I for one am at my happiest when the days are warmer and we have a little sunshine, and for the most part, I think the people I pass when out on a walk share this heightened sense of happiness with me. The summer is the time to get outside whether that’s sitting in the garden, going for an adventure on our bikes, or even attending a festival. And the joy of attending a festival in Britain is come rain or shine we get stuck in and have a ball. Take Bickerstock 2018 for example. On the weekend of August 4 and August 5, the 15th annual festival will bring Bickerstaffe to life once more. There’ll be local talent performing – both old and new – delicious food on the barbecue, and of course friends and families together enjoying the festival experience. Now I’m not saying we don’t deserve an evening or two to relax and catch up on our favourite TV shows, or binge-watching some brand new ones. But I hope you’ll join me in having an adventure in the great outdoors too, because summer only lasts a season after all. See you next time.

Sacrifice
remembered
West Lancashire honoured the service and sacrifices of the armed forces at a special event. On Monday, June 25, a special event was held in Coronation Park, Ormskirk to commemorate Armed Forces Day. The ceremony was attended by service veterans, Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire Mrs Gail Stanley, the Mayor of West Lancashire Councillor Noel Delaney and Mayoress Ann Stubbert, and councillors and officers. Local uniformed groups also attended. Skelmersdale Prize Band performed from 4.45pm, before the ceremony started at 5pm when Father Godric Timney, the Mayor’s Chaplain said a short prayer.
War memorial at Coronation Park The Ministry of Defence flag was raised at the War Memorial in Coronation Park to the sounds of Skelmersdale Prize Band. Mrs Stanley presented the flag to the Mayor of West Lancashire. Councillor Delaney said: “We are honoured to receive this flag as a tribute to all our Armed Services, who have served in the past and are serving today. “It is with pride that the Borough of West Lancashire shows its support by dedicating this moment to them.” A veteran said: “We have great pride in paying tribute to the men and women who defend Britain. “I hope you will join me in paying homage to our armed forces who serve our country.” The council said: “The Armed Forces Day event was a great success with nearly 100 people attending.” Councillor Noel Delaney, Mayor of West Lancashire, said: “It is very important that we recognise the sacrifices made by veterans and those who are currently serving in our armed forces. I was delighted to see so many people at the event, particularly young people from uniformed groups.”

Luxury in
Lancashire
One of West Lancashire’s restaurants with luxury rooms has made it onto an awards list. Moor Hall in Aughton, made it onto the 2018 Luxury Lifestyle Magazine Readers’ Travel Awards for the UK. It was awarded the number one position as ‘Best Newcomer’ and also made it onto the ‘Best Hotel for Food’ at number 21 and number 30 for ‘Best Hotel for Romance.’ Moor Hall is set in five acres of gardens with views of a lake said to be the remains of a medieval moat. The grade II* listed gentry house of mid-sixteenth century origin was first recorded in 1282 and in 1533. It was acquired by Peter Stanley of Bickerstaffe, who
built the present manor house. Andy & Tracey Bell acquired the site in 2015 and underwent a multi-million pound renovation. With their friend and business partner Mark Birchall, the duo created the restaurant with luxury rooms.

Making an
impression Niamh Ollerton speaks with the Ormskirk man with many voices
“L
ondon is home but Ormskirk is proper home.”
These are the words of celebrity impersonator Jon Culshaw who hasn’t lost sight of his northern roots. The impressionist and comedian’s career in entertainment spans more than 30 years since he landed his first job at Red Rose Radio (now Rock FM) in Preston in 1987. But his true calling was impressionism, and with a catalogue of over 350 voices and impersonations including Boris Johnson, Donald Trump, Professor Brian Cox, Barack Obama,
Alan Carr, and Michael McIntyre, it’s easy to see why. Jon celebrated his 50th birthday this year and so it was only fitting to pick his brain to see how much life has changed since his early life in the market town. But with fondness still in his heart for West Lancashire, Jon bought his Victorian home a decade ago just a few minutes’ drive from where he grew up. Although he divides his time between Lancashire and London, Jon admits: “Ormskirk is my home town, I get back every few weeks. “I still have ties, my siblings, family, friends, everyone is still there. It’s always so rewarding to get back. I lived with my mum and dad, brother Jim and older sister Rosemary on Holborn Hill on the A59, that’s where I grew up. And I went to St Bede’s (High School) where there’s a large statue of the fellow.” In July 2017, Jon returned to St Bede’s for its 60th anniversary extravaganza. The ‘Old Boy’ entertained the guests on stage with his impressions of wellknown characters and even some former teachers.
11 His first Saturday job in 1984, when he was 16, was at a Currys PC World electrical shop in Ormskirk, where he looked after the computer shelf. Proud of his hard work at Currys, Jon kept his tie and badge - and that’s not his only memento, as in his Ormskirk home he still has the Binatone TV game and Galaxy Invader game he bought with his first wage. Now retro classics, he described them as cutting-edge at the time. Jon continued: “From St Bede’s I went to John Rigby Sixth Form, where I got interested in radio and started to volunteer at Ormskirk hospital station. I was constantly sending out demo cassettes, and eventually I got a job on the radio in Preston when I was 19.”
Although Jon landed his first radio gig as a teenager his talent for voices was obvious when he occasionally read the weather in the voice of Frank Bruno.
Jon Culshaw and Bill Dare
12 While working at Capital Radio in 1998, Jon rose to fame by calling the switchboard of No. 10 Downing Street and fooling operators with his William Hague impression. He was put directly through to Prime Minister Tony Blair where they had a lengthy chat. With spells at different radio stations, he continued to do voice over work and his big break came when he landed his slot on Spitting Image – the satirical puppet show – from 1994-1996 where he voiced around 40 characters including John Major. But Jon is best known for his work on the popular Radio Show ‘Dead Ringers,’ he said: “I started working on ‘Dead Ringers’ in 2000 for Radio 4. “That was a chance to really get going. The way the audience took to that show; there hadn’t been anything like that. There was something so naughty about it.” I asked if he had a eureka moment, he said: “I think once I started to do the R4 programmes doing impressions and being invited to do my approach, you start to think things are beginning a wee bit.”
Jon’s been awarded a number of academic awards. He’s received an honorary fellowship from the University of Central Lancashire; an Honorary Doctorate from Edge Hill University; an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Leicester.
Jon Culshaw with George Mathias
Jon said: “It’s a lovely honour, especially from my home town and UCLAN, and the University of Leicester. That was lovely, as Leicester was a city I didn’t come from geographically.”
Currently Jon and Bill Dare (creator of Dead Ringers) are touring the country with their show ‘The Great British Takeoff.’ The duos tour incorporates “an evening of unscripted, unrehearsed, spontaneous comedy and conversation as politicians, sports personalities and celebrities old and new are all up for a roasting.” But what is Jon’s advice to aspiring impressionists like himself? Jon admits: “Lots and lots of practice. Record your voice and really learn your characters. “Try to choose the characters no one else is doing; everywhere you can, do your characters in your own way. Always find your own take.” Jon was quoted saying in the Visiter: “Ormskirk is a town that is very content with itself and when I walk through I still get that same sort of feeling of a sensibility, like I am walking through my childhood memories.” As I thanked Jon for taking some time out of his busy schedule, he signed off with, “It’s good to have a good old natter sometimes isn’t it?”

Cool for It’s that time of the year again... yep, soon the kiddies will be off school for their summer holidays. And as sure as night follows day, by day seven most will have said “I’m bored” at least once. Fear not though - here’s your ever-dependable Local Life to the rescue!
During the school year, it’s hard to find time to bake with the kids, so now is the perfect opportunity to dig out your apron. To inspire you, here are some recipes you can use to keep the little ones from climbing the walls.
Banana Muffins Ingredients
Strawberry Lollies Ingredients
• 200g plain flour • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 350g strawberries
• 3 large mashed bananas
• 4 tbsp strawberry jam
• 150g caster sugar
• 200 ml double cream
• 1 egg
• 6 tbsp Greek yoghurt
• 75g melted butter
Method
Method
Take the tops off the strawberries and slice them into a bowl.
Preheat the oven to 180°c/Gas 4 and pop 12 paper baking cases in a muffin tin.
Add the jam.
Mix together the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt in a bowl.
Mash them with a potato masher. Whisk the cream in another bowl until it makes stiff peaks. Fold in the yoghurt. Stir the two mixtures together and put in the lolly moulds. Put them into the freezer and enjoy once they’re solid.
In another but larger bowl, mix together the bananas, egg, sugar and melted butter. Fold in the flour mixture and stir until smooth. Spoon the mixture evenly into the baking cases. Carefully put the muffins into the oven and bake for between 25 and 30 minutes. Allow to cool a little and then enjoy!

Kids Apple Pancakes Ingredients • 1 beaten egg • 2tsp baking powder • 100g plain flower • 3tbsp caster sugar • 25g butter • 150ml milk • 2 thinly sliced apples
Method Pop the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl. Make a dip in the middle with a spoon and pour in a bit of the milk and all of the egg. Mix it up to make a smooth paste.
Choccy Coconut Ball Ingredients for 5 servings • 250g digestive biscuits
Slowly add the rest of the milk and beat the mixture so that it makes a soft liquid (this is the batter).
• 45g desiccated (dried) coconut, plus a bit extra for rolling the balls in
Stir in 1 tablespoon of the caster sugar.
• 5 tablespoons cocoa powder
Heat a little bit of oil in a frying pan and put a large tablespoon of the batter into the hot pan. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes until it’s golden brown underneath and almost set on top. Then flip it over until the other side is cooked.
• 1 tin condensed milk (397g)
Keep the pancakes warm in some kitchen roll while you’re cooking the others.
Method Crush up the biscuits in a food bag (you can bash them with a rolling pin) and pop into a mixing bowl. Add the cocoa and coconut and stir together.
Then melt the butter into the pan and fry the apple slices until they’re nice and golden. Add the remaining sugar and stir until dissolved.
Pour in the condensed milk.
Put some of the apple slices inside two of the pancakes for a super sweet treat!
Keep making balls until all the mixture is gone then pop into the fridge for 30 minutes to set.
Scoop out a small handful of the mixture and roll into a ball then roll in the extra coconut.

Time to enjoy your
I
lawns
t’s summer and thankfully the weather this year has been good to us after a cold and wet spring, allowing us to enjoy our lawns. However, it is still important to maintain your grass and following a few simple procedures will keep your lawns in tip top condition. Local lawncare specialist GreenThumb has treatments to help. Keep Mowing... Cut the lawn weekly. Keep it at 2.5cm (1” approx) in length. It the temperatures are high or there is little rain adjust the length to 3.75cm (1.5” approx) as this provides important shade to the root zones helping the plants to retain moisture. Try to avoid always cutting in the same direction. This can lead to the grass lying flat and when teased up it will be much longer than it appears. Better to cut on a four week cycle. First week straight, second, at 90 degrees, third and fourth week diagonally. You will be amazed at the improvement in finished look. Ensure your mower blades are sharp as blunt blades will tear the grass as opposed to a clean cut. Torn leaves will make the grass appear to have brown tops and render the lawn unsightly. Continue to Feed and Weed... Maintain your fertilising cycle even if the lawn is dry. High quality fertilisers such as used by GreenThumb are carefully designed to have no scorch technology so can be applied and “watering in”, is not necessary. They will only start working as sufficient water is present. If rain is awaited then fertiliser applied these lawns will be at least three weeks later recovering than the ones that fertiliser was in place when it rained.
Weeds such as Trefoil and Self Heal are common at this time of year which need treating with the correct type of weed-killer to be effective. If necessary, Water... Hot temperatures and lack of rain put the lawn under stress which causes the lawn to go brown with slow growth. Water the lawn regularly. Each area needs at least a 30 minute soaking a couple of times a week. This is much better than a small amount each day as this causes the roots will be drawn to the surface seeking the moisture and the plants will die back more quickly. Following watering it is always wise to check the water has penetrated to the root zone. If this hasn’t occurred it is merely wasting water. To check, put a fork in the lawn move the handle to the ground which will reveal a sod to inspect. (Don’t remove it.) To replace, water well and firm down the raised sod. Little will be seen but any mark will swiftly disappear. Once soil has dried out it can develop “Dry Patch” a condition where soil literally repels water. If your lawn is struggling to recover after hours of rain contact GreenThumb who can supply a treatments that can remedy the condition Enjoy and relax... or Need Help? Time to enjoy your lawns. If in doubt, contact the professionals. GreenThumb (West Lancs) has been operating in this area for over 18 years and can draw on a wealth of local knowledge to offer advice and recommend lawn treatments using qualified staff, specially prepared additives and professional equipment. Niamh Ollerton visits Southport Electric Bikes
T
here are few things more leisurely than a bike ride; with the wind through your hair, scenic views and a companion or two by your side. However for some riders, long distances and an uphill slog may seem quite challenging, but it doesn’t need to be that way. And that’s where Southport Electric Bikes comes in.
My colleague Peter and I arrived at the quaint shop just off King’s Street in Southport and I was pleasantly surprised with the wide selection of bikes Glenn had available. Owner Glenn doesn’t mess about when it comes to electric bikes as he explained if the bikes don’t have a branded battery or two years’ guarantee then he won’t take them onboard. Basically, he’s looking at the product from a consumer’s perspective;
33 ensuring customers always purchase top quality electric bikes. The whole point of an electric bike is to allow riders of any age, ability and fitness to enjoy cycling even when the route isn’t as flat as a pancake. Glenn told me that over time, his fitness improved and he got stronger thanks to his electric bike. So there’s an added health benefit too. Firstly, we needed to pick two cycles to test, from the generous selection. Peter and I selected different bikes to cater to riders of different ages, and after Glenn had explained how the motor worked – pedaling automatically kicks the motor in, but once you use the brakes or stop pedaling the motor cuts out – we were off on our “ambitious” 35-mile route through West Lancashire. and picturesque as we cycled through the fields, and so there was minimal exertion needed on both our parts. That was until we got to the Saracens Head adjacent to the founding site of the Leeds-Liverpool canal. Glenn said I’d be fine with the motor on the lowest setting, but when it came to bridges over canals on our route, I was very happy to have the extra assistance when I kicked the setting up to maximum.
We were blessed with a beautiful, sunny day as we set off towards Southport promenade – making sure we were happy and comfortable with the bikes. And let me tell you, if you’re worried about getting around a roundabout on a bike, put your motor on a higher number and you’ll whizz around no problem. Peter and I cycled along the coastal route towards and through Birkdale village, where we admired the quaint shops and cafes, then made our way towards Halsall. This part of the route proved to be quite flat
From Halsall we made our way to Ormskirk, which included a very easy uphill ride, before making a pit stop in the market town. It was market day, so it was a little too hectic to ride our bikes, but pushing the bikes is not a difficult feat either; The bikes have a walk assist function so wheeling them along is really very easy & doesn’t require much effort at all. After leaving Ormskirk we coasted down the hill and on towards Burscough. You can’t help but feel like a carefree child when you soar downhill can you? As we were on the flat once more you’re able to do a little more cycling without fear of the electric assistance/battery running dry. Making our way

of the ride as we were completely surrounded by countryside.
towards Burscough Wharf we needed the electric assist up high again as we cycled over the canal bridge and made our way into the Wharf courtyard before continuing our adventure on the canal. I was amazed at how comfortable my bike was even on the canal towpath. It felt no different than a regular bike, but if you listened very carefully you can hear the low buzz of the motor kicking in when the path was quiet. With canal boats galore (including a barge café) as we cycled towards Burscough Farm for a spot of lunch, this was one of the most peaceful sections
Call today to book your
Our final part of the cycle took us towards Churchtown (where you could make a trip to the Botanical Gardens on a sunny day). Although the landscape was flat, this needed a little more pedaling on my part, boosting the electric assistance. That is, if like us, you need to put some pedal to the metal because you’re conscious of not exceeding your parking allowance in Southport car park. Peter and I thoroughly enjoyed our ride, and Peter also commented on how much electric bikes have improved in recent years in terms of build quality and battery range (mileage). And the good thing about electric bikes is they’re simple and easy to use. Glenn and the team at Southport Electric Bikes are not only on hand to cater to your needs when it comes to selecting a bike, but are there to ensure you have years of reliable and enjoyable use of it.

here are so many reasons for us to ensure we keep active. Whether it’s swimming, running, or cycling, there are lots of health benefits that come with exercising. But, mark Wednesday, August 15, on your calendar, because it’s time to get physical.
By Niamh Ollerton
to fit exercise into your daily routine because it’s also a form of transport. It burns calories, gets your heart pumping and works your legs and abs. It can also lift your mood, put a smile on your face and improve your general health and wellbeing. • Cycling is proven to raise your metabolic rate, which can help to keep weight off • Moderate pedal-pushing burns up to 500 calories per hour, which is more than walking or swimming • A 20-minute bike ride to work could use the same amount of calories as a cappuccino, a bar of chocolate or a 175ml glass of wine • Cycling can also save you money and helps the environment. Electric bikes also make cycling possible for a wider range of people. They make it possible for less fit people to bike commute long distances – and improve their fitness. Assistance only kicks in once you pedal, usually in proportion to how hard you pedal. Electric bike commuters can choose their level of assistance.
Every year since 2012, Cycle to Work Day has been the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event, and thousands of enthusiastic riders have hit the streets to celebrate everyday cycling. It’s a free event that everyone can join in. But why cycle? Cycling is one of the easiest ways
The low-impact exercise is easier on your joints than running or other high-impact activities, but it will still help you shift the pounds and get in shape. Riding for at least 150 minutes every week is the best way to build your cardiovascular fitness. You could do a couple of shorter rides during the week with a longer ride at the weekend for example.
36 And that’s where Cycling to Work Day comes in. The annual event further demonstrates the benefits of cycling to work, including: 1) You’ll sleep more deeply – An early morning ride might tire you out in the short term, but it’ll help you catch some quality shut-eye when you get back to your pillow. 2) Beat illness – Forget apples, cycling will keep the doctor at bay. “Moderate exercise makes immune cells more active, so they’re ready to fight off infection,” says Cath Collins, chief dietician at St George’s Hospital in London. 3) Live longer – King’s College London compared over 2,400 identical twins and found those who did the equivalent of just three 45-minute rides a week were nine years ‘biologically younger.’
4) Increase your brain power – Cycling helps build new brain cells in the hippocampus — the region responsible for memory, which deteriorates from the age of 30. How to get involved with Cycle to Work Day. All you need is a bike – new or old – and the desire to ride. You can go solo or be the change your workplace needs and organise an event for you and your colleagues. Whatever you do, however far your ride – have fun! If you don’t have a bike yet, there’s no need to worry. The scheme’s website offers exclusive deals with a big saving from www.cycletoworkday.org/ save-on-a-bike/ Pledges make prizes Every year, the Cycle to Work Day organisers track how many miles the Cycle to Work Day cyclists pledge to ride. And this year, 369,627 miles pledged so far, and counting…
Since the event began over 2 million miles have been ridden! All you need to do is contribute your saddle time for the 2018 event and pledge your miles. To make it worth your while, everyone who pledges has the chance to win some incredible prizes.
37 When you get on your bike on Wednesday, August 15, you could secure your place in the huge prize draw. To win, tell organisers how many miles you’re planning to ride and pedal like the wind. And as it’s Cycle to Work Day, who better to get involved than employers? Add the health and wellbeing event to you HR calendar and get employees in the saddle. Employees can give cycle commuting a go, with support and advice on the way, and you can discover how cycling is great for business. New Brighton by Gemma Sherlock
K
nowing the Wirral like the back of my hand, I jumped at the chance to do the latest Jack’s Tracks in this beautiful part of the north. With stunning sunsets and views of the striking Liverpool skyline across the River Mersey why wouldn’t you want to spend a hot summer’s day taking it all in? However I must shamefully admit that the 15-mile Wirral Coastal Walk is not something I have ever completed. But I and my colleague Niamh decided to have a fair go at it and managed a good six miles, give or take (it was a hot day). The scorching sun made the relative easy flat stroll somewhat arduous, making it imperative to carry those water bottles and top up that sunscreen.
We parked the car at the starting point at Seacombe Ferry Terminal - opposite the £10m space-themed attraction, Spaceport. The free parking here made the walk ahead less stressful. With our jackets tied firmly around our waists and our sunglasses poised for action we set off midmorning to begin the coastline walk and beat the sun before it entered its hottest time of the day. On paper the North Wirral section of the Circular Trail takes you from Seacombe Ferry Terminal to West Kirby, via the rejuvenated New Brighton Resort with its Floral Pavilion, Fort Perch Rock, Lighthouse, Marine Lake and new Retail Park. The route continues along the promenade to Wallasey Beach and into North Wirral Coastal Park.
43 The route then turns inland at The Gunsite, the location of World War II gun emplacements, to follow the Birket Cycle Route. Pedestrians can if they wish carry on along the embankment past Leasowe Common where in 1864 the oldest skeleton in Merseyside was found. We did a section of this from the terminal - once parked we headed towards the opening of the walk, to the left of the River Mersey ferry terminal. Then it’s a straight route along Egremount, Magazine and Tower Promenade, towards Tower Grounds and New Brighton. Don’t worry, it’s difficult to miss points of interest along the route – it’s straight, flat and easily accessible for both pedestrians and cyclists. The gorgeous views to the right of you are enough to fulfil your interest, and the colourful houses to the left change appearance as the cascade down the promenade.
Wallasey Town Hall greets you in its grand glory, a quarter of the way down the promenade. The hall was built to replace the old Town Hall and its foundation stone was laid into position by means of electricity, by King George V in 1914, while 9,000 school children sang in the choir. Its nickname ‘back-to-front’ town hall arose as it was built to face the river and has a fine flight of steps leading up from the promenade. Situated at the entrance are the memorial gardens, commemorating the 96 Liverpool FC fans who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster.
Walking past the hall you are then treated to Guinea Gap Baths, the oldest pool in the Wirral. Between 1908 and 1957 no fewer than 205 world and national swimming records were achieved here. Its name is derived from the days before the promenade was built where there was a break in the riverbank known to locals as Guinea Gap. This was a popular place for anyone wishing to go for a swim as it was free from dangerous currents that lurk in the river itself. Carrying past Guinea Gap Baths you shortly come to a black post sign, pointing to areas north, east, west and south – head for Vale Park and New Brighton. Before you come to the entrance of Vale Park along Magazine Promenade you will notice the war
44 memorial which sits proudly to your left. Once you come to the signs for Vale Park take a welcome break – the café in the park sells homemade ice cream and cakes – plenty of tempting treats.

The area surrounding the park was established in the 1750s when the Port of Liverpool set up the major gunpowder and weaponry storage magazines in the local sand dunes. Opened in 1889, Vale Park became a public park in 1899 and was one of the best small parks in the north. With its excellent acoustics and striking appearance the bandstand is the main feature of the park. Come back out from the park through its entrance and turn left, you will be back on the promenade heading for New Brighton.

Along the way you may notice a pirate ship on the beach – don’t worry this hasn’t washed up from afar rather it’s a piece of interactive artwork enjoyed by all age groups. The permanent tourist, known as The Black Pearl, was originally made by a local man using a single piece of driftwood which washed ashore. Carry on walking and you will find yourself in the Tower Grounds area, just before the hustle and bustle of the main area of New Brighton. The area is where the Tower Ballroom and New Brighton Tower itself used to be. The tower was completed in 1900, 10 years after Blackpool Tower and, at 567ft (173m), was 49ft (15m) taller. It was modelled on the Eiffel Tower, attracted more than 500,000 visitors a year in its heyday and featured one of the largest ballrooms in the world. Sadly, due to the First World War, the Tower became neglected and was finally dismantled in 1921. Now nearly halfway through the walk you will reach another tourist attraction in New Brighton, Fort Perch Rock. Located to your right on the beach, Fort Perch Rock

HAVE A GO! JOBS FOR AUGUST • Trim your hedges—midsummer new growth can make them look untidy now. • Cut back your strawberries if you don’t want the runners to create new plants. • Keep harvesting your vegetables. You can still sow oriental greens, spring onions, salad leaves and beetroot. • Collect seed from garden plants. • Keep your ponds topped up. • Feed your soil with green manure.
Collecting plant seeds ready for next season is a reasonably easy job if you know what you’re doing. Collect ripe seed on a dry day when you can see the seed heads have changed colour from green to brown, black or red. You need to collect them before they open and shed their contents. Lay them out to dry in a warm place such as a windowsill or greenhouse. Once dry, gently crush the pods and release the seeds. Store in paper packets or envelopes in an airtight container.
TOP TIP Most seed germinates best if sown as soon as it ripens, whereas seed harvested while immature will not germinate.
