Local Life

Changes Ahead The times, they are a changing here at Local Life HQ as we prepare for a forthcoming transformation of our West Lancashire magazine. For some time now, we have struggled with restrictions on the size of the magazine. Because the magazine is currently delivered via Royal Mail, we are restricted to a certain weight on the service we use and, as more and more advertisers come on board, the amount of editorial we can carry is almost shoe-horned in as a result. This isn’t good, no-one wants to spend time reading a publication that is overwhelmingly advertising. Our other magazines in Wigan, Chorley and St Helens aren’t restricted in this way, and as a result are much bigger in size and are able to carry more editorial content. At the same time, we are also increasing the size of the magazine from A5 to B5 and this will allow us to break free of those restrictions and produce the magazine that we want to produce; a stylish and informative publication that we hope you’ll want to read every month without fail. However, from the September issue, you’ll need to pick it up from Sainsburys, Morrisons, Tesco supermarkets, Warbreck Garden Centre and other outlets in the local area – or you can sign up to receive a link to the online magazine at www. locallife247.co.uk. Our exciting new look is still in the planning stage at the moment, and whilst it will retain existing favourites, I can tell you that it will be very different. We can’t wait to introduce you to the new look Local Life! Until then, have a great summer.

Belle of the Whether you’re planning a week in a luxury Caribbean villa or going camping in Cornwall, this little lot deserve a spot in your suitcase. I’m a big fan of dry shampoos, particularly for camping, festivals and lazy weekends. Philip Kingsley’s One More Day Dry Shampoo is a good choice. It absorbs excess sebum, boosts volume and helps to prevent an itchy, irritated scalp. It’s a spray rather than a powder, so won’t leave you looking like you’ve been dusted with talc (unlike some other dry shampoos). The travel-sized 50ml bottle is perfect for holidays, although the 200ml is a lot better value for money. It’s £9-£19.50, see www.philipkingsley.co.uk. I’m very tempted by the new Como Viaggio Travel Styling Kits by Alfa Italia. Each kit comprises a travel hairdryer, mini ceramic styling iron, two sectioning clips and a bag for just £44.95. Travel hair-styling products tend to be a bit ‘meh’ when it comes to power,

Beach

but this hairdryer is 1200w and the straighteners heat up to 190°C. Choose from dusky pink with a matching suede-effect case, or light blue or stone with a leatherlook case, see www.alfaitaliapro. com.

A facial oil can help to tackle dry patches, boost hydration and soften skin. Personally, I prefer a 100% natural oil like Gorgias London’s Age Renewal Facial Oil, which I’ve been using at nighttime for a few weeks now. It’s a 100% natural blend of seed and plant oils, including avocado, prickly pear, olive and argan. The blend is packed with nutrients, vitamins, fatty acids, omega 9 and antioxidants. My skin drinks it up and always feels softer and ‘happier’ the morning after using it. It costs £44.95 from www. gorgiaslondon.com. I know I’m not the only one of my friendship group who slathers on face cream but rarely uses body lotion. If you’re also guilty of neglecting 80% of your skin, AL!VE’s Hydrating Spray Lotion could be the answer. It takes seconds to spray on and absorbs

super-fast. It also feels lovely and cool, so is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. Best of all, you can pick it up for just £5 from Sainsbury’s. If, like me, your legs are less smooth alabaster and more pale mottled mess, fake tan can be your friend. Had a bad experience with bright orange streaks? Modern formulas are a huge improvement on their predecessors. Just exfoliate and moisturise well before you start. Bondi Sands’ Protect & Tan is a great introduction to self-tanning. As the name implies, it helps to protect your skin from the sun and builds a gradual, natural-looking tan over a few days of use. It’s SPF 15 so not strong enough for sunbathing but perfect if you’re popping to the shops. It’s an oil, but not greasy, and it leaves skin feeling softer for hours afterwards. It’s £12.99 at www. boots.com.

Party in the

Southport Flower Show celebrates its 90th anniversary this year – The largest independent flower show in the country has been a staple of North West heritage since 1929, featuring the best and brightest in bloom with its Amateur Growers’ Competition, expert gardening tips and stunning show gardens. The Grand Floral Marquee is home to a treasure trove of bonsai, cacti, vegetables, trees and much more, while the Garden Theatre invites celebrity guests to give talks or entertain the crowds. Don’t miss your chance to see a live demonstration from beekeepers, who will show you the enchanting Waggle Dance from their 6-legged friends. Whether you’re looking to see floral art demos, witness dog displays or just bop to some live music, Southport Flower Show really does have it all. Running from August 15th-18th, this year’s theme is the suitably summery Garden Party, during which Victoria Park will be transformed into a huge party spread. This year, expect to enjoy cookery demonstrations from Hairy Biker Dave Myers, plus more from the

award-winning TV chef Ellis Barrie. Opening the show is Strictly Come Dancing’s Bruno Tonioli; there’ll also be special guest appearances from Gardeners’ World presenter Adam Frost, This Morning’s Michael Perry and children’s entertainer and Cbeebies star Justin Fletcher. Gardener’s Question Time star Christine Walkden will also be on hand to share her advice with visitors. That’s not all. Don’t worry about the kids being bored while you get the latest gardening tips: there’s a dedicated MineVention Marquee for them to get involved in Minecraft-themed competitions throughout. Live entertainment will take place in the show’s arena – from an eagle and vulture experience to acrobatic displays, you’ll have trouble closing your jaw afterwards! Don’t miss the 350 trade exhibitors in this year’s Shopping Village to stock up on gardening musthaves, flowers, planters and much more. A 4-day pass for this year’s show costs £60, with early bird day tickets available for £20 until

CRĂˆME CARAMELS

Just a few cheap ingredients are needed to make this classic French dessert. Served with fresh fruit it’s an impressive finale to a special meal. Makes 6. Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes, plus overnight chilling

Ingredients

Method

150g granulated sugar

1 To make the caramel, place the granulated sugar in a medium heavy-based pan with 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved in the water to form a clear syrup. Increase the heat and bring the syrup to the boil, without stirring, until it turns a deep golden caramel colour. Swirl the pan occasionally to prevent hotspots forming and the caramel burning.

4 medium eggs, plus 2 medium egg yolks 100g caster sugar 600ml whole milk 1 tsp vanilla extract Orange slices, grapes and raspberries, to serve

2 Remove the pan from the heat and carefully pour the hot caramel into six individual ovenproof dishes (see TIP). Place the dishes in a roasting tin. Preheat the oven to 140C/fan 170C/gas mark 3. 3 Whisk the eggs, yolks and caster sugar together in a large heatproof bowl. Pour the milk into a clean pan and bring to simmering point, then whisk the hot milk into the egg mixture. Stir in the vanilla extract then strain the mixture into a large jug and divide between the dishes. 4 Pour enough boiling water into the roasting tin to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Bake for 18-22 minutes until just set. Remove from the oven and leave to cool, then remove from the tin, cover and chill for 4 hours or overnight. 5 To serve, run the tip of a knife round the edge of the set custard. Invert each one on to a small plate. Serve decorated with orange slices, grapes and raspberries.

TIP: Use small metal pudding basins or ceramic ramekin dishes each with 150ml capacity.

Stuff For a Rainy

Day

We’re all well aware that summer in Britain is no guarantee of sunshine. If the weather’s preventing you from getting out to the park or the beach, why not wait for the clouds to break in one of the North West’s many museums?

Harris Museum

World Museum Liverpool

Housing a vast array of historical artefacts, The Harris invites you to learn more about Preston’s history or view stunning artwork from its industrial background. Heading to The Harris in September is a multimedia exhibition about the internationally recognised Preston Bus Station, which combines photography, sculpture and film to capture the building’s colourful heritage.

From live bugs and tropical fish to a natural history centre where you can touch a hippopotamus skull, the World Museum is not to be missed. Wind through the dinosaur gallery and Ancient Egypt exhibit to find out more about the history of our planet.

Highlights: Catch one of the many planetarium shows to hunt for aliens, join the race to the moon and experience the birth of the sun. Tickets cost £3 per adult or £2 per child. Free entry www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/wml/

Highlights: Visit the museum during the summer holidays for its Fearsome Craftsmen event: this touring exhibition comes from the York-based JORVIK Group, and includes plenty of hands-on crafts. Free entry www.harrismuseum.org.uk/

Jodrell Bank

Spaceport & U-Boat

This Macclesfield-based observatory is the perfect place to take any space enthusiasts. Home to the Lovell Telescope, which has been probing the depths of the universe since 1957, it’s well worth the slightly longer journey to immerse yourself in the science of space next to the huge piece of infrastructure. Why Doctors are Prescribing

Mindfulness

Mindfulness has gone from buzzword to a therapy increasingly prescribed by doctors. So what’s it all about? Mindfulness is… • Increasing your awareness of what’s going on inside and outside yourself in a particular moment—both physical sensations and emotions. • Stopping to really notice what you’re thinking and feeling and what sparked these thoughts and emotions. How it can help Today, many of us rush through our days, reacting ‘off the cuff’ and missing opportunities to take a breath and appreciate what’s around us. Mindfulness means taking a step back to examine what’s going on rather than just reacting.

“It’s about allowing ourselves to see the present moment clearly. When we do that, it can positively change the way we see ourselves and our lives,” says Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, By becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can recognise signs of stress and anxiety earlier and begin to see patterns, recognising those that aren’t helpful. This can make it easier to prevent them overwhelming you or leading you into a spiral of negative emotions or actions that make the situation worse. We can all benefit from mindfulness, but it’s now officially recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to prevent depression in people who’ve had three or more bouts, and is

35 increasingly recommended by doctors for helping with chronic conditions or pain, as well as stress, anxiety or depression. There’s emerging evidence that it can ease insomnia, too. Practising Mindfulness The NHS recommends: Noticing the everyday and trying something new: notice the details of what’s going on around you and try a different seat or going somewhere new for lunch to see things in a new way. Watching and naming your thoughts and feelings: “Mindfulness isn’t about making these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events,” says Dr Williams. “Imagine standing at a bus station and seeing ‘thought buses’ coming and going without having to get on them and be taken away. This can be very hard at first, but with gentle persistence it is possible.” Identify them. “That’s my worry about my Dad’s health.” “I’m stressed because I’ve got a really busy week.” By being aware of your fears and concerns,

you’re more likely to recognise when you’re letting them grow disproportionately to the thing they’re about. Freeing yourself from the past and future: realising that worries about the past or future can dominate, stopping you from enjoying the now. If you realise you’ve been reliving or pre-living negative experiences for several minutes, take a moment to focus yourself in the present, appreciating the day and the moment you’re living now. Taking time out: ideally having more formal, longer mindfulness sessions, focusing on your breathing and your body and bringing your attention back whenever your mind wanders. This could be at home or while travelling. Find the time and place most convenient and helpful for you. The NHS recommends the Mental Health Foundation’s online mindfulness course which can be found at www.bemindfulonline.com, or you can find a local teacher: bemindful.co.uk/learnmindfulness.

My partner’s lost in

the past

Do you listen to Spotify while your partner still enjoys scratchy cassette recordings? Do you bristle each time he or she switches on the Yesterday channel, or counts out loose change instead of using a contactless card? Age affects people in different ways and if you’re a forward-looking person who is willing to embrace change, it can be frustrating when your partner seems happier living in the past. If you can both laugh off your differences and set them aside, there’s no problem, but if your partner’s behaviour starts to affect your lifestyle as a couple, it could be a red flag for your relationship. At 56, Stephen Adebusi-Jones is two years younger than his wife Mary, but she feels his attitude to life is typical of someone much older. “Steve always wanted to hear the latest band, experiment with different foods and travel to new places,” says Mary. ”But all that stopped after he turned forty five. These days he prefers to stay in, listening to the same music he played when he was young. He even moans when I suggest something different, like trying out a new recipe.” That’s a familiar story for Jamie Barber, who has lived with his partner Mimi for the past twenty-five years. “Mimi’s interest in Sixties nostalgia began when

she started buying and selling vintage clothes and jewellery online,” Stephen explains. “She used to enjoy trawling charity shops and online auction sites for vintage buys, but now she just watches reruns of 1960s films and TV shows on YouTube.” It can be hard to understand how a partner who was once positive, optimistic and adventurous could lose those qualities as they age. While it’s easy to accuse them of being ‘stuck in a rut’, a psychiatrist may take a different view. If your partner is displaying symptoms such as low energy and general loss of pleasure in everyday life, it’s possible they are suffering from a condition called dysthymia. Also known as ‘Persistent Depressive Disorder’ and closely related to depression, this condition can last for years and, thanks to its undramatic symptoms, often goes undiagnosed.

37 A person with dysthymia might suffer from low self-esteem, show little interest in daily activities and seem irritable and ‘down’ much of the time. Avoiding social activities, not getting minor tasks done and losing concentration are also signs of this condition. The good news is that it can be relieved by a combination of talking therapy and medication. If you believe that your partner’s mental health is at risk, you should encourage them to contact a GP. Alternatively you could find help from Age UK, which runs a free counselling service throughout the UK. Call Age UK’s helpline on 0800 678 1602 to locate a counsellor near you, or visit their website at ageuk.org.uk. Whoever came up with the wise old adage “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift; that’s why they call it the present!” seems to have understood the importance of looking forward, rather than living in the past. If you can communicate that message to your partner, there’s a chance it could transform both your lives for the better.

Summer

reads

Pull up your sun lounger, pour yourself an ice-cold drink and lose yourself in a good book. Little Darlings – Melanie Golding: Lauren is convinced someone is planning to abduct her newborn twins, so when they go missing it seems her fears were justified. But when the twins are found, Lauren is convinced they’re not hers. Have they been swapped for changelings like she believes, or is Lauren suffering from post-partum psychosis? Is she the only one who can save the babies, or is she the one who’s putting them in danger? A chilling pageturner that keeps you guessing. Vegan One Pound Meals – Miguel Barclay: This book proves that vegan food can be as delicious, easy and inexpensive as it is healthy. There are twists on classic dishes, such as ‘artichoke paella’, ‘cashew pesto pasta’ and ‘tomato tarte tatin’, along with plenty of original dishes, such as ‘kimchi tacos’ and ‘sticky aubergine bao’. Most only use a handful of ingredients and all work out at around £1 per portion. Recipes are easy to follow and each is accompanied by a mouthwatering image. The Tattooist of Auschwitz – Heather Morris: If you haven’t yet read the biography of Lale Sokolov, summer could be the perfect time as you’ll want the time to digest this book in peace. Lale was imprisoned in Auschwitz from 1942 and put to work tattooing the other prisoners. During his time at Auschwitz, Lale witnessed both the brutality of the human race, and its appetite for kindness, self-sacrifice and hope. While The Tattooist of Auschwitz is at times harrowing, it is also a love story. A must-read.

The Perfect Wife – JP Delaney: Abbie wakes in a hospital bed to discover everything she thinks she knows to be true is wrong. She’s an AI who’s been created by her tech genius husband using memories of the real Abbie, who died five years before. As she struggles to come to terms with her life, Abbie starts to question everything she’s been told. But when she has no rights, who can she trust? Suspense, twists and moral quandaries abound in this skilful thriller. Cleaning the Gold – Karin Slaughter and Lee Child: Looking for a quick read? This collaboration between bestselling writers Karin Slaughter and Lee Child is just 80 pages long. It brings together two of their best-known characters – Jack Reacher and Will Trent. Will is undercover investigating Jack when they realise there are bigger fish to fry. A perfect slice of fast-paced action to enjoy while you’re waiting for your flight. The Farm – Joanne Ramos: Golden Oaks farm doesn’t grow tomatoes, wheat or potatoes. It grows babies. The surrogate mothers (Hosts) are paid to incubate their rich clients’ embryos. While at Golden Oaks, they have to adhere to strict rules, from giving up their phones to following a diet. The Farm is told from the viewpoint of four women: Jane and Reagan are two of the hosts, while Mae is the brains behind the lucrative business. Ate is Jane’s cousin. The Farm is thought-provoking and topical, but above all it’s a fantastic page-tuner of a story.

Nicky Nook

by Chris Pearce

For this month’s Jack’s Tracks we visit Scorton, near Garstang, the gateway to the Bowland Fells, for an excellent and varied six mile walk with great views. The walk takes you gently downwards through the scenic Grizedale Valley and some rather pretty hamlets, before you’re then faced with the sharp shock of climbing Nicky Nook. It’s only when you reach the peak that you realise it’s a mere foothill amongst the other fells to the east, but nevertheless, the views over the Lancashire coastline were still pretty impressive. The starting point of Grizedale Bridge is a bit remote, but the GPS Waypoint is SD 535 490. If that doesn’t mean anything to you then take the road to Lancaster going out of Oakenclough. You go over

the first cattle grid and, shortly afterwards, a small bridge, then park up in a small carpark-cum-layby on the left. Take the slate path leading away from the car park towards the woods. Once you have gone through two wooden gates in succession, take the path on the left and cross the wooden footbridge over the stream and go into Holme Wood. I’ve never been a big fan walking through woods; it’s often boggy, the poor lighting limits photo opportunities, and accurate mapping can be difficult. However, there are exceptions and Holme Wood, up near Scorton in Lancaster is certainly one. The well-defined path follows the stream all

45 the way through the woods with creative studded boardwalks over the boggy parts, and you’ll soon arrive at Grizedale Dock reservoir. The path bends to the right shortly afterwards, following the direction of an inlet and you come to a fingerpost by a gate. You need to take a left here towards Nicky Nook/Scorton and follow the inlet back in the direction of the reservoir. Ignore the uphill path on the right shortly afterwards (signposted Nicky Nook/Scorton) and carry on in the same direction – you’re going towards Higher Lane on a bridleway. The path continues on a meandering downward trend parallel to the stream for another ¾ mile until you reach a steel bar gate and fingerpost just before a wooden footbridge. Take a 90 degree right turn and follow the footpath (not the bridleway) to Higher Lane. Once you’ve crossed a short piece of open farmland, you’ll enter Peddars Wood and walk uphill until you reach a gate and a single track road. Turn right up the road for around 250 yards and take the footpath on the left after the farm. Walk on the left hand perimeter of the field for 75 yards or so,

and then cut across the field diagonally on the welldefined path. Go through a gate and head across the second field towards the steel circular gate in the distance. Once you’re through, turn left and

47 walk through this pretty hamlet. Approximately 200 yards before you’re due to go under the M6, there’s a footpath on the right. Take the footpath, then go through another stile and plunge into Ghyll Wood. You’ll cross a wooden footbridge and then clamber up the bank on the other side, walking along the top of the bank until you come to a gate. Take the path through the field and you’ll eventually come out on Snowshill Lane. Turn right and follow this road until you reach the entrance to Wrysdale Park. If you fancy a detour at the first-rate Applestore Café (open 9-4pm Weds-Sun) or a look at Wrysdale Lake then carry straight on. Otherwise, follow the road round to the right, across the bridge and uphill to Higher Lane. Turn left and then immediate right for the uphill trek up Nicky Nook. After a steep initial climb, the path will level off somewhat. After you pass the reservoir on the left, there is an option to fork off and follow the path to the cairn, but for the purposes of the walk we’re following the path right up to the white trig pillar at the peak After a breather, follow the path in the same direction down the hill. As the path bends downwards to the right, you’ll see a gate set in a dry stone wall straight ahead. Go through the gate and head for the brick structure directly ahead, and when you’ve arrived here, head downhill towards the green box at the bottom of the hill. Follow the path round the green box and once you get to the track turn right and head into the woods once again. After a couple of gates, you’ll arrive at the fingerpost sign by a gate you encountered

earlier on in the walk. Turn left here towards Grizedale Bridge and follow the pathway back through Holme Wood until you reach your starting point.

Gardening

Add Some

Vertical Interest Whatever the size or shape of your garden, it will benefit from having some height added to it – and what better way to do this than with an arch or arbour? And, of course, any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity too… Position an arbour to overlook a good view or attractive part of the garden and you instantly create a fabulous place to sit and relax. An arch or an arbour can divide your garden into one or more rooms, a trick that makes your garden seem larger and more interesting. Chosen carefully, arches and arbours are good looking and a feature in their own right, and if you clothe them with climbers you are adding to their appeal. Plus, those climbers with the added ingredient of scent, like some of the rambling or climbing roses, or honeysuckle or jasmine, can totally transform the whole garden with their wafting perfume. The area around an arbour in a sunny spot with fairly free-draining soil can be planted with lavenders, so you can enjoy both the way it looks and the perfume and

red cedar or a hardwood such as oak would be my preference, followed by Douglas fir or larch. Alternatively you can choose a softwood which has been tanalised or pressure-treated with a wood preservative, which will usually be somewhat cheaper. aromatic leaves after a stressful day. In sunny positions, plant thymes or camomile as a lawn on the approach to your archway or arbour; a fantastic aroma will be released when your feet gently crush the plants. Arches and arbours are available in a range of materials, with wood and metal being the most popular, both of which I find fit in with my gardening style. In these materials you can transform them with wood stains or paints to a bright blue, rich red or any colour you fancy! An arch or an arbour can be constructed from scratch, but there is a wide range of readymade arbours and kits for both arches and arbours available. If you choose wood, do ensure that it is a wood which is either naturally going to resist decay – western

By choosing a wooden arch, perhaps with a rounded top and trellis up the sides, you ensure a really good planting space, and this more rustic look fits well in an informal garden. Many wooden arches are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. To find out what’s available, visit several local garden centres or take a look at mail-order products from the numerous arch and arbour websites, which make window shopping even easier! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, ladybirds and other great natural pest controls, stylish cloches, practical and pretty plant supports, the fantastic SpeedHoe, gardening tools, planters, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Or why not book Pippa for a gardening talk at your gardening club?
