henever I tell people I’m from Local Life magazine, the reply is usually: “That’s a great little magazine, that is...” It’s a common refrain, but what makes us so “great”? As editor, I’m bound to say it’s the quality of the writing... but even I have to admit that is only partially true. The real reason is that we are always thinking of ways to improve the magazine for our readers and our advertisers. This month, you may notice a slight change. We’ve tweaked the style and have launched a brand new Events2Go section. Over the years, we have collected news of events in a very traditional way - mostly looking at local community noticeboards and of course receiving items of interest via email and, to a lesser extent these days, by post. Our Events2Go platform takes this a step further. Now, you are able to upload information of events directly to our website at www.locallife247.co.uk for free. You’ll also find on there a comprehensive ‘What’s On’ guide for the local area and beyond. And we’ve also launched a Facebook page for Events2Go, which keeps you updated with a selection of events across the area. Simply search ‘Events2Go’ in Facebook and give us a ‘like’. So now you can not only keep up with everything in this magazine, but you can now do it ‘on the go’ online. And all for free! See you next time, or maybe before that online?

Little Maya’s a star Burscough girl Maya Turner - who saved her mum’s life - got the biggest applause of the night at a Help for Heroes fashion show. The five-year-old acted quickly when her mum, Michelle, collapsed at the family home last year. Michelle had drawn a picture of an ambulance with 999 written on, and explained to Maya what to do in the event of an emergency. Although aged just four at the time, Maya sprang into action when her mum collapsed. She was able to tell the 999 operator her address and stayed on the line until ambulance crews arrived. At the time, Michelle was stationed at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire and the family lived in

nearby North Hykeham. As a result of her bravery, Maya was presented with a special East Midlands Ambulance Service Child of Courage medal. The family has since moved to Burscough, and RAF Sergeant Michelle has left the service due to a medical syndrome that means she can never be left alone. Michelle said: “We did the drawing and left it by the phone. I never thought she would have to use it. She did one 999 call but got scared and put the phone down. She must have known she had to do it again. “It was good planning because I passed out without warning and woke up on the floor with paramedics and police surrounding me - along with a sobbing little girl.”

Pump action Proposals which farmers believe could devastate their livelihoods have been delayed by at least a year. The Alt-Crossens satellite pumping station switch off is unlikely to go ahead now until the end of 2018. This is because the government is bringing forward new legislation relating to land drainage. Five stations, including one just off the A59 in Rufford, were due to be switched off this year because of Environment Agency cuts. Local farmers warned that the action risked turning acres of arable farmland into massive lakes. West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper held talks recently with floods minister Therese Coffey.
The MP said: “I very much welcome the news of the likely deadline extension for turning off the satellite pumping stations in the Alt-Crossens catchment. It still doesn’t deliver a solution but it offers more time to continue the discussions.”

Martin Mere open
More village homes?
Martin Mere bosses have reassured the public
Seven new homes could be built on land off Moss
that they continue to be open despite a reported case of bird ‘flu. The strain of avian influenza was found in one wild greylag goose. It was the only bird in the 60,000 using the reserve this winter to have contacted the strain and it has never been transferred to humans anywhere in the world.
Lane, Hesketh Bank. Park Homes want permission to demolish the existing bungalow, construct a new access road and build seven houses at the rear of 38 Moss Lane. Papers lodged with West Lancs Borough Council state that the site was formerly a smallholding for the keeping of hens, but this ceased operating some 20 years ago.
However, Martin Mere have put some precautions in place. A spokesman said: “On entry and exit to the centre, we are asking visitors to step on disinfectant mats. This will stop the possibility of anybody bringing the disease into the site but will also stop them leaving the site and spreading the disease elsewhere, in the event that there is another infected bird at Martin Mere. “We have also temporarily stopped our visitors from hand-feeding the birds in the wildfowl collection.”

Centre closure risk The closure of Banks Leisure Centre is “a distinct and real” possibility. That’s the warning from leisure bosses over the future of the facility, which serves Hesketh Bank, Banks and Tarleton. However, talks are set to take place with North Meols Parish Council over the possibility of them managing the day-to-day running of the Greaves Hall Avenue facility. It comes as West Lancs Borough Council has agreed to explore the possibility of rebuilding Park Pool in Ormskirk and Nye Bevan pool in Skelmersdale. Unlike others in the borough, the council does not own the Banks Leisure Centre building. It is currently leased from the Secretary of State for Health, and that agreement is up for renewal in 2021.
Aldi jobs joy The opening of Aldi’s new store in Burscough has created 40 jobs. The new shop, next to Booth’s at Ringtail Retail Park, opened a couple of weeks ago. Its other West Lancs stores include a unit at Two Saints Retail Park in Ormskirk and in the Concourse at Skelmersdale.
Foster carers needed A major push for foster carers’ in West Lancashire is underway. Lancs County Council has recently increased the allowances payable to new foster carers by at least £115 per week in recognition of the rising demand for placements. This means that newly approved foster carers can expect to receive between £241 and £415 for each child they care for. Call the fostering recruitment team on 0300 123 6723 or visit www.lancashire.gov.uk/fostering
Plans to redevelop the site have already been mooted. A report to councillors said: “Options for the site have been the subject of tentative discussions between developers and the Secretary of State for Health. However further progress cannot be made without the involvement of the Borough Council. Options have been broadly discussed for external funding for an alternative facility in Banks, subject to the land that the current leisure centre is on, being released by surrender of the lease. This option is in very early discussions and may not be financially viable. Unless alternative methods of managing the facilities or the development option proceeds, then the prospect of the lease with the Secretary of State for Health coming to conclusion and the facility closing is a distinct and real possibility.”

Parking concerns Objections have been raised over plans to build homes on a Parbold pub car park. Adam Haigh, landlord at The Railway on Station Road, wants permission for two, four-bedroomed detached homes on part of the car park, which he says is under used. However, Parbold Parish Council and some local residents have raised objections to the plan. Parish council clerk Elizabeth Ann-Broad told planners: “The car park supports an active busy public house and is required to provide parking for patrons of this. Car parking space in Parbold is at a premium and to remove such a facility is not in the public interest. The land owner currently offers
this car park for use by railway commuters at a cost. This provision would also be removed under this proposal. The area is at high risk of flooding and major flooding to Burnside housing estate, adjacent to this car park was noted as recently as July 2016.” Stephanie Berkley, of Lancashire County Council’s Highways Development Control department, is also calling for further clarification: “ As on-road parking is at a premium in the village, adequate parking must be provided to prevent additional on road parking on the surrounding highways. “The Highway Development Control Section would object to this application in its present format. However if the applicant can address the above issues to the satisfaction of the highway authority, we would be willing to review this matter.”

Library axe delayed The final closure date for Burscough Library is still hanging in the balance - months after its fate was sealed. The Mill Lane facility was expected to close on November 30. Along with the facility at Parbold, it fell victim of the cuts from Lancashire County Council. However, locals have been able to continue using the library due to ongoing talks about a fresh location for the service in the village.
A spokeswoman for Lancashire County Council told Local Life: “Although the library was expected to close by November 30, a transitional period was a possibility as satellite libraries were developed or established. Burscough Library is currently in such a transitional period. The satellite library that will be delivered from The Grove Young People’s Centre and Children’s Centre isn’t ready yet, so the service is currently continuing from Burscough Library. We are doing all we can to resolve this as quickly as possible.”

Tree pruning alert Homeowners are being urged to stay vigilant over cowboy tradesmen. Concerns have been raised by West Borough Council as many people with gardens may be looking for someone to prune their trees during the spring and summer. Cllr John Hodson, who lives in Tarleton, said: “It is important that contractors carrying out works to trees are properly qualified and insured.”

Don’t panic plea Patients have been urged not to panic over the future of a Hesketh Bank doctor’s surgery. NHS England has written to people on Dr Mark Hindle’s list after it emerged the Hesketh Lane practice could close. Dr Hindle has handed his contract back as the lease for the building ends this summer and is now searching for new premises. Lynn Crompton, chairman of Dr Hindle’s Patient Participation Group (PPG), says she is fighting hard to ensure there is no disruption. “Dr Hindle does not wish to leave but, because he
may possibly not be able to remain in the present premises and has been unsuccessful in finding an alternative, he has been left with no option. “There is absolutely no need to panic about finding another GP. “NHS England has a duty to ensure that GP care will continue for all patients. The PPG is committed to campaigning to keep a surgery in Hesketh Bank run by Dr Hindle. “I am confident this is a cause we can win if we stick together. This is definitely a situation where there is strength in numbers.” To join the campaign, lynncrompton@me.com

NEW INHERITANCE TAX LAWS – ARE YOU COVERED? • Do you want your children to pay unnecessary inheritance tax? • Do you know how much of your estate will be subject to 40% inheritance tax? • Have you reviewed your Will since the introduction of the Residential Nil Rate Band? • Did you know that your Will is key to qualifying for the Residential Nil Rate Band?
If you have answered ‘no’ to any of these questions, please join us at our FREE SEMINAR on Wednesday, 29th March to fully understand how the new inheritance tax laws affect you & your family. The Government’s pledge to increase the inheritance tax nil rate band to £1 million has finally arrived. The rules are complex and so it is essential that your Wills are reviewed as your existing planning could very easily be inappropriate and result in you losing the new allowance.
Call us today on 01257 463672 to book your place.
Did You Know? Many Wills contain trust planning for lots of different reasons, however it is possible that the trust in your Will could disqualify your estate from receiving the benefit from the new inheritance tax laws being introduced this year. If you cannot attend our seminar please contact us on 01257 463672 for a free consultation.

Historic setting Originally called the Leyland Arcade, after a Southport MP, Wayfarers opened in October 1898. It was the idea of John Humphrey Plummer, a Victorian entrepreneur, who at the time owned most of the shops on Lord Street. A splendid example of Victorian architecture with its domed glass roof, intricate iron work, stained glass and mahogany shop fronts that can all still be seen today. In its past ,it has housed brass bands, a large aquarium, a bandstand and since the 1970s has been home to a bronze statue of local legend and Grand National champion Red Rum, who trained on Southport beach.

The Throstle Pickers - led by Rufford man Mike Dagnall - have been formed with the intention of helping local voluntary groups and charities. They are offering to play at fundraisers for free with the only charge being a cup of tea and maybe some sandwiches or cake. Mike, from Cousins Lane, said: “We are all in our 50s/60s and play all kinds of music ranging from George Formby to the Beatles. We try to specialise in audience participation for a bit of gentle fun and entertainment. We are already on the availability lists for Help for Heroes and Save the Children, PDSA, Variety Club and available via all of the churches in the Blackburn Diocese plus the Lancashire Scouts.

Health & Fitness
Feel fab at and beyond
N
By Miona Martic
early half a million women in the UK will turn 50 this year - including TV favourite-turned-fitness-fanatic Davina McCall, plus Kate Garraway and Ulrika Jonsson. But far from feeling past their heyday, 82% of women are winding up, not down, as they approach this landmark birthday, according to a new survey by Boots UK. The poll, which quizzed 1,002 women turning 50 this year, suggests we’re really embracing middle-age and beyond, with over a quarter (27%) admitting they plan to travel and see more of the world, and one in five (19%) revealing they’re now doing more exercise than ever before. Exciting career aspirations were also a priority for a fifth of women at 50, while one in seven plan to take up volunteering. However, while in general it seems women are feeling very positive about entering their 50s, more than nine out of 10 (92%) admit to having concerns about their health. “Women turning 50 now feel younger than their previous generations, with most viewing this time in their lives as a threshold of new opportunities and experiences,” says psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos. “That said, turning 50 heralds a decade of transition, with many physical and psychological changes on the horizon, and there are some women who are feeling less certain about their next life chapter.” Here, three 50-something experts share their insights for optimum wellbeing when celebrating the big five-oh... Boots Pharmacist Liz McPherson gives her top tips on dealing with some common health concerns “Dropping oestrogen levels [associated with menopause] can cause hot flushes, sleep disturbance and low mood. Soya isoflavones is a plant extract that exerts actions that mimic oestrogen, and some women feel this helps give them relief from symptoms. Joint pain that gets steadily worse with age can be a sign of
45 osteoarthritis. Mild symptoms can be managed with regular exercise, weight loss, suitable footwear and joint supports, but for more severe symptoms, speak to your GP. Deteriorating eyesight at 50 is very common; age-related long-sightedness, also known as presbyopia, is a natural part of the ageing process. It can be corrected easily by wearing glasses or contact lenses; visit Boots Opticians for an eye test and advice on frames that suit you. “It’s natural for your metabolic rate to slow down as you get older, so maintain a healthy balanced diet and take regular exercise to help counteract its effects,” she adds. “If you have high blood pressure or have had previous heart conditions, an at-home blood pressure and atrial fibrillation monitor can help you monitor for any irregularities. Sometimes atrial fibrillation is intermittent, so regular home screening can help give you peace of mind and help spot any potential problems. Always visit your GP if you have any concerns.”

Author, life coach and yoga instructor Smita Joshi, talks about embracing the freedom of an empty nest “When your children leave home, the silence of the gap left behind by what seemed like a ‘full’ life can sometimes become deafening. You may have thought you knew yourself intimately, but now, at this new stage of life, with the sense of loss that children leaving home can make, old and buried aspirations and desires now feel like regrets or unfulfilled longings. To feel fulfilled in your own being, develop a nurturing relationship with your innermost self - peace and contentment are rooted in this central aspect of who you are. Experiment with different forms of exercise, dance, yoga, meditation and mindfulness. Learn to paint,
46 perhaps do a degree. Travel across India or China by rail. Try out different things until you find the one, or two, that are a direct expression of ‘you’. Do things that unleash your happy hormones. “Whatever you do, make it something that puts you in direct touch with your deeper nature, expresses you, and brings you radiance and joy. Turning 50 is nothing to be afraid of, and remember, there are things you can now do that you may not have been able to before, whether because of work or home priorities. You can now embrace all the passions you left behind.” Janey Lee Grace, author of Look Great Naturally... Without Ditching The Lipstick, says looking good really is about what’s on the inside “I think as you age, it becomes so much more important to feel comfortable in your own skin. I can absolutely assure you it’s the ‘energy’ of a person that really shows beauty, not whether or not they have wrinkle-free skin or the perfect pout. Having

said that, few of us can accept everything going south and our once youthful looks descending into wrinkle-dom, so how we can embrace our age and still look and feel great? I believe it’s all down to the natural approach, it IS possible to look and feel great without resorting to chemical concoctions and invasive treatments. “Eat well, as unprocessed as possible, but be realistic - of course the odd glass of wine is OK, and the odd pudding. Ditch the chemicals in your skincare and personal care products. It’s easier than it sounds; just because you have always ‘sworn’ by that night cream doesn’t mean it’s the only one for you. Your state of mind is critical. Give yourself the gift of time out to relax and de-stress and find something that makes you happy.”

The leading provider of bespoke private care
Care in your OWN home ASK AMANDA! Amanda Singleton is the Registered Care Manager for Independent Living – she answers your questions.
At Christmas we became aware of just how difficult mum is finding things. What can be put in place for us? ANSWER. In January we get calls from relatives who have realised their loved ones aren’t coping as well as they thought. Spending an hour with a loved one or telephoning does not always reveal that they are becoming more forgetful, less mobile, a poorer appetite or their appearance is being neglected.
If a person’s needs are social then companionship could be a good solution. You may just want someone to pop in each day for a chat, make sure they are eating, drinking and taking medication. For serious health issues we can help with personal care: washing, dressing etc. You can have a few hours a week, or a fixed daily routine. If your relative is in reasonable health we can take them out as our carers have car insurance and we have a wheelchair available. We can take people to events: shopping, garden centres etc. We can also help with medical appointments. If the situation is medical we can prompt medication, help wash and dress, provide food, shop and housework. If a loved one feels unsafe at night we can stay 10pm to 7am. Night care is often used after a fall, serious illness or a hospital admission. In today’s busy world we understand relatives cannot be there all the time. We provide peace of mind, if we find someone falls ill, not eating/drinking, or has a fall we can inform a next of kin or the support services immediately.
If we can help with respite care for a loved one, or provide general help

Counting on a new

David Sudworth meets the villagers campaigning to rebuild their local community centre
I
f local tradition had been strictly followed, Hesketh Bank would have its new community centre by now. In fact, it would be celebrating its 13th birthday this year. “The land was purchased in 1944, the first building was erected in 1964 and the second building came in 1984. We seem to do things every 20 years here! laughs Mike Ellis. As chairman of Trustees, Mike can be forgiven for not delivering a new facility in 2004. Not only was he not residing in the village back then, but the amount of housebuilding locally in recent years - with more to come - has put the need for a new centre firmly in the spotlight.
49 “The thing is, a lot of homes are going to be built around here soon. It has already started but there is already a pressing need now.” Mike has a point. Earlier this year, Persimmon Homes were knocked back over plans for 212 homes at the Alty’s site on Station Road. The site is already earmarked for development, so locals seem resigned to the fact that it will be developed. Throughout Hesketh Bank, Tarleton and Banks, developers are keen to get building. Not that this is anything new. The population of these villages has grown massively since the end of World War II. A number of people have moved in to Hesketh Bank from other areas. Indeed, Mike, his wife Sue, and fellow trustees Steve Kirby and Diane Earles are not originally from Hesketh Bank.
“We want to build a village hall of the future” Yet they feel so at home in the village that they are working together to provide the most basic of local facilities.
The commemorative scroll marking the centre’s history Kirkby-born Trustee Diane Earles believes getting the support of the parish council is crucial: “If we can get the parish council to support us, that would help massively. The running costs are around £350 a month but we are hoping the new centre will be cheaper to run. We’re looking at it being eco-
Mike and Sue both hail from Shropshire but came to West Lancs via the Isle of Man six years ago. Sue, who is bookings secretary and a Trustee, said: “We wanted to be closer to family and we love it here. We’ve been made to feel really welcome. “The village hall is not really fit for purpose these days. There are two buildings, one at the back of the site which came from Wheeton Army Camp in 1984. The building fronting on to Station Road was built in 1964. The plan is to demolish both buildings and create a new, state-of-the-art community centre at the back of the site.” Early talks have already taken place with the borough council’s planning department, and the possibility of getting a slice of cash from the council’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CiL) has also been mooted. However, that alone is unlikely to plug the estimated £300,000 cost of building a new centre.
Diane brews up at the community centre
50 friendly, with solar electricity and a ‘living wall’. It needs to be a village hall of the future.” Mike agrees: “I think we could heat pump the ground underneath. At the moment we have gas in the front hall and oil in the back hall. “I also think it should be architecturally interesting. It’s something we’ve been looking into but we also want the community to get involved and have their say.” To get the ball rolling, a comedy night fundraiser was held recently, with more events in the pipeline. A lottery has also been set up at £1 a week with cash prizes available. They’re also encouraging locals to
“Architecturally interesting” become a ‘Friend’ of the community centre, at a cost of £5 a year. In the end, they want to create a centre to give the village a heart which they feel it is lacking at the moment. “It’s currently the cafe at Booths!” laughs Mike. “And for the youngsters, they’ve either got the option of playing on the games area here or hanging around outside Bargain Booze.
Mike, Sue, Steve and Diane outside the large hall “There’s a lot of young families and retired people in the village now. The University of the Third Age has seen its membership double to 140 people.” Trustee Steve Kirby, who is also a parish councillor and originally from Preston, believes the will is there, it’s just now a case a channelling the positive energy into make it a reality. “There is a can-do attitude in the village, and that’s great. We’d also love to see more businesses come on board and support us.” The community centre’s AGM is on Thursday, April 6, from 7.30pm in the front hall. Tea and biscuits available - everyone welcome. Worsley C
ontinuing our recent, unofficial theme of ‘Places You Never Realised Are Actually Very Pretty’, we headed over to Worsley for this month’s outing. Situated next to the thunderous M60 Manchester Ring Road, it’s hardly the first place which springs to mind. But once the din of the traffic ebbs away, it can be a very uplifting, snap-happy stroll. We started this walk from the Worsley Court House pay and display car park. It’s located just off Junction 13 of the M60, on the B5211, Barton Road (postcode M28 2PB). Once suitably booted up, we head out of the car park and across the main road, taking the path past the Packet House overlooking the Bridgewater Canal
by David Sudworth
(look for the Bridgewater Dental Surgery sign). This takes you over a small footbridge and then up some steps which emerge on Worsley Road. But before you get there, I guarantee you’ll have stopped a good few times to survey the beautiful homes nestled along the canal. The most majestic is the Packet House itself. This Grade II listed building dates back to 1760 and the half-timbering was added around 1850 by the 1st Earl of Ellesmere. The bridge nearby is known as Alphabet Bridge. It got its name from children at a local school who used the bridge daily and practised their alphabet on the 26 planks that made up the span. There are still 26 planks, so you have the option of keeping up the tradition as you cross.
52
When on Worsley Road, we cross over and went right until we turned in to Mill Brow by the side of Hunters Estate Agents. Walk up the brow, which is a bit steep, and continue until you reach the steps that go down in front of Old Warke Dam. You pretty much go down the steps, across Worsley Brook and up to your right, following the path until it brings you on to the lane. Here you go straight across, taking the footpath round and into the woods. Continue along until you pass over the footbridge across Kempnough Brook. Here turn right and follow the path until you reach the Lodge (confession time; we actually stopped for a few minutes prior to reaching the Lodge to have a play on the rope swing we saw in the woods!) Once you’ve unnecessarily burned off any lingering energy you had left, dig deep and carry on. Passing the lodge, take the foot path on your left and follow this until you reach Route 55 of the National Cycle Network. Once down the steps and on the cycle path, turn right, walking towards the bridge at Worsley Road. You’re now following the route of the old Manchester-Wigan Railway, which closed to passengers in May 1969. The line, which had been in use since 1864, was built to serve local coal pits, with stations at Leigh and Pennington.
It’s nice to see though that not all traces of its past have been erased, for just past the bridge, you are greeted by the platforms of the old Worsley Station, a grand old building by all accounts made of white brick with red and black detailing. It also had two First Class and two Second Class waiting rooms and a glass canopy.
53 About 500 yards past the old station you take the steps down to the pond and keeping to the left continue through the park known as Dukes Drive. The path starts to curve right, which you follow until it reaches the canal. At this point we opted to go right, heading back along the canal, but you can go left, head over the canal bridge, and back up the other side of the canal. Staying on our route we kept to the footpath by the canal. This nice path changes to a rough path as you leave Dukes Drive, and becomes quite narrow.

Worsley Green
At this point go left, passing the lovely row of cottages, before turning left into The Green.
Although a picture postcard
This is yet another beautiful find, oozing in period charm and elegance. From here continue down and over to the bridge, taking in the view of the Packet House. After a few minutes taking photos we cross the main road and head back to the car park.
the case at Worsley Green.
In all, this four mile walk is a real find. Not your average Jack’s Tracks outing, but nonetheless a worthy addition to our series. On a perfect sunny day, it would be an excellent stroll. But even during the worst of winter’s offerings, you could do a lot worse than Worsley.

Bridgewater, known as “The Canal Duke”. This was
these days, it wasn’t always Until the early 1900s, it was Worsley Yard, the centre of an industrial complex that became busier with the Canal. It included a boat building yard, motor mill, timber yard, nail makers, wheelwrights, basket-makers and a warehouse. It is still possible to see the imprints in the grass where railway sidings ran. On the Green is a monument to Francis, 3rd Duke of constructed from the base of the Work’s Yard chimney. It was originally a fountain and the base carries a Latin inscription, which reads: “A lofty column breathing smoke and fire. Did I the builder’s glory once aspire. Whose founder was that Duke who far and wide. Bridged water through Bridgewater’s countryside.”

Audi
F
Q2
by Tim Barnes-Clay
irst impressions when approaching the new Audi Q2 are good. Like all Audis, it manages to stand out, even if it doesn’t try anything spectacular design-wise. In the more daring ‘Vegas Yellow’, it makes quite a visual impact though, and is unmistakeably Audi in appearance. The large grill and muscular body are complimented by a sloping roof line and contrast C-pillar which – in S-Line trim at least – is nicely offset in metallic silver. Sadly, on the smallest alloy wheels it looks puny, so bigger is better there.
of road, being capable of overtaking on motorways and A-roads, yet remaining suitably quiet when pottering through towns and villages. If your annual mileage is quite low, this is a fine engine to go for, as you’re unlikely to need anything more than this. While the engine is quiet, the S-Tronic automatic gearbox is a little jumpy at low speeds, and tends to put too much torque through the wheels when trying to move off. This results in some minor wheel-spin. The S-Tronic unit has never quite been up to the high level of BMW’s eight-speed unit, but
The interior is more of the same, being almost identical to that which you’d find in the A3 hatchback. That’s no bad thing though, as Audi makes some of the most pleasant interior spaces on the market today, and feels decidedly upmarket if it’s kitted out with a range of technology options, such as the virtual cockpit.
it is far from a bad gearbox, and, when up to speed, works quickly and seamlessly.
We tested the Audi Q2 in 150PS 1.4-litre petrol guise. It provides plenty enough power for all types
Our petrol test car was the S-Line, fitted with sports suspension and larger alloy wheels, and we found it to be slightly too firm for our liking. Being a ‘Q’, you get into it expecting a smooth ride, but you get something more like a firm hatchback than a compact SUV. We suspect Audi’s excellent seating helps offset this a little. If the trade-off was
56 entertaining cornering and impressive dynamics, we’d be content, but it isn’t exactly fun to drive either. The steering is rather numb and it doesn’t feel particularly settled going quicker around corners, though it doesn’t feel out of its comfort zone either. Audi was keen to point out that it doesn’t skimp on technology with the new Q2; it uses the same tech in the fresh compact SUV as it does in its higherend products, like the TT sports car or Q7 SUV. The stunning virtual cockpit is an option once again, and you can also get such goodies, such as adaptive cruise control, heated seats, a power operated boot, and Audi’s parking assistance system. The problem is, almost these luxuries cost extra. Audi has made a big deal about the new Q2 starting at under £20,000, yet it also points out that it expects only 10 per cent of people to buy the lowest ‘SE’ trim level. The petrol model we tested came in at £5 over £34,000, and, even for a test car, that’s an astonishing amount of money.
Fast Facts • 0-62 mph: 8.5 secs • Combined mpg: 52.3 • Engine: 1395cc 4-cylinder turbo petrol • Max. power (PS): 150 • CO2: 123 g/km • Price: £27,730
doesn’t matter one bit what we think, because wealthy people love something a little bit different with a respected badge on its nose. It might not be perfect, but it will sell, and sell well. The new Q2 is going to be another Audi success
Car Paintwork Repairs
Look to spend between £25,000 and £30,000 and you’re probably on the right track with the new Audi Q2. It’s a high-quality product and looks great, but it doesn’t inspire us to spend more on it than a normal Audi A3, and the Q3 SUV isn’t far off price-wise. It
