Something about

I

May

’ve come to the realisation I’m at my happiest around water. I don’t know whether it’s the ripple in a reservoir, the clapping of waves, or the fresh breeze that gives me a new lease of life, but I know when I’m by water this is where I’m the most calm. My happiest memory is when I was on holiday in Spain, on a pedalo on a lake surrounded by rolling mountains, and that was a moment in time where I felt anything was possible. And whenever I need a little boost at home, I get outside and enjoy the vast green spaces our local area has to offer. And I think May is a great month to get out and enjoy ourselves. There are lots of activities for the whole family to enjoy this month, including dabbling in Beekeeping – something I’m sure will get you buzzing. The Tree Bee Society’s Beekeeping Taster Sessions are running from May through to June for individuals and families interested in trying something a little different. But if like me, you enjoy being around water, there’s a whole host of things you can do. Like a day trip to the beach at Formby, or walk along the canal in Burscough, or even check out Martin Mere which will soon be home to some fantastic new features. My head is very much getting geared up for the encroaching summer months, and I’m sure many of you are hoping for a warm and sunny British summer too. A girl can dream. See you next time!

Pothole

plans

Lancashire County Council’s new machines could fix 60 potholes a day. A new innovative method will be used by the council to speed up pothole repairs following major damage from the cold, wet winter. An average of 60 repairs a day can be made with the new machines, substantially increasing the council’s ability to fix potholes. The county council has budgeted £23m for maintenance to Lancashire’s roads in 2018/19, with around £10m of this set aside to fix potholes and carry out minor repairs. And the council will also receive a further £2.4m from the national ‘pothole action fund’. County Councillor Andrew Snowden, lead member

for highways and transport, said: “The alternating spells of wet followed by cold weather we’ve had over the winter have created the perfect conditions for potholes to appear. “As the warmer weather arrives and our annual programme of resurfacing begins, I hope people will really see the difference as we deal with the winter damage. “We’ve now have six machines which will be with us until mid-October when the winter weather arrives again.” County Councillor Snowden added: “We are determined to address the problems of potholes and other road defects, which are such a concern for people across Lancashire.”

Rufford

growth? A new housing development could soon fill the land off Oasis Close, Rufford. The proposed development on land to the west of Oasis Close will feature 29 properties (25 houses and four apartments), garages, estate road and related development. Jones Homes (Lancashire) Ltd has outlined that the units will range from two-bedroom properties up to four-bedroom family homes. Neighbours on Sluice Lane and Liverpool Road have been notified of the proposed plans, as well as Consultees including: Lancashire Highway Services; LCC Mineral Safeguarding; Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA). Every new home has been allotted its own secure and private garden together with parking bays. Apartments have sufficient parking and easy access to communal spaces. Open space has been designed to be overlooked by properties to ensure safe use for all residents, and pedestrian routes have been provided through the site. One neighbour stated: “The residents of Oasis Close will be those most affected as many of the houses that make up the new development are positioned in a continuous row. With no plans to include open spaces to break up the mass on existing dwellings along this stretch.” The School Planning Team also contributed concerns: “If the planning application is approved without the required education contribution, LCC would request that the local planning authority confirm how the shortfall of school places, resulting from the development, will be addressed.”

By the

horns

Burscough’s Bull and Dog will soon look completely different thanks to new management. Liverpool Road’s Bull and Dog Inn will reopen under the lease of Sabrina and Richard Tedford. Sabrina said: “We live in Ormskirk but our two lads used to work in the Bull and we used to do the disco karaoke and the pub quiz there so we know the pub well. “The pub will look the same apart from having no pool table. It will be very bright too. “It will have a new play area for kids. I want the pub

to become very family and dog friendly. I also want it to be a place where you all want to come and celebrate your events. “I’m asking for thoughts on what you’d like to see happen daily, weekly, monthly or even one offs. I’m also very keen to keep the history of the pub alive. “When it reopens I want to raise money for a local charity too. “It’s going to be a very family friendly orientated community pub. We’re really excited and looking forward to the challenge! See you all soon” The pub closed in early April to undergo a complete refurbishment before it opens on Thursday, May 3.

Lancashire Lifesavers BBC Radio Lancashire and the North West Ambulance Service are banding together to promote Lancashire Lifesavers, a joint campaign to train 2,500 people across the county to perform CPR. The Lancashire Lifesavers campaign is the brainchild of BBC Radio Lancashire’s political reporter Mike Stevens, who helped to save the life of former county councillor Tony Jones. Lancashire County Council is backing the campaign by investing in lifesaving equipment to be installed across the county. The £30,000 funding will be handed to the North West Ambulance Service who will buy 40 defibrillators to install at a range of community venues over the next six months.

Mike said: “Combining the resources of the BBC with Lancashire County Council and the North West Ambulance Service means we’ll deliver CPR training to every part of Lancashire.” Christopher Hyde, Community Resuscitation Manager for NWAS, added: “The chance of survival is reduced by 10% for every minute without CPR and defibrillation. In the event of a cardiac arrest, dial 999 as soon as possible and our emergency medical dispatcher will give you all the instructions you need.” To be a Lancashire Lifesaver you can sign up for CPR training in Chorley, Preston or other venues. Craft show

returns

The BIG Lancashire Craft Show returns for its fourth year at the Wellington Park Hotel, Leyland. Back by popular demand, Caroline Sowerby of Crafty Events, based in Leyland, will be holding yet another huge craft show on Sunday, May 27, 11am 3pm; which boasts up to 54 indoor stall spaces. In 2016, Caroline, a young mum of two formed Crafty Events after outgrowing Buddhasbeads. Buddhasbeads, established in 2013, was a small home-based business designing beaded jewellery by Caroline. And by 2014, Buddhasbeads expanded into other handmade crafts. The business grew quickly, outgrowing its little name taking a natural path of growth as it developed into Crafty Events, an artisan event service where Caroline now supports other small businesses within the local community.

Crafty Events was a finalist in the Lancashire Tourism Awards 2017, which has only boosted the company and the BIG Lancashire Craft Show. Caroline said: “It’s a nice event in Leyland. Last May we got football from all over the North West including Merseyside, Cumbria, the other side of Manchester. “You find some incredible talent. Crafty Events became a platform for community events, and has drawn it all back to the high street to celebrate community products. It’s fantastic!” If you’d like to see more events in the area, please check out our E2G section on pages 48-50.

Loving I

n this day and age, when all retailers seem to be generic and faceless, it’s great find somewhere a little bit different, and Love It Gallery in Billinge is a unique jewel in the seas of globalisation. In 2015 Winstanley couple Stephanie O’Brien and Ian O’Brien moved their thriving Morpheus Glass business onto the derelict Billinge Garden Centre site and opened the Love It Gallery and Bag & Bean café to complement it on the site. A brave move indeed, and for those well versed in film, it was a real ‘build it and they will come’ moment. Local residents quickly supported the venture and three

years on, the couple now employ 15 staff from the local area to help them manage the site. Love It gallery displays a plethora of original giftware and hand-crafted pieces from designers and craftspeople, and much of the merchandise is exclusive to Love It. Visually, the gallery is extraordinary; high ceilings, original timber frames and exquisite lighting that shows off the attractive merchandise perfectly. The pride of place in the gallery goes to glass art, handcrafted by Morpheus Glass in an on-site workshop, from wall panels and splashbacks to

17 bowls, coaster sets and mirrors. Using pieces of art such as wall panels and/or splashbacks is an innovative way of creating an interior focal point, and if the pieces on show don’t quite fit the bill, you can also commission a piece specially for your home. See www.morpheusglass.co.uk for details or ask in-store. And to round off your visit, why not pop into Bag & Bean café which has quickly established itself as the most popular meeting place for miles around, with its friendly warm welcome and a good selection of handmade sandwiches and soups, accompanied by delicious homemade cakes. For those special occasions, Bag & Bean will serve you a most indulgent afternoon tea! See www.facebook.com/ BagandBean/ for more details. Whether you’re looking for imaginative gifts for your friends and families, a unique signature piece for your home décor plan or an enjoyable get together, do take a trip out to Love It Gallery in Billinge – a unique destination for all the family to enjoy. A rush of T

blood

Niamh Ollerton speaks with the West Lancashire volunteers relieving the strain on our NHS

he NHS has been stretched almost beyond recognition since its creation in 1948, but there’s a group of dedicated volunteer motorcyclists who are trying to change that. The Blood Bikers are helping the NHS by delivering blood, samples, breast milk and equipment between hospitals and the blood bank. I met with Rufford couple Chris and Toni Williams who are hoping to raise awareness for this worthwhile charity. NorthWest BloodBikes Lancashire and Lakes celebrate its sixth anniversary this year. The group has gone from four bikers with an idea to give something back to hundreds of bikers, controllers, fundraisers and supporters who’ve made over 40,000 trips in those six years. In West Lancashire alone there are over 40 riders who are on call every night, all day Saturday, Sunday and every bank holiday. It’s entirely voluntarily funded and nobody takes a penny. But what’s the benefit? The NHS in the NWBB-LL area saves £625,000 a year – money that can be spent improving services elsewhere. Chris joined two years ago and started using his

own bike but now also uses the charity’s bikes. But it’s become a family affair as Chris’ wife Toni is also a fundraiser and the couple’s ‘blood-hound’ Cariad is the group’s mascot. Toni said: “We wanted to raise awareness about the people involved locally. It’s a mixture of people who have their own lives too, so the more people we can get involved the better. I started getting involved when we had the Gingerbread Festival. I made some Ginger Blood Men with the little jackets on and they went down a treat. I made Cariad a jacket, and I’m making other bikers’ dogs some out of old Blood Biker jackets.” “We do fundraising at different shops like Asda in Wigan where we made £1,300 in two days. People are so accommodating and helpful. Fundraising helps to get bike insurance, maintenance of the bikes etc. But Blood Bikers do tend to have their own bikes they fund themselves.” Chris added: “A new bike will cost between £16,000 and £20,000. We have a policy that after so many miles they have to be changed, and they do about

35

30,000 miles a year. It’s not just about the money, we have to make sure people know who the Blood Bikers are, and get more people involved. It gives you a buzz, and I think it keeps you young.” The organisation works seamlessly thanks to dedicated volunteers who take pride in our NHS. I asked Chris if he’d ever received care from a hospital. He said: “Yes and I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t know someone who has had to use our NHS services.” Toni agreed: “And that’s why the Blood Bikers want to give back. A lot of people have been to hospital and have had good experiences. Blood Bikes are a good way to help the hospital”. “On

NYE,

Chris,

me

and Cariad did the 12 hour shift. We would have been together at home anyway, and this way volunteers with young families could be together too. And there are people behind the scenes who don’t get any recognition, like the

controllers who know where the riders are at any given time.” But how difficult is it to become a Blood Biker? Chris said: “To join you have to have been driving for a year, be over 25, show you’re a confident rider, and undergo assessment rides by professional motorcycle instructors. Above all else we have a duty of care, as it’s more important we get the

36 samples to where they need to be. It’s at our discretion to take a run, as riders have to be safe too”. “Controllers take calls from the hospital and manage the logistics. As soon as the rider picks up from the Pathology laboratory, they text the controller, and let them know how many samples we’ve got so everything is accounted for. We always try to have at least two riders on a shift, and follow set routes so if anyone goes missing people know where to look.” Chris added, “We can cover the whole country by relay and there was a recent run from Scotland to Oxford where samples were rushed down as everyone was ready for an urgent ride. If the temperature goes below 4 degrees C, riders use

their cars, because it isn’t safe to travel on the roads, and it’s too cold for blood samples.” “Chris said: “Every month I do about two shifts usually on a weekend and they’re usually 12 hours. You’ve got to be available.” Over the Easter period, it wasn’t only Easter chicks that were being born and the Blood Bikers were busy running from Ormskirk with samples for the hatchlings in the maternity ward and fledglings in Ormskirk Children’s A&E. Chris continued: “The volunteers are fantastic, like Brenda for example. She’s over 80 and still does six hour shifts on the controls. She’s one of those people who is the backbone of the organisation. Our numbers are increasing, we’re recognised nationally, and we’re able to do more. Everyone involved has the interests of the charity at heart.” Upcoming fundraising events include a Steam and Vintage Vehicle Rally at Leisure Lakes, Mere Brow, Tarleton on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29; a 1000+ mile 24hr ride on June 16/17 from Preston all the way to Wick and back; and there will also be a Tea Party on Sunday, July 1 at Whittle-le-Woods village hall. n England, one in six people will have a stroke in their lifetime. And in the UK, strokes occurs approximately 152,000 times a year – that’s one every 3 minutes 27 seconds. First-time incidence of stroke occurs almost 17 million times a year worldwide; one every two seconds. It is estimated around 30% of people who have a stroke will go on to experience another. Strokes are a leading cause of death and disability in the UK, with around 32,000 stroke-related deaths in England each year. Most people who have strokes are over 65, but one in four strokes happen in younger people. That’s nearly 40,000 people a year including several hundred children. There’s no denying that a stroke can be fatal, but it’s worth noting there are over 1.2 million stroke survivors in the UK.

It’s important to act quickly as you could save your own or someone else’s life, or help limit the longterm effects of strokes, by learning to think and Act F.A.S.T. What is a stroke? A stroke is a brain attack. It happens when the blood supply to part of your brain is cut off. Without blood your brain cells can be damaged or die. This damage can have different effects, depending on where it happens in your brain.

Photos courtesy of the Stroke Association

Deaths related to strokes have declined by 49% in the past 15 years, and this is down to better prevention, earlier treatment and more advanced treatment.

41 A stroke can affect the way your body works as well as how you think, feel and communicate. What causes a stroke? As we age, our arteries become harder and narrower and are more likely to become blocked. But, some medical conditions and lifestyle factors can speed up this process and increase your risk. Different types of stroke Most strokes are caused by a blockage cutting off the blood supply to the brain. This is an ischaemic stroke. But they can also be caused by a bleeding in or around the brain. This is a haemorrhagic stroke. A transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is also known as a mini-stroke. It’s the same as a stroke, except symptoms only last for a short amount of time, as the blockage stopping the blood getting to your brain is temporary.

Why act F.A.S.T?

Speech – is their speech slurred?

Sudden memory loss or confusion;

Purple May And to raise awareness for this worthwhile cause, it’s time to Make May Purple – Go Purple for Pounds during the Stroke Association’s annual awareness month. Friends, families and communities are invited to show their support for people who have been affected by a stroke.

At home Invite your friends round for a purple dinner and have purple food and drink. Get everyone to wear purple and play purple games. The possibilities are endless. Tony Rudd, National Clinical Director for Stroke with NHS England and stroke physician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Thanks to improved NHS care, stroke survival is now at record high levels. “Urgent treatment for strokes is essential, so friends and family can play a key part in making sure their loved ones receive care as quickly as possible.” Juliet Bouverie, CEO of the Stroke Association, said: “As the UK’s leading stroke charity, we have said time and again that stroke devastates lives in an instant.

The Stroke Association helps stroke survivors regain their independence, but they need our help. All you need to do is wear purple and every penny raised will help provide support for stroke survivors. Wear purple to work, school or outside in your community – wherever you are, the association hopes you’ll turn all your activities purple during May. Every purple event you take part in will really make a difference to stroke survivors. Go purple at work Get everyone to dress in purple for the day and even host a purple bake sale. At school Get the whole school to dress in purple for the day, or turn your sports day into a purple extravaganza. There could even be purple activities for parents too!

“Almost two thirds of stroke survivors leave hospital with a disability, but it doesn’t have to be this way. “The faster you seek and receive emergency specialist treatment for stroke, the better your chances of making a good recovery. Knowing the signs of stroke and being able to Act FAST could save a life – your life.” If you’d like to find out more about the Stroke Association and get involved, please visit https:// www.stroke.org.uk/

Burscough

Bridge A

ccording to www.lancashire.gov.uk, 71% of the North West’s fruit and vegetables are grown in the West Lancashire area and it is those flat fertile fields that we visit today on our latest Jack’s Tracks, which clocked in at just over 6 miles long. Most unusually for a village, Burscough has not one, but two railway stations, and it is from the Burscough Bridge station that the walk starts. Go north of the station on the A59 and turn left into Red Cat Lane. Within 75 yards turn left into the road

by Chris Pearce leading to the old station house. There, on the right, lies the pathway that eventually leads to Martin Mere; this is the path you need. The path soon opens up and runs alongside the railway line for a further 600 yards until you arrive at Crabtree Lane. Turn right and within a minute or so you’ll see a yellow girder set in the ground next to a track. Turn left down the track which soon opens up into a field; stay on the right hand boundary of the field.

52 Once you reach the fence which encloses Monk’s Farm, bear left and then follow the fence round a right hand bend until you reach a fingerpost. Take a 90 degree left turn towards Martin Mere and walk the 750 yards across the big open fields to Marsh Moss Lane. Cross the single track lane and go through the fence directly opposite. Follow the path to another fingerpost, in front of the metal fence enclosing the Martin Mere estate and turn left though the gate with a ‘Caution Deep Water’ sign on it. It’s very noticeable that the noise

beds until I come to a track. Cross the track to the secondary pathway opposite and go through the gate; bear right and cross the stream and then take an immediate right down a slight gradient. Follow that path past the ponds and then once you’ve rounded a right hand bend you’ll arrive at another fingerpost. JOBS FOR MAY • Harden off your half-hardy plants by leaving them outside during the day and bring them back under cover at night for about a week before planting them out.

Get the front of your house ship-shape by creating some beautiful hanging baskets. The varieties available now are wide—small or large baskets are available with differing styles that you can plant up either from the top only or all the way round to create a ‘ball’. Make sure you use good quality compost and add some slow release fertiliser and water retaining crystals which will make the baskets so much easier during the summer months.

• Divide your Hostas as they come into growth. • Take cuttings of tender Geraniums or Fuchsia.

perennials

such

• Let the foliage of spring flowering bulbs die down naturally. Don’t be tempted to cut down or tie it up. • Watch out for signs of blackspot on roses. Treat with a systemic fungicide as soon as you spot any. • Continue to weed the beds and borders.

TOP TIP If you want to create an avalanche of colour around your hanging basket then you’ll need one a minimum size of 38cm. You can buy a basket with cut outs already in the sides to make planting up easier. Don’t be tempted by the smaller, cheaper baskets as they’ll dry out within hours during hot weather.

Test Drive

DS

7 Crossback by Tim Barnes-Clay

T

im Barnes-Clay, is back from his latest car launch. This time he was invited to Windsor

to sample the all-new DS 7 Crossback. At first sight, the DS 7 Crossback shows off conservative, rather than cool, characteristics. Yes, yes, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But this is my opinion, and someone needs to have one. On the move, body lean is kept to a minimum, even though the steering is spongy and dead - and it isn’t perked up by changing the DS into its Sport mode. Don’t let me rain on the DS7 Crossback’s parade

58 too much, though. The French motor is best kept in its Comfort setting, so that you can make the most of its respectable ride quality. This car isn’t all about the zero to 62mph sprint, it’s far happier as a laid-back cruiser. But it can still pull okay, with the 2.0-litre diesel model doing the 0-62mph in just under 10 seconds. The DS marque is launching the Crossback with four different trim levels, and the Performance Line DS 7, as driven here, is likely to be the model to please the masses. This car gets 19-inch alloys, a gloss black grille, and LED lights. In the cabin, leather and Alcantara abound, while a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment screen hogs the limelight. Playing second fiddle to the big display is a large analogue clock, perched above the ignition button.

The infotainment system itself is intuitive and responsive and is supported by a bunch of touch sensitive switches for the cabin controls. But more remarkable in this car segment is the adding of an infrared night vision camera that projects a vivid picture onto the driver’s display. It picks out pedestrians and animals ahead of you, and, as I found out driving around Berkshire’s unlit backroads, it works! The only drawback is that the clever driver aid is an option costing £1600. Room in the cabin is good for five-up and it’s a very comfortable car fore and aft. Indeed, the DS 7 Crossback’s flat floor means that a rear seat occupant sitting in the middle will still have space. What’s more, the car’s boot is generously proportioned with 555 litres of cargo capacity. The all-new DS’ weak point is its price-tag. At over £30,000, other more established premium brands may seem more attractive. The BMW X3 and Volvo XC40 are examples of the stiff competition the upto-the-minute French machine is up against. Still, being different is quite appealing, so it’ll be interesting to see what 2018 holds for the DS 7 Crossback. Watch this space!
