I was talking to a friend the other day who told me she would think twice before getting another dog. Why? She’s finding it unbearably hard to cope with the death of her beloved pet a few weeks ago. Whether we’re cat lovers, dog owners or partial to a pony, most British people have slightly barking relationships with their pets. We dote on them and they take over our homes. What strikes me the most is that people can find it difficult to show unreserved, tactile affection to people -but unleash the goofiness of a big-eyed puppy and we go to mush! I am myself very guilty of this – I absolutely adore my 2 year-old Weimaraner and I’m not ashamed to admit; I’m an animal lover loud and proud! So-much-so that for our summer holidays we have booked a ‘dog friendly’ cottage in the lakes because we couldn’t bear to leave him in kennels. Talking of summer holidays, whether you’re going away or opting for a stay-cation, we’ve got loads of events in this issue to make sure you have an action packed few weeks. Check out the What’s On Section on p38 and we have the amazing mazes feature on p30-31 – that’s definitely one for the whole family! So before I shoot off to walk the dog for a week – have a great time over the summer and to all the community groups out there don’t forget to let us know what you have planned for the rest of the year. We would love to give you some free publicity, please e-mail the details to me at nicolag@ locallife247.co.uk

Cycle Challenge Hattons Solicitors have managed to raise more than £3,000 for charity after four colleagues swapped their suits for Lycra and completed a gruelling 400-mile cycle challenge for Clatterbridge Cancer Research. Solicitors Mark Cotson, David Merrills, Matthew Smith and Steve Hodkinson committed to months of intensive training to prepare for the cycle from Land’s End to St Helens.

boosted morale when we were struggling. It was great to be greeted by the Senior Fundraiser at Clatterbridge Cancer Research, Bobby Magee, and our colleagues from Hattons as we arrived back in St Helens. Special thanks must also go to Hugh Denning and Martin Blondell from The Steve Prescott Foundation for their support on the ride.” Worthy cause Clatterbridge Cancer Research has funded world-class genetic research into the causes of cancer for more than 30 years, and continually works to develop more effective, personalised treatments for the people of Merseyside and Cheshire. This research is vital, as our region has the worst cancer mortality rates in the country. As the charity receive no funding from the NHS, they rely entirely on their supporters to help them raise the £2million a year needed to continue their vital research. Partner Steve Hodkinson told Local Life, “We are delighted to have raised money for such a worthwhile cause as all our training finally paid off. “We were shocked when we realised the terrible weather conditions but we all pulled together to get through it, luckily we had good weather on the final two days of the challenge”. “So far we’ve raised more than £3,000, which really

You & the law Slips, Trips and Falls Slips, Trips and falls can happen anywhere. You could slip on a wet floor in a supermarket or shop, trip on an uneven pavement or broken flag in the street or there may be obstacles on the floor that may cause you to fall. Slips, trips and falls can cause injuries such as sprains but also can cause more serious injuries such as broken bones. According to the Health & Safety executive around 95% of major slips result in broken bones. Land and Premises owners in a public place have a duty of care to protect the health and safety of their visitors (members of the public). In some cases they have a system of inspection that can prove they are honoring their duty of care, but this is something that can be determined early on in your case as it may affect the overall outcome of your claim for compensation.

you know exactly where the accident happened in order for us to take accurate photos and carry out a site inspection to evaluate and progress your claim. You can take your own photos of the defect (what caused you to trip/fall) just in case you feel that it may be rectified before we visit the site. If you do have access to a camera and you take photos, please use a coin, bank card or similar as a rough measuring guide. Please also keep a note of the names and addresses of anyone who witnessed the accident. You may also be informed by people who live locally that they know that defect has been there for ‘ages’ – this may be someone who lives local or uses the route regularly. Please also keep any receipts for any out of pocket expenses you incur as a direct result of the accident as they can be included in your claim We are happy to provide confidential advice if you have been injured as a result of an accident at work. At Mackrell & Thomas all our clients can be assured that their claim will be dealt with competently and as swiftly as possible. We work on a “no win, no fee” basis and all of our clients keep 100% of their compensation. Victorian Rainhill

Rainhill Civic Society would like to invite you back in time to celebrate an age of Victorian grandeur on Saturday September 22nd. The Rainhill Heritage day is back in full force for 2012 after the successful 1940’s event last year where more than 700 people helped to celebrate Rainhill’s history. This year the Society would like you to join them at the aptly named Victoria Hotel on Warrington Road to learn about its importance in the centre of Rainhill during Queen Victoria’s reign. The Victoria Hotel has always been at the centre of village life, situated at what was a busy crossroad, so is the perfect place to host the celebration. There will be an exhibition of photographs and information about the history of the hotel and events that have taken place there. Not only was it the venue for the serving of refreshments during the Rainhill Trials, but also for meetings, dances, weddings, auctions and inquests in later years. Photographs and information about eminent Rainhill Victorians will also be on display along with details of their occupations and the houses in which they lived, so you can see if you share an address with a famous Victorian! Children will be able to take part in a number of Victorian themed activities throughout the day – don’t worry though there will be no chimneys to sweep. There will also be a display of nineteenth century maps and an art exhibition featuring Rainhill through the eyes of local artists. Bring your memories and any old photographs along with you as arrangements can be made to have them recorded. With celebrations from the recent Jubilee reminding us of Queen Elizabeth’s time on the throne, this is your chance to see what it was like to live under the reign of another infamous Queen. You won’t be able to miss the celebrations as the Victoria Hotel goes to town with flags and bunting, so get yourself down to Rainhill between 10.30am-4.30pm and transport yourself back to a bygone era.

Queen Victoria Reign: 20 June 1837 - 22 January 1901

Speaking in Tongues

With the help of two Polish tutors Aggie and Anna, the Centre offered its first English Course in September 2011. Since then it has had to increase the number of English classes to 3 per week to cope with the level of demand .Thirty Polish and Slovakian residents attended a presentation evening at the Leaf Centre receiving certificates for their attendance and achievements on the course. Councillor Alison Bacon, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services told Local Life: “The interest in these courses has been phenomenal. It has been a great success and very heartening the way everyone helped each other during their studies.”

Foodbank Needs You

Students with their certificates with councillors and senior council officers.

English language lessons at a popular community centre were in such demand that it has had to increase the number of classes available. The Leaf Centre, in Chester Lane, St Helens was awarded £255,000 from the Big Lottery to deliver a number of community projects. One project, to encourage community structure, aimed to engage and work with Eastern European residents living in St. Helens. Following a number of well-attended open days held at the Centre, Polish and Slovakian residents requested support with the English Language.

“First best friend“ “I had a good friend when I was around the age of 12, his name was David Tankar and we had been best friends all the way through school. We went our separate ways after school, until I caught up with him a year ago. He now lives in North America with his family.“ “First kiss“

“First memory you have” “I don’t have a solid memory of anything in particular; rather a nice feeling of having a happy childhood. One thing I do remember was my whole family going to visit my Uncle Bill in New Zealand and leaving me behind because I was too young to go!“ “First school you attended“ “This was Netherby School before I moved to Holmwood School in Formby. I liked to work hard in class; mainly because I liked to be good at everything I did, but I wasn’t very good at ball games as my eyesight let me down.“

“My cousin Patricia had a beautiful red-headed friend and she was my first ever kiss. She was very pretty but a bit boring. I do know her married name but I’m not going to tell you!“ “Last restaurant you visited“ “The last restaurant I visited was Casa Di Roma in Hamburg. I was in Germany for a cousin’s birthday earlier in the month. When I’m at Parbold, I don’t tend to eat out as the food at home is very good.“ “Last DIY task attempted“ “I don’t try my hand at DIY. I don’t enjoy it“

“First job you had“

“Last film you watched“

“I went to Littlewoods with my Dad during the school holidays to gain experience in the work place. It was during the war, so I helped with everything from making barrage balloons to parachutes.“

“I absolutely loved Harry Potter and I did go to see the Iron Lady but I didn’t think much of it. I prefer to go to the opera and I do like to go to the theatre to catch a few shows. The last shows I managed to see were Hay Fever and Sweeney Todd.“

“First car you bought“ “One summer I was working in Littlewoods’ garages on a discarded car that had belonged to my brother-in-law. I worked hard to understand the car, and was delighted when I was allowed to keep it!“ “First house you bought“ “My first house used to belong to my Granny. I moved in to her bungalow in Formby when she sadly passed away. In 1958, I bought Parbold Hall and started to restore the building and the grounds. It was a lot of work; if you stood in the cellar you could see the sky and there were hens running about on the few floors that still remained.“ “First record you bought“ “I didn’t really have to buy any records because my Dad had a great collection. He loved opera and I loved listening to Clara Butt and Nellie Melba. I bought myself recordings of Rossini and Verdi. I loved the music played in the canteen at Littlewoods, the Beatles were happening at that time and I still have a few of the original records now.“

www.locallife247.co.uk

“Last disagreement you had“ “I don’t really have disagreements; if I decide to do something I just do it.“ Last time you went shopping “I worked my way up to store manager at Littlewoods, and once you have seen the inner workings of the retail industry some of the glamour is lost. I’m not a big shopper at all – I don’t believe in spending money just for the sake of it.“ “Last holiday you had“ “I went to South Africa last year on Safari. A friend who lives over there invited me to visit his family. I’ll be going to Capri whilst the Olympics are on to avoid the traffic congestion.“ “Last sporting event you attended“ “This would be the Grand National; I had a great day out. I’m not a big sporting fan. I think you get a better view of things on the television!”

Prescot town centre is how you would imagine an archetypal town centre to be – lots of businesses, a lively market and a great community spirit! However like most town centres and high streets across the country, Prescot has been facing some tough times and now the business community is rallying around to fight back. high streets though local businesses now face some tough times. One business owner is working hard to make a difference, Karen Maloney, owner of Renaissance Health and Beauty has teamed up with Knowsley Chamber of Commerce to form a Prescot business town team. ideas to rejuvenate high streets across the country, but only 12 towns were chosen for a share of the £1.2m pot. “We have been given a second chance to bid for the money with fresh new ideas and it’s hoped that some of these ideas can be implemented even if we don’t get the bid.” The team will be holding a Prescot Summer Festival starting on Saturday 25th August through to the producers market on Saturday 1st Sept. On Saturday 25th there’ll be children’s activities, a bouncy castle, face painting and a treasure hunt. Karen added, “We would like more businesses and retailers to attend the next meeting at the Print House on Thursday 16th August at 2pm. Class is Perman As each year goes by, the UK homeowner becomes ever more discerning and inventive, developing different decor styles and fashions in their homes. Fuelled by makeover TV shows, home exhibitions and specialist home magazines, we re-vamp our living space again and again to align with the latest fashions. But, as all wise readers know; fashion is temporary, but class is permanent, and, by some distance, the classiest and most revolutionary thing to happen in windows fashions over the past few years is Perfect Fit. Perfect Fit blinds are the most attractive and innovative blinds on the market today, and are an ideal solution for UPVC windows and doors throughout the house. Supplied within a made-to-measure frame that simply clips onto your windows or door frame, a Perfect Fit blind is fitted closely to the actual windows and so increases your privacy, ensures that window sills are clutter free and saves you money by reducing heat loss. The recent growth of Perfect Fit blinds in conservatories has been phenomenal, where they can be fitted to the window or roof panels. Homeowners love Perfect Fit blinds because the snug fit enhances privacy, there are no gaps down the side of the blinds. There’s no drilling or screwing necessary either; the blinds just clip onto the windows and the extra space on window sills means that homeowners can put their own personal stamp on what can be quite a sterile living space. The thermal efficiency of Perfect Fit blinds is outstanding, as the blinds reduces the heat build-up in summer and also helps retain heat in winter, when you most need it. You can save yourself up to 15% on your fuel bills in winter when you fit Perfect Fit blinds throughout your property, and with fuel bills soaring in recent years, this amounts to a considerable saving through the life span of the blinds. Surely a case of

26

‘look after the pennies….’ that will appeal to all thrifty homeowners. Perfect Fit blinds are now available in Venetian, roller, pleated and roof blinds. The frame colours are available in White, Brown and Oak, to match the colour of your UPVC and will be maintenance-free for many years after installation. Perfect Fit blinds are now available at premier St Helens blinds company, Galaxy Blinds, and you can get a massive 35% off all the Perfect Fit range at Galaxy Blinds when you place your order before 31st August! Galaxy Blinds have been trading in St Helens for the past 23 years, and during that time have built up an excellent reputation as one of the leading window blind manufacturer/retailers in the North West, with

nent! over 90% of customers being referred from other satisfied customers. Galaxy Blinds is at the forefront of tomorrow’s window fashions, quickly adopting the new styles and introducing them to the local market.

Earlier this year Galaxy Blinds relocated into a brand new 2700 sq ft Showroom/ workshop at 136 Duke Street, an indication of how well this local company is thriving in the current tough economic climate. Customers can call in and look around the showroom and see blinds being manufactured, but many prefer to take the option of the free, no obligation, Home Order service, where Galaxy Blinds visit you in the comfort of your own home to measure your windows and display their huge range of designs and colours. Stephen Riley, the owner of Galaxy Blinds, insists that everyone at Galaxy provides the highest levels of service and after sales to Galaxy’s customers, ‘We are very proud of the number of customers who call us on the personal recommendation of others, and we take it as a compliment that people are happy with the quality and prices of our blinds, and of the highest levels of customer care we offer. Here at Galaxy, we simply believe in treating customers the way we would like to be treated ourselves’. Totally Perfect Bathrooms

Before

There’s no better feeling than slipping into a hot bath of bubbles, for me a bathroom has to be spotless before I can relax and feel really clean. After years of dedicated service a bathroom can start to show a few age spots that you think no amount of elbow grease is ever going to remove! And you’d be right conventional cleaning won’t have your bathroom looking spic and span, but we know a company that can help and you won’t have to spend an arm and a leg. Total Bathroom Restoration are experts in restoring bathrooms to their former glory all over the North West, and all at the fraction of the cost of a new one! Owner Ian Read believes that almost any bathroom can be rescued from the damage caused by unsightly mould and mildew that occurs naturally over time. From his experience in property management he realised that most bathroom problems showed a consistent pattern; leaks, grout failure, mouldy silicone, chipped bath trays and cloudy shower screens. Does this sound familiar? Ian and his team now have bathroom restoration down to a fine art and can restore any bathroom to its original state whilst causing you the minimum amount of disruption. Think ice-white grout, perfect tiles and a bathroom to be proud of; that’s the service that Total Bathroom Restoration can offer to you.

After

Don’t take our word for it - here’s what our latest customer had to say…

Mr Summers of Newton-le-W illows told Local Life, “I wanted to take this opp ortunity to thank the team for their outstanding work”. “The job was awkward and other trades had tried and failed to rectify what was a poor initial install, despite this the team dea lt with all the issues and managed to fully restore the tiled shower enclosure with a finish far superior than the original installation”. “Despite being a messy job the Bathroom was left clean and tidy and read y to use the next day. We were grateful for your expertise in delivering exactly what was required .”

Ian says “As well as restoring your bathroom we can also help you bring to life an outdated bathroom with a few simple tricks. We can source designer taps, slim line shower trays and even help with flooring and decorating. We are really proud to be able to offer a full bathroom makeover service that we know you’ll love.” Don’t just shut the door on your dull and outdated bathroom, breathe a new lease of life into it with a Total Bathroom makeover, call the team now on 01744 322013 or 0800 542 9984. The holiday month August is a pretty quiet month in the garden in more ways than one. Most people with young children have gone on holiday (those of us without - and with any sense - went before the schools broke up) and even

the plants seem to be taking a rest. The surge of spring and early summer has quietened down, with the fiery blaze of colour from the late summer perennials still to come. Yes, August is traditionally a lull in the gardening calender so relax and put your feet up for a few weeks. Having said that, there are of course always a few jobs that need doing in the garden and this month’s include: Deadheading summer bedding plants and roses to keep those flowers coming Watering Weeding Keeping the lawn and hedges trimmed

www.locallife247.co.uk

The highlight of the month for Hubby and myself is the Southport Flower Show. This year it runs from 16th to 19th August and we make it a day out, catching the train in and then the shuttle bus from outside the station straight to the show ground. Mostly the weather obliges but there are always the flower marquees to dive into if the rain comes down (or in Hubby’s case the beer tent - actually come to think of it, he’s in there come rain or shine!) There is usually a sprinkling of celebs as well as some gardening experts on hand to answer any gardening questions but for me it is all about the show gardens (just bear in mind though this is not Chelsea but even so the gardens are definitely worth a look) and of course the plants which you can buy (again unlike Chelsea Flower Show where you can’t buy any plants until the sell off at the end). As usual I will buy some lovely plants and spend the train journey home trying to figure out where I have space to squeeze them into my garden - well, as I keep telling Hubby, you can never have too many plants. Whatever you’re doing this month, have a lovely time. Author: Angie Barker Dip GD (Inst GD) BA (Hons) Garden Design For All Seasons Tel: 01942 522 405 Mob: 07857 008 383

Citroen’s clever, elegant DS5 is certainly hi-tech even before you look at one with a diesel /electric hybrid motor under the bonnet. Jonathan Crouch drives the innovative HYbrid4 version. Citroen’s avant garde DS5 is the most versatile, the most powerful and the cleverest of the French brand’s desirable range of sporting DS models. Bringing together elements of everything modern family motorists seem to like - Crossover, coupe, family hatchback and sports estate - it’s an intriguing package that really does seem to offer something just that little bit different, especially if you opt for a version with frugal hybrid power. This was the first of the French brand’s models to be chosen to take the PSA Group’s clever diesel/electric HYbrid4 powertrain. Under the bonnet of this model, you’ll find a layout that combines a 163bhp HDi diesel engine driving the front wheels with a 37bhp electric motor that powers those at the rear making this, in theory at least, a four wheel drive machine. It’s at the back where things are different, a normal rear axle replaced with one that packages in an electric

42

motor driving the rear wheels. Front and rear communicate electronically depending on the traction needed and power switches seamlessly between engine and battery as required. Like virtually all hybrids, this one comes only with an automatic gearbox, with a set of steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles should you wish to take control yourself. You can choose from ‘Sport’ mode, a ‘4WD’ mode that offers extra all-wheel drive traction for poor conditions, ‘ZEV’ mode keeps you in all-electric ‘Zero Emissions Vehicle’ mode for low carbon urban driving and ‘Auto’ simply sorts it all out for you depending on the prevailing conditions. So much for the technology, but what about more tactile pleasures? Well, you’ll find plenty of them inside where the cabin’s even more avant garde than the bodywork. Someone’s really thought about the inside of this car - and they’ve not felt themselves to be constrained by convention in creating it, with a wraparound dashboard, aircraftstyle overhead switchgear, an analogue clock, square

AIR FRANCE

instrumentation and a novel panoramic glass roof on plusher models like this one, split into three sections, each with their own blinds.

along with the usual electronic assistance for braking, traction and stability control to try and ensure that you’ll never have to use them.

Expect to pay around £28,000 for the DS5 in HYbrid4 form. Though that might sound a lot, in reality, it’s only around £1,000 or so more than you’d pay for the pokiest diesel-engined versions of something conventionally Mondeo or Passat-like, a difference you’d more than re-coup in hybridorientated tax savings.

Every DS5 powerplant claims to be competitively frugal and clean and indeed. The 110bhp HDi diesel comes in ‘micro-hybrid’ form with integrated Stop/ Start technology to automatically turn off the engine if you’re stuck in traffic or waiting at the lights. The result is an impressive 64.2mpg combined cycle fuel figure and a 114g/km CO2 reading that’ll help with your tax banding. Go for the pokier HDi 160 diesel variant and those figures fall to 57.5mpg and 129g/km. The cleverest choice though, if you can afford to make it, might just be the diesel/electric HYbrid4 model we’ve been looking at here which can return up to 74.3mpg on the combined cycle and put out just 99g/km of CO2. And to keep maintenance costs down, there’s ‘FreeDrive’, a customer support package that can be individually tailored to include everything from servicing and maintenance, MOT testing, roadside breakdown and recovery - even replacement of wear and tear items like tyres.

Entry-level models come with daytime running lights, front

foglamps with a cornering function, electric folding mirrors, keyless entry and start, digital air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth compatibility for your mobile ‘phone, auto headlamps and wipers and an auto-dimming rear view mirror. To this, most variants also add niceties like this ‘cockpit’-style glassworked roof with its three powered blinds, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, full or part-leather upholstery and the eMyWay satellite navigation system with live traffic information and European mapping. Safety-wise, a 5-Star Euro NCAP rating is justified by the usual twin, front, side and curtain airbags,

www.locallife247.co.uk

In thirty years times when Mondeos and Audi A4s are rusting in scrapyards, there’ll be owners clubs for models like this one. If that means nothing to you, then you probably won’t get the point of the passion, the care and the sheer charisma that make this car what it is. It isn’t perfect, but greatness rarely is. And make no mistake, this car is a great step forward for a brand that has rediscovered itself, found that different spirit. And not before time too.
