to rest 5. Reheat the parsnip puree and plate it immediately, place the scallops on top, season to taste then sprinkle the Parma ham crumb and pistachio crumb over the top for a show stopping starter!

Enjoy a Cuppa Prepare to put the kettle on and join in with the world’s biggest coffee morning on Friday 27th September. Joanne McMahon, who works as a dental nurse at St Helens Hospital, will be hosting her coffee morning to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. This is the first year Joanne has taken part in the coffee morning and is urging people to get involved and make this an event to remember. Haydock’s History by Nicola Gray
A day at the races in 2013 promises glitz, glamour and let’s face it, the odd betting slip! And over the years not much has changed, as well as providing a great day out, our racecourses have long and illustrious histories and there is a thoroughbred example right on your doorstep! Haydock Park Racecourse can trace its roots back to 1344 – when Sir Gilberte-de-Haydocke founded the original Haydock Park under the Royal Charter of Edward III. The area of Haydock Park covered Haydock Park Farm, Haydock Park Golf Course, Haydock Lodge and Haydock Park Racecourse. The racecourse just off the East Lancashire Road still retains much of the atmosphere of a park, a reminder of the days when it was in possession of the Leghs. The Legh family purchased Haydock in 1660 from the Fleetwood family, and later took the name of Newton from their local connections; they were also heavily involved with the nearby Newton Races. Although the area for the racecourse existed it was just parkland and wasn’t used for race meetings. Instead, races were held a few miles away on an extensive stretch of common known as Golborne Heath. Evidence shows that the Newton Races started around
28
1680, and apart from a short break in the 1820’s, they continued with a great following until 1898. It wasn’t until 19th February1898 that the Haydock Park Racecourse Company was set up with a capital of thousands of pounds split into £50 shares; Lord Newton agreed to lease 127 acres of land to build the racecourse and the rest is history! The following year, the very first Haydock Park meeting was held under the new hunt rules, and there was a flat race held under the new Jockey Club rules in May and August of the same year. Haydock Park is now one of the most used racecourses in the country with races taking place on 33 days of the year. The Sport of Kings has been around for thousands of years and hopefully for thousands to come, so next time you’re having your beehive backcombed for ladies day consider all the fillies that have gone before you!
Old Newton Cup Day The Old Newton Cup is Haydock Park’s longest standing race and the history of the race goes back beyond the development of the track! The Newton Races had thrived since the 18th Century often seeing the Royal Family in attendance at many of the meetings. The race was famous in horse circles; run over a mile and a half the race eventually became known as the ‘Old Newton Cup’.

Taste Test
Buon Appetito! As my neighbours can testify, the pizza delivery people come to our front door so often that we often end up slipping the excess cardboard into next door’s green bin and yet, it was only when we spent ten days in Italy earlier this month did we start to appreciate what real pizza tastes like. After a few days back in the UK, and with withdrawal symptoms already kicking in, we were in need of that perfect pizza. With an overdraft the size of the Italian national debt though, popping back to Rome wasn’t an option, so we opted to visit the next best place where else than Winstons of Billinge!
This cosy and stylish restaurant/bar is a favourite for local families because the menus at Winston’s have something for everyone. Their pizzas are legendary, but they also do ribs to die for, a selection of delicious burgers, tasty and imaginative salads, authentic pasta dishes and they have recently introduced a number of fish dishes that customers are raving about. To start with though, I opted for a dish I’d never tried before – crayfish tails, Californian-style! These were served hot in a bowl with ginger, spring onion and garlic so pungent that I could smell it coming! It was a gorgeous juicy dish, almost like a substantial bowl of soup where the flavours and textures were perfect; so perfect that I had to be warned off drinking the last few drops from the bowl. My dining partner opted for a colourful Tomato and Mozzarella Salad – just enough to take the edge of her appetite. The mozzarella was soft, fresh and juicy, the tomatoes were ripe and light and the zing of the balsamic reduction worked well with the creamy flavour of the cheese. After much deliberation, I plumped for a gourmet burger and it totally lived up to its name. Encased by a toasted bap, this deliciously sweet and juicy burger was made from organic beef supplied from Forster’s Organic Meats from nearby Moss Bank. Topped with chunky proper onion rings, vine ripened tomato and iceberg lettuce, it was a burger to put others in the shade – this is the real burger king! Equally as delicious were the accompaniments, lovely crispy wedges and a luxury, creamy coleslaw. We picked out a Spitfire pizza to try too, which contained chorizo, roasted peppers and onion, topped with mozzarella, on a tomato and sweet chilli sauce on the thinnest pizza base you’ve ever seen. Ah, forget those national pizza chains, pizza takeaways or supermarket pizzas – this is the real deal! The Spitfire is deceptively hot though - just as the sweet taste lulls you into thinking you’ve made it safely home, out of
32
nowhere the chilli kicks in and dive bombs your taste buds until you’re forced to quench the flames with a drink! If you’re looking for a healthier pizza option without losing any of the taste, then the Parisienne base is the pizza base for you. Most thin pizza bases could double up as manhole covers, they are that hard to bite into, but this one had authentic stone baked edges with a softer consistency throughout.
After a fairly long break, we ordered dessert from a menu that was packed with old favourites. Mine was a freshly made pancake filled with warm banana and whipped cream, and a scoop of the delectable Mrs Dowson’s ice cream. My partner opted for a sticky toffee pudding, which was served with that ice cream again and whipped cream, and dressed with a tasty toffee sauce. Both dishes were delightful and added a sweet tinge to the end of a scrumptious meal.

Winstons and pizza go back a long way. The first Winstons Pizza was opened in 1984, almost 30 years ago now, and blazed a trail for others to follow. However, there’s still nothing like a Winstons Pizza. Those who frequent Winstons regularly know that whilst the quality of food is unsurpassed, the restaurant has had service problems in the long-distant past. Since the appointment of new manager Dionne though, it’s evident those service issues have faded away, and Winstons is once again a name synonymous with quality throughout. I can testify that they also do a pretty mean Sunday Roast, which starts at £5.50 and the venue also hosts monthly food themed events.
So, as my bank manager will be glad to hear, you can enjoy wonderful pizza and pasta (and a lot more besides!) without booking the next flight to Italy! Winstons of Billinge is located on the main A571 from St Helens to Billinge, near the old Billinge Hospital site.
½ Price Offer applies to the lower priced main course. Voucher can be used by up to 4 diners – please call us on 01695 627692 to book your table prior to using this voucher Offer available all day Monday – Thursday only. Money Saving - by Martin Lewis If you live in rented accommodation, you don’t need your landlord’s permission to save money. There are many things you can do to slash bills around the house. With the numbers of tenants rising, rents are fiercely expensive in many areas, so never has it been more crucial. Here are my top tips for renters: Renters have a right to switch and save on energy If you pay the gas and electricity bill directly (not via the landlord), and it isn’t specifically banned in your tenancy agreement, you can and should compare and switch. Don’t stick with the previous tenants’ supplier, as it can be costly. Always do a meter reading as soon as you move in. To find your cheapest deal, use an Ofgem Confidence Code comparison site, where you simply plug your details in and it gives you the answer. Even if you’re on a prepaid meter, you can still switch supplier and save. Yet if you want to convert from a prepaid to a normal meter, it’s best to get your landlords permission in writing, as it physically changes the property. Cheap contents insurance If you rent, your landlord is responsible for buildings insurance, so you only need contents cover. As for what each covers, a quick way to picture this is to think of all the stuff that’d fall if you turned your home upside down. If only you and/or your family live in the home then getting the cheapest cover is quite simple. Simply combine Confused.com and Comparethemarket.com to bag the maximum number of quotes in the minimum time. Then check avica.co.uk and Directline.com, which they miss.
Furnish for FREE! If you’ve gone unfurnished or part-furnished, then online giveaway sites can help you for nothing. Hundreds of top-quality goodies are available daily for free from web communities like uk.freecycle.org and ilovefreegle.org. Some is tat, but some is treasure. Check letting fees Renters can be hit by huge and unfair fees. Some reported to me include £120 for permission to buy a dog or £60 for photocopying a contract. Sadly, there’s little regulation over these charges, but at least make sure you know what they are so you avoid them. Do I need my own TV licence? In shared homes, this usually depends on the tenancy agreement. Joint tenants can usually share, but if you have your own tenancy, you need your own licence. For exact rules (including lodgers), see www. moneysavingexpert.com/tvlicence. FREE boilers Four big energy providers—EDF, Eon, Npower and Scottish & Southern—are giving away boilers (typically worth £2,300) for nothing, plus loft and cavity wall insulation. You don’t have to be a customer to qualify. You need to have an inefficient/broker boiler and be on a low income/get income-related benefits or pension credit. To check, call the Energy Saving Advice Service on 0300 123 1234 (England and Wales). Check your driving licence If you’re stopped with incorrect information on your driving licence, it can result in a £1,00 fine. Over 2.6 million have the incorrect address. Few know your photo licence must be renewed and updated every 10 years (the 4B date on your licence). Renewing costs £20, but is cheaper than a fine.

Jack’s Tracks
Euxton & Yarrow Valley This 5.2 mile walk starts out from the beautiful Yarrow Valley Park off Southport Road near Euxton and takes in Euxton Parish Church, quiet lanes, open fields and riverside walks. Yarrow Valley Park to M6 Leave the car park and head to the main road, going left along Southport Road for about 20 yards to the bend in the road. Cross over the main road and head up Washington Lane for about 200 yards until you reach Pear Tree Lane on your left. You head down the lane for about 600 yards, going round the right hand bend and up to the next right hand bend, where you take the Public Footpath on the left. Climb over the stile and keep to the right of the field, going through into the next field until reaching an opening in the trees that leads down to a small footbridge. Continue across the bridge, and the path soon emerges onto the Cherries. Go straight along this, passing the children’s play area on your left. As you reach the continuation of the path, you go up, over the railway bridge and into the grounds
46
of Euxton Parish Church. Keeping to your left, follow the path round to where it leaves the church grounds and follow it down to the A49. On reaching the main road, you go right towards the traffic lights. Here you cross over the A49 and take a left into Bank Lane (signposted St Mary’s R.C. School). As you walk down the lane you’ll see the path in front of you, heading into the woods. Take this path, until it forks, then take the left fork which follows the course of Chapel Brook. Keep to this path as it winds its way along the side of the brook. You’ll eventually come to a stile, that you go over. This leads you into a field, where you go up the hill and on towards the footbridge crossing the M6 motorway.
Euxton Parish Church Originating from around the 14 century, the current church was built as a chapel by the Molyneux family. After the Reformation the chapel fell into disrepair until being adopted and repaired by the Church of England. Over the years, even as recently as 2010, with the restoration of the roof, a great deal of care has been taken to preserve the appearance of the church and its grounds.

Please be respectful when walking through the grounds of the church, especially if there’s a funeral or wedding in progress, and do keep your dog on a lead. For more information about the church, visit: www.euxton-parish-church.co.uk/church-history

M6 to Pincock You go over the bridge and follow the path down , straight on until you reach the fence at the far end. Here the public right of way ahead of you has been closed for quarrying, so you turn left over the foot bridge,
crossing the brook and up to the next stile. Follow the path over the top of the field and down the side of the edge row until reaching another stile. This then takes you across field full of crops (in summer), emerging onto Dawber’s Lane (A581). Cross the main road and go down Mill Lane. You follow the lane past the farms, all the way down and round to the left. The lane continues on, going under the motorway to a couple of houses, at which point the lane then becomes a narrow path, running along the side of the River Yarrow. Keep going along the path, passing the weir and on into Pincock Street. Pincock to Yarrow Valley Park At the end of the street you turn right, going over the river and up to the A49. Here you turn right and walk up the main road until opposite German Lane. At this point you cross the A49 and head up German Lane. Continue along the lane, going under the West Coast railway line, and round to the right. After about 600 yards German Lane turns off to the left. This leads down to Valley farm,
48
but before you get to the farm you go right down a rough track that takes you to a footbridge crossing the River Yarrow. Follow the path up to the road, where you go left until you reaching the Public Footpath sign on the left. You follow this down a lane to a set of gates, where the path turns off to the right. Take the path as it crosses another brook and climbs out of the trees into a field. The field has an obvious path of cut grass for you to follow. Take this path until you reach the stile, go over the stile and continue to the opposite side of the field, where there’s another stile. Follow the path to yet another stile, at which point you’re on the lane leading back to the car park from where you started out. Jack and I really enjoyed this walk and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Garden Diary - by Angie Barker
Go potty ...for pots! People often underestimate the impact that pots can have on your outside space. Whether your garden is big or small, or even a balcony, then pots can really enhance the look of it by introducing colour and style, in terms of the pots you choose and the planting. There are a few things to remember though with container gardening. First of all think big. Two or three large pots look so much better than a large collection of small ones – and they will need less watering. Then chose your style. If your garden is more of a cottage garden with lots of perennial planting in an informal style, then terracotta is the obvious choice. If however you have a contemporary, sleek garden perhaps with decking, then stainless steel or black ceramic would fit in perfectly. You also have to bear in mind that plants in containers rely on you for their water. Don’t be fooled Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.

into thinking that the rain will keep them watered. In summer especially you will need a watering regime to stop the plants drying out. Whilst containers are great for summer bedding, they are also a great way of trying out new planting combinations without going to the expense of planting a whole new border. This summer I teamed Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’ (English Lavender to you and me) with Heuchera ‘Plum Pudding’ and a gorgeous deep crimson Cosmos and I love it! In fact Heucheras are brilliant for teaming up with all sorts of plants and although I really like the dark purple ones (Heuchera ‘Obsidian’ is sublime) they do come in a vast range of colours from oranges to lime green to almost black. For a bit of fun (see photo) I’ve planted a tall ceramic pot with Imperata cylindrica ‘Rubra’ (blood grass in english) – not everyone’s cup of tea I know but I do like the colour combination. I’ve also grown lots of veg in pots this year from potatoes, courgettes, peas, carrots and lettuce. Hubby is always telling me I’m potty – perhaps he’s right after all! Test Drive - by Andy Enright
Maserati for the masses?
A Maserati instead of a BMW 5 Series? That's the dilemma buyers are faced with after the introduction of the latest Ghibli. The Ghibli is Maserati's attempt to move from a low volume boutique manufacturer to one that shifts far bigger numbers. The Italian manufacturer wants to sell 50,000 cars per year by 2015. At the time of this Ghibli's launch, it was selling around 6,000 units per annum and Maserati believes that this car that will make up the vast bulk of those incremental sales. That's one heck of a responsibility to shoulder. Is this sleekly styled saloon really up to it? The big news first. You can now buy a Maserati diesel. Yes, I know that sounds about as likely as a Ferrari pick-up truck but get over the initial shock and you'll realise that if trying to compete in the executive market in Europe, a brand would be utterly scotched without a good diesel. The 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel is good for 270PS and sounds agreeably angry and has no shortage of torque. The eight-speed ZF 'box is a
54
proven and excellent unit, with rapid fire changes and a small element of dramatic shunt engineered in when shifting gear. Press the sound modifier button and the noise deteriorates from purposeful to something more akin to a diesel Sherpa. Ride quality and body control aren't quite on a par with Lexus or Jaguar, the Ghibli responding to a firm hand at the tiller - as you might expect from this marque. If you don't fancy the rear-wheel drive diesel model, then you have the choice of the 330bhp Ghibli or the 410PS Ghibli S. Both get Ferrari-built V6 turbo 3.0-litre petrol engines, the Ghibli S reaching 62mph in 5 seconds flat, with a quoted top speed of 177 mph. The 330PS Ghibli cranks out 500Nm of torque, and hits 62mph from standstill in just 5.6 seconds. Like the turbodiesel, both are fitted with a ZF eight-speed auto 'box. Drop inside and the interior feels and looks reassuringly expensive and well screwed together. Rear legroom and headroom isn't at all bad and there's even a big 500-litre boot. In case you were wondering, yes, you do get that
iconic Maserati dash-mounted analogue clock. If you prefer to make a dramatic entrance, however, there's really nothing to touch it. The Ghibli has been positioned as a rival to the established executive car elite but does it really square up competitively against them or is there a premium to pay for that badge? Prices open at around the £50,000 mark for the 271bhp 3.0 V6 diesel version, allow a budget of just under £55,000 for the 330PS petrolengined Ghibli and another £10,000 will get you the 410PS Ghibli S. Standard equipment on all models includes 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, plus lovely quad exhaust tips. The interior meanwhile, features electrically powered and heated leather seats, wood trim and a punchy eightspeaker stereo system. There's also a mechanical limited slip differential and climate control with no fewer than 13 vents. Nobody buys a Maserati and expects it to offer tiny running costs but the diesel version of the Ghibli makes some very respectable numbers with a combined cycle fuel economy figure of 47.9mpg. Emissions are rated at 158g/km, which isn't at all bad for a big car that will accelerate to 62mph in just 6.3 seconds. Naturally, the petrol-powered models are a good deal thirstier, the 330PS Ghibli consuming fuel at a combined cycle rate of 29.4mpg and emitting 223g/km of carbon
Billinge &
Rainford Service and MOT Centre
dioxide. The flagship Ghibli S meanwhile, gets 26.9 miles from a gallon of 98RON and emits 246g/km. Residual values will be an important factor, but such is the economy and cachet of the diesel model in particular that it looks as if it might well perform very well indeed. Maserati has bet the family jewels on the Ghibli and can't afford for it to fail. It's a move which stakes the heritage and exclusivity of the trident badge and it puts their product right into the face of some of the most talented cars on the market. Can it square up? The Ghibli's not perfect of course. Its ride quality needs work and the infotainment systems feel a generation or two behind its key rivals. That said, it's a car that's impossible to dislike and has a charisma and appeal all of its own. Will it take Maserati where the company wants to go? We'll have to wait and see for that but if you were presented with the choice between a BMW 5 Series and a Maserati Ghibli, would you really be able to resist the lure of the Italian car? I know I couldn't.
