ummer has much to commend it. The gardens always look their best, the sun (when we see it) is at its warmest and there’s a plethora of outdoor events. Having got in the mood by watching Glastonbury on the TV, I pondered on whether to get tickets to a similar music festival. Back in the day, there were only a few festivals but now there are literally hundreds, covering everything from heavy metal to acoustic sounds. My first ever festival was a bit of an eye-opener. Apart from the lashing down rain and omnipresent smell of chemical toilets, I was struck by the sheer number of hawkers who were ready to pounce on unsuspecting teens. One man tried to sell me wet joss sticks about a fiver a packet. His mystical attire included what suspiciously resembled an old duvet cover over his shoulders with the CND logo sprayed on it. Needless to say, I didn’t find any need for joss sticks, but wished him well as he headed to the next group of university freshmen. Not that this has put me off so, soon, me and my other half shall be heading down south for some live music al fresco. Maybe I’ll catch up with my old mate in the duvet cover. I’m sure by now he’ll have updated his stock with the latest must-haves. So if I start droning on about fidget spinners in the next edition, you’ll know where I’ve got it from...

considerately in Halsall. The parish council says cars parking either side of Summerwood Lane at school times and when funerals and weddings are taking place at St Cuthbert’s are causing an obstruction. People are asked to use the Memorial Hall car park whenever possible. There have also been reports of near misses in Shirdley Hill as a result of cars parking on or close to bends. Residents are now being encouraged not to do this, even if their vehicle is parked partially on a pavement.

Radiology ‘resilience’ worry Ormskirk Hospital bosses have raised concerns over resilience if there is another cyber attack. A report to the Southport & Ormskirk NHS Trust board said there were “particular concerns” about its radiology equipment during the major incident in May. This has now been flagged up with NHS England. The report also revealed the extent of the disruption to staff and patients: “The Trust was functioning entirely on paper without the support of a number

of essential clinical systems. Throughout the entire period the Trust protected the A&E department and the emergency and urgent elective surgery lists to ensure patient safety. The Trust has already begun a process of learning lessons from the major incident. During the major incident there were particular concerns about the resilience of radiology equipment and regional contingencies to support single points of failure. This concern has been fed to NHS England with the suggestion that a specific session be held to consider radiology resilience and contingency from a Cheshire and Merseyside perspective.”

Bowlers see red over green Bowling clubs are objecting to the demolition of Westhead’s Halton Castle pub. The Wigan Road site, which dates back to the 1840s, could be used for 10 new homes if an application from GM2 Ltd is successful. The building has been empty since last year and considered by some to be an eyesore. However, local bowling clubs have reacted angrily to the proposals. Michael Radcliffe, chairman of the Ormskirk & District Bowling League, has written to West Lancs Borough Council’s planners to highlight his fears: “The bowling green is not disused and the applicant promised to make arrangements to replace the

bowling green on an alternative site. This facility is vital to the local community in Westhead and the surrounding area.” David Barker, captain of Burscough RBL Bowling Team, has also written to the council: “We can fully appreciate that the pub itself has perhaps reached the stage where it is no longer viable and as such can accept there may well be a case for change of use but the bowling green will be yet another sad loss of an amenity to the local community.” And Ormskirk Bowling Club secretary Ian Gill’s letter to the council said: “The club respectfully requests that the application be refused unless alternative adequate bowling green provision be provided, or, as an alternative, improvements are made to existing facilities in agreement with the Halton Castle Bowling Club.”

A Bickerstaffe nursery has been rated ‘good’ by Ofsted. Inspectors said that Bickerstaffe Lodge, at Bickerstaffe CE Primary School, Hall Lane, has energetic and motivated staff who “enthuse children’s interest and excitement to learn.” A report by Inspector Cath Palser said: “Staff are good role models and help each child to be kind and considerate to others. Children form a close bond with staff and develop a growing understanding of behavioural expectations. Children of all ages sit together during social occasions, such as lunchtimes. Older children help younger ones with routines. Their independence is promoted well. Children take care of their own belongings when they arrive. They are eager to manage small tasks, such as tidying away their toys. Children’s selfmotivation, physical and emotional well-being are nurtured well. They develop a growing confidence in their own abilities and enjoy sharing their achievements together.”

Win tickets to Southport

flower show! W

ith its fabulous floral displays, celebrity gardeners and top family entertainment, there are always so many reasons to visit the Southport Flower Show. And this summer, lucky readers of Local Life could also be strolling into the annual event completely free of charge. We have THREE pairs of tickets to give away to the show, which has been held at the same seaside venue in Southport for over 80 years. More than 50,000 people visited the event last year and Southport is the biggest independent flower show in the UK, attracting amateur growers and gardeners from around the country. This year’s Southport Flower Show runs from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th August. Many of Britain’s best-known gardening experts from TV and radio are on hand to offer guidance, tips and advice at the show. This year’s line-up of garden stars includes Christine Walkden, Carol Klein, David Domoney, Matthew Wilson and Professor Stefan Buczacki.

11

In the Grand Floral Marquee, there are more than a million blooms on display and there are a series of amateur growers’ competitions throughout the show, but the event is far more than just a gathering for gardeners with a packed programme of entertainment to delight visitors of all ages. Kids go free (with an accompanying adult) at the Southport Flower Show, and this year they will be treated to performances by children’s TV favourites Justin Fletcher and Mr Bloom. Justin Fletcher stars on CBeebies as Mr Tumble in Something Special and also features as himself in Justin’s House. He will headline the family show on Saturday 19th August. Mr Bloom is played by performer Ben Faulks in the CBeebies show Mr Bloom’s Nursery and returns to Southport on Sunday 20th August after entertaining audiences at last year’s show. Another popular attraction at Southport is the food village which features top chefs showing their skills in the demonstration kitchen. And for older visitors interested in home improvements, TV presenter and professional ‘upcycler’ Max McMurdo will share his unique design expertise. Max starred in ‘How to Live Mortgage Free with Sarah Beeney’ on Channel 4, and will park up in his mobile workshop inside a converted double decker bus to show guests how they can turn household junk into quirky home treasures.

The Southport Flower Show takes place at the 36acre Victoria Park, which is right beside the coastline sand dunes and a short walk away from Southport town centre. The theme for this year’s show is the ‘Curious Garden’ with organisers aiming to showcase the sense of wonder and discovery that inspires all gardeners as they unravel the mysteries of the natural world. General Manager Ray Roukin said: “We are delighted to welcome all our famous guests to this year’s Southport Flower Show and we know our visitors will be thrilled to see them. “Families have always enjoyed coming to the Southport Flower Show and this year our line-up of children’s entertainment will be better than ever.” To win a pair of tickets to Southport Flower Show, just visit our website www.locallife247.co.uk, click on the ‘Free Stuff’ tab and then click on ‘Competitions’. Online readers can click on the following link http:// locallife247.co.uk/free-stuff/competitions/. Just answer this question; What is the theme for this year’s Southport Flower Show? Your answer must be with us by 12 noon on Friday 11th August 2017, and winners will be notified that same afternoon. Details of the competition winners will be publicised in our October magazine. Closure plan countered Controversial plans to close Ormskirk Police Station to the public have been criticised. The proposal, which was first mooted over five years ago but shelved, has come from Lancashire’s elected Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw. If passed, it means that the nearest station would be in Skelmersdale. A report into the proposal claimed there are fewer than four people visiting the station per day - the

second lowest in the hit list of stations primed for front desk closures. However, local MP Rosie Cooper hit out at the idea: “This decision marks a worrying trend in the treatment of those who live in West Lancashire. This is the thin edge of the wedge. How long before the police are talking about the closure of the station? “There are questions that need to be answered. Residents need a fully operational Police Force where they can speak directly to the Police, not an answerphone.”

David Sudworth meets the Bickerstock work experience helper who now works with international stars

I

t’s been a busy year for Mike Durgan. He’s flown across the world and been part of Little Mix’s, Aleisha Dixon’s and the Foo Fighters’ lighting crew.

With the UK music festival season due to kick off in earnest, it’s likely to be a busy time for Mike. But for one week in August, there’s only one place he’s planning to be. “Bickerstock gave me the opportunities, so I always come back and help out. I don’t take any work on for that week,” Although just 21, the Ormskirk resident has made his mark in an industry which is not only notoriously competitive, but also hierarachical. “You do get a few people who find it difficult to be told what to do by someone who is younger. There is a sort of ‘earning your stripes’ thing but I just sort of get on with it .”

17 Now in its 14th year, Bickerstock has become one of West Lancashire’s biggest events. Each August, scores of people from across the area descend in the Parish Field to hear live bands. Mike got involved with Bickerstock five years ago: “I just sort of became involved, and it was really good experience. It’s a great couple of days and to be honest, if it wasn’t for Bickerstock, I probably wouldn’t be doing this.”

“This is all thanks to Bickerstock” After leaving full-time education, Mike studied at Liverpool Community College before accepting an apprenticeship with a lighting company where he learned audio-visual basics. After a year, he moved to a larger events company where he got a taste of bigger venues. He eventually went freelance two years ago, and hasn’t looked back.

18 “I’ve done lighting for The Foo Fighters, Little Mix and Aleisha Dixon. I’ve also worked on the Parklife festival at Heaton Park, Manchester.” While it all sounds glamorous, Mike admits there is a huge amount of work which goes on behind the scenes. “It’s the old saying that you never see the show after the show. Sometimes, I’ve had to work through the night to be everything ready, then it can take a long time to pack everything away as well. Sometimes, you’re talking three days afterwards, “There is a lot of pressure but mostly that comes from yourself, and wanting to do the best you can. “I treat the artists just the same as everyone else.”

“There’s a lot of pressure to do a good job” With Mike’s connections and know-how, it means that, for its size, Bickerstock benefits from some high-end equipment. “When I started, it was just four little lights on a rig in a marquee,” he laughs. Mike spends a lot of time travelling these days, although he’s always glad to get back home.

“I like being on the road, but I’m not sure my girlfriend would agree! “When we’re on the road, I’m pretty much the youngest but that doesn’t bother me.” So does Mike have any tips for others who aspire to work in the entertainment industry. “Go to college and study. There’s a lot of opportunities out there but don’t be afraid to ask someone if you can help them out - it worked for me!” Indeed it did, and there’s even opportunities to help Mike out at Bickerstock. The festival has issued an appeal for volunteers - anyone who is interested should contact organisers via www.bickerstock.org This year’s festival takes place on August 5 and 6 details of the line-up are now being finalised. For Mike, it’s a home gig in more ways than one: “I really enjoy it. It’s a time when I can catch up with friends. And there’s always some good acts on!”

Garry explains “The internet is a fantastic selling tool, but we have found that some customers would rather physically try out prams, car seats and nursery furniture before they buy, so that’s why we’ve opened the showroom”. David has 20 years’ experience in the nursery industry and can offer great advice on products, “We want customers to know that we will match or beat any price from any reputable retailer. We want customers to be aware that we are not just another company, we are a family, and it’s not only just about selling a product, it’s about the personal service we offer”. ave you heard of TMS? It stands for transcranial magnetic stimulation and, according to reports, could offer hope to people with clinical depression when other treatments haven’t helped. It was invented in Sheffield the Eighties and has been used to treat a number of mental and physical health conditions, including OCD, anorexia, tinnitus and fibromyalgia - but studies suggest up to 70% of people with clinical depression could benefit from it. Treatments usually centre around talking therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and antidepressant medicines. For severe depression that hasn’t improved with other treatments, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), where an electric current is applied to the brain under general anaesthetic, is sometimes used. Though generally believed to be effective, ECT is associated with a number of side-effects, including causing seizures and memory loss, as well as being traumatic. “TMS is a much more acceptable intermediary treatment between medication and ECT,” says consultant psychiatrist Dr Leigh Neal, medical director of the Smart TMS clinic in London (www.smarttms.co.uk). “It involves a sea change of how we’ll treat people in the future and the outcomes for depression.”

31 HOW DOES IT WORK? TMS simply involves a magnetic head, which converts electricity into a magnetic field, being placed against the scalp. The magnetic field sets up electrical circuits in the brain, affecting only a tiny area. The region of the brain targeted depends on the condition being treated - for depression, it’s the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), where there’s reduced activity in people with the condition. Although deeper parts of the brain are also involved in depression, all the areas are connected and the DLPFC is the only accessible part. “Scans find that the beneficial effects of TMS propagate through to the deeper areas, so all the depression circuit is beneficially affected,” says Dr Neal, who explains the electrical stimulation causes changes within the brain related to chemicals and neuroplasticity (the ability of neurons to connect to each other). “It causes more connectivity between nerves in the

brain, an increase in the amount of neural activity, and an increase in the amount of neurotransmitters like serotonin.” One treatment lasts about 40 minutes, and is given daily for between 10 and 30 sessions. WHO CAN HAVE TMS? TMS was approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of depression in December 2015. It’s not considered a treatment for temporary low mood, however; rather clinical depression diagnosed by a GP or psychiatrist, and mainly for people who’ve had at least two courses of antidepressants (NICE recommends patients are offered treatment such as CBT and/or antidepressants first).

32 It’s not suitable for everybody - people who have metal in their head for instance, such as metal clips after brain surgery, can’t have TMS - but side-effects are believed to be minimal. Dr Neal says the treatment creates “a funny electrical feeling” on the scalp, which quickly becomes virtually unnoticeable. There’s a very slight risk of convulsions (the equivalent to one in 30,000 TMS sessions), and a small possibility of some discomfort such as a headache at the treatment site, felt by 5-10% of patients. Currently, it’s only available on the NHS in Northampton, though other NHS Trusts are considering introducing it. There are three private clinics in London that offer it (for around £200 a session), and a handful scattered around the UK. SO HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT? Any effect of TMS on depression is gradual, and Dr Neal admits there are some people for whom it doesn’t work at all.

Dr Leigh Nea However, trials show a recovery or remission rate after TMS of 30-40%, and another 30% get a substantial reduction in symptoms. “So you’re talking about 60-70% getting some beneficial effect, and 30-40% of them making a full recovery,” he says. NICE warns that the clinical response varies, but there are a lot of good outcomes. A review of 40 randomised controlled trials, including 1,592 patients with depression treated by repetitive TMS or sham stimulation, showed a significant effect in favour of TMS. Patient responses were positive, describing significant benefits to their quality of life, including stopping antidepressants. Dr Neal notes that people become more positive, motivated, communicative and sociable after a course of TMS: “You’re not just seeing a reduction in mood, you’re seeing people brighten up and become more energised - a qualitative difference you don’t see with antidepressants.” Dr Alex O’Neill-Kerr from the Royal College of Psychiatrists says: “For some patients, TMS can be a life-changing treatment. Around 30% of patients who have this treatment report having no symptoms of depression afterwards, while others say their depressive symptoms are significantly reduced. “We hope to see TMS offered by the NHS, as we know that current treatment for resistant depression costs twice as much and is not proven to be more effective.”

pparently, Nathan Outlaw still can’t quite master the art of roasting a chicken.

This is a man who has a two Michelin star restaurant, was mentored by Rick Stein and has written four cookery books. And he can’t roast a chicken?! “It always turns out differently every time,” says the Kent-born, Cornwall-based chef, with a laid-back, self-deprecating laugh. Don’t be taken in; Outlaw can handle chicken, he just doesn’t do carbon copy, identikit chickens - but when you’re best known for your seafood, who cares? His latest book then, Home Kitchen, is something of a detour. “I wanted to write a book that covered all the bases if you had no other cookery book - a book that had all the recipes you needed for life.” It features some fish, of course, but is also packed with nostalgic classics like toad-in-the-hole, soups, risottos, how to do a proper Sunday roast (yes, chicken included), plus desserts - including his daughter’s sticky toffee pudding - which is to be expected when Outlaw’s last-night-on-earth meal is, without question, trifle. Throughout the writing process, he had his children (Jacob and Jessica) in mind, imagining the kind of cookbook they’ll need when, eventually, they go off to university or college. “If they took this one book,” he says, “there’d be enough in there for them to survive.” After honing his filleting skills alongside Gary Rhodes and Stein, at just 25 - an age that doesn’t seem quite so young when you consider he was cooking for paying customers at 14 - Outlaw launched his first restaurant, The Black Pig. Within a year, he was also a first-time dad (to son Jacob) and the recipient of a Michelin star.

35 According to online food publisher Great British Chefs’ recent survey of 5,000 foodies, people are becoming increasingly adventurous when it comes to the foods and ingredients they’re willing to try. Outlaw says he can definitely see that culinary confidence reflected in his restaurants. However, while people are more experimental ordering off a menu, “there’s a lot more work to be done at home”. “It’s difficult, because I think sometimes people end up at fish counters and supermarket meat counters, and they go with the safe option they know. I do understand that,” says Outlaw. “The excuse I used to get was, ‘I can’t eat any fish because I live in [landlocked] Oxford’, but now you can get fish on your doorstep at home as quick as I can get it into my restaurant. Keen to dive in and cook some fish? Try one of these Outlaw recipes at home (Recipes courtesy of Great British Chefs. For more inspiration, visit www. greatbritishchefs.com)...

Taste Test

Fire up the

Quattro’s B

ack in the 1980s, Audi’s new Quattro model was synonymous with style and speed. A few years ago, its popularity was rekindled in the TV cop show Ashes To Ashes. Unlike the car, Quattro’s Itailian Ristorante has never fallen out of fashion. Started in 1997, it has been a constant byword for authentic cuisine, stylish surroundings and very friendly, helpful staff. My colleague Lisa joined me at the restaurant, located just off the Rainford Bypass, for a lunchtime meal recently. The first thing which hits you as you enter is the fabulous aromas emanating from the kitchen. The reception bar area is stylish and the staff are very chatty and approachable. For starters, I had the Antipasto, a selection of Italian cured meats, cheese, bread and olives. Although a fairly standard dish, the taste was anything but that. Top marks to the olives, which were plump and flavoursome. I also loved the gently roasted peppers which accompanied them. Italy may be known for pasta and pizza, but their love and devotion to bringing vegetables into their own is a lesser-heralded triumph. Lisa’s Burrata E Prosciutto - a creamy Mozzarella cheese with Parma ham drizzled with truffle oil - was wonderfully refreshing. The tomatoes gave the dish an added lift, and you could definitely see yourself eating this on a hazy evening as the sun sets over the Bay of Naples.

37 My mains, Filleto Monte Mare, was, on the face of it, a straightforward surf and turf. However, the steak - cooked rare as ordered - transformed it into a real carnivore’s dream. The king prawns also lived up to their name, provided some lovely seafood to the dish. Lisa opted for the Pollo Quattro’s - chicken breast with mushrooms, garlic, peppers, shallots and fresh chillies in a white wine and tomato sauce. Once again, top marks to the tenderness of the chicken. So many times, you go to a restaurant to find a piece of rubber hiding below a beautiful sauce. At Quattro’s, the elements were equal partners in a dish which was truly bellisimo. For desserts, there was only really one choice for me. Italy is famous for its ice creams, so I had strawberry and chocolate. It was less creamy than traditional English ices, but that’s no bad thing as it allowed the favours to stand on their own. Lisa went for the chocolate fudge cake and, like me, wasn’t disappointed with her choice. A lovely end to a fine meal. Quattro’s has been around for 20 years now, and they’ve adapted to changing eating habits while staying true to their Italian heritage. The staff are magnificent - one even wrote down the name of his hometown and implored me to visit it if I ever had a spare day in Sicily.

I’m not sure if I’ll make it to Italy, let alone its islands, any time soon. But with Quattro’s just around the corner, I’m not sure there’s much need to... Quattro’s Ormskirk, Rainford Road, Bickerstaffe, Ormskirk, Lancashire, L39 0HF Tel : 01695 720800

little research beforehand can make even the most seemingly average walk very interesting. For this trek though, I had a local tour guide – my colleague Peter who prowls this parish on a regular basis. Peter, who doubles as our fearless cameraman, was born in this part of Wigan and, as a boy, it was literally his playground. The mere fact he is still around 50-odd years on to tell the tale is miraculous given some of his escapades in the local highways and byways. We parked up at Red Rock car park on Red Rock Lane. Apparently, this used to be the railway yard of the old Red Rock Station. Leaving the car park, we headed back to the main road, turned right

and headed down Red Rock Brow. On reaching the bottom of the hill, we crossed over to the other side of Chorley Road, going left towards Wigan. After about 100 yards you come to a public footpath on your right. Follow this up through the trees, out across the meadow and over the foot bridge that spans the West Coast Main Line. It’s a busy old route and if you stick around for a few minutes, you’re bound to see at least one loco. Once across the bridge, follow the road along the side of the railway until it reaches Fairhurst Lane. At this point turn right and head up the lane for about 20 yards, then take the path on your left which climbs up into a meadow, which was, up until 1959, Victoria Colliery.

41 Keeping to the left, follow the path round until it splits, taking the path that leads off through the trees and out onto Lordy Close. Form here go left and follow the road out onto Water Drive, which you continue along to Chorley Road. Go right along Chorley Road until you reach the roundabout at Boars Head, where you cross Wigan Road (A49). Having crossed Wigan Road (A49), you go right for about 100 yards, at which point you turn left into Gidlow Cemetery. As we ambled through, we passed the final resting place of renowned artist Lawrence Isherwood. A friend of L.S. Lowry, Isherwood was one of those artists whose stock has risen immeasurably since his death from cancer in 1989. Collectors of his works include Prince Charles. We followed the road through to the other end of the cemetery, then turned left, eventually leaving the cemetery through a small gateway. Here you go left and follow the path round to the bridge which brings you to Walter Scott Avenue. Quite why the road is named after the Scottish novelist, playwright and poet is a bit of a mystery. As

far as one can tell, he had no direct links to Wigan. If you happen to know, do drop us a line. Go left up the road to its junction with Wigan Lane, where you cross over the main road and go right. After about 150 yards you’ll come to a pathway on your left named Sicklefield. Take this path and follow it down past Sicklefield House, down the

43 64 steps, then left across the footbridge over the River Douglas and out onto Wingates Road. Here you go left and follow the road, which leads into Pendlebury Lane. Heading up the lane you pass under the viaduct that once carried the L&NWR, Lancashire Union line, Standish Loop. Continuing up the lane, you pass open fields before reaching the LeedsLiverpool Canal. Here you take the path on the left, down onto the canal towpath. On the opposite bank you’ll see a lovely little garden with massive Gunnera plants on either side of it. Continue along the towpath taking in to views until you reach the bridge at Red Rock.

Here you cross over the road and head down the hill and back to the car park. A lovely little walk in a part of Wigan which really only the locals know. Most people who visit the town tend to retrace George Orwell’s footsteps. So for a change, why not follow Jack’s paw prints on this four and a half mile stroll? 3008

Peugeot SUV 1.2 GT Line

I

t is not unusual to see some big changes between an older and newer generation of the same model, but the all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV looks radically different to the outgoing one. That exiting generation, introduced in 2008, was a frumpy, chubby SUV that did little to inspire buyers. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV, though, is a different animal, burying the clumsy image of the last car sixfeet under and achieving the European Car of the Year crown. Sometimes it can be difficult to separate SUVs out on the road because most of them drive alike. Many are set up for comfort, and that’s what the all-new 3008 is tuned for. The small steering wheel and light handling gives a feeling of sprightliness, even if that’s not the case, as it’s a tall, heavy car. However; that’s not a complaint, the designers and engineers have done a good job covering the traditional flaws of an SUV’s dynamics.

by Tim Barnes-Clay

There’s a wholesome medley of engines on offer, as with most Peugeot models: two petrol’s in the shape of a 131PS 1.2-litre unit and a 165PS 1.6-litre turbo. Then there are a couple of turbo diesel engines of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre capacity. What suits you best is largely going to depend on what sort of driving you do. Short urban trips suit the 1.2-litre petrol more, whereas longer journeys will fit the potential 70mpg obtainable from the 1.6-litre diesel. I drove the 1.2 petrol in GT Line spec with 131PS, fitted with a manual gearbox. Behind the wheel, things feel dynamic, and the weighting of the steering is spot on. The car grips bitumen like a cat’s claws cling to flesh, and mid-range pulling power is good, so you can pick up the pace easily. The six-speed transmission is slick shifting, and the car delivers a hushed ride. Tyre roar and wind whistle is kept out of the cabin, too. All this just adds to the 3008’s sense of refinement.

45 The 1.2 GT Line’s average fuel consumption of 55.4mpg and 117g/km of CO2 means low running costs, combined with effective performance. 0-62mph is achieved in 10.8 seconds and the Pug’s maximum speed is 117mph.

The Peugeot offers a composed ride with seats that provide the sort of comfort and support required for long distance motoring. Furthermore, the car’s suspension sops up potholes without complaining. Significantly, the all-new 3008 doesn’t tip into bends. Indeed, body roll is very well contained. This surprised me, as smaller SUVs aren’t always the type of vehicle to stay so unflustered on twisty tarmac. The new 3008 comes in four levels of trim: Active, Allure, GT Line and GT. Factory fitted safety kit includes automatic emergency braking and rear parking sensors. The GT Line hasn’t got any extra safety equipment - just sportier looks. But it has all the safety kit you really need, and as with all 3008s, it has a top five-star Euro NCAP safety score. A car can look great and have all the equipment in the world crammed into it – but it’s no good if it isn’t economical and it doesn’t drive decently. There are no concerns to be had in this area with the 3008 SUV.

Fast Facts • 0-62 mph: 10.8 secs • Combined mpg: 55.4 • Engine layout: 1199cc 3-cylinder turbo petrol • Max. power (PS): 131

The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV’s entry price is £21,795, but expect to fork out £25,655 for the petrol-powered GT Line I drove. A basic Nissan Qashqai costs £18,545, and the new SEAT Ateca is priced from £17,990. But I think the 3008’s extra cost is justified because it feels more upmarket inside than these two rivals. Cabin materials include brushed chrome, large areas of carbon decoration and textiles. They even cover some areas less commonly found in SUVs, such as the dashboard inlay. It’s all very contemporary and attractive. The Peugeot is just as stylish outside, and it drives well, while delivering a comfortable ride for all.
